Vol 1 – Chapter 25: Making a Living with One’s Voice

“You know Teng Yi?” Wang Jing asked softly, watching Teng Yi’s retreating figure.

“Yes.”

“How did you meet?”

Ruan Yu glanced at Wang Jing.

Wang Jing quickly waved her hands: “I don’t mean anything by it, I’m just curious. Teng Yi has been mythologized at school; people like us usually don’t get the chance to know him.”

Before Ruan Yu could respond, they saw Tian Cheng beckoning to them.

“What are you two whispering about at the door? Come in quickly!”

They responded and immediately entered the office.

Tian Cheng took a sip of water, organized the documents on his desk, and then discussed the broadcasting station matters. The broadcasting times were divided between noon and 6 PM. Tian Cheng hoped Ruan Yu would handle the evening broadcast slot. Ruan Yu calculated – although the broadcasting time didn’t overlap with her tutoring job, she wouldn’t be able to make it to both. If she agreed to Tian Cheng’s arrangement, she would be late for her tutoring job.

Wang Jing noticed Ruan Yu’s dilemma and voluntarily offered to take the evening broadcast work. Tian Cheng didn’t agree immediately, instead asking Ruan Yu if she had any difficulties. Ruan Yu explained her situation honestly.

“Alright then. You’ll take the noon slot, and Wang Jing will handle the evening slot,” Tian Cheng was very understanding.

“Thank you, Teacher Tian.”

“No need for thanks, I’ll be counting on you both in the future,” Tian Cheng said, turning to Wang Jing. “You can go back now. Ruan Yu, please stay a moment, I have other things to discuss.”

“Okay.”

Wang Jing left the office, gently closing the door behind her.

The office suddenly held only the two of them. Tian Cheng gestured toward the sofa, indicating Ruan Yu should sit. She didn’t stand on ceremony. Throughout her freshman year, she worked in the publicity department, helping Tian Cheng handle various matters. While Tian Cheng kept her busy, he also took good care of her. Their relationship was both that of teacher and friend, quite close.

“Teacher Tian, what other instructions do you have?” Ruan Yu asked casually.

“You’ve already left my department, how can I give you instructions anymore?” Tian Cheng smiled.

“How can you say that? I’m not an ungrateful person. Rest assured, wherever I am, my phone is always ready for your call.”

“That mouth of yours – when you speak, you can charm anyone.”

“Of course, after all, I’m planning to make a living with my voice in the future.”

Tian Cheng’s smile deepened. After working with Ruan Yu for a year, he had figured out her personality. Although she usually maintained a serious demeanor like a mature adult, she was a proud young girl at heart.

“Teacher Tian, so what’s the matter?”

“It’s nothing.” Tian Cheng took out an envelope from his drawer and handed it to her. “This is for you, take it.”

The envelope was slightly open, revealing pink banknotes inside.

“Teacher Tian…”

“Remember what I told you at the beginning of the semester?”

Ruan Yu lowered her head, silent.

“You’re good in every other way, except you’re too proud. Didn’t I tell you to come to me if you had trouble with tuition?”

“There’s no trouble now, I’ve found a part-time job. The tuition gap isn’t much, I can make it up once I get paid,” Ruan Yu pushed the envelope back. “Thank you, Teacher Tian, I know you mean well, but I can’t accept this money.”

“It’s not a gift, just take it first and return it when you’re better off.”

“That won’t work either. No matter what, I can’t accept it.”
