Chapter 2: The First Man to Exit West of Liangshan

After several more days, the north wind rose with great force, and the climate turned severely cold. All the palace maids and eunuchs wore fur coats, and though the soldiers also added clothing, their iron armor formed a thin layer of frost, making their suffering even greater.

Since the incident, Qin Zhonghai had become doubly careful. Following Lu Yun’s suggestion, he deployed five hundred soldiers divided into one hundred small teams of five men each, spaced half a li apart, scattered before and behind, left and right of the main army. Whenever something happened, they would raise wolf smoke as a signal. This method proved very effective – all matters, large and small, remained under the main army’s control, and the journey was quite peaceful.

This day they reached a certain place and suddenly saw a towering mountain in the distance, majestic and magnificent, with clouds and mist swirling around it, giving an impression of lofty solitude. Qin Zhonghai sat on his horse, raised his whip to point at it, and asked: “What mountain peak is that? How did it grow to be so precipitous?”

Xue Nu’er nearby sneered: “You don’t even know this – what a shame you’re still the court’s roving general.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “If Deputy Director Xue knows, then speak frankly. I’ve always believed ‘not knowing means not knowing’ – I never put on airs.” Xue Nu’er, having gained verbal advantage, felt quite pleased and smiled: “Since you admit your ignorance, I’ll tell you! This mountain is none other than the once-famous ‘Mount Nucang’!”

Hearing the three words “Mount Nucang,” Qin Zhonghai couldn’t help feeling startled: “This is the place where over thirty thousand troops once gathered to fight a great battle against the court?”

Xue Nu’er chuckled: “How could it be false? When we exterminated the bandits, I also made great contributions. Even if this mountain turned to ash, I would recognize it.”

Qin Zhonghai looked up and saw what appeared to be some buildings still on the mountaintop. He couldn’t help exclaiming in alarm: “Could there still be bandits gathering on this mountain? If they set an ambush here, wouldn’t we be in trouble?”

Xue Nu’er laughed: “Mount Nucang was long ago exterminated by the court. The remaining people either died or scattered – it became a ruin twenty years ago. What’s there to fear?”

As everyone was talking, they suddenly saw wolf smoke rising in the distance. Lu Yun quickly said: “There’s trouble ahead – let’s go take a look!” Qin Zhonghai nodded: “I’ll go see as well.” He asked Censor He to command the central army and guard the princess, while the two spurred their horses forward together to investigate.

The two rode swiftly ahead, and after a short time saw several of their soldiers hiding in a mountain hollow, constantly peering outward. Lu Yun and Qin Zhonghai dismounted and hurried forward. A small soldier hastily came to meet them, saying in a low voice: “Ahead there’s a group of strangely-dressed martial world people gathering at a ruined temple. We don’t know their intentions. Fearing these people might have ulterior motives, we sent someone back to report to the General.”

Qin Zhonghai nodded slightly and also peered out to see a ruined temple in the distance that appeared long neglected and extremely dilapidated. Around the temple stood four men and women, walking back and forth near the temple entrance, their activities unknown.

Qin Zhonghai said: “I’ll go down to take a look and return shortly. Brother Lu, you stay here to provide support.”

Lu Yun agreed. Qin Zhonghai then leaped down, keeping low as he ran forward about a hundred zhang before hiding behind a large rock. Seeing his extraordinarily swift movement technique, Lu Yun thought: “General Qin’s martial arts are unfathomably deep. Though he’s called ‘Fire-Greedy Single Blade,’ I’ve never heard of his master or background – I wonder what sect he comes from?”

After concealing himself well, Qin Zhonghai peered out to see a woman standing gracefully, about thirty years old. This woman was quite beautiful, but her face was full of sorrow – some great heartbreak had apparently caused such painful distress.

Qin Zhonghai turned to look at the other three, who had strange appearances. One was fair and clean, originally seeming like a handsome man, but his two front teeth protruded, making him look exactly like a rabbit. Another was short and fat with a very short neck but an extremely large body, resembling a turtle. The last was exceptionally tall with a long, dark gray face that was quite frightening, his small eyes slanting upward and his nostrils pointing skyward – he looked exactly like a wild bull.

Qin Zhonghai pondered: “These people have bizarre appearances, each one strange and eccentric. I wonder what their background is? This place was once Mount Nucang’s main stronghold – could it be that martial world figures are meeting and gathering here? That would be very bad news.”

As he was thinking, he suddenly heard the woman call out: “Brother Xiang! If you don’t come out of this temple, what are we few to do? Are we to watch the mountain stronghold fall into desolation? Come out quickly and take charge!”

The rabbit-like man beside her called: “Yes! Can you bear to watch us fend for ourselves? Come out quickly!”

Qin Zhonghai felt curious: “So these people are connected to Mount Nucang. According to Xue Nu’er, wasn’t this stronghold abandoned for twenty years? How can there still be remnants? This is truly strange.” He focused his attention on watching, wanting to investigate the matter thoroughly.

After a long time, no one in the temple responded – it remained silent for a very long time.

Qin Zhonghai thought secretly: “If someone were hiding in the temple, why doesn’t anyone answer? Could these people be deliberately mystifying?” As he was watching, the turtle-like man shouted loudly: “If you don’t come out, I’m going in!” He then rushed toward the temple door.

Just as the man’s feet moved and his body touched the door, he inexplicably fell backward, tumbling several times. Qin Zhonghai was greatly startled. Though it was only an instant, he had seen a small stone fly from the temple, striking the turtle-like man and immediately sending him flying. This internal energy was truly extraordinary, making Qin Zhonghai secretly alarmed.

The woman angrily said: “If you won’t come out, then don’t come out – but what do you mean by hitting Old Fourth Tao like this? Do you no longer care about brotherhood?”

The rabbit-like man beside her gave a great shout and leaped high, jumping straight toward the rooftop – his lightness skill was quite good. Suddenly another stone flew from the temple. The rabbit-like man quickly reached out to block it, but as his palm touched the flying stone, his whole body shook as if struck by lightning, and he fell from mid-air like a dog eating excrement.

The turtle-like man shouted: “Little Rabbit, let’s attack together!” Little Rabbit gave a great cry, and the two rushed forward together. Suddenly two more stones flew from the temple, striking their ankles. The two cried out “Ah!” and fell to the ground, groaning and unable to get up for a long time.

Qin Zhonghai thought: “The martial arts of the person in the temple are quite brilliant – probably a hundred times superior to these two. Looking at this person’s martial skills, if he truly wanted to kill, one strike would take their lives.”

Seeing his companions unable to stand for a long time, the bull-like man made rumbling roars, apparently very angry. He strode forward with a martial bearing, showing no fear whatsoever. Seeing his steady steps and solid lower body foundation, Qin Zhonghai thought: “This person’s external martial arts are practiced extremely well – definitely incomparable to those two. I wonder how the person in the temple will handle him?”

The bull-like man reached out to push the door and enter. Suddenly another small stone flew out, striking his body. The man gave a “Wuwa!” cry and puffed out his chest, forcibly receiving the flying stone. With a sound like striking a great drum, the Iron Bull only panted for a moment before reaching out to push the door again. Clearly he had practiced “Golden Bell Cover,” “Iron Shirt,” or similar external hard martial arts – otherwise how could he withstand the powerful internal energy attached to the flying stone?

With a “creak,” the door was pushed open a crack. Qin Zhonghai was curious to see what person was hiding in the temple. Just then, another flying stone was thrown, this time with much stronger force and extremely fierce wind sound – clearly the internal power contained within far exceeded the previous stones. Qin Zhonghai thought: “This will be bad – if this Iron Bull insists on resisting, he’ll probably die on the spot.”

The flying stone shot rapidly toward Iron Bull, but he didn’t block or dodge at all, only puffing out his chest high, practically throwing his life away. The sound of the flying stone was extremely urgent – if it struck Iron Bull’s chest, it would certainly be a disaster of being split open and gutted.

Suddenly Iron Bull stumbled aside. Qin Zhonghai looked carefully and saw the woman had acted to save him. She forcefully crashed into Iron Bull, pushing him several chi away. The flying stone missed its target and shot out, violently striking the large rock beside Qin Zhonghai. With a light “crack,” stone fragments flew everywhere, splashing onto Qin Zhonghai’s face with burning pain.

Qin Zhonghai felt a chill in his heart: “How formidable! This person’s hand strength has real skill, comparable to Shaolin Temple’s hard martial arts.”

As Qin Zhonghai was marveling, he suddenly heard the woman burst into loud weeping, beating her chest and stomping her feet in inconsolable grief. The woman cried: “How bitter is my fate! My husband has been missing for twenty years, my own brother died in battle, and after twenty years I’ve aged while my great revenge remains unrevenged. Now even old friends are so heartless – what am I to do?” She cried more and more sorrowfully. The Iron Bull beside her was very anxious, constantly making “Wu wu” sounds as if wanting to console her, but unable to speak. Qin Zhonghai understood – Iron Bull was mute.

Suddenly the woman gave a great cry, and a dagger appeared in her hand. She said miserably: “I originally thought that relying on old friends, there might be a glimmer of hope for revenge, but who knew he would be so ruthless and unfeeling, even wanting to kill his own brothers… Wu… Wu… I’d rather die than live – better to end it all today!” She thrust toward her own heart with extreme speed. Though Iron Bull was beside her, he couldn’t stop her in time. The turtle-like man cried loudly: “Big Sister, no!” But it was too late.

Suddenly they heard a sigh from the temple, and a flying stone shot out, striking the woman’s wrist. Her hand went numb and the dagger fell to the ground. Her phoenix eyes opened wide in anger: “Since you won’t come out to help, you also won’t let me die – what exactly do you want?”

A hoarse voice came from the temple: “Twenty years… sigh… You people come to bother me every year – what exactly do you want to do?” Little Rabbit and the turtle-like man cheered loudly: “He spoke! Brother Xiang finally spoke!”

The woman showed no joy and said sternly: “You say I’ve been bothering you for twenty years – then what about you? What do you want by hiding in this broken temple like a shrinking turtle for twenty years!”

The voice in the temple sighed and said quietly: “I have my reasons – don’t blame me.” The woman shouted: “You have your reasons? How many people in the world can control their own fate? As long as you shrink your head and don’t come out for one day, I’ll come bother you every day!”

The person said quietly: “Stop disturbing me – it’s no good for anyone.” His words seemed to contain infinite sorrow and endless unspeakable difficulties.

The woman called: “I understand – are you imprisoned here by someone? I’ll help you break down the temple door and seek justice together!”

She completely forgot that the person in the temple’s martial arts far exceeded her own. If someone could imprison her old friend here, their martial arts must be supernatural. With their limited martial skills, how could they be a match?

The person sighed: “Don’t say anymore – leave quickly! By speaking out this time, I’ve already violated a taboo. Go quickly!”

The woman called: “What taboo? With your martial arts, what taboo could you fear?”

Suddenly they heard a voice laugh: “Since it’s a taboo, one must fear it – otherwise it wouldn’t be called a taboo!” The voice was shrill with an androgynous quality. Everyone turned around and shouted: “Who’s there?”

They saw a person approaching without feet touching ground like a ghost, face covered with thick white powder and lips painted bright red – an extremely demonic appearance. Qin Zhonghai was suddenly alarmed: “How did this ‘Flower Demon’ also come here? Does he know these people?”

The newcomer was indeed the Eastern Depot’s Deputy Director, known as the “Flower Demon” – Xue Nu’er.

Xue Nu’er chuckled coldly at the temple door: “Xiang Tianshou, I never thought you would truly keep your word, staying in this small temple for twenty years – worthy of being the former Hall Master of ‘Great Courage Hall.'” From his words, he clearly knew the person in the temple. Qin Zhonghai pondered: “So that person is called Xiang Tianshou. How does he know Xue Nu’er? What past grievances do they have?”

The person in the temple merely gave a “heh” sound and fell silent.

Seeing Xiang Tianshou dared not respond, Xue Nu’er immediately laughed heartily, pointing at the several men and women and shrieking: “What are you few? Why are you crying and wailing here?”

The woman shouted loudly: “Who are you? How dare you give orders here?”

Xue Nu’er sneered coldly: “Before me, there’s nothing I don’t dare do.”

The woman angrily said: “Bold! Do you know what place this is!” Seeing Xue Nu’er’s arrogant speech, she too became truly angry.

Hearing this, Xue Nu’er suddenly shrieked with laughter like a night owl: “What place is this? Isn’t it just the headquarters of some ‘Mount Nucang’? Nothing but broken copper and rotten iron – a ruin. What’s all the shouting about? Even the headquarters of ‘White Sand Gang’ and ‘Five Poison Gate’ are more impressive than this ghostly place.”

Both “White Sand Gang” and “Five Poison Gate” were third-rate small sects in the martial world. Xue Nu’er’s implication was to extremely despise and belittle Mount Nucang.

Little Rabbit’s face flushed red as he shouted: “You… you… don’t you dare insult our Mount Nucang!”

Xue Nu’er raised his eyebrows and made a sound of surprise: “Your Mount Nucang?” He tilted his head and examined Little Rabbit a few times: “From what you say, you have some connection to Mount Nucang?”

Little Rabbit declared loudly: “That’s right! I was the one who arranged banquets at Mount Nucang in the old days! People call me ‘Little Rabbit’ Ha Bu’er!”

Xue Nu’er laughed so hard he nearly fell over: “From your serious tone, I thought you were some great figure – turns out you’re just a cook. What’s there to boast about?”

Little Rabbit was extremely indignant: “You can look down on me, Ha Bu’er, but you absolutely cannot insult our Mount Nucang!”

Xue Nu’er chuckled: “You keep saying ‘our Mount Nucang’ – so these few are all Mount Nucang people?”

Little Rabbit shouted loudly: “That’s right!” His manner was quite proud, apparently taking great honor in his background.

He was about to continue when the person in the temple said: “Brother Ha, don’t waste words with him. Leave quickly.”

Xue Nu’er gave a cold snort: “Xiang Tianshou, you had courage to rebel in the past – how have you become so timid now? I think Mount Nucang is full of useless trash!”

The turtle-like man jumped up and angrily shouted: “You speak so arrogantly! Today I’ll tell you, you neither-male-nor-female old monster – your father is Mount Nucang’s wine and vinegar supervisor ‘Golden Hair Turtle’ Tao Qing! Remember that well!”

Xue Nu’er made an “Oh” sound and laughed: “It seems your skills at drinking and gambling must be quite impressive. What about that bull-like man?”

Golden Hair Turtle said proudly: “Don’t be frightened when I tell you! My big brother is Mount Nucang’s finest craftsman of weapons and armor – our ‘Iron Bull’ Ouyang Yong! Ouyang Big Brother!” Iron Bull gave a “Wuwa!” roar, quite impressive.

Xue Nu’er couldn’t help but burst out laughing: “A cook, a bartender, an ironsmith – is Mount Nucang left with just you few pieces of trash?”

The woman said coldly: “No matter what your background, since you’ve come to the foot of Mount Nucang, I won’t allow you to insult people like this! Otherwise don’t blame us for being merciless!”

Xue Nu’er’s face flashed with a malicious look as he sneered: “This woman has such big words – what’s her background? Is she a drinking companion or a singing girl from the stronghold?” He then laughed mockingly with extreme contempt.

Little Rabbit rushed forward and shouted: “Don’t talk nonsense! Let me tell you – our Big Sister is none other than the ‘Crimson Qilin’ Yan Er’niang who once guarded the Five Passes! You’d better show some respect!”

Xue Nu’er raised his long eyebrows and made a soft sound of surprise. Mount Nucang once had “Inner Three Halls” and “Outer Five Passes.” The generals guarding the Outer Five Passes were collectively called “Pass-Guarding Young Generals.” This “Crimson Qilin” seemed to have real background, incomparable to the others.

Xue Nu’er nodded: “So you’re one of the ‘Pass-Guarding Young Generals.’ Where are the other brothers? How come I don’t see a single one?” Hearing this, Yan Er’niang’s eyes suddenly reddened. Xue Nu’er laughed heartily: “I suppose they all died in battle, leaving only you few worthless ghosts here to embarrass yourselves!”

Though these words were harsh, Yan Er’niang didn’t get angry upon hearing them. She quietly lowered her head as tears rolled down her face – clearly these words touched her heart. The others also reddened their eyes and all shed tears.

Watching from afar, Qin Zhonghai saw this woman’s heartbroken appearance and remembered her confession that her husband was missing and her brother died in battle. This delicate weak woman must have suffered greatly for twenty years. Qin Zhonghai felt moved and suddenly felt pity.

Seeing the other brothers crying loudly in great sorrow, Yan Er’niang was first to wipe away her tears and recover her heroic spirit, saying sternly: “Don’t be so arrogant! If any of our mountain’s Five Tiger Generals were here, they would certainly cut you in half and show you what’s what!”

Xue Nu’er mocked: “Empty words prove nothing – quickly bring a few to spar with me. Or do you need to summon souls from the underworld and bring their corpses to battle? Ha ha! Ha ha! I can’t kill dead men!”

Yan Er’niang shrieked angrily: “Let me tell you! Even if I, Yan Er’niang, am all alone, I will avenge my brothers! In this life, if I don’t kill all the despicable villains in the court, I won’t close my eyes even in death!”

Xue Nu’er made a sound of surprise: “You want to kill all the despicable villains in the court? From what you say, you defeated remnants still haven’t changed your evil nature and are still opposing the court and rebelling!”

Little Rabbit snorted: “That’s right! Whenever we see corrupt officials, we definitely eliminate them! If we encounter important court figures on tour, we absolutely won’t let them pass!” Qin Zhonghai suddenly understood: “Ah! The assassins who attacked the princess were them!” There were three men and one woman who acted that time – it must be these people.

Hearing this, Xue Nu’er also sensed something strange. His two thin eyebrows slowly rose as he said grimly: “The people who assassinated the princess that day – it was you few ghosts who did it? Yes or no!”

Seeing his sinister expression, Little Rabbit dared not respond for a moment and only looked back at Yan Er’niang. They heard “Crimson Qilin” shout loudly: “That’s right – we were the ones who acted! This thief emperor’s whole family are hypocritical shameless scoundrels whom anyone can kill! I only regret my skills were insufficient and I couldn’t kill that reputation-stealing princess!” She admitted the deed openly – she had thrown her life away.

Hearing this, the person in the temple sighed deeply, seeming to want to advise something but hesitating.

Qin Zhonghai pondered: “Who would have thought it really was these people who assassinated the princess? I wonder what deep grudge they have with the court to harbor such resentment?” Looking at Yan Er’niang and the others, though his heart felt reluctant, he could no longer avoid capturing them.

Xue Nu’er shook his head repeatedly: “You rebels are not only treasonous but also ignorantly laughable. If you want to kill important court figures, why not kill the treacherous minister Jiang Chong? That man is a shameless scoundrel deserving ten thousand deaths – he should have died long ago. Why pick on an unimportant princess? Truly without insight!” His words were righteous and forceful – even Qin Zhonghai secretly nodded upon hearing them. But Xue Nu’er forgot that he too came from the crooked Eastern Depot, whose reputation was no better than Jiang Chong’s – both were great sources of evil in the court. But who likes to admit they’re utterly wicked? People always think they stand on the side of reason and justice, never seeing the monstrous crimes on themselves. Xue Nu’er, this great demon, was no exception.

Yan Er’niang snorted: “Kill first or kill later – it’s all killing. Whether Jiang Chong or the princess, I won’t spare any of them!” These words sounded deeply venomous, making everyone’s hair stand on end.

Xue Nu’er sneered repeatedly, murderous intent already stirring. He originally didn’t plan to fight these people, but since these men and women had attempted to assassinate the princess, they absolutely couldn’t be left alive lest there be endless future trouble. He sneered: “Kill, kill, kill! Dead woman, your own life hangs by a thread – how do you still have the mood to boast? I think you few should attack together to save me the trouble of chasing you one by one – how tiring!”

Yan Er’niang angrily said: “How arrogant!” A white light flashed in her hand as a throwing dart shot toward Xue Nu’er.

Xue Nu’er chuckled: “Just this little thing? Mount Nucang truly has no talent left.” Suddenly azure light flashed and the domineering “Celestial Golden Wheel” flew out. The two hidden weapons met in mid-air – Yan Er’niang’s dart was immediately cut in half and fell to the ground. The golden wheel’s momentum didn’t slow as it flew toward her face. Just as the extremely sharp edge was about to cut her cheek, a small stone flew from the temple, striking the golden wheel and shocking it back. Xue Nu’er caught it as a great force transmitted through, making his chest feel hot as he stepped back.

The man in the temple sighed: “Deputy Director Xue, our Mount Nucang only has these few unsuccessful brothers left. For the sake of my keeping faith for twenty years, please spare them.”

Xue Nu’er said coldly: “You want me to spare them? If these people harass the princess again in the future and those above blame me, who will spare me then?”

The man in the temple gave a long sigh, not knowing how to persuade. Xue Nu’er said: “Originally, seeing your faithful word-keeping, I didn’t want to make things difficult for these youngsters. But they don’t know repentance and still speak such treasonous words – they’re seeking their own death and can’t blame me!”

The man in the temple urgently said: “Er’niang, you’re a woman who cannot fight the court. Swear an oath that you’ll live peacefully from now on and not commit rebellious acts.”

Yan Er’niang angrily said: “You two need not sing this duet! Am I, Yan Er’niang, someone who accepts others’ mercy? Until I kill the treacherous ministers, I cannot be at peace.” Pointing at Xue Nu’er, she challenged: “If you have the guts, come fight to the death – live or die, let’s have a good battle!”

The others’ blood boiled as they drew their weapons and shouted: “Everyone fight to the death! Leave a good name for eternity!”

Xue Nu’er shook his head: “An ignorant bunch who don’t know their limits. Xiang Tianshou, it’s not that I won’t give you face – your brothers seek death blindly and can’t blame me!”

The man in the temple said anxiously: “Er’niang, leave quickly! Xue Nu’er’s methods are vicious – you’re no match for him!”

Yan Er’niang said sternly: “Even if we die here in battle, we don’t want you to collect our bodies. Stay curled up in that ghost temple for the rest of your life!” To Xue Nu’er she said: “Sir, no need to hold back – attack now!”

Xue Nu’er chuckled coldly: “So stupid then, still stupid after twenty years – I wonder what’s in your heads?” His face showed excited expression as he lightly turned the golden wheel in his hand, ready to strike at any moment. Yan Er’niang and the others were determined to die and wouldn’t retreat.

Just as Xue Nu’er was about to act, someone said: “Your Lordship, wait a moment – let me meet them instead?” Everyone looked carefully and saw a person emerge from behind the large rock – it was Qin Zhonghai.

Xue Nu’er spat and cursed: “You want to take advantage?”

Qin Zhonghai shook his head: “Not at all. The princess instructed that these people absolutely cannot be killed – she wants to personally interrogate them. I fear Your Lordship’s martial arts are too formidable and one strike would kill them all. How would we explain to those above?”

Hearing him flatter his abilities, Xue Nu’er felt warm and pleased inside. He laughed shrilly: “Fine! Let your ‘Fire-Greedy Single Blade’ test its power and let this lord open his eyes!”

Actually, Qin Zhonghai couldn’t bear to see these people die at Xue Nu’er’s hands, and the person in the temple was unwilling to come out and rescue them, so he had to personally intervene. He was determined to capture these people – first, seeing their righteousness, he couldn’t bear to kill them and only wanted to preserve their lives for future persuasion to surrender; second, he was quite curious about Mount Nucang and wanted to learn something from these people.

Qin Zhonghai walked into the center and surveyed everyone, cupping his hands: “I am Liaodong Roving General Qin Zhonghai – my respects to all.”

Seeing his heroic bearing and broad shoulders, Yan Er’niang didn’t think he looked like a treacherous villain. Hearing his polite speech, she felt somewhat favorable: “This is none of your business. We only want to meet that dead eunuch – please step aside, General.”

Qin Zhonghai shook his head and drew his blade: “I appreciate the lady’s kindness, but I am a court official with duties to fulfill. I must ask you all to return with me – please show your skills!”

Yan Er’niang snorted: “You want to capture us alive? I’m afraid that won’t be so easy!”

Qin Zhonghai said: “Seeing everyone’s fine martial skills, why do you commit treason and rebellion? I only wish to invite you all back to camp for a discussion – absolutely no intention to harm. If you can agree to surrender to the court in the future, the princess is benevolent and I dare guarantee wealth and position for all – how about it?”

Yan Er’niang was about to respond when Little Rabbit gave a great shout: “Court lackey, shameless and despicable – stop your deception!” He raised a chain spear and attacked Qin Zhonghai’s upper body. “Golden Hair Turtle” beside him was not to be outdone – he shouldered double axes and rolled toward the ground, chopping at Qin Zhonghai’s lower body. These two coordinated their moves perfectly – one attacking high, one striking low, like a well-practiced formation.

Suddenly, a fierce wind swept through as a dragon-like red light flashed. Little Rabbit and Golden Hair Turtle cried out, feeling burning heat on their faces and bodies, followed by a great force striking their weapons. Their bodies moved involuntarily as they rolled away. In an instant, their weapons had already broken, their clothes were scorched black, and they both looked thoroughly disheveled.

Yan Er’niang turned to look and saw Qin Zhonghai holding his steel blade, body bent sideways, his entire form filled with martial energy, motionless.

Yan Er’niang exclaimed in shock: “Is this the ‘Fire-Greedy Single Blade’?” Xue Nu’er was inwardly horrified, thinking: “This man has such domineering martial arts. I had only heard he was good at warfare, but never imagined his personal skills were so refined.”

Qin Zhonghai’s martial arts were quite extraordinary, completely different from the techniques of the Central Plains martial world. His master was a great sword-using master in the martial world who had once dominated the Central Plains for over ten years. But during one encounter, he was beaten so badly he had no power to resist. In his fury, he abandoned the sword for the blade, creating a strange blade technique called “Fire-Greedy Single Blade,” which he passed to Qin Zhonghai.

When Qin Zhonghai was young, he didn’t understand the meaning of “Fire-Greedy Single Blade” and asked his master, receiving this teaching: “Invade and plunder like fire, lick blood to become greedy—why need a second blade to kill?” This showed the domineering nature of this blade technique.

The person in the temple, whose martial arts far exceeded the others, had long seen that Qin Zhonghai’s blade strike was not intended to harm—otherwise his two brothers would already be dead. Feeling grateful, he said: “General, thank you for showing mercy and sparing my two brothers’ lives.”

Qin Zhonghai cupped his hands: “I dare not claim credit. I barely gained a slight advantage through pure luck.”

The person said: “General’s blade technique is outstanding, not like something of this world. Such martial arts aren’t found even in Shaolin or Wudang. May I ask where you learned this?”

Though the person was in a ruined temple, he was so curious about Qin Zhonghai’s martial arts. Seeing this, Xue Nu’er couldn’t help sneering repeatedly: “Xiang Tianshou, you can barely protect yourself—do you still have time to mind others’ business?”

Qin Zhonghai dared not be disrespectful and only cupped his hands: “Senior’s inquiry—I dare not conceal, but my master strictly instructed me never to mention his name to outsiders. Please forgive me.” Actually, Qin Zhonghai’s master had a strange temperament and had long instructed Qin Zhonghai not to reveal his lineage. Now, being in a place of trouble, he was doubly cautious and wouldn’t reveal a single word.

The person in the temple, hearing his tight-lipped response, only made an “Oh” sound, seeming to want to say something. But since Qin Zhonghai was unwilling to speak clearly, he knew further questions would be useless and said no more.

Little Rabbit climbed up from the ground and called to Qin Zhonghai: “Dead dog official! Don’t be so smug! Let me tell you—the victory isn’t decided yet!”

Qin Zhonghai shook his head: “Friend, please don’t make things difficult for yourself. Come back with me!”

Little Rabbit angrily said: “Our Mount Nucang only has brothers who die in battle, not shameless cowards who surrender!” His weapon was broken, so he swung his fists, striking fiercely at Qin Zhonghai.

Qin Zhonghai frowned, thinking: “This rabbit doesn’t know what’s good for him—I must give him some suffering.” He sheathed his steel blade and lightly struck out with a palm. His internal energy enveloped all of Little Rabbit’s vital points. Little Rabbit still struggled desperately, shouting: “I’ll die together with you!” Qin Zhonghai released his palm force. Little Rabbit felt his chest tighten, his feet stumbled, his pressure points were immediately struck, and he fell to the ground.

Golden Hair Turtle shakily stood up and shouted loudly: “Release my brother!” He charged forward. Qin Zhonghai extended his hand in a grappling stance. Golden Hair Turtle, not recognizing the danger, kicked out, but Qin Zhonghai grabbed his ankle and heavily threw his body down, then tapped his toe, striking the pressure point at his waist.

Qin Zhonghai intended to subdue these people without injuring their pride, so he repeatedly cupped his hands: “I yield, I yield! I have absolutely no ill intent—please don’t take offense.”

Xue Nu’er, always sharp-tongued, laughed loudly: “Such formidable martial arts, such pathetic thieves! Ha ha! Ha ha! What a farce!” He laughed aloud with extreme contempt.

Yan Er’niang was both shocked and angry, about to act to save them, when “Iron Bull” Ouyang Yong had already acted first. He gave a great roar and swung his palm with tremendous force, incomparable to Little Rabbit and the others.

Qin Zhonghai had seen this man exchange palms with Lu Yun and knew his strength was extraordinary—he couldn’t fight him head-on. He lightly brushed out with both palms like Wudang Mountain’s “Cotton Palm” technique.

Seeing this move, Xue Nu’er couldn’t help feeling curious, thinking: “What exactly is Qin Zhonghai’s background? How are his martial arts so mixed?” Though he knew Qin Zhonghai, this was the first time seeing him fight. He never expected his martial arts to be so extensive and couldn’t help being curious.

Ouyang Yong’s fan-like large hands struck down, meeting Qin Zhonghai’s palms, but felt his hands were completely empty and powerless. Ouyang Yong was using his fierce strength to fight hard against Qin Zhonghai but couldn’t find a point of resistance. Using too much force, he immediately toppled forward. This was like a strongman using all his strength to lift a light feather—how could he not fall backwards?

This principle was exactly the same as Wudang Mountain’s “overcoming hardness with softness” technique—both used the method of borrowing force to strike back.

Ouyang Yong’s strength went empty and his body fell forward. Seeing the opportunity, Qin Zhonghai quickly reached out and pressed the pressure point on his back. Ouyang Yong gave a “Wuwa!” bull’s roar, unwilling to be captured. Though his body was falling down, he recklessly swung back an elbow, striking fiercely toward Qin Zhonghai’s chest.

Qin Zhonghai thought: “I must quickly capture this man to avoid complications. Otherwise, if that Xue Nu’er intervenes, these people’s lives might not be safe.” Unwilling to delay further, he gathered his energy in his chest and gave a shout, receiving Ouyang Yong’s fierce iron elbow. With a loud “bang,” Qin Zhonghai’s body swayed and his face suddenly flushed red as if blood would drip out. But he was naturally divine in martial prowess—though at a disadvantage now, his fingers didn’t slow but instead pressed harder, instantly striking the pressure point on Ouyang Yong’s back and subduing him.

Qin Zhonghai’s chest felt nauseous with churning blood, unable to speak for a moment. Ouyang Yong’s elbow was indeed fierce, making him feel sick and unable to settle for a long time. Before he could regulate his breathing, he saw Yan Er’niang had already stepped forward, glaring at him fiercely, about to challenge him.

Seeing her eyes full of hatred, Qin Zhonghai smiled bitterly, thinking: “What am I suffering this for? I took this elbow just to save these people’s lives, but not only does no one appreciate it, I’m also hated for it. What a cheap thing to do.”

Xue Nu’er, seeing his face completely red as if he had suffered internal injury, gloated: “That elbow wasn’t light—I wonder if General Qin is still capable? Do you need me to step in and help?”

Fearing that once he acted he would kill Yan Er’niang, Qin Zhonghai shook his head: “Thank you for Deputy Director’s kind intention—I can still manage.”

Suddenly someone leaped down from the mountain hollow, running toward everyone—it was Lu Yun. Earlier, without Qin Zhonghai’s instruction, he had only observed the fight coldly. When he saw Qin Zhonghai’s chest struck and feared the situation was bad, he came to assist.

Lu Yun walked to Qin Zhonghai’s side and said quietly: “General, are you all right? Have you suffered internal injury?” He reached out to grasp Qin Zhonghai’s palm and sent over a gentle internal energy. This internal energy was like winter morning sun or warm spring breeze—warm, refined, tranquil, and pure, instantly relieving the stuffiness in Qin Zhonghai’s chest.

Qin Zhonghai smiled at Lu Yun to show his gratitude, thinking: “Brother Lu is not even thirty, yet his internal energy has reached this level—truly a martial world anomaly. This person’s background is also a mystery.”

Using the internal energy Lu Yun transmitted, he instantly regulated his breathing and the nauseous feeling in his chest greatly reduced. He said: “Brother Lu, please step back.”

Lu Yun said quietly: “General, please be extremely careful.”

Qin Zhonghai nodded and walked into the center, declaring loudly to Yan Er’niang: “Lady hero, your three subordinate brothers have been subdued by me. Please show your skills!”

Lu Yun, deeply fearing Qin Zhonghai was injured, stood guard nearby—if the situation turned bad, he would immediately intervene.

Yan Er’niang looked around. Little Rabbit, Golden Hair Turtle, Ouyang Yong and the others had all been captured and were still writhing on the ground. Xue Nu’er, Qin Zhonghai, and Lu Yun occupied three positions, having surrounded her. Looking carefully at these three men’s footwork and stances, they were all highly skilled martial artists, not ordinary people. The current situation seemed dangerous—she probably couldn’t escape either.

Seeing the critical situation and fearing Yan Er’niang would also be captured, Little Rabbit urgently called: “Sister Yan, quickly leave! Don’t worry about us!” Ouyang Yong also made “Wa wu wu” sounds—though unable to speak, his facial expression was extremely anxious, also hoping Yan Er’niang would escape.

Seeing their appearance, Yan Er’niang’s heart suddenly shook as she remembered past events. She thought sadly: “Twenty years ago it was like this too—everyone told me to leave, but they died one by one… leaving only me in the world to suffer… I… I feel so terrible…” Her thoughts were confused, and thinking of her missing husband, her heart grieved even more. Though three great masters had surrounded her, tears still filled her eyes.

How could Qin Zhonghai know her inner pain? Seeing her standing dazed, he urged: “Please make your move!”

Hearing his low voice, Yan Er’niang was startled and looked up to see Qin Zhonghai holding his blade toward her, seeming puzzled by her distraction. She quickly steadied herself, took a deep breath, and said: “General, sorry to keep you waiting.”

Not wanting to be discourteous, Qin Zhonghai held his blade in a defensive stance and cupped his hand: “Qin respectfully receives the lady hero’s excellent moves.”

Yan Er’niang nodded lightly and took out a throwing dart from her bosom. The dart was narrow, flat, and thin, only as long as a little finger, much lighter and thinner than ordinary daggers. The sharpened edge was snow-bright and sharp, with blue poison coating—clearly an extremely dangerous hidden weapon.

Yan Er’niang raised the throwing dart and suddenly tossed it into the air. Qin Zhonghai was curious, not knowing her intention. He saw Yan Er’niang take out a second dart and also throw it into the air, while her other hand caught the first dart. Like performing magic, she flicked the dart handle and threw it back into the air.

Her hands and feet moved faster and faster as the third and fourth darts were continuously thrown. Her bosom seemed to contain countless darts—truly endless. She threw dart after dart, and in moments over a hundred darts danced up and down in her hands, all flying in the sky. Whenever one dart’s momentum weakened, she would flick it from below and send it flying up again.

In an instant, Yan Er’niang was surrounded by dancing darts—densely packed, countless hundreds like a great swarm of bees flying around her. Her hands moved so fast they could barely be seen.

Xue Nu’er secretly praised: “This ‘Crimson Qilin’ indeed has some skill. Otherwise, when the Pass-Guarding Young Generals each had high martial arts, how could Yan Er’niang, a mere woman, stand as their equal?”

Suddenly they heard Yan Er’niang give a sharp cry: “Watch the dart!” A dart shot rapidly from the center, flying fiercely toward Qin Zhonghai. Seeing the dart was poisoned, Qin Zhonghai dared not be negligent and quickly raised his steel blade to block. With a “clang,” the dart was cut in half.

Yan Er’niang called: “Excellent blade work! Try this move!” Before her words finished, two darts shot wildly out, much faster than before. Before the hidden weapons reached him, Qin Zhonghai focused his eyes to see their path clearly and struck out with his steel blade. The blade flashed and cut down the two attacking darts.

Yan Er’niang wasn’t discouraged and suddenly shot two more. Qin Zhonghai frowned, thinking: “If this continues, who knows how long it will drag on? I should find a way to capture her in one move.”

Seeing the two darts had already flown close, Qin Zhonghai was about to raise his blade to cut them down when he saw a white flash—two more darts shot from behind. These two came from behind but arrived first, actually faster than the front two darts, suddenly flying to Qin Zhonghai’s chest.

Qin Zhonghai was startled—the first two darts were decoys. While the enemy was striking them, the second two came from behind but arrived first. If the enemy didn’t see through this scheme, they would certainly be injured. This “Crimson Qilin’s” hidden weapon technique was mysterious and magical, full of strategy—truly a first-class expert. Qin Zhonghai dared not be careless and whirled his steel blade so densely that water couldn’t penetrate. After several continuous light sounds, he finally blocked the four darts attacking front and back.

Yan Er’niang praised: “What a roving general—you actually blocked my ‘Four Clever Swallows’!” She waved her delicate hand and called: “See how you break my ‘Seven Stars Gathering’!” Seven darts like lightning shot toward Qin Zhonghai with incomparable speed.

Qin Zhonghai carefully watched the seven darts’ paths—they were divided into two front and five back, attacking his upper, middle, and lower routes. He was greatly alarmed. If he blocked the front two darts, the back five would take advantage of the gap. He really didn’t know how to defend. In panic, he quickly removed his helmet and threw it forcefully at the darts. After several “clang” sounds, he blocked four of them, but three still flew toward him. Qin Zhonghai swung his blade and knocked down two more, but the last dart had already reached his eyes—truly impossible to block. Qin Zhonghai quickly rolled to the ground, narrowly dodging the last pursuing dart, which embedded itself beside his cheek—extremely dangerous.

Seeing his embarrassment, Yan Er’niang didn’t pursue, saying: “General, be careful—after my ‘Seven Stars Gathering’ come the ‘Thirteen Guardians’ and ‘Eighteen Arhats’ moves. Are you ready?”

Yan Er’niang’s martial arts were entirely in hidden weapons. She had mastered dart throwing and once used one move called “Thirteen Guardians” to defeat martial world experts—extremely formidable. Seeing seven darts were already hard to block, if thirteen or eighteen came together, how could they be defended against? Hearing her words, Qin Zhonghai only gave a dry chuckle, his expression quite ugly.

Xue Nu’er laughed heartily: “Last time you threw out a helmet—this time you’ll probably have to use shoes, socks, and pants too.”

Seeing his gloating, Lu Yun was angry and glared at Xue Nu’er.

Seeing Lu Yun’s fury, Xue Nu’er spread his hands and laughed: “This lord didn’t say anything wrong! Looking ugly is better than being killed. Better to live wretchedly than die well, right?”

Qin Zhonghai’s face was grave, knowing the opponent’s hidden weapons were truly formidable. Standing at a distance, he could only take beatings without fighting back. He thought: “This is a certain defeat. I need to get within three feet of her to have a chance of victory.” He gave a great roar and suddenly ran toward Yan Er’niang’s front—changing from defense to offense, this was a desperate move with nine chances of death to one of life.

Yan Er’niang shook her head: “It’s useless.” A white flash followed as ten darts shot simultaneously. The hidden weapons’ paths already covered Qin Zhonghai’s surroundings—apparently nowhere to hide. Qin Zhonghai gave a tiger’s roar and leaped up—the ten darts flew under his feet. But Yan Er’niang had already calculated his evasion route. She sent out with both hands, and three more darts shot out. These three came from behind but arrived first, shooting fiercely toward Qin Zhonghai’s upper, middle, and lower routes—this was the so-called “Thirteen Guardians.”

Qin Zhonghai was in mid-air and couldn’t dodge. He could only draw his blade and after two “clang” sounds, had already blocked two darts consecutively. But the last one came too fast, shooting straight at his throat. Greatly alarmed, he quickly lowered his head and suddenly opened his mouth to bite, actually catching the dart in his teeth. The fierce force transmitted through, shocking his teeth until they ached.

Lu Yun nearby, seeing this risky move, couldn’t help crying out in alarm. Xue Nu’er laughed: “What a move—’dog bites Lu Dongbin’! General Qin is truly brilliant!” Lu Yun was furious and shouted: “How can you be so boring? We’re all working for the princess and are colleagues—yet you mock people like this!”

Xue Nu’er knew he was in the wrong and didn’t want to respond, just kept smiling as he watched Qin Zhonghai.

Qin Zhonghai spat out the steel dart, his face pale, not knowing whether to advance and attack. But Yan Er’niang wouldn’t let him catch his breath. She waved both hands repeatedly: “Be careful—the Eighteen Arhats are coming!” Eighteen darts shot out. Qin Zhonghai focused his eyes and saw the darts coming extremely fast. He was about to raise his blade to block when the dozen or so darts went crooked and actually fell toward the ground with poor accuracy, only landing around Qin Zhonghai’s left and right.

Qin Zhonghai was puzzled, not knowing what scheme Yan Er’niang had. Suddenly he saw the dozen darts hit the scattered stones on the ground and all bounced up, shooting fiercely toward his body. In an instant, front and back, left and right—all directions were filled with hidden weapons.

This move had already calculated the terrain around Qin Zhonghai, using the darts’ bouncing force off the ground to attack the enemy—quite unexpected in its power. Seeing nowhere to dodge or block, Qin Zhonghai thought: “I can’t help it—if I don’t use my ultimate technique to save my life, how will I manage?”

Instantly giving a great roar, he wildly swung his blade as a fire dragon rushed past. Everyone’s eyes brightened as they saw Qin Zhonghai’s blade ignite with roaring flames burning in mid-air—the dozen darts had already fallen to the ground.

Yan Er’niang was startled and called: “What evil martial art is this?”

Qin Zhonghai raised his steel blade: “This move is called ‘Greedy Fire Galloping’—a secret technique taught by my master, reaching the seventh level of Fire-Greedy Blade power.” As soon as he finished speaking, he shouted: “Be careful!” and immediately ran straight toward Yan Er’niang.

Seeing him raise his steel blade with a fierce expression, Yan Er’niang couldn’t help being secretly alarmed. She gestured with both hands, and the countless darts around her suddenly turned, all shooting toward Qin Zhonghai. Yan Er’niang called: “This move is called ‘Ten Thousand Horses Galloping’—see how you receive it!” The steel darts flew like a swarm of bees, densely packed and frightening. Combined with the sudden occurrence at close distance, how could Qin Zhonghai defend?

Lu Yun shouted: “General Qin! Quickly retreat!” His voice was panicked, fearing Qin Zhonghai couldn’t save himself. Xue Nu’er covered his mouth and secretly laughed—he had no good feelings toward Qin Zhonghai. If this person died, though it would be somewhat inconvenient for the diplomatic mission, seeing him killed and nailed to the ground by chaotic darts would still be quite satisfying.

As ten thousand darts flew, seeing Qin Zhonghai about to die horribly, Lu Yun shouted loudly: “Quickly dodge!” He was about to leap out to help, but it was already too late—countless darts had shot toward Qin Zhonghai.

Suddenly a blazing fire ignited as Qin Zhonghai actually shot skyward like a great spinning top. His whole body spun continuously, the steel blade’s red flames immediately enveloping his entire body—the momentum was quite alarming. The countless darts, blown by this fierce wind, immediately scattered outward.

Qin Zhonghai roared repeatedly like a great fire dragon pouncing toward Yan Er’niang. Yan Er’niang’s face changed color as she cried in alarm: “What… what martial art is this?” Qin Zhonghai’s technique was already unleashed—unable to speak, his blade edge chopped fiercely toward Yan Er’niang’s head. Yan Er’niang was so frightened her face lost all color. She closed her eyes tightly and screamed.

Little Rabbit and the others nearby all cried out but couldn’t save Yan Er’niang. Lu Yun clenched his fists, his palms sweating, fearing this blade would really chop down and split Yan Er’niang’s delicate body in half.

Everyone was in panic, but only Xue Nu’er wore a cold smile while the person in the temple remained quietly silent. These two, with high martial arts and extensive knowledge, seemed to know Qin Zhonghai’s blade had no intention to harm, so they just watched with folded arms without making a sound.

Indeed, Qin Zhonghai was unwilling to kill. He gave a sharp shout, using his powerful wrist strength to withdraw the blade momentum. He held the blade at Yan Er’niang’s neck: “Lady hero has already lost—come with me now!”

Yan Er’niang opened her eyes, her face pale, and didn’t respond.

Qin Zhonghai knew she must be too proud to admit defeat and said: “Lady, you didn’t lose because your martial arts were inferior, but because your luck was inferior. My previous move was the eighth level of ‘Fire-Greedy Single Blade’ called ‘Dragon Fire Devours Heaven.’ Actually, I haven’t mastered it yet—just now in desperation I made a desperate attempt and accidentally succeeded. Pure luck.” These words gave Yan Er’niang full face, but she still kept her cherry lips tightly closed, her phoenix eyes full of tears, looking very sorrowful.

Qin Zhonghai said: “Please accompany me, lady hero. Her Highness the Princess is still waiting to question you.” He then said to Little Rabbit and the others: “Don’t worry—as long as you can be loyal to the country and promise not to rebel again, Her Highness the Princess is merciful and kind and will not punish you severely. If you serve the court in the future and redeem yourselves through merit, wouldn’t that be a wonderful thing?” He then said to Yan Er’niang: “Let’s go!” He sheathed his steel blade and moved it away from Yan Er’niang’s neck.

Suddenly they saw tears falling from Yan Er’niang’s eyes as she gritted her teeth and said: “With no hope of revenge in this life, why should I continue living in this world?” She suddenly crashed toward the blade edge—intending to kill herself on the spot!

Qin Zhonghai was greatly alarmed: “Absolutely not!” But Yan Er’niang was determined to die, and this collision was extremely fierce and urgent. Qin Zhonghai quickly leaped backward, calling: “Life is precious—think carefully!” Yan Er’niang missed and fell to the ground. Little Rabbit and the others cried loudly: “Sister, don’t do anything foolish!” Seeing her lying alone on the ground, Qin Zhonghai was about to reach out to help her when suddenly Yan Er’niang leaped up and ran toward the mountain peak.

Fearing she would escape, Qin Zhonghai quickly said: “Brother Lu, first escort these people back—I’ll chase down this woman.” Xue Nu’er chuckled: “No need for such trouble!” His hand flashed with golden light as the “Celestial Flying Wheel” shot out toward Yan Er’niang’s back. Qin Zhonghai raised his blade to deflect the golden wheel, shouting: “Don’t interfere—I want to capture this woman alive!” Xue Nu’er’s internal energy had unique secrets—with just this deflection, Qin Zhonghai’s right arm was already numb and powerless.

Xue Nu’er raised his hand to retrieve the golden wheel and laughed shrilly: “Qin Zhonghai, have you taken a fancy to this widow?” Qin Zhonghai spat: “I’ll settle this account with you later!” Though he spoke, his feet didn’t stop, and in an instant he had already run over ten zhang.

Lu Yun gave a clear whistle to signal the soldiers above. Soon over ten soldiers hurried down to escort Ouyang Yong, Little Rabbit, and the others back. Xue Nu’er called to the ruined temple: “Xiang Tianshou, I’m taking your friends back! In the future, you can hide well in there and be safe until you die of old age. Did you hear?” The person in the temple heard his words but remained silent, seeming unconcerned.

Little Rabbit cursed: “Surnamed Xiang! You despicable, shameless thing—even more contemptible than treacherous ministers and eunuchs! You watch your brothers being captured with your own eyes without even trying to save them—are you still human?” Golden Hair Turtle said coldly: “No need to waste words with such a person. He’s been hiding in that ghost temple for years and has long gone mad. In the future, when he dies alone inside, there won’t even be anyone to collect his body—probably a hundred times more miserable than us.” Hearing this mockery, the person still remained silent—no sound came out for a long time.

Xue Nu’er laughed: “Let’s go! What are we still doing here?” He pushed Little Rabbit, who shouted loudly: “Surnamed Xiang, if you won’t save us, at least go save Sister Yan!” Everyone pulled and dragged, their voices gradually fading as they went far away.

Now, Qin Zhonghai raced up the mountain but couldn’t see any trace of Yan Er’niang. He searched carefully all the way. When he reached the mountainside, the weather was much colder than on the ground, with snowflakes falling piece by piece from the sky. The mountain snow accumulated several feet deep. He searched everywhere for suspicious traces when suddenly he saw faint footprints on the ground. Greatly pleased, he followed the footprints up the mountain.

This mountain peak was both high and steep. By the time he had walked this far, it was already evening. Qin Zhonghai used his lightness skill to walk lightly on the snow to prevent his feet from sinking deeply into the accumulated snow.

After walking a bit more, he had climbed to the mountaintop. But the weather was changeable, and a great fog arose on the peak—white and vast, making the path unclear. Qin Zhonghai stepped forward and suddenly kicked a pillar. Looking up, he suddenly saw a large wooden archway before him, but it was already in ruins. The left side of the archway had collapsed, and the foundation was also rotten and broken—it looked ready to collapse at any moment.

Qin Zhonghai shook his head and was about to walk forward when he suddenly saw a huge plaque on the ground. He quickly bent down to look, brushed away the thick snow on top, and read from left to right—he saw three vermillion characters: “Mount Nucang.”

Qin Zhonghai’s heart chilled as he realized he had climbed to the top of Mount Nucang.

He thought: “I wonder what Yan Er’niang is doing in these ruins? Could she have helpers lying in ambush here?” He gripped his steel blade, always ready to guard against sneak attacks.

He walked forward—everything was white and misty with heavy snow, and he really couldn’t see any human figures. Soon his body was also covered with a thick layer. He thought: “This snow is falling so fiercely that it will be very difficult to find Yan Er’niang today. Better to send troops to search the mountain another day—it will be much more convenient then.” Just as he was thinking of retreating down the mountain, he suddenly saw a tall pavilion. In the heavy snow, he couldn’t make out its appearance clearly. Qin Zhonghai was pleased: “This saves a lot of trouble—Yan Er’niang must be hiding inside. Let me go take a look.” He quickened his pace and rushed into the pavilion.

As soon as he entered, he saw the main door had already collapsed, leaving only a large empty hole at the entrance—the door boards had disappeared somewhere. Qin Zhonghai called loudly: “Lady Hero Yan, stop hiding and come back with me!” After shouting for a while, it remained completely quiet inside with no response. Qin Zhonghai sighed, found several wooden sticks to light as torches, and walked deeper inside.

Crossing the inner door, he saw before him an enormous deep hall. This hall was spacious and far-reaching with high beams and wide pillars, comparable to the Wenhua Hall in the Forbidden City—presumably where Mount Nucang’s leaders held their councils.

Qin Zhonghai looked around and, thinking of the many legends about this place, pondered: “According to martial world people, over twenty years ago this place gathered thirty thousand troops and fought several magnificent battles against the court. Though they were all rebels, they could still be called outstanding figures of their time. Today I should properly pay my respects.” Qin Zhonghai walked into the hall and saw a high platform in the inner chamber. Below the platform were five stone-carved tigers arranged in a square, with very fine craftsmanship and half a person’s height—but the middle one had its head knocked off. After looking for a while and unable to figure out anything, Qin Zhonghai leaped up onto the platform. Suddenly the floor gave way—the platform had been stepped through by him, and he nearly fell, showing that this place had long been in disrepair and extremely dilapidated.

Qin Zhonghai sighed and thought: “Rotted to this state—truly the shortness of heroic spirit.” He shook his head and raised his torch to see a plaque hanging high in the hall. Fortunately it hadn’t rotted yet. He focused his gaze and saw the three characters “Loyalty and Righteousness Hall.”

Qin Zhonghai thought: “Loyalty and Righteousness Hall? Did these bandits also understand loyalty and righteousness?” He looked down and saw a stone chair placed below the plaque, with two smaller wooden chairs on either side. The way these three seats were arranged, those who sat here in the past must have been Mount Nucang’s most important figures. But all three chairs were already rotten and broken—it seemed they would crumble and collapse with just a touch. Qin Zhonghai thought: “This central seat must have been where Mount Nucang’s leader sat. The chairs on either side should have been for two assistant military advisors, like left and right chancellors. The hero who founded Mount Nucang must have been a learned scholar—I wonder why he rebelled?” He raised his torch and slowly approached, suddenly seeing characters carved on all three chairs. Qin Zhonghai was pleased and quickly looked closer. He saw two lines carved on the central chair: “Departing east from White Emperor for thirty thousand li, the first man to exit west of Liangshan.” The chairs on either side also had characters carved behind them—one was carved with “Left Dragon,” the other “Right Phoenix.” Qin Zhonghai sneered: “Such big words—Left Dragon and Right Phoenix. Didn’t this leader become an emperor?”

He jumped down from the platform and carefully walked around the perimeter but saw nothing unusual. Standing beside the stone tigers, he was lost in thought and casually placed his palm on the stone tiger’s head, patting it gently.

Looking at the scene of defeat and desolation before him, Qin Zhonghai thought: “They all say Mount Nucang was so powerful in the past, once beating the court bloody. Who knew it would be ruined to this state today? It seems the legends were too exaggerated—seeing is believing.” Today, seeing Mount Nucang’s former members were all people like Little Rabbit and Golden Hair Turtle—not remarkable heroes—he felt the legends were somewhat exaggerated. Seeing Mount Nucang’s main hall in ruins further reinforced his sense of heroic decline.

As he was thinking, his fingers lightly touched the stone tiger’s forehead and suddenly felt characters carved there. He quickly raised the fire to look and saw a “South” character carved on the tiger’s head. Looking carefully, he saw another line on the tiger’s back: “Cavalry Five Tiger General Iron Sword Shaking the South Li Tieshan.”

Qin Zhonghai was curious and muttered to himself: “Li Tieshan? Is this the person who stood up for Dingyuan? How is this person also a former Mount Nucang member?” This Li Tieshan had used an iron sword to fight many heroes, earning the title “Iron Sword Shaking the South.” A year ago he had stood up for Wu Dingyuan in a great battle against Zhuo Lingzhao and others—but it turned out he was a Mount Nucang general. This was truly unexpected.

Seeing four other stone tigers remaining, Qin Zhonghai was very curious and wanted to see what other heroes Mount Nucang had who once gathered here to discuss their life’s righteousness.

He raised his torch and turned to another stone tiger. Approaching the tiger’s body to look closely, he suddenly saw the tiger’s head had a “West” character, then read: “Cavalry Five Tiger General Yingzhou Commander West Liang Little Lu Bu Han Yi.” Qin Zhonghai was greatly shocked: “Yingzhou Commander? How is this person still a court official?” This Han Yi held the title of Yingzhou Supreme Commander—he should be a court general. How did he go up the mountain to rebel? It was truly incomprehensible. But seeing this person listed as one of the Five Tigers, his martial arts were definitely not inferior to Li Tieshan’s—he must also be an outstanding figure.

Looking at another stone tiger, he focused his gaze and saw the tiger’s head carved with an “East” character, with “Cavalry Five Tiger General Navy Chief Instructor Jiangdong Sail Shadow Lu Guzhan” carved on the tiger’s back. He didn’t recognize this person and didn’t know his background or martial arts level, so he shook his head and looked at the next one.

This one had a “North” character carved on its head, with “Cavalry Five Tiger General Spirit Rushing Fortress North Shi Gang” on its back. Qin Zhonghai didn’t know this person either. He sighed and thought: “I think these people have long since disappeared or are already dead—I wonder how many besides Li Tieshan are still alive?” He had now seen the stone tigers of the four directions—east, west, south, north—with only the headless tiger in the center remaining unseen. He bent down to examine it carefully.

Qin Zhonghai looked closely and saw the characters on the stone tiger’s back had been scraped off by a sharp blade—the cut was extremely smooth and neat. This stone tiger was made of very hard material—the person who did this either used a precious sword or precious blade, or was a master of extraordinary martial arts. But why did they want to conceal the characters on the stone tiger? Could it be they feared the authorities would know their identity? Or did they have a grudge against Mount Nucang? He thought for a moment but couldn’t figure it out, so he turned to leave the hall. As he was walking, he suddenly heard a light sound coming from far outside the hall. Qin Zhonghai was startled: “Trouble! If bandits are hiding here and we fight, with the enemy outnumbering me, that would be very bad.” He quickly bent low, lightened his footsteps, and slowly walked out of the hall.

As soon as he left the hall, he was shocked to see a person hanging from a tree with both feet dangling in the air! Qin Zhonghai’s heart jumped in alarm as he quickly ran to the tree. He saw a woman with her tongue hanging out, eyes tightly closed, with a rope around her neck—she had hanged herself here. Qin Zhonghai leaped up and cut the rope with his blade, rescuing the woman. By the firelight, he saw this woman was quite beautiful, about thirty years old—wasn’t this “Crimson Qilin” Yan Er’niang? Qin Zhonghai was greatly shocked. Even if Yan Er’niang had set an ambush here to plot against him or gathered masters to help fight, he wouldn’t be surprised—but who knew she had desperately escaped up the mountain only to hang herself here? Wasn’t this absurdly ridiculous? Seeing Yan Er’niang motionless for a long time, he quickly felt her pulse—her wrist was ice-cold and stiff. She had been dead for quite some time. Qin Zhonghai sat down dejectedly, suddenly feeling melancholy. Originally seeing this woman’s heroic and refreshing manner, he had quite wanted to befriend her—who knew she would die like this.

Looking at her pale face, Qin Zhonghai again felt pity. He sighed and suddenly shouted loudly: “No! I absolutely cannot let her die like this! Even if it’s a dead horse, your grandfather will treat it as a living horse!” He immediately disregarded male-female proprieties and placed his hand on her chest, inputting internal energy into her body. This method of using internal energy to directly stimulate the heart pulse was taught by Qin Zhonghai’s master. Qin Zhonghai had never used it before, but in this critical situation, he could only try rashly.

After a moment, the woman still didn’t move at all. Qin Zhonghai was greatly anxious, knowing that if he delayed another moment, Yan Er’niang would definitely be beyond saving—even if revived, she would become an idiot. He raised his blade handle and summoned the fierce strength of “Fire-Greedy Single Blade,” suddenly stabbing down at her chest. With a “crack,” Yan Er’niang’s chest ribs had already broken, but she still didn’t move at all.

Qin Zhonghai urgently said: “I have no choice but to take liberties!” He removed Yan Er’niang’s upper garments, exposing her naked chest. Suddenly there was a clinking sound from the ground—Yan Er’niang’s throwing darts had fallen from her bosom. Dozens of darts scattered on the ground—with the darts present but the person dead, it was indescribably desolate.

Qin Zhonghai thought: “If I can’t revive her this time, even the Great Immortal Luo couldn’t do anything. Sigh! I can only gamble!” He carefully felt for the position of Yan Er’niang’s heart and struck down again with the blade handle. This time the force was much gentler. Yan Er’niang’s upper body shook and her hands and feet moved slightly. Qin Zhonghai was overjoyed and quickly sat cross-legged in front of her, grasping her palms with both hands and continuously inputting internal energy. After half an hour, Yan Er’niang’s face changed from white to red and she slowly began breathing. Qin Zhonghai dared not be negligent and exerted himself with full force—wisps of white smoke emerged from his head.

Heavy snow continued falling on both of them, but driven by Qin Zhonghai’s fierce hot energy, it all turned into streams of water vapor surrounding them.

After another half hour, Yan Er’niang gave a soft moan and opened her eyes.

Qin Zhonghai was overjoyed: “Alive! Alive!” Yan Er’niang didn’t know where she was and looked at Qin Zhonghai with misty phoenix eyes: “Where is this? Is this the underworld?” Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “Yes! I’m the ox-headed horse-faced demon who specializes in ladling medicinal soup—Granny Meng!” Yan Er’niang gradually awakened and suddenly felt cold on her body. Looking down, she saw her chest garments had been removed. Both ashamed and anxious, she immediately slapped Qin Zhonghai across the face.

Qin Zhonghai quickly dodged and shouted: “Your body is still weak—don’t move!” Yan Er’niang covered her clothes and called: “You… you lewd scoundrel actually molested me while I was unconscious… I… I’ll fight you to the death!” She pounced forward to snatch the steel blade at Qin Zhonghai’s feet.

Qin Zhonghai leaped backward and shouted: “Don’t wrongly accuse a good person! Seeing your life hanging by a thread, I acted to save you. Don’t repay kindness with enmity!” As Yan Er’niang moved, her chest ribs suddenly hurt severely. She lay sideways and slowly fell backward facing the sky.

Qin Zhonghai quickly said: “How do you feel now? Does your chest hurt severely?” He had struck too hard earlier and actually broke Yan Er’niang’s ribs—he felt very sorry and wanted to come forward to examine her.

Seeing him approach, Yan Er’niang screamed: “Go away! Don’t look at me!” Qin Zhonghai said anxiously: “If I don’t look, how can I set bones and treat you?” Yan Er’niang knew he spoke the truth, but her upper body was naked—her chest as tender as white snow had been seen by an outsider. Suddenly her heart filled with grief and she couldn’t help crying loudly: “Don’t worry about me—let me die!” Qin Zhonghai sighed and walked forward to crouch beside Yan Er’niang.

Both ashamed and anxious, Yan Er’niang said in alarm: “Don’t touch me with your dirty claws! I’m a married woman—you absolutely cannot come near me!” Qin Zhonghai sighed: “Ah… damn it, ‘when sister-in-law is drowning, rescue with your hand’—if I’m this pedantic, you’ll freeze to death here tonight or die from pain.” Yan Er’niang wept: “I’m a woman with a husband—my whole body from head to toe belongs to him. I absolutely won’t allow another man to see even a glance. If you insult me, I can only die for you to see!” Seeing the snow getting heavier, Qin Zhonghai quickly said: “I only want to save you—I have absolutely no evil intentions. Don’t be suspicious.” He reached out to embrace her, wanting to set her broken chest bones.

Both ashamed and frightened, Yan Er’niang suddenly gave a great cry and screamed piercingly—the scream shook the mountain peaks and carried for several li.

Qin Zhonghai became angry and embarrassed. He stood up with a “heh” and shouted loudly: “You woman are so unreasonable! I, Qin Zhonghai, have traveled through the three mountains and five peaks—who doesn’t consider me a good man? Only you, this woman, insist on thinking I’m a lewd scoundrel doing those filthy things here! Die then—I’m leaving!” His temper flared as he strode away, thinking: “This woman is so troublesome—one moment wanting to die, the next wanting to live, and she even takes me for a low-class villain. Damn it, doing good for nothing.” He walked quickly away but didn’t hear the woman’s voice for a long time—presumably she was too stubborn and proud to plead. His heart was hard and he paid no attention, walking away on his own.

But after walking a few more steps, he suddenly heard the woman crying sadly and mournfully. The crying was very low, as if muffled by something—presumably this woman was too proud to let Qin Zhonghai hear her weeping and must be covering her crying with her palms.

After listening for a while, Qin Zhonghai remembered the woman’s weakness and pity—for twenty years she had to bear the burden of blood vengeance, which was truly pitiable and sympathetic. He sighed, bent down to pick up several straight tree branches to set her bones later, then turned back.

Yan Er’niang was crying incessantly when she suddenly saw Qin Zhonghai return and shouted loudly: “What are you coming back for! Get away from me!” Tears still hung on her face in a pitiful appearance, but her words were still fierce and shrewish.

Qin Zhonghai said nothing more and with one swift step leaped forward, his hands moving like flying fingers, instantly sealing her pressure points. Yan Er’niang couldn’t move but could still speak. She screamed loudly: “Rape! Rape!” Qin Zhonghai said coldly: “If you say another word, I’ll cut you down with one blade!” Yan Er’niang angrily said: “Cut if you want—am I afraid of you?” Qin Zhonghai gave a “heh” sound, embraced her waist, placed her on his lap, then reached out to straighten her ribs.

With her soft chest being touched, Yan Er’niang was both ashamed and angry, wanting to resist, but with her pressure points sealed, she helplessly couldn’t move and could only let others take liberties. Tears streamed down her face as she cried: “Wu wu… Surnamed Qin… after my injury heals, I’ll definitely kill you…” Qin Zhonghai angrily shouted: “If you want your injury to heal, be quiet now and don’t make noise!” Yan Er’niang’s shame was momentarily unbearable and she immediately fainted.

When she awoke, she found herself lying in the Loyalty and Righteousness Hall, the pain in her body much reduced—presumably Qin Zhonghai had sealed her pressure points to stop the pain. She raised her head and neck to see Qin Zhonghai with his back to her, making a fire and roasting meat.

Waves of fragrant aroma drifted over. Yan Er’niang felt extremely hungry but was unwilling to ask for food. Thinking of how this man had been improper with her, her heart filled with even greater hatred. She quietly took out a throwing dart and shot it fiercely toward Qin Zhonghai’s back.

Suddenly they heard Qin Zhonghai say: “Since you’re awake, eat something to save your strength for recovery.” He shifted his body and the dart shot into the fire pit. Seeing he had seen through her scheme, Yan Er’niang only snorted, not knowing what to say.

Qin Zhonghai stood up, holding the roasted rabbit meat, and walked toward Yan Er’niang: “Eat it while it’s hot—the taste isn’t bad.”

Yan Er’niang was both extremely hungry and helpless against Qin Zhonghai. She glared at him viciously, took the rabbit meat, and with each bite glared once more, wishing she could cut him into a thousand pieces.

Qin Zhonghai crouched beside her, watching her finish the roasted meat: “Seeing your good appetite, you should recover soon.” Seeing the snow outside the hall had lessened, he stood up: “I’m leaving now—Her Highness the Princess is still waiting for me to return and guard her!”

Originally, Qin Zhonghai had pursued Yan Er’niang all the way just wanting to bring her back to camp. But seeing her strong character and tragic background, if he really captured and brought her back, he would inevitably force her to death. So he decided to let her go.

Yan Er’niang snorted hatefully: “Court lackey, despicable and shameless!” Qin Zhonghai ignored her and dragged over several rabbits—all hunted earlier—saying: “You’re injured and can’t move now. These rabbits are enough for you to eat for several days.” He walked toward the hall door to leave. At this time, Qin Zhonghai had been away from the army for half a day and was quite worried, wanting to return to camp early to avoid accidents.

Looking at his retreating figure, Yan Er’niang suddenly felt an inexplicable melancholy, but immediately thinking of her captured brothers, she shrieked: “Qin Zhonghai!” Qin Zhonghai was still outside the door. Hearing her call, he didn’t re-enter but only stood outside: “What are your orders, lady?”

Yan Er’niang shouted: “Release my brothers! Otherwise I’ll never let this end!”

Qin Zhonghai knew these people hated the court. If he couldn’t subdue them, there would surely be future troubles. Yan Er’niang was injured and couldn’t move, so he could only let her go. But having captured the others with such difficulty, how could he casually release them? He shook his head: “I’m afraid I cannot comply with this request.”

Yan Er’niang was at her wit’s end. With her serious injuries, she could barely move a step, let alone rescue anyone. Seeing Qin Zhonghai had been quite considerate to her, she suddenly wanted to plead with him, but her stubborn heart quickly suppressed this thought. She said sternly: “Surnamed Qin, do you only care about promotion and wealth? Must you send my brothers to the authorities to be executed before you’re satisfied? You despicable, shameless villain!” Hearing this, Qin Zhonghai knew she was worried about her brothers and couldn’t help sighing. He walked back from outside the door.

Seeing him return, Yan Er’niang felt inexplicably pleased. Qin Zhonghai sat directly beside her: “When I advised you to surrender to the court during the day, that was sincere—why must you keep people at arm’s length?”

Yan Er’niang spat toward Qin Zhonghai’s face. Qin Zhonghai leaned aside to avoid it and sighed softly: “What great hatred do you have that you must rebel against the court like this? If you would surrender to our dynasty, I could recommend to our superior Marquis Liu that you all be given important positions. Then you and I would serve the court together for the country—wouldn’t that be joyful? Why must you wander the martial world like this, living days without seeing sunlight?”

Yan Er’niang turned to look at him. In the firelight, she saw Qin Zhonghai looking at her with sincere emotion. Her heart suddenly ached as she covered her face and began sobbing. Seeing her angry one moment and crying the next, Qin Zhonghai didn’t know how to console her and thought: “There are so many crazy women these days—I must be doubly careful.” He coughed and said nothing, letting her cry.

Yan Er’niang wept: “It’s too late… everything is too late…” Qin Zhonghai asked curiously: “Too late? What’s too late? Did you eat dinner too late? Speak clearly!”

Yan Er’niang shook her head sadly: “You’re saying all this too late… My dear brother was killed by the authorities, my husband was struck heavily on the forehead and has been missing for twenty years. Tell me… how can I… how can I surrender to the court? If I really shamelessly surrender, how can I face them after death?”

Qin Zhonghai was startled: “Were these two relatives of yours also Mount Nucang people?”

Yan Er’niang wiped away her tears and said proudly: “That’s right! My husband is none other than the former ‘West Liang Little Lu Bu.'”

Qin Zhonghai had just seen this person’s name and knew he was one of the “Cavalry Five Tiger Generals.” Looking closely, he saw Yan Er’niang’s face full of longing and love—clearly thinking fondly of her husband. His heart suddenly felt strange, and he quickly coughed and asked: “Could your husband be the one titled Yingzhou Commander, named Han Yi?”

Yan Er’niang said happily: “You know him too?” Qin Zhonghai nodded: “I saw his name in the hall earlier.”

Yan Er’niang said dreamily: “My husband was divinely martial and handsome, with incredibly high martial arts—probably even better than yours. When I married him, I was only fifteen. At that time, we entered the mountain together…” She was about to ramble on when Qin Zhonghai quickly interrupted: “You also mentioned your elder brother earlier—who is he?”

Hearing this question, Yan Er’niang wanted to sit up, but with her broken ribs, she couldn’t move. Qin Zhonghai reached out and embraced her waist, gently helping her up. This Qin Zhonghai was a broad-minded and generous person, unlike Lu Yun’s rigid stubbornness. He didn’t take male-female proprieties seriously and thus had fewer boring concerns.

Being held in his arms, Yan Er’niang paid no attention to these details. Her face flushed as she said: “My elder brother Yan Zhenwu, nicknamed ‘Crimson Blood Qilin,’ ranked among the ‘Five Pass Young Generals.’ In the old days, we siblings guarded Yunlong Pass and Yide Pass respectively—we were so majestic!” She recalled past events with longing.

Qin Zhonghai asked: “Why did the court kill your brother? And why did they injure your husband?”

Yan Er’niang’s grief welled up and she cried again. Qin Zhonghai smiled bitterly, thinking: “Here I am listening to a crazy woman’s ghost cries in this freezing cold mountain—I must never gamble these next few days or I’ll definitely lose my pants.”

How could Qin Zhonghai know that for over ten years, Yan Er’niang had lived in seclusion, always wearing a cold, stern big sister facade, never revealing her heart to outsiders? Even Little Rabbit and those brothers had never heard her story. Who knew that in the deep of night when alone, she always wept and soaked her pillow with tears? Now Qin Zhonghai asking her so sincerely was actually the first time in twenty years she had discussed past tragedies—how could she not cry?

The more Yan Er’niang cried, the more it affected her chest injury, causing her to moan. Qin Zhonghai shook his head with a “heh”: “Stop crying—if you cry more, you might cry your bones apart!” Yan Er’niang scolded: “People only cry themselves blind—who ever cried their bones apart?”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “You’d probably be the first!” Yan Er’niang scolded: “Glib tongue!” For a moment, busy with anger, she forgot her sorrow. Looking at her charming face, Qin Zhonghai thought: “Such a beauty should cry less—otherwise becoming ugly would be a waste.” His heart teased and his mouth curved in a slight smile.

Seeing him smiling, Yan Er’niang knew it couldn’t be good and angrily said: “What are you smiling about?”

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “I smile that you’re born beautiful with strong martial arts, yet you love to cry so much.” Hearing him praise her beauty, Yan Er’niang was greatly embarrassed and quickly lowered her head. After a moment, tears again glimmered in her eyes as if she would cry.

Seeing this, Qin Zhonghai thought: “This woman has an externally strong but internally soft nature—she really can’t be a leader. She must have suffered everywhere these twenty years, with nowhere to turn, which led her to attempt suicide.”

After a long time, Yan Er’niang sighed deeply: “General Qin, you’re a court person and naturally look down on us rebellious traitors. But if we didn’t have unspeakable hardships, why would we wander the martial world and drift across the seas like this?”

Hearing these words and knowing her heart was desolate, Qin Zhonghai consoled: “Now the stronghold is destroyed, your former brothers are gone or scattered—why do you still cling to this place? Why not return to the court with me and forge a new world? How about it?”

Looking at the snowflakes drifting in from outside the door, Yan Er’niang said tremblingly: “General Qin, do you know that every night at the third watch, my elder brother’s appearance before death hovers before my eyes?”

Qin Zhonghai sighed: “You really suffer.”

Yan Er’niang murmured: “Originally everything was so beautiful—everyone robbed the rich to help the poor, eliminated evil and helped good, living happily each day. If that incident hadn’t happened… if that incident hadn’t happened, my elder brother and husband would still be alive and well, and the stronghold wouldn’t have been destroyed. Wu wu…” She began crying painfully again.

Qin Zhonghai thought: “I wonder what happened then that could destroy such a large stronghold? Mount Nucang wasn’t famous for just a day or two—they must have had some talent. How could they not resist?”

Seeing her thoughts confused and knowing her heart was in pain, Qin Zhonghai dared not ask more questions for the moment.

The two sat silently facing each other when suddenly they heard shouting from the mountainside: “General Qin… General Qin… where are you?”

Qin Zhonghai’s heart tensed, knowing Lu Yun had sent people to find him. Fearing the two groups would meet, he quickly said: “Someone’s come looking for me—I must go now. Rest well!” He understood Yan Er’niang was unwilling to serve the court, and if he forced her back, she might commit suicide again. Since Qin Zhonghai had no intention of killing, he was unwilling to do so. He stood up and walked toward the hall door.

Yan Er’niang said tremblingly: “You… you’re leaving now?” Qin Zhonghai nodded: “Lady hero, take care—we’ll meet again someday!” Seeing Yan Er’niang staring at him and thinking she was still worried about her brothers, he said: “Don’t worry, lady—even if your brothers won’t surrender, I won’t let treacherous people harm them.”

Suddenly they heard a long whistle from the mountaintop—this person came very quickly, must be Lu Yun himself. Qin Zhonghai turned back: “Farewell!”

He saw Yan Er’niang looking down at the fire, her face extremely lonely.

Qin Zhonghai had no time to pay attention and rushed out of the hall. Instantly a burst of heavy snow hit his face. Qin Zhonghai squinted and called: “Brother Lu, I’m here!”

Indeed they heard Lu Yun’s voice: “Excellent—you’re really on the mountaintop!” He rushed up and grasped Qin Zhonghai’s hand.

Seeing him brave the wind and snow to search at night, Qin Zhonghai was greatly comforted and thought: “This Brother Lu is deeply loyal—having his assistance is truly heaven’s blessing.” He said: “The wind and snow here are too strong—let’s go down the mountain first!”

Lu Yun asked: “What about that woman? Did the General find her?” Qin Zhonghai shook his head: “Don’t worry about her for now—let’s go!” They climbed down the mountaintop together.

On the road, Lu Yun recalled the soldiers and said to Qin Zhonghai: “Seeing the General didn’t return to camp at night, I feared something had happened and led a thousand men up the mountain to search. In the emergency, I acted without the General’s orders—please punish me.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed loudly: “What kind of talk is this! Am I such a petty person? I’m already extremely grateful that you remembered to look for me—how could I blame you?”

When they returned to camp, several soldiers brought wine to warm them both.

Lu Yun said: “The few people the General captured have been imprisoned, and the Princess will personally interrogate them tomorrow.” Qin Zhonghai nodded: “Later I’ll go see those three. If they speak disrespectfully to the Princess tomorrow and Xue Nu’er fans the flames beside her, these people will surely suffer.”

Suddenly they heard someone outside the tent say shrilly: “I fan the flames? Surnamed Qin, don’t slander my reputation behind my back!” Someone walked in theatrically—it was Xue Nu’er.

Qin Zhonghai chuckled: “Your Lordship is in such good spirits—not sleeping even late at night?”

Xue Nu’er sneered: “Before you great general returned, no one was protecting the Princess’s safety—who could sleep?” He changed the subject: “How is it that you were on the mountain so long yet didn’t capture that murderess? What exactly were you doing up there?”

Qin Zhonghai said: “The wind and snow up there were too heavy, so I had to hide in a mountain cave to avoid the snow. I didn’t see that woman.”

Xue Nu’er smiled: “What a pity—that widow is quite beautiful, charming and pitiful. Though she’s a bit older, she’s still acceptable.”

Qin Zhonghai angrily said: “What nonsense! What filthy things are you saying!”

Xue Nu’er laughed: “The General is over thirty and still unmarried—rarely do beautiful women come throwing themselves into your arms. Why should the General be embarrassed?”

Qin Zhonghai spat and said sternly: “Don’t randomly slander people—a good reputation is ruined by such words.” Seeing Xue Nu’er’s malicious speech, Lu Yun also interjected: “Lord Xue, did you come visiting at midnight just to say these boring things?”

Xue Nu’er’s face flashed with anger as he said shrilly: “Hmph! Just casual chat—look at you being so serious.” He coughed: “Lord He and I have discussed it—tomorrow we’ll exit through Jiayuguan and head directly to the foot of Tianshan.”

Qin Zhonghai was shocked and shouted: “Absurd! Absurd! With strong enemies surrounding us outside the pass, how can we easily exit?”

Xue Nu’er snorted: “Qin Zhonghai, what’s today’s date?” Qin Zhonghai said: “Today is November 15th.” Xue Nu’er sneered: “We agreed to meet at the foot of Tianshan on December 15th—how can we arrive on time traveling this way? The roads inside the pass wind around everywhere through mountains and forests—how can they compare to the flat wilderness and desert outside the pass where travel is fast and smooth?”

Qin Zhonghai shook his head: “I cannot agree to this. Outside the pass is extremely dangerous—if we’re ambushed, I’d be failing the Princess.”

Suddenly they heard Censor He’s voice: “It’s precisely because Zhonghai is here that I dare take this risky move!”

Everyone looked up to see Censor He entering. Qin Zhonghai quickly stood and paid respects: “Censor He.”

Censor He sat down directly: “These past days, news from the court says the Timurid Khan’s intentions have changed. The court is very nervous and wants us to quickly reach Tianshan for both sides to meet—we mustn’t let him change his mind.”

Qin Zhonghai said curiously: “A marriage between two countries is a great joy—how can it change so easily? This Khan’s behavior is too strange.”

Censor He said: “Some days ago, the Khan sent several foreign monks to have audience with the Son of Heaven. Who knew they were bullied and abused by several martial world people on the road, with several injured. When news reached the Khanate, the Khan was naturally furious, thinking our dynasty looks down on them. This incident is probably the key issue.”

Qin Zhonghai nodded: “I wonder which thoughtless martial world people did this—injuring a neighboring country’s envoys is no small matter!”

How could Qin Zhonghai know these foreign monks were injured by Wei Zizhuang and others? That day, fighting over guest rooms, the monks and Jiuhua Mountain people had a dispute and fought. First, the foreigners acted improperly; second, Zhang Zhiyue had a violent temper and injured the envoys. Though Yang Suguan had intervened to mediate, he couldn’t completely smooth things over. This incident damaged relations between the two countries and nearly caused the marriage alliance to collapse.

Censor He said: “Anyway, the incident has happened—we can only try our best to make amends and hope the Khan won’t mind too much. For the sake of making good time, we have no choice but to risk exiting the pass.”

Qin Zhonghai pondered undecidedly when Lu Yun leaned over and whispered: “The roads outside the pass are difficult and distant with many ambushes—this trip will surely fail. Without friendly forces to assist, the General absolutely cannot agree.” Qin Zhonghai suddenly understood and nodded, saying to Censor He: “I have one request—if you can fulfill it, Zhonghai will certainly obey all orders.”

Censor He nodded repeatedly: “Nephew, just speak—as long as it’s within my power, I won’t disappoint you.”

Qin Zhonghai said: “Please order the Yumen Pass garrison to advance three hundred li outside the pass. If not, I dare not exit the pass.”

Qin Zhonghai estimated the situation—as long as Yumen Pass troops could advance outward and occupy several key fortresses outside the pass, even if they encountered enemy ambushes, they could retreat safely.

Hearing this request, Censor He said “Ah!” and said: “This… this matter is difficult.” Yumen Pass had always been controlled by Jiang Chong’s forces. Except for Jiang Chong himself, no one in the court could command them.

Censor He turned to look at Xue Nu’er: “This is very difficult—I wonder if the Deputy Director has any solution?”

Seeing everyone looking at him, Xue Nu’er was quite pleased and thought secretly: “You great officials are usually so arrogant—when it comes down to it, don’t you still have to beg this eunuch?”

Knowing that requesting was inferior to provoking, Qin Zhonghai shook his head: “Censor He, don’t make things difficult. Jiang Chong’s power is so great that even someone as prestigious as Director Xue probably can’t do anything. I think we should find another way!”

Xue Nu’er’s anger rose as he said shrilly: “What nonsense! As long as I, Xue Nu’er, personally act, those dead boys wouldn’t dare offend me!” Xue Nu’er was the Eastern Depot’s Deputy Director—under Liu Jing, he held the highest position and greatest prestige. Even “Sword Cold” Jin Lingshuang of Kunlun Mountain that day didn’t dare offend him to his face. If this person personally acted, Jiang Chong’s subordinates wouldn’t dare be too presumptuous.

Censor He said happily: “Thank you so much, Your Lordship—when we return to the capital, I’ll certainly repay you heavily.”

Xue Nu’er was delighted. Usually his strange temper made most court ministers dislike him and few love him, leaving him stuck in the deputy position for years. Unexpectedly, escorting the Princess from the capital this time allowed him to befriend an important minister like Censor He. He laughed shrilly and repeatedly: “Just my duty—how dare I accept credit, how dare I accept credit.”

With his arrogant nature, actually saying humble words was truly remarkable.
