This sea of flowers vividly illustrated the direct sensory experience of the phrase “dazzled and confused.”
After walking forward about ten meters, Bai Youwei saw lotus flowers in the flower bushes—petals white as snow with golden stamens. Three to five blooms stood in the flower cluster, graceful and beautiful.
Bai Youwei tugged on Shen Mo’s clothes, having him help her stand up. She wanted to pick the lotus.
“You’ve decided this quickly?” Wu Lili beside her said in surprise. “There are still many flowers ahead.”
“I just like this one.” Bai Youwei leaned against Shen Mo to stand, supporting herself with one crutch, then used the other crutch to hook the lotus in the flower cluster.
Hooking it close, she grasped the deep green stem—thick, sturdy, covered with small thorns.
She’d thought it would take some effort, but unexpectedly, a light pinch and it snapped. The white lotus was in Bai Youwei’s hands.
Others looked at her incredulously, unable to understand why someone would pick a flower so quickly without reconsidering. There were clearly so many beautiful flowers ahead!
Then the next second, Bai Youwei reached out again!
“You can only pick once!” Someone couldn’t help but remind her.
This time it wasn’t Zhang Qi, but a plump auntie whose eyes showed she was one step away from writing the word “fool” on her face.
Bai Youwei ignored her, reaching out to hook the lotus pod that had been beside the lotus flower earlier, neatly picking it.
Shen Mo: “…”
“Do you think the lotus seeds here are edible?” Bai Youwei asked, holding up the fresh lotus pod.
Shen Mo was silent, then glanced around. The others were indeed staring dumbfounded at them.
He looked down again and found Bai Youwei had already started peeling the lotus pod.
Everyone: “…”
Bai Youwei sat in her wheelchair, picking out the plump, tender lotus seeds one by one and placing them on her skirt, then peeling and eating them one by one.
“A bit bland. Not as sweet as the ones you helped me pick last time.” She peeled one and casually offered it to Shen Mo’s lips as if no one else was there. “Try it.”
Shen Mo pressed his lips together and looked at her.
The others probably thought this pair of siblings was sick. Their expressions were complex as they glanced at them, then stopped paying attention and went ahead to find flowers on their own.
Bai Youwei held it for a while. When Shen Mo didn’t eat, her arm got sore, so she withdrew her hand and ate that lotus seed herself, looking a bit unhappy.
Shen Mo asked, “Aren’t you afraid of violating the rules?”
“I picked the lotus pod, not the flower. What’s there to fear?” She dismissed it with a pout. “Besides, isn’t there still the puzzle piece?”
Shen Mo was at a loss with her. He shook his head and continued forward.
Bai Youwei wheeled herself to catch up, asking curiously, “Which one are you planning to pick?”
Shen Mo’s gaze casually surveyed both sides of the path, saying lightly, “There are 450,000 flower species worldwide. Even roughly categorized, there are five thousand. Finding the ten most beautiful from so many flowers is unrealistic in itself. However…”
He bent down and picked a bright pink flower from the flower cluster. The petals were layered like a princess’s skirt—gorgeous, magnificent, vivid and dripping.
“The peony has been renowned as the king among flowers since ancient times. Few flowers can compare. Choosing a peony should have relatively good odds.”
“Wow… Big brother, what you said makes so much sense.” Bai Youwei looked at the flower in his hands. “But, I think what you’re holding seems to be a herbaceous peony.”
“…” Shen Mo raised an eyebrow, looking at her. “It’s a herbaceous peony?”
Bai Youwei: “Mm, it’s a herbaceous peony.”
Shen Mo: “Then what does a tree peony look like?”
Bai Youwei thought about it. “Actually, it’s pretty much the same as this.”
“Then that’s fine.” Shen Mo picked up the wheelchair. “Let’s go back.”
