Chapter 164: Bitter Tea

Wei Han rose leisurely, “Then this prince shall go to your esteemed daughter’s quarters.”

Esteemed daughter?

Grand Commander Luo’s temples throbbed.

You know she’s my daughter, yet you’re going on a rendezvous so openly and brazenly in front of her own father?

If it were anyone else, Grand Commander Luo would have had them killed on the spot, but this person happened to be Prince Kaiyang.

Suppressing his anger, Grand Commander Luo asked Kou’er, “What does your young lady want the prince to come over for?”

Kou’er smiled cheerfully, “The young lady is inviting His Highness to see Big White.”

Big White?

Grand Commander Luo narrowed his eyes and thought for a moment before reacting, “The white goose Sheng’er keeps?”

Kou’er nodded.

Grand Commander Luo slowly turned to Wei Han, asking in an incredulous tone, “Your Highness is going to look at a goose?”

Wei Han’s face and heart remained unmoved, “Since your esteemed daughter has invited me, this prince may as well go take a look.”

Was he looking at a goose? He was looking at a curative medicine.

Grand Commander Luo fell silent, thinking to himself: A dignified prince running to his manor to see his daughter’s pet white goose—what kind of person was this?

“Grand Commander, this prince will head over now.”

“Uh—” Grand Commander Luo responded vaguely, watching Wei Han’s departure with very complicated feelings.

On the table, the tea had already gone cold. Only then did Grand Commander Luo come back to his senses.

No, he had to follow and see.

Walking into the courtyard, Grand Commander Luo changed his mind again.

Better not to go—it was rare for Sheng’er to calmly invite a man over, rare for a man to willingly keep the appointment…

Thinking about it felt rather heartbreaking. Grand Commander Luo sighed.

It wouldn’t be appropriate for him to go, but he could send Ying’er and the others to take a look.

Grand Commander Luo immediately instructed servants to fetch his three eldest daughters.

Before long, Luo Ying and her sisters arrived together.

“Father.” The three sisters all curtsied to Grand Commander Luo.

Grand Commander Luo swept his gaze over his three daughters and coughed lightly, “What were you all doing in your rooms?”

Luo Ying said, “Your daughter was embroidering a pillow cover.”

Embroidering a pillow cover?

Grand Commander Luo frowned upon hearing this, “What are you embroidering a pillow cover for? Don’t the embroiderers we keep in the manor have good skills?”

He remembered that one embroiderer had even been brought from the south and was quite famous in that region.

Luo Ying’s cheeks flushed slightly as she remained silent.

Luo Yue smiled, “Father has forgotten—eldest sister is getting married soon. She’s embroidering her trousseau.”

“Fourth sister—” Luo Ying gave Luo Yue a reproachful glance.

Grand Commander Luo suddenly realized, “Right, Ying’er is getting married soon.”

His gaze toward Luo Ying immediately became infinitely loving, his heart filled with emotion.

Not easy at all—finally one daughter was getting married.

“Embroider one or two items yourself, then have the embroiderers do the rest.”

Luo Ying acknowledged with a “yes.”

“What about you two?”

“Your daughter was practicing the zither.” Luo Qing said.

Luo Yue said cheerfully, “Your daughter was kicking the shuttlecock.”

All so well-behaved.

Grand Commander Luo was somewhat moved and said, “You three shouldn’t always stay cooped up at home. Feel free to go browse the silver shops when you have nothing to do—”

At this point, he suddenly remembered, “Oh right, Sheng’er opened a tavern on Qingxing Street. Did you know?”

The three nodded in unison, “Your daughter knows.”

“You know—” Grand Commander Luo stroked his short beard, somewhat surprised.

He had thought his three daughters didn’t know.

“Then you can go try it. The taste is especially good.”

Before the Grand Commander, the three sisters were all obedient and said in unison, “We’ve tried it.”

Tried—it?

This time, Grand Commander Luo wasn’t just surprised. He asked repeatedly, “When did you try it? Did the three of you go together?”

The three sisters exchanged glances, and Luo Ying stepped forward.

“Not long after the tavern opened, we heard third sister mention it, so we all went to eat. We’ve been several more times since…”

Several more times?

Grand Commander Luo suddenly felt a tightness in his chest.

Why did he have the illusion that everyone had already eaten there?

While he—he had only eaten there for the first time last night!

Most heartbreaking was that because Sheng’er wouldn’t charge him, it would be awkward to go again in the future, and takeout food always tasted somewhat inferior.

Forget it, better not continue this topic.

“A guest came to Sheng’er’s place today, saying he came to see her pet Big White. You all should go take a look too.”

The three sisters looked at each other.

Father’s suggestion was somewhat odd—did he want them to go see the guest or see Big White?

Still, Luo Ying asked, “May we know the guest’s identity?”

“Uh, it’s Prince Kaiyang.” Grand Commander Luo said casually.

The three sisters paused, none of them saying a word.

“Hurry along now.” Grand Commander Luo waved his hand grandly, dismissing his daughters.

He wasn’t very accustomed to interacting with his delicate, gentle daughters.

Outside the courtyard gate, Luo Ying stopped.

“You two younger sisters go. I still have one flower left to embroider.” After speaking, Luo Ying lifted her feet and left.

Luo Qing gave Luo Yue a gentle smile, “Fourth sister, you go take a look. I haven’t practiced that piece thoroughly yet, and teacher will test me on it later.”

“Second sister—” Seeing Luo Qing just leave like that, Luo Yue helplessly twitched her mouth.

Her two sisters certainly ran away quickly. Did they think she would go?

She’d rather return to her courtyard and continue kicking the shuttlecock—at least that would exercise her body. What was the point of going to third sister’s place to join the excitement?

Was a man more attractive to look at, or was a goose?

Even if both were attractive, neither belonged to her, so what was there to see?

Luo Yue efficiently returned to her room.

As for Father’s instructions—Father was busy and would forget about it in no time.

Wei Han was led by Kou’er into Xianyun Courtyard. They didn’t linger in the main courtyard but passed through the moon gate into the west side courtyard.

In the courtyard, tree canopies spread like umbrellas. By the stone table, a plainly dressed figure appeared somewhat languid.

Wei Han stopped and called out, “Miss Luo.”

Luo Sheng stood up, smiling, “Has Your Highness finished tea with my father?”

“Finished.” Wei Han walked over, his peripheral vision scanning the courtyard.

He didn’t see any sign of that white goose.

“Shi Yan and the others are accompanying Big White for a stroll in the garden to aid digestion.” Luo Sheng explained, then poured Wei Han a cup of tea. “Please wait a moment, Your Highness.”

A goose needed people to accompany it for a stroll in the garden?

Wei Han silently sipped his tea.

The tea had a unique fragrance and a slightly astringent taste.

Beside the celadon teapot sat a porcelain dish containing four colors of pastries.

Jade green, pale purple, goose yellow, and light pink—the colors were enticing, yet the shapes were simple, those plump and round little pastries.

As if poking them would make sweet filling flow out, yet one couldn’t tell what was inside.

These pastries hadn’t been seen at the tavern.

Wei Han decorously drank his tea, this thought flashing by.

Luo Sheng pushed the pastry dish toward Wei Han, politely saying, “Your Highness, please try the pastries. They pair perfectly with clear tea.”

“No need. I don’t much care for sweets.” Wei Han politely declined.

“I see.” Luo Sheng pulled the plate back and picked up a jade-green pastry. “Then I’ll eat them.”

When the jade-green pastry was bitten open, a faint sweet and sour flavor wafted out, revealing amber-colored filling inside.

Luo Sheng ate the pastry, wiped the corners of her mouth, and smiled, “There’s a bit of green plum jam inside, so it’s not too cloying.”

After explaining, she picked up a light pink pastry.

Fair, almost translucent slender fingertips, a pleasingly pink pastry—no one would doubt the pastry’s deliciousness.

Wei Han expressionlessly drank his bitter tea water, finally hearing movement from the moon gate.
