Chapter 021: Taking Action

“Old Madam! Something terrible has happened!” The servant rushed toward the carriage as soon as it stopped outside the Qin residence.

Cai He frowned as she lifted the curtain, “What matter is so urgent that it cannot wait until we enter the mansion? What kind of conduct is this, causing such a commotion outside the gates?”

“Miss Cai He, we cannot wait!” The servant spoke in panic, “Young Master has brought Young Madam back, but as soon as she entered the mansion, her condition worsened. She’s bleeding now. We sent for Divine Physician Huang, but he’s not in his residence today and can’t be found…”

Upon hearing this, Madam Jiang immediately leaned forward, “Divine Physician Huang is at the Anyang Marquis Manor today, though his exact whereabouts are uncertain. Go immediately and fetch Doctor Yang from Renshou Hall.”

The servant replied with a bitter expression, “We’ve already done that. Doctor Yang is already in the mansion, but he says Young Madam is in danger. He says if we can’t stop the bleeding, we might not be able to save either the mother or the child…”

“Quick! Let’s go see!” Madam Lin’s voice trembled as she hurriedly helped Madam Jiang enter the mansion.

Qin Shuang and Qin Xiang, along with others, descended from the carriage, worry evident in their eyes.

Qin Wan, standing at the back, also furrowed her brows.

The Qin family’s eldest son, Qin Chen, had married Yao Xinlan, the second daughter of the Jianzhou Prefecture Governor, a year ago. Yao Xinlan was now seven months pregnant. A month ago, she had returned to Jianzhou for her father’s birthday celebration, and Qin Chen had gone to bring her back home ten days prior.

Had Yao Xinlan encountered some accident on the road that affected her pregnancy?

Madam Jiang and Madam Lin walked briskly ahead, while behind them, Qin Xiang pulled Qin Shuang along, “Sister, let’s go see Sister-in-law.”

Qin Shuang nodded quickly, and even Qin Li followed them toward Qin Chen’s Lingfeng Court.

Qin Wan and Fu Ling were the last to enter the mansion. After a moment’s hesitation, Qin Wan also followed.

The child in Yao Xinlan’s womb would be the Qin family’s first great-grandchild, and both Madam Jiang and Madam Lin had been extremely concerned about it. However, just as they reached the entrance of Lingfeng Court, they saw an elderly man in gray robes walking out.

Madam Jiang frowned, “Doctor Yang, you’re…”

Doctor Yang, whose full name was Yang Renlin, though not as prestigious as Divine Physician Huang’s imperial physician status, was still a highly renowned doctor in Jinzhou City. However, at this moment, he shook his head with a gloomy expression, “Madam Jiang, you should have called for me earlier. Now… I’m afraid I can do nothing. Please hurry and fetch Divine Physician Huang.”

Madam Lin’s legs weakened at these words, but Madam Jiang remained composed, “Doctor Yang, how can you know without trying—”

Yang Renlin waved his hand, “It’s not that I won’t try. I knew as soon as I arrived that Young Madam’s condition was critical. Don’t waste time now. If anyone in Jinzhou can save Young Madam, it would be Divine Physician Huang. My apologies.”

After speaking, Yang Renlin walked toward the exit. Madam Lin wanted to stop him, but Madam Jiang held her back.

She turned and sternly instructed Qin Li behind her, “Go, find Divine Physician Huang immediately. He’s either at the Anyang Marquis Manor, his pharmacy, or at the theater in the south. Go, take people with you and search!”

Madam Jiang’s voice was sharp, and Qin Li’s expression grew serious as he turned to gather people.

However, the Anyang Marquis Manor was in the east of the city, the theater in the south, and Physician Huang’s pharmacy in the northeast. It took nearly half an hour just to reach the Marquis Manor, and going back and forth between these locations meant that even if they found Huang Jinyuan, it would take at least an hour.

Madam Jiang knew the hope was slim, but she steadied herself and walked firmly into Lingfeng Court.

Upon entering, a wave of oppressive sorrow hit them.

Madam Jiang and Madam Lin strode into the room, just as Qin Chen was walking out. Qin Chen had refined features and a tall, elegant figure, wearing an embroidered azure robe. His eyebrows and eyes were typically gentle and scholarly, but now his brows were furrowed with worry for Yao Xinlan.

“Grandmother, Mother, you’re back!”

“Where’s Xinlan? How is she?”

Madam Jiang didn’t waste words with him, rushing straight to the inner chamber. As soon as she reached the doorway, Yao Xinlan’s painful moans could be heard. Madam Jiang’s eyes darkened as she hurried to the bedside, “Xinlan?”

“Grand…mother… Mother…”

On the bed, Yao Xinlan wore only her middle garments under the brocade quilt. Her belly was slightly swollen, her face deathly pale, her lips cracked, and cold sweat poured down like rain. Upon seeing Madam Jiang and Madam Lin, Yao Xinlan’s eyes reddened.

Madam Jiang grabbed Yao Xinlan’s hand, “Good child, don’t be afraid. Divine Physician Huang will be here soon, don’t be afraid.”

She then turned to look at Qin Chen, “What exactly happened? Everything was fine when you left, how did things go wrong even with you there?”

Qin Chen’s eyes filled with pain, “It’s my fault, all my fault for not taking better care of her…”

“Grandmother, don’t blame him…” Yao Xinlan’s small face, with its apricot eyes and cherry lips, and upturned nose, was usually quite endearing, but now her pale face was covered in sweat from the pain, making her look as fragile as a porcelain doll about to shatter.

“It was me, I kept urging him to hurry back, that’s why…”

Madam Jiang’s usually stern face showed rare tenderness as she felt Yao Xinlan’s forehead, “Foolish child, don’t be afraid. Everything will be fine once Divine Physician Huang arrives. You’re blessed with good fortune. For Chen’er and the child, you must hold on…”

Yao Xinlan shook her head, tears suddenly rolling down her cheeks.

“Grandmother, I… I might die, and the child might not be saved either. Grandmother, I’ve failed the Qin family. After I die, please find someone worthy of Brother Chen. Only then will I be at peace…”

Madam Lin’s eyes reddened, and even Madam Jiang’s eyes grew moist. Qin Chen immediately knelt by the bedside, holding Yao Xinlan’s hand, “Lanlan, you won’t die, and our child will be saved. Just hold on, Divine Physician Huang is coming.”

Qin Chen’s voice trembled, and behind him, Qin Xiang and Qin Shuang had already begun crying.

Yao Xinlan gasped for breath twice, her voice growing weaker, “Brother Chen, I… I can’t hold on… I’m satisfied just having been able to marry you, only… only regret not being able to give you a child…”

The room was filled with suppressed sobs, and even Yao Xinlan’s maids knelt, weeping.

Qin Chen moved forward on his knees, holding both of Yao Xinlan’s hands, his throat tight as he spoke, “Lanlan, Lanlan, you can hold on. Once Divine Physician Huang arrives, he will surely—”

“In her condition, even if Divine Physician Huang arrives, it will be too late.”

A clear, steady voice suddenly rang out. Madam Jiang frowned, and everyone else turned their heads. Only then did they realize that Qin Wan had entered at some point.

She stood in the doorway, her face unreadable in the backlight, yet even standing there quietly and seemingly fragile, she possessed a commanding presence stronger than anyone else’s.

Qin Chen was startled, surprise and grief mingling on his face before he softly asked, “Is this… Ninth Sister?”

As soon as Qin Chen finished speaking, Qin Xiang’s brows furrowed deeply as she stepped forward, “How did you get in here? Sister-in-law is at death’s door, and you’re here making cold remarks?! Get out!”

No one remembered Qin Wan’s reputation as the Medical Immortal, or perhaps they never believed it in the first place.

Qin Wan frowned slightly and stepped forward instead of retreating. She ignored everyone else, looking only at Qin Chen.

“Bring me a set of silver needles. I can save her.”

Qin Chen was stunned, and the others belatedly hesitated.

Qin Wan’s lips tightened, “What are you waiting for? Do you want to watch her die?”

Qin Chen’s eyes trembled. He shouldn’t have believed Qin Wan, but her calm and steady gaze struck him, and in a desperate gamble, he rose and rushed out, “Go, quickly, get a set of silver needles from the mansion’s medicine storehouse! Hurry!”

Qin Chen shouted hoarsely, then returned inside, looking at Qin Wan in disbelief.

Qin Wan lowered her gaze to the equally stunned Yao Xinlan, “All of you, leave.”

This command included even Madam Jiang and Madam Lin.

Qin Xiang gritted her teeth, “Why should we leave?! What tricks are you planning? You say you can save Sister-in-law, but we don’t believe you! We need to watch to feel at ease! Why should we listen to you?!”

Qin Wan walked straight to the bedside and placed her hand on Yao Xinlan’s pulse point.

Her face showed the gentleness and focus of every benevolent physician, but her words carried an inexplicable chill that made one’s blood run cold.

“Her life is in my hands. Whether you want to listen or not, you must listen.”
