In the early morning, just as a sliver of light appeared on the horizon, the melodious sound of the bedside alarm clock rang out.
After a rustling noise, Ruan Sixian drowsily opened her eyes, rubbed her forehead, got up, and walked to the window, pulling back a small gap in the curtains to look outside.
The sky was terrifyingly dark, with black clouds that seemed to hover right above their heads.
It looked like another day destined for delays.
Suddenly, there was the sound of clothing rustling behind her.
“You’re awake?”
Ruan Sixian turned around. “Aren’t you going to sleep a little longer?”
Fu Mingyu pulled back the covers and got out of bed, saying, “I’ll take you to the airport.”
“No need, no need.”
Ruan Sixian ran back in a few steps and pressed Fu Mingyu back onto the bed. “You came home so late yesterday, and you have nothing to do today. Sleep a bit longer. The driver can take me there.”
Fu Mingyu had never been one to oversleep. He just sat on the edge of the bed for a moment, watching as Ruan Sixian finished dressing, then still got up to join her in the bathroom.
“Are you meeting with Zhu Dong and the others this afternoon?”
Ruan Sixian spoke while brushing her teeth. “Don’t drink, okay?”
“Mm.”
Fu Mingyu took a towel and wiped the foam that had splashed onto her chest, saying, “I won’t. I’ll come home after dinner.”
“Mm.”
Ruan Sixian spat out the foam and said indistinctly, “It would be best if you’re already home when I get back and have changed clothes and showered. Don’t let me smell alcohol on you.”
After saying this, she rinsed her mouth and quickly ran downstairs.
When Fu Mingyu leisurely came downstairs, Ruan Sixian was already seated and eating breakfast.
The dining room chandelier was bright and warm, fresh flowers in the vase on the table were blooming vigorously, and the freshly ground soybean milk gave off a fragrant aroma. Without looking out the window, it felt as if it were a bright sunny day.
“I’m going to be late.”
Ten minutes later, Ruan Sixian stood up, and the housekeeper handed her hat and suitcase.
“Have a safe journey.”
Fu Mingyu got up to help adjust her collar, gently kissed her forehead, and said, “Let me know when you land.”
“I know.” Ruan Sixian pulled up her suitcase, tucked her hat under her arm, and walked out of the dining room, but couldn’t help turning back with a smile. “There will probably be delays today. If I come back late, don’t wait for me. Rest early.”
After she left, the housekeeper came to clear the dishes and casually remarked, “Madam has become gentler.”
Fu Mingyu looked at an aviation magazine and smiled without speaking.
Had she become gentler?
It seemed a bit so.
Especially at night.
After lunch, Fu Mingyu’s phone rang several times in succession.
Ten minutes earlier, the military news channel had announced the latest fighter jet. Besides the aviation information APP, WeChat has also exploded.
Fu Mingyu got up walked to the living room, and turned on the international news channel, which happened to be broadcasting this news.
He watched while buttoning his shirt.
The television screen was live-streaming the test flight site, with the host interviewing relevant experts, and explaining the details.
The housekeeper handed him his freshly ironed jacket. Fu Mingyu’s attention was entirely on the television as he took the jacket and stretched it back. Perhaps he used too much force, as he felt his jacket brush against something.
Then, from behind came the sound of something shattering.
At first, Fu Mingyu didn’t pay attention, his mind was still on the news.
It wasn’t until he had put on his jacket that he belatedly sensed something was wrong.
The volume of the television suddenly decreased. He turned around to see the housekeeper already cleaning up ceramic fragments on the floor.
“Oh dear, be careful, don’t step on them!”
Fu Mingyu lowered his eyes to stare at those fragments, and his brow suddenly twitched.
Oh no.
Ruan Sixian couldn’t be considered a dexterous woman, and she usually wasn’t good at making delicate things.
This mug was a gift she had made for him after four trips to the pottery studio, only succeeding on the last attempt.
She had told him that since he lacked nothing, she wanted to give him something from her heart, hoping he would think of her every time he drank water.
And now, he seemed to see his head shattered into pieces, scattered on the ground.
Inside the private room, flames burned in the European-style fireplace, making the whole room warm.
What should have been a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere was altered by the expressions on two people’s faces.
“What’s wrong with you two?”
Zhu Dong threw down the cards in his hand with an annoyed look. “It’s rare to have time to play cards, and we haven’t even settled the score yet. Why do you both look like you’ve lost hundreds of thousands?”
Yan An pushed his cards, looking gloomy without speaking.
Ji Yan wasn’t as annoyed as Zhu Dong, holding his teacup and chuckling, “His wife ran away again, how could he be happy?”
“Do you know how to talk?” Yan An sneered. “What do you mean by ‘wife ran away’? She’s abroad collecting inspiration—that’s work. How does that become ‘wife ran away’ in your mouth?”
Ji Yan smiled lightly, appearing unwilling to say more to Yan An, yet couldn’t help muttering, “Well, your wife sure loves to work. Out of three hundred and sixty-five days a year, she’s collecting inspiration for three hundred and sixty days.”
“What about you?” Ji Yan turned to look at Fu Mingyu. “What’s wrong with you today?”
Zhu Dong fidgeted with his phone, replying to his wife’s message while casually saying, “They must have fought. I bet he got kicked out today. I told you, not everyone can handle a wife like yours.”
Fu Mingyu glanced at him coolly. “Don’t talk nonsense. We’re very much in love. She’s flying today.”
“Empty room, wife in the sky.” Zhu Dong continued, “Looks like someone’s feeling lonely.”
Fu Mingyu couldn’t be bothered with Zhu Dong, but after Zhu Dong finished texting, he became interested and spoke with the air of someone who’d been in a ten-year love marathon, “Let me tell you, you shouldn’t talk too much with women. The more you talk, the more aggressive they get!”
From the tone, it seemed Zhu Dong was about to impart his years of experience in battling wits with his wife.
Although the two married men beside him maintained expressionless faces, their ears had quietly perked up.
At that moment, the sound of high heels approached, and then the private room door was pushed open.
Although the person hadn’t appeared yet, Zhu Dong’s keen sense of perception, honed over many years, would not allow him to misjudge.
After a two-second pause, Yan An couldn’t hold back any longer.
“Go on, continue.”
At this point, the hair on the back of Zhu Dong’s neck had already stood up, but his face remained calm with a hint of manufactured sincerity.
“Just kneel to your wife and all problems will be solved!”
“…”
“…”
Sure enough, there were delays today.
Waiting for flow control on the return flight had wasted a lot of time. By the time Ruan Sixian disembarked, it was almost eleven o’clock.
But she hadn’t expected Fu Mingyu to still come and pick her up.
After getting off the jet bridge, she pulled her suitcase and jogged over to him.
“Didn’t I say you didn’t need to come?” She held onto Fu Mingyu’s arm. “It’s so late, you should rest early.”
“It’s fine.” Fu Mingyu took her suitcase and helped tighten her scarf. “Are you tired?”
“A bit. We waited for a long time today.”
The crew members behind looked at them with envy.
How gentle and considerate CEO Fu was.
Back home, Ruan Sixian went to the bedroom to change clothes. When she came downstairs, she saw Fu Mingyu busy in the kitchen.
“What are you making?” Ruan Sixian walked over leisurely with her hands behind her back. “Chicken soup?”
“The housekeeper stewed chicken soup in the evening, saving it for your late-night snack.”
Fu Mingyu didn’t turn around, with his sleeves rolled up, methodically taking out kitchen utensils. “Porridge or noodles?”
“Noodles.” Ruan Sixian hugged Fu Mingyu from behind. “Aww, my husband is so good.”
Fu Mingyu smiled faintly, “Then remember my goodness.”
Don’t turn against me in a moment.
Ruan Sixian stood on her tiptoes, her chin resting on his shoulder. “Of course.”
What could be more wonderful than eating a midnight snack personally cooked by your husband on a cold winter night?
Ruan Sixian wasn’t particularly hungry originally, but once she smelled that fragrant aroma, she couldn’t resist eating it all.
She even wanted some more soup.
But the recent incident of a captain being grounded for exceeding weight limits was still fresh in her mind. No matter how tempted she was, she had to restrain her appetite.
“Are you sleepy?” Fu Mingyu asked. “Shall I run a bath for you?”
Ruan Sixian had been pacing in the living room to digest her food, but upon hearing the words “bath,” her steps suddenly halted. She raised her hand to brush her hair, hiding her slightly flushed cheeks.
She knew that feeding her so well late at night had ulterior motives.
“Um… I checked last night, and we’ve run out of that. Maybe tomorrow…”
“I was just, simply asking if you want to take a bath,” Fu Mingyu looked at her with sincere eyes. “Nothing else.”
“Oh, I didn’t mean anything else either. I was just saying we’re out of body lotion… But sure, I’ll bathe. How can a person not bathe? If there’s no body lotion, then so be it.”
The bathroom was filled with mist, and the slightly hot water temperature alleviated the fatigue of the day.
When Ruan Sixian stepped out of the bathtub loosely wrapped in a towel, Fu Mingyu happened to push the door open and walked to her side without a word.
Ruan Sixian only realized someone was standing in front of her when she looked up, giving her quite a fright. Her foot slipped, and she was about to fall back into the bathtub when Fu Mingyu swiftly caught her.
He managed to catch her, but the towel around her body slid to the floor.
The bathroom was already warm, and at that moment, it seemed to rise by several more degrees.
Fu Mingyu held her waist, his lips tightly pressed together, his Adam’s apple moving slightly.
“Why didn’t you say something when you came in?!”
Ruan Sixian saw the emotion in his eyes and immediately picked up the towel to wrap herself. “Are you trying to scare me to death so you can remarry?”
Watching her clutch her chest as she walked to the washbasin, still muttering under her breath, Fu Mingyu smiled helplessly, following behind her. Looking at the two of them in the mirror, he said, “What haven’t I seen before? What haven’t I touched before? Kissed—”
“Shut up.” Ruan Sixian tightened the towel and pushed him toward the door. “Get out, I need to dry my hair.”
“I’ll help you.”
Fu Mingyu took the hair dryer before she could, carefully helping her dry her hair.
The hair dryer was silent and not noisy.
Ruan Sixian lowered her head, her fingers tapping on the countertop, a faint smile at the corners of her mouth.
“I feel like you’re different today.”
Fu Mingyu’s hands paused. “How am I different? Aren’t I always like this?”
“I don’t know, just a feeling.” Ruan Sixian said, “A woman’s intuition is usually very accurate.”
Fu Mingyu: “…”
A woman’s intuition is so damn terrifying.
“No, there’s nothing.” Fu Mingyu ruffled her hair. “It’s late, let’s rest early.”
“But I find I’m not very sleepy after the bath. I want to go to the living room and watch TV for a while.”
“No, let’s go to bed.”
“I’m off tomorrow.”
“Even if you’re off, you should rest early. It’s almost twelve.”
After a confrontation, Ruan Sixian suddenly looked up, challenging Fu Mingyu’s gaze through the mirror.
There was something wrong—he was so eager to get her to bed.
“I already told you, I checked last night, and we’re out of that.”
“Hmm?”
Fu Mingyu stared at her intently, the thoughts he had suppressed now frantically resurfacing.
He put down the hair dryer, and wrapped his arms around Ruan Sixian’s waist, imperceptibly pulling down the towel, his voice deep, “I bought some today.”
“…”
Then why were you pretending earlier?!
With her towel half-hanging, Ruan Sixian was pinned against the washbasin by him. He held her chin, kissing her jawline from behind.
The mist in front of the mirror rose again, blurring the vision, revealing only two figures caught in passion.
After a long while, the atmosphere in the bathroom became suffocating. Ruan Sixian clung to Fu Mingyu’s shoulders, frowning tightly, “Not here, the floor is too slippery.”
Before she finished speaking, she was lifted into the air.
Although there were no neighbors around this house, and the towel had long since disappeared, being carried out like this still made Ruan Sixian somewhat embarrassed. She buried her head in his arms.
As Fu Mingyu passed through the second-floor living room, he glanced at a cabinet to one side. On top of it was a box containing ceramic fragments.
Outside the window, the night was thick, and the moon had quietly climbed out at some point, bringing a few strands of light to the room, and dispersing some of the heavy dampness.
Ruan Sixian lay on Fu Mingyu’s body, rested for a while, then mumbled, “What time is it?”
“Two o’clock.”
“I want to take another bath.”
“Mm.” Hearing this, Fu Mingyu lifted her.
“I’ll go myself.”
Ruan Sixian broke free. “You go to the other bathroom.”
Based on experience, they absolutely could not stay in the same bathroom at such times or tomorrow’s day off would be wasted.
So before Fu Mingyu could say anything, Ruan Sixian had already put on her nightgown and jumped out of bed.
Fu Mingyu sat up and turned on the light.
In the moment when the light suddenly came on, he heard Ruan Sixian calling him loudly from outside.
“…”
Fu Mingyu rubbed his eyebrow bone, took a deep breath, and got out of bed.
He leaned against the doorframe, looking as if he hadn’t fully woken up. “What’s wrong?”
“What happened?” Ruan Sixian pointed at that box. “How did it break? Who broke it?”
Before Fu Mingyu could speak, she continued, “Zhang Auntie is so careful. Did you break it? How could you be so careless?”
Just as Fu Mingyu opened his mouth, she glared at him again and said, “No wonder you were so eager today! Fu! Ming! Yu! Are you tired of living?!”
The series of questions came like machine gun fire. Fu Mingyu took a deep breath and said, “Doudou came over today.”
Ruan Sixian: “…”
She looked at the fragments in the box, then glanced at Fu Mingyu a couple of times, snapped the box shut with a “snap,” and turned toward the bathroom. “Oh, well, I’ll make another one another day.”
Fu Mingyu watched her back, about to say he would accompany her next time when he heard her say, “I can’t hold a grudge against a dog, can I?”
Fu Mingyu: “…”
“Oh.”
