Chapter 41: I’ll Hold Her

When Tan Jin arrived home, he didn’t even have time to put down the dog before calling Lin Shilan first.

His parents opened the door for him. If it weren’t for that familiar little face and familiar voice, they would have thought a homeless person had wandered in.

After dumping the puppy in his room and finishing his phone call, Tan Jin changed his shoes and immediately prepared to go out again.

“Where are you going?” His mother chased after him, shouting: “At least wash your face and change your clothes!”

He was like a little whirlwind—whooshing in through the door, making a quick round, and then instantly sweeping away again, impossible to call back.

Tan Ziheng drove Lin Shilan to the clinic, but Tan Jin arrived even faster.

When he reached the clinic entrance, Tan Jin was already waiting there.

His appearance startled Tan Ziheng—his younger brother looked exactly like someone who had spent three sleepless days hauling bricks at a construction site.

With no time for idle chat with Tan Jin, Tan Ziheng called Lin Shilan’s name twice, but she remained unconscious.

He parked the car properly and opened her door, about to lift her out.

Before Tan Ziheng’s hands could even touch Lin Shilan, a dark figure suddenly darted to their side.

“I’ll hold her.” Tan Jin forcefully squeezed his older brother aside.

“Let me give you a hand.” Tan Ziheng tried to move forward on his own.

Tan Jin roughly refused him: “No need!”

He decisively hoisted her up, using the posture of a construction worker carrying a sandbag.

Lin Shilan’s drooping head rested against his back.

Fumigated by the stinky sweat smell from Tan Jin’s clothes, she didn’t wake up, but her hand unconsciously waved, trying to escape the odor.

Her strength was too weak.

Tan Jin thought she was adjusting because the position was uncomfortable.

“It’s okay, it’s okay, we’ve reached the clinic.”

He comforted her, patting her back while his arm circled her more tightly.

“…”

Tan Ziheng couldn’t bear to watch anymore.

He followed quickly, originally intending to help a little.

When he came closer, he suddenly saw that Tan Jin’s arm was bleeding.

“Xiao Jin, what happened to your hand?”

That was from earlier when he rescued the puppy and got scratched climbing over the fence. Tan Jin currently had no mood to care about it. He carried Lin Shilan alone and had already entered the clinic.

After the examination.

Lin Shilan’s body had no major problems.

She had fainted from fright.

Having been drenched in rain all day, plus running around exhausted, she had only eaten a little something in the morning. With her body’s blood sugar low, she couldn’t easily recover after fainting.

The doctor arranged an IV drip for her.

“Let’s hang some glucose at the clinic. Once the symptoms ease up a bit, she’ll be able to wake up.”

As he was speaking, Lin Shilan vaguely heard voices, her eyelids lifting slightly.

She saw Tan Jin again.

He still had that strange appearance.

His face was dirty and dark, his hand covering his injured arm.

Noticing her gaze, Tan Jin turned to look at her.

“Lin Shilan?” Waving his hand in front of her eyes, he greeted her.

Bright red blood covered both his hands. Lin Shilan’s fragile little heart pounded rapidly. Missing a breath, her consciousness faded again.

Tan Jin’s big dark face rapidly drew near.

Unable to withstand this kind of stimulus, she passed out again.

The perpetrator of this second offense was completely ignorant of his crime.

She didn’t wake up. He could only scratch his neck and dejectedly retreat to the stool where he’d been sitting.

“Let me look at your injury. It seems quite serious there.”

The doctor adjusted his glasses and examined Tan Jin’s arm: “The situation isn’t optimistic. It needs stitches. Even when it heals, it will probably leave a scar.”

“Fine, stitch it up.” Tan Jin’s expression was calm.

The doctor was curious: “How did you get cut like this? You even carried that girl just now—don’t you feel the pain?”

He answered honestly: “It’s alright. I was cut by glass shards. It hurt a bit when I got cut, but I didn’t feel anything afterward.”

“Tsk tsk, young people are really tough,” the doctor added a few strokes on the paper: “Then I’ll also need to give you a tetanus shot.”

Taking the form the doctor gave him, Tan Ziheng led Tan Jin to find the clinic’s nurse.

They had to pay first, and after the nurse helped Tan Jin disinfect the wound, they would return to the doctor.

Tan Ziheng opened his wallet and pulled out several bills.

Tan Jin had been watching from the side.

His brother’s black diamond-patterned wallet caught Tan Jin’s attention.

He had a deep impression of that wallet.

Because it was a gift from Lin Shilan to Tan Ziheng.

“Why are you still using it?”

As if asking casually, Tan Jin leaned against the counter, not even looking at him.

“What?” After paying the medical fee, Tan Ziheng took a few seconds to react: “You mean the wallet?”

Tan Jin nodded.

“Oh. This was a gift Xiao Lan gave me before I went to college. It’s quite useful.”

Tan Ziheng was about to put the wallet away, but his younger brother extended his hand toward him.

“Let me see.”

Tan Ziheng hesitated, his hand not extending outward but instead gripping it tighter.

For some reason, he didn’t really want to give it.

Seeing this, Tan Jin was even less likely to let the topic go.

“I remember Dad gave you a new wallet for his birthday this year, and it was a name brand too. Don’t you like it? Why aren’t you using the new one?”

He smiled and put the wallet back in his pocket.

“I just love using this one. I’m used to it.”

Tan Jin wanted to say more, but his brother urged him: “We haven’t finished the important business yet. Your arm needs stitches. Let’s go.”

During the wound treatment, Tan Jin was completely distracted the entire time.

His mind was thinking about other things. The pain from his arm didn’t even make his brow furrow once, as if the blood flowing wasn’t his own.

By the time he finished, Lin Shilan’s IV was almost done too.

Before they went home, Tan Ziheng stopped by the small supermarket next to the clinic.

“Do you want to eat anything? I’ll buy some things to take home. Xiao Lan’s mother is angry with her and won’t let her go home. She’s staying at our place tonight.”

“Okay.”

Tan Jin really didn’t treat himself like a patient at all. Without needing rest, he stood up.

“I’ll go with you.”

They bought some food and drinks.

This time, when Tan Ziheng paid at the register, Tan Jin’s gaze deliberately focused on his wallet.

In the black wallet, there was a transparent card slot, usually used for holding photos.

Tan Ziheng’s movements were quick, but Tan Jin still clearly saw… there was a small paper card tucked in there.

It was drawn with simple black marker pen—a hand-drawn card.

Lin Shilan’s handwriting was beautiful, but her drawing was incredibly ugly.

She rarely drew, afraid of being laughed at.

The hand-drawn card in Tan Ziheng’s wallet was from her hand.

She had drawn a Tan Ziheng holding a basketball, with a smiling her standing beside him, holding up a congratulatory sign.

To distinguish the boy from the girl, the Tan Ziheng she drew had hair that looked like needles sticking up all over his head, while the girl had very long hair, reaching her waist.

Even though the two cartoon figures had severely disproportionate limbs and comical expressions, he who understood Lin Shilan knew that she had put considerable thought into this drawing.

The figures were slightly distorted, but at least the content could barely be distinguished.

Tan Jin still remembered… when Tan Ziheng received Lin Shilan’s gift, he opened the wallet, saw the card, and burst into laughter.

His brother had laughed uproariously, unable to stop for quite a while, laughing until Lin Shilan felt embarrassed.

She came over to snatch the card back, to stop him from making fun of her.

Only then did Tan Ziheng stop laughing. He held the wallet up high and took the opportunity to ruffle her hair.

“Little friend. How can you take back something you’ve already given away?”

Lin Shilan was teased by him until her face turned red, her expression indignant: “The wallet is for you, give me back the card.”

Tan Ziheng smiled gently: “Why should I give it back? I really like it.”

Heh.

Tan Jin didn’t like it.

Back then, he extremely disliked it.

Now, he super extremely disliked it.

Clearly there were many better wallets, yet since that day, Tan Ziheng had been using the wallet she gave him.

He’d used it for a long time, but used it very carefully. The wallet’s condition looked well-preserved.

However, the small wallet’s card slot was no longer enough for him. So many cards were squeezed tightly together, stuffing the wallet until it bulged.

Yet Tan Ziheng had never removed that ugly hand-drawn little card.

The blessing “Happy New College Life” written on it was long outdated.

Tan Jin knew Tan Ziheng well.

His brother was a neat person who pursued order and organization.

Why would he allow such an outdated, ridiculous card to lie in a wallet he looked at every day?

Tan Jin thought this and also voiced the question aloud.

“Brother. That card should be replaced, right?”

His brother clearly heard him but didn’t immediately respond. Tan Ziheng lowered his head, neatly putting away the change.

After closing the wallet, he smiled at Tan Jin.

“I don’t want to change it.”

Carrying the purchased items, Tan Ziheng put them in the car first.

Tan Jin followed him over.

His brother unlocked the car and spoke to him directly.

“You sit in the car and wait. I’ll go get Xiao Lan.”

Tan Jin naturally disagreed: “No way. Who knows if she’s awake yet. I need to go over. If she’s not awake…”

“I’ll hold her.” Tan Ziheng said.

His words blocked, Tan Jin furrowed his brow tightly.

His brother expressed his meaning more clearly and completely once again.

“If she’s not awake, I’ll carry her over. Your hand was just stitched—you need to rest. I have more strength than you. Either way, it should be me who holds her.”

Tan Ziheng gave Tan Jin the car keys and walked toward the clinic.

Tan Jin stood there in place.

Gritting his teeth, he was truly unwilling to accept this.

He locked the car and ran after his brother toward the clinic.
