Dai Wo You Zui Shi – Chapter 191

The elevator arrived.

It was easy to identify which rooms the six criminals had occupied. The apartment was rented, and more specific details still needed to be investigated.

An officer pried open the door, with several armed police rushing in behind him. They quickly confirmed that no one was inside and found no dangerous items.

Everyone lowered their weapons and began examining the apartment.

At first glance, you’d never imagine this was where a group of psychopathic killers lived.

The living room was spacious and elegantly comfortable. Yes, that was exactly the feeling – elegant and comfortable. Soft warm colors, fabric sofas, a tea station with tea sets, and cups with water still slightly warm. There was a TV, and bookshelves stocked with various texts including miscellaneous writings and psychology books.

You Mingxu even spotted a row of Yin Feng’s books, slightly worn. She took one down and flipped through it. Yin Feng walked to her side and took it from her to look. You Mingxu asked, “Were they studying you?”

Yin Feng tossed the book back on the table, saying, “Who knows? Maybe they just enjoyed reading. After all, my books are quite good.”

You Mingxu rolled her eyes at him.

A calligraphy piece hung on the wall, reading: “All good is dead, all evil prevails.”

The brushwork was forceful, proper, and magnificent. There was no signature.

You Mingxu and Yin Feng both studied the calligraphy for a moment, and exchanged glances, but said nothing.

This was probably the largest unit in the complex, easily over 200 square meters. On one side of the living room were the kitchen, shared bathroom, and a gym. You Mingxu entered the kitchen first, surprised to find a pot of soup still simmering on the stove. Some vegetables had been washed in the sink. Opening the refrigerator revealed food, fruits, and vegetables.

On the wall beside the refrigerator was a chart labeled “Duty Roster.”

Below were names or nicknames for each day of the week.

Old Gu, Cao Head, Big Mouth, Brother Wen…

The handwriting was somewhat ugly, but you could tell the writer had tried to make it neat.

You Mingxu stood stunned, looking at everything in the kitchen.

Yin Feng had appeared beside her again.

You Mingxu said, “They were living a life here?” Who could have imagined finding such clean, even cozy domestic details in a group of killers’ “home.”

Yin Feng replied, “I didn’t expect them to have a life either.”

His words carried a deeper meaning. You Mingxu glanced at him, noting his expression seemed even more detached than usual.

The gym contained a treadmill, several strength training machines, and a hanging punching bag. This matched You Mingxu’s expectations – violent criminals never neglected physical training. How could police officers not push themselves to the limit? If you slacked off while criminals trained harder, they’d easily overwhelm you.

The first bedroom had a cool, simple color scheme with a bed, wardrobe, and desk. The bed was neatly made, and the wardrobe held several men’s garments and a pair of leather shoes. Nothing remarkable.

The desk had a glass top, under which were photographs.

They were all of the same woman and a little girl. The woman appeared to be in her thirties, the girl around seven or eight. They looked like mother and daughter, smiling happily in several photos. Some pictures were cut from larger group photos, with uneven edges showing a black clothing corner of another person.

There was a small space under the glass, with a faint outline showing where a photo had been removed. The glass was slightly askew – whoever took the photo had done so in a hurry.

You Mingxu immediately understood that when they left in a hurry, whoever lived in this room – whichever one of them it was – only had time to grab one photo.

In one corner of the desk sat a small, well-worn dog plush toy. You Mingxu noticed that in one of the photos, the little girl was holding an identical toy.

“Seems he lost what mattered most,” Yin Feng whispered near her ear, “Living forever in memories.”

“That’s still no excuse for his crimes,” You Mingxu said coldly, turning to leave.

Yin Feng watched her walk away, smiled, and followed.

You Mingxu froze as soon as she entered the second room.

The walls were covered with photographs.

Her photographs.

Yin Feng’s expression turned cold as he scanned the room.

You Mingxu approached, looking at each photo while suppressing a chill in her heart. She didn’t even know when these pictures had been taken. Her leaving home; standing with Yin Feng by car; distant shots of her drinking tea in the police station office; eating at small restaurants…

There were forty or fifty photos in total.

After they silently observed for a while, You Mingxu turned to look elsewhere, but Yin Feng blocked her path. She looked up as his hand settled on her neck, gripping gently.

“What are you doing?” You Mingxu asked.

Something dark flickered in Yin Feng’s eyes. He squeezed once before releasing her, saying coldly, “He knows how to cause trouble, trying to disturb us even after death.”

This “he” clearly referred to Gu Tiancheng.

You Mingxu remained silent, turning to look at the desk covered with medicine bottles knocked about, some open with pills scattered across the surface, revealing how much suffering their owner had endured during illness.

There was a folder on the desk. You Mingxu opened it and froze.

It was a pencil sketch. The artist clearly had some skill – the drawing was very lifelike, instantly recognizable as her. She wore the outdoor jacket and pants from her time in Tibet, with short boots and loose hair, carrying a backpack. The expression was vivid too – cold eyes with a hint of smile and trace of pride.

Beside her stood a man.

A man who felt both familiar and strange to You Mingxu.

His appearance and build were Gu Tiancheng’s. But he wore a suit and carried a briefcase. His expression was different too – smiling, appearing cheerful, his eyes fixed on the woman beside him.

The two of them standing together.

You Mingxu tossed the folder back on the desk, expressionless, preparing to leave. Yin Feng suddenly wrapped an arm around her waist and planted a firm kiss on her cheek. You Mingxu pushed him away, only to meet his dark eyes. Neither spoke – what was he thinking, kissing her in a place like this?

She turned and left.

Yin Feng stood there, touching his lips, then coldly eyeing the sketch on the desk. Though it was evidence, his rationality barely controlled his strong urge to tear it apart. Savoring the soft sensation of kissing her cheek, his heart stirred. He couldn’t help smiling, glancing again at the desk’s drawing – what else could the artist get besides drawings? He stuffed his hands in his pockets and walked out.

The third room’s occupant was studious. Besides the bed, there were only books. Books piled on the desk, books on the floor. Biographies, science, mathematics, geography, magazines, military topics… everything. There were even several notebooks filled with dense copied passages.

Seeing this, Xu Mengshan exclaimed, “Could this person have been a top student?”

You Mingxu felt the same – indeed, normal people were all alike. The abnormal each had their own way of being abnormal.

But Yin Feng said, “On the contrary, they were a poor student. Top students would never do this.”

You Mingxu and Xu Mengshan both looked at him. Naturally, Yin Feng would know better about such things.

But it was in this pseudo-scholar’s drawer that they found a stack of photographs. Some were old and yellowed, others new. Each showed a man, and each man’s face was marked with a large red X.

This was a crucial piece of evidence.

You Mingxu’s expression changed slightly. She called Xu Mengshan and others over, but after examining the photos, no one could identify the men. At most, some seemed vaguely familiar. They could only take the photos back to the station.

The search of the apartment was nearly complete.

However, this place defied all the officers’ expectations.

This was their first encounter with a psychopathic killer organization. In their imagination, such a lair should have been dark, filthy, bloody, filled with signs of perversion. Even finding corpses or dismembered bodies wouldn’t have surprised the officers.

Who could have imagined that, except for some photos, books, sketches, and details revealing slight obsession, this place appeared utterly normal? These people drank tea, cooked meals, made soup, took turns cleaning, and exercised. The rooms were clean and bright, and their lifestyle was regular and healthy. They kept their loved ones’ images in their rooms, facing them day after day, month after month.

As You Mingxu left the apartment, she suddenly turned back at the entrance to look at the wall opposite the living room.

Those words leaped out at her in stark black:

“All good is dead, all evil prevails.”
