Chapter 17: Testing

There was no light in the Buddhist cave, with only an oil lamp providing illumination.

The lamp wick made a “pop” sound, breaking the silence.

Yin Changli was the first to regain his composure. He acted as if nothing had happened, took a sip of tea, and said in a calm, unwavering voice: “Thank you.”

Tuntun Shu put down the teapot, scratched his face with his two front paws, maneuvered around the dagger stuck in the desk, leaped down, and returned to Xiang Haikui’s side, transforming back into the beautiful young man.

“Little Bai, what was that about?” Xiang Haikui whispered to him.

“Dao Chen’s gesture just now was exactly like Uncle’s.” Beads of sweat appeared at Bai Xingxian’s temple, which he wiped away with his sleeve. “So I acted completely on instinct.”

“Your practiced manner is truly heartbreaking.” While speaking to him, Xiang Haikui observed Yin Changli from the corner of her eye.

His face was hidden behind the Buddhist scripture, making his expression unreadable, but that posture of drinking tea and reading was unmistakably similar to her employer’s.

Xiang Haikui thought of a reason: “Dao Chen used to follow Senior Yin for a full hundred years, so it’s normal that he learned from him.”

Her employer, well, he might be cunning in his dealings with others—if he went out to buy a pack of spicy snacks, possibly nine out of ten people he encountered had been swindled by him before—but his elegance was genuine, his nobility was real, and he was always the center of attention wherever he stood, as if he carried his spotlight.

Even she couldn’t help but imitate his hairstyle, attaching decorations to her temples.

“That makes sense.” Bai Xingxian nodded in agreement but raised a new question. “But when he served beside Uncle, I wasn’t even born yet. How did he know to hold out the empty cup toward me?”

“About that…” Xiang Haikui recalled how Dao Chen had suddenly shown a terrified expression after being stabbed by the dagger, and after returning, he seemed like a completely different person. “Could it be that when Senior was forging the dagger, he hid a split soul inside it, and when the dagger pierced Dao Chen’s body, the boss’s split soul took possession?”

Crafty rabbits have three burrows—with her boss being hunted by all manner of people, it would be perfectly normal for him to create several split souls.

Bai Xingxian’s eyes lit up: “Little Sister Kui is so clever. That’s a possibility!”

“But if it’s Senior’s split soul, I can understand why he wouldn’t recognize me, but he recognizes you. Why wouldn’t he acknowledge you?” Xiang Haikui was puzzled again.

“That’s right.” Bai Xingxian’s mind also turned to mush.

“I’m afraid Dao Chen is being deliberately mysterious, planning something we don’t know about.”

“Uncle once said that when the situation is unclear, the best approach is not to move if the enemy doesn’t move.”

Xiang Haikui: “Then shall we observe for a while?”

Bai Xingxian: “Yes.”

“Everyone, it’s late. This humble monk is preparing to retire for the night.” Yin Changli closed the Buddhist scripture and looked at them.

“Go ahead and sleep.” Xiang Haikui’s scalp tingled at the thought that he might be her boss’s split soul, but she maintained her vigilance. “I’m here to keep an eye on you, not as your guest.”

Yin Changli could see that this young girl was very stubborn. He didn’t argue, simply removed his monk’s robe, and lay down in his inner garment.

He faced the stone wall with his back to them.

His instinctive action earlier had helped him understand some things.

Lu Xiqiao seemed unrelated to him, but the hamster demon and the young girl appeared to know him.

Especially the hamster demon, who seemed to have an extremely close relationship with him.

Yin Changli couldn’t remember anything at all. Unable to determine if they were good or bad, loyal or already betrayed, he dared not reveal himself easily.

After all, he could not currently protect himself whatsoever.

His soul had suffered serious damage and was still being used to resist Dao Chen’s consciousness and the sword protecting him.

Anyone with a bit of skill could easily take his life.

He had to be cautious.

Once again, it was the dead of night with a solitary moon hanging high.

Beyond the pass in the great desert, three small creatures hopped around on the sandy ground with “gurgling” sounds, tracking Yin Changli’s aura.

Liu Yixing and Luo Yunxiu followed behind the small monsters, continuously circling in the desert.

During the day, the small monsters complained that the sand burned their feet, huddling together in the beast’s pouch and refusing to come out. They could only move at night.

Water was evaporating too quickly. Luo Yunxiu continuously poured fragrant dew from her jade bottle, patting it on her delicate cheeks, feeling irritated: “Brother Liu, didn’t you say it would work this time? Why are these three ugly creatures circling in the desert again?”

“Patience. Catching Yin Changli requires patience.” Liu Yixing, full of confidence, reassured her. “They’re lingering between sand pits and burrows, which means Yin Changli has been here.”

“And then what? Why has the trail gone cold?” Luo Yunxiu thought he was unreliable, no matter how she looked at him.

Liu Yixing explained ingratiatingly: “There are signs of a fight at this sand pit. A battle occurred during the day. Someone probably died, and Yin Changli likely couldn’t hold on and abandoned his physical body to possess someone else.”

“He changed bodies? If so, how can we find him?” Luo Yunxiu was taken aback, remembering Yin Changli’s exceptionally handsome face, feeling somewhat regretful.

After all, when that senior was still serving in Bi’an City, he single-handedly raised the overall level of attractiveness in the entire Underworld.

Liu Yixing smiled: “This is good news. We just need to investigate who was involved in the fight here today, check them one by one, and the snake-catching beast will be able to identify him…”

So, after eliminating various suspects from the tribes, to Yin Sha City.

Their final stop was the Buddhist cave.

Inside the Buddhist cave, Yin Changli was exhausted and had truly fallen asleep.

After all, if they decided to make a move, he had no means of resistance.

After resting, Yin Changli woke up, his eyelids twitching heavily.

Xiang Haikui, Bai Xingxian, and Lu Xiqiao stood with their arms crossed, surrounding him from three different positions, six eyes staring at him unblinkingly.

Yin Changli kept his eyelids lowered. Under their watchful gaze, he unhurriedly put on his monk’s robe, picked up a Buddhist scripture, and walked toward the exit of the Buddhist cave.

The three followed closely behind him like shadows.

“How is it?” Xiang Haikui asked.

“The more I look, the more similar he seems.” Bai Xingxian’s voice trembled, unable to control his urge to transform back to his original form and follow at his feet.

Mere observation wasn’t enough; they needed to test him. Xiang Haikui asked: “Little Bai, what does your uncle like most and hate most?”

Bai Xingxian thought for a moment: “He likes his hair the most and hates others touching his hair the most.”

Xiang Haikui glanced at the bright, bald head in front of them: “Next one.”

As Bai Xingxian was about to speak, she added, “No, you need to mention habits that Senior didn’t have before but has now. Or ones he had before but doesn’t have now. Things Dao Chen couldn’t possibly know.”

This stumped Bai Xingxian: “There are none. You don’t know this, but my uncle is especially traditional, stubborn, and constant… I’ve been by his side for five hundred years, and his daily routines and eating habits have never changed.”

“I really can’t see that.” No matter how Xiang Haikui looked at him, he always seemed like a playboy who couldn’t stand solitude and liked to roam around. “No choice then. I’ll have to use my secret weapon.”

Seeing her eyes narrow slightly, Bai Xingxian was curious: “What secret weapon?”

The two whispered together while Lu Xiqiao didn’t make a sound.

Whatever they did, he would follow.

He was certain this was the calm before the storm.

Something big was definitely about to happen.

Indeed, it happened. After walking out of the Buddhist cave, Xiang Haikui suddenly opened her sword case, drew out Tian Kuang, walked quickly ahead of Yin Changli, then turned and swiftly pointed her sword at him!

The sword tip was less than half an inch from his throat. Yin Changli was forced to stop, his gaze slightly cold as he looked at her.

Xiang Haikui’s throat made a small sound. Inwardly, she called out “Yin Changli” and shouted: “Fool!”

Yin Changli frowned, not understanding what was happening. The girl in front of him suddenly sheathed her sword and walked behind him with her head down.

“In the past, when I cursed Senior to his face, Tian Kuang would get excited. This time, there was no reaction at all,” Xiang Haikui said to Bai Xingxian.

“However, it could also be due to the influence of the Tianren Jian.” Bai Xingxian felt this test was inconclusive.

Ahead of them, Yin Changli understood they were testing him.

So, his real name was “Fool”?

What a strange name.
