Yin Feng smiled, methodically wiping each finger with the tissue before tossing it in the trash. “What’s this, got a new pursuer?”
You Mingxu stared directly into his eyes.
Despite his casual tone, those pitch-black eyes gazed deeply at her, devoid of any hint of humor. Under such a stare, even You Mingxu couldn’t help but feel an inexplicable chill.
“None of your business,” You Mingxu said. “Weren’t we done with each other?”
Yin Feng slipped both hands into his pockets and said softly, “What if I don’t want to be done anymore?”
You Mingxu watched him silently.
Yin Feng smiled slightly and reached out to grab her arm, but just then, Xu Mengshan’s voice came from behind them: “Come quickly! We have important evidence!”
You Mingxu turned and left immediately.
Yin Feng’s hand caught empty air. He smiled and unhurriedly returned it to his pocket.
Jing Ping crushed out his cigarette and threw it in the trash. Having no interest in prying into others’ privacy, he had been looking the other way until Xu Mengshan’s call, turning just in time to see Yin Feng’s failed attempt to grab You Mingxu. Walking up beside Yin Feng, he suddenly smiled and said, “She’s not paying you any attention?”
Yin Feng glanced at him and smiled—the kind of smile that showed both happiness and helplessness that only a man in love could make: “How embarrassing, she’s been giving me the cold shoulder these past few days.”
Jing Ping said nothing and walked ahead.
Yin Feng followed, his expression unchanged.
—
The new evidence was surveillance footage.
Jixiang Fish Restaurant was in a remote location with few visitors, so except for the entrance, there were no cameras inside. The surrounding forest was the same way.
The police had already searched the scene and found that besides the main entrance, it would be easy for someone to slip in from other directions.
The video wasn’t from an official security camera but from a fruit farmer’s private camera on a nearby mountain path. Following the principle of better safety than sorry, Xu Mengshan had collected all available surveillance footage.
It was a small downhill mountain path surrounded by fruit trees. The camera faced forward, with Jixiang Fish Restaurant barely visible at the bottom of the hill.
The timestamp showed 3:20 PM on the day Guo Xing was killed, sometime after he had arrived at the restaurant.
A figure appeared in the frame.
The person wore casual clothes, was quite tall, and wore a baseball cap. Walking down the mountain path, they seemed to tire and stopped right in front of the camera among the leaves. They lit a cigarette, tilting their head up to reveal a glimpse of their profile, took a drag, then continued downward, quickly disappearing from view.
Those watching the footage remained silent.
Yin Feng frowned slightly. Though it was just a fleeting glimpse showing only a profile, why did this person seem familiar?
Xu Mengshan felt the same, hand on his chin in thought.
Jing Ping didn’t recognize the person. He paused the frame where the figure’s head was slightly raised, mentally comparing it to every photo of drug organization members he could recall.
But You Mingxu spoke up: “It’s Luo Yu.”
At these words, Jing Ping looked at her while Xu Mengshan and Yin Feng were startled.
Xu Mengshan immediately leaned in to study the screen: “You’re sure?” It did look somewhat similar.
You Mingxu said, “I’m certain. I’d recognize him even in ashes.” After all, she had dated him for several months and spent considerable time with him. Plus, given how he had obsessively pursued her afterward, she was quite familiar with his small mannerisms and habits. So she recognized him immediately.
Jing Ping asked: “Who is Luo Yu?”
Xu Mengshan briefly explained Luo Yu’s background and his previous connections to this series of cases, making Jing Ping’s frown deepen.
You Mingxu was also lost in thought when she suddenly felt two gazes fixed on her. She looked up to find Yin Feng’s eyes still dark and cold. Uncomfortable under his stare, she glared back even more coldly. Unexpectedly, the cold light in his eyes vanished, replaced by an amused smile.
You Mingxu didn’t want to look at this old rogue.
“If that’s the case…” Jing Ping began, “This Luo Yu, being Kaiyang Group’s legal shield and likely a core member now, has appeared both around the mysteriously controlled Xiang Rong and at the scene of Guo Yu’s murder… This person is extremely crucial.”
You Mingxu and Xu Mengshan both nodded.
“What time did Gan Hongyi and his group act?” Yin Feng asked.
Xu Mengshan checked the case file and answered, “Around three o’clock too, they weren’t sure of the exact time. But Gan Hongyi and his companions didn’t know about Luo Yu’s existence and didn’t mention seeing him.”
You Mingxu said, “We’ll question them again later.”
Xu Mengshan nodded.
Jing Ping said, “If Luo Yu is the contact person between Xiangcheng and Yunnan, could that important evidence have fallen into his hands?”
This possibility seemed high, dampening everyone’s spirits.
You Mingxu recalled her interactions with Luo Yu. When pursuing her, he had appeared refined and gentle, attentive to detail. After she saw through his facade, he showed his true colors—sleazy and malicious—and wouldn’t leave her alone. She always felt his pursuit wasn’t out of any genuine feelings but had some ulterior motive.
But what he was after, she could never figure out or see through. His background appeared impeccably clean—a top law school graduate who joined a firm right after graduation and made a name for himself winning cases. Later he became entangled with Kaiyang Group, operating in grey areas. Even though Kaiyang Group was now suspected of being a criminal organization, the police had no concrete evidence. What did he want from her?
Later, they discovered this person was connected to a mysterious murderous organization and people like Gu Tiancheng. Xiang Rong had mentioned a “Brother Yu” who was his contact with the mysterious organization. But they couldn’t find any leads around Luo Yu.
Now an important undercover police officer had come to Xiangcheng carrying crucial evidence. Though Luo Yu hadn’t killed him, he had appeared at the scene and likely taken the evidence.
All the suspicious points centered on one person.
Yet all the leads dead-ended with him too.
You Mingxu wondered whose side Luo Yu was on. Was he Kaiyang Group’s loyal dog, or the mysterious organization’s mole within Kaiyang Group? Or even playing both sides? What was the relationship between the two criminal organizations? Were they colluding for mutual benefit, or was there some other grudge?
And why had someone as suspicious as Luo Yu targeted her, a mere detective? What could he gain from her?
“From now on, we keep 24-hour surveillance on Luo Yu,” You Mingxu said. “Old Ding probably won’t give us a search warrant.”
Xu Mengshan and Jing Ping both nodded—with the drug case still unclear, their superiors absolutely wouldn’t give them a warrant that might tip off their targets.
You Mingxu said, “We’ll find another way to search.”
Jing Ping smiled slightly: “Mm.” Xu Mengshan nodded too.
“With Guo Xing’s sacrifice, what about the Yunnan side?” You Mingxu asked.
Jing Ping answered, “They value this cooperation highly, so I expect they’ll send someone else soon. I’ll contact Yunnan and have them watch for movements. Once there’s news of a new contact person, they’ll notify us. For now, all we can do is wait.”
—
As Jing Ping said, whether regarding the Yunnan side or Luo Yu, all they could do now was watch closely and wait for an opportunity.
They had been awake for 24 hours investigating Guo Xing’s case. The speed at which they solved it surprised their superiors—just one day. The truth behind it left their superiors silent.
Since they had time ahead, You Mingxu’s group arranged for colleagues to monitor Luo Yu first while they each went home to catch up on sleep.
By the time You Mingxu left the police station, Yin Feng had already departed in his Bentley.
You Mingxu went home and slept soundly for most of the day, waking in the afternoon. Just as she was about to look for food, her phone rang as if someone had timed it.
She looked at the name on the screen, sat down on the couch, and answered coldly: “Hello.”
“Ah Xu,” he called out.
You Mingxu’s whole body tensed.
But his voice remained slow and low, carrying an indefinable hint of amusement: “Are you up? Let’s talk.”
You Mingxu suddenly hated him even more than before and said icily, “What is there left for us to talk about?”
Yin Feng paused, then said, “Ah Xu, I’ve remembered some things. I’ve changed my mind.”
