Lu Yuwen laughed, “Manman, if you follow a line like that with a consolation speech, it does make me feel a little tragic.”
Su Man said with amusement, “What consolation speech? I compliment you and you’re still not happy?”
“It’s not a consolation speech?” He tightened his grip on her hand slightly and continued walking forward. “Then I’m relieved.”
Why relieved?
What was he relieved about?
Su Man walked along with his pace, the corners of her lips curved upward.
She glanced down at the two shadows merged together on the ground — inseparable, intimate — and felt a sweetness bloom in her heart. She thought that being with him felt especially, wonderfully right.
Just then, a commotion suddenly broke out among the crowd behind them.
Su Man and Lu Yuwen both turned to look, and saw an electric motorcycle come surging out of nowhere — heedless of the crowd, moving at full speed!
Then a woman’s scream: “Stop him! He stole my bag!!!”
Su Man’s expression changed in an instant!
A robbery?!
Without a second thought, she lifted her foot and gave chase!
But even at her fastest, she could never outrun a motorcycle! Seizing the moment when the thief was briefly slowed by the crowd, Su Man grabbed a bottle of mineral water from a bystander’s hands and hurled it at the motorcycle with full force!
She was strong, and her aim was accurate. A full bottle of mineral water was no small weight, and it connected squarely with the side of the man’s head. His head jerked to one side and he toppled off the motorcycle!
Before he could scramble up, Su Man was already standing over him, jaw set. She grabbed him and twisted his arms behind his back, pinning him to the ground, and barked, “Let’s see you run now!”
The thief unleashed a string of profanities.
Su Man’s temper flared. She applied pressure, and there was a wrenching crack — the man immediately howled in agony!
That sounded like a dislocation.
“……” Su Man felt a little awkward. She’d accidentally used too much force again.
She wanted to let go, but was afraid he’d flee — so she held her position.
She looked up and surveyed her surroundings. People had come crowding in from all sides, and quite a few of them were applauding her.
It felt good, giving her a satisfying sense of having delivered justice. Su Man, with the bearing of a true heroine, smiled at the crowd and said, “Could someone call the police? I can’t free up my hands.”
“I’ll make the call!” A burly man in the crowd immediately raised his hand.
A nearby vendor also voluntarily offered up a length of rope to tie the thief’s hands and feet.
After all of that was done, the woman whose bag was stolen finally caught up.
She was a middle-aged woman of rather round build, panting and drenched in sweat. She gripped Su Man’s hand and thanked her over and over again: “Thank you so much, thank you so much, I really don’t know how to thank you enough……”
Delivering justice felt exhilarating, but being thanked afterward left her feeling awkward. She modestly said it was nothing, while her eyes swept through the crowd in search of Lu Yuwen.
From some point a while back, she hadn’t seen him at all.
Su Man began to feel a little uneasy.
There were so many people here — could Lu Yuwen have gotten separated from her?
She pushed through the crowd and retraced her steps to look for him, and after walking a stretch, she spotted Lu Yuwen.
He was leaning against the railing for support, bent forward slightly, one hand resting on his knee — his posture looked a bit off.
Su Man jogged over, “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing, I twisted my ankle a little.” Lu Yuwen looked up, eyes scanning her up and down with concern, “What about you? Are you alright?”
“I’m fine!” Su Man laughed, with a hint of pride. “I took that guy down in one move!”
Lu Yuwen was infected by her delight and laughed as well. “You might even get a commendation banner for this.”
Su Man stuck out her tongue with a playful air. “Better not — that would be embarrassing. Let’s go, I don’t want any credit for doing a good deed~”
She looped her arm through Lu Yuwen’s. “Come on, I’ll help you to the car.”
Lu Yuwen didn’t move.
Bracing against the railing, he paused for a moment, then said slowly, “Manman — would it be alright if you went ahead to flag down a car, and waited for me by the road?”
