Vol 1 – Chapter 50: Han Zuo

Chen Manbai poured out all her grievances against class monitor You Lexuan—about abusing power behind the scenes, making pointless comparisons, constantly tattling on classmates to get them in trouble… The list went on and on, leaving Cai Zhi in an awkward position.

After all, You Lexuan was the class monitor he had appointed, and the school nurse and Han Zuo were present.

Family shame shouldn’t be aired in public.

“Come, come, let’s talk outside! Don’t disturb the patient’s rest,” Cai Zhi pulled Chen Manbai and the others toward the door.

Han Zuo also wanted to leave, but the nurse called him back.

“Student.”

“Yes?”

“Go to the shop and buy an energy drink, Red Bull or something,” the nurse said.

Han Zuo hesitated: “Where’s the shop?”

“Aren’t you a Yang Shan student?”

“I’m from Hong Shang.”

“Oh, then I’ll go buy it. You stay here and watch her.”

“…”

Han Zuo wanted to say something, but the nurse had already hurried out, closing the door behind her.

Suddenly, only the two of them remained in the room.

Ruan Yu stared at the door, and Han Zuo noticed, immediately going to reopen it.

“It’s a bit stuffy,” he stood by the door, looking outside then back at Ruan Yu, making small talk.

“It is a bit stuffy,” Ruan Yu rubbed her nose.

Han Zuo looked around and opened the window too.

The wind rushed in, making the medicine shelves sway slightly.

Chen Manbai and the others were talking in the corridor, their voices muffled and unclear, but they seemed to be having an animated discussion.

“Thank you for today,” Ruan Yu said.

“You’re welcome,” Han Zuo walked a few steps toward her, hooked a chair with his foot, and sat down in front of her. “Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

“You look pale.”

“I’m fine.”

Han Zuo cleared his throat lightly, running out of conversation topics.

They sat facing each other in silence.

Ruan Yu secretly observed him.

The young man had very short crew-cut hair and a handsome face with distinguished features that lived up to his “campus heartthrob” title. In terms of looks alone, he indeed rivaled Teng Yi.

How were there so many good-looking people in this world?

“You’re Ruan Yu?” Han Zuo suddenly seemed to remember something.

“Yes.”

“I’m Han Zuo. I often hear my uncle talking about you at home.”

“Your uncle?” Ruan Yu couldn’t quite follow.

“Your homeroom teacher Cai Zhi is my uncle.”

Ruan Yu was stunned.

No wonder they seemed so familiar with each other on the field—there was this connection. Then, hadn’t she deceived his uncle right in front of him?

“Um…”

“It’s okay, I’ll keep your secret,” Han Zuo seemed to read her thoughts and smiled. “My uncle sometimes isn’t the best judge of character. But he likes you, he often praises you at home for being smart and hardworking, and tells me I’m stupid and should learn from your example.”

“Then you must be pretty stupid.”

“Huh?”

“If I were you, I’d seize this opportunity to let Uncle see the ‘good kid next door’s’ true colors.”

Han Zuo processed her words.

“You must find me quite annoying,” Ruan Yu looked at Han Zuo. “When I was little, the person I hated most was the older sister next door whom my dad always praised.”

“Is it too late for me to tattle now?” he asked with a straight face.

“You’ve already missed the best timing for confession. You should have exposed my lie the moment you discovered it. Now, we’re in the same boat.”

Han Zuo burst into genuine laughter.

With his hearty laugh, the awkward atmosphere that had lingered in the infirmary finally disappeared completely.
