Six black dots were visible, forming a perfect crescent shape of the upper and lower halves.
After careful consideration, Qin Wan confirmed they were indeed teeth marks. Human teeth, being the hardest bones in the body, could leave deep wounds that would heal over time but invariably leave scars. When Xu He conducted his first examination at dawn after discovering the headless corpse, lividity had already set in. He likely missed these small wounds. Later, as the body began to decompose and develop greenish discoloration, the chances of discovering these marks became even slimmer. It was only Qin Wan’s thoroughness that prevented this detail from being overlooked.
Although Qin Wan hadn’t definitively identified the body as Song Rou, there was a ninety percent certainty it was her. But if it was Song Rou, how did she end up with teeth marks on her shoulder? Song Rou was a noble lady who likely never had to lift a finger in her life – surely she wouldn’t have gotten into a fight where someone bit her. If not that, then even though Qin Wan was inexperienced in such matters, she could only speculate in a more intimate direction, as she could tell these teeth marks were made within the past seven months.
Yan Chi’s writing hand paused briefly, clearly surprised by this discovery. Qin Wan pondered for a moment as she examined the corpse on the table, then shook her head. Their eyes met, and Yan Chi understood that Qin Wan was indicating he shouldn’t record this wound.
Yan Chi nodded, and Qin Wan resumed her detailed examination of other areas of the body. Without an autopsy, Qin Wan couldn’t make more definitive judgments, especially regarding this seven-month-old mark whose nature she was still uncertain about.
The identity of this corpse remained a key point of concern for Qin Wan. She paused, her gaze deep in thought, prompting Yan Chi to ask, “What are you thinking about?”
Qin Wan pressed her lips together and said, “I’m wondering why the killer decapitated the victim. In ordinary murders, few people are deranged enough to go this far. Yet this person acted with extreme precision – what deep hatred did they harbor against the deceased?”
“So you doubt the victim’s identity?”
Qin Wan nodded, “That day when we saw the deceased in the bridal sedan, everyone automatically assumed it was the Song family’s, young lady. But the body is headless, and we still can’t confirm her identity.”
Speaking thus, Qin Wan turned to Xu He, “Coroner Xu, do you have the testimonies from the Song family’s escorts?”
Xu He came over but shook his head, “No, all testimonies are kept at the magistrate’s office, none here.” After a pause, he asked, “Why? What would Young Lady Nine like to know?”
Qin Wan narrowed her eyes, “I need to confirm the victim’s identity.”
She resumed examining the corpse, carefully inspecting the hands and feet. When checking the hands, her brows furrowed slightly. Though decomposition had begun and the nails had changed color, she could see the nail polish remained unfaded. After careful examination, she stated, “This is Dan Hua Kou from the capital.”
Yan Chi raised his eyebrows, and Xu He stepped forward asking, “How does Young Lady Nine know?”
A dark gleam flashed in Qin Wan’s eyes, “A few days ago, the Marquis’s mansion in the capital sent Mid-Autumn Festival gifts to Jin Zhou. The maid in charge of delivering gifts brought some small items for the young ladies of the household, including Dan Hua Kou. This product maintains its bright color without fading, making it very fashionable in the capital…”
There was no Dan Hua Kou among the festival gifts from the capital. Though she had lived in seclusion, she wasn’t as fond of adornments as other noble ladies, but she knew what was fashionable in the capital. Her mother, pitying her difficult childhood traveling with her father, had pampered her in such matters after arriving in the capital. Two months ago, her mother had personally painted her nails with Dan Hua Kou.
Qin Wan recognized it clearly, feeling a wave of grief. She steadied herself before carefully examining the deceased’s hands. Her frown deepened as she looked, first at the left hand, then the right. After a while, Qin Wan straightened up and seemed to mutter to herself, “The Song family’s young lady… was she skilled at playing the qin?”
Xu He listened with confusion and shook his head, “I only handle the corpse examination and haven’t read what’s written in the testimonies, but… how did Young Lady Nine discover this?”
Qin Wan held the deceased’s hand, explaining, “The victim’s right hand is soft, fair, and flawless, but the left hand has obvious calluses.” She bent the victim’s ring finger, “First, there’s a thick callus on the second joint of the left ring finger. Second, there’s one on the thumb joint. These calluses in both places can only mean one thing – they’re from years of playing the qin. That’s why I suspect the Song family’s young lady was skilled at playing the qin.”
Xu He’s eyes lit up, nodding repeatedly, “Once we check the testimonies or ask the Song family’s escorts—”
“No need to ask!” Before Xu He could finish, Huo Ning suddenly interrupted from the doorway. Standing motionless, he said stiffly, “I’ve read those testimonies many times. The Song family’s young lady indeed was skilled at the qin! She even had an ancient famous qin among her dowry.”
Huo Ning, being a qin enthusiast himself, naturally remembered such details clearly, especially since he had truly read the testimonies multiple times.
Qin Wan, who hadn’t paid much attention to Huo Ning before, now turned to look at him. She nodded and withdrew her gaze, saying solemnly, “If that’s the case, this body is almost certainly the Song family’s young lady. However… we still need to find Young Lady Song’s head. Perhaps when we find it, everything will be explained, including why the killer decapitated Young Lady Song.”
“What? It’s confirmed?!”
At this moment, Huo Huai Xin strode back, and seeing his question, Yan Chi handed over the examination report.
Huo Huai Xin took it, quickly scanned it, and sighed, “Ah, if possible, I truly wish the deceased wasn’t the Song family’s young lady.” Although this seemed to make the case more complex, as long as the victim wasn’t from the Song family, he wouldn’t have to be so wary of the Song Duke’s mansion. However, since Qin Wan had eliminated this possibility, he could only put his full effort into solving the case quickly.
“Young Lady Nine, I’ve already sent people to Ten Li Temple. The wedding procession stayed there the night before coming to Jin Zhou. Has Young Lady Nine made any discoveries?”
Qin Wan shook her head, “Without an autopsy, these are all the clues we can find. I hope they’re helpful to the Prefect.”
Huo Huai Xin quickly expressed his gratitude, “Yes, yes, they certainly are.”
Qin Wan pressed her lips together and added, “Also, the body has begun to decompose. If an autopsy is to be performed, the sooner the better to find more clues. Otherwise, even if we can perform one later, we won’t find much.”
Huo Huai Xin smiled bitterly, “I understand this principle, but…”
He trailed off, but Qin Wan understood. She nodded without saying more and began tidying the table. Looking at the wedding dress nearby, she suggested, “Let’s not put the wedding dress back on. A hemp garment will do.”
Huo Huai Xin and Xu He had been thinking the same thing and quickly instructed Kuan Shu outside to find spare hemp clothing.
Meanwhile, Xu He had prepared water for Qin Wan in the outer room. Qin Wan walked out, letting out a light breath, first washing her gloves before cleaning her hands. Fu Ling came in from outside, her eyes red as she watched her mistress, helping her wash while saying, “Young Lady, I’m truly useless.”
Qin Wan laughed, “It’s normal for your first time. I don’t think you’re useless. After getting sick once, it’ll be better next time. Why don’t you go back in for another look?”
Fu Ling didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, “Young Lady, why tease me? I nearly vomited up my bile.” Then her expression brightened, “But next time I’ll be many times better than now!”
Qin Wan responded with an “Mm,” saying, “I’ll take your word for it!”
Fu Ling, weak from vomiting, saw Qin Wan’s expression and huffed somewhat defiantly. As she turned, she noticed Kuan Shu standing at the side hall entrance, staring at them with a deep gaze.
Fu Ling knew Kuan Shu’s identity, but whether due to his appearance or his gaze, seeing him standing there startled her. She froze, and Qin Wan turned to see Kuan Shu as well.
Perhaps from years of guarding the mortuary, Kuan Shu had an eerie calmness that others lacked, as if spending too much time with the dead had left him touched by death itself. Seeing him watching her, Qin Wan stepped forward, “What is it?”
Kuan Shu lowered his eyes, his face expressionless, asking in a dry voice, “Has Young Lady been to the mortuary before?”
Qin Wan paused, then shook her head, “No.”
Kuan Shu raised his head, giving Qin Wan a strange look for a moment before lowering his head again, “When this humble servant saw Young Lady enter earlier, it felt as if Young Lady belonged here naturally as if Young Lady were already one of this place’s people.”
This was a mortuary – only the dead belonged here.
Qin Wan’s heart trembled slightly, but her face remained calm as she smiled, “Perhaps it’s because I treat and save people, and don’t believe in ghosts and spirits, so I’m not afraid.”
Kuan Shu said no more, closing the side hall door and carrying his lamp deeper into the mortuary.
Watching his black hemp clothing disappear around the corner, Qin Wan had to press her lips together hard to suppress her unease.
“Young Lady Nine! Grandmother is still waiting for you, let’s return to the Marquis’s mansion!”
Yue Qing’s voice brought Qin Wan back to her senses. She turned, steadied her breathing, and walked out with measured steps. She didn’t head directly to the carriage but went to Huo Huai Xin, who was giving instructions to the servants.
Seeing Qin Wan approach, Huo Huai Xin quickly said, “Young Lady Nine, is there something else to instruct?”
Qin Wan considered briefly, “May I have a word with the Prefect in private?”
A gleam of concentration flashed in Huo Huai Xin’s eyes as he quickly stepped aside. Qin Wan followed, speaking softly, “There was one discovery earlier that I didn’t record in the examination report. It’s somewhat special, and since I’m not sure if it’s related to the case, I thought it better to tell you privately. You have the clearest understanding of the entire case, so please judge for yourself.”
Huo Huai Xin was surprised, “What did Young Lady Nine discover?”
Qin Wan leaned in and quickly explained about the teeth marks. Sure enough, Huo Huai Xin’s eyes widened.
After a slight pause, Qin Wan continued, “There’s one more thing. You probably remember that night when someone pretended to be a ghost and frightened people at the Marquis’s mansion.”
Huo Huai Xin raised his eyebrows, and Qin Wan said, “Actually, I was the one who was frightened that day.”
Huo Huai Xin was stunned by these successive revelations, but Qin Wan continued, “That night, I found a small stain on the sleeve of the wedding dress. At the time, I thought it was just moss from the back wall, but later I learned that Young Lady Song’s wedding dress was made of Xiao Hong Sha from the capital. This silk is very precious and has a special characteristic – ordinary stains aren’t visible on it, only ink stains leave permanent marks.”
Huo Huai Xin’s eye twitched, and Qin Wan added, “So, that mark on the wedding dress must have been an ink stain.”
A scene suddenly flashed through Huo Huai Xin’s mind, his expression changing notably. Qin Wan saw this but didn’t ask further, only saying, “I’m just telling you what I discovered, Prefect. The truth of the matter depends on your investigation.”
After finishing, Qin Wan curtseyed and turned to walk toward the waiting carriage.
Yan Chi strode down the steps. Seeing Qin Wan’s actions, he knew what she was doing. Besides Huo Huai Xin, only he knew about the teeth marks. Though it seemed like a small matter, it gave Yan Chi an inexplicable feeling of joy.
This scene wasn’t only witnessed by Yan Chi but also by Huo Ning. Still in a daze, he stood lost at the mortuary entrance. As soon as Qin Wan left, he rushed forward, “Father, what did she say?”
Though Huo Huai Xin heard Huo Ning’s question, he pretended not to, instead smiling and waving at the departing carriage, “Safe journey, Marquis! We’ll inform you once we have news. Thank you, Young Lady Nine—”
Only after the carriage had traveled more than ten zhang did the smile fade from Huo Huai Xin’s face.
He turned, fixing Huo Ning with a cold stare, “You unfilial son, what’s wrong with you today? Why were you so discourteous to Young Lady Nine? And in front of the Marquis and Prince Chi, you truly…”
“Father, I just want to know what she told you just now?”
Huo Huai Xin was so angry he started breathing heavily, “From now on, you’re forbidden from involving yourself in this case. If you’re not ashamed, I certainly am! I’d heard rumors that Young Lady Nine had feelings for you, but today I finally understand – how could you compare to the Marquis’s Second Young Master, let alone Prince Chi! I was foolish to think of having your mother visit the Qin residence…”
Huo Ning was already full of humiliation, but he never expected to receive such a scolding from his father. Now hearing this, he understood why his father had always asked about the Qin family’s affairs – so this was his intention!
Huo Ning’s face flushed red as he shouted, “What does Father intend to do? Don’t tell me you want to arrange a marriage with the Qin family?!”
Seeing his son nearly going mad, Huo Huai Xin grew even more furious, feeling his son wouldn’t listen to reason at all, “What of it? What’s wrong with wanting to arrange a marriage?! Young Lady Nine’s character and appearance are more than you deserve! We’re all counting on Young Lady Nine’s help with this case, and look at you! You can’t even show proper restraint in front of her!”
Huo Ning had initially planned to accomplish something to impress Qin Wan, but now knowing she was that expert, he realized that even if he solved the case, she might not think highly of him. Huo Huai Xin’s sharp words had stripped away his dignity, and in his anger, Huo Ning recklessly retorted—
“Who wants to marry her? A woman who knows how to perform autopsies and examine corpses, who knows where she learned such vulgar skills – does she have any qualities of a proper lady? Forget about seeking her hand in marriage, even if she knelt before me begging me to marry her, I wouldn’t want to look at her! You won’t let me be involved? Fine, I’m glad to be free of it!”
After his outburst, Huo Ning stormed off. Fei Quan and Nan Feng, who hadn’t dared to breathe, hurriedly followed him. Huo Huai Xin stood rooted to the spot, watching Huo Ning’s retreating figure until his vision nearly darkened with rage, “This… this wretched child!”
……
……
Fu Ling applied fragrant balm to Qin Wan’s hands, then looked at her in surprise, “Young Lady wasn’t scared at all. I felt sick just looking once, and when I think of that funeral hall scene, it still gives me chills. How did Young Lady…”
“Fu Ling, do you know what life and death mean?”
Fu Ling looked at Qin Wan with clear eyes, and Qin Wan continued slowly, “There are no great matters in this world except life and death. Those who have experienced the boundary between life and death, let alone ghosts and spirits, might remain calmer than others even with someone holding a knife before them.”
Fu Ling wasn’t entirely convinced, “But at that time, I also…”
Before she could finish, Fu Ling’s face reddened, but her righteous expression made Qin Wan laugh. She smiled, “That’s why you should think – if you dared to face death that day, what is there to fear now?”
Fu Ling tilted her head, truly considering Qin Wan’s words. After a moment, she sighed, “Young Lady is Young Lady indeed. Young Lady used to be so reserved, but now you’re so different. I’m truly destined to be a servant, without Young Lady’s enlightened perspective.”
Qin Wan shook her head and smiled, but Fu Ling snorted lightly, “We didn’t expect Young Master Huo to be there today. However much he looked down on Young Lady before, that’s how uncomfortable he must feel today. I saw it clearly – Young Master Huo was stunned! He never thought our Young Lady had hidden such skills, let alone that Young Lady is so talented that even her father needs her help now.”
Thinking of Huo Ning, Qin Wan felt no particular emotion. Judging by Huo Ning’s expression today, he must have suffered quite a torment in his heart. Since that was the case, his past affairs with the Ninth Young Lady could be considered settled.
The carriage moved steadily. Qin Wan had left in the early morning, and by the time the carriage stopped at the Marquis’s mansion, it was already noon.
As soon as the carriage stopped, Yue Qing’s voice rang out, “Quickly inform the Old Madam and Madam that Young Lady Nine has arrived.”
Yue Qing was obviously in high spirits, even smiling when Yue Rong alighted from the carriage. Yan Chi dismounted and, seeing Qin Wan emerge from the carriage, raised his eyebrows slightly.
The group entered the mansion one after another, heading straight for Princess Tai’s small courtyard.
Yue Rong walked in front, while Yue Qing followed closely behind Qin Wan, saying, “Grandmother woke up yesterday, though she was still very weak then. Early this morning, before dawn, she woke again and could speak. Young Lady Nine’s medicine is truly remarkable.”
Qin Wan’s lips curved slightly, “Although Princess Tai was in great danger this time, it was her own strong will that helped her pull through. Medicine alone wouldn’t have been enough.”
Yue Qing nodded and smiled, “Young Lady Nine, please don’t be so modest. Your medical skills surpass even Divine Doctor Huang’s, and not only are your medical skills exceptional, but you also… Young Lady Nine truly makes people see you in a new light.”
Fu Ling, following behind Qin Wan, covered her mouth and laughed – the Marquis’s Second Young Master’s enthusiasm for her Young Lady was so obvious!
“Qing’er, we’re almost there, stop chattering.”
Yue Rong had noticed Yue Qing’s unusual warmth and hurriedly called out from ahead.
Yue Qing responded with a smile and quickly walked to the courtyard entrance, “Mother, Young Lady Nine is here—”
As soon as he spoke, a figure flashed out of the courtyard door. Madam Jiang emerged with a smile, “Wan’er, you’ve finally arrived!”
Madam Jiang was as warm as ever, stepping forward to take Qin Wan’s hand. Before Qin Wan could curtsey, she led her into the courtyard, “Mother has been thinking of you for a long time.” She looked Qin Wan up and down, “You must be tired again today?”
Madam Jiang knew about asking Qin Wan to examine the corpse and asked with concern.
Qin Wan quickly shook her head, “No, no, thank you for your concern, Madam. Everything went smoothly.”
Madam Jiang smiled and patted her hand, speaking softly, “Mother woke up before dawn today and was in surprisingly good spirits. When she learned that Qing’er’s matter was resolved, she insisted on asking about it. I couldn’t hold back, so I told her everything. Don’t worry, Mother is an open-minded person. If she asks you about it later, just speak truthfully.”
From the moment Qin Wan decided to help Yue Qing, she hadn’t planned to hide anything from Princess Tai, so this didn’t surprise her.
Qin Wan followed Madam Jiang into the inner chamber and immediately saw Princess Tai sitting up against her pillows. Qin Wan hurried forward to curtsey, “Greetings to Princess Tai—”
“Rise, rise, come here to me quickly.”
Princess Tai still looked ill, but compared to when Qin Wan first came that day, she was worlds better. Qin Wan took a few steps forward, and Princess Tai pulled her to sit beside her. Her weakened hand gripped Qin Wan tightly, but she didn’t speak immediately, instead looking Qin Wan up and down for a moment before nodding, “Good, good, worthy indeed of my high regard!”
After a slight pause, Princess Tai asked softly, “How did it go today?”
Seeing Princess Tai’s wrinkled face full of careful concern, Qin Wan smiled slightly and replied quietly, “There were some small discoveries today that should be of help to the Prefect. Once there’s news, the Prefect will inform Princess Tai.”
The sight of the young and old speaking in hushed tones made both Madam Jiang and Green Sleeve laugh. Madam Jiang stepped forward, “Mother shouldn’t worry about these things now. Wan’er, come check her pulse first.”
Qin Wan also smiled, “Princess Tai’s health is paramount. Let me check your pulse.”
Princess Tai sat up straight, her expression benevolent, “It’s fine, I can feel it myself. After taking Wan’er’s medicine, I’ve improved greatly, just the wound still hurts a bit…”
Madam Jiang chided gently, “Mother since you know it hurts, you should stay lying down.”
Princess Tai exhaled, “Lying down all the time is uncomfortable too. That day, I thought I would just keep lying there until the end, but who knew, Wan’er would save my life…”
Princess Tai’s tone was full of emotion, her gaze at Qin Wan filled with affection.
Qin Wan smiled gently, focusing on taking Princess Tai’s pulse. After a moment, she withdrew her hand and said, “Please lie down, Princess Tai, let me check your wound.”
“Mm, alright…”
Seeing Princess Tai comply while responding, Madam Jiang’s reproach grows stronger, “See? Mother won’t listen to any of us, but one word from Wan’er, and she obeys so readily…”
Since they were checking on the patient first, Yue Rong and the others hadn’t entered the inner chamber. Qin Wan undid Princess Tai’s clothes and examined her before finally sighing in relief, “The wound shows initial healing, and your pulse has stabilized. I’ll prescribe a new prescription for Princess Tai to take for seven days, and we’ll change to a new prescription after the first scab falls off.”
Then Qin Wan smiled and added, “Princess Tai indeed shouldn’t sit for long periods now, Madam’s concern is very important.”
Princess Tai glanced at Madam Jiang, “See? She’s speaking on your behalf. Well then, I’ll lie down.”
The room was filled with harmony. After covering Princess Tai with the blanket, Yue Rong and the others came in from outside. Seeing Yue Rong enter, Princess Tai said, “Later, you must send Wan’er back properly. In the future, with such matters, remember not to let the word spread. If it damages Wan’er’s reputation, I’ll hold you responsible!”
Yue Rong had already been extremely careful, and hearing Princess Tai’s instruction, he quickly agreed, “Mother, please rest assured. Prince Chi personally escorted her here, and naturally, we’ll ensure she returns safely.”
“Oh?” Princess Tai glanced at Yan Chi standing in the back, “Little Seven, you went to escort her?”
Yan Chi stepped forward, smiling cheerfully, “Yes, since the Marquis and Prefect couldn’t appear personally, and I’m from the capital, saying I came on your orders to escort someone from the Qin family couldn’t be questioned.”
Thinking about it, Princess Tai couldn’t help but appreciate Yan Chi’s thoughtfulness. If Yue Qing or Yue Jia had gone, being from Jin Zhou, it might have caused gossip. Yan Chi was different – his superior status could also lend prestige to Qin Wan.
Princess Tai collected her thoughts, “Very well, continue to escort Wan’er back later!”
Princess Tai understood Qin Wan’s situation in the Qin family best and wanted to help her establish a firm footing there, so she thought to use Yan Chi’s status. However, she didn’t know that Yan Chi had figured out her intentions and was happy to be used by her.
“Yes, Grand Aunt, rest assured, I’ll personally escort Young Lady Nine back.”
Princess Tai exhaled, holding Qin Wan’s hand, and asked, “I heard the First Madam of the Qin family isn’t well?”
A shadow passed through Qin Wan’s eyes, “Yes, a few days ago, my Sister-in-law went home to visit her family. On the way back, she probably overexerted herself and had some bleeding. She’s currently recovering.”
Qin Wan spread her hands, her face completely natural, “I’ve barely seen him a few times before, how could I like him? I don’t know who in the mansion spread such talk, but no wonder the Princess misunderstood.”
Hearing this, Yue Ning nodded with satisfaction, “That’s more like it. What Prefect’s son? I see him as nothing but an idle noble who only knows how to compose frivolous poetry. He even seems quite arrogant – how could he be worthy of you!”
Amusement flickered in Qin Wan’s eyes, “Speaking of which, Princess has reached that age. Are the Marquis and Madam planning to arrange a marriage for you? I wonder what kind of person the Princess favors?”
Hearing this, Yue Ning wasn’t embarrassed but shook her head, “After the mess with Big Brother’s marriage, Mother will certainly keep me for two more years. As for the kind of person I would like, well, first, they must be able to defeat me in combat!”
Qin Wan laughed genuinely at this. In her childhood, she had traveled with her father between posts, moving to a new place almost every two years. Consequently, she had never stayed in one place long enough to make close female friends.
After returning to the capital, she occasionally accompanied her mother to socialize with noble ladies, but those capital ladies were all extremely proud. When they went out, they only discussed family lineage, ancestral glory, and court factions. Though her father held the prestigious position of Third Rank Minister of Justice, his influence couldn’t compare to those of dukes and generals. Moreover, her father came from a humble background without connections or factional allegiances, so those noble ladies naturally avoided deep friendships with her, let alone becoming close confidantes.
After several such experiences, she lost interest in making friends. Except for necessary occasions, she rarely accepted invitations to flower parties or tea gatherings. Rather than engage in false pleasantries with such people, she preferred reading the case files on her father’s desk.
Looking at Yue Ning now, Qin Wan experienced for the first time the feeling of having a close female friend.
The two chatted for a long while until at one point, Yue Ning’s maid Lu Qi entered, “Young Lady, Prince Chi has sent someone to say it’s getting late and Young Lady Nine should return home.”
Yue Ning looked at the sky outside and frowned, “Isn’t it still early?”
Qin Wan laughed, “I’ll be coming back these next few days anyway – Princess Tai’s illness still requires attention. Please don’t mind, Princess. Next time I come, we can discuss the case more.”
Yue Ning sighed, then warned, “Prince Chi has quite a reputation in the western regions. You must be careful around him. They say when he’s angry, he shows no mercy even to relatives, and even enemies fear him. Don’t be fooled by his well-behaved appearance before Grandmother – his thoughts run deep and his methods are ruthless beyond ordinary measure.”
Qin Wan’s smile deepened, “Yes, I understand. Don’t worry, Princess.”
Yue Ning frowned deeply, “I’m truly not at ease. Your nature is too gentle.”
Qin Wan laughed helplessly and made a few more reassurances before Yue Ning saw her out. Outside, Bai Feng was waiting and hurriedly bowed when she emerged, “Young Lady Nine, our Prince is already waiting at the mansion gate. Please—”
Qin Wan nodded, first bid farewell to Yue Ning, then went to the front courtyard to take leave of Madam Jiang before heading to the gate.
Qin Wan and Fu Ling walked in front with Bai Feng following. Though he was very much alive, his footsteps made no sound at all. Fu Ling feared Yan Chi, and by extension was somewhat afraid of Bai Feng as well, so she hunched her shoulders and stayed close to Qin Wan.
Outside the gate, only an elaborate large carriage was waiting.
Qin Wan blinked, looking around the carriage but seeing no sign of Yan Chi.
She turned back to look at the silently following Bai Feng, but he kept his head down, saying nothing.
Qin Wan raised an eyebrow – well, Yan Chi himself didn’t need to escort her. Bai Feng driving the carriage would suffice. Yan Chi was of noble status, and though he had come to Jin Zhou, seeing him frequently entering the study with Yue Rong showed he wasn’t entirely free of duties. Qin Wan exhaled and walked toward the carriage without question.
At the carriage, Qin Wan prepared to lift the curtain and enter, but upon raising it, she froze.
Inside the carriage, Yan Chi sat in magnificent black robes, imposing as a great Buddha in the dim light. He was leaning lazily against the carriage wall, and seeing the curtain lift, pressed his lips together, “Why so slow?”
Qin Wan held the curtain, still not having recovered from her surprise.
She had thought Yan Chi had left on business, but never imagined he would be sitting inside the carriage.
Though Great Zhou wasn’t strict about the separation between men and women, sharing a carriage was still inappropriate. They weren’t particularly close, and the Marquis’s mansion surely had spare carriages. Besides, hadn’t he ridden a horse this morning?
“Why are you just standing there?” Seeing Qin Wan motionless, Yan Chi spoke in a dark tone.
Though he was in the carriage behind the curtain, he had been aware of the situation outside. He noticed that when others weren’t present, she didn’t even ask a single question, as if his presence or absence made no difference.
Qin Wan came to her senses and smoothly entered the carriage.
With Yan Chi inside, Fu Ling naturally didn’t dare enter. She tremblingly sat on the shaft outside, curiously observing Bai Feng. After a while, Fu Ling sighed in relief, thinking this white-robed guard wasn’t as frightening as Prince Chi.
Bai Feng raised his whip, and the carriage wheels began to turn.
In the cramped, narrow carriage, Qin Wan tried to keep her back as straight as possible.
As Yue Ning had said, Yan Chi appeared well-behaved and pleasant before Princess Tai and the Yue couple, but Qin Wan understood that when he put on that appearance, the real Yan Chi stood aside watching coldly and distantly.
“You talked with Yue Ning for quite a while?”
The curtains were drawn all around, leaving the carriage interior dim and dark. Yan Chi’s face was hidden in shadowy darkness, his eyes profoundly deep. Qin Wan couldn’t read his mood, and his tone of voice was even more unfathomable.
“Yes, the Princess was very interested in the case and asked me some questions.”
“Is Han Yue still serving you well?” Yan Chi asked another question.
Qin Wan’s heart stirred slightly, and she nodded, “Not only Han Yue, but the protective gloves Your Highness gave me are also very suitable. Thank you, Your Highness.”
Yan Chi’s eyes narrowed slightly, and he paused without responding.
Qin Wan’s eye twitched, suddenly feeling that Yan Chi seemed somewhat angry, but she had just been expressing gratitude and praise – where did this anger come from? Though the question arose in Qin Wan’s mind, she couldn’t make sense of it.
“Do you remember these were your medical fees?”
It was only after Qin Wan had been stunned for a while that Yan Chi spoke, his tone two degrees darker, his anger more pronounced. With these words, a flash of understanding struck through Qin Wan’s mind!
Right, both the Su Wen Nine Needles and the protective gloves were medical fees Yan Chi had given her for treating his injury. But his wound would take at least half a month to heal, and as a doctor who had received such substantial fees, she should ensure her patient’s recovery.
Qin Wan took a shallow breath, “Your Highness’s wound… ahem, has Your Highness been using the prescription I gave?”
Qin Wan felt inexplicably embarrassed – after receiving such valuable medical fees, she had truly forgotten about his injury.
“Has Your Highness followed my instructions? Has the medicine on the wound been changed?”
Qin Wan asked somewhat carefully, feeling guilty. Yan Chi watched her narrowly for a moment before suddenly saying, “You said my wound would take half a month to heal?”
Qin Wan nodded, “Yes, Your Highness’s wound has reopened multiple times and is now quite serious.”
Yan Chi raised his chin, “I won’t be staying in Jin Zhou for long. You’d better have my wound fully healed within seven days.”
Qin Wan was slightly surprised. Though she knew Yan Chi wouldn’t stay long in Jin Zhou, learning he would only stay for seven more days was still surprising. Then, Qin Wan’s mind immediately became alert, “Seven days…”
Seeing her hesitation, Yan Chi’s voice deepened, “Not possible?”
Qin Wan shook her head, “No, it’s just that I need to study this thoroughly. The prescription I gave Your Highness already accelerates wound healing. To make it faster, we’ll need different prescriptions. I need to think about it.”
Hearing this, Yan Chi neither agreed nor disagreed, “You have time to think about it.”
Qin Wan nodded, lowering her gaze to contemplate.
Though she had told Yue Ning about natural talent earlier, in reality, she was far from naturally gifted. When she first followed her father, he hadn’t deliberately taught her – she had put in considerable effort on her own. Later, when she became an apprentice under Medicine King Sun Xi, it was her studious nature that earned the Medicine King’s attention and acceptance as a disciple.
She hadn’t personally treated many patients, but for every condition she encountered, she made sure to understand it thoroughly. As a result, her medical skills surpassed those of doctors who had been practicing for many years. Now that Yan Chi had presented her with this challenge, it naturally aroused her long-dormant research spirit.
Seeing the flickering light in Qin Wan’s eyes and her thoughtful expression, Yan Chi’s pressed lips unconsciously relaxed.
The current Qin Wan possessed a special kind of focus, one that carried an aloof, unapproachable coldness that kept the world at bay. Yet compared to her meticulous coldness when examining corpses, this had an added touch of gentleness, like a clear, bright moon on a winter night. It almost involuntarily drew his gaze again and again, and miraculously, it calmed his heart, making him realize for the first time that watching someone lost in thought could be such a beautiful thing.
Qin Wan strongly disliked being disturbed when concentrating deeply on something, and Yan Chi seemed to share some kind of understanding with her, remaining silent throughout the journey. By the time the carriage stopped at the west side gate of the Qin residence, Qin Wan had reviewed all the medical texts she knew in her mind, and when she came to her senses, she didn’t know how long the carriage had been stopped.
“Hmm? We’re here?” Looking out through the curtain, they had indeed arrived at the side gate of the Qin residence.
Qin Wan’s expression became serious, “Rest assured, Your Highness, I will have a new prescription ready tomorrow—”
After saying this, Qin Wan turned and lifted the curtain. Between the rise and fall of the curtain, she had disappeared.
Yan Chi’s brows furrowed tightly, feeling a subtle irritation and loss in his heart. Just as he felt his heart slowly sinking, suddenly, the curtain was lifted again, and Qin Wan’s face appeared at the carriage door. She said sternly, “Your Highness should avoid riding horses these days, please use the carriage instead, and don’t practice martial arts. Please remember this.”
Yan Chi’s brows smoothed, and he gave an extremely casual “Mm.”
Qin Wan nodded, then finally let the curtain fall and left.
Yan Chi waited a moment until Qin Wan’s footsteps had faded away, before lifting the curtain. Through the gap, he watched Qin Wan’s retreating figure, like a graceful lotus in an ink painting, flash once before disappearing behind the Qin residence gates.
Yan Chi’s hand paused, and the curtain slowly fell.
After a long while, Bai Feng outside asked, “Master, where shall we go?”
In the carriage, Yan Chi slowly sat up straight, suddenly asking, “Where is Bai Ying?”
Bai Feng was slightly startled, seemingly surprised by Yan Chi’s question, and immediately lowered his voice, “Bai Ying arrived in Jin Zhou two days ago and is still tracking those people’s movements. Does Your Highness have instructions?”
Yan Chi narrowed his eyes, “Stop the investigation for now. I want her to protect someone.”
Bai Feng hesitated again, uncertainly asking, “Your Highness means… Young Lady Nine?”
Silence filled the carriage. Yan Chi didn’t answer yes or no. After a moment, his voice came cold and forceful, “She must be protected at all costs.”
……
……
In Ting Lan Courtyard, Qin Wan had already written more than ten new prescriptions.
Fu Ling brought Qin Wan a cup of hot tea, saying concernedly, “Young Lady has been writing prescriptions since returning. It’s almost dark – don’t strain your eyes. Why not rest a while?”
Qin Wan’s intense focus softened slightly as she put down her brush, though her brows remained tightly furrowed.
Fu Ling hurried forward, “What’s wrong, Young Lady? Having difficulties?”
She peered at the papers, seeing only unfamiliar medicine names, “Bai Ji, Hu Zhang, Xiang Wood, Astragalus… Red Peony… Small Thistle, Green Tangerine Peel… Young Lady, what are all these prescriptions for?”
Qin Wan lifted the teacup, taking a small sip to moisten her throat, “They’re all for reducing swelling, relieving pain, and healing wounds.”
Fu Ling nodded, “Young Lady’s prescriptions all contain Bai Ji and these few medicines, but they’re not entirely the same. Is Young Lady uncertain?”
Qin Wan sighed. Her mind was filled with images of the ghastly wound on Yan Chi’s back. His injury was extremely severe – with ordinary prescriptions, it would heal given time, but he said he would only be in Jin Zhou for seven days. Healing his wound in seven days was too rushed, but since he made this request, she naturally had to find a way to fulfill it.
“Yes, I’m uncertain, and there’s no time for trials.”
Fu Ling stepped forward to massage Qin Wan’s shoulders and neck, “Young Lady has been thinking and writing since returning this afternoon. I believe all these prescriptions must have great use. If Young Lady really can’t decide, why not choose the one you’re most confident about?”
Qin Wan exhaled – her experience was still too limited. Otherwise, she could quickly judge which prescription would be most effective. “I’m not particularly confident about any of them. There are common ones, but right now, the common ones aren’t strong enough.”
Speaking thus, Qin Wan looked troubledly at the night falling outside the window. When you take someone’s payment, you’re obligated to them – if she couldn’t meet Yan Chi’s requirements this time, she would be failing to earn these medical fees.
“Decided! I’ll use this one!” Qin Wan picked up one prescription with rather potent medicines – truly an unorthodox approach. In her medical practice, she usually used gentle, safe methods, and this was her first time writing such a prescription. But only this way could Yan Chi’s wound heal quickly. Qin Wan exhaled and suddenly stood up, “Let’s buy medicine.”
Fu Ling was surprised, “Buy medicine? But it’s dark, Young Lady—”
Qin Wan smiled wryly, thinking of Yan Chi’s profound, inscrutable manner, and said helplessly, “I know it’s late, but if we don’t prepare the medicine tonight, I won’t be able to deliver tomorrow.”
Fu Ling grabbed her arm, “Young Lady, why not get medicine from the mansion’s pharmacy?”
Qin Wan paused – that wasn’t impossible. Previously, when making pills for Yao Xin Lan, they had used medicine from the mansion’s pharmacy. However, now it was for Yan Chi, and she wasn’t sure if the pharmacy would provide the medicines.
“Is Young Lady worried the pharmacy won’t give us medicine?” Having shared hard times with Qin Wan, Fu Ling understood her concerns best, but said, “Young Lady, things are different now. Let’s try – perhaps they’ll let us take the medicine?”
Qin Wan looked at the darkened sky outside and felt tempted – yes, trying wouldn’t hurt.
Thinking this, she nodded, “Alright, let’s try.”
Fu Ling responded, grabbed a cloak to put on Qin Wan, took a lamp, and followed her out of Ting Lan Courtyard’s gate.
The wealthy Qin residence had its physician and pharmacy. Qin Wan led Fu Ling out of the courtyard and headed east, soon arriving at a row of low buildings. The pharmacy was located in a small courtyard behind these buildings.
Medicines were always precious items, so guards were posted at the courtyard entrance. When Qin Wan arrived, two male servants were drowsily sitting on stone steps, bored. Hearing movement, they opened their eyes, and seeing Qin Wan, they first froze, then seemed to remember something and stood up with changed expressions, “Ninth… Ninth Young Lady—”
Qin Wan spoke directly, “Is the physician in?”
“Yes, yes, what does Ninth Young Lady need?”
Seeing their respectful attitude, Qin Wan said directly, “I need some medicines.”
The two immediately smiled, bowing, “Please enter, Ninth Young Lady. The Master just instructed today that whatever Ninth Young Lady needs must be provided. The Young Master also ordered earlier that whatever medicines you want, you may choose.”
Qin Wan was inwardly surprised but showed nothing outwardly, walking in while thinking of Third Uncle whom she had seen today.
Just from his complexion, Qin Wan could tell his reputation for debauchery was true. Though barely forty, he looked completely drained. At this rate, his health would collapse within a year, and he might develop other serious illnesses. However, despite his indulgence in sensual pleasures, his desire for power remained keen. Just seeing Yan Chi visit once and discovering her various connections with the An Yang Marquis’s mansion caused such quick changes.
As Qin Wan crossed the threshold, one servant had already run ahead to the main hall. Soon, a man in his thirties hurried out to meet them. Before he got close, Fu Ling whispered from behind, “Young Lady, this is Doctor Qian from the mansion, the one who charged extortionate prices when you were ill and needed medicine.”
“Ninth Young Lady has come! Are you here for medicines?”
Qian Bai Ren maintained a smiling face, his tone extremely cautious, perhaps from guilt.
Qin Wan looked him over. At Qian Bai Ren’s age, he should be in his prime for studying medicine, yet he had settled early into the comfortable life of a household physician. Seeing his somewhat corpulent figure, Qin Wan laughed coldly inside.
There were too many people in this world who fawned on the powerful and bullied the weak, and even among physicians, such mercenary people weren’t rare.
Qin Wan nodded imperceptibly, and Qian Bai Ren became even more respectful, “What medicines does Ninth Young Lady need? Though the mansion’s pharmacy doesn’t stock large quantities of each item, we have all the common medicines. Does Ninth Young Lady have a prescription? Give it to me, and I’ll fetch the medicines for you…”
While speaking, Qian Bai Ren secretly observed Qin Wan. At one point, Qin Wan suddenly looked at him, making his heart tighten with the guilty fear of being seen through. He wanted to see Qin Wan’s prescription to judge her medical skills and perhaps learn something in the process.
Qin Wan’s gaze was cold, carrying an inviolable dignity. Qian Bai Ren felt somewhat panicked and quickly smiled, “Or I could guide Ninth Young Lady to select them yourself, choosing whatever quantities you need.”
“No need.” Qin Wan spoke coolly, taking out the prescription from her sleeve.
Seeing Qin Wan hand the prescription to Qian Bai Ren, Fu Ling’s eyes widened – even she knew Qian Bai Ren wanted to steal knowledge, so why was Young Lady giving him the prescription?!
Looking at the prescription before him, Qian Bai Ren’s eyes lit up as he took it with both hands. After a glance, he became even more eager, “Please wait a moment, Ninth Young Lady. I’ll fetch the medicines right away…”
The pharmacy had two sections – the main hall was just for receiving patients and consultations, while the actual medicine storage was in the back. Qin Wan stood outside, showing no intention of entering. Fu Ling watched Qian Bai Ren direct a servant to the back and said painfully, “Young Lady, why did you give him the prescription? Your medical skills are excellent, so this prescription must be precious – why let him see it?”
Qin Wan looked at Fu Ling’s anxious expression with a deep smile, “In medicine, there are indeed precious prescriptions, but this one doesn’t count as one. Besides, he probably won’t understand it anyway.”
Fu Ling seemed half-understanding, but seeing Qin Wan’s confident manner and the hint of cunning in her eyes, she immediately relaxed, “Phew… Young Lady, you… I thought you hadn’t considered this. This Doctor Qian is so opportunistic – we can’t let him steal Young Lady’s knowledge!”
Qin Wan sighed, “Don’t worry, I’m not who I was before.”
Fu Ling’s lips curved up, her almond eyes full of sincerity, “No matter how Young Lady is, I’ll always follow you. I just care about Young Lady and don’t want bad people to take advantage.”
Qin Wan’s heart warmed, “I know, and I won’t tolerate bad people either.”
Fu Ling nodded repeatedly. Just then, footsteps sounded from behind, and Qian Bai Ren emerged still smiling, carrying several medicine packages, “Ninth Young Lady, here are all the medicines you requested.”
He paused slightly, then asked casually, “Who is this prescription for?”
Fu Ling took the medicine packages, and Qin Wan retrieved her prescription, saying coolly, “That’s none of your concern.”
She paused, then added, “Add one tael of musk.”
Musk wasn’t written on the prescription. Qian Bai Ren’s smile faltered, and he said somewhat embarrassedly, “Ninth Young Lady came too late. Four days ago, a maid from the Young Master’s quarters took all the musk in the mansion, saying the Young Master has been tired from writing and often feels dizzy. There was less than one tael left that day, and it was all taken.”
Qin Wan’s eyelid twitched violently, “A maid from the Young Master’s quarters took it?”
Qian Bai Ren didn’t notice Qin Wan’s reaction and nodded, “Yes, indeed. If Ninth Young Lady isn’t in a hurry, the mansion’s storehouse will purchase more in a day or two. If it’s urgent, we can send someone to buy it tomorrow morning.”
Qin Wan’s heart was racing wildly. She nodded vaguely and turned to leave.
Qian Bai Ren wanted to ask more, but Qin Wan walked so quickly that he had no chance. Thinking of the prescription he had just seen, Qian Bai Ren frowned in concentration, “What was it treating…”
“Young Lady, please slow down—”
Qin Wan had rushed out of the courtyard gate in one breath, only slowing down at Fu Ling’s call. The cool autumn night wind hit her face, and only then did Qin Wan come to her senses. She clutched her sleeve tightly as Yao Xin Lan’s terrified, fearful eyes appeared in her mind. Someone had put musk in her medicine, and coincidentally, Qin Chen had sent someone to take all the musk from the mansion.
Musk indeed had properties for clearing channels and awakening consciousness, treating internal heat and dizziness, but could it be such a coincidence?
Thinking of how Yao Xin Lan knew someone was drugging her but didn’t tell Qin Chen and Madam Jiang, Qin Wan felt Qin Chen’s gentle, harmonious image suddenly overshadowed by a heavy darkness.
“Young Lady, when Doctor Qian asked you earlier, why didn’t you just make something up?”
Fu Ling stepped forward, clearly showing extreme dislike for Doctor Qian.
Qin Wan glanced at her, “Why should I make something up for him?”
Fu Ling snorted angrily, “He surely wanted to steal your knowledge. If Young Lady told him something false, when he tries to treat himself with the wrong medicines later, he’d suffer the consequences.”
Qin Wan frowned, “But what if he uses the wrong medicine on others?”
Fu Ling was momentarily speechless, “That—”
Qin Wan’s expression became serious, “Fu Ling, medical knowledge isn’t meant to be used to harm people.”
Frightened by Qin Wan’s stern look, Fu Ling hurriedly said, “I wouldn’t dare harm people, I just… just wanted to teach Doctor Qian a lesson. Before, he left us to die and took advantage to profit…”
Qin Wan shook her head, “Even if you hate someone deeply, you can’t use such methods.”
“Then… what if Young Lady is dealing with criminals?”
Qin Wan’s voice deepened, “If someone can be killed with a blade, I won’t use medicine.”
Fu Ling mumbled, “I understand now, I was thinking wrongly…”
Qin Wan said nothing more, just walking thoughtfully toward Ting Lan Courtyard. Though she didn’t plan to get involved in the Qin family’s troubled waters, if she knew who was poisoning Yao Xin Lan, she couldn’t help but intervene. Otherwise, Yao Xin Lan and her unborn child would likely be in danger. But was it Qin Chen?
Why would Qin Chen drug Yao Xin Lan? Why would he harm his child?
Moreover, it was Qin Chen who told her Yao Xin Lan might be developing mental illness…
Qin Wan couldn’t make sense of it all, feeling that this outwardly prosperous Qin residence concealed unknown evils. She even had a premonition that what she currently knew and saw might only be the tip of the iceberg.
“Young Master—”
As they approached Ting Lan Courtyard, Fu Ling’s excited whisper interrupted Qin Wan’s thoughts. Qin Wan looked up to see Qin Chen standing before the courtyard gate, apparently waiting for them.
Qin Wan quickly composed herself, stepped forward, and curtseyed, “Elder Brother—”
Qin Chen looked Qin Wan over, then noticed the medicine packages in Fu Ling’s hands, “What’s this? You went to the pharmacy?”
“Yes,” Qin Wan replied calmly. “I went to the Marquis’s mansion today and need to prepare some medicine pills for Princess Tai.”
Qin Chen nodded, “That’s what I came to ask about. Have things been going smoothly these past days at the Marquis’s mansion treating Princess Tai?”
“Smoothly. Princess Tai’s condition has improved greatly.”
Qin Chen showed a gratified smile, “That’s good. Now I finally don’t have to worry about you.”
After her earlier reflections, Qin Wan felt unmoved by Qin Chen’s words. She merely curved her lips slightly, “Not at all. Qin Wan still needs Elder Brother’s care.” She continued, “Today Princess Tai mentioned Elder Brother, saying Elder Brother has a good reputation in Jin Zhou, and if needed in the future, she could help write a letter of recommendation to the capital.”
Qin Chen’s breath tightened, a flash of light passing through his eyes, “This, this is all thanks to Ninth Sister.”
Qin Wan laughed lightly, “Of course not. Elder Brother’s reputation precedes him, otherwise, Princess Tai wouldn’t be willing to intervene.”
On the cool autumn night, Qin Wan unconsciously pulled her cloak tighter. Seeing this, Qin Chen said concernedly, “Why did you go get medicine yourself so late at night?” He glanced at the empty Ting Lan Courtyard, “You’re still short-handed here. Tomorrow, I’ll have Mother select some maids to send over. Fu Ling alone isn’t enough.”
Qin Wan hesitated to speak, but Qin Chen said warmly, “You’re a young lady of the Qin family. You should have more servants at your disposal. How can you do everything yourself? Doesn’t that diminish your status?”
Qin Wan smiled bitterly, “Then I’ll leave it to Elder Brother’s arrangement.”
Only then did Qin Chen’s expression relax into a smile, “Nothing else then. Since you’re frequenting the Marquis’s mansion, just be careful in everything.”
“Qin Wan understands. Thank you, Elder Brother.”
Qin Chen made an “mm” sound, “Alright, go in now. It’s getting cold.”
Qin Wan gave Qin Chen a deep look, nodded, and entered the courtyard.
Fu Ling, carrying the medicine packages, sighed, “In the entire Qin residence, only Young Master cares most about Young Lady.”
Qin Wan pressed her lips together without speaking. Entering the room, she ordered, “Open all the medicine packages. Let’s prepare the medicine tonight.”
Fu Ling exclaimed in surprise, “Since it’s for Princess Tai, surely there’s no need to rush? Young Lady has been tired all day and should rest. Princess Tai certainly won’t mind…”
If it were truly for Princess Tai, Qin Wan would have heeded Fu Ling’s words. But the one waiting for the medicine wasn’t Princess Tai, but rather a certain demon king who was about to leave Jin Zhou.
……
……
It had been many years since Qin Wan had worked so hard preparing medicine, but to justify the medical fees she’d received, she had no choice but to put in extra effort. By noon the next day, she had finished half the medicine.
“Have them prepare a carriage. We’ll go to the Marquis’s mansion.”
Qin Wan gave the order, and Fu Ling sighed beside her, “Young Lady has been working day and night for Princess Tai. No wonder Princess Tai is so fond of you.”
Qin Wan’s hand paused, about to explain, but then thought better of it.
Fu Ling left Ting Lan Courtyard, and Qin Wan began packing up the medicine salve she had made yesterday. Soon she heard Fu Ling’s returning footsteps.
“Young Lady, we don’t need to prepare a carriage! The gatekeepers say someone from the Marquis’s mansion has been waiting outside for a while.”
Qin Wan raised an eyebrow, “Waiting for a while? Why wasn’t I informed?”
Fu Ling was also surprised, “I wondered about that too. Young Lady, shall we go?”
Qin Wan’s expression settled as she picked up the medicine salve and nodded, “Let’s go now.”
Fu Ling helped Qin Wan put on her cloak, took the remaining medicine salve, and they left. Just outside, they met Mo Shu coming their way. Seeing them prepared to leave, Mo Shu looked slightly surprised, “Ninth Young Lady is going out?”
Qin Wan nodded, “Going to the Marquis’s mansion. How is Sister-in-law?”
Mo Shu’s face showed difficulty, “Our Lady is feeling somewhat restless. She wanted to ask Ninth Young Lady to come talk, but since you’re going to the Marquis’s mansion, please go ahead. When you return, please come to Lin Feng Courtyard to see our Lady.”
Qin Wan considered briefly, “Have your Lady continue taking my medicine. Prepare the decoction as before. I’ll come to see her when I return this afternoon.”
Mo Shu quickly agreed, and only then did Qin Wan leave.
Mo Shu’s eager gaze followed her back, and Qin Wan’s heart felt heavy.
The Qin residence was shrouded in mysterious fog. She shouldn’t rashly interfere in anything, yet she couldn’t stand by and watch Yao Xin Lan come to harm. She could only instruct Yao Xin Lan to be careful with medicine and only take the pills she made – that shouldn’t cause problems.
Steadying herself, Qin Wan strode toward the gate. As soon as she reached it, she saw Bai Feng standing there with a solemn expression.
Why was it Bai Feng again?
Yesterday Yan Chi had come to escort her because she was going to examine the corpse, but why had Bai Feng come today?
She didn’t think this white-robed guard had so much free time.
As Qin Wan pondered this, she had already walked out the gate. Seeing her, Bai Feng quickly bowed, “Greetings, Ninth Young Lady.”
Qin Wan raised her chin, “No need for formalities.” After a pause, she asked, “Did Princess Tai send you?”
Bai Feng hesitated, “Yes, and no…”
This response gave Qin Wan a clear understanding. She walked purposefully toward the carriage on the street, and for a moment, looking at the quietly hanging curtains, she suddenly wondered if Yan Chi was inside.
The curtain lifted to reveal an empty carriage.
Qin Wan froze, feeling a trace of emptiness sweep through her heart, like a pebble dropping into still water, causing only the faintest ripples before quickly returning to calm.
Qin Wan’s expression remained unchanged as she entered the carriage, her momentarily paused movement so slight even she didn’t notice it.
The carriage rolled on, taking nearly half an hour to travel from the east to the west of the city. Bai Feng drove very steadily, and Fu Ling happily chatted with Qin Wan, “Young Lady, things are truly different now. Just now when I went to the gatekeepers, they were very respectful to me.”
Qin Wan’s lips curved slightly, “That’s good.” After a pause, she added, “It will only get better.”
Fu Ling reminisced about various past events with some emotion, and Qin Wan’s expression became distant as she suddenly remembered her true past. Her father had mostly served in the western and northern regions, and she had traveled almost all of the magnificent landscapes of the northwest. Later, they came to the capital Lin’an, where the imperial city’s majestic atmosphere and hundred li of prosperity transformed her from a little scholar following her father to a sheltered official’s daughter.
Three years in the capital, her father held the stable position of Minister of Justice, while she visited Medicine Valley every six months. Her parents lived in harmony, and her medical skills advanced. Just as life seemed to be going as wished, the Prince Jin case appeared unexpectedly—
A favored imperial consort died tragically, and the murderer turned out to be an imperial prince. This scandalous royal case initially didn’t seem difficult for her father to handle, but from which day did her father’s brow begin to furrow more deeply, his face showing heavy worry and even hidden fear? Eventually, the situation deteriorated rapidly, and her father was listed as a serious criminal…
“Young Lady? We’ve arrived at the Marquis’s mansion—”
Fu Ling’s voice suddenly pulled Qin Wan back from her immersion in the past. Qin Wan’s expression was confused for a moment, then she looked again and indeed, they had arrived outside the An Yang Marquis’s mansion.
“Did Young Lady stay up too late last night?”
Fu Ling was somewhat worried, but Qin Wan shook her head and gathered herself, “I’m fine. Let’s go in.”
As soon as the carriage stopped, a servant went in to announce them.
Qin Wan entered with Fu Ling, Bai Feng still quietly following behind. As soon as they entered the gate, Qin Wan felt something was wrong. The An Yang Marquis’s mansion was unusually quiet today – the usual servants coming and going were nowhere to be seen. Soon, Lu Yun came from the direction of the inner courtyard, “Greetings to Ninth Young Lady. The Madam and Marquis are both with Princess Tai. This servant has come to escort you…”
Qin Wan showed a slight smile, “Why is the mansion so quiet today?”
Lu Yun sighed, “Ninth Young Lady doesn’t know, but early this morning the Prefect brought people to the mansion, saying there were discrepancies in the previous testimonies. Whether mansion servants or Song family escorts, all must be questioned again.”
Qin Wan raised an eyebrow – could this be because she mentioned the ink stains?
Qin Wan nodded and followed Lu Yun directly to Princess Tai’s courtyard. Just as they reached the entrance, they saw Yue Qing peering out from inside. Seeing Qin Wan arrive, he immediately came to welcome her, “Ninth Young Lady, Grandmother has been thinking of you since she woke up this morning.”
Qin Wan curtseyed, “I’m sorry to have worried Princess Tai.”
Yue Qing led Qin Wan inside, and before they entered, they heard Princess Tai’s slightly hoarse voice.
“This is good too. A stable court is good for the common people, otherwise, they would suffer.”
Qin Wan paused, instinctively feeling they were discussing court matters inside. If so, she shouldn’t go in, but seeing her hesitation, Yue Qing smiled, “It’s fine, come in. You’re not an outsider.”
Qin Wan nodded, though her steps were still hesitant. Then Huo Huai Xin’s voice rang out from inside.
“Still, I didn’t expect Prince Yong to be named Crown Prince so quickly.” He paused slightly, “Prince Jin’s case had wide-reaching implications, even involving Minister of Justice Shen Yi. Prince Yong was somewhat affected…”
Qin Wan, who had reached the doorway, suddenly stopped.
Yue Qing, who had already entered, asked, “Why would Prince Yong be affected by Shen Yi being involved in Prince Jin’s case?”
Huo Huai Xin laughed, “Second Young Master doesn’t know? Prince Yong’s previously arranged but unmarried primary consort was none other than Minister of Justice Shen Yi’s only daughter—”
