Just as the manager was deep in thought, You Mingxu immediately “threatened” him as well. Sure enough, the manager quickly smiled and said, “Please don’t worry, we’ll fully cooperate. This boy often comes to our internet cafe, and he was here gaming with friends just yesterday. I haven’t paid much attention to whether he’s still here now. Would you like me to help you look around? Officer, what has this kid done? It’s not related to my internet cafe, is it?”
You Mingxu didn’t answer, just waved her hand to indicate she’d handle it herself. Taking Yin Feng with her, she began searching the computers row by row.
The internet cafe was brightly lit, with boys sitting in large comfortable chairs, alternating between laughing and cursing at the intense battle scenes on their screens. Yin Feng seemed drawn to the game displays, staring at them intently. You Mingxu suddenly snapped, “What are you looking at those for? You’re not allowed to play games.”
Yin Feng lowered his head: “Oh.”
They quickly reached the end, where there were ten computers. You Mingxu checked each one, but their target wasn’t there. One of the machines was empty. Behind this row of computers, against the wall, there were several sofas and leisure chairs. Someone was lying on one of the sofas, covered with a jacket, face turned toward the wall. He was tall and thin.
You Mingxu walked over and tapped his shoulder. He turned around with a dazed expression, and who else could that fair and delicate face belong to but Li Biran?
You Mingxu felt a heavy weight lift from her heart, though she couldn’t tell if she felt relieved or annoyed. So many police officers were searching for him, even having to postpone the murder investigation. They had feared the young man might have fallen victim too, and officers were practically turning the whole city upside down, racing against time to save his life.
Yet here he was, taking a nap in an internet cafe?
You Mingxu: “Get up.”
Li Biran showed his displeasure: “Who are you?”
You Mingxu flashed her police badge in front of him, stated her police ID number, and then said, “Something’s happened at your aunt’s house. Come with me now.”
Li Biran froze for a moment, and stood up, his voice slightly trembling: “What happened?”
“You’ll know when you come with me.”
As Li Biran grabbed his clothes to follow, suddenly a handsome man darted out from the side and inserted himself between Li Biran and the beautiful police officer. Li Biran thought he must be another police officer, but unexpectedly, this handsome man turned back and glared at him forcefully.
Li Biran: “…?”
Yin Feng, however, found this immature youth extremely annoying. Regardless of what role he played in this case, how could he be napping in an internet cafe? He had caused his Miss Yu to search day and night, missing meals and sleep!
The three left the internet cafe, and You Mingxu arranged for Li Biran to sit in the car while she stepped aside to update her colleagues by phone. Everyone was relieved to hear the youth was safe and sound. You Mingxu then ordered someone to come investigate the Internet cafe while she took Li Biran to the police station, considering whether he needed to see his deceased relative. Besides, his parents and uncle would likely arrive soon.
Getting in the car, You Mingxu glanced at the rearview mirror. Li Biran sat in the back, seemingly fascinated by the police car, looking around and touching things. Yin Feng stared out the window, his eyes vacant, lost in thought again.
After a while, Li Biran’s excitement seemed to wear off, and feeling bored, he leaned forward and said, “You’re a police officer? So pretty.”
You Mingxu ignored him.
Yin Feng in the passenger seat turned around to face Li Biran, his voice cold and harsh: “What does her beauty have to do with you!”
You Mingxu’s lips curved slightly.
Li Biran shrugged. Still being a child, he wasn’t skilled at verbal sparring. He leaned back and looked out the window. After a moment, he gave a self-mocking smile.
You Mingxu’s eyes lowered, aware that Li Biran kept swinging his legs in the back seat, continuing the motion endlessly.
After a while, Li Biran took out his phone to play games, with the sound on, accompanied by his shouts: “Oh crap! Get him, get him! Go, damn…”
You Mingxu drove quietly, with only Li Biran’s voice filling the car. Yin Feng turned around, craning his neck to try to see Li Biran’s phone screen. Li Biran noticed and deliberately turned away, smiling, not letting him see.
You Mingxu: “Yin Feng, sit properly.”
Yin Feng slowly pulled his neck back.
You Mingxu said: “Didn’t I tell you, you’re not allowed to play games? Stop looking.”
Yin Feng poked at the storage compartment with his finger: “Why?”
You Mingxu couldn’t answer for a moment. Actually, wouldn’t it be good if Yin Feng became absorbed in games? It would pass the confused time, and he wouldn’t cling to her.
But playing games just wasn’t good behavior.
She said coldly: “No means no, I don’t like it.”
“Oh,” Yin Feng said, “Then I won’t look, never again.” He covered his eyes with his hands and didn’t move.
You Mingxu pulled his hands down: “No need to cover them, just sit properly.”
Li Biran, still playing games in the back seat, suddenly laughed and muttered to himself: “Oh ho, so that’s it, I see…” acting as if he’d discovered some secret.
You Mingxu glanced at him through the rearview mirror. She wondered if all teenagers were this annoying.
On the way to the police station, they passed by You Mingxu’s building. She stopped the car and looked at Yin Feng, lowering her voice: “You’ve been with me half the day, that’s enough, right? Go back and take a nap.”
Yin Feng slowly unbuckled his seatbelt, slowly pushed open the door, and slowly lifted his legs.
You Mingxu: “Hurry up!”
He stood by the car and lowered his head again: “Will you come home tonight?”
“No.”
“Tomorrow?”
“I’ll try.”
“Drive carefully, eat, and sleep on time, otherwise I’ll worry so much I won’t be able to sleep well.”
“…I know.”
You Mingxu drove away, feeling as if she’d finally shaken off a clingy child and regained her freedom. However, in the rearview mirror, she could see Yin Feng still standing there.
She was just going to work, why did they have to have such a lengthy farewell every day?
You Mingxu turned her head away, not wanting to look. Li Biran put down his phone and also looked back, saying, “Police sister, who is he to you? Not your husband, right? His…” Li Biran pointed to his head, “Something’s wrong with him, right? He’s mentally disabled!”
You Mingxu said coldly: “None of your business! Sit properly!”
On the way from You Mingxu’s home to the police station, Li Biran became very quiet, no longer playing games, just staring out the window. The youth’s fair face finally seemed filled with serious thoughts. Once or twice, when You Mingxu caught his eye in the rearview mirror, he seemed to want to ask something, his lips moving slightly, but he remained silent.
You Mingxu thought: he was finally showing nervousness. His affected calmness and deliberate noise throughout the journey seemed about to crumble as they got closer to the police station.
Entering the police station, the youth appeared affected by the solemn, tense atmosphere, following closely behind You Mingxu, hardly daring to breathe.
