Chapter 16 – Play Chess

Zhao Langming was completely bewildered by Lu Xingyan’s sudden outburst. He Siyue and Shen Xingruo also looked at Lu Xingyan in confusion, not understanding why this young master suddenly lost his temper.

Whether Lu Xingyan felt he was in the wrong or wanted to show his magnanimous side, after a quiet three seconds, he suddenly calmed down and said to Zhao Langming, “This is the last time.”

Zhao Langming was inexplicably scolded and took a while to come to his senses. He stood there, waiting anxiously for Lu Xingyan to search through his backpack. As time passed, and his legs started to numb from waiting, he mustered up the courage to ask, “Brother Yan, you didn’t bring it either?”

The air fell into silence.

—Key your mom! Can’t you bring it yourself? Even a pig knows to go back to its pen. What are you, a goldfish brain?

These cutting words lingered in Zhao Langming’s mind. Unable to hold back, he burst into laughter.

Lu Xingyan glanced at him.

That look was colder than the Antarctic ice that never melts.

“…Hahaha…”

Zhao Langming shut up.

Fortunately, the bell for class rang in time, saving him. He returned to his seat with a flushed face, feeling embarrassed.

Lu Xingyan had a sour expression on his face as if someone owed him a million or two.

When his gaze swept past Shen Xingruo, they locked eyes for a second.

From Shen Xingruo’s seemingly emotionless face, he somehow sensed a hint of indescribable emotion.

This class was Wang Youfu’s politics class, and everyone had prepared their politics exam papers conscientiously.

After Wang Youfu called for attention and analyzed the political scores, he proceeded to analyze scores in other subjects and the overall class performance.

“…This exam, overall, was a bit challenging. Our class’s average score is 538.6, ranking second in the grade. Originally, we were third, trailing behind the experimental class. But thanks to Shen Xingruo, as soon as her score was corrected, our class’s average score increased by almost 3 points, surpassing Class 3.”

“Take a look at the average scores and evaluate yourselves. I won’t say more about the extra points…”

“Oh, and regarding filling out the answer sheets, everyone needs to be careful. Shen Xingruo had a problem with her 2B pencil this time, and the teacher of Class 2 didn’t agree to manually grade her paper. If her score changed to first in the grade, it wouldn’t be fair to their class. Of course, she didn’t agree to it! In our school, we’re mainly focused on ourselves, and not so strict. The head of the grade eventually nodded in agreement.”

“But if it’s a major exam, like the city-wide joint exam or something, they definitely won’t find your paper and change it.”

“As for the college entrance exam, everyone doesn’t need to worry. They will distribute the exam materials uniformly. Just be careful not to fill in the wrong student ID and not to mistake the A and B test papers.”

Wang Youfu was indeed a political teacher; his ability to nag surpassed that of the math teacher, Liang Dong, by at least eighteen levels. After praising everyone for their progress this time, he singled out Shen Xingruo as a model student, praising her extensively. Then, he dissed the head teacher of the neighboring Class 2 once again, followed by a recount of his achievements and contributions as a class teacher over the years.

Liang Dong finished explaining all the exam papers in one class, and it wasn’t until five minutes before the end of the class that Wang Youfu finally returned to the main topic. “Alright, let’s take a look at the first multiple-choice question…”

Lu Xingyan slept through most of the class, but he finally woke up at this point. He yawned lazily, casually flipping through the exam paper, his arm resting on the back of the chair. “Where are we? Is the class over?”

Shen Xingruo was also feeling a bit tired. She propped her eyelids open and glanced at him, saying, “The first question.”

This week’s slow-paced exam analysis with Wang Youfu felt particularly lengthy. Shen Xingruo had reached a point of exhaustion where she was fed up with both politics and exam papers.

She couldn’t understand how Wang Youfu managed to cover all the new political lessons in the first semester of the sophomore year with his teaching speed. But when he took up a PE class and a music class to teach the political exam papers, she almost understood.

Even the last class meeting on Friday was occupied by Wang Youfu.

After enduring forty-five minutes, when the bell rang for the end of class, the students who wanted to go home immediately snapped out of their drowsiness and began packing up their bags eagerly.

Seeing this, Wang Youfu tapped the podium. “Did I say it’s time to dismiss? You all look like wilted vegetables in class, but as soon as the bell rings, you’re as lively as if you’ve been sprayed with pesticide!”

The students below stopped their movements unconsciously.

Seeing that they were obedient, Wang Youfu wasn’t angry. “Alright, we’ll stop here for the exam papers. If you have any questions, come and find me after class.”

Rest assured, no one would want to look at another political exam paper again.

The students below were silently complaining, and they couldn’t contain their fidgeting while packing their bags.

Wang Youfu leisurely took a sip of tea and continued, “Here we go again. Am I preventing you from going home for dinner or something? Don’t be so restless! Give me another two minutes to talk about next week’s schedule.”

From the moment Wang Youfu uttered the words “two minutes,” Shen Xingruo had a vague sense of foreboding.

Sure enough, Wang Youfu was an outstanding class teacher who spoke in a clear and organized manner but never kept his word. He went on to discuss three main points, each subdivided into three smaller points, some of which were further divided into two aspects.

These two minutes were forcibly expanded into half an hour in the end.

From the moment Wang Youfu said two minutes, Lu Xingyan started yawning and slouched in his seat for a few seconds. Then, he dragged out his sketchbook and started drawing grids.

Shen Xingruo’s head was throbbing. Seeing Lu Xingyan drawing on his notebook, she asked, “What are you drawing?”

Lu Xingyan simply pushed the notebook over to her. “Wanna play?”

Shen Xingruo: “…”

It was Connect Five.

He had gotten so bored that he was playing Connect Five against himself.

She thought he had some hidden talent for drawing.

“I won.”

“I won.”

“You lost.”

“And you lost again.”

Five minutes later, Shen Xingruo, lacking enthusiasm, put down her pencil.

She had won four games in five minutes, and she couldn’t help but wonder what kind of goldfish brain could lose a game at an average rate of one point fifteen seconds per move, with twenty-five seconds of it spent drawing grids.

Lu Xingyan seemed to be deeply embarrassed. He stared at the sketchbook for a long while, then pressured Shen Xingruo to continue playing.

Ignoring him, Shen Xingruo gave him a light kick.

“You…”

“Lu Xingyan, why are you tapping Shen Xingruo’s head?!” Suddenly, Wang Youfu’s voice came from the front of the class. “I’ve been watching you for a while. As a big boy, don’t bully your female classmates!”

Shen Xingruo reacted quickly. She sat up straight, staring ahead calmly, and casually touched her head without changing her expression.
