Chapter 078 – Decision to Perform Autopsy, Fire at the Morgue

Prince Chi’s phoenix eyes narrowed slightly, his long lashes like black feathers casting deep shadows on his eyelids. He glanced at Huo Huai Xin, causing cold sweat to pour down the latter’s face. The Grand Princess slapped the armrest of her chair. “Nonsense! Are you suggesting that Little Seven is suspected of killing Miss Song?! How dare you!”

Huo Huai Xin waved his hands repeatedly. “No, no, no, this official didn’t mean that it’s just… it’s just…”

Huo Huai Xin’s face showed complete guilt as he wiped his sweat and darted his eyes toward Captain Qi. Earlier during their analysis, they had indeed determined that Prince Chi had the opportunity to commit the crime. Though they didn’t understand the full situation, Huo Huai Xin had come here driven by sheer courage. But as soon as the words left his mouth, he regretted them. Private discussion was one thing, but face to-face with Prince Chi, he felt the demon prince’s gaze could flay him alive. Add to that the presence of the Grand Princess and Yue Rong – was it too late to take back his words?

“We just received this information during our investigation. This official is only meant to say that Prince Chi has become a person of interest, not that Prince Chi is the murderer. Thinking about it, that’s impossible, haha…”

Huo Huai Xin was sweating profusely. Though Prince Chi’s eyes showed no anger, his unreadable expression terrified Huo Huai Xin to his core. He felt as if an invisible net had trapped him, pressing down so heavily he couldn’t straighten his back. Frantically wiping his sweat, Huo Huai Xin continued, “Besides, Prince Chi and Miss Song didn’t know each other, so there couldn’t possibly be any grudges between them. Prince Chi has fought at the borders for many years and wouldn’t kill women and children. This official was just mentioning it casually, just mentioning…”

Huo Huai Xin’s regret was eating him alive. Having been in officialdom for many years, he naturally knew the ways of being an official. No matter how just and rigorous the investigation, he couldn’t afford to lose his position. He really shouldn’t have said anything.

“What do you mean by this, Magistrate?” Just as Huo Huai Xin was regretting his words, Yue Ning spoke up from the side. Huo Huai Xin was startled, then heard Yue Ning continue, “It’s good that the Magistrate can be so impartial in his duties. The law applies equally to all, from emperor to commoner. Even though Prince Chi’s status is noble, if he truly has any connection to this case, it should be thoroughly investigated.”

After a pause, Yue Ning added, “There’s one thing the Magistrate may not know.”

Receiving Yue Ning’s affirmation, Huo Huai Xin finally relaxed slightly. Though Yue Ning was a woman uninvolved in politics, she had the Grand Princess’s favor, so her words carried some weight. “What is it?”

Yue Ning glanced at Prince Chi, and seeing only family members in the room, she said, “The person who disguised themselves as a headless corpse to frighten Qin Wan was left-handed, and in the entire mansion, only one person is left-handed.”

Qin Wan’s heart skipped a beat, never expecting Yue Ning to bring this up now. Huo Huai Xin’s eyes widened. “Who? Who is it? Who’s left-handed?!”

Not only was Huo Huai Xin surprised, but even the Grand Princess and others showed grave expressions. If they found the left-handed person, wouldn’t they catch the one who had frightened Qin Wan with the headless corpse?!

Yue Ning narrowed her eyes, her expression stern. “It’s Prince Chi!”

At these words, everyone was shocked!

“What? Little Seven?!” The Grand Princess was the first to disbelieve. She turned to look at Prince Chi. “Little Seven, you’re left-handed?”

Prince Chi glanced at Yue Ning for a moment, then looked at the Grand Princess and nodded. “Grandmother, I can indeed use my left hand. Of course, I can use my right hand as well. The night Ninth Young Lady had her incident, I was in Pine Garden. I was injured, and the Ninth Young Lady came to treat me. After she left, I only learned of her incident when servants reported it. Later, I left Pine Garden with everyone else.”

Yue Rong quickly nodded. “Yes, that’s exactly right.” She cast a warning glance at Yue Ning.

But Yue Ning wasn’t moved by Yue Rong’s look. “When Ninth Young Lady left, we were outside, and you and your guards were in the inner chamber. We all thought you needed rest, so no one went in. That period lasted about the time it takes to drink a cup of tea – long enough for you to go to Plum Garden to frighten Qin Wan and return to Pine Garden. How do you explain that?”

Prince Chi lifted his chin slightly, while Madam Jiang and Yue Rong showed dissatisfied expressions. Not only had they never suspected Prince Chi, but even if they had suspicions, they shouldn’t have spoken like this. This only made Prince Chi appear more suspicious.

Prince Chi looked at Yue Ning’s righteous manner and shook his head. Instead of arguing with her, he turned to Qin Wan. “It seems I must rely on Ninth Young Lady to clear my name of this injustice.”

Qin Wan’s heart was already inclined toward trusting Prince Chi, and after he had saved her tonight, she was even more convinced he had no reason to be Miss Song’s killer. After brief contemplation, Qin Wan said, “Magistrate, Prince Chi camping near the white birch forest and being left-handed alone aren’t enough to determine he’s the killer. At least, we haven’t found Miss Song’s head yet, and we have no clues about the murder weapon. Magistrate needs more evidence to be certain.”

After a pause, Qin Wan said, “Tonight, someone tried to kill me.”

Huo Huai Xin was startled. Still shaken from before, he now heard new information that left him momentarily stunned.

Qin Wan briefly related the night’s events. “That person disguised themselves as the Second Young Master to catch my attention, then lured me under the lantern tower before disappearing. If not for Prince Chi’s rescue, I would have died under that tower. Magistrate, regarding my previous autopsy at the morgue, only those present knew about it besides Young Master Wei. The Marquis and his wife, and the Grand Princess certainly wouldn’t speak of it carelessly. Has there been any leak from your side?”

Huo Huai Xin’s eyes widened, unable to believe someone else had tried to kill Qin Wan.

“Of course not…” Then, as if remembering something, he said, “My son wouldn’t either. Since that day, he’s been confined to his rooms and hasn’t even stepped into the courtyard, let alone left the house. The two servants attending him have been with him constantly – it’s impossible they could have leaked this. Then there’s Xu He – he wouldn’t speak carelessly either.”

Huo Huai Xin raised his eyebrows. “Ninth Young Lady suspects the person trying to harm you knows you’re helping the yamen with autopsies?”

Qin Wan nodded. “Exactly. Otherwise, I pose no threat to anyone – that person shouldn’t be so determined to kill me.” At this thought, Qin Wan suddenly felt a chill as she thought of the Qin mansion, but then she shook her head. If people from the Qin mansion wanted to kill her, they wouldn’t disguise themselves as Yue Qing – no one there knew him well enough.

However, this time seemed similar to how the ninth young lady had been killed – she had been lured there. To others, they probably couldn’t understand why she had walked through that dark alley to another street, just as she couldn’t understand why the ninth young lady had gone to the bamboo grove. Surely, something had lured the ninth young lady to the bamboo grove.

Huo Huai Xin frowned deeply. “So how did the killer know?”

Qin Wan clenched her fists. “We can be certain the killer is within the Marquis’s mansion. It can’t be someone from the Marquis’s household, so the killer must be among Miss Song’s guards or servants…”

Today was supposed to be the Mid-Autumn Festival, a day for the Grand Princess and Madam Jiang to make offerings and pray for blessings, a day for Yue Ning and the younger generation to relax and enjoy themselves. But unexpectedly, they encountered another attempted murder. This attempt pulled everyone back from the festival’s joy, placing before them Song Rou’s death, now shrouded in darker shadows.

“Magistrate, the white birch forest might have been cleaned by the killer, so we found no concrete evidence. Now, we have only two options: first, wait for news from the capital; second, perform an autopsy.”

Qin Wan’s voice was solemn, but as soon as she finished speaking, Wei Yan Zhi spoke up. “Ninth Young Lady, we cannot. Given Xiao Rou’s status, an autopsy is not permissible. Moreover, we must preserve her body well – at least wait until someone comes from the Duke’s mansion.”

Wei Yan Zhi’s face was dark, his eyes showing grief and resistance, his expression extremely sorrowful.

Qin Wan stared unwaveringly into his eyes. “Does Young Master Wei consider an autopsy disrespectful to the deceased?”

Wei Yan Zhi couldn’t meet Qin Wan’s calm, solemn gaze. He had seen her perform autopsies – there was no disrespect to the dead there. Wei Yan Zhi turned his head away. “That’s not it. But our bodies are gifts from our parents. Uncle and Aunt are already heartbroken over Xiao Rou’s death. If they think about her being… after death… they definitely couldn’t accept it. Moreover, Xiao Rou herself probably wouldn’t want to see her body cut up so cruelly and bloodily after death. Xiao Rou’s death was already due to my poor protection – how can I now watch her be… No, we cannot perform an autopsy.”

Qin Wan frowned at Wei Yan Zhi. She was somewhat anxious but not entirely surprised. In the past, she had encountered cases where families refused autopsies on their deceased relatives. However, most had agreed after persuasion. Wei Yan Zhi was an ambitious young man – surely he wouldn’t stubbornly cling to such rules and principles.

Qin Wan took a deep breath. “Young Master Wei, who do you think Song Rou hates most right now?”

“Naturally, the killer…”

“Very well. She has already passed away. Isn’t what she hopes for now that we living people will avenge her and clear her name? If she truly has consciousness in the netherworld, seeing us refuse to use the best methods available, would she feel resentful or comforted?”

Wei Yan Zhi’s face showed pain as Qin Wan continued, “Young Master Wei feels guilty and self-reproachful, but at this time, you should take responsibility for Song Rou. You surely know in your heart what the best method is. Even when her parents arrive, which would be more important to them – finding Song Rou’s killer or preserving her remains?”

“Speaking of remains, after death we’re all just yellow earth and white bones. Young Master Wei should be able to imagine what Miss Song’s body looks like after so many days. Even an autopsy couldn’t make her condition worse. But if we don’t examine her soon, it will affect how quickly we can find the killer. That person who murdered Song Rou might still be walking freely under broad daylight, feeling no remorse for her death, perhaps even gloating that we haven’t found them. Can Young Master Wei accept that?”

Wei Yan Zhi’s brows were tightly knitted, his face showing struggle and hesitation. Though the light in his eyes flickered for a long while, he still shook his head. “No, at least… at least we must first ask the Duke’s mansion’s opinion. I’m also guilty in this matter – I no longer have the right to decide.” Speaking sincerely, he added, “Ninth Young Lady, I’ll send a message by pigeon post to ask Uncle and Aunt at the Duke’s mansion. If they agree, we’ll receive word quickly. Could we perform the autopsy then?”

Jin Zhou was a thousand li from the Duke’s mansion. Even by pigeon post, it would take five or six days round trip. By then, Song Rou’s condition would be far worse than when last seen.

Seeing his determination, Qin Wan couldn’t press further, nor did she have the standing to insist. She turned to Huo Huai Xin, whose forehead was still sweating, feeling even greater pressure. The Song Duke’s mansion held equal status with the An Yang Marquis’s mansion, perhaps even slightly higher – they were a ducal family while An Yang held only a marquis title. Moreover, while the An Yang mansion had the Grand Princess, the Emperor’s aunt, the Song Duke’s mansion had a Noble Consort. The Duke’s eldest daughter had been an imperial consort for ten years, had borne a prince, and remained deeply favored. Comparing this, Huo Huai Xin dared not offend the Duke’s mansion even if he might slight the Marquis.

Sighing deeply, Huo Huai Xin said helplessly, “Very well, we’ll do as Young Master Wei suggests. First, send word to the Duke’s mansion, and wait for the Duke’s approval before performing the autopsy—”

“I don’t think we need such trouble.”

As Huo Huai Xin finished speaking, Prince Chi suddenly spoke. Huo Huai Xin’s brow twitched as he looked over, seeing Prince Chi’s knife-sharp gaze sweep across. Sitting in his chair with a slightly raised chin, his manner carried an overwhelming presence that none could directly face.

“This matter is quite simple, yet we’re stuck on the autopsy. If I were uninvolved, that would be one thing, but just now, the Magistrate said I’ve become suspect. In that case, I think an immediate autopsy would be best.”

Huo Huai Xin’s lips trembled. “Ah? Your Highness, but…”

Prince Chi narrowed his eyes. “You fear the Duke will hold you responsible?”

With a slight curve of his lips, Prince Chi continued, “Don’t worry. If anyone is to be held responsible, let them come to me, Yan Chi.”

Huo Huai Xin was speechless, only glancing toward the Grand Princess and Wei Yan Zhi. Wei Yan Zhi’s face still showed pain and struggle, while the Grand Princess sighed. “Enough! Little Seven is right! If the Duke wants to hold someone responsible, let him come to me! Miss Song was to be our An Yang Marquis mansion’s daughter-in-law, and this happened in Jin Zhou. This old woman will make the decision regardless of appearance. Right now, finding Song Rou’s killer is most important. All other rules, relationships, and etiquette can step aside. I would say this not just to Duke Song, but to His Majesty himself!”

Speaking thus, the Grand Princess fixed her stern gaze on Huo Huai Xin. “Perform the autopsy, with Wan’er’s help. If we can find crucial clues, that’s good. If not, we’ll accept heaven’s will.”

Huo Huai Xin let out a long breath, his eyes brightening slightly as he made his decision. Looking at Wei Yan Zhi, he said, “Young Master Wei, please understand. You need not bear responsibility for this – we’re only trying to find the killer quickly.”

Wei Yan Zhi’s face showed great pain, but at this point, he could say nothing more. Gritting his teeth, he said, “Then… could I see Xiao Rou one more time? I want to pay my respects again. If possible, could I also be present during the Ninth Young Lady’s autopsy? At this point, I think of nothing else but finding the killer.”

Huo Huai Xin thought for a moment, then nodded. “If that’s the case, Young Master Wei may come along.”

Then he looked to the Grand Princess. “When do you think we should perform the autopsy?”

The Grand Princess scanned everyone in the room, then looked at Qin Wan. “In my opinion, the sooner the better. Why not go to the morgue tomorrow morning?”

Qin Wan immediately nodded. “That would be fine with me.”

Huo Huai Xin quickly added, “Good, I’ll give the orders tonight.”

The Grand Princess nodded slightly and exhaled, then looked outside. The night had grown dark. The earlier collapse of the lantern tower had been just a small ripple, not affecting the festivities on Li Shui Lake. Pleasure boats were moving about, with faint sounds of zithers and flutes. “Tonight is still the Mid-Autumn Festival. Let’s set this matter aside for a moment. Those who need to distribute relief can do so, those who need to make offerings can do so, those who want to release lanterns can do so. Things will pass, and life goes on. Tomorrow at the first quarter of the Chen hour – don’t be late. Alright, everyone may disperse.”

With matters settled and the Grand Princess’s words, everyone’s tension eased slightly. Qin Wan stood in place, unconsciously glancing at Wei Yan Zhi, who turned away looking lost and dejected as he walked out. Madam Jiang and Yue Rong needed to distribute relief supplies and left first, instructing servants to bring out the prepared sky lanterns. Yue Qing seemed very interested in the sky lanterns and immediately took one, walking toward Qin Wan.

“Ninth Young Lady, have you ever released one of these?”

Sky lanterns were essential items in Zhou Dynasty festivals and ceremonies. Made of bamboo strips and oiled paper, they had a circular bamboo frame with crossed strips in the middle, supporting a short wick. The oiled paper formed a shade narrowing at the top, fixed to the bamboo circle at the opening. To launch them, one lit the wick, and as the paper shade inflated, the lantern would rise into the sky.

Legend said this craft was invented by a military strategist over a hundred years ago, originally for sending intelligence reports. Common people, not knowing this, saw the bright flying lights as auspicious objects that could reach the heavenly palace. Thus began the tradition of releasing them during festival prayers and ceremonies. Usually, people wrote their wishes on the shade, hoping that when the lanterns reached heaven, the immortals would see and grant them.

Qin Wan shook her head at the lantern Yue Qing offered. “Never.”

Yue Qing’s eyes brightened – this was exactly what he’d hoped for, so he could teach her!

“Then I’ll show you! Come with me…”

Qin Wan followed Yue Qing, not wanting to slight him, but her thoughts were on Wei Yan Zhi. As she walked, she kept watching him. Seeing this, Yue Qing called out, “Brother Yan Zhi, would you like to come to release a sky lantern?”

Wei Yan Zhi had reached the ship’s rail. Hearing this, he shook his head. “No—”

“Why doesn’t Young Master Wei release a lantern to pray for Miss Song’s blessing?”

Qin Wan spoke up, stopping Wei Yan Zhi’s words. He looked at her for a moment, then walked over.

Yue Qing didn’t mind Wei Yan Zhi interrupting his time with Qin Wan. He demonstrated to her, “Look, here’s the wick, see? First spread out this paper shade and lay it flat on the ground, then light the wick. Watch as the shade slowly inflates, then watch it rise into the sky. Isn’t it simple?”

Qin Wan didn’t need Yue Qing’s instruction. Though she’d never released one, she’d seen them before and could tell how they worked at a glance. She nodded absently and asked Wei Yan Zhi, “What will Young Master Wei write on the shade?”

Wei Yan Zhi was spreading out the paper shade as a mansion servant brought over a brush. Taking it without hesitation, he wrote “Peace in the Yellow Springs.” Finishing, he offered the brush to Qin Wan. “What will Ninth Young Lady write?”

Qin Wan took the brush and swiftly wrote “Let Justice be Done.” Yue Qing saw this and frowned. “Why doesn’t Ninth Young Lady write about her matters? If anyone should write about this, it should be Young Master Wei and the Magistrate.”

Qin Wan had already passed the brush to Yue Qing. She curved her lips slightly. “It doesn’t matter who writes it.”

With that, she lit the wick. She wasn’t writing for Song Rou – she was writing for herself. Compared to her father’s wrongful case, Song Rou’s case was much simpler. At least in Song Rou’s case, she could help and do her best.

Yue Qing tilted his head to look at Qin Wan for a moment, then wrote “I Share Ninth Young Lady’s Wish.” Catching this from the corner of her eye, Qin Wan was startled. “Second Young Master needn’t do this, I…”

Yue Qing laughed heartily. “This case has troubled the Marquis’s mansion for so long. Ninth Young Lady’s wish alone isn’t enough – add my wish too! Surely the heavenly immortals will see and grant our wishes!”

All the younger generation had gone outside, leaving only the Grand Princess and the injured Prince Chi in the main cabin. From their position, they could faintly see the silhouettes gathered outside, and Yue Qing’s clear voice carried into the cabin. Hearing Yue Qing’s genuine laughter, the Grand Princess sighed inwardly. Glancing over, she saw Prince Chi sitting in his chair with an unreadable expression, his eyes deep and unfathomable. She sighed again, feeling the situation was becoming complicated.

Outside, Qin Wan’s sky lantern was slowly rising. Watching the lantern she had written her wishes on ascending, Qin Wan felt great hope well up inside her. She finally understood why everyone loved writing blessings on festival lanterns – watching them rise higher and higher truly created an illusion that they would reach the heavenly palace and the immortals’ eyes.

Meanwhile, Yue Qing’s lantern also took flight. “I hope our combined wishes weigh more than others’, so the immortals will see them and grant Ninth Young Lady’s wish.”

Qin Wan felt warmth in her heart. Looking over, she saw Yue Qing’s relaxed expression, his eyes carrying a sincere smile.

Wei Yan Zhi had written his wish first but moved the slowest. He seemed distracted, almost burning the shade while lighting the wick. After several attempts, he finally lit it and began releasing the lantern. As his lantern slowly rose, about to reach the height of Qin Wan and Yue Qing’s lanterns, a sudden breeze made it tilt. This tilt caused the paper shade to catch fire, and though it burned only briefly, it left a large hole. The lantern wobbled and fell, landing diagonally in the lake. Wei Yan Zhi ran to the ship’s rail, watching the lantern’s sparks extinguish in the water.

“Ah, Brother Wei’s lantern! What a shame! Don’t worry, release another one!”

Yue Qing went to get Wei Yan Zhi a new lantern, but Wei Yan Zhi stood pale-faced at the rail. Qin Wan walked over to look, then said to him, “Young Master Wei needn’t mind. It was just the first lantern – it doesn’t mean your wish won’t come true. Once we find the killer, Miss Song will surely rest in peace in the netherworld.”

Wei Yan Zhi bit his lip, his face showing stunned sorrow. He didn’t even take the new lantern Yue Qing offered, instead leaving the boat directly. Qin Wan watched his silhouette grow distant and finally disappear behind the brilliant lantern market displays.

“What’s wrong with Brother Wei?”

Qin Wan lifted her chin slightly. “Perhaps he’s troubled at heart.”

The hour grew late. Though Madam Jiang had prepared many lanterns, Qin Wan only released two more with Yue Ning before the group prepared to return. The Grand Princess’s health required consideration, and Qin Wan had to perform an autopsy early the next morning. Prince Chi’s injury was also everyone’s concern.

“Since Prince Chi is injured, why don’t I escort Ninth Young Lady back?”

At the carriage stop, Yue Qing offered voluntarily. Qin Wan quickly replied, “It’s late, Second Young Master need not escort me. Just let the driver make the trip. Tonight is the festival – the city is as bright as day. Nothing will happen.”

Qin Wan looked earnestly at the Grand Princess, who nodded. “That’s fine. Earlier, who picked up Wan’er…”

“Bai Feng, make a trip.” Before the question was finished, Prince Chi had given the order.

A figure emerged from the darkness. Bai Feng nodded in acknowledgment and went to prepare the carriage. Qin Wan curtsied to Prince Chi in thanks, then bowed to the Grand Princess and others before boarding. Soon, the carriage began moving slowly. Qin Wan was headed to the east city, so her carriage went first. This time, the Marquis’s household didn’t travel with her long, as they needed to return the Grand Princess home early.

“Miss, today was truly dangerous. Thankfully Prince Chi saved you.”

In the carriage, Fu Ling’s face showed lingering fear. She continued, “I released seven lanterns, each wishing for Miss’s safety. Last time it was falling into the lake, this time nearly being crushed by a lantern tower – I’m truly terrified!”

Qin Wan patted Fu Ling’s arm reassuringly. “Seven lanterns – surely the heavenly immortals will see your wishes. Don’t worry, they’ll protect me from now on.” She smiled. “I released three, and one also wished for our safety as mistress and servant. The immortals will protect us both.”

Perhaps Qin Wan’s warm smile calmed Fu Ling’s heart, as she said no more. After about half an hour, the carriage stopped outside the Qin mansion gates. Qin Wan lifted the curtain and had just stepped down when Bai Feng spoke.

“Ninth Young Lady, please wait. This is what my master asked me to give you…”

Qin Wan was about to leave but turned back. As she turned, she saw Bai Feng holding a lotus lantern – the very one she had bought and Prince Chi had retrieved. Qin Wan frowned, having forgotten it when she left!

“Just the lotus lantern?”

Qin Wan stepped forward to take it, somewhat confused. She had left both the lotus lantern and the Xiezhi mask in the cabin where she had treated Prince Chi. If he was returning the lantern, shouldn’t he have returned the mask as well?

Bai Feng shook his head. “This servant doesn’t know.”

Qin Wan sighed, thanked him repeatedly, and only then returned home. Looking at the still faintly glowing lotus lantern in her hand, Qin Wan felt a strange yet wonderful stirring in her heart.

Having to leave early the next morning, Qin Wan didn’t dare delay. She hung the lotus lantern in a prominent place by her bed, bathed, and lay down, extinguishing all other lamps in the room except this lotus lantern. Its soft glow resembled a distant, cold star in the sky, also remarkably like Prince Chi’s eyes – as deep as the night yet occasionally showing glimmers of starlight.

She slept dreamlessly, and when Qin Wan opened her eyes the next morning, she felt refreshed. She dressed efficiently, with Fu Ling helping her don a thicker cape. As agreed, they would meet at the first quarter of the Chen hour, so the Marquis’s household would send someone to pick her up after half of the Mao hour. Her early departure naturally caught the attention of the four “Wan” servants in the courtyard, but for some reason, seeing Wan Xing standing at the end of the four paying respects gave Qin Wan a slight sense of peace.

Leaving the courtyard for the west side gate, Qin Wan saw Bai Feng waiting outside before she even reached it. Her heart steadied, but as she drew closer, she noticed that Bai Feng’s usually calm face showed signs of agitation. He was even pacing back and forth, his brows tightly knitted. Qin Wan’s heart skipped a beat – something must have happened!

“Guard Bai—”

Qin Wan hurried out, calling to him first.

Bai Feng turned, saw Qin Wan emerge, and quickly came forward to bow. Then, glancing at the Qin mansion’s gatekeepers, he said in an extremely low voice, “Ninth Young Lady, I’m afraid we can’t perform the autopsy—”

Qin Wan raised an eyebrow. “What happened?”

Bai Feng’s eyes concentrated. “Last night, the morgue caught fire!”
