“So, this book signing event is quite large, with influential organizers and hefty cancellation fees. If possible, I hope you can attend,” Chen Feng explained methodically. “Besides, your doctor mentioned that engaging in familiar activities could help recover your memories.”
As he spoke, Yin Feng lay on the sofa, blowing bubbles with his gum that popped with small “pops.” His bare feet rested against You Mingxu’s waist at the other end.
You Mingxu kept her eyes on her phone, ignoring him.
Chen Feng smiled at their interaction. Recently, Teacher Yin seemed closer to his precious Miss Yu.
Though the old Yin Feng probably wouldn’t have given You Mingxu a second glance, Chen Feng hoped this version would get what he wanted—the woman he desired.
Clearing his throat, Chen Feng interrupted Yin Feng’s playfulness. “I hope you’ll attend the signing the day after tomorrow. Many of your supportive readers have been waiting a long time.”
Yin Feng chewed his gum thoughtfully. “But I don’t know what to do.”
“I’ll arrange everything. You just need to show up and follow instructions. Miss Yu, would you like to attend Teacher Yin’s signing? I can reserve front-row seats for you.”
Yin Feng immediately looked at You Mingxu. She’d never been to such an event and felt curious. Seeing Yin Feng’s puppy-dog gaze and thinking it might help his recovery, she smiled and nodded. “Sure.”
Chen Feng smiled with satisfaction—this was settled. As expected, Yin Feng immediately moved closer to You Mingxu, his face nearly touching hers. Sharp-eyed Chen Feng noticed You Mingxu subtly lean away while Yin Feng, oblivious, kept hovering close. Chen Feng sighed inwardly.
Yin Feng asked, “A-Xu, can you stay by my side throughout the signing?”
“No.”
“That wouldn’t be appropriate.”
Faced with both rejections, Yin Feng huffed, deflated. His hand slowly reached behind You Mingxu, pinching her waist to console himself. She didn’t even raise an eyebrow, as if merely brushed by an insect.
Chen Feng pretended not to notice. “By the way, there’s always a talent show segment for fans. Though you’ve lost your memories, the skills should remain. Would you prefer to play piano or saxophone?”
This caught You Mingxu’s attention. He knew so many things. Truly a renaissance man.
But Yin Feng’s eyes showed only confusion. He frowned, thinking, then said, “I’m not interested in those anymore. Could I perform something else?”
Chen Feng: “Such as?”
Yin Feng’s brow smoothed. “I could imitate animals.” He turned to You Mingxu with a sweet smile: “Woof! Woof woof—”
You Mingxu and Chen Feng froze for several seconds.
You Mingxu: “Piano!”
Chen Feng: “Understood!”
—
Early the next morning, before dawn and before Yin Feng was up, You Mingxu left.
Passing his door, she glanced up. Sure enough, he lay spread-eagled like a frog, half his blanket on the floor, his handsome face mashed against the pillow, sleeping sweetly.
Their two passionate kisses flashed through You Mingxu’s mind. Along with his recent sneaky attempts to steal touches.
Before she realized it, her lips had curved into a smile.
Then she froze, the smile vanishing as she silently left.
She took a taxi straight to her destination. The alley was still dark when she arrived. Xu Mengshan waited there with two colleagues.
You Mingxu nodded. “I owe you one for this.”
Xu Mengshan smiled while the others quickly said, “Don’t mention it, Sister Yu always looks out for us.”
You Mingxu smiled slightly, asking Xu Mengshan, “Has he come out?”
Xu Mengshan answered, “Should be soon.” He glanced at the alley’s surveillance camera, You Mingxu following his gaze.
At the other end of the surveillance feed, Fan Jia sat before a computer screen hugging a pillow, sending a voice message: “Don’t worry, I’ll shut it off in a few minutes.”
As dawn broke, three people emerged from a building in the alley. You Mingxu stood cross-armed, leaning against the wall, watching them approach.
Luo Yu had spent all night at a client’s home preparing for a case. Exhausted, he looked up and stared at the figure before him.
Then he smiled lazily. “What brings you to see me?”
You Mingxu walked straight toward him as two people emerged behind her, showing badges to Luo Yu’s men: “We’re conducting an operation nearby. Come assist us.”
His men protested: “What’s this? Police can’t just arrest people randomly!”
“We’re not arresting you, we’re after thieves. Just need to ask some questions. What, not cooperating?”
Luo Yu said, “It’s fine. Go with them, and cooperate fully with the officers. I need a private word with my wife.”
You Mingxu remained expressionless.
Once everyone left, Luo Yu stared at her. He’d been busy lately and hadn’t checked on her for days. All the news was bad. She’d solved another case, marching further down the path of justice. She and that fool were always together, growing close…
Luo Yu knew well how this seemingly cold woman behaved with men. Her black hair would fall carelessly, she’d tease with half-smiles that made your heart itch, seeing through all pretenses. Yet her heart was gentle—otherwise, she wouldn’t have let him slowly approach after his relentless pursuit. She’d even kiss your forehead with those rouge lips, her delicate fingers carrying a hint of cigarettes and feminine charm that could daze your mind.
If she’d discovered his true nature later, after truly giving him everything, falling into his web of romance, would things be different? Even if she refused to stay with him afterward, wouldn’t she still love him? Then couldn’t he have controlled this woman? Kept this proud eagle flying only within his grasp.
Though Luo Yu’s heart churned with regret, his face revealed nothing, his voice low: “What did you want to discuss? How’s that fool? Heard he cried when scared? My men don’t know their strength. But next time I see him by your side, it won’t be just playing in water.”
You Mingxu looked up, her gaze deep and steady: “Oh? So you know I’m here for him.”
Luo Yu laughed wildly as if she’d told an enormous joke. When he finished laughing, her expression remained neutral. Luo Yu said, “What, you’re here to avenge him? You’re just a small-time cop, I’m a famous lawyer. What can you do to me? Hahaha…”
You Mingxu smiled slightly: “Beat you up.”
Luo Yu’s eyes held laughter as he froze.
Ten minutes later.
You Mingxu tied her loose hair back into a ponytail with a rubber band, rubbed her reddened knuckles, glanced back at the man lying on the ground, chuckled, and signaled to Xu Mengshan’s group at the alley entrance. They immediately released the two men they’d been “questioning,” and everyone left by car.
Luo Yu struggled tremendously to stagger to his feet. His men saw and rushed over to help, shocked. He shoved them away with a livid face, then quickly grabbed his bleeding nose. His men were struck speechless by his bruised and swollen face.
Though his whole body felt like it would split apart from pain, Luo Yu stumbled a few steps and laughed “Hehe.”
Just then, a video call came in. Luo Yu glanced at it and hung up. The caller persisted, so he answered.
The person on screen studied Luo Yu’s face and smiled: “How rare—who managed to beat you up?”
Luo Yu: “Spit it out if you’ve got something to say.”
The person leaned closer to the screen: “Heard you still can’t catch You Mingxu, can’t complete your mission. Why not let me take over, and get it done sooner?”
Luo Yu said darkly: “I’ll say this once: don’t touch her.”
