Mount Hua in the west is listed among the Five Great Mountains of the world, located in the middle section of the Qinling Mountains, and has been famous since ancient times for its imposing, precipitous dangers. The Yuqing Temple is located on Mount Hua’s first peak, North Peak, not far from the main path. Since it was still early, everyone traveled slowly upward, not rushing their journey.
As the saying goes, “Mount Hua has only one path.” From the mountain base to the summit, there is only a narrow sheep’s path for passage. Sometimes it clings to single cliffs, sometimes it runs along mountain ridges – it is truly extremely dangerous. Indeed, after traveling just a few li, everything they saw was steep and treacherous. Looking down at their feet, the spring mud was like snow, with ten-thousand-zhang deep abysses beside them. There were no guardrails on the path – one slip would mean being smashed to death. The locals’ term “Ear-Scraping Rock” came from exactly this.
However, everyone possessed martial arts skills and paid no attention to mere dangerous paths. Lu Yun had climbed peaks in the Western Regions while protecting the emperor and walked as if on level ground. Even that little girl Juan’er had some foundation in lightness skills. Although they were in dangerous terrain, everyone enjoyed admiring the beautiful scenery along the way and had great fun.
When they reached a somewhat spacious platform, everyone took a brief rest. Lu Yun looked up into the distance and saw clouds and mist swirling around strange rocks and bizarre cliffs that appeared quite lofty and isolated. On those cliff faces grew evergreen pines and cypresses with branches covered in misty remaining snow, looking like a fairyland on earth.
Faced with such beautiful scenery, Lu Yun, being a scholar by background, naturally had to compose some verses of admiration. Indeed, his face showed a pleased expression as he spontaneously praised, “What a magnificent Mount Hua! This strange mountain stands alone and aloof, truly having the bearing of uncompromising character. No wonder such a robust mountain could nurture the world’s number one master!”
Juan’er had been following behind Lu Yun all along, listening to him recite things like “Five Li Pass,” “Iron Gate Pass,” “Green Tree Flat Turnback Heart,” and “Han Yu’s Book-Throwing Place.” Her ears were already callused and her heart annoyed from listening. Hearing him start admiring again, she quickly made a face, covered her ears, and called out, “Brother Lu, you’re so long-winded, just like an old woman! Whoever marries you in the future is sure to be unlucky!”
Lu Yun’s face reddened as he thought, “Do I seem like an old woman? I hadn’t noticed that.”
Wei Zizhuang, seeing Juan’er bouncing around and fearing she might fall off the cliff, quickly pulled her back. But he saw that Juan’er’s big eyes were rolling around, staring intently at Lu Yun’s handsome face, as if she was about to tease him again.
Yang Suguan coughed lightly and said, “Brother Lu speaks correctly. Mount Hua is blessed with spiritual terrain and outstanding people. These years have been quite prosperous. Not only are the mountains and waters impressive, but they’ve also produced heroes like Ning Bufan. In terms of reputation, these past years they’ve already shown signs of surpassing Wudang. In the martial world, apart from Shaolin, few current sects can match them.”
Although Yang Suguan was young, due to his lofty position, he associated mostly with first-class figures in the martial world. His insights were naturally beyond what ordinary people could achieve. At this moment, he analyzed the jianghu situation with clear logic.
Wei Zizhuang, hearing these words, knew Yang Suguan spoke the truth but still felt unhappy. He came from Wudang’s Zhenwu Temple, and these past years his sect’s fortunes had declined – he knew this deeply and could only sigh silently for the moment.
Juan’er, being led by Wei Zizhuang’s hand, saw him looking down in silence and immediately wanted to defend him. She pouted and spat, saying, “What’s so great about a little Mount Hua? Our Jiuhua Mountain has a full nine Mount Huas’ worth – much stronger than their one Mount Hua.”
Everyone couldn’t help but smile upon hearing this. Wei Zizhuang patted her little head and laughed, “This is their territory – watch your words.”
Juan’er snorted and was about to retort when suddenly they heard someone curse, “Who says Jiuhua Mountain is stronger than Mount Hua!”
While everyone was surprised, they suddenly saw a tall, thin old man jump out onto the path, holding a golden abacus and looking strangely at everyone. Lu Yun had met this person once before and now recognized him. This person was nicknamed Suanpan Guai (Abacus Monster) and was from Mount Hua’s older generation, always unconventional and irreverent. He was definitely here on orders to welcome guests.
Suanpan Guai jumped next to Juan’er and shouted loudly, “Little girl, you dare come to Mount Hua to cause trouble! You’d better watch your words!”
Juan’er laughed, “Who are you? Carrying that big abacus – are you going to someone’s house to collect debts?”
Suanpan Guai spat and cursed, “I’m going to your grandfather’s house to collect debts! Nine times eighteen – he owes me a total of 180,000 taels of silver.”
Juan’er, hearing his nonsensical rambling, was delighted and immediately laughed, “My grandfather isn’t just my grandfather – he’s also your father’s grandfather. Isn’t collecting debts this way a bit too harsh?”
Suanpan Guai was stunned, “Your grandfather is my father’s grandfather? Then who is your father’s grandfather?”
Juan’er laughed, “Naturally your grandfather.”
Suanpan Guai frowned in thought, “Who is whose grandfather? Why is this so hard to understand?” After a moment, he suddenly realized, “Ah! So your father is my father’s real father – I should call you aunt!”
Juan’er laughed, “Good boy, I’ll give you candy later.”
Only then did Suanpan Guai realize he’d been taken advantage of and became furious, “You have such nerve to actually dare trick your old man!”
Everyone covered their mouths and laughed secretly, all finding it absurd.
Hearing Suanpan Guai cursing loudly, Yang Suguan stepped forward and cupped his hands, “Senior, this humble one is Yang Suguan of Shaolin. At the invitation of your sect leader, I’ve come to your precious mountain to observe the ceremony. Please announce our arrival.”
Suanpan Guai pointed at Juan’er and asked loudly, “What is this little girl to you? She speaks without restraint – why don’t you manage her!”
Juan’er grinned and said, “Didn’t you hear him say he’s from Shaolin Temple? I’m a girl – have you ever seen female disciples at Shaolin Temple? Our two families have no connection whatsoever.”
That Suanpan Guai was usually quite mad, and now his stubborn streak was particularly strong as he shouted, “Bullshit! I can see you talk so much – you must be a man disguised as a woman, probably even a monk dressed as a girl!” He reached toward Juan’er’s head, wanting to see if she was wearing a wig.
Juan’er grinned and pretended to be startled, calling to Yang Suguan, “Senior brother, we’ve been found out! What should we do?”
Yang Suguan smiled bitterly and was about to explain when he saw Suanpan Guai put his hands on his hips and laugh loudly, “This old man has eyes like lightning – what demons and monsters haven’t I seen! Quickly remove your disguise, or you can’t go up the mountain!”
Wei Zizhuang, seeing Juan’er causing too much trouble, quickly stepped forward and cupped his hands, “This humble one is Wei Zizhuang of Wudang. This young lady was just joking – senior, please don’t take it seriously with a child.”
Suanpan Guai was quite rash and crude. Seeing Wei Zizhuang’s unremarkable appearance, he immediately sneered, “Wudang? You people include both Shaolin and Wudang – how do all the martial world sects end up crowded together in your group? Don’t tell me you also have people from our Mount Hua?”
Lingding, seeing his endless entanglement and unwilling to deal with it further, said, “Let’s go up the mountain ourselves – we shouldn’t miss the appointed time.”
Suanpan Guai snorted and waved the abacus in his hand, shouting, “You want to deceive your way up the mountain? Not so easy! If this male-disguised-as-female monster doesn’t remove the disguise, no one is allowed to pass!”
Everyone was both angry and amused, not knowing how to explain.
Just as Suanpan Guai was shouting, they heard someone behind call, “Junior brother, what are you doing?” A short, fat old man leading several guests approached – it was Mount Hua’s Feicheng Guai. This person’s behavior was always absurd, and together with Suanpan Guai they were called “Mount Hua’s Two Monsters” – truly rare specimens of disrespectful elders in the martial world.
Feicheng Guai frowned, “Junior brother, these people are guests – how can you block the path like this? Isn’t this rather discourteous?”
Suanpan Guai pointed at Juan’er, “Senior brother, you don’t understand – this woman is a Shaolin monk in disguise. She wants to deceive her way up the mountain – she must have some conspiracy. How can I not stop her?”
Feicheng Guai was greatly shocked. He looked closely at Juan’er and saw her bright smile and beautiful eyes – truly a beauty. If she was disguised by a monk, it would indeed be masterful craftsmanship. He licked his lips, “Rare for this master to have such amazing disguise techniques – truly remarkable. I wondered how so many strong young monks at Shaolin Temple could endure daily life – turns out it’s like this, hehe…” He put his palms together and bowed, “Amitabha! Who would have thought Shaolin had a seventy-third special skill – my respects, my respects.”
Lingzhen, hearing his foul language, felt indignant and angrily said, “What nonsense are you spouting!”
Feicheng Guai frowned and turned to his junior brother, “This person is so ugly – he should properly disguise and dress up, otherwise wouldn’t he frighten people?” Everyone burst into laughter upon hearing this.
Lingzhen was furious and channeled his Shaolin Great Strength Vajra Finger, reaching toward Feicheng Guai. Feicheng Guai quickly dodged, and with a “crack” sound, a nearby tree had a clump of bark torn off by him. Feicheng Guai exclaimed in shock, “Great Strength Vajra Finger! Truly Shaolin Temple people!”
Lingzhen sneered, “All martial arts under heaven come from Shaolin. Today I’ll let you heretical side-door people open your eyes and see orthodox martial world techniques!” He gathered his breath and was about to strike with his finger. Feicheng Guai, seeing Lingzhen’s finger strength was extraordinary, didn’t dare be careless and quickly drew his weapon, preparing to fight.
Lingding, seeing both families about to fight and knowing they were guests who absolutely couldn’t be discourteous, quickly restrained his junior brother, “Stop this! Everyone just has some small misunderstandings in words – why fight?”
Yang Suguan shook his head and sighed, “Are there no other people in Mount Hua sect? We have important ceremony observation to attend – we really don’t have time for this nonsense.”
Just then, a young man quickly descended the mountain path. Seeing the fat and thin elders challenging the visitors endlessly, he cried out in alarm, “Grand-uncle, Grand-uncle, you’re causing trouble again!” Everyone’s eyes lit up – this young man had extraordinary bearing and particularly bright, spirited eyes. He appeared to be an outstanding talent from Mount Hua’s younger generation.
The young man walked to the two monsters’ side and frowned, “Grand-uncle, Great-grand-uncle, today is Master’s retirement day and you’re still causing trouble. How will I explain to Master later?”
Feicheng Guai, hearing him speak, suddenly blushed and said sheepishly, “I… I wasn’t causing trouble – it’s all your grand-uncle’s fault.” He pointed at Suanpan Guai.
Suanpan Guai pointed at Juan’er and shouted, “I wasn’t causing trouble either! Shaolin Temple sent a male-disguised-as-female monster up the mountain – how can we let her pass?”
The young man sighed and shook his head without speaking. Feicheng Guai, seeing the situation was bad, quickly smiled apologetically, “Grandnephew! We’ll go up first and leave these people for you to handle.” It seemed that although his seniority was high, he didn’t dare disobey this young man. Seeing more guests approaching from behind, he quickly rushed forward to greet them and led those people up the mountain.
Suanpan Guai chased after him calling, “Senior brother, don’t go! How can we leave before tearing off this monster’s fake mask?”
Feicheng Guai laughed and scolded, “Come on! Stop embarrassing yourself – our sect nephew leader will lose his temper again!”
Suanpan Guai grumbled reluctantly and walked away, though his eyes still glanced at Juan’er’s movements with an unwilling expression.
The young man, seeing the two great monsters had left, breathed a sigh of relief and walked toward Yang Suguan and the others, cupping his hands, “This humble one is Su Ying of Mount Hua, greeting all the seniors.”
Yang Suguan, seeing his courteous behavior, was pleased and smiled, “Young Hero Su, we are disciples from sects like Shaolin and Wudang. At Sect Leader Ning’s invitation, we’ve come to your mountain to observe the ceremony – please lead the way.”
This young man named Su Ying was Ning Bufan’s young disciple. Because of his clever nature and extraordinary comprehension, he was deeply favored by the sect leader. Usually all the major and minor affairs on the mountain were handled by him. He nodded slightly and immediately cupped his hands, “May I ask how to address this hero?”
Yang Suguan smiled slightly, “This humble one is Yang Suguan.”
Su Ying exclaimed in surprise, “So you’re the famous Doctor Yang!” He quickly bowed respectfully and gestured politely, “Honored guest, please come this way.”
Everyone, seeing his mature and steady demeanor, secretly admired him. Lu Yun had met this young man a year ago when he was still a shy little boy who kowtowed everywhere. Who would have thought he’d become so composed now – truly impressive.
Everyone walked for a while and reached a mountain peak. This place was suspended on three sides, with two stone tablets erected on the peak. One read “Yuntai Peak First Gate” and the other “White Cloud Immortal Scenery.” This appeared to be North Peak, Mount Hua’s first peak.
Su Ying led the way, bringing everyone toward a wooden tower. This tower stood at the mountain’s edge but wasn’t very tall, and the construction was quite simple. The plaque above read “Yuqing.”
Everyone was curious, thinking, “This is Mount Hua’s Yuqing Temple?” This building wasn’t very conspicuous. In ordinary times, if one climbed the mountain without seeing the characters on the plaque, one would never imagine this was the world-famous “Mount Hua Yuqing Temple.”
Near noon, the temple gates inside and out were filled with people. The Seven Heroes of Dian Cang had arrived, the Emei sect leader had arrived, the Xiangxi Pai Sect forces had arrived… For a time, experts from various sects and schools all gathered here. Looking around, there were several hundred people – all guests who had come up the mountain to observe the ceremony. The Daoist temple wasn’t spacious to begin with, and with this crowd squeezing in, it felt even more cramped.
Wei Zizhuang’s sharp eyes had already noticed that many of the mountain guests carried weapons, but out of respect for their hosts, they all hid their weapons in their luggage. Wei Zizhuang thought, “Looking at all this excitement, most of these people harbor ill intentions, just like that Ximen Song. There’s definitely going to be some good fights later.”
The mountain path was crowded with guests and many passersby. Yang Suguan and Lingding hadn’t walked two steps before people recognized them. Shaolin Temple was the world’s number one sect, and Yang Suguan was also an important court official. Those who recognized them all hurried forward to greet them warmly, fearing they might be discourteous.
Dozens of people crowded around, talking loudly with the three men. Although Lingding’s martial arts were high, he wasn’t skilled at socializing. Lingzhen had an even more rash temperament and would offend people as soon as he opened his mouth. Everything depended on Yang Suguan’s mediation and conversation. His witty words were like pearls, making the assembled heroes laugh heartily with great enjoyment.
Lu Yun stood to the side, secretly admiring him and thinking, “This Doctor Yang is truly remarkable – so young yet already knows people throughout the world.” He, Lu Yun, was a nobody. Coming to this martial world holy land, naturally no one knew him. Even if someone did recognize him, nine times out of ten it would be a familiar customer from when he sold noodles.
Wei Zizhuang, seeing Shaolin’s prestige was so lofty, felt by comparison that his own Wudang sect was even more desolate and couldn’t help but sigh inwardly. Years ago, a great court disaster had nearly caused Wudang Mountain to be sealed by authorities. For this reason, sect leader Yuan Qing acted extremely low-key, neither wanting to provoke disputes nor interested in competing for fame and profit, lest he suffer slander and persecution again. After twenty years, the mighty Wudang Mountain had become almost invisible – things like the Four Great Grandmasters and Number One in the World had nothing to do with their sect.
Although he himself knew quite a few heroes, feeling sad about his sect’s decline, he really couldn’t muster the energy to socialize. When various heroes came to pay respects, he just lazily acknowledged them and went to stand in a corner with Juan’er, Lu Yun and the others.
While the three were feeling bored, they suddenly heard a voice behind them say, “Junior brother, you’re here too!”
Wei Zizhuang found this voice very familiar and quickly turned around to see a Daoist standing before him – it was his senior brother Yuan Yi.
Suddenly meeting a Wudang fellow disciple, Wei Zizhuang couldn’t help but be delighted. He rushed forward and hugged him, calling loudly, “Senior brother! You’ve arrived!” He stood on his toes looking around for other fellow disciples. Yuan Yi pulled him back and said quietly, “Don’t look – apart from me, no one else from our sect came today.” Wei Zizhuang’s face showed complete desolation as he nodded and sighed softly.
Lu Yun stood to the side watching and couldn’t help but feel strange. He thought that Wudang Mountain had been established for over a hundred years with such an exalted position in the martial world – how could it have declined to this extent? Years ago in Yangzhou, he had relied on a book called “Theory of Qi Cultivation” that Wudang sect leader Yuan Qing had given to Gu Siyuan to create his own unique mental cultivation method and develop his internal energy. He had originally wanted to pay respects to this master today, but it seemed fate hadn’t arranged a meeting.
Although Lu Yun wanted to step forward and bow, seeing Wei Zizhuang and Yuan Yi talking closely with their heads together, it wasn’t convenient to interrupt their conversation, so he waited to the side.
Suddenly he heard Juan’er shout loudly, “Master! Master!” Crying as she rushed out. Lu Yun was startled and quickly turned to see an old man riding a donkey slowly coming up the slope on the mountain path, accompanied by a tall, strong man.
Lu Yun exclaimed softly and thought, “Looking at this old gentleman’s appearance, he must be the Jiuhua Mountain sect leader ‘Azure Robe Scholar.'” When he tried to look more closely at his features, he was surprised to discover that Azure Robe Scholar was actually wearing a mask, and couldn’t help but wonder secretly. That Azure Robe Scholar’s face must have some hidden ailment or birthmark, which was why it was inconvenient for him to show his face.
With Azure Robe Scholar’s arrival at Mount Hua, Yang Suguan, Wei Zizhuang and others quickly put down what they were doing and rushed forward to pay respects.
Juan’er pulled her master’s hand and tearfully recounted past events. When she spoke of her martial uncle being killed and her senior sister missing, she cried even louder. After listening, Azure Robe Scholar said nothing. Wearing his human skin mask, his emotions couldn’t be discerned. Wei Zizhuang and others listened from the side, sighing and feeling sad and distressed.
After Juan’er finished her account, Wei Zizhuang shook his head sadly and said, “To think that Zhang Zhiyue, Hero Zhang – such an upright and strong good man – unexpectedly died at the hands of villains. Although we were all accompanying him at the time, that Hu Mei’er was treacherous and cunning, and no one could save him. Alas…” Remembering Zhang Zhiyue’s deathbed entrustment of his orphan, his heart ached and he nearly shed tears.
Azure Robe Scholar sighed and said, “Everyone needn’t blame yourselves. My junior brother had a stubborn nature and never yielded to others – this is why he met with misfortune. The so-called ‘rigid strength must break’ is exactly this principle.”
Lu Yun, hearing Azure Robe Scholar’s words contained philosophy and seeing his extraordinary bearing – neither panicking nor grieving after suddenly hearing bad news – thought this person must have deep insight and definitely wasn’t an ordinary worldly person. He felt quite admiring.
Yang Suguan thought to himself, “This Azure Robe sect leader rarely shows joy or anger – he must have extremely deep schemes and methods, and his techniques must also be ruthless. Hu Mei’er provoking this person is asking for death.”
The same scene was observed by Yang and Lu, but they had completely different interpretations, showing these two men’s characters were truly very different.
While thinking, he heard Azure Robe Scholar continue, “My sect suffering this misfortune was fortunate to have various jianghu colleagues’ assistance – this is good fortune within misfortune. Juan’er, quickly thank these heroes for their life-saving grace.”
Juan’er held back tears and said, “Don’t even mention it! If I hadn’t been with them, senior sister wouldn’t have fallen into bad people’s hands and her life and death would be unknown now. If she hadn’t followed them, senior sister would still be perfectly fine…” She hugged that middle-aged man and cried bitterly.
This man was A’Sha, whom Wu Dingyuan had once met. He stood dumbly beside the donkey, and hearing Juan’er’s crying, didn’t know how to comfort her, still looking bewildered.
Azure Robe Scholar, hearing his disciple’s complaints and seeing Wei Zizhuang and others’ embarrassed expressions, cupped his hands toward everyone and said, “The little girl speaks nonsense – please don’t take offense.”
Wei Zizhuang sighed and said, “Actually, what she said isn’t wrong. If Yan Ting hadn’t traveled with us, this girl wouldn’t have fallen into Kunlun Mountain’s hands. It really is our fault.”
Azure Robe Scholar shook his head, “Everyone needn’t blame yourselves. I have no past grievances or recent enmity with Zhuo Lingzhao. He’s a generation’s grandmaster and shouldn’t make things difficult for a small girl. When he arrives later, I’ll ask him for her return myself – please don’t worry.”
Wei Zizhuang was about to reply when suddenly they heard a voice say, “Azure Robe Scholar indeed predicts events like a god. How could our sect leader, with his status, make things difficult for a little girl?”
Everyone turned to look and saw a man with a long sword at his waist wearing white robes, looking at them imposingly – it was Kunlun Mountain’s “Sword Leopard” Mau Lingshan.
Suddenly seeing their enemy, Lu Yun immediately rushed forward and shouted loudly, “Where have you taken Commissioner Wu? Quickly hand him over!”
Yang Suguan, seeing his rashness, quickly reached out to stop him and said quietly, “Brother Lu, don’t be hasty. There are countless people here who have grievances with them – you don’t need to rush to take the lead.”
Indeed, Lingding had already stepped forward with large strides and said gravely, “This humble monk Lingding dares to ask – where is Sect Leader Zhuo?”
He was anxious about his junior brother Lingyin’s life and safety, but given his status as a Luohan Hall seat holder, he still couldn’t lose courtesy in his speech, so he intentionally showed courtesy before force, planning to start killing later.
Mau Lingshan smiled slightly and said, “Master, don’t be anxious. Your sect’s Master Lingyin has already left with his disciples and should have returned to Songshan by now.”
Lingzhen cursed, “Your mother’s stinking bullshit! A few days ago I fought my way up Kunlun, and you bunch of turtle grandsons hid so not one could be seen. How come now that we’ve met face to face, you say you’ve released them! What kind of fart is Zhuo Lingzhao letting off that doesn’t even have a smell!”
From the distance came a burst of wild laughter, followed by a cold, arrogant voice saying, “You rash monk, watch your words! Lingyin and his disciples have long since rolled far away to Tianshan. If we wanted to kill these fellows, we could have acted long ago.”
As he spoke, a person walked over – tall and thin with a sickly appearance. It was Qian Lingyi.
Lingzhen recognized him and immediately roared angrily, “You old dog still dare to swagger into the Central Plains! Not to mention my Senior Brother Lingyin – you killed the entire Yanling Escort Agency, old and young. How do you plan to repay this blood debt?”
In his great anger, Lingzhen immediately brought up this case to see how Qian Lingyi would respond.
Qian Lingyi sneered, “How to repay? The strong live, the weak die – can’t you understand this principle yet?”
Lingzhen laughed heartily and immediately rolled up his monk’s robe, “Good! ‘The weak die!’ Come, come, come – I’ll give you a complete corpse today.”
This Lingzhen was both hot-tempered and highly skilled in martial arts, intending to sweep the entire field. Since coming up Mount Hua, he’d been looking everywhere for fights. Now that Qian Lingyi spoke so insultingly to him, he was really asking for trouble. He swung his vinegar-bowl-sized fist and walked toward Qian Lingyi, planning to beat him to death with two or three punches.
A young man jumped out and stood between the two men – it was Su Ying, the Mount Hua disciple who had led the way. His face showed anxious concern as he cupped his hands and bowed, “Seniors, please calm down! All the guests who came up the mountain today are good friends of my master. If there’s any unpleasantness later, it would look bad for us as hosts. If you have any private matters, could you please discuss them after going down the mountain?”
Lingzhen paid no attention to him and waved his hand to push Su Ying aside. Who would have thought that Su Ying’s body only swayed slightly but didn’t move an inch?
Everyone, seeing this young man’s martial arts were quite good despite his young age, were quite surprised.
Lingzhen was also stunned. His external hard skills were fierce, and just now he had only used half his strength in pushing, afraid of accidentally injuring a disciple from another sect. Who knew this child’s lower body foundation was extremely solid, and this push couldn’t affect him at all? Lingzhen, as one of the Four Great Vajras, how could he lose face like this? He stepped forward heavily and said in a deep voice, “You step aside!”
Su Ying bowed and said, “This junior has responsibilities and absolutely cannot allow honored guests to fight each other. Please forgive me, senior.” Though his words were humble, his feet didn’t budge an inch.
Qian Lingyi, emboldened, laughed heartily, “Lingzhen, do you think this is Shaolin Temple’s backyard where you can call and command at will? He’s a high disciple of Mount Hua’s sect – if you come here as a guest, you must follow their rules!” He patted Su Ying’s shoulder and laughed, “Little brother, do well – I’ll back you up.”
Lingzhen, seeing Qian Lingyi’s mocking expression and deliberate intention to watch him make a fool of himself, snorted heavily and stepped forward one pace, now three feet in front of Su Ying. If he let this young man drive him away with words, how could this “Tiger Claw Vajra” walk in the jianghu in the future? Instantly, with a “hey” sound, his right claw extended toward the young man’s chest, intending to sweep him aside in one move.
Lingzhen’s right claw struck out with Shaolin’s “Dragon Claw Hand” ultimate technique called “Seizing Pearl Style.” The formidable aspect of this move wasn’t in the right hand’s grab, but in the left claw’s accumulated force remaining motionless. Once the opponent blocked the right hand’s attack, the left claw could strike later but arrive first, instantly controlling the enemy’s vital points. Lingding and others, seeing him use such an ultimate technique as “Seizing Pearl Style,” all knew Lingzhen was eager to save face, fearing he might lose even half a move to this young man and find it difficult to face the assembled heroes in the future.
Su Ying was only a sixteen or seventeen-year-old youth. Seeing Lingzhen’s such formidable grappling skills, how could he not be afraid? Watching the tiger claw grabbing toward him, he quickly activated his sect’s mental cultivation method. In an instant, standing on one foot with both arms spread, he used the move “Double Thunder Fills Ears,” striking both palms toward Lingzhen’s ears. If these palms struck solidly, at minimum the eardrums would rupture, at worst the skull bones would shatter. Everyone, seeing this move was extremely clever, couldn’t help but exclaim “Eh!” in surprise.
Lingzhen had originally planned to wait for the youth to block his right claw, then use his left claw with lightning speed to capture him in one move. Who would have thought this youth would completely ignore the extremely fierce claw before his eyes and instead preemptively strike toward Lingzhen’s ears? This move of striking later but arriving first was supremely skillful, already breaking Lingzhen’s “Seizing Pearl Style.”
Lingzhen, seeing his exquisite technique, immediately roared like a tiger. He simply abandoned his left hand’s hidden move and added force to his right claw, exploring forward like lightning to grab Su Ying’s chest, wanting to capture him before his palm strike could land.
Everyone saw Lingzhen’s change of moves was also extremely fast, instantly recovering from his disadvantage. They all admired him inwardly – if not for feeling he was bullying the small with the big, they would definitely cheer loudly.
Su Ying saw Lingzhen’s claw was extremely fast and realized his “Double Thunder Fills Ears” could no longer reach him. He had originally been standing on one foot, but now his suspended foot suddenly stepped forward. His two palms that had been striking toward Lingzhen’s ears naturally fell and landed on Lingzhen’s shoulders. At this moment, Lingzhen had also grabbed his chest clothing and was about to throw him out, but felt his shoulder well acupoint slightly numb. The youth had somehow used some strange method to instantly hit his pressure point.
All the people in the field were experts and were immediately greatly shocked, never expecting a young boy to have such ability. For a moment, everyone was discussing animatedly. Wei Zizhuang was inwardly surprised and exchanged glances with Yang Suguan. Both thought, “A small Mount Hua disciple can actually practice martial arts to this level! Mount Hua disciples really have some methods!” It seemed this Ning Bufan not only had superior martial arts himself, but his method of teaching disciples was also remarkable. This “Number One in the World” reputation was truly well-deserved.
Lingzhen’s face reddened, knowing he had been too careless and had already lost one move. He thought, “If I’m defeated by this little brat, I won’t be able to mix in the jianghu anymore.”
His true power surged, and in the blink of an eye he had broken through the sealed pressure point. This was truly his signature skill – without decades of profound internal energy, it would definitely be impossible to achieve. He shouted loudly and reached out with his right hand, lifting the youth high up. His internal power reached out, sealing his entire body’s meridians, fearing this youth had other strange techniques.
Having captured Su Ying, Lingzhen was eager to regain face and immediately shouted, “Young friend, today I’ll give you a lesson. In the future when you meet seniors, you must show more respect. Do you hear me?”
Su Ying showed no fear and said sternly, “As long as the senior doesn’t engage in private fighting on this mountain, this junior absolutely wouldn’t dare offend in the slightest.” These words were neither servile nor arrogant, and everyone secretly admired them. Although Su Ying had lost and been captured at this moment, given his tender age, being able to force one of Shaolin’s Four Great Vajras to this extent could be said to be glorious even in defeat.
Lingzhen, hearing him speak back while everyone showed admiring expressions, quickly spat and said loudly, “Little child speaking nonsense – what do you understand!” He tightened his hand and directed his internal force straight toward Su Ying’s chest, wanting to force him to cry out and beg for mercy. Su Ying’s face turned purple, but he gritted his teeth with an expression of preferring death to submission.
Azure Robe Scholar watched for a while and suddenly sighed, “I’ve always heard that Shaolin’s divine monks act chivalrously and righteously. How is it that today you’re making things difficult for a small child? If you injure him, wouldn’t it shame your usual heroic reputation?”
Lingding’s face reddened as he said, “Azure Robe Sect Leader’s criticism is correct. My junior brother has always been crude in temperament. Let me go up and dissuade him.” Knowing he was in the wrong, he was about to step forward to tell his junior brother not to make things difficult for others.
Just then, they suddenly heard someone laugh, “Shaolin monks have such great reputation, but it turns out you only know how to bully children and do things where the big oppresses the small.” Everyone turned to look and saw a person with a smiling face, like a learned scholar – it was the “Sword God’s” arrival.
Before Lingding could rush forward, Zhuo Lingzhao had already floated to Lingzhen’s side and lightly struck out with a palm. This palm was light as a feather yet hard as iron, its palm force already enveloping thirteen vital points on Lingzhen’s chest and abdomen. Lingzhen was startled and quickly raised his palm to block. Zhuo Lingzhao smiled slightly and said, “Release this child.”
He suddenly changed from palm to finger, his finger technique illusory and unpredictable, instantly pointing toward Lingzhen’s waist. This finger skill was transformed from the “Sword Cold” sword technique. The finger force itself had nothing fierce about it – its formidable aspect lay in the cold internal force on the finger. Lingzhen wanted to dodge backward but feared losing face, wanted to seal and block with his palm but feared being too slow. He roared like a tiger, released Su Ying, then thrust forward with both thumbs – this was his signature skill: “Shaolin Great Strength Vajra Finger.” Presumably, with finger force against finger force, Lingzhen would have no reason to suffer loss.
Zhuo Lingzhao only wanted to rescue Su Ying and had no intention of harming the enemy. Seeing Lingzhen release the youth, he laughed heartily and said, “Master is very sensible!” He reached out and grabbed Su Ying’s collar, lifting him up like an eagle catching a chick, then floated back three feet to avoid Lingzhen’s thrust.
Everyone saw Zhuo Lingzhao effortlessly capture the youth within three moves and were all horrified.
Zhuo Lingzhao held Su Ying with one hand and laughed, “Young friend, your martial arts are quite remarkable! You can actually withstand a Shaolin high monk’s Dragon Claw Hand. Who is your master?”
Su Ying, though suspended in mid-air, showed no panic on his face and calmly answered, “My master is this mountain’s sect leader, the great hero Ning who is called ‘Number One in the World.'”
Zhuo Lingzhao made an “oh” sound and said, “Young friend, at your young age, how do you know he’s ‘Number One in the World’?”
Su Ying said proudly, “My master has fought over eight hundred battles, large and small, in his lifetime and never lost even half a move.”
Zhuo Lingzhao laughed heartily and set him down on the ground, saying, “Very good! In my lifetime of fighting with others, I too have never lost even half a move.” His implication was clearly that he intended to compete.
Su Ying suddenly found himself face to face with this martial world giant and naturally couldn’t help but be afraid. He wanted to say some polite words, but seeing the faint killing intent in Zhuo Lingzhao’s eyes, he didn’t dare speak.
Yang Suguan and Lingding exchanged glances, both understanding clearly that this Zhuo Lingzhao had come to Mount Hua definitely for the “Number One in the World” title and had no good intentions. Yang Suguan secretly assessed the situation. Seeing their side had many experts – besides Lingding and Lingzhen, there were also Wei Zizhuang, Qin Zhonghai, Lu Yun and others – even if Azure Robe Scholar remained neutral, their side would definitely not lose.
Just as Yang Suguan was about to speak, Azure Robe Scholar had already stepped forward. He coughed lightly and said, “Sect Leader Zhuo, according to these friends, my disciple seems to have been staying as a guest on your mountain these past few days. Thank you for your guidance, Sect Leader Zhuo.” His words carried barbs, mocking Kunlun Mountain for disregarding ethics and bullying juniors.
Zhuo Lingzhao, seeing this person wearing a human skin mask, had already recognized him. He smiled slightly and said, “So it’s Azure Robe Sect Leader who has arrived. I didn’t know of your honored presence – truly discourteous.” He bowed slightly but didn’t mention Yan Ting’s whereabouts.
Azure Robe Scholar was noncommittal and only said flatly, “Sect Leader Zhuo needn’t be overly polite. Please bring out my wayward disciple to meet me – how about it?”
Zhuo Lingzhao sighed and said, “These past few days staying with your honored high disciple, I’ve only felt she’s beautiful, lovely, understanding, and very endearing – truly enviable. Sigh… I still need to learn much from you about this eye for selecting disciples.” His tone was sincere and he seemed genuinely fond of Yan Ting – it didn’t appear to be false.
Azure Robe Scholar, seeing him evading the subject, said flatly, “This child Yan Ting is timid and shy. Being praised by Sect Leader Zhuo is her good fortune for three lifetimes. I just don’t know where she is now, so I can bring her back to the mountain as this master, to avoid adding more worry and disturbance to your sect.”
Zhuo Lingzhao sighed and shook his head, “Speaking of this girl… alas… what a pity, what a pity…”
Everyone’s expressions changed upon hearing this, deeply fearing Yan Ting had already met with foul play. However, Azure Robe Scholar was a person of deep schemes and calculations. If she was already dead, panicking uselessly would be of no help. He remained unmoved and said coldly, “Sect Leader Zhuo calls it a pity – did this child do something wrong?”
Qian Lingyi, standing to the side, now interjected with a laugh, “She didn’t do anything wrong, but this little girl Yan Ting didn’t listen to our sect leader’s advice and willfully went off with a bandit. This bandit is cruel by nature and often stares at this girl lecherously. Who knows if something has happened by now?” He gave two nasty laughs.
Azure Robe Scholar, hearing his frivolous tone, just made an “oh” sound and said, “I don’t know what person took away my wayward disciple – please enlighten me.”
Qian Lingyi laughed, “This damn bandit is tall and sturdy with a strong body, has a fierce square face, and used to be a constable in Xiliang Prefecture…”
Lu Yun and Yang Suguan exchanged glances and said happily, “Dingyuan is still alive!”
Qian Lingyi laughed and cursed, “Nonsense! This damn bandit is lively and vigorous, of course he’s still alive. Looking at this damn bandit’s lecherous appearance, he’s probably already ravaged her. Hehe, that little girl Yan Ting with her white tender legs – that bandit boy really has good fortune, damn it…” He licked his lips with an indescribably shameless expression.
Azure Robe Scholar, being extremely shrewd, heard Lu Yun and Yang Suguan’s words and knew this constable was a friend of Shaolin, certainly not a villain, and immediately felt relieved. That Qian Lingyi was about to ramble on more when he saw Azure Robe Scholar flick his sleeves and had already left with Juan’er and others.
Qian Lingyi called out, “Hey! I haven’t said what this damn bandit’s surname and name are! How can you just leave like this?” He actually chased after them.
Lingding stepped forward and struck out with a palm, immediately sending Qian Lingyi tumbling, saying gravely, “This humble monk Lingding has several matters to consult with Sect Leader Zhuo.”
Lingding’s martial arts had reached sainthood and could compete with Zhuo Lingzhao. This time when he struck, it was with an ultimate technique, clearly intending to start killing. That Su Ying’s responsibility was to prevent martial world figures from fighting privately, but seeing this Master Lingding’s extraordinary bearing and profound power, far beyond what Lingzhen could compare to, even with ten times the courage he wouldn’t dare step forward to block. For a moment he was extremely anxious, not knowing what to do.
Zhuo Lingzhao laughed, “Master wants to fight again? Didn’t you hear this young hero say not to let us fight on the mountain? Master, why are you at it again?”
Lingding calmly pointed down the mountain and said, “Let’s not make things difficult for others. Let’s go down the mountain and speak clearly!”
Zhuo Lingzhao raised his long eyebrows and laughed, “Master insists on seeing who’s superior?”
Lingding said nothing more. He spread both hands then brought them together. With a thunderous “boom” like heavenly thunder striking down, this move was called “Thunder Opens Heaven and Earth,” the opening form of “Luohan Bronze Gongs and Cymbals.” Since ancient times, among Shaolin warrior monks, only Luohan Hall seat holders were taught this ultimate art. Everyone saw Lingding was completely confident and had already brought out his signature skill, figuring the two would definitely have a good fight.
Zhuo Lingzhao laughed heartily, appearing nonchalant but his eyes showed waves of killing intent. For a moment, the two were at daggers drawn, the situation very tense.
Just then, they suddenly heard a cannon sound from the distance, followed by someone calling loudly, “The auspicious time has arrived! Please, all honored guests, enter the hall to witness together the grand ceremony of Yuqing Temple’s Sect Leader Ning’s retirement!”
Zhuo Lingzhao smiled slightly and said to Lingding, “Does Master want to go in? Or shall we go down the mountain to decide victory?”
Lingding remembered the sect leader’s instructions that he represented Shaolin in observing the ceremony. If he didn’t go in now, it would definitely be discourteous. Weighing the advantages and disadvantages, he could only snort and say coldly, “After the major event is concluded, this humble monk would like to invite Sect Leader Zhuo for a cup of clear tea – please be sure to honor us with your presence.”
Zhuo Lingzhao laughed heartily, “That won’t be necessary. If Master wants tea, there’s plenty inside. If we want to drink later, we can drink to our heart’s content – why go to the trouble of seeking far when near is available?”
Everyone felt a chill in their hearts, knowing Zhuo Lingzhao intended to challenge Ning Bufan. Today would definitely be a situation of multiple conflicts and killings.
Zhuo Lingzhao, seeing Lingding’s murderous aura, smiled slightly, flicked his sleeves, and led his disciples away. Yang Suguan, seeing Lingding’s eyes burning with anger, quickly stepped forward and said quietly, “Senior brother, let’s go in first. We mustn’t be discourteous.”
Lingding exhaled a breath of stale air, put his palms together in salute to Azure Robe Scholar, and also led his people into the temple gates.
When the assembled heroes entered the hall, they saw it packed with people. Apart from seven large seats in the hall that were empty, all other seats were already occupied. Yang Suguan looked around and saw those seven large seats were arranged in two rows – three in front, four behind. This seating arrangement was clearly the main seats for the major sects.
Currently, Central Plains martial world was divided into eight sects: Shaolin, Wudang, Kunlun, Mount Hua, Emei, Dian Cang, Jiuhua, and Kongtong. Except for the leaders of Shaolin and Wudang who hadn’t come, all other sects had their sect leaders personally attending.
While looking, Su Ying went to report, then a middle-aged man with a wretched expression quickly rushed out and said to everyone, “Thank you for your trouble! Thank you for the trouble of Master Lingding, Sect Leader Zhuo, and Daoist Yuan Yi gracing Mount Hua with your presence! Please come this way!”
Yang Suguan saw this person’s ugly appearance and lowly manner, looking like a shop assistant. He must be someone like Suanpan Guai. He immediately frowned but followed Lingding forward.
Walking to the front seats, the wretched man said, “Well, Shaolin Temple’s Abbot Lingzhi didn’t come, so please let Master Lingding take the first seat.” He gestured politely and seated Lingding.
Yang Suguan, seeing his sect being respected, was secretly pleased and thought, “Our Shaolin’s reputation is lofty. Although Mount Hua claims to be ‘Number One in the World,’ before our temple’s thousand-year martial reputation, they don’t dare show the slightest disrespect.”
While he was calculating in his mind, the man also seated Yuan Yi in the second large seat. It seemed that although Wudang Mountain’s momentum had declined in recent years, its potential was still limitless and not to be underestimated.
Seeing Yuan Yi seated in the second large seat, with Zhuo Lingzhao’s narrow temperament, he must be displeased. Yang Suguan glanced sideways and indeed saw the “Sword God” wearing a cold smile, seeming somewhat resentful. Yang Suguan secretly laughed, “Zhuo Lingzhao has the smallest stomach in his life. If Mount Hua disciples arrange things improperly later, he’ll definitely turn hostile on the spot.”
Indeed, that wretched man, seeing Zhuo Lingzhao’s icy gaze, was already frightened into continuous coughing, at a loss. He repeatedly bowed and gestured toward the third chair with an apologetic smile, “The Sword God gracing Mount Hua’s Yuqing Temple brings radiance to our humble dwelling – please take the upper seat.”
Zhuo Lingzhao, seeing himself seated in the third position, ranking only after Shaolin and Wudang in the martial world, wasn’t too aggrieved, so he just smiled coldly and sat down. That wretched man didn’t dare be negligent and quickly invited Azure Robe Scholar to sit, placing him behind Lingding.
The leaders of various martial world sects took their seats one after another. Even Yang Suguan, Wei Zizhuang, and the Kunlun experts were all assigned positions. Although that wretched man looked ordinary, he was a rare talent for management. He arranged everything in perfect order, seating people according to their reputation and status. Though many people came, not one complained.
When it came to Juan’er’s turn, the wretched man saw her tender appearance and smiled, “Little girl, you’re Juan’er, right? Do you want to sit beside your master?” Without waiting for her answer, he had someone bring over a bench and place it beside Azure Robe Scholar’s seat.
Juan’er, hearing him recognize her, couldn’t help but be overjoyed and said happily, “You know my name is Juan’er?”
The wretched man grinned, “Ting’er and Juan’er with high swordsmanship and beautiful as flowers – who in the martial world doesn’t know?”
Juan’er, hearing him praise her to the skies, was immediately delighted and quickly tugged at Azure Robe Scholar’s sleeve, laughing, “Master! Listen to how much he praises me!”
The man laughed, “It’s a pity the little girl doesn’t have a nickname, or I would sing your praises day and night.”
Juan’er laughed, “Who says I don’t have a nickname? I thought of one long ago! From now on just call me ‘Jade Maiden Divine Sword Little Spirit’! That’ll do!”
All the sect leaders, seeing her endearing manner, laughed heartily. Even someone as grim-faced as Zhuo Lingzhao couldn’t help but smile.
Azure Robe Scholar shook his head and ignored her. He beckoned A’Sha over and said, “Later there will be many people here with loose tongues – it’s very stuffy. Just go play in the side hall.” It turned out Azure Robe Scholar knew A’Sha’s mind wasn’t right and couldn’t handle formal occasions, so he asked Mount Hua disciples to take him to the side hall to play, to avoid unnecessary trouble.
A’Sha made an “oh” sound and scratched his head in confusion, “Side hall? Play what?” Everyone, seeing this A’Sha had a burly build but his face was dirty and covered with mud, couldn’t help but secretly wonder, all guessing this person’s background.
Juan’er, hearing her master intended to send A’Sha away, immediately felt anxious. She was inseparable from this person, and having been down the mountain for so long, she had countless things to say. Who knew they would have to separate again? Just as she was about to speak out to stop it, Azure Robe Scholar had already called over a Mount Hua disciple, “This disciple of mine is restless and can’t sit still. Please trouble this young brother to take him to gamble a few hands to pass the time.”
A’Sha, hearing the word “gamble,” snorted through his nostrils repeatedly, then suddenly rushed forward and grabbed the disciple, laughing loudly, “Let’s go! Let’s hurry and gamble happily – I’ll roll a hundred big ones in a row and make you lose your pants!”
The disciple, being grabbed by the collar, was frightened into trembling all over, “This won’t do – our sect rules forbid gambling…”
A’Sha laughed, “Good! Then I bet you definitely won’t dare gamble with me for a hundred taels of silver…” Rambling on, he had already dragged the disciple out of the temple gates, frightening all the guests into dodging left and right, not knowing where this madman had come from to cause trouble.
Azure Robe Scholar, seeing Juan’er with teary eyes, reached out and gently held her small hand, saying tenderly, “Silly child, master hasn’t seen you for a long time. Stay here and keep master company obediently, will you?”
Juan’er, hearing her master’s affection for her, immediately smiled through her tears and just clung to him.
As soon as the various sect leaders were seated, everyone began socializing. Yang Suguan looked carefully and saw Lingding and Yuan Yi with their heads together, chatting casually. Yang Suguan was very pleased and thought, “Currently the martial world’s righteous path lacks prominence – evil demons are rising everywhere. Our Shaolin should properly connect and associate with Wudang. If I get a chance later, I must have a good chat with Daoist Yuan Yi.”
After watching for a while, he turned to look at Zhuo Lingzhao and saw him smiling while quietly talking with the sect leaders of Emei and Dian Cang. Seeing these three people laughing and chatting harmoniously, appearing quite intimate, Yang Suguan sneered inwardly. This Zhuo Lingzhao had swept away his arrogant air and must be trying to make friends widely, so he could rally heroes in the future to compete with Shaolin and Wudang.
Yang Suguan sneered a few times and looked around the great hall. This person was always meticulous. Today Mount Hua was a place where dragons and snakes mixed – it could be said to be extremely dangerous. At this moment he wanted to understand clearly the hall’s furnishings and mechanisms to avoid falling into others’ traps later.
Looking around, he suddenly saw three empty chairs placed on the right side of the great hall. He hadn’t noticed when entering earlier. Yang Suguan was curious and thought, “The leaders of all major martial sects have already arrived – who are these chairs reserved for?”
Those three chairs were luxuriously styled with carved dragons and painted phoenixes, clearly reserved for the most important guests. But he didn’t know what other masters hadn’t yet arrived. Yang Suguan, seeing this, couldn’t help but secretly speculate.
Just as Yang Suguan was thinking, he suddenly saw Lu Yun beside him turning his head frequently as if restless in his seat, so he asked, “Brother Lu, is there something wrong?”
Lu Yun turned around and frowned, “I see General Qin hasn’t come up the mountain yet – I hope nothing has delayed him.”
Yang Suguan looked up and saw that Zhuo Lingzhao was still chatting and laughing with people, so it was impossible he had left the hall to kill anyone. He felt relieved and smiled, “Brother Lu needn’t worry. Zhonghai has superior martial arts and is also shrewd and intelligent – who could do anything to him?”
Lu Yun shook his head and stood up, “Since there’s nothing happening anyway, I’ll go wait at the main gate – at least there’ll be someone to look out for him.”
Yang Suguan, seeing his stubbornness, didn’t feel it proper to say more and just nodded, “Brother Lu, come back quickly. When the ceremony begins later, entry and exit might be somewhat inconvenient.”
Lu Yun smiled and agreed, “I understand.” He squeezed out of the crowd and hurried out of the hall, then stood outside the temple gates looking into the distance.
Since returning from the Western Frontier, Qin Zhonghai seemed to have many worries on his mind and was often silent. Lu Yun, seeing this, was also secretly worried. He thought, “General Qin treats me as affectionately as a blood brother. I must properly help him plan and strategize so he won’t be so troubled anymore.” Ever since Wu Dingyuan’s disappearance, Lu Yun took the loyalty between friends even more seriously. Seeing Qin Zhonghai’s troubles, he wanted to help share his worries and ease his burdens, but didn’t know why his mind was so unsettled.
While thinking, he saw two men walking together. These two were tall – the one on the left was quite thin with an aged face, about sixty-some years old, with a faintly stubborn and fierce air about him, but it was unclear who he was. The one on the right had a tiger’s back and bear’s waist with a robust build, naturally imposing without anger – it was Qin Zhonghai.
Lu Yun was delighted and quickly went to meet them, calling, “General Qin! I’m here!”
Qin Zhonghai, seeing Lu Yun’s arrival, was suddenly startled, as if he hadn’t expected Lu Yun to be waiting at the temple gates. His expression was somewhat uncomfortable as he laughed dryly, “Brother Lu, why did you come out?”
Lu Yun said, “I saw you weren’t coming up the mountain and couldn’t help worrying, so I came out to look for you!”
Qin Zhonghai reached out with his fist and lightly tapped Lu Yun’s chest, laughing, “I’m not a three-year-old child – look how nervous you are.”
Lu Yun smiled and turned to look at the old man beside Qin Zhonghai, asking, “Who is this senior? General Qin, could you introduce me?”
Qin Zhonghai was startled upon hearing this, his expression somewhat hesitant as he mumbled, “This… this person is…”
Lu Yun, seeing Qin Zhonghai’s hesitation, couldn’t help but feel slightly surprised, “General Qin has always been fearless – what’s wrong with him today?” Just as he was about to inquire, he heard the old man speak for himself, saying flatly, “This old man is Fang Zijing.”
Earlier when everyone was chatting idly in the inn, Wei Zizhuang had mentioned the titles of the world’s four great grandmasters, one of whom was this “Nine Provinces Sword King” Fang Zijing. However, Wei Zizhuang hadn’t mentioned his personal name, so Lu Yun, hearing the three characters “Fang Zijing,” actually didn’t know he was that world-renowned supreme expert. He only cupped his hands and said, “So it’s Master Fang. This junior Lu Yun pays his respects to you.”
Fang Zijing, hearing the two words “Lu Yun,” smiled slightly and asked, “You’re Zhonghai’s advisor?”
Lu Yun, hearing him reveal his identity, immediately felt curious, “So Master knows of me.”
Fang Zijing didn’t answer but patted Qin Zhonghai’s shoulder, “You young people chat more. I’ll go in first.”
Qin Zhonghai grabbed his hand and called, “Master! I still have things to ask you…”
Fang Zijing turned back with a smile, “This place has many people and loose tongues. We master and disciple have special identities and shouldn’t say much. If we can meet later, it won’t be too late to talk then.” As he spoke, his figure flashed and he had already entered the hall.
Qin Zhonghai watched Fang Zijing’s retreating figure and couldn’t help but sigh deeply, his manner quite dejected.
Lu Yun, hearing Qin Zhonghai call Fang Zijing master, immediately exclaimed “Ah!” and said apologetically, “So Master Fang is General Qin’s master – I was terribly rude just now.”
Qin Zhonghai shook his head, “It doesn’t matter. My master is a person who has transcended worldly concerns and never takes offense at such etiquette.”
Lu Yun nodded, “Did your master also come to see Ning Bufan’s retirement?”
Qin Zhonghai looked toward the temple gates but didn’t answer directly, only saying, “Brother Lu, I must ask you to keep my master-disciple lineage secret. My master has a somewhat peculiar temperament and doesn’t like others to know I’m his disciple.”
Lu Yun made an “oh” sound and thought, “This Master Fang is really strange. Having a disciple like General Qin should make him happy – why doesn’t he want others to know?”
He knew this was their family affair. Though he felt extremely curious, it wasn’t appropriate to ask more at the moment, so he could only agree.
