Shou Fu Yang Cheng Shou Ce – Chapter 166

Shortly after, Concubine Qiao arrived with Luo Yilie.

Luo Yilie had dressed up for the occasion. She wore jade-green bracelets on her wrists and styled her hair in a hanging-tassels bun. She wore a lake-green silk jacket embroidered with flowers, covered by a layer of gauze, and a plain white moon-glow skirt.

Lady Cao silently admired her beauty and smiled, beckoning her closer. She spoke in a gentle, approving tone, “This must be the Sixth Young Lady. Indeed, she’s a true beauty!”

“You’re too kind, Lady Cao,” Luo Yilie curtsied. She already knew Lady Cao had come to propose marriage and blushed slightly.

Lady Cao invited her to sit down and asked softly, “Do you know who wants to take you as a concubine?”

“The maid who came to fetch me already told us,” Luo Yilie’s face reddened further.

When she and Concubine Qiao had learned who it was, they were stunned for a long time. After the messenger left, Concubine Qiao excitedly pulled her aside, saying, “My dear girl, it’s Commander Lu! Do you know what kind of person he is? If you can marry Lu Jiaxue and whisper in his ear, with his influence, you’ll live a life of luxury!”

Luo Yilie felt as if she had been struck by a gold ingot, unable to process the information.

She had heard tales of this legendary figure—the Marquis of Ningyuan who commanded a powerful army. He had even used bloody means to purge his clan to secure his title. How had he suddenly taken notice of her?

“But… it’s just a concubine position,” she hesitated.

“My child, do you think the primary wife of an ordinary family could compare to being Commander Lu’s concubine?” Concubine Qiao laughed at Luo Yilie’s naivety. “What does it matter if you’re a concubine? With Lu Jiaxue backing you, who would dare look down on you? I could finally secure my position in the Luo family through you.”

Luo Yilie asked hesitantly, “Is Commander Lu really that powerful?”

“Your Third Brother may hold a high position, but he’s just a third-rank minister,” Concubine Qiao lowered her voice. “Lu Jiaxue is the Commander of Xuanfu. Even Luo Yining’s father, the Duke of Ying, must bow to him and follow his orders.”

Recalling this conversation, Luo Yilie sat straighter than ever before in the main hall. She noticed Luo Yining sitting diagonally in front of her, looking pale and distracted. Luo Yilie couldn’t help but think that Yining must be both envious and shocked, explaining her poor complexion.

Finally, there was a day when Yining would envy her.

Lady Cao focused her attention entirely on Luo Yilie throughout the conversation. When Yining accepted a plate of dates from a maid and offered it to Lady Cao, she took a few and gave them to Luo Yilie instead, smiling, “I see the Sixth Young Lady looks a bit pale. She should eat something to boost her energy.”

Yining’s lips twitched slightly as she set the plate back on the table.

Lin Hairu invited Lady Cao to stay for lunch before leaving. Seeing the mother and daughter’s current demeanor, she guessed they wouldn’t refuse the proposal. She smiled and said, “This is a good match. As her stepmother, I’ll give my consent on her behalf. We’ll send someone to your residence tomorrow to make it official.”

Lady Cao was finally escorted out of the mansion. Meanwhile, in the main branch of the family, Chen Shi had heard the news and personally brought Luo Yiyu, who had recently returned from her maiden home, to visit Luo Yilie.

Despite rarely seeing each other for years, they were now exceptionally affectionate, holding Luo Yilie’s hands and praising her. Even the usually quiet Luo Yiyu managed to squeeze out a few words like “Dear sister, we’ve been close since childhood.” Yining watched silently, thinking to herself how insincere this sudden closeness seemed, given that they had barely interacted for years.

After drinking tea for a while, Luo Yining returned to her quarters to rest. Though she had been tired earlier, now she found herself unable to sleep.

Lu Jiaxue had always been unpredictable. Did he truly want to take Luo Yilie as a concubine?

Yining recalled his words: “I won’t let you go.”

What Luo Yining wanted to know most was what Lu Jiaxue was planning. His current actions were puzzling—sending someone to propose marriage out of the blue. If he genuinely wanted to marry Luo Yilie, that would be one thing, and Yining wouldn’t interfere. But now, with the situation unclear, what scheme was he plotting?

Luo Yining gradually drifted off to sleep, and in her dreams, she hazily recalled the scene from years ago when Lu Jiaxue had come to propose marriage.

It was spring when the apricot blossoms were in bloom. He wasn’t yet Commander Lu then, his young and handsome face wearing a peaceful smile as he conversed with her grandmother. When Yining caused the curtain to move slightly, Lu Jiaxue glanced in her direction with a knowing smirk, as if he had been aware of her presence all along. He didn’t expose her, his eyes full of expectation.

Suddenly, the spring apricot blossoms vanished, and the sky turned dark and foggy. Someone was hoarsely calling out a name. At the foot of a cliff, amidst scattered rocks and dense shrubs, he stumbled forward. Those supporting him urged, “Young Master, we can’t find her. We must go back—you have important matters to attend to, we can’t delay!”

He shoved their hands away and continued forward, his voice raw and broken. It was said that the cuckoo’s cry of blood was born from the transformation of an emperor’s soul—perhaps it sounded like this, each note filled with pain.

Yining’s eyes flew open as she woke from the nightmare with a start.

Her forehead was covered in sweat. It was that nightmarish cliff again.

What had she dreamed about? She had never witnessed such a scene. Could it be that after her death, Lu Jiaxue had come to search for her at the foot of the cliff?

Seeing that it had grown dark outside, Luo Yining called for someone to light the lamps.

Pearl entered with a candelabra, immediately brightening the room with a warm glow. As she wiped Yining’s sweat, she remarked, “It’s so cool out, yet you’re drenched in sweat from your sleep.”

Yining shook her head, not wanting to discuss it, and asked, “Has Third Brother returned?” She needed to tell him about Luo Yilie so he could prepare.

“The young master came to check on you once when he woke up, but seeing you sleeping soundly, he left. He hasn’t returned yet.”

Yining nodded and inquired about the situation with Luo Yilie. Pearl replied, “The Second Master rushed back to visit Concubine Qiao and the Sixth Young Lady. Concubine Qiao’s courtyard is as lively as a festival. The household staff sent many gifts over, and I saw people from various branches of the family sending presents as well. Would you like to send something too?”

Yining had Pearl help her up. “What’s the point of adding flowers to a brocade? She’ll still try to kill me if she gets the chance.”

But after some thought, she changed her mind. With Luo Chengzhang currently at Concubine Qiao’s place, not sending a gift might invite criticism from her. Yining instructed Pearl to take a high-quality jade Buddha’s hand ornament from her collection and send it to Concubine Qiao’s courtyard.

Luo Shenyuan emerged from the Hall of Supreme Harmony alongside Xu Wei and others. Xu Wei’s face was cold with anger, and he remained silent.

Earlier in the hall, regarding the situation in Guiyang, Wang Yuan had submitted a memorial listing eighteen crimes allegedly committed by Zhou Shuqun, painting him as an unforgivable criminal deserving of death. In the end, the emperor declared, “Since he took his own life without facing his crimes, I shall ensure his existence is worse than death!”

Zhou Shuqun had been an upright official who had worked tirelessly for the people during his tenure. Not only had Wang Yuan’s faction stolen credit for his accomplishments, but they had also tarnished his reputation. Now that trouble had arisen, they were using him as a scapegoat.

Xu Wei had nearly lost his composure on the spot.

After turning a corner, Xu Wei finally spoke to his two favorite disciples: “We can’t let this continue.”

His expression was grave as he looked at both disciples before settling his gaze on Yang Ling. “Youming, you should not be involved in this matter. Tomorrow, I will petition the emperor to appoint you as Siye of the Imperial Academy. From today onwards, you should limit your interactions with us.”

Yang Ling was stunned, not understanding his teacher’s intentions.

“Teacher, are you… transferring me?” He did hold the lowest position among them, so it made sense that his teacher wouldn’t want him involved. Though he understood, Yang Ling felt a bit disappointed.

Xu Wei said, “Don’t ask any more questions. Shenyuan and I will handle this.”

He waved his hand, gesturing for Luo Shenyuan to follow him. Yang Ling watched their retreating figures and sighed softly. Even if he didn’t envy Luo Shenyuan, he sometimes lamented how different their fates were. Though they had passed the imperial examinations together, Luo Shenyuan’s position was now far beyond his reach.

Luo Shenyuan lowered his head and smiled. Siye of the Imperial Academy? Xu Wei was being extraordinarily thoughtful. Yang Ling didn’t realize that while this position seemed unimportant, after a few years, he would have connections throughout the court, making any future endeavors much easier.

“Shenyuan,” Xu Wei stopped and gazed at the distant palace lanterns. “I want to start with Wang Yuan’s son. He’s not as cautious as that old fox. I have some evidence against him, but it’s far from enough. Are you willing to help me?”

Xu Wei wanted to protect Yang Ling, shielding him layer by layer. This meant he needed someone to face danger directly, requiring exceptional wit and ability to handle crises. Of course, this would also train him to become accustomed to dealing with dangerous situations. Luo Shenyuan replied, “I’ll give it a try first. If it doesn’t work, I’ll let you know.”

He walked straight past the gate, where his carriage was waiting outside the Zhongzhi Gate.

Luo Shenyuan closed his eyes as he sat in the swaying carriage. An attendant walking alongside said, “Lord Luo, the master sent word that Lady Cao came on behalf of Commander Lu today, expressing interest in taking our Sixth Young Lady as a concubine. The master is waiting for you to discuss this matter.”

Lu Jiaxue had sent someone today?

Luo Shenyuan opened his eyes.

Before leaving earlier, he had gone to check if Yining was sleeping peacefully. She seemed restless as if having a nightmare. Seeing her discomfort, he had moved her from the chaise lounge to the wooden bed. Looking at Yining, he felt a softness in his heart. He had lightly kissed her lips.

Luo Shenyuan released her and adjusted her blankets. He heard Yining mumbling something. Leaning closer to listen, he repeatedly heard the word “Lu.” He stood there listening for a long time.

Luo Shenyuan couldn’t help but be concerned. If it weren’t for his inability to deal with Lu Jiaxue, he would have killed him long ago. Unfortunately, Lu Jiaxue’s position solidified over more than a decade, and was far beyond his reach.

Hearing the attendant’s words, he finally understood that the “Lu” on Yining’s lips was Lu Jiaxue.

Luo Shenyuan’s mood had soured considerably today. He leaned against the carriage wall to rest, knowing he couldn’t confront Yining about this. As a politician, Luo Shenyuan excelled at controlling his emotions; he couldn’t allow himself to lose control.

Upon arriving at the Luo residence, Luo Shenyuan went to meet with Luo Chengzhang to discuss Lu Jiaxue’s matter.

Luo Shenyuan’s attitude had changed. If Lu Jiaxue truly wished to marry Luo Yilian, he wouldn’t stand in their way. He planned to provide Luo Yilian with a dowry, eager to send her to the Lu family as soon as possible. However, if Lu Jiaxue’s intentions weren’t genuine, Luo Shenyuan would remain vigilant.

Luo Chengzhang was overjoyed. He had always worried about Lilian, and now her connection to such a prestigious family would ensure her comfort and protection. Moreover, it could benefit the Luo family, as Lilian might influence the governor through pillow talk. Although she would be a concubine, Lu Jiaxue had never taken one before.

Luo Chengzhang had already sent someone to inform Lin Hairu to prepare for Lilian’s wedding. While Lu Jiaxue’s side would treat it as taking a concubine without the six etiquettes, Luo Chengzhang wanted his daughter to have a grand wedding befitting a primary wife, complete with feasts, dowry, and all the traditional elements.

Luo Shenyuan discussed the matter with his father late into the night. In contrast to his father’s enthusiasm, he remained calm, advising caution and a wait-and-see approach.

When Luo Shenyuan returned home, Yining was waiting for him, reading by candlelight. She turned to him and said, “I wanted to talk to you about Luo Yilian.”

Luo Shenyuan asked, “About Lu Jiaxue wanting to take her as a concubine?”

“If Lu Jiaxue truly wanted a concubine, why go to such lengths?” Yining continued. “Sending a matron and coming personally seems odd. With his current power and eccentric behavior, he could have anything he wants…”

“Father is pleased with this match,” Luo Shenyuan sat beside her, pondering. “Others can’t oppose it. If he genuinely wants to take Luo Yilian as a concubine, let him. If not, I’m curious to see what he’s planning.”

Noticing his silence, Yining found it strange and asked, “Third Brother?”

“It’s late. Let’s rest,” Luo Shenyuan replied, turning back.

After washing up, he extinguished the candles, plunging the room into darkness. Yining, accustomed to sleeping with a candlelit, decided to join him in his bedding rather than relight it.

As she tried to find her way, strong arms pulled her into his embrace. Before she could react, he had her in his bedding, his body pressing heavily upon her, his breathing quickening.

Yining was startled. In the darkness, she could only feel his warm breath.

“Third Brother…” she called out.

“What are you doing?” he asked coldly. “Yining, is sleeping in my arms so comfortable?”

“It’s not bad,” Yining whispered. Then, sensing his body’s reaction, she stiffened.

Luo Shenyuan laughed bitterly, saying, “Yining, I’m a grown man. Do you know how much I suffer when you sleep with me?”

Yining, recalling how he often slept poorly when they shared a bed, suggested, “Then I should light a candle.”

As she spoke, she felt his lips on her neck, sending a shiver through her. Her sensitive skin reacted to his touch.

“You want to leave now?” Luo Shenyuan pressed her down. “From now on, I can hold you while we sleep, however, I like, as long as you’re comfortable. But we can’t maintain our previous relationship.”

Before Yining could process his words, she felt her clothes loosening. Shivering from the cool air, her toes curled.

Luo Shenyuan’s breath grew hotter, his kisses on her lips and cheeks scorching. He held her hands firmly, ignoring her feeble attempts to break free. Yining, caught off guard by his muscular chest and strong arms, found herself breathless.

She instinctively clung to his solid frame.

Yining could feel the intensity of his desire. Even as she tried to escape, he gripped her hands tightly. Her delicate fingers were easily enclosed in his large hands. He brought her fingers to his lips, kissing each one, sending tingles through her sensitive fingertips.

Her hands felt silky in his grasp, smoother than the finest silk. With both her hands restrained, she was powerless against him. “Don’t be afraid,” he whispered.

The moonlight revealed her loosened clothing, exposing a red undergarment embroidered with lotus leaves. The delicate lotus buds seemed ready to bloom.

When Luo Shenyuan had been her brother, he would have relented at her slightest resistance. But as a husband, his desire to possess her was stronger. His voice, though gentle, carried a primal undertone.

Luo Shenyuan wanted to make her his. He had always managed to restrain himself before, but this time, he couldn’t hold back.

He lifted her, pressing her beneath him. Yining, unable to refuse, found her lips sealed with his once more.

Yining let out an involuntary moan. “No… I can’t…” she feared she couldn’t endure it.

Her soft protests only fueled his passion. He pinned her against the headboard. Yining, in pain, tried to push him away, realizing he hadn’t fully entered her. Luo Shenyuan was already showing great restraint; otherwise, her situation would have been far worse. She, who had never cried in pain before, now felt tears welling up. He paused, whispering, “It will get better…”

He had no choice; his previous restraint had always been partly due to this reason.

It wouldn’t get better; they simply weren’t compatible!

Yining tried to bite him in frustration, but his muscles tensed, making it impossible. Instead, she heard Luo Shenyuan’s low groan.

Yining, barely fourteen and delicate, seemed like a small lamb beneath his mountainous frame.

Luo Shenyuan smiled, pulling her up to sit in his lap. She could only cling to him as he led her into a new world. Like a ripe peach, full of sweet juice, being forcefully devoured. After what seemed like an eternity, he finished, panting heavily. Yining, already exhausted, felt herself drifting off. Her attempts to push him away were feeble; she had become like putty in his hands.

But as he calmed down, somewhat satisfied for the first time, he held her comfortingly before initiating a second round.

When Yining finally fell into a deep sleep in the early hours, she vaguely felt herself being carried to be cleaned. Feeling cold, she burrowed into his warm embrace. He brought her back to bed, finally able to hold her as she slept, since that was what she liked.

From now on, if there were any issues, she would have to resolve them. This was the price for a good night’s sleep.

The next morning, Yining awoke with intense soreness throughout her body, remembering how he had taken her repeatedly despite her protests.

He was awake too, but Yining couldn’t bring herself to look at him, turning instead to gaze at the white light outside the window.

Luo Shenyuan rose to dress, his muscular back bearing the marks of her scratches. He approached her gently, saying, “Rest well today. I’ve asked the maid to prepare sugar water with poached eggs for you. I’ve already informed Mother that you won’t be paying respects today.”

Yining, recalling the previous night, didn’t want to look at him. Luo Shenyuan lifted her face and kissed her forehead, saying, “I’ll be back tonight.”

Yining, feeling too sore to move, wanted to bite him. Don’t come back tonight!

But he had already donned his official robes and left.

Just then, a maid announced that Lou Mama had arrived. Yining allowed them to enter. Lou Mama entered with Pearl and Daimao, her usual smile fading as she saw Yining’s condition.

Upon realizing that Yining and Luo Shenyuan had consummated their marriage, Lou Mama’s expression grew serious. As the wet nurse of Duke Ying, she had cared for him since childhood. She had given up the chance to retire to the countryside to accompany Yining as part of her dowry, concerned that the young bride might be hurt by her husband’s lack of restraint.

Lou Mama instructed Pearl and Daimao to attend to Yining while she prepared a bath. Her anger grew as she saw the girl’s condition, noting the torn flesh that indicated the young mistress had been forced beyond her limits.

Lou Mama applied a soothing ointment to Yining’s bruises, unable to contain her distress: “Next time the young master does this, you must call for us servants. How can you endure such treatment!”

Yining, lost in thought, only responded when Lou Mama called out to her. She said, “…Have the kitchen prepare some nourishing soup with gastrodia and codonopsis.”

Lou Mama hesitated, “For whom?”

Yining sighed, “For me, of course. I need to regain my strength.” Otherwise, she feared she couldn’t survive many more such encounters.

When Luo Shenyuan returned that evening, he found Yining still reading by the window.

A small plate of honey-drenched dates sat nearby, nearly empty. Winter sunlight filtered through the ginkgo branches, illuminating her book. Luo Shenyuan approached and saw she was reading “Xiaozhu Ji.” Hearing his footsteps, she didn’t look up but pushed the plate aside, saying, “Pearl, bring me more dates. I’m thirsty; I’d like some tea, too.”

“If you have tea now, you won’t be able to eat dinner later,” the newcomer suddenly said.

Yining looked up to find Luo Shenyuan had returned, still in his official robes. The leather belt accentuated his waist, highlighting his broad shoulders and tall frame. He looked particularly handsome and dignified.

“…You’re back early today?” she asked.

Being alone with him now carried a strange sense of intimacy, making Yining feel somewhat awkward. He sat down beside her and explained, “The Provincial Administration Commissioner returned to the capital today to report. He said there were bountiful harvests in all regions, with no famines or disasters, so the morning court ended early.”

Unsure what to say, she poured him some tea.

“We won’t need separate bedding anymore,” he said suddenly, picking up her book and running his fingers over the pages. He looked up, adding, “I’m still your elder brother, but now I’m also truly your husband.”

Yining felt a sense of being cherished, still viewing him as her brother.

But right now, she thought separate bedding would be better.

Luo Shenyuan raised an eyebrow. “What, you don’t want that?”

“It’s not that…” She picked a date from the plate and offered it to him, smiling. “I just think it might be better to… sleep separately for now.” She needed time to recover, after all.

Luo Shenyuan’s lips curved slightly as he replied calmly, “If that’s what you want, we’ll do it your way for now.”
