Chapter 4: Destiny

Yi Tianyu?

Xue Jiao was stunned for a few seconds. She had met this person and his father at the bookstore yesterday. They had bought quite a few books, though ultimately her books had been burned in that fire.

Yi Tianyu was just as confused. After a moment, he finally said, “What a coincidence! You’re also in the experimental class?”

Xue Jiao nodded and walked past him into the classroom.

Yi Tianyu was briefly taken aback, then smirked. This girl was arrogant. No wonder she had been buying this and that at the bookstore yesterday—she was a top student.

He touched the basketball in his hand, feeling somewhat listless. The sun outside was fierce, creating an inexplicable sense of irritation just by looking at it.

He bounced the basketball twice and then walked back to the classroom.

Having just been divided into arts and science tracks, the experimental class consisted of elites from various classes, making it essentially a brand new class where many students didn’t know each other.

So when Xue Jiao entered the room, although people occasionally stole glances at this beautiful girl, no one connected her with Gu Xue Jiao.

“Gu Xue Jiao!” Cheng Mingjiao called out loudly. As soon as this name was uttered, several students in the class turned to look in shock.

They had all been in the same class as Gu Xue Jiao before. She was often absent or requesting leave, so students from other classes didn’t know her, but within her class, she had quite a “reputation.”

This refined young girl was the former delinquent?! They were shocked.

Xue Jiao didn’t mind. She nodded and casually found a seat to sit down.

She didn’t speak, and apart from some murmurs, no one spoke to her either.

After Cheng Mingjiao had pointed out her identity, she ignored her too, only chatting with a few new female friends about Gu Xue Jiao.

Xue Jiao still wore her headphones, sitting quietly at her seat, seriously listening to the listening comprehension exercises through her headphones.

She had been sitting for quite a while when a female teacher wearing high heels walked in.

“Quiet!”

Teacher Yin Fang had always been in charge of the experimental class and was a “grades-only” advocate. Having been at this nationally renowned high school for so many years, she was accustomed to students who had bought their way into the experimental class. Her consistent attitude was coldness, waiting for the end of the semester to kick them out.

She stood on the podium, scanning the students below, her face very cold.

“Let me introduce myself. Yin Fang. I’ll be your class teacher from now on. I teach English.” Her gaze swept sharply over each person. “You are all elites of this grade. You all know the situation in the experimental class. If you don’t work hard, you can leave next semester.”

This statement frightened the students, which satisfied her. After writing her name on the blackboard, she clapped her hands.

“Alright, now let’s arrange the seating.”

She took out a sheet of paper. “This is the grade sheet. Seats will be arranged according to grades.”

“First place, Shang Zhiyuan.”

This person was quite tall. Yin Fang let him choose a position in the fourth or fifth row in the middle. Shang Zhiyuan clearly understood his height issue and chose a seat in the middle of the fifth row.

“Second place, Liu Jiaxue.”

Liu Jiaxue was of medium height among the girls, so Yin Fang let her choose a seat in the first four rows.

When it came to the tenth place, Cheng Mingjiao looked at Xue Jiao, who was still standing at the back, with a challenging expression.

Yi Tianyu slowly edged over and bumped into her.

This sudden collision almost made Xue Jiao fall onto the person next to her. She barely managed to steady herself.

“I’m sorry!” She first apologized to the person beside her, then looked at Yi Tianyu with a dark face. “What are you doing?!”

Yi Tianyu rubbed his nose. “I barely used any force…”

Xue Jiao couldn’t be bothered with him.

Yi Tianyu continued to ask, “Hey, what place did you rank?”

Xue Jiao still ignored him.

Yi Tianyu rolled his eyes and complained, “What’s there to be so arrogant about!”

The seating arrangement continued vigorously until only four out of the fifty-six students remained.

These four were those who had used connections to get in.

There weren’t many students at No. 7 High School who used connections, precisely because of that rule about expelling students after one semester. Many with insufficient grades wouldn’t use connections.

But there were always some parents who wished for their children to soar like dragons or phoenixes…

Now only two seats near the trash can and two seats near the door remained. This time, Yin Fang didn’t let them choose.

“Alright, Gu Xue Jiao, Yi Tianyu, sit over there. Qi Lei, Xi Junyang, go over there.” Considering that Xue Jiao was a girl, she didn’t make her sit near the trash can.

Xue Jiao’s face turned slightly pale. She wasn’t tall, and the tall student sitting in front of her in the last row almost completely blocked her view.

Moreover, in her previous life, she had always been a teacher’s pet, but in this life, she had become someone the teachers didn’t want to see…

Because of these things, her mood wasn’t good. She lowered her head slightly, not noticing her seatmate’s constantly shrugging shoulders.

“Alright, the seating is temporarily arranged. It may change at any time. Now let’s choose class officers…”

The matter of class officers had nothing to do with Xue Jiao. She kept her head down, feeling very unhappy.

Yin Fang was extremely efficient. Not only did she quickly arrange the seats, but she also selected class officers quickly.

The class monitor was the self-nominated Xi Junyang, the study representative was the second-ranked Liu Jiaxue, the arts and culture representative was the nominated Cheng Mingjiao, and the sports representative was her desk mate—Yi Tianyu.

Almost as soon as Yin Fang had arranged everything, it was lunchtime.

“Alright, everyone rest well at noon. At two o’clock, the class monitor and sports representative should bring some boys to fetch our class’s books and distribute them!”

“Yes!” Unlike Xue Jiao’s terrible mood, Yi Tianyu, who had been happy since the seating arrangement, loudly responded with a single word.

As soon as Yin Fang left, the classroom became lively.

“Hahahahaha—” Almost as soon as she left, Yi Tianyu collapsed laughing on the desk, pointing at Xue Jiao with glee.

Xue Jiao frowned.

“Hahahahaha! So you’re a poor student! Heh, I thought you were a great scholar! ‘Self-studied the second-year curriculum’? Hahahahaha!! Are you trying to make me laugh to death?”

Boys of this age were boisterous and confident, not knowing how to restrain themselves.

Xue Jiao glared at him and stood up.

“Hey, are you angry?”

“No!” She quickened her pace.

Yi Tianyu had long legs and wasn’t left behind. He continued to catch up, looking down at her: “If you’re not angry, why are you running?”

Xue Jiao stopped for a moment, steadied herself, and took a deep breath: “Yi Tianyu, because… I’m going to eat now!”

After saying that, she continued walking quickly towards the cafeteria.

Yi Tianyu stopped, twisted his mouth, and from the distant basketball court, the voices of several tall boys carried over—

“Yu-ge! Want to play basketball?”

“Coming!”

——

Others might not recognize the clean-faced Gu Xue Jiao, but her “sister” Gu Shiyun recognized her at a glance.

When Xue Jiao sat down at the table in front of her meal, Gu Shiyun saw her.

She didn’t like how Xue Jiao looked with a clean face. That delicate face always reminded her of her childhood, of how her mother would only dare to secretly take her to watch that family of three.

Father would happily hold this little princess in his arms, laughing, while she could only watch secretly from behind.

Fortunately, everything was hers now.

Father was hers, and she was the Miss Gu.

“Shiyun, what are you looking at?” the two girls beside her asked.

Gu Shiyun smiled, very gently, and shook her head: “Nothing.”

She put down her chopsticks, took out her phone, and sent a message.

Looking at Gu Xue Jiao with cold eyes, her lips curved slightly upward.

She didn’t want to see Gu Xue Jiao. The first year of high school had been good—that girl wore heavy makeup and rarely came to school.

The cafeteria food at No. 7 High School was more than a level better than the cafeteria food from Xue Jiao’s high school in her previous life. The Cheng family wasn’t short of money. That morning, Cheng Shuo had loaded ten thousand yuan onto her meal card, saying it was her living expenses for the semester.

She couldn’t use it all up no matter how she ate. It felt so good not to worry about living expenses.

Xue Jiao’s lips curved upward in satisfaction as she picked up her chopsticks.

——

After lunch, almost everyone returned to the classroom.

Yi Tianyu led several boys in carrying books into the classroom, batch after batch, while Yin Fang stood on the podium, directing everyone to distribute the books.

Xue Jiao’s eyes shone brightly as she stared at those books.

The second year of high school was the most intense year for knowledge acquisition. Six science subjects, each with a textbook and two supplementary books. Other classes only had one supplementary book, but the experimental class was special with two.

All these books and notebooks, stacked together, filled the desk.

Xue Jiao neatly stacked the books on her desk as soon as she received them, not rushing to put them in the drawer.

Next to her, Yi Tianyu dumped all his books into the drawer at once, making a loud “thud” sound.

After putting away his books, he saw his deskmate sitting upright, her back straight as a ramrod.

He watched as she placed her books one by one in neat stacks on the desk, then took out a pile of uniform-colored checkered book covers from her drawer. To his astonishment, she carefully and meticulously covered each book.

“Pfft—” Yi Tianyu almost choked, then burst into laughter. “Hahahaha! Gu Xue Jiao, are you a primary school student? Who still covers books these days? Hahaha, you’re going to make me die of laughter!”

What interrupted Yi Tianyu’s laughter wasn’t Xue Jiao, but Yin Fang.

“Quiet!”

Her sharp gaze swept over the two of them as she raised her voice: “Yi Tianyu, Gu Xue Jiao! Stand up!”

Xue Jiao was stunned for a moment, then stood up bewilderedly with the book in her hand.

“What are you discussing that’s so amusing? Tell me, I’d like to hear it.”

Xue Jiao was completely stunned. She knew she had been caught in the crossfire. Because of her poor grades, she was naturally viewed as a thorn in the teacher’s side, and the teacher instinctively assumed they were talking, which made Yi Tianyu laugh out loud.

“What? Can’t say it?” Yin Fang sneered. “Everyone else is quiet, but you two are laughing in the back. You don’t have to study yourself, but can you not affect others?”

“I don’t care how well-off your families are or how you got into this class. Now that you’re here, you must follow the rules. I don’t care if you don’t study, but if you chat and laugh during class and affect others, I’ll have to ask you to leave! This is the first time, but I hope it’s the last. Do other students understand?!”

“Yes!” Fifty-some students responded simultaneously.

Only then did Yin Fang say, “Alright, sit down.”

Xue Jiao lowered her head and sat down sullenly.

She could still feel the mocking gazes of others on her. This was an experience she had never had before, yet it was humiliating and embarrassing.

Xue Jiao kept her head down, stiffly covering her books. Yi Tianyu glanced at her several times, and only when Yin Fang went out to answer a phone call did he turn his head to speak: “Hey, what’s wrong with you?”

There was no response. The person beside him continued covering her books as if she hadn’t heard him speak.

“Hey!”

Yi Tianyu moved his head closer, suddenly froze, and asked stupidly: “Are you crying?”

Xue Jiao still didn’t raise her head. Only a transparent teardrop fell onto the desk with a “plop.”

Yi Tianyu shrank like a quail, not making a sound.

——

After covering all her books, Xue Jiao’s mood also calmed down. She wasn’t a fragile person. Being scolded by the teacher and crying this time was probably not just because of humiliation.

More than that—it was the confusion of facing a new world. No matter how calm she was, she had changed from one person to another.

This person had complicated familial relationships and had left her a huge mess…

These two tears were more of an outlet for emotion.

Yin Fang walked in again, her face stern as she said: “The school has notified you that this afternoon and evening you will go to the dormitories to clean and organize your things. Day students can go home.”

She paused: “Classes will officially begin tomorrow morning. Everyone must quickly get focused. You’ll be in your third year next year, don’t think the college entrance exam is far away. If you want to do well in the college entrance exam, you need to start working hard from today! Finally, especially for day students, pay attention to safety, understand!”

“Understood!”

After Yin Fang finished speaking, she walked out in her high heels. Xue Jiao looked at the black and white checkered covers in her drawer, identical to those from her previous life, neatly arranged.

She didn’t even need to look at the names on the sides to know which book was which.

So what if she had changed bodies?

She was still herself, Xue Jiao, and now also Gu Xue Jiao.

She could still sit in a high school classroom and try again, achieving even better results than before.

Gu Xue Jiao’s eyes gradually brightened. She took out a math book and a physics book, put them in her backpack, and left the classroom.

Yi Tianyu, who hadn’t dared to make a sound, stared blankly at her retreating figure, scratched his head, and shifted his gaze to her drawer—

“Looks pretty nice.”

——

Just as she walked out of the school gate.

“Gu Xue Jiao!” A voice is both familiar and strange.

Xue Jiao took a deep breath, knowing that another mess left behind by Gu Xue Jiao had arrived.

Even though she knew, she was still stunned when she looked up.

Four girls, each looking similar to what Xue Jiao had seen in the mirror when she first arrived—heavy makeup, ultra-short shorts, tops so short they exposed their midriffs.

Her lips twitched as she stared foolishly at the nearly identical faces before her.

“Gu Xue Jiao! Why didn’t you come to find us? Didn’t we agree to hang out together before school started?” The leader, Li Wan, had sharper eyes that stared directly at her, her voice cold.

“No time.” Xue Jiao touched her backpack strap.

Having “read” this book, Xue Jiao knew that these people were Gu Xue Jiao’s “best” friends, girls from a vocational high school on another street. They were also the ones who later tricked her to a remote area, where she was raped and videotaped for blackmail.

“Hey! Gu Xue Jiao! Are you betraying us?” one of the girls shouted, drawing the attention of people at the school gate.

Li Wan stepped forward. “Gu Xue Jiao, we’re best friends. Even if you don’t want to talk to us anymore, you should at least give us a reason, right? Are you such an ungrateful person?”

She approached Gu Xue Jiao, looking at her face, with undisguised jealousy in her eyes.

Xue Jiao was slightly shorter than Li Wan. She raised her head, but her presence wasn’t any less imposing.

“No, this isn’t betrayal. It’s turning from darkness to light.”

Li Wan was stunned for a moment, then said angrily: “Gu Xue Jiao?! Are you choosing to oppose us?!”

Xue Jiao didn’t respond and walked past them.

“You—” Li Wan reached out, intending to grab her hair, but her hand was intercepted mid-air.

Li Wan turned around, then stuttered: “Cheng Mingze—”

Author’s note: Lin Zhihua (with a forty-meter-long saber): Come on, seriously tell me, what’s wrong with being impotent?!
