On their tenth wedding anniversary, Cen Jin took a day off. She tied her hair in a high ponytail, wore a sweater and skirt, checked her husband’s class schedule for the semester, and secretly snuck into his lecture hall.
She arrived just as class was ending, slipping in against the flow of departing students. Finding a seat near the back, she prayed Li Wu wouldn’t notice her too quickly.
Soon, the physics students filed in, quickly filling the classroom with bustling noise.
Cen Jin rested her chin on her hand, face half-lowered, pretending to read a “book.” Her youthful appearance blended in perfectly with the university students, so no one paid her much attention.
Besides, there were always students from other classes sitting in, so one unfamiliar face wasn’t unusual.
The bell rang for the third period, and Li Wu entered right on time.
The class fell silent instantly, and Cen Jin quickly lowered her head.
The man walked to the podium, briefly scanning the class before removing his coat, placing it on the desk, and setting up the projector and microphone.
His gray turtleneck sweater accentuated his tall figure, his demeanor unchanged over the decade, undiminished by time.
This was the “Atomic Physics” class.
When Li Wu turned to write on the whiteboard, Cen Jin finally raised her head, freely admiring his back.
After finishing writing, Li Wu turned around and began reviewing the previous lesson’s content.
His voice still carried that clear, melting-ice quality from his youth, but his tone was measured and confident.
Cen Jin’s lips curved up. Though she had witnessed his transformation from an eager student to an enlightening teacher, being here in person still felt wonderfully fascinating.
Sudden whispers broke out in the class.
For some reason, Professor Li, known for his rare displays of emotion, suddenly paused when his gaze reached a certain point, then inexplicably smiled – a full smile showing teeth, like spring’s return or clearing rain.
Cen Jin realized she’d been caught and identified. She could only smile back, pressing a finger to her lips, signaling him to keep quiet.
The man at the podium understood, continuing his lecture, but couldn’t help stealing glances whenever possible.
The teacher’s “sudden excitement” and frequently wandering gaze in one direction left students puzzled, making them search around curiously.
Cen Jin mentally covered her face, having to pretend to sleep.
Li Wu cleared his throat, amplified by the microphone, then said seriously: “Would certain students please pay attention and not sleep during my class.”
Cen Jin’s head shot up, glaring at him.
Someone dared to doze off in this strict teacher’s class? Everyone looked around for this brave soul.
Li Wu stared steadily in her direction, lips slightly curved: “Oh, it’s my wife – then keep sleeping.” He removed his glasses, no longer hiding his double standard and smiling eyes: “I can turn a blind eye.”
Ahhhh―
All at once, as students realized Cen Jin was present, they erupted in whoops and cheers.
The woman at the center of attention’s ears turned bright red, but she had to maintain composure, smiling at the students.
Sweet as the moment was, she wished she could disappear into the ground.
Li Wu leisurely explained from the podium: “This is one of our tenth wedding anniversary activities. You don’t mind, do you?”
What could the students do after being force-fed this dog food? They could only grumble internally while saying “OK, no problem” out loud.
During the next class period, Li Wu responsibly completed his work, even though the students’ attention had largely shifted to Cen Jin.
After class, Li Wu unhurriedly packed up while students eagerly gathered around their teacher’s wife, chatting with her before gradually dispersing.
Once everyone had left, Li Wu put on his coat and walked to the back to meet Cen Jin.
He reached for her hand, but she irritably pushed it away.
“What?” Li Wu smiled at her, undeterred, again holding out his long-fingered hand.
Cen Jin gave him a sideways glance, not moving: “I just wanted to secretly come listen to your class, but you had to make such a big scene.”
He forcefully took her hand, refusing to let go: “I couldn’t help smiling when I saw you. What could I do? Better to just admit it.”
Cen Jin touched her hair, muttering: “Now all your students know your wife likes pretending to be young.”
Li Wu looked her up and down, smiling without comment.
Cen Jin was about to pull out her hair tie when Li Wu stopped her.
His attitude was completely different from when he was at the podium, he pleaded: “Keep it up, it looks so pretty.”
“How is it pretty?”
“Everything about it is pretty.”
“Only you think so.”
Li Wu glanced at the door: “Should I call in a student to ask?”
“No need,” Cen Jin raised an eyebrow: “I’m naturally beautiful.”
Li Wu’s lips curved up as he held her hand tighter.
After accompanying him to his office to drop off course materials, they walked to the parking lot together.
As they were campus celebrities, Cen Jin benefited from Li Wu’s status, receiving many sideways glances from students along the way.
Cen Jin glanced at him: “Why do I feel like your students are all afraid of you?”
Li Wu replied: “Because I’m stern.”
“Why are you stern with them?”
“The learning opportunities they take for granted are what many children can only dream of, yet they don’t cherish them, just skipping class, sleeping, and playing on their phones,” Li Wu reasoned: “I have to be stern.”
Cen Jin patted her chest as if still shocked: “I used to sleep in class too in college. Good thing I didn’t have a teacher like you.”
Li Wu’s dimples showed: “Meeting me wouldn’t have been a problem – I’d have handled it like today.”
Cen Jin scoffed: “I don’t believe you. You didn’t even know me then, yet you claim you wouldn’t have been stern.”
She started criticizing after the fact: “You were stern with me today.”
Li Wu was completely puzzled: “When was I stern with you?”
Cen Jin quoted his words and tone exactly: “‘Would certain students please pay attention and not sleep during my class’ – who said that?”
Li Wu defended himself: “That’s because you wouldn’t look at me or let me look at you.”
Cen Jin side-eyed him: “So I can’t try to avoid disrupting Professor Li’s class order?”
“No,” Li Wu put on a serious face, breaking into a smile a second later: “It’s our tenth anniversary today. I can’t neglect you when you come to visit.”
“You said ‘one of’ our activities in class,” Cen Jin raised an eyebrow: “Do you have other plans?”
Li Wu nodded.
“What?”
“We’re going to burn incense and pray at a temple.”
“What??” Cen Jin thought she’d misheard, expecting something like a candlelit dinner or flowers and jewelry.
Li Wu stopped, turning to look at her, his eyes forever pure and uncorrupted, overflowing with youthful spirit: “To pray that we’ll be together in our next life too.”
“How old are you? Why are you still so boyishly romantic? Is this what someone in their thirties should say and do?”
“Aren’t you dressed quite girlishly too?”
“…Let’s go already.”
…
Ten years isn’t enough – even a hundred years pass in the blink of an eye.
They are like two entangled particles, unaffected by space and time.
The final judgment is not the end, a new chapter continues to be written, and there is only one theme for eternal love: Through all lives and worlds, vast as heaven and earth, I will always find you.
