Chapter 277: Lan Shi (Part 5)

Jiang Xiyun awkwardly lowered the bowl and forced a smile, saying, “Big Cousin makes a good point.” She had no choice but to first toast Mother Jiang and Madam Qin before returning to toast Lin Jinlou. Lin Jinlou didn’t refuse this time, accepting the cup and drinking it all.

Jiang Feiyu’s eyes flickered as she smiled, “Now that you’ve had this drink, Big Cousin, shouldn’t you show your appreciation?”

Before she finished speaking, Lin Dongxiu, holding her tea, said deliberately, “Elder Sister Jiang’s words aren’t reasonable. Poetry is poetry, and needlework is needlework – how can they be mixed? Big Sister and Second Sister were the judges, but they never declared Fifth Cousin the winner.”

Once Lin Dongxiu spoke up, Tan Luhua could no longer contain herself and sneered, “Well, this is rich. Tomorrow I might as well have someone pass me notes with a hundred poems written for me, and try to gain false fame by deceiving others. Do you think people can’t see through that?” Her voice was neither loud nor soft.

Everyone was startled. Madam Qin immediately set her teacup down with a thud on the table. Mother Jiang started, clutching her prayer beads tightly. Jiang Feiyu and Jiang Xiyun’s faces flushed red instantly. Xianglan was also surprised but merely lifted her eyelids briefly before looking away. For a moment, no one responded.

Jiang Xiyun knew this was because she had offended Tan Luhua, who was now trying to expose her. She forced a loud laugh and said, “What are you saying, Second Sister-in-law?”

Tan Luhua replied with a mocking smile, “Fifth Cousin should know best. Why ask me what I mean?”

Lin Dongwan and Lin Dongxiu had seen Jiang Feiyu passing notes earlier, and now hearing Tan Luhua’s pointed remarks, they understood perfectly but maintained neutral expressions, looking down to adjust their skirt pleats. Those unaware looked at each other in confusion, while the clever ones had already figured out most of what was happening. Mother Jiang closed her eyes briefly, her prayer beads moving even faster through her fingers.

Jiang Xiyun secretly regretted her actions. She had always looked down on pursuits like poetry, never seriously studying them. In her usual gatherings with young ladies, they would just drink tea and chat. She was good at pleasant conversation and was usually the most popular wherever she went. Who knew the Lin family would have a poetry society? She could handle questions about the Four Books and Five Classics, but poetry and prose were her weaknesses. With all the young ladies composing poems, she felt it would be inappropriate to refuse, especially in this setting – performing poorly would bring shame to the family. If she had known this would happen, she wouldn’t have accepted Jiang Feiyu’s note earlier, but now she was trapped in an impossible situation.

Jiang Feiyu was internally furious but kept smiling as she tried to smooth things over. She poured tea for Tan Luhua, saying, “Second Sister-in-law, please have some tea. Your poetic talent is excellent – I was impressed the moment I saw your poem. I heard you also play the zither and are skilled at backgammon. We must play a game later.”

Lin Dongwan, seeing the displeased expressions of Mother Jiang and Madam Qin, was always quick to read the room. She turned her thoughts around and smiled, “Let’s stop talking about poetry and verses – even reading them gives me a headache. Even if one can recite a hundred poems, how can that compare to practical windproof knee guards? Big Brother, don’t try to dodge – you should properly thank Fifth Cousin.”

This back-and-forth would normally have been enough to settle things, but Tan Luhua wasn’t one to back down easily, especially with her pent-up anger toward Jiang Xiyun. She let out a light laugh and said, “How wonderful. Big Brother, regardless of who’s the champion or third place, hurry and give your jade pendant from the Crown Prince to Fifth Cousin.” She turned to Xianglan and continued, “What nonsense trinkets – it doesn’t matter if we don’t get them. Come to my room later. Although I don’t have any famous Fujian tea or magnolia pendants, I can still offer a cup of plain tea, a simple zither, and old books to entertain guests. It’s not as grand, but at least it’s peaceful. Some people use tea to show filial piety or curry favor with others, leaving only our Second Master without a face. Sister Xianglan, please don’t be like others and look down on us.”

Lin Dongxiu spoke softly, “Second Sister-in-law mustn’t show favoritism. I’ll come later too. I have two new jars of tea that I’ll bring for you.”

As these two played off each other, Xianglan became uncomfortable. She glanced up and saw Mother Jiang’s extremely displeased expression and Madam Qin’s cold demeanor. She wanted to look at Lin Jinlou but restrained herself.

The situation was extremely awkward. Even the eloquent Jiang Feiyu didn’t know how to respond. Cold sweat formed on Jiang Xiyun’s palms, but despite her cleverness, she steadied herself, gritted her teeth, and stood up. She gave a slight curtsy and said, “I don’t deserve this pendant. When writing the poem, Big Sister said my use of classical references was crude, so she specifically pointed out some things… I… I…” Her face turned red, showing apparent shame. She glanced at Xianglan and blinked her large eyes, saying, “Sister Xianglan wrote much better, excelling in imagery with a unique flavor – I’m simply less skilled.” Then to Tan Luhua, she said, “Second Sister-in-law is right, this was my fault.” By lightly mentioning help with one classical reference and showing a sincere attitude in admitting her mistake, she effectively silenced everyone – the further pursuit of the matter would be unreasonable.

Mother Jiang was greatly satisfied, her expression softening. Madam Qin nodded and said, “It’s just one poem, sisters playing around – it shouldn’t be taken too seriously.”

Lin Dongxiu smiled sweetly, “Indeed, it’s just one poem. To compete over who’s better or worse, using whatever means – it’s rather ridiculous.” Lin Dongxiu was skilled at verbal sparring, hiding barbs in gentle words, more sophisticated than Tan Luhua.

Tan Luhua, still angry, laughed and said, “Fourth Sister speaks truly. These are all trivial matters, but we haven’t been blessed with clever tongues. Some people can justify showing favoritism when giving gifts with elaborate explanations, while clumsy speakers like us can only drink the northwest wind.”

Jiang Xiyun was furious inside, knowing that Xiu and Tan were simply jealous of her. Since her arrival at the Lin family, Lin Dongxiu had always spoken to her with underlying sourness, all because she was to be engaged to Lin Jinlou, while Lin Dongxiu, though marrying into nobility, was betrothed to a widower nearing forty. Tan Luhua had reluctantly married into the Lin family, only to wed a sickly concubine-born son.

She had already lowered her head and admitted her fault – what more could they want from her in such a situation?

Mother Jiang’s face was dark as water, but it would be inappropriate for her to intervene now, so she could only worry silently. Madam Qin merely stirred her tea leaves with the lid. Lin Jinlou seemed asleep, not making a sound.

Xianglan could see that Madam Qin was displeased with Tan Luhua’s relentless pursuit. Though she disliked Tan Luhua’s self-importance and opportunistic nature, the woman had shown some loyalty and possessed some learning. After several interactions, Xianglan felt that Tan Luhua truly had some genuine character and didn’t want to see her fall out with Madam Qin over this. Moreover, regardless of whether Jiang Xiyun married into the family, she didn’t wish to be at odds with her. Now was a good time to show weakness, so she smiled and said, “When Second Madam invited me earlier, I must go – you couldn’t drive me away if you tried. I’ve long heard about your fine zither, part of your dowry, and have wanted to try it but never had the chance. However, just us few would be dull – it’s better if everyone joins. Miss Xiyun’s sister merely helped her with one classical reference, and though it wasn’t quite proper, her final couplet showed real spirit – everyone saw that. Miss Xiyun’s admission of being less skilled shows her broad-mindedness. What’s good or bad is in the eye of the beholder. Take a flower, for instance – Du Fu, when sorrowful, wrote ‘Moved by the times, flowers splash tears; Grieving at parting, birds startle the heart,’ but when happy, wrote ‘Late sun adorns mountains and rivers; Spring breeze perfumes flowers and grass.’ The bold prefer ‘The Great River flows east,’ while the delicate favor ‘Small bridges and flowing water.’ So while Second Madam thinks my writing is good, others prefer Miss Xiyun’s – it’s all quite natural.” Seeing Tan Luhua about to speak, she quietly tugged at her sleeve and smiled, “I often hear others speak of Second Madam’s father, Master Tan, as an upright official who wouldn’t tolerate injustice, and once offended his superiors due to his straightforward nature – truly having the bearing of a famous minister. Now meeting Second Madam, I see the reputation is well-deserved. In the end, this is all just a misunderstanding.” She continued with a faint smile, “Unlike me, coming from a humble servant family, eager to show off the few characters I know, making Aunt and Madam laugh at me. Compared to the madams and young ladies, I’m truly shallow.”

After these words, everyone was first stunned, then surprised, before falling silent.

From the corner of her eye, Xianglan caught Lin Jinlou’s sharp black eyes half-closed, looking her way, but she avoided his gaze, keeping her head lowered.

Summer Lady had been sitting alone in the shade by the rockery, where a separate table was set with fine tea and fruits. She had been watching quietly, occasionally sipping tea, until she heard Xianglan’s words. She paused and sat up straight, looking at Xianglan, thinking to herself: “Good, well done, Xianglan. I always thought her character was different, and indeed her actions are unlike others. If it were someone else in her awkward position, they would either gloat or pretend to be invisible. Unexpectedly, she spoke such words, praising Jiang Xiyun’s poetry and helping her save face, explaining the principle of ‘different perspectives’ to help Madam and others save face, then praising Tan’s family’s uprightness to help her save face, and finally concluding with ‘misunderstanding’ to resolve everything. Layer by layer, truly watertight. Most remarkable is that someone of her character could then humble herself, lowering her position to elevate others, saving everyone’s face – truly extraordinary! Pity that someone of her quality was born a servant; it’s like a bright pearl cast into darkness. If she had even a slightly more respectable background, how could she end up as a concubine? Indeed, everything in this world has its flaws.” She kept shaking her head as she thought.

Jiang Xiyun was startled and properly looked at Xianglan, seeing her calm demeanor and elegant bearing. She had always thought herself clever at hiding her shrewdness, appearing simple while being cunning inside, merely pretending to be foolish. She believed that if she chose to compete, others would have no chance against her. But this Chen Xianglan… wrote the best poem yet received the coldest treatment. Despite their delicate relationship, she couldn’t help but feel pity. Yet not only did Chen Xianglan maintain her composure, she spoke such words – Jiang Xiyun questioned herself, wondering if she could have handled it more skillfully in the same situation. This Chen Xianglan appeared to be on good terms with both Tan Luhua and Lin Dongxiu, and these two had repeatedly needled her today – could Xianglan have been behind it?

Jiang Xiyun’s heart skipped a beat, suddenly feeling unsettled.

Lin Dongwan gave a dry laugh and said, “Sister Xianglan speaks well. Fifth Cousin is broad-minded, and Second Sister-in-law is proper – both deserve praise.” She turned to Xianglan with a smile, “Your poem was also excellent.” As she spoke, others quickly agreed.

Lin Dongyi gave Xianglan a wink and secretly gave a thumbs up inside her sleeve, smiling cheerfully, “Xianglan makes sense. I still prefer her poem.”

Madam Qin’s expression improved somewhat, showing a smile as she cast complex glances at Xianglan. Tan Luhua, being clever, understood Xianglan’s intention and felt grateful, quietly reaching out to squeeze Xianglan’s hand. Lin Dongxiu was momentarily speechless – if she were Xianglan, she would have hoped for the situation to become even more chaotic. She never expected Xianglan to speak such words, especially the self-deprecating conclusion. If it were her, she could never have said it. If Xianglan’s life-saving act at the temple had earned her some respect, now she truly felt warmth towards Xianglan from the bottom of her heart, mixed with some pity.

Jiang Feiyu watched Xianglan, her brows slightly furrowed in thought. Jiang Xiyun could no longer think too much about it and forced a sweet, innocent smile, saying, “I’m young and foolish, doing many things improperly. I need my sisters’ guidance.”

Mother Jiang quickly interjected, her face darkening, “Xiyan! You were wrong in this matter. Writing poetry is just for fun – why create such trouble!”

Jiang Xiyun seized the opportunity, sitting beside Mother Jiang and holding her head like a chubby squirrel, saying sweetly, “Grandmother, I was wrong. Please don’t scold me.” Her manner was both obedient and playful, making it hard for anyone to remain critical. Even Lin Dongyi couldn’t help but burst out laughing.

Mother Jiang tapped Jiang Xiyun’s forehead, saying, “You troublesome child! No wonder they say you’re silly and foolish!”

Seeing everyone’s expressions softening, Jiang Xiyun became even more animated, saying coquettishly, “Grandmother, what are you saying? Didn’t you praise me for being clever and beautiful just last night? Now you’ve changed your tune – I won’t accept this!”

Lin Dongwan and others couldn’t help laughing, saying, “Fifth Cousin has always been lively, both witty and amusing.”

Jiang Danyun said coolly, “Yes, she’s always been sharp-tongued.” Seeing Mother Jiang’s warning glare, she fell silent.

Seeing the matter about to pass, Jiang Xiyun breathed a sigh of relief and further diverted the conversation. She smiled shyly at Lin Jinlou, “These knee guards were meant to show my appreciation to Big Cousin. I hope Big Cousin won’t mind the crude needlework.”

Lin Jinlou smiled, “How could I mind such a thoughtful gift from Fifth Cousin? Since you spent nights working on it by lamplight, I naturally must give something in return.” He paused before adding, “However, this pendant was meant for the winner. Though Fifth Cousin’s poetry was good, you did receive help, so I’m afraid you can’t have this pendant.”

Jiang Xiyun’s fair face turned bright red with embarrassment as she lowered her head to fiddle with her dress sash, showing an obedient appearance of acknowledging her mistake.

Lin Jinlou smiled, “I have a gold pearl ring that would be perfect for Fifth Cousin to wear.” He turned to Xianglan and said, “When we return, there are several pieces of silk, newly gifted from the shop this year – each sister should pick one.”

Jiang Xiyun stood to express thanks, her slight curtsy as flowing as clouds, quiet and elegant, her appearance delicate and beautiful.

Lin Jinlou stood up and beckoned to Xianglan, “Come here.”

Xianglan had no choice but to walk over. Lin Jinlou held up the pendant’s cord and extended it, saying, “Here, take it.”

Xianglan hesitated slightly, raising her eyes to look at Lin Jinlou. He was already showing impatience and reached out to take Xianglan’s small hand, placing the pendant in her palm, and saying, “Take it. Your poem was good – you deserve it.”

Xianglan also curtsied.

With the poetry judging concluded, Lin Jinlou took his leave to attend to guests in the front. Mother Jiang and Madam Qin, their mood spoiled by the earlier incident, left with their respective groups, leaving Tan Luhua to direct the maids in cleaning up. After Mother Jiang and Madam Qin had gone far enough, just as Xianglan was about to turn and leave, she heard someone say, “Sister Xianglan has such grace. Not only is your poetry excellent, but you handle matters so properly. I truly can’t compare.” Xianglan turned to see Jiang Xiyun standing beside her, wearing a bright smile.

At this moment, the summer breeze was gentle, the green trees cast thick shade, cicadas were chirping, and the rose trellis filled the garden with fragrance. Nearby, a large decorative jar held lotus plants, their buds about to bloom, jade-green leaves swaying in the wind.

Xianglan quietly observed Jiang Xiyun for a moment before smiling slightly, “Miss Xiyun flatters me. Miss Xiyun is clever and capable in countless ways. Someone simple and foolish like me can’t compare.”

Both women had crystal-clear hearts, knowing they were testing each other, so both held their positions. The maids saw them standing in the tree shade and pointed and whispered among themselves, not daring to approach.

Jiang Xiyun raised her eyebrows and suddenly spoke seriously, “Sister Xianglan is truly clever. Let’s speak frankly – you surely understand the elders’ intentions.”

Xianglan was surprised by Jiang Xiyun’s directness but maintained her gentle smile without speaking. Jiang Xiyun took a deep breath and said, “To be honest, Sister Xianglan has heavenly beauty and great talent. Among the ladies of noble families I’ve met, those who could match you can be counted on one hand.”

Jiang Xiyun deliberately praised Xianglan first, watching her reaction. Xianglan maintained a modest expression, smiling and saying, “Such praise from Miss Xiyun makes me truly embarrassed.”

Seeing Xianglan maintain her smile, Jiang Xiyun continued, “However, Sister Xianglan is disadvantaged by her birth. If you had been born into an official family, you wouldn’t be inferior to any of us. But because of this difference in status, no matter how much Big Cousin favors you, you can never be the primary wife. This is heaven’s arrangement, something beyond our control.”

Xianglan replied calmly, “Past lives and present, cause and effect – some are born to wealth and nobility, others to poverty and hardship. My humble birth is my fate, and I’ve never complained about it.”

Jiang Xiyun carefully watched Xianglan’s expression and said, “Since Sister Xianglan understands this, you must also know that the elders’ current intention centers on the word ‘marriage.’ With someone as precious as Sister Xianglan present, I honestly wouldn’t want to marry in, but my family faces difficulties. I’ve received my parents’ care for many years, and now when a girl’s duty is needed, and Uncle’s wife has chosen me – whether this succeeds or fails is another matter, that’s all there is to it.”

Xianglan looked up at Jiang Xiyun, whose dark, calm eyes were staring directly at her. Her fair face was as beautiful as March peach blossoms, the previous sweet laziness completely gone, replaced by determination and shrewdness. Xianglan paused before asking, “What would Miss Xiyun suggest?”

Jiang Xiyun sighed, “We girls don’t control our fate. Why must Sister Xianglan try to outdo me in everything? Even without Big Cousin’s involvement, ‘people live for dignity, as Buddha competes for incense’ – we of the Jiang family also care about face. I just want to live peacefully. If this matter doesn’t work out, I can be close friends with Sister Xianglan. If it does work out, we can still get along harmoniously. Why must we fight like roosters? Don’t you agree?”
