Chapter 25: Point of Divergence

Zhang Chenze’s eyes widened. She couldn’t say a word and could only unconsciously retreat backward.

“What’s wrong?” Qiao Jiajin’s view was blocked by Zhang Chenze, and he didn’t know what had happened.

He saw this haughty lawyer retreat several steps, then plop down on the filthy ground.

“You… you…” Zhang Chenze pointed her finger at the female shop assistant.

Everyone also looked over and discovered that in the female shop assistant’s open palm was a small section of an arm. That arm was very small and delicate, not like that of an adult. Moreover, the fingers on it were clearly distinct—it definitely wasn’t some animal.

It seemed this female shop assistant had indeed cooked an infant.

The infant’s arm was now emitting an enticing fragrance.

Qi Xia saw this scene and, connecting it with the environment of this bizarre room, instantly understood something.

“This is… the piglet?” Qi Xia asked tentatively.

“That’s right.” The female shop assistant nodded. “You won’t eat it?”

Qi Xia’s face darkened as he asked again, “You said if we slept with you, you could eat the piglet. What you eat is this kind of piglet?!”

“Yes.” The female shop assistant looked blankly at Qi Xia. “Piglet is very delicious.”

The smell of blood here was very strong. There were bloodstains on the female shop assistant’s thighs and on the bed. If Qi Xia’s guess was correct, this woman had given birth not long ago and then cooked the child.

She wanted men to sleep with her simply to eat the child.

“I can only eat piglet about once a year…” The female shop assistant smiled, revealing dry yellow teeth. “I just wanted to ask if any of you were willing to sleep with me? I can trade pig’s feet with you…”

“We, we won’t eat it…” Officer Li shook his head.

“Since you won’t eat it… then forget it…” She fumbled around, stuffed that boiled infant’s arm into her clothes pocket, and wiped the grease on her hands.

Zhang Chenze saw the clothes she had draped over the other person become like this and couldn’t say anything.

Before this, she had never imagined that cooking human flesh would have so much grease.

Tiantian slowly walked to the female shop assistant’s side and said to her with a complex expression, “Miss, what you ate wasn’t a piglet—it was a child…”

“A child?” The female shop assistant’s lifeless eyes rolled. “That’s a piglet. It suddenly burst out and even hurt me when it hit me.”

Everyone looked at each other. No one could continue the conversation.

“Hey… I’m hungry again.” The female shop assistant raised her eyebrows. “I’m going to drink the pork soup. It’s so good to be full.”

After speaking, she turned around and walked back into the employee break room. Before closing the door, she seemed to remember something and smiled foolishly at everyone, saying, “Please browse freely!”

Then she shut the door heavily.

The group remained silent for a long time. The atmosphere was very oppressive.

Finally, it was Qi Xia who broke the silence and spoke.

“Everyone, even if this godforsaken place doesn’t get destroyed after ten days, we can’t return to the real world.” Qi Xia reached up to touch his forehead. “If we have to stay here forever, sooner or later we’ll go mad like her.”

This time, Officer Li didn’t object to Qi Xia.

He was also hesitant. In this clearly abnormal city, under this dark red sky and clay-yellow sun, how long could humans maintain their sanity?

The sound of cookware clanging came from inside the room. It sounded like the female shop assistant had served herself another bowl of delicacy and was now feasting on it.

With only a door separating them, a woman was eating the child she had just given birth to.

Everything about this place was too abnormal.

“I want to go out and take a look.” Qi Xia said. “Aren’t you curious? What exactly is this place? Who are these people? Does the city have edges? What’s outside? How did we get here, and how do we get out?”

Rather than “curiosity,” the expressions on everyone’s faces looked more like fear.

“I just feel there’s danger everywhere here…” Xiao Ran shook her head and said to Qi Xia. “Rather than going out to participate in those ‘games,’ I’d rather find a safe place to stay.”

“Pretty lady, there’s no food or water here.” Qiao Jiajin touched his stomach and said. “If we want to survive, we can’t really go eat that piglet, can we?”

His position was self-evident. Rather than staying here waiting to die, he also wanted to go out and take a look.

The nine people now seemed to be split into two teams—some wanted to leave, some wanted to stay.

Doctor Zhao looked at Han Yimo beside him and said, “Going out to look around is no problem, but the injured can’t go. He’s destined to stay here. As a doctor, I should also stay to care for him.”

“Then I’ll stay to keep you company…” Xiao Ran said quietly.

“Are you trying to get yourselves killed?” Qiao Jiajin shook his head. “A patient, a weak girl, plus a doctor—the three of you plan to live here?”

“I’ll also stay.” Officer Li suddenly spoke.

The three from Doctor Zhao’s group turned to look at him, knowing that with the physically robust Officer Li also staying, it would naturally be safer.

Officer Li nodded toward Doctor Zhao and said, “This punk is right. The three of you alone here would be too dangerous. Not to mention those animal masks—even if that woman inside goes crazy, you couldn’t handle it.”

Now the number choosing to stay had reached four, and everyone’s eyes settled on Tiantian, Zhang Chenze, and Lin Qin.

These three women hadn’t yet stated their positions.

“Of course I’m staying.” Zhang Chenze smiled slightly. “I’m a lawyer. Before all the information is in hand, I won’t take initiative. That would cause me to make wrong judgments.”

After speaking, she stood up and walked to Officer Li and Doctor Zhao’s side.

At this moment, Qi Xia and Qiao Jiajin seemed to have become the odd ones out. In this world that seemed fraught with danger, they wanted to go out exploring, like children who hadn’t grown up.

Tiantian looked at Lin Qin beside her, then walked to Qi Xia’s side, yet never spoke.

She seemed to need no reason to join Qi Xia’s team.

“Hm?” The corners of Qiao Jiajin’s mouth lifted. “I thought you’d stay.”

“Stay?” Tiantian smiled bitterly and shook her head, then extended her finger to point at the ground, saying, “Can’t you see? There’s a wall here. This wall forces me to go.”

“Wall?” Qi Xia and Qiao Jiajin looked down but didn’t see any “wall.”

“On one side of the wall are police officers, lawyers, doctors, and writers. On this side of the wall are liars, thugs, and prostitutes.” Tiantian’s tone was flat. She tucked a strand of hair from her forehead behind her ear and continued, “Our ‘camps’ were determined from the very beginning, right?”

Qi Xia and Qiao Jiajin’s expressions shifted as they understood Tiantian’s meaning.

Yes, even though all nine of them were ordinary people forced to come here, they still had their own “camps.”

Qi Xia, Qiao Jiajin, and Tiantian were all people surviving in the gray areas, destined to be incompatible with the others.

Now the only person who hadn’t chosen her “camp” was Lin Qin.

According to her identity as a “psychological counselor,” she should also go to the other side of the “wall.”

But what no one expected was that she slowly walked to Qi Xia and the others’ side.

Qi Xia vaguely felt there was something off about this girl, but couldn’t say what was strange.

“You’re coming too?” Tiantian looked at this girl with confusion. “You’re not the same kind of person as us. If you go with them, perhaps…”

“But I’m very useful.” Lin Qin covered her nose and mouth and smiled at Tiantian, interrupting her words. “I understand human nature. Maybe I can help.”

Qiao Jiajin stretched lazily and said slowly, “Great, with two pretty ladies accompanying us, the liar and I won’t be bored.”

“Don’t call me ‘liar boy.'” Qi Xia said with furrowed brows. “And I don’t need you all following me either.”

“Okay, okay…” Qiao Jiajin nodded. “When are we leaving? Now?”

“I…”

Before Qi Xia could finish speaking, Lin Qin interjected, “It’s really getting quite late. I personally suggest we go out tomorrow instead.”

“Tomorrow?” Everyone turned to look out the window. Indeed, the sky had already darkened.

That sky had become even more dark red, continuously emanating a dangerous aura.
