Chapter 301: The Appeal Document

In the midst of the screaming, Ji Yunshu turned around to look and saw a woman dressed in simple clothes with disheveled hair and a haggard, aged face drenched in the rain, desperately picking up papers scattered in the rainwater.

Her mouth kept anxiously repeating: “No, please don’t…”

Realizing it was her fault, Ji Yunshu immediately sat down on the ground to help her pick up those papers one by one.

Because they had scattered everywhere and were almost all soaked by the rainwater, and with people constantly walking back and forth, several sheets of paper had been trampled beyond recognition.

Ji Yunshu picked up a few sheets and looked at them.

It was actually an appeal document!

But before she could read the general content—

“Give them to me.”

The woman frantically snatched the papers from Ji Yunshu’s hands and pushed her away.

With a choked voice, she shouted loudly: “This is to save Ye’er, you’ve ruined it all, ruined everything. What am I supposed to do now? It’s all your fault.”

“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to, I…”

“Get away!”

The woman pushed her shoulder hard again, clutched the crumpled papers, and ran off into the distance.

Ji Yunshu picked up a sheet she had dropped, stood up and chased after her for a few steps, but the woman’s figure had already disappeared.

Then someone bumped hard into her back, and her body suddenly fell sideways. Fortunately, she crashed into a solid chest.

This spared her from another embarrassing fall!

Above her head, an umbrella instantly appeared.

“Shu’er, are you alright?”

Wei Yi’s voice sounded in her ear.

Looking up, she met Wei Yi’s clean, clear eyes.

Wei Yi looked at her with distressed eyes and pulled her soaked body into his embrace, holding her tightly.

“Shu’er, why are you completely drenched? Are you very cold? Don’t be afraid, I’m holding you, you won’t be cold anymore.”

Warm breath from Wei Yi’s chest reached her cold nose tip, cheeks, and earlobes…

Making her tremble uncontrollably all over.

She gently pushed him away and asked: “Why are you here?”

“Brother Muruo wasn’t around, so I came out by myself.”

Ji Yunshu’s body felt cold. She knew she couldn’t hold on much longer, her pale lips trembling.

She said: “Wei Yi, can you carry me back?”

“Yes!”

He cheerfully agreed.

Wei Yi obediently bent down. Ji Yunshu took the umbrella from his hand and climbed onto his back.

Her head rested weakly against his broad shoulder as she gave him directions!

This scene felt strangely familiar.

Wei Yi carried her toward Zhuxiyuan. Thinking of how her clothes were soaked through, he quickened his pace.

Yet he couldn’t help chattering on.

“Shu’er, I haven’t seen you for so long. You haven’t come to Brother Muruo’s place in ages either. I thought you’d forgotten about me. I cried for several nights.”

“Shu’er, I can treat people’s illnesses now. Brother Muruo said if the face shows three parts yellow and the tongue coating appears white, it’s liver deficiency. If the forehead turns white, the cheeks shine, and the chest feels stuffy, it’s a lung disease. And also…”

“Yesterday, Brother A’Si gave me a writing brush. He said my handwriting wasn’t good-looking, so he taught me a few characters. I learned how to write your name, Shu’er. When you get better, I’ll write it for you to see.”

“Shu’er, Shu’er…”

Ji Yunshu listened quietly but had no strength to respond with even a single word.

Wei Yi walked faster and faster. Glancing sideways at the drowsy Ji Yunshu, he said softly: “Shu’er, shall I sing you a song? Don’t fall asleep.”

Ji Yunshu nodded her head slightly.

And so—

He sang that song “Young Man” again.

“Like times of old, the wind gently blows, Young Zhao returns home, Puyang bathed in sunlight, little letters, the young man departs, songs of frost and wind, month after month returning home…”

Still with that rough voice, yet gentle and pleasant to hear!

After returning to Zhuxiyuan, Ji Yunshu developed a high fever, lying in bed in a daze. The maids in the courtyard quickly summoned a physician. After several visits, the temperature on her forehead finally came down with difficulty.

She finally fell asleep!

Fortunately, Shi Jin was by her side to help her change clothes, otherwise her female identity might have been exposed.

After an unknown amount of time, Ji Yunshu was awakened by the heat.

Turning her head to look, Wei Yi was lying asleep by the bedside, revealing the petal-shaped red birthmark on the back of his neck. She stretched her hands out from under the covers and reached toward that birthmark.

The moment she touched it, Wei Yi woke up, lifting his sleepy eyes to look at her.

Grasping her hand, he said happily: “Shu’er, you’re awake. You scared me so much. Next time you can’t do this again. Mother said you must never get caught in the rain, or you’ll get sick.”

“I’m fine now.”

“That’s good. Shu’er must obediently listen.”

“Mm!”

Wei Yi blinked his eyes and quickly rummaged through his sleeve. After searching for a while, he pulled out a blood-red jade piece.

He said: “Shu’er, this is a jade pendant I’m giving you. When I was carrying you back, it fell from your body. Fortunately, I picked it up.”

The exquisite and translucent jade lay flat in Wei Yi’s palm.

She reached out and took the jade pendant: “This jade was left to you by your father. You should keep it yourself.”

She pushed the jade pendant back to Wei Yi.

But Wei Yi put both hands behind his back, refusing to accept it.

“I don’t want it. I gave this to Shu’er, so it belongs to Shu’er. I don’t want to take it back.”

Ji Yunshu propped herself up to sit, holding the jade in her hand to examine it carefully.

This was a piece of superior blood jade. Ji Yunshu’s fingertips gently rubbed over the uneven jade surface. She had never examined this jade pendant so carefully before.

On the exquisite jade surface was actually carved a lifelike tiger head!

On the left side of the head was a crescent moon shape.

Turning it over, on the back was carved the character “xu.”

It must be said, Master Wei’s jade was truly exceptional.

And this jade could be seen to be quite extraordinary.

“Wei Yi, since this was left to you by your father, you should keep it with you.”

“No!” Wei Yi immediately jumped to the side: “I gave this to Shu’er. Doesn’t Shu’er like it?”

“Of course that’s not it.”

“Then Shu’er should keep it. Anyway, what’s mine is yours, Shu’er!”

With firm determination, he smiled innocently.

Just as the two were pushing it back and forth—

A maid entered from the doorway, holding a dried piece of paper in her hand. She came over and said: “Master Ji, is this paper yours? It was found in the clothes you changed out of.”

With that, she handed it to her.

Ji Yunshu took it and looked, discovering it was the appeal document left by that woman from earlier.

Because it was only one page, it wasn’t complete.

Moreover, most of the characters on the paper had been blurred by the rainwater, somewhat unclear. She could only roughly determine that it mentioned a girl named Ye’er and referred to a murder case from three years ago. The rest wasn’t detailed.

Since it was an appeal document, the person naturally wasn’t from the capital. Presumably, she had traveled all the way from some prefecture or province to the capital to overturn the case.

Thinking of how she had ruined that appeal document and the woman’s current anxious state, Ji Yunshu couldn’t help but feel guilty.
