You Mingxu felt her heart skip at his words, though she agreed with his reasoning. She looked up at the rooms near the stairwell.
Due to the sudden nature of the incident and lack of concrete evidence, the police had only taken the Fenjin Bao company employees in for questioning while conducting an urgent search of the premises. The remaining officers were expanding the search to nearby areas. They hadn’t thoroughly examined all rooms or collected all physical evidence yet.
You Mingxu steadied herself as an image formed in her mind: Fan Jia stumbling down from upstairs, looking ill and exhausted, with that “power bank” containing evidence in her pocket.
“Fan Jia knew that if she made it to the first floor, we would find her even if she couldn’t get out. But she never made it down. Why?” You Mingxu asked.
Yin Feng answered, “Either she lacked the strength to continue, or she encountered some danger.”
You Mingxu looked up at the rooms facing the stairs. “Right. Whether by choice or force, she entered one of these rooms. And then she vanished.”
The first room was an office with three desks, some open financial reports, and a computer that hadn’t been shut down. You Mingxu only glanced around before backing out.
The second room was another office, larger, with five or six desks and several large cabinets. The police had searched it during the day without finding anything. You Mingxu looked around briefly before leaving.
Next to the stairs was the men’s restroom. You Mingxu pushed open the door and immediately noticed the window on the wall—too high and small for an adult to pass through. She checked each stall before looking up at the ceiling.
Yin Feng joined her in looking up.
“Climb up there and take a look,” she said.
Yin Feng was about to agree when he noticed the stains on the bathroom wall and hesitated.
You Mingxu: “Go on.”
“Ah Xu, let’s call Xu Mengshan instead,” Yin Feng said quickly. “It’s too dirty and smelly.”
You Mingxu gave him a wry smile: “You’re the boss, delegating so nicely.” She kicked him lightly on the buttocks. “Get going! I praised you too soon today! A grown man afraid of getting dirty! If I were as tall as you, I’d have done it myself already.”
Yin Feng’s buttocks tensed.
The woman’s kick was neither light nor heavy, but it didn’t hurt. Men’s buttocks were quite sensitive, and her kick sent a peculiar tingle through him—an oddly pleasant sensation. Suddenly, he felt he could endure any amount of dirt. Holding his breath, he climbed onto the partition wall in a few quick moves, straddled it, and quickly opened the ventilation duct in the ceiling.
You Mingxu watched him work.
Yin Feng shone his flashlight around up there for a while but found nothing before jumping back down.
Still, he couldn’t help sniffing his sleeve, convinced he’d picked up an odor, and frowned. You Mingxu found this amusing—how much smell could he have picked up in such a short time? She deliberately leaned in to sniff and made a face: “Disgusting.”
Before she finished speaking, Yin Feng wrapped her in a tight embrace, pressing his head firmly against her shoulder, and whispered, “If I’m disgusting, we’ll be disgusting together.”
You Mingxu was about to laugh and push him away when she felt one of his hands slide down to her waist while the other encircled her back, tightening his hold.
You Mingxu paused for two seconds before saying, “Alright, let go.”
He muttered, “No.”
You Mingxu’s voice was surprisingly calm, even to herself: “Enough, Yin Feng. We’re investigating. Let’s not cross the line.”
He released her and walked out of the bathroom before she could see his face. You Mingxu watched his retreating, unable to name the feeling in her heart. But she knew that now, he understood.
When she emerged, his expression had returned to normal, lips slightly pursed as he looked around.
You Mingxu felt relieved, yet somehow uncomfortable. She said, “Let’s continue searching.”
He made a sound of agreement.
You Mingxu turned and pushed open another door beside them.
When she pressed the light switch on the wall, nothing happened—it was broken. This appeared to be a storage room, no more than 3-4 square meters, pitch dark inside with several storage racks and items piled up in the corners. On the opposite wall, a window opened to darkness, with only starlight filtering through.
