Cang Lan Dao – Chapter 66

◎I Want You◎

After Luo Wanqing finished playing a birthday celebration tune on the pipa, she set down the instrument and leaped down from the corridor, landing in front of Cui Heng.

Cui Heng looked at her with a smile but said nothing. Luo Wanqing glanced at the qin held by the servant and took it with one hand, asking with some confusion, “Why didn’t you catch it?”

Cui Heng didn’t answer, only asking, “Why did you play that tune just now?”

This question made Luo Wanqing somewhat embarrassed. She coughed lightly and said, “I heard… today is your birthday. I felt the first tune was rather inauspicious, so I played one with better meaning for you instead.”

Hearing this, Cui Heng lowered his head and chuckled softly.

His smile was different from usual. Though he normally smiled, it always felt like a mask hanging on his face. But now his smile carried some bitterness, yet Luo Wanqing felt that never before had he stood so truly before her.

After a moment, he gave a gold bead to the servant and beckoned, “Bring your bow and give me three arrows.”

The servant complied in bewilderment. Under everyone’s puzzled gazes, Cui Heng nocked the three arrows.

“What are you doing?”

Luo Wanqing turned to look in the direction his arrows pointed.

Under the eaves of the roof, three copper coins were barely visible in the night. Cui Heng concentrated for a moment, then suddenly released.

The arrows shot toward the three copper coins, piercing through their central holes and pulling the attached thin strings. In that instant, three bursts of fireworks exploded brilliantly above the tall building.

Luo Wanqing’s eyes widened as she stared in amazement at the fireworks on the roof.

Cui Heng turned to look at her.

She stood beside him, holding the qin he had once joyfully given away, her eyes filled with the scattered fireworks above.

He didn’t know why, but despite knowing he shouldn’t, in that moment he was possessed by some impulse to tentatively grasp her hand.

The moment their hands touched, Luo Wanqing looked back in surprise, and his palm couldn’t help but sweat.

Neither spoke through their masks as they stared at each other. After a moment, Cui Heng heard the sound of someone running urgently toward them.

Catching sight of Li Guiyu rushing out from an alley and looking around, Cui Heng suddenly came to his senses. He gripped Luo Wanqing’s hand tightly and said in a low voice, “Li Guiyu is here.”

With that, he pulled Luo Wanqing toward the crowded area ahead.

Fireworks continued blooming in the sky, making the entire street flicker between light and shadow.

Li Guiyu arrived at the approximate location where he had heard the qin music and looked around at the human fireworks. Turning back, he saw a somewhat familiar figure holding a qin in one arm, being pulled away by a young man.

Li Guiyu stared blankly at that scene. The woman seemed to glance back at him.

She wore a white jade peach blossom mask, her face unclear, appearing somewhat similar to Luo Wanqing yet completely different.

Luo Wanqing couldn’t play the qin—he had never seen her holding one.

She would never let someone pull her along, running so freely through the streets.

He stood there in a daze, feeling a tearing pain spread through his heart as he watched the two figures run into the distance.

After the fireworks ended, Zitang, Qingzhu and others caught up to Li Guiyu, asking urgently, “Your Highness, what’s wrong?”

“Go inquire,” Li Guiyu came to his senses, realizing his loss of composure, and said in a low, hoarse voice, “who was playing the pipa here just now?”

Zitang and Qingzhu immediately went to ask people nearby.

Soon, they returned with results, finding Li Guiyu: “It was a woman wearing a white jade peach blossom mask.”

Zitang said carefully, “We heard she was with her lover…”

“That wasn’t her lover!” Li Guiyu interrupted Zitang coldly, raising his eyes to correct, “She was with a man. What happened next?”

Sensing Li Guiyu’s mood, Zitang lowered his head cautiously: “The woman came with a man. They played on Linglong Street for over half an hour. The man won the entire street, then the woman won a qin with her pipa playing. She stood in the corridor and played another tune, after which the man shot down three copper coins simultaneously with three arrows, lighting the fireworks of the qin pavilion.”

Hearing this, Li Guiyu closed his eyes.

How could he not understand?

The first pipa tune was a lament for the dead, but the second was a birthday song popular among young people in Jiangnan.

The first tune was to help that person win the qin, the second to celebrate someone’s birthday.

“Investigate.”

Li Guiyu suppressed his emotions, closing his eyes and raising his hand: “Find out who it was.”

Though he roughly guessed the person’s identity, he never trusted intuition or speculation.

In all matters, there must be solid evidence.

How could someone cavorting with other men possibly be his young lady?

Yet when he closed his eyes, he saw that year on Jiangnan’s long street, Luo Wanqing standing beside him, clapping in delight.

Winning an entire street…

Li Guiyu couldn’t help but clench his fist, laughing mockingly. Who hadn’t won before?

“Forget it.” Li Guiyu opened his eyes and coldly called back Zitang and the others, “Tomorrow, prepare men to wait at Duke An’s mansion, help Lu Lingchan at the crucial moment.”

This confused Zitang and Qingzhu: “Your Highness?”

“Help him enter the Zheng mansion. Zheng Jinxin will assist him.” Li Guiyu turned the jade ring on his finger, looking back toward the end of the long street where the two departing figures were long gone. Staring at the street, he said coldly, “Whether it is or isn’t, one test will tell.”

Luo Wanqing followed Cui Heng running out of the main street, still unable to resist looking back.

Cui Heng quietly released her hand, seeing her look back, and said with a smile, “What, reluctant to leave? Want to go back?”

“I just find it strange,” Luo Wanqing turned back at his voice, “after a whole hour, he’s still chasing?”

“Who knows?”

Cui Heng smiled and walked with her toward the Supervision Department.

When they returned to the Supervision Department, they were immediately informed that Zhang Yiran was waiting for them with Meixiang.

Luo Wanqing and Cui Heng hurried to the main hall. After meeting the witness called Meixiang, Luo Wanqing thanked Zhang Yiran, then had Fang Yuan and others awaken to escort Zhang Yiran. She confirmed with Meixiang that she had seen Lu Lingchan at the human traffickers’, had her sign and seal her testimony, and arranged accommodation for her.

By the time all this was done, it was well past midnight. As Luo Wanqing escorted Meixiang to her room, she realized Cui Heng had been following behind her all along, holding the qin.

She turned to look at Cui Heng, saying somewhat embarrassedly, “You came back at night and probably haven’t rested much. I forgot to let you go rest first…”

“It’s fine.”

Cui Heng interrupted her gently: “I’m happy to see how you work.”

With that, Cui Heng approached with the qin: “Come, I’ll escort you back.”

Luo Wanqing followed Cui Heng toward the back mountain.

She didn’t know why, but seeing him walking ahead holding the qin, she couldn’t help but slow her steps.

Cui Heng said nothing, so Luo Wanqing couldn’t help making conversation: “What are your plans for tomorrow?”

“I have business.”

Cui Heng smiled at her, understanding her intention, and asked, “Still want to see me?”

“If it’s convenient for you.”

Luo Wanqing didn’t dare make demands, and Cui Heng didn’t respond.

When they reached the mountain, Cui Heng escorted Luo Wanqing to her door and handed her the qin: “Take it inside.”

Luo Wanqing looked at the qin, hesitating before saying slowly, “This qin was won for you.”

Cui Heng looked up, and Luo Wanqing smiled: “Regardless of this qin’s past, today I won it for you, so take it back with you.”

“I…” Cui Heng hesitated, “It’s not appropriate for me to keep this qin.”

“Why?”

“This was made by Cui Changxi’s lover. I dare not keep it.”

“The person she’s marrying is you?” Luo Wanqing asked in surprise.

Cui Heng paused, then explained somewhat helplessly: “No. When the qin was given, that person’s status was different from hers. He made the qin personally but couldn’t give it directly, so he had Xie Heng present it on his behalf. That’s why the outside world has always thought Xie Heng made the qin.”

Hearing this, Luo Wanqing nodded, then said, “Is that person still alive?”

“Yes.”

“Then this qin,” Luo Wanqing suggested with a smile, “you should give it to him.”

“What if it brings back painful memories?” Cui Heng looked at the Fengwei in his hands.

Luo Wanqing smiled: “Why not fond remembrance instead?”

Hearing this, Cui Heng said nothing.

Luo Wanqing said gently, “If I were to die someday, though I might say forget me, I would still hope that those who loved me could remember me without being trapped by that memory. Between him and her, since they truly loved each other, there must have been beautiful moments. Why fear remembering them?”

Cui Heng listened, quietly gazing into her eyes.

Seeing his silence, Luo Wanqing couldn’t help asking, “Why aren’t you speaking?”

“Is it the same with Li Guiyu?”

Cui Heng spoke, and Luo Wanqing froze.

Realizing his slip, Cui Heng chuckled lightly and said, “I understand. Thank you for the qin. It’s late now, Xiniang should rest.”

With that, Cui Heng prepared to leave with the qin.

Luo Wanqing quickly called out, “Wait.”

Cui Heng turned and saw Luo Wanqing take out a box from her sleeve.

Cui Heng looked puzzled as Luo Wanqing opened the box, revealing a white jade flying crane hairpin inside.

Cui Heng stared blankly at the white jade flying crane hairpin in the box, hearing Luo Wanqing say, “This hairpin isn’t for Master Zhang—it’s for you.”

Cui Heng looked at the hairpin for a long time before saying hoarsely, “This hairpin is of good quality. It must have cost quite a bit?”

Luo Wanqing felt somewhat embarrassed, saying awkwardly, “I don’t usually spend much money.”

Cui Heng said nothing. His gaze moved inch by inch from the hairpin up to Luo Wanqing’s face.

Luo Wanqing hesitated a moment, then said softly, “Could you let me put it on you to see how it looks?”

Cui Heng hesitated briefly, then agreed: “Alright.”

Luo Wanqing was pleased and led Cui Heng inside, having him sit down.

Cui Heng placed the qin aside and sat before the mirror.

They hadn’t lit any lamps, with only moonlight falling in the room, yet Cui Heng could see the expression of the person behind him.

She removed his hair ornament and gently arranged his hair.

He didn’t want to ask why she knew how to arrange a man’s hair ornament, only quietly watching the two people in the mirror.

Since the age of eighteen, he had never felt such peace and joy.

This peace and joy filled him with panic, making him unconsciously clench his hands on his knees.

He was too happy—so happy it frightened him, afraid he wouldn’t be able to let go.

When she finished arranging his hair ornament, Luo Wanqing looked up at the young man in the mirror. Even with his mask, she couldn’t help smiling and praising: “Beautiful.”

Cui Heng looked at the person in the mirror and said softly, “Is this to celebrate my birthday?”

“Yes.”

Luo Wanqing looked down at the hairpin in his hair, saying gently, “Happy birthday. May you be joyful every year.”

Cui Heng dared not speak.

Looking in the mirror, he was so clearly aware that she was looking at him.

Her eyes were full of him.

At this moment, in this scene, under this sky and on this earth, there was only Cui Heng and her.

This realization filled him with enormous joy and celebration. He turned to look up at her, restraining his emotions as he gazed at her.

But perhaps even his restrained gaze was too intense. Luo Wanqing sensed something and lowered her head.

The moment their eyes met, Luo Wanqing’s heart trembled.

His eyes were like a net, trapping her completely.

In that gaze, he stood up, his shadow enveloping her, his presence surrounding her.

Her heartbeat inexplicably quickened, and suddenly that question from tonight flashed through her mind—

What if I kissed you?

This thought seemed to travel from her heart to her eyes.

He looked into her eyes, his gaze rippling with unspoken words.

His entire being cried out, his breathing became irregular, his muscles trembling with restraint.

Not daring to let her notice, his Adam’s apple moved as he struggled to control his arms, steadily raising his hand to cover her eyes.

Luo Wanqing looked up in confusion, her graceful neck like a crane’s, her lips unconsciously moving toward him.

“Since it’s my birthday,” his gaze couldn’t move away, fixed entirely on her lips as he spoke hoarsely, “grant me one wish?”

“What?”

“I want you…”

Cui Heng began, saying these three words before stopping.

Luo Wanqing waited quietly. After a long while, he seemed to exhaust all his strength before continuing: “…to become the best Inspector of the Supervision Department.”

Luo Wanqing had guessed he would say this, smiled broadly, and readily agreed: “Alright.”

Cui Heng looked at her smile, knowing she hadn’t thought of what he’d almost said earlier—perhaps that first sentence was the truth.

He wanted her.

Not just to become the best Inspector of the Supervision Department.

What he wanted was her as a person.

But this was never something he could obtain by wishing, nor something she could control. Her agreement was merely deceiving him.

Even if it wasn’t deceiving him, Xie Heng couldn’t promise her to himself.

Yet despite all that shouldn’t be and couldn’t be, wearing the jade hairpin she gave him and looking at the person before him, he still couldn’t restrain himself from clearly knowing:

He wanted her.

This desire was so intense it felt like withdrawing from ten thousand times the amount of mandala incense, making every inch of his muscles ache with restraint.

Seeing he still hadn’t released his hand, Luo Wanqing asked in confusion, “Cui Heng?”

“Don’t open your eyes.”

Cui Heng spoke hoarsely, then held his breath and carefully lowered his head, kissing her eyes gently through his palm.

This kiss was precious and careful. Luo Wanqing only felt the person before her draw near, then move away.

“Don’t open your eyes, don’t make a sound.”

He instructed again.

Luo Wanqing smiled: “What are you doing?”

“If you open your eyes, I fear I won’t be able to leave.”

“Then why must you leave?”

Luo Wanqing was puzzled.

Cui Heng said nothing.

After a long while, he smiled. He leaned close to her ear, his breath touching her earlobe. No longer concealing his voice, his tone was husky, lingering, heavy with desire as he emphasized: “I must leave.”

This voice made Luo Wanqing freeze. She couldn’t say exactly how it differed from Cui Heng’s usual voice, but the moment she heard it, she felt something change.

She couldn’t help stiffening, feeling somewhat panicked.

Cui Heng noticed and chuckled.

He said no more, straightened up, and she vaguely heard him take the qin, saying gently, “Thank you.”

“Wait!”

Luo Wanqing didn’t dare open her eyes but remembered: “There’s a box on the dressing table with things you gave me. Please take them—they’re too precious for me to accept.”

Hearing this, he laughed aloud.

“Not as precious as this white jade hairpin.”

With that, he left.

After he was gone, Luo Wanqing slowly opened her eyes after a long while.

She looked at the empty room, feeling somewhat lost, then smiled and quickly brushed away that feeling.

She patted her cheeks, deciding to wash up quickly.

Tomorrow when the arrest warrant came down, there would still be a hard battle.

Luo Wanqing took a deep breath, adjusted her mood, washed up, and lay down on the bed.

Yet the moment she closed her eyes, she couldn’t help remembering under the fireworks when he grasped her hand and she looked back.

She seemed to see panic in his eyes, making her feel in that instant that his pulling her along had nothing to do with Li Guiyu.

Even if no one had come at that moment, no one pursuing them, no need for them to flee…

He would still have taken her hand.

When Luo Wanqing went to sleep, Xie Heng returned to the small courtyard with the qin, looked up, and saw Qingya sitting at the chess table drinking tea and waiting for him.

The chess table held crisscrossed pieces. Xie Heng glanced at him and approached with the qin.

“Zhao Sanhu and the Duke’s mansion are already being watched, but Li Guiyu’s side is hard to read. Tonight his people searched for you two for half the night—who knows what they were looking for.”

Qingya looked at the chess game, playing with a piece in his hand, saying slowly, “A game of chess?”

“For you.”

Xie Heng placed the qin beside Qingya.

Seeing the qin, Qingya’s movements paused. Xie Heng turned to go inside, saying flatly, “Found it at the qin pavilion.”

“Why bring it back?”

Qingya gently touched the strings. Xie Heng heard the implication: “You knew where it was?”

“Yes.”

“Why didn’t you retrieve it?”

“Because,” Qingya looked up at Xie Heng, “past dead objects need not be treasured. You and I will meet her in the future.”

Xie Heng’s hand washing movement stopped as blood-red color instantly covered everything, blocking out the night’s moonlight.

Xie Heng’s hands trembled slightly. He lowered his eyes and responded.

“Mm.”

Luo Wanqing slept through the night and woke early the next day to apply for arrest documents using Meixiang’s testimony.

Meixiang had previously been imprisoned with her for several days as one of the victims. She was attractive, and according to a recently captured trafficker’s confession, they would regularly tribute a batch of beautiful women for Lu Lingchan to personally select. Those chosen would be taken by Lu Lingchan, while the unchosen would be sold off.

Meixiang had been one of the women sent for selection but wasn’t chosen. However, she had indeed seen Lu Lingchan at the traffickers’ place.

Luo Wanqing used Lu Lingchan’s portrait for comparison, had her identify him, then recorded her experiences as testimony. This evidence was sufficient for her to apply for Lu Lingchan’s arrest warrant.

She had obtained the testimony the previous night, but since no one processed arrest warrants at midnight, Luo Wanqing could only submit it this morning, then sent word to those who had been working with her on the Eastern Palace case.

After yesterday’s conflict, these people were somewhat reluctant to deal with her. She had called everyone to come at the hour of Si, but they all dragged their feet, arriving two quarters of an hour late.

Once everyone entered, Luo Wanqing gave Fang Yuan a look. Fang Yuan immediately stood to close the door. Luo Wanqing looked around and said with a smile, “Everyone, I’ve called you here today to announce something.”

“Announce what?” someone said impatiently. “Catching some random cats and dogs—Inspector Liu can arrest them as she pleases. Why call us together repeatedly to discuss?”

“Today we’re not catching cats and dogs.”

Luo Wanqing glanced at the speaker, recognizing him as one who always liked to oppose her.

She paid him no mind, placing a stack of case files on the table. Scanning everyone, she said slowly, “First, let me apologize to all my colleagues. These past days I’ve deceived you all. From the beginning, I intended to thoroughly investigate the Eastern Palace case.”

Hearing this, everyone looked over in surprise. Zhao Sanhu couldn’t help saying, “Thoroughly investigate? Inspector Liu, are you joking?”

“Whether I’m joking or not, Inspector Zhao should know best.”

Luo Wanqing straightened, saying calmly, “The previous three Inspectors all met with suspicious accidents, so I always suspected there was a mole in the Supervision Department. I’ve been deliberately testing everyone these past days.”

Hearing this, everyone’s expressions varied. Luo Wanqing tapped the table, continuing, “Last night I went alone to arrest a key witness. I separately told five Inspectors I suspected, giving each a different witness name. I then checked the situations of all these witnesses. Finally, when I arrested Eastern Palace Assistant Minister Lin Shuzhi, I encountered an ambush.”

With that, Luo Wanqing’s gaze moved to Zhao Sanhu. She smiled at him: “And I only told Inspector Zhao Sanhu about arresting Lin Shuzhi.”

As soon as she finished speaking, Zhao Sanhu realized something was wrong and leaped up, drawing his blade to rush outside.

However, Fang Zhi, sitting beside him, was prepared. The moment he drew his blade, Fang Zhi and Fang Shun struck together, pressing him down and disarming him.

Xing Ling simultaneously rushed forward, dislocating both his arm bones with two “cracks.” Zhao Sanhu immediately howled in pain, cursing, “Liu Xiniang, you bitch…”

Before he could finish, Luo Wanqing put on gloves and grabbed his tongue, pulling it out.

“Still cursing?”

Luo Wanqing sneered coldly: “Don’t want your tongue anymore?”

Zhao Sanhu dared not speak. Luo Wanqing disgustedly released his tongue and looked at Fang Shun, waving her hand: “Take him down for interrogation.”

Fang Shun immediately complied, and together with Fang Zhi, they bound and dragged him out.

After Zhao Sanhu was dragged away, the room fell completely silent. Luo Wanqing threw away her gloves, sat back down, looked up at everyone, and spoke rapidly and coldly: “Now that I’ve caught the mole and we have substantial evidence, we begin formal case work from today. No tardiness, no early departures, no insubordination, no frivolity. Tomorrow if anyone is even slightly late,” her blade was already unsheathed, pressing against Sun Shangquan’s neck as she stared at him deadly, “don’t blame my blade for being too sharp.”

“I wouldn’t dare.”

Sun Shangquan, with the blade at his neck, held his breath and answered carefully.

Hearing this, Luo Wanqing sheathed her blade. Seeing everyone had straightened up, she said calmly, “Then today everyone will wait at Duke An’s mansion gates, watch Eastern Palace Chamberlain Lu Lingchan closely. I submitted the arrest warrant application this morning. Once the arrest order arrives, we move immediately.”

“Eastern Palace Chamberlain?”

Xing Ling couldn’t help speaking: “Directly arrest the Eastern Palace Chamberlain?”

“Capture the leader first.” Luo Wanqing explained, “The Eastern Palace Chamberlain is the core of the entire Eastern Palace operations. Arrest him, and won’t we understand exactly how the Eastern Palace’s dirty money operates and flows?”

Everyone understood this logic, but directly arresting the Duke An’s heir and Eastern Palace Chamberlain still made them nervous.

Such actions were undoubtedly absolute provocation to those noble families, even if it would completely enrage them.

Knowing everyone’s concerns, Luo Wanqing stood up and said calmly, “Don’t be afraid.” Her voice was unusually steady, calming everyone’s hearts. “If the sky falls, I’ll bear it.”

Hearing this, everyone fell silent, all examining her. After a long while, Fang Yuan smiled.

“With Inspector Liu’s words, I can go all out.”

Luo Wanqing nodded approvingly.

“Go then,” Luo Wanqing waved her hand, looking around at everyone, “Watch Lu Lingchan.”

“Yes.”

Everyone stood and responded in unison.

With orders given, everyone went into action, maintaining surveillance on Lu Lingchan.

Arresting someone like Lu Lingchan from an official family was different from arresting commoners. These noble families’ residences required the highest level search warrants. Luo Wanqing waited all day for all procedures to be completed. By nightfall, when she finally received the documents, she immediately said coldly, “Xing Ling, Fang Yuan, gather the men.”

Everyone was extremely skilled at missions now. After Luo Wanqing spoke, those remaining at headquarters began donning equipment. Luo Wanqing wrapped her thousand-mechanism bead bracelet, placed her hand on her blade, and led them out, heading straight for Duke An’s mansion.

While Luo Wanqing was en route, the atmosphere at Duke An’s mansion was quite tense.

Lu Lingchan and his father Duke An sat in the study. Duke An frowned: “The Third Prince sent word that the Supervision Department planned to arrest Lin Shuzhi last night, fearing they intend to investigate thoroughly. I’ve already applied to the Personnel Ministry for your external transfer. Once the documents arrive, you leave immediately.”

“What’s to fear?” Hearing this, Lu Lingchan sneered coldly, “There are so many noble family children in the Eastern Palace. His Majesty hasn’t said a word. Even if they arrest me, what can they do?”

“Don’t be foolish!”

Duke An was furious hearing this: “The Supervision Department is different from the Justice Ministry and Imperial Censorate. This Inspector previously kept saying she wouldn’t investigate thoroughly, so everyone ignored her. In this past month she’s cleaned up all the Eastern Palace subordinate cases, not touching any officials or nobles. Now suddenly wanting to arrest Lin Shuzhi, she must be fully prepared. If she truly comes to arrest you, do you think she just wants to pin some random charge on you? She probably plans to put you in prison and subject you to eight or ten tortures until you confess everyone before she’ll be satisfied.”

Hearing “tortures,” Lu Lingchan shuddered all over.

He couldn’t help saying, “Then… should I leave now?”

“If you leave now, it’s fleeing from guilt. Without investigation, you’d be a criminal.” Duke An analyzed seriously, “For now, stay put. She didn’t catch Lin Shuzhi last night and can’t reach you immediately. Wait for the transfer order first. She should arrest from below. If she arrests Lin Shuzhi and others, then you can leave.”

“What if she comes directly for me?”

Lu Lingchan felt uneasy.

Duke An’s face darkened as he roared angrily, “She wouldn’t dare! How presumptuous!”

Just as he finished speaking, urgent news came from outside.

“Terrible news, Your Grace, Young Master,” a servant rushed in, gasping heavily, face full of panic, “The Supervision Department people have come!”
