Chapter 55: Young Ladies, Please Enter

The gatekeeper boy’s face was cold as he stretched out his hand to block them. “Young ladies, stop right there.”

Luo Sheng’s tone was calm, without a trace of earthly fire. “What is the meaning of this?”

The gatekeeper boy pointed at the number token in her hand, the corners of his mouth holding a mocking smile. “I just saw that the young lady’s number token was obtained from someone else.”

“And so?”

“And so the young ladies cannot enter. This number token wasn’t obtained from my hand.” The gatekeeper boy said with a stern face.

Luo Yue glared angrily at the gatekeeper boy. “You’re bullying people!”

A fourteen or fifteen-year-old young lady with a sweet, clear voice—even when losing her temper, she couldn’t frighten anyone.

The gatekeeper boy wasn’t afraid in the least and retorted, “How would a mere gatekeeper like me dare bully the young lady? I’m merely following the divine physician’s rules. Young lady, please don’t make things difficult for a gatekeeper.”

“You—” Luo Yue was so angry smoke seemed to pour from all seven orifices. Her lips trembling, she didn’t know how to refute him.

With so many people watching, if she continued arguing, it would only make the Grand Marshal’s estate appear to be bullying people with their power.

The young girl had already heard sneering laughter from the crowd behind her. For a moment she couldn’t help the tears that began spinning in her eyes.

“Stand behind me.” A cold, clear voice rang out.

Luo Yue turned her head and saw a face covered in frost.

“Third sister—” Luo Yue called out reflexively, and this address of “third sister” came out extraordinarily smoothly.

Luo Sheng didn’t rush to argue with the gatekeeper boy, frowning as she admonished Luo Yue. “If your tongue is clumsy, speak less.”

Luo Yue’s face flushed bright red, but this time she didn’t talk back. In fact, when she saw Luo Sheng’s gaze turn toward the gatekeeper boy, she inexplicably felt a trace of anticipation.

After returning from Jinsha, Luo Sheng had become both quick-tongued and fierce—this annoying gatekeeper boy definitely wouldn’t be a match for her!

The gatekeeper boy, locked under Luo Sheng’s calm-as-water gaze, immediately became vigilant. “Young ladies, please return. Don’t delay others seeking medical treatment.”

This young lady was much bolder than the previous one—she dared to ask Prince Kaiyang for his number token.

Although the gatekeeper boy wasn’t very old, he was quite clever at identifying troublemakers. After all, the divine physician’s gate wasn’t easy to guard, and over these days he’d seen all sorts of people.

Luo Sheng calmly observed the gatekeeper boy until his eyes began to dodge, then finally spoke. “You just saw that the number token in my hand was obtained from someone else?”

“The young lady asked Prince Kaiyang for it. Everyone present can testify to this.” The gatekeeper boy thought Luo Sheng wanted to deny the fact that she’d obtained the number token from Wei Han, and contempt appeared in his eyes.

This young lady, though bold, wasn’t clever. To try to deny something done in front of everyone—this was just foolish boldness.

“That’s correct. I can be this witness.” Zhu Hanshuang said coldly.

She shouldn’t have taken the lead in this, but Luo Sheng had actually thrown herself at Prince Kaiyang right in front of her—it was truly unbearable.

She wasn’t kicking someone when they were down, but eliminating a public menace!

Thinking this, Zhu Hanshuang couldn’t help but straighten her back.

But Luo Sheng didn’t give her even a glance. She raised the corners of her lips at the gatekeeper boy who was performing as if unafraid of power. “Did the divine physician truly establish a rule that the thirty number tokens distributed each day are person-specific and non-transferable?”

The gatekeeper boy’s attention was entirely focused on the four words “person-specific number.” He hesitated for a moment before nodding. “That’s correct!”

He’d insist on this—what could she do about it?

In any case, one thing was certain: the divine physician detested people from the Grand Marshal’s estate.

Even the Emperor was polite and respectful to the divine physician. As long as he had the divine physician’s backing, he had nothing to fear.

“Are you certain?”

“Naturally certain.” The gatekeeper boy revealed an impatient expression.

Luo Sheng raised the number token in her hand. “Then please tell me—what number token did you give Prince Kaiyang?”

The gatekeeper boy’s expression changed, and he immediately became evasive.

At the time, he’d merely grabbed a number token at random to distribute. How would he have paid attention to which number he gave Prince Kaiyang?

After all, the claim about person-specific numbers was something he’d made up to put off the Luo estate, not actually true.

“You don’t remember what number you gave Prince Kaiyang, so what about this Miss Zhu’s?”

“It’s—” The gatekeeper boy was so anxious sweat broke out on his forehead.

Zhu Hanshuang quickly glanced at her number token and interjected, “It’s number eighteen.”

The gatekeeper boy breathed a sigh of relief. “Right, it’s number eighteen!”

“You clearly didn’t know—” Luo Yue couldn’t help but interject again.

This time, without Luo Sheng needing to say anything, Luo Qing stopped her, saying in a low voice, “Fourth sister, let’s listen to third sister.”

There was no helping it—they weren’t good at this kind of arguing with people.

Luo Sheng seemed not to care at all about this utterly obvious cheating, saying leisurely, “So that means Prince Kaiyang’s number token is—”

“Number nineteen!” The gatekeeper boy blurted out.

He remembered clearly—Miss Zhu and Prince Kaiyang had arrived one after the other. Since Miss Zhu’s number token was eighteen, Prince Kaiyang’s must be nineteen.

Luo Sheng clapped her hands. “Correct answer.”

The gatekeeper boy was momentarily bewildered.

How had Miss Luo become his ally?

The gatekeeper boy was puzzling over this when he saw the young lady with her indifferent expression suddenly pull out the long whip wrapped around her waist and crack it against the ground.

The loud sound of the whip striking the ground immediately lifted everyone’s spirits. Whether they were purely watching the spectacle or had obtained tokens and were walking inside, all stopped moving.

The gatekeeper boy’s face turned pale as he questioned with outward strength masking inner weakness, “In front of the divine physician, does the young lady still want to strike people?”

Luo Sheng’s face was covered in frost as she questioned back, “The divine physician distributes thirty number tokens per day. Today the Luo estate’s carriage arrived only one step behind Prince Kaiyang, so I must ask—if the number token given to Prince Kaiyang was number nineteen, why were there no number tokens left when we arrived? Did you, this gatekeeper, deliberately make things difficult for us?”

The gatekeeper boy hurriedly defended himself. “I didn’t—”

“You didn’t? Then why did you withhold the remaining number tokens instead of distributing them to us, even making up the excuse about non-transferability? If they truly are person-specific numbers, you can’t even remember who got which number—how can you implement person-specific numbering?”

The young lady spoke both quickly and with clear logic. The gatekeeper boy was immediately questioned until his head felt as large as a bushel, unable to find words to defend himself.

Luo Sheng gripped her long whip and stepped forward, her tone becoming even more severe. “Tell me—is it that the divine physician’s established rules can be changed on a whim, or have you deliberately made things difficult?”

The gatekeeper boy’s expression changed drastically. “The rules established by the divine physician naturally cannot be changed!”

Most people coming to seek medical treatment were either wealthy or noble. Getting such a group to follow the rules had involved upheaval at first, and now that everyone finally consciously obeyed, how could word spread that they could be randomly changed?

If that happened, the rules wouldn’t count as rules anymore.

If the divine physician learned he’d ruined the established rules, he would definitely sweep him out the door!

The gatekeeper boy immediately panicked.

Luo Sheng flicked her whip as casually as an ordinary young lady of a great house would flick her handkerchief, saying indifferently, “My sisters and I have sincere filial hearts, coming with genuine intent to seek medical treatment for our father. Since the divine physician’s established rules won’t change, please tell everyone present—what exactly are the rules?”

The gatekeeper boy’s expression turned ashen, his lips trembling. Finally, he bent at the waist, lowered his head, and stepped aside. “This humble one was momentarily confused. Young ladies, please enter.”
