As Lu Youxin walked out of Handan Hall, the gentle smile on her face instantly faded. Her steps suddenly quickened, and the two elderly servants, Matron Deng and Matron Huang exchanged glances before hurriedly following her.
They walked along the corridor heading north and soon arrived at Wutong Court where Lu Youxin currently resided. Upon entering, all the maids in the courtyard bowed in greeting, not daring to speak a word, keeping their heads lowered respectfully. Lu Youxin led Matron Deng and Matron Huang into the main room, where she turned and took the main seat, saying crisply, “Speak.”
After the two matrons paid their respects, Matron Huang stepped forward and said, “Young Miss, over these past few days, we’ve observed that the Princess Consort largely matches the rumors about her. Moreover, His Highness dotes on her excessively, to the point of indulgence.”
Lu Youxin’s face remained expressionless as she narrowed her eyes and said, “Tell me more details.”
Matron Huang continued, “His Highness dislikes having us serve him and is very protective of the Princess Consort. Though the journey has been tiring for Princess Consort, His Highness leaves early to handle affairs while allowing her to sleep until noon – this was His Highness’s direct order not to wake her. The Xun couple prepares meals according to the Princess Consort’s preferences. According to Madam Xun, His Highness had private meetings with the Princess Consort even before their marriage. The Princess Consort’s medical skills are indeed real – she once saved the life of one of His Highness’s guards who was nearly dead. In short, His Highness values her even more than we imagined. As for the Princess Consort herself, she behaves like a typical noble lady – when His Highness is away, she looks at flowers and reads books. Now while traveling, there isn’t much else she can do. We two servants haven’t dared to overstep and displease His Highness, so we’ve only been able to observe the Princess Consort during travel. We’ve noticed she treats the servants very well, and though she’s somewhat informal, she seems to be kind-hearted.”
Lu Youxin narrowed her eyes, “Is there nothing else?”
The two matrons looked at each other, and Matron Deng stepped forward, “Though the Princess Consort has had a difficult past, as you’ve seen, her manners and appearance are both quite proper. However, these past few days, we haven’t heard her mention the Marquis’s mansion in the capital at all as if she’s deliberately avoiding the topic.”
Lu Youxin frowned, “The Loyal and Brave Marquis’s mansion no longer exists. She doesn’t mention it probably because she feels uneasy, after all, she played a part in the mansion’s current fate. If she simply follows Chi’er and completely forgets about the Marquis’s mansion, it shows she’s someone who forgets kindness and betrays gratitude.”
The two matrons nodded continuously as they listened. Matron Huang asked, “Indeed. So what does Young Miss plan to do?”
Lu Youxin lifted her chin slightly, “There’s no rush. Chi’er will stay here for many days anyway, and will even spend the New Year here. We have plenty of time.” After saying this, Lu Youxin sighed, “Chi’er is now walking a dangerous path. If the person closest to him harbors ill intentions, who knows what trouble might arise once he reaches Shuoxi.”
Lu Youxin rubbed her temples, showing obvious signs of fatigue. Matron Huang, seeing this, asked, “Young Miss, has the matter in Jianzhou been resolved?”
The question wasn’t well-received – Lu Youxin’s face immediately showed traces of anger.
“Resolved? How could it be resolved so easily! All these years, seeing that I never took a husband, I know what those old fellows are thinking. Not just them, even the younger ones – which of them has pure intentions? This time, the incident in Jianzhou nearly became unmanageable, and my elders and nephews all came to take advantage of the situation!”
The Lu family had lived in seclusion for many years, but with their numerous family members and vast business interests, they needed a foundation to maintain their position even in seclusion. For hundreds of years, the Lu family had established clan schools in Lanzhou to educate poor scholars. Though they hadn’t entered official service, their family business hadn’t suffered. They were now the wealthiest household south of the Yanjiang River. This massive enterprise had been resting on Lu Youxin’s shoulders for over ten years.
The Lu family’s business interests spanned silk, restaurants, inns, gold and silver shops, art and calligraphy, mines, and many other areas. Their current wealth was beyond ordinary people’s imagination. Lu Youxin had no brothers, and since she hadn’t taken a husband, she also had no children of her own. As a result, many clan members had their eyes on her position.
Two months ago, a mining accident occurred at the Lu family’s Fifth Branch mine in western Jianzhou.
A shaft suddenly collapsed that day, and none of the more than twenty miners underground survived. Ten days after the incident, when the victims’ families caused an uproar at the mine, the manager finally realized he couldn’t contain the situation and informed the Fifth Branch. Upon hearing that more than twenty people had died, the Fifth Branch leaders lost their bearings and finally informed Lu Youxin. With the time spent sending messages back and forth, it was already half a month before Lu Youxin learned of the matter. By then, some victims’ families had already reported the incident to the authorities, which brought investigations from both the Jianzhou Prefecture and the Salt and Iron Commission’s inspector. These investigations didn’t uncover the specific cause of the mining accident, but all blame was placed on the Lu family.
The Lu family not only had to pay substantial compensation but the mine’s managers were also imprisoned. All of the Lu family’s mining operations faced the risk of having their mining rights revoked by the Salt and Iron Commission. The Jianzhou Prefect had initially wanted to arrest members of the Fifth Branch, but thankfully Lu Youxin had foreseen the crisis and arrived in Jianzhou in time to spare her family members from imprisonment. However, unexpectedly, members of other branches caught wind of this and followed. Not only did they condemn the Fifth Branch, but they also used this incident to pressure Lu Youxin, forcing her to choose someone from the younger generation to adopt as her heir and designate as the next head of the Lu family…
Lu Youxin had been troubled by this matter for the past month. Seeing the anger in Lu Youxin’s eyes, Matron Huang felt deeply sympathetic, “Young Miss, please don’t be angry. There must be a solution. At worst, we can pay more compensation – as long as our people are safe.”
Lu Youxin gave a cold laugh at these words, “The officials at the Salt and Iron Commission have taken so many benefits from the Lu family, yet they show no consideration at all in this matter. Earlier they insisted on imprisoning Fifth Brother, and after I talked them out of it with great difficulty, they then said they would report this to the imperial court. Once reported, our family’s mining business of several generations would be finished!”
In the Great Zhou Dynasty, all mining operations were nominally controlled by the government, with some areas directly managed by the official Salt and Iron Commission. However, mining was an extremely labor-intensive endeavor, so gradually the commission began contracting out mining operations. If wealthy private families wanted to mine, they needed to negotiate with the Salt and Iron Commission for permits and submit to oversight by commission inspectors. They also had to pay substantial annual taxes. Due to the heavy taxation, ordinary families with insufficient finances or uncertainty about the richness of mineral veins didn’t dare to easily purchase mining rights. The Lu family, being wealthy and expert in this field, had obtained numerous mining rights in Lanzhou, Jianzhou, Qianzhou, and other areas from the government several decades ago. Although the annual taxes were astronomical, with their large workforce of miners, mining remained an extremely profitable venture for the Lu family.
Therefore, when the Salt and Iron Commission’s inspector threatened to report to the imperial court, it caused a stir within the Lu family.
If they truly lost these mining operations, Lu Youxin, as the family head, would bear inescapable responsibility.
Matron Huang listened with increasing alarm. She wanted to say something but held back, knowing that because her Young Miss had remained unmarried for many years, she had not only endured outside criticism but also faced pressure from her own family. The First Branch only had Young Miss, while the Second, Third, and Fourth Branches all had offspring. These people had grown bold, hoping daily that Young Miss would adopt their children so they could inherit this vast enterprise. Although it was the Fifth Branch that had caused trouble this time, they had always been close to Young Miss – it was even through Young Miss’s forceful advocacy that the mining operations had been entrusted to the Fifth Branch. Now that problems had arisen, how could those people not seize the opportunity to target Young Miss?
Matron Huang sighed deeply, “When this servant left, I hadn’t realized the situation was so serious. The Salt and Iron Commission’s inspector used to be reasonable – why are they so unforgiving this time? Young Miss, now that His Highness is here, and he’s most knowledgeable about court affairs, perhaps we should…”
“Not!” Lu Youxin firmly rejected the suggestion. “Who is he? And what time is it now? How can we let him be hindered by such matters?”
Matron Huang lowered her eyes, knowing she had spoken out of turn. “This servant spoke wrongly. Please don’t be angry, Young Miss. This servant will not let His Highness know about this matter. But… now that the heads of several branches have arrived and they’re forcing Young Miss’s hand, what can Young Miss do?”
Lu Youxin took a deep breath, closing her eyes for a moment before opening them again, a hint of ruthlessness appearing in them. “They’d better not push me too far! How many storms have I weathered over these years? Now my people are stabbing me in the back, but they forget – I have never been soft-hearted!”
Matron Huang straightened her back, “Whatever Young Miss wishes to do, just command this servant.”
Lu Youxin waved her hand, “There’s no need to do anything right now. With Chi’er here, we can delay this matter. Today I’ve sent another Five Thousand Taels of silver to Jianzhou, which should keep them quiet. Chi’er will stay here until after the New Year – only twenty days remain. After he leaves, I’ll deal with them one by one!”
After venting her anger, Lu Youxin took another deep breath to calm herself. “Enough, let’s not speak more of this matter. Go see if the kitchen has prepared dinner.”
Matron Huang immediately nodded at these words. She had previously worked here and had often accompanied Lu Youxin over the years, so she headed to the kitchen with familiar ease. After Lu Youxin sat for a moment, she suddenly looked at Matron Deng, “During your journey, did you notice if Miss Qin showed any fear or resentment?”
Matron Deng shook her head, “Never. In public, the Princess Consort is composed and calm, often smiling, and kind and tolerant to those around her. When she’s with His Highness, she’s very proper and respectful. Though His Highness dotes on her greatly, she isn’t frivolous or extravagant.”
Lu Youxin narrowed her eyes and nodded, “When I saw her today, I also didn’t find her to be reckless or seductive.”
“However…” Lu Youxin hesitated for a moment before continuing, “Even I find her somewhat difficult to read. Logically, as a Marquis’s daughter who was later granted the title of County Princess, she was at the height of honor. Marrying Chi’er appeared to be a good match on the surface, but such turmoil occurred on their wedding night, and the following month was essentially spent in flight. If I had just married and encountered such circumstances, I would likely resent my husband to death!”
Matron Deng pondered for a moment before stating confidently, “The Princess Consort indeed shows no fear. When we were in Yanzhou and His Highness went out with his guards, we two servants worried about whether something had happened, whether someone in the city might recognize His Highness. But the Princess Consort remained completely calm, able to read for an entire afternoon. The Princess Consort speaks gently and politely to everyone, but… but on the day we first met, when we two servants tried to serve His Highness and the Princess Consort at meals, His Highness dismissed us. At that time, the Princess Consort said a few words to give us a way out, and then, this servant vaguely felt that the Princess Consort’s nature wasn’t as quiet as she appeared on the surface.”
Lu Youxin gave a cold laugh, “Aren’t you stating the obvious? Have these years of teaching those incompetent clan members made you incompetent as well? If she weren’t strong-willed, how could she have followed Chi’er south so calmly? Ordinary people would be frightened to death upon learning they’ve been labeled as traitors, let alone remain so carefree along the journey. She must already know the news from the capital – her uncle’s title of Marquis has been stripped, yet she remains unhurried. If she were weak-natured, she would either resent Chi’er or wallow in self-pity, not behave as you’ve observed.”
Matron Deng seemed long accustomed to Lu Youxin’s way of speaking, and merely smiled and nodded at her words, “Yes, Young Miss is right. This servant’s consideration was inadequate.”
Lu Youxin waved her hand, “Well, she’s not a seductress, but she is clever. We just don’t know whether her intentions are good or bad.”
Hearing this, Matron Deng couldn’t provide an answer and could only remain silent.
Shortly after, Matron Huang returned, reporting that dinner was ready.
Lu Youxin immediately sent Matron Huang to invite Yan Chi and Qin Wan to dine at Wutong Court.
…
Handan Hall had two courtyards plus two small side courts. Qin Wan and Yan Chi resided in the main room of the second courtyard, while the side courts housed Fan Xin, Bai Feng, and others, allowing everyone to live together quite spaciously. Although they had left the capital in a hurry, because Yan Chi had made preparations in advance, they had brought quite a few things. Combined with items acquired along the way, it took some time just to organize all the properly carried items.
Fuling didn’t join Madam Xun and the others in organizing things but instead attended to Qin Wan and Yan Chi’s light washing before serving them tea.
It was already getting dark when they arrived at White Deer Isle, and now the sky had grown even darker. Lamps were lit in the room, and with the floor heating already fired up, it was as warm as early spring. Yan Chi drank tea while chatting with Qin Wan, “What do you think of Aunt?”
Qin Wan tilted her head and said, “What Royal Father said is true – her spirit is no less than a man’s.”
Yan Chi raised his eyebrows as he looked at Qin Wan. She put down her teacup, her gaze becoming distant for a moment as if recalling her recent meeting with Lu Youxin.
“Aunt wears elegant clothing, and her makeup is meticulously perfect. As for her appearance, there’s no need to say more – I guess she must look very similar to Mother Princess. I still remember the portrait I saw in the Prince’s mansion… Her gaze is very sharp, and with just two glances she must have seen through seven or eight-tenths of who I am. Before her, I truly felt young and weak. Not only can she handle a young girl like me, but I imagine Aunt could handle even greater situations with ease…”
“Knowing Aunt’s background and experience, and her current position in the Lu family, I can naturally sense more of her innate bearing as a leader. However, I also feel somewhat sorry for Aunt – the burden on her shoulders must not be light. Her bearing today further shows how difficult these many years of perseverance have been for her. Moreover… I guess Aunt must have recently encountered a difficult matter, not only difficult but also seemingly impossible to resolve in the short term.”
Hearing this, Yan Chi’s eyebrows raised. He narrowed his eyes and thought about his recent meeting with Lu Youxin, but in his impression, he only remembered Lu Youxin’s friendly smile. Although he could tell that her warmth toward Qin Wan wasn’t entirely sincere, he hadn’t noticed that she was facing any difficulties.
Earlier, Matron Huang had said Lu Youxin came to Jianzhou to handle clan matters, but for a family as large as the Lu family, some chaos wasn’t surprising.
Qin Wan smiled faintly and said, “Although Aunt’s makeup is exquisite, I could still see that her complexion isn’t well. She used quite a lot of pearl powder today, but still couldn’t hide the dark circles under her eyes. The bloodshot in her eyes shows she’s been sleeping very poorly lately. Moreover, her hands are cold, her lips are purplish, and her speech is short of breath and weak – these are signs of yin deficiency with excess fire and blood deficiency. Aunt has not only been sleeping very poorly lately but also has difficulty eating and is restless. We mentioned earlier that Aunt’s determination is no less than a man’s, so what matter has made Aunt so anxious and upset that she’s been in Jianzhou for many days without resolving it?”
As the best physician in Great Zhou, Qin Wan’s ability to observe, listen, smell, and take pulses naturally far exceeded Yan Chi’s. Hearing her speak this way, Yan Chi also recalled some clues. Qin Wan continued, “Aunt mentioned that some younger clan members are staying in the East Court. Although our status doesn’t require the Lu family’s younger generation to pay respects to us, when Aunt spoke of them, her tone was quite harsh. I guess the difficulty she’s facing might be related to the people staying in the East Court.”
Yan Chi narrowed his eyes, “Come here—”
Bai Feng entered from outside, and Yan Chi said, “Without alerting Aunt, go check the East Court and return quickly with information.”
Bai Feng accepted the order and left. Only then did Yan Chi smile at Qin Wan, “You’ve noticed quite a lot from just one meeting.”
Qin Wan smiled, “With Aunt, I didn’t dare to be careless, so I paid extra attention.”
Yan Chi took Qin Wan’s hand and said, “Aunt… Aunt’s nature is quite unyielding. These years have been very difficult for her – she couldn’t have endured otherwise. Although she’s not particularly close with her Royal Father, she’s been extremely good to me. You needn’t worry. After a few days of interaction, she’ll know what kind of person you are. If you don’t want to stay here, I can take you to stay in Jianzhou city…”
Qin Wan quickly shook her head, “It’s fine. I understand some of her thoughts and can empathize. I can handle it myself. She cares for you sincerely – how could we go stay elsewhere?”
Yan Chi then said, “Jianzhou Prefect Yao Zhiyuan is related by marriage to your family’s Third Branch. Though things became unpleasant later, your elder sister-in-law is now in Jianzhou city. Would you like to see her?”
Qin Wan had secretly thought about this matter and hadn’t expected Yan Chi to remember it, having assumed he would be distracted by other matters.
Qin Wan shook her head, “There’s no need to rush. We shouldn’t show ourselves now – perhaps she’s living more peacefully without seeing me.” After a pause, Qin Wan said, “I remember that last year, it was said the Jianzhou Prefect would be promoted to the capital. Why is he still in Jianzhou?”
Yan Chi explained, “He was supposed to be promoted, but Yao Zhiyuan himself submitted a memorial requesting to stay. He’s originally from Jianzhou.”
Qin Wan thought briefly, “Could it be for my elder sister-in-law? After we left, Prefect Yao went to Jinzhou to bring her back. My elder sister-in-law grew up in Jianzhou and lost her mother early – she probably wouldn’t have been comfortable going to the capital.”
Yan Chi nodded without saying more. Soon, Bai Feng returned!
Bai Feng reported, “This subordinate went to the East Court and saw it brightly lit with lanterns. It’s not as Second Madam said, with just a few younger clan members living there. From observing from the rooftop, I saw two elderly masters drinking wine, and two young men talking. In the northern courtyard of the East Court, there’s also a couple living there. This subordinate doesn’t know who they are, but they seem to be some of the Lu family’s elders, probably from the Princess Consort’s generation. These people all wear fine clothes and are attended by dozens of servants – not ordinary elders.”
Yan Chi’s brows immediately furrowed. There were Lu family elders present, so why had Aunt Lu described it so casually?
Yan Chi looked at Qin Wan, knowing that all she had said was correct!
“It seems I need to have a good talk with Aunt later.”
Since Lu Youxin hadn’t spoken clearly about it, Yan Chi didn’t want to have Bai Feng investigate too closely and privately. If there was trouble, it would be better to ask Lu Youxin directly.
After waiting a while longer, Matron Huang came to invite them to Wutong Court. Along the way, Matron Huang explained the layout of the garden to them in detail, her tone respectful and wearing a faint smile, seemingly no different from usual. However, when she wasn’t speaking, her brows were unconsciously furrowed, as if she too had some worries.
The sky had already darkened. Yan Chi held Qin Wan’s hand, and noticing Matron Huang’s unusual state, they exchanged a glance as they walked to Wutong Court. By then, Matron Huang had introduced the entire garden to them. Seeing Yan Chi and Qin Wan arrive, Lu Youxin once again warmly welcomed them!
“Chi’er, Wan’er, come in quickly…”
The feast was already set in the main hall of Wutong Court, though the large round table seemed somewhat empty with only three people seated.
Yan Chi sat down and looked around Wutong Court. Although the courtyard was spacious and elegant, the rooms seemed somewhat cold and lonely.
Lu Youxin sat in the main seat, with Yan Chi and Qin Wan seated on either side. Looking at Yan Chi, Lu Youxin said, “The last time I saw you was four years ago, on your mother’s death anniversary. I’ve wanted to see you these past few years, but you were always in Shuoxi. Last year when I heard you’d returned to the capital and traveled south, I wanted to contact you, but learned you were carrying out imperial orders, so I didn’t. When I heard about what happened to your Royal Father, I was planning to go to the capital, but was held up by clan matters at the last moment.”
Lu Youxin beckoned Matron Huang to pour wine for everyone and personally served dishes to Yan Chi and Qin Wan. “I knew about your wedding and wanted to come to the capital then too, but you know the relationship between the Lu family and the Prince of Rui’s mansion. Since you were safe, the Lu family decided not to show our faces at the Prince’s mansion.”
Hearing this, Yan Chi smiled faintly, “I naturally understand Aunt’s thoughts. I received the gifts Aunt sent.”
Lu Youxin smiled and looked around, “Though your Royal Father is gone, seeing you’ve found such a Princess Consort and that you two share such deep affection, I’m finally at ease. Now that you’re returning to Shuoxi, if you need anything, just ask me.”
Yan Chi raised his cup, “Rest assured, Aunt. I have my plans for these matters. My wife and I would like to toast to Aunt first.”
Qin Wan also raised her cup, “To Aunt.”
Lu Youxin smiled broadly and drank her wine, “I’ve waited for this day for so long, and finally it’s here. Seeing you two as such a harmonious couple, I’m sure your Royal Father and Mother Princess are happy in heaven. Now that you’re married, things are different from before. You two must be of one heart and mind.”
As the elder, Lu Youxin’s advice was naturally well-received by Yan Chi and Qin Wan. Her joy today was genuine, and her wine cup never stayed empty. Looking around the courtyard, she began speaking of past events with Yan Chi’s Mother Princess, “That year, I was only eleven when I came to White Deer Isle with my sister and mother. We arrived in autumn and stayed until winter. In autumn, there were vast stretches of fire-red maple leaves by Moon-Gazing Lake. Sister had the servants release the white deer in the garden. Strangely, those white deer particularly listened to her. Sister loved white, and with a group of white deer around her, she looked like an immortal. At that time, Mother wondered what kind of family Sister would marry into. Who knew she would later marry your Royal Father…”
Lu Youxin both complained and smiled, “The Lu family was unwilling to be entangled with the royal family. These rules had been passed down for many years – it wasn’t just talk. Later… later things became too intense. Even though Sister married out, her bond with the Lu family faded. If everything had gone smoothly afterward, it would have been fine, but… Sister passed away after just a few years of marriage. What did I say? The royal family simply couldn’t be associated with.”
Lu Youxin’s eyes now showed true resentment. Hearing this, Yan Chi gave a bitter smile, not knowing how to respond.
Lu Youxin didn’t need Yan Chi to say anything. Having not seen him for so long, and with years of resentment built up, now that both his parents had passed, these words could be spoken in this half-drunk state. “Your Mother Princess had the gentlest nature.
When she was just born, Father and Mother hired Lanzhou’s best instructress to teach her, placing great hopes on her. Mother hadn’t given us any brothers, and was counting on her. But what did she do? She ran off to the capital. Ah, all these years, whenever I think about it, I want to blame her. If both sisters had stayed in Lanzhou, I wouldn’t have had such difficulties.”
Lu Youxin drained her cup, “Her name meant ‘Guard Heart,’ and mine meant ‘Follow Heart.’ A Taoist priest calculated this, saying that for us sisters to have smooth lives, we needed to live according to our names. But ironically… we were the opposite. She, who should have guarded her heart, didn’t keep it and died early. I, who should have followed my heart, became confined. Now… ah, fate truly toys with people…”
Lu Youxin seemed to have drunk quite a bit, her words becoming increasingly disconnected. Matron Huang listened anxiously from the side, watching Yan Chi and Qin Wan’s expressions, and only breathed a sigh of relief when she saw they showed no anger. After a moment, Lu Youxin continued, “I want to blame your Royal Father, yet I can’t bring myself to. Your sister and your Royal Father truly loved each other, and your Royal Father didn’t wrong Sister, it’s just…”
Shaking her head, Lu Youxin sighed, “Fate truly toys with people!”
After a long sigh, Lu Youxin suddenly laughed, “These are all old matters now. I’ve talked too much.”
Yan Chi said, “Please continue, Aunt. Mother passed away early, and there’s much I don’t know about her.”
These words dispelled Lu Youxin’s melancholy. She laughed heartily, “Your sister was incredibly talented – one could say extraordinarily so. Back then in our Lanzhou Lu family, her reputation spread far and wide. Suitors lined up from Lanzhou to Jianzhou, but Father and Mother couldn’t bear to part with her, so they kept her. At that time, our Lu family ran many clan schools in Lanzhou, which later became the famous Yunlan Academy. Though the academy was full of male students, Sister convinced us younger ones to dress as boys and study there. The academy scholars knew our identities but didn’t stop us since we weren’t causing trouble. We ended up staying at the academy for two months…”
Lu Youxin laughed joyfully, “Sister’s literary talent was outstanding. You don’t know, but while the academy didn’t accept talents from elsewhere, no one could surpass Sister in parallel prose and poetry. At that time, we younger ones following Sister practically saw her as a deity. It was there that she met your Royal Father.”
Lu Youxin looked at Yan Chi for a moment, her eyes showing a hint of reproach, “Your Royal Father was still young then, and though he’d been to the battlefield, he hadn’t yet taken command of the Shuoxi army. He was just past twenty, having just returned from the battlefield. I heard he wanted to return to war but was denied by the late Emperor, so he had no choice but to travel. During his travels, he came to our academy. No one knew his identity then, assuming he was just a wealthy youth from the capital. At that time, there were quite a few people from the capital at our academy, most admiring the great scholars there and our Lu family’s noble reputation, so his presence wasn’t unusual. Your Royal Father was skilled in military matters but not particularly outstanding in academics. Though he was fairly handsome, compared to other students who could easily compose thousand-character parallel prose, he didn’t particularly stand out. That is until the academy held its triennial literary and martial arts examinations. While the imperial examinations were held every three years, the academy also had its trials every three years. Usually, people valued the literary examination, with the martial arts test being more casual. After the academy’s examinations, the imperial examinations would be near, so this served as practice for everyone.”
Lu Youxin narrowed her eyes, her voice becoming distant, as if seeing again the spirited young men and women of those years.
“That year’s literary examination attracted several teachers’ sons to participate. Though the academy’s examinations couldn’t help one enter official service, winning brought fame. Several great scholars had offered rare books and paintings as prizes, so everyone studied hard. During the examinations, your Royal Father wasn’t remarkable in the literary test, but in the martial arts examination, he had no equal. Not only was his martial arts superior, but he was also unmatched in military strategy and tactics, immediately astounding the martial arts instructors. While this happened in the martial arts test, an even bigger surprise occurred in the literary examination. None of the students most favored by the scholars took first place, because… Sister had also participated in the literary competition!”
Lu Youxin’s eyes brightened, “Sister had only joined for fun, but somehow, she happened to take first place. That year’s examination questions weren’t simple, but Sister’s literary talent was outstanding, and her luck was excellent. She immediately surpassed everyone else. We had been disguising ourselves as men, not drawing much attention in daily classes, and others didn’t specifically investigate us.
But when Sister suddenly emerged to take first place, she immediately attracted everyone’s attention. Some people began to notice something amiss, and as they investigated, our identities couldn’t be hidden anymore. At first, not many people realized we were women – others just thought we were young masters of the Lu family. But your Royal Father had sharp eyes and somehow saw through Sister’s female identity.
He used some means to immediately learn that Sister was the Lu family’s eldest daughter. I suppose your Royal Father had already set his sights on Sister then. Later, your Royal Father stayed at the academy for several more months. When Father learned about Sister and me going to the academy, we were naturally punished. During that time, Sister often snuck out – it was during those days that she and your Royal Father fell in love…”
Yan Chi had never known how his Royal Father and Mother Princess had fallen in love. Now, hearing Lu Youxin’s words, it was the first time he clearly understood what had happened back then. His heart stirred as he listened, never imagining that his Royal Father and Mother Princess had met in such a way.
Lu Youxin’s words painted vivid scenes – he could almost see the grand spectacle of the literary and martial arts examinations. His father and mother were both in their prime then, both exceptional, naturally attracted to each other, and falling in love. Later, despite difficulties, Mother Princess still married Royal Father. If Mother Princess had lived, this story would have become a beautiful legend!
“Sister was too clever. When someone that clever wants to achieve something, they can devise all sorts of extraordinary methods. Father, Mother, and I couldn’t stop her from marrying your Royal Father. At that time, she even forgot about the Taoist’s words. Later, when Father and Mother compromised, that’s how you came to be,” Lu Youxin said at length, then sighed and continued, “Though you may not have many memories of your Royal Mother, remember this: your Royal Mother was an exceptionally kind and beautiful person. In my eyes, there was no one better than your Royal Mother in this world. Her early passing was merely heaven’s jealousy of her beauty.”
Yan Chi nodded slowly, “Thank you, Aunt, for telling me these things. No one has ever spoken to me about this before.”
Lu Youxin laughed softly, “That Royal Father of yours has always been the most somber and rigid person. Naturally, he wouldn’t tell you these things. Back then… in my eyes, your Royal Father was nothing more than a warrior. I never understood what my sister saw in him. Others didn’t know what happened back then either, so naturally, they wouldn’t have told you.”
After such a lengthy conversation, the meal concluded pleasantly. Seeing that Lu Youxin was showing signs of intoxication, Yan Chi hurriedly asked, “Aunt, you mentioned several young people were staying in the garden. Are they members of the Lu family? Earlier, I heard Matron Huang mention that you came to Jianzhou to handle some family matters. Have those matters been resolved?”
When asked this, Lu Youxin replied without changing her expression, “Those young ones are from the Lu family’s collateral branches. As for the matters I came to handle in Jianzhou, they’ve all been properly resolved. You needn’t worry. You came to Jianzhou for the bigger picture, so just focus on what you need to do. Don’t concern yourself with the Lu family’s affairs.”
Yan Chi and Qin Wan exchanged glances, and seeing Lu Youxin smiling at them, Yan Chi could only say, “If Aunt has any difficulties, please tell me. Though my current position may be inconvenient, I can still be of help.”
Lu Youxin nodded and, noticing it was getting late, said, “Well, this was meant to be a welcoming feast, yet I’ve done most of the talking… Let me see you back to rest. It’s late, and you must be tired. Tomorrow, I’ll show you around the garden.”
Indeed, it was quite late. Yan Chi and Qin Wan rose to bid farewell to Lu Youxin, declining her offer to escort them.
After they left, the smile gradually faded from Lu Youxin’s face. She stood dazed for a moment before sitting back down, staring blankly at the table full of wine and delicacies.
When Matron Huang returned from escorting Yan Chi and Qin Wan, she immediately noticed Lu Youxin’s melancholic expression and came forward, asking, “Miss, are you drunk? Shall I help you to bed?”
Lu Youxin snapped out of her daze, shaking her head as she rose unsteadily and walked toward the warm chamber, “I still have accounts to review. No hurry.”
Matron Huang wanted to say something but held back, quickly following to attend to her while other maids and servants entered to clear the table.
In the warm chamber, Lu Youxin sat at her desk, still somewhat dazed. Matron Huang sighed, “Miss, are you thinking about the Elder Miss?”
At this question, Lu Youxin gave a bitter smile, her eyes growing moist. She blinked and sighed, “It’s all fate. Even though the Taoists predicted our destinies early on, my sister and I still lived according to our original fate. After all these years, it would be impossible to say I don’t resent her, but she left us early while I was still living well. What’s the point of resenting her?”
Lu Youxin’s gaze fell on the pile of account books before her.
The world knew of the Lu family’s nobility, but who knew that over the years, while the Lu family maintained their former dynasty’s aristocratic and Confucian facade, inside they had become no different from merchants? The former Elder Miss of the Lu family had literary talents surpassing men, but now the Second Miss of the Lu family spent her days buried in monetary accounts. These hardships were not meant to be shared with outsiders…
On the way back to Hanlan Pavilion, neither Yan Chi nor Qin Wan spoke.
Earlier, Lu Youxin had shared so much about past events, all of which Yan Chi was hearing for the first time. As he walked, he recalled everything, his longing for his deceased parents growing stronger. Qin Wan held Yan Chi’s hand tightly without saying much. When Lu Youxin was speaking, she too had thought about the past between Prince Rui Yan Li and Lu’s family’s Elder Miss Lu Shouxin, which led her to think about her mother and father.
Shen Yi came from humble origins, relying on hard study in his youth to earn his scholarly title. Later, when he entered official service, he risked his life to achieve his political accomplishments. Then he met her mother, who wasn’t from a prestigious family either. Neither of them had illustrious backgrounds, but what was precious was how they had known and supported each other for so many years. If not for last year’s troubles, their family would have been very, very happy. Even if she were offered the position of Princess, she wouldn’t care for it!
Qin Wan sighed. Status, position, power – these things seemed distant and desirable to everyone, but what good were they once obtained?
Better to cherish the people before you than pursue empty fame.
As they neared Hanlan Pavilion, the lamplight from the courtyard cast warm light onto the snow-covered grounds. Qin Wan finally leaned against Yan Chi’s arm and asked softly, “I suddenly remembered the first time I saw you.”
Yan Chi, his thoughts having drifted from the past events, turned to look at Qin Wan when he heard this.
Qin Wan smiled and said, “At that time, I was attending a celebration at the Marquis’s mansion with Grandmother. At the wedding feast, everyone was eagerly awaiting the bride. After waiting for a long time, we finally saw a group of riders approaching from the end of the street. We thought it was the bride, but as they drew closer, we saw it was just one person on horseback leading black-clad riders. Standing in the crowd, I saw you holding a spear across your saddle, your clothes flowing in the wind, and thought I’d never seen anyone so graceful and valiant. As you came closer, your commanding presence became even more intimidating. I was wondering who you were until you announced yourself, and then I realized – oh, so this is the young Demon King General from Shuoxi!”
Yan Chi couldn’t help but laugh at Qin Wan’s gentle, playful tone, “Demon King General?”
Qin Wan blinked, “Didn’t you know? In Shuoxi, you were known as the Demon King, and this title had already spread to the capital. People in the capital said you killed without batting an eye. That was one thing, but they also said you had supernatural strength and could break people’s backs with your bare hands. Some even said that when you fought in battle, you would go berserk and could eat raw human flesh. As these rumors spread, people in the capital gradually became afraid of you. I heard that when some families’ children wouldn’t stop crying at night, their parents would use your name to quiet them.”
Yan Chi laughed, “I had heard some of this, but didn’t know it had such an effect. If that’s the case, I suppose it’s not too bad.”
Qin Wan smiled, “When I first saw you, I thought to myself, this person looks heroic and masculine, not like someone who would go berserk. If he did go berserk, with so many people present, where would we all flee to? I also thought the capital portrays you as some nine-headed demon, but in person, you’re so dignified and handsome – surely the rumors must be false.”
Yan Chi’s smile grew wider. When he first met Qin Wan, she had seemed so quiet and elegant – who would have thought she had such strange thoughts!
“And then? Did you confirm anything?”
Qin Wan smiled, “Later, watching you handle cases, though your methods were efficient, you weren’t heartless. While I may not know how brave you were in the military, during that time in Jinzhou, your decisiveness earned my respect. If it weren’t for you, those two cases wouldn’t have been solved so easily.”
Yan Chi couldn’t help but pull Qin Wan closer, “Come to think of it, we’re somewhat like my Royal Father and Mother.”
Qin Wan smiled, “Yes, if you hadn’t come to Jinzhou, we would have missed each other.”
As they spoke, they reached Hanlan courtyard. Yan Chi walked ahead to open the door, waiting for Qin Wan to enter before following. Once inside, Yan Chi said, “That’s not necessarily true. I mean, even then, you stood out from the crowd like a crane among chickens. It was impossible not to notice you, which is how you caught my attention. Even if I hadn’t come to Jinzhou, you would have returned to the capital eventually. Whenever we were meant to meet, we wouldn’t have missed each other.”
These words warmed Qin Wan’s heart, and sweet happiness spread through her. As they sat on the low couch by the window, Qin Wan asked, “Aunt didn’t mention what difficulties she’s encountered. Should we help?”
Yan Chi narrowed his eyes at this, “Let’s observe for now. Aunt is strong-willed and doesn’t want to burden me. If I interfere too much privately, it might not be appropriate.”
Qin Wan nodded in agreement. Seeing it was late, they prepared for bed.
They slept well through the night. When they woke early the next morning, they saw it was snowing again. The snowflakes were falling steadily, and the garden outside was covered in silver. Since the scenery here was more lush than in the capital, Qin Wan thought about going for a walk. After breakfast, Lu Youxin came to Hanlan Pavilion personally, holding an umbrella.
“Yesterday I said I’d show you around the garden. Get ready and let’s go out – I’ll take you to see the deer.”
Though Qin Wan was quite worldly, she had never seen white deer before, so she became excited, “Aunt, please wait a moment—”
Qin Wan had Furong and others help her put on a cloak, her eyes bright with anticipation, showing a girlish charm. Lu Youxin maintained a neutral expression but secretly observed Qin Wan, somewhat pleased to see her show such liveliness.
Yan Chi watched Qin Wan with amusement. Once they were ready, Lu Youxin took Qin Wan’s hand and headed out.
Furong followed them with an umbrella as Lu Youxin explained while walking, “The Moon-Gazing Lake is to the south, but today the lakeside is too windy for a pleasant visit. The deer garden is to the north – let’s go there first. In weather like this, the best thing would be to warm some wine and have some roasted venison to go with it…”
They were going to see deer, but before they even saw any, Lu Youxin was already talking about roasting them and drinking wine. Qin Wan’s expression became somewhat stiff. Lu Youxin noticed but continued speaking casually as they walked along the corridor toward the north, passing many pavilions and towers. Due to the snow, the winter scenery in the garden was particularly enchanting, and with the well-maintained lush vegetation, it was quite different from the capital’s scenery. Soon, they reached a stone stairway that wound up a hillside. Lu Youxin pointed to the stairs and said, “It’s up there.”
Though White Deer Prefecture was expansive, every detail showed careful design. When Qin Wan climbed the steps and looked back, she saw overlapping eaves and brackets, with the mansion and towers extending to the lake. She could see the endless expanse of Moon-Gazing Lake, making her appreciate the exquisite positioning of this place even more.
They quickly reached the deer garden, which wasn’t just a deer pen but a vast hillside forest. Most of the trees were white birch, their yellow leaves now falling. Wooden walkways wound through the forest. Lu Youxin led Qin Wan onto the walkway, with two deer garden attendants following. Soon, Qin Wan heard a slight rustling in the forest and turning her head, she saw a snow-white deer appear in the depths of the woods.
Qin Wan saw the white deer, and the white deer saw Qin Wan, but it was afraid of people. Upon seeing them, it immediately stopped in its tracks, alert.
Qin Wan quickly stopped too, “She seems afraid—”
Lu Youxin smiled, “This garden doesn’t have regular residents, so there are few visitors. They become scared when they see people, but don’t worry, they won’t hurt anyone.”
Even from this distance, Qin Wan could see the deer’s clear eyes, like shallow streams. She stared steadily at the deer, and the deer stared back at her. As their eyes met, the deer suddenly seemed to show intelligence and slowly walked toward them. Qin Wan was surprised for a moment but didn’t dare move. The deer approached hesitantly, stopping and starting until it came to the walkway. Qin Wan let go of Lu Youxin’s hand and couldn’t help but step down from the walkway, “It seems not afraid anymore.”
This was a young deer that hadn’t yet reached maturity, small in size and without antlers. When Qin Wan approached, it instinctively stepped back half a step. Qin Wan quickly stopped, and only when she saw the white deer hadn’t run away did she continue forward. Soon, Qin Wan was beside the white deer, and she couldn’t resist reaching out to pat its head.
The young deer’s snow-white fur was smooth as a mirror. As Qin Wan stroked it, it affectionately nuzzled into her palm, making her feel incredibly honored!
Yan Chi stood watching with folded arms, smiling. His eyes weren’t on the deer but focused on Qin Wan’s attentive and delighted expression. Beside them, Lu Youxin said, “It seems she likes you. How obedient – this one is usually the most timid.”
Hearing this, Qin Wan was even more delighted. She couldn’t help but crouch down to stroke the deer’s back. The deer kicked its hooves playfully but didn’t run away, appearing quite content and relaxed.
Qin Wan spoke softly, “It seems we have some predestined connection.”
Lu Youxin smiled, her eyes glinting mischievously, “This deer is too thin. It hasn’t grown strong despite being fed for so long. However, such deer are the most delicious when roasted…”
Qin Wan’s smile instantly vanished upon hearing this. She quickly stood up and said, “We appreciate Aunt’s kindness, but these white deer are domesticated. Using them for wine accompaniment seems too heartless. Perhaps we could forget about it? I’ve heard that Jianzhou’s specialty is the white fish from Moon-Gazing Lake. Why don’t we trouble Aunt to let us taste some lake fish instead?”
Qin Wan was somewhat anxious, her eyes slightly widened as she looked hopefully at Lu Youxin. Seeing Qin Wan like this, Lu Youxin suddenly burst out laughing, “Alright, alright. We certainly do serve roasted venison, but the meat we use comes from outside vendors. The white deer in our deer garden are priceless treasures – we absolutely cannot kill them for meat!”
With these words, her earlier teasing intention became clear. Qin Wan breathed a sigh of relief but felt somewhat embarrassed, “So Aunt was just joking with me!”
Lu Youxin smiled, “I heard that many nobles in the capital enjoy venison in winter and especially raise deer for this purpose. I thought you would agree with me, but I didn’t expect you to be so tender-hearted. These white deer are precious, but that’s just how the owner views them.”
Qin Wan smiled, “Aunt makes a good point. If they weren’t raised by themselves, there would be no emotional attachment – they would just be ordinary animals. But it’s different with the ones you’ve raised yourself. After investing time and effort, naturally, it’s hard to part with them.”
Lu Youxin nodded, “Wan’er understands well.”
Qin Wan smiled and turned back to play with the young deer. A nearby deer keeper came forward with some vegetables and fruits for feeding the deer. Qin Wan eagerly took them to feed the young deer, which ate without hesitation. Soon, several deer calls suddenly echoed through the forest, startling Qin Wan as the young deer beside her turned to leave!
The keeper explained, “Its parents are calling for it.”
Qin Wan felt somewhat disappointed, thinking the white deer was leaving, but unexpectedly, the young deer stretched its neck and called back several times. Soon, two adult white deer emerged from the forest – one male and one female, both pure white. Compared to the young deer, they were more robust and majestic, especially the male. Not only was its fur snow-white, but its antlers were also the color of snow, standing about a foot tall with winding branches like snow-white coral trees. Watching it approach slowly, Qin Wan felt as if she were seeing a divine deer descending from heaven.
“The ancients said that when sincerity moves creatures, auspicious blessings will arrive – they spoke of white deer as auspicious omens…”
Qin Wan spoke softly. Soon the two deer came close, and when Qin Wan offered them food, the adult deer ate it. The nearby keeper remarked, “How strange – these adult deer usually only let us few caretakers feed them. I didn’t expect them not to reject this young lady.”
Lu Youxin glanced at the keeper but didn’t reveal Qin Wan’s identity. Seeing Qin Wan happily feeding the deer, Lu Youxin said, “Chi’er, let Wan’er feed them. Come over here to talk.”
There was a pavilion nearby where they could also shelter from the snow.
Yan Chi followed Lu Youxin into the pavilion. Lu Youxin said, “Last night we only talked about old matters. I haven’t asked about your plans this time.”
Yan Chi knew what Lu Youxin wanted to ask and said, “To be honest with Aunt, though I’ve come to Jianzhou, Qianzhou is also a place I’m interested in. Royal Father’s death is inseparable from the Qianzhou garrison. In a couple of days, I’ll need to make a trip to Qianzhou.”
Lu Youxin frowned suspiciously, wanting to ask something but ultimately didn’t. “Never mind, I won’t ask too much about royal court schemes. I only ask you, what do you need Aunt to help with?”
Yan Chi smiled, “For now, there’s nothing that needs Aunt’s help. Please don’t worry.”
Lu Youxin sighed, “The court is in chaos, and the common people’s lives aren’t easy either. Chi’er, if you return to Shuoxi, do you plan to temporarily establish a base there, or will you march north?”
This question was too pointed. Yan Chi pondered for a moment before saying, “That depends on how the situation in the realm develops.”
Lu Youxin thought for a moment but didn’t say more, “Good, you must have your plans. That’s fine then.”
As she spoke, Lu Youxin looked toward Qin Wan in the distance. Qin Wan was still feeding the deer, with two maids joining her. The group of young women stood together, clearly delighted. “Was she truly your own choice?”
Yan Chi raised his eyebrows at this and smiled, “Aunt worries too much.”
Lu Youxin turned to look at Yan Chi and saw him gazing deeply at Qin Wan as he said, “I met her in Jinzhou last year. Before the Empress Dowager arranged the marriage, I had already declared my intentions to her. When the Royal Father met with trouble and the Prince’s mansion was in danger, it was she who requested the marriage from the Empress Dowager. Later, when the Emperor grew suspicious and I planned to leave the capital for Shuoxi, I told her all this in advance. Even so, she was willing to come with me. It’s not at all what Aunt imagined.”
Lu Youxin’s eyes widened in surprise – she truly hadn’t known about these matters. If Yan Chi and Qin Wan had such an involved history, then she had indeed overthought things.
Lu Youxin found it somewhat amusing, “She’s just a young lady, now bearing the label of treason with you. It’s not easy. You’re quite heartless.”
Hearing this, Yan Chi shook his head, “Aunt doesn’t know, but her life hasn’t been smooth these past ten-plus years. Staying in the capital would do her no good either. I know she’s suffering many hardships now, but rest assured, Aunt – I will never let her face any grievance under my protection.”
Though Yan Chi didn’t speak loudly, each word rang like iron. Lu Youxin looked at him, her eyes narrowing, as if seeing Yan Lin through him. She sighed, “Well, you father and son are both passionate in love. I suppose you won’t disappoint those you truly cherish.” Then, speaking as an elder, she continued, “From what I’ve seen so far, I find nothing to dislike about her, though she’s not particularly outstanding. Her appearance is indeed good, but you’re not one to care about looks alone. What you plan to do in the future is beyond ordinary people’s capabilities. If she’s to accompany you, she’ll need a resilient spirit and some capability. Being just a noble lady isn’t enough.”
Yan Chi smiled broadly, his gaze growing increasingly tender, “Aunt is usually excellent at reading people. Could it be you can’t see through her?”
Lu Youxin pressed her lips together somewhat unhappily, but Yan Chi said, “It’s fine if Aunt can’t see through her. It’s enough that I know what kind of person she is. Just trust me.”
Lu Youxin wanted to say more but ultimately held back, “If that’s the case, then I’ll have to watch carefully!”
Yan Chi smiled without comment and, seeing that Qin Wan had been feeding the deer for a while, walked out of the pavilion.
“If you like it, you can come feed them another day. It’s snowing now, we should head back.”
Qin Wan reluctantly patted the young deer’s head one last time before returning to the walkway. Lu Youxin smiled as she left the pavilion, and the group headed back.
As they descended the steps, Lu Youxin explained the origins of the deer garden. Soon they were back in the corridor when Qin Wan suddenly caught sight of a figure flashing past the ceremonial gate ahead. She immediately stopped, and Lu Youxin stopped with her, looking ahead to see a robe flutter past. Her smile instantly vanished as she called out, “Who’s there in front?!”
Lu Youxin shouted, but the person seemed to walk even faster. Lu Youxin quickly glanced at Matron Huang.
Matron Huang immediately led people running toward the ceremonial gate, pursuing shortly after. Lu Youxin stood in place, both embarrassed and angry, not knowing how to explain.
Taking guests to tour the garden only to have someone spy on them – it was a loss of face for her as the head of the household!
“Haha, it must be some playful youth from the East Garden. You two head back first, it’s nothing.”
After speaking, Lu Youxin still smiled at them. Yan Chi frowned but ultimately followed Lu Youxin’s suggestion and led Qin Wan back to Hanlan Pavilion.
As soon as they left, Lu Youxin’s gaze turned cold, and she hurried to Wutong Garden. Just as she entered, Matron Huang returned!
“Miss, we couldn’t catch the person, but they went toward the East Garden! It must be some young master from one of the branches!”
Lu Youxin slammed the table forcefully, “How dare they! I already ordered the East Garden’s ceremonial gate to be guarded! Which dog hole did they crawl through?!”
Matron Huang said helplessly, “This servant just went to look – there was no one guarding the gate to the East Garden earlier.”
Lu Youxin narrowed her eyes, a cold light flashing in them, “No one guarding? They take someone else’s money and forget who’s in charge of this household?” She gave a cold laugh, then suddenly softened her voice, “Go see who was supposed to be on duty just now. Handle them according to family law as appropriate.”
Matron Huang understood Lu Youxin’s meaning and quickly nodded before leaving with the others.
When Qin Wan and Yan Chi had just returned to Hanlan Pavilion, Bai Feng hurried in from outside, saying, “Master, Princess, Matron Huang, and others beat two servants, and they’ve now been thrown out of White Deer Prefecture.”
Qin Wan looked at Yan Chi – in this weather, could they survive being thrown out?
“What crime did they commit?”
Yan Chi said, “No need to ask – it must be related to that person from earlier.”
The confusion in Qin Wan’s eyes deepened, “It seems the people living in this garden aren’t as simple as they appear, but Aunt is unwilling to explain.”
Yan Chi reassured her, “Aunt knows her limits. She won’t cause any deaths. Don’t worry.”
Qin Wan wasn’t one to meddle, she was just curious since they were staying there. Soon after, Fan Xin suddenly entered from outside, saying, “Your Highness, news from Qianzhou.”
Upon hearing it was from Qianzhou, Yan Chi’s expression immediately turned serious. Qin Wan knew they needed to discuss important matters, so she rose and went to the warm chamber.
Meanwhile, Yan Chi opened the letter and read it at a glance, saying, “Yu Qi has arrived, and Taoist Zhang has also arrived. Jiang Heying is currently in the Qianzhou military camp.”
Since taking Zhang Dongxuan under his command, Yan Chi had valued him highly and had sent him to Qianzhou before leaving the capital.
When Fan Xin heard this, his expression brightened, “When do we depart?”
Yan Chi pondered briefly, “The earliest would be the day after tomorrow. Immediately send word to Yu Qi to proceed according to the previously arranged plan. Tell him we’ll depart early the day after tomorrow.”
Bai Feng nodded and wrote the letter. Yan Chi spoke with Fan Xin for a few more moments before heading to the warm chamber. There, Qin Wan was talking with Furong. Seeing him approach, Qin Wan asked, “What happened? Are you going to Qianzhou?”
Yan Chi had Furong withdraw and sat down beside Qin Wan, “You’ve guessed it again.”
Qin Wan sighed, “Qianzhou borders Liangzhou, and the Royal Father’s death is deeply connected to the Qianzhou Commander. Whether for Shuoxi’s situation or to avenge your father, you wouldn’t ignore Qianzhou. I had already guessed this.”
Yan Chi’s lips twitched, “There will certainly be fighting in Qianzhou. Are you willing to stay here?”
Though Qin Wan didn’t know Yan Chi’s detailed arrangements, she understood that his trip to Qianzhou was to take the life of Qianzhou Commander Jiang Heying. Never mind the fighting – even without it, a defenseless woman like her would only be a burden if she went along.
Qin Wan nodded, “Of course, I’ll stay and wait for you to return for the New Year. If I went along, I couldn’t help and would only distract you.”
Qin Wan had not only guessed his thoughts but also knew what arrangement would benefit them both.
Yan Chi couldn’t help but pull Qin Wan into his embrace, “Leaving you here alone makes me uneasy.”
Qin Wan laughed softly, “Do you plan to keep me by your side at all times in the future? When we reach Shuoxi, you may need to command troops in battle. How appropriate would it be to have a woman with you then? Aunt is here, so I’ll be fine. What is there to worry about?”
Yan Chi tightened his arms around Qin Wan, recalling Lu Youxin’s earlier words.
His aunt still didn’t understand his wife well enough. If she did, she would know that even without their mutual affection, Qin Wan was the best possible wife for him. Regardless of her outwardly calm and gentle demeanor, her inner strength always made him both cherish and respect her.
Having made this decision, during the evening meal Yan Chi announced his intention to go to Qianzhou. Lu Youxin, already aware of Yan Chi’s plans from earlier in the day, wasn’t surprised. Learning that Qin Wan would stay at White Deer Prefecture, she immediately guaranteed Qin Wan’s safety, telling him to go without worry.
From Jianzhou to Qianzhou was only a two-day journey at full gallop, but with the heavy snow, it was uncertain if all roads would be passable. Moreover, once in Qianzhou, the success of their mission was unpredictable, leaving Qin Wan quite anxious.
After a night passed, the next day Yan Chi spent only a brief moment discussing matters with Fan Xin and others, spending the rest of his time inseparable from Qin Wan. In the morning, they went to the back garden to appreciate plum blossoms, and in the afternoon visited the lakeside. Due to the cold, they returned early to Hanlan Pavilion. At dinner time, knowing Yan Chi would leave early the next day, Lu Youxin didn’t keep them long. Back at Hanlan Pavilion, Qin Wan had already prepared his travel necessities.
There wasn’t much to pack, but this was the first time anyone had prepared things for Yan Chi. Watching Qin Wan carefully place cloaks and cotton garments into the bundle, Yan Chi couldn’t resist embracing her from behind. Qin Wan was tying the bundle’s straps and smiled, “What is it?”
Yan Chi rested his chin in the crook of her neck, nuzzling her gently, “You’ve been by my side these days. Suddenly parting feels strange to me.”
Qin Wan laughed – she was the woman, yet hadn’t expressed such reluctance, while he spoke of it first.
Qin Wan finished tying the bundle and turned around, but Yan Chi remained standing face-to-face with her. “Before marrying you, I had thought about all this. Since I chose to marry you, I naturally accepted these things. Now with the weather so severe, even if I wanted to stay close to you, I’d worry about falling ill and becoming a burden.”
Yan Chi gazed deeply into Qin Wan’s eyes. Though she had been calm before, seeing his expression made her heartache.
She couldn’t help but throw herself into his embrace, hugging him, “Actually, I don’t want to part either.”
These words were like opening a floodgate. When the gate was closed, Qin Wan could always appear composed and proper, but now that it was open, the sourness in her heart couldn’t be contained. Her voice grew hoarse. Though they hadn’t seen each other daily before, sometimes going several days without meeting or talking, during this month traveling south, she had grown dependent on him, grown accustomed to him. The habit was truly a frightening thing – even someone of her strong will have nearly succumbed to it.
Though Yan Chi had been frank with Lu Youxin, he felt guilty toward Qin Wan in his heart. Now at parting, his emotions were even harder to suppress. “I’ll be gone at most half a month. Consider this time as a short stay here. You’ve been quite tired from traveling, so take this chance to rest and recuperate. When we reach Shuoxi later, conditions will be much harsher than now.”
Qin Wan gave a muffled “mm” in response, making Yan Chi’s heart ache even more. He simply picked her up and laid her on the bed, lying down beside her.
Qin Wan curled up in Yan Chi’s embrace like a little rabbit, her mood melancholic.
Yan Chi stroked her ear, speaking softly, “You said you thought about many things before marrying me. Tell me what you thought about?”
Qin Wan pressed her lips together, being completely honest at this moment, “We both carry the burden of avenging our parents. Before, we walked on thin ice in the capital, and now the Emperor has labeled us as traitors, forcing us down that path. You were meant to accomplish great things, and now this path is even more difficult. Since I love you and become your wife, I naturally prioritize your achievements. When you go to battle, I’ll wait for you at home. If you’re wounded, I’ll dress your wounds and apply medicine. Even if you make other decisions, as long as they’re reasonable, I can understand and accommodate you. In short, I’m not a weak person – you can pursue your goals without hesitation.”
Qin Wan spoke with great spirit, but Yan Chi felt little joy hearing it. He frowned, “You only spoke of what you’ll do for me. What do you think I should do for you?”
Qin Wan blinked, “You treat me so well now, what more could I want?”
Throughout their journey south, though Qin Wan was tired from traveling, Yan Chi had indeed treated her like a precious treasure, afraid she might break.
Even thinking back to how her parents interacted, her father hadn’t been as attentive and careful as Yan Chi.
Along the way, even Furong had endless praise and admiration for Yan Chi, and Qin Wan felt very content.
“Is that enough?” Yan Chi raised an eyebrow.
Qin Wan laughed, “What more could there be? Ordinary couples live like this. I’m not naive – if I want to walk with you for the long term, I can’t expect you to indulge and pamper me in everything, especially since your achievements affect me so much. For instance, now I can’t ask you to stay with me instead of going to Qianzhou.”
Yan Chi looked at Qin Wan somewhat puzzled, feeling something wasn’t quite right but unable to say what.
Seeing his expression, Qin Wan thought for a moment and suddenly said, “Well, I do have one request—”
Yan Chi perked up, “Tell me!”
Qin Wan pondered briefly and said, “You must prioritize your safety. Though I’m skilled in medicine, I don’t want to see you injured.”
Yan Chi’s eyes darkened – this answer wasn’t what he’d hoped for, but as Qin Wan spoke, something seemed to flow gently through his heart. He pulled her even tighter into his embrace, “Wan’er, having you as my wife is heaven’s mercy upon me.”
Qin Wan held his shoulders, her lips curving slightly upward.
Love truly had an indescribable power. Previously, she hadn’t been good with sweet words, never made promises, and even when giving, never yielded unconditionally. But now with Yan Chi, she genuinely thought only of how to help him, and when asked to make demands, she truly couldn’t think of any – ultimately, she wasn’t a greedy person.
“So you can go without worry.”
Qin Wan spoke slowly. Hearing this, Yan Chi couldn’t help but kiss her ear, and once started, couldn’t stop. His passion aroused, and he immediately covered Qin Wan beneath him. With their temporary parting tomorrow, Yan Chi couldn’t contain himself, merely waving his hand to lower the bed curtains, shutting everything out beyond them.
Yan Chi was passionate, and Qin Wan was reluctant to part. They entangled intimately until Qin Wan was completely exhausted before Yan Chi finally spared her.
Qin Wan was too tired to move even a finger, her cheeks remaining flushed long after. She lay boneless in Yan Chi’s embrace. Though not fully satisfied, Yan Chi had to restrain himself. Half-asleep, covered in sweet perspiration, Qin Wan was too lazy to get up and wash. Her hand fell on Yan Chi’s lean waist, tracing it idly. Seeing her delicate face flushed pink, Yan Chi couldn’t help but kiss her lightly several times, “Wait here.”
Saying this, Yan Chi released Qin Wan and got up, going to the bathroom. White Deer Prefecture was more convenient than their previous lodgings. Yan Chi brought back a hot towel to wipe Qin Wan’s body.
This wasn’t the first time, but Qin Wan still felt extremely embarrassed whenever she was bare before Yan Chi. When she was embarrassed, her body would flush pink, and combined with the marks Yan Chi had just left, it was even more stirring. The heat that had just subsided in Yan Chi rose again. He carefully wiped her twice before covering her with the brocade quilt, then went to the bathroom to relieve himself. When he returned, Qin Wan was already asleep.
Yan Chi smiled slightly at Qin Wan’s sleeping face. As soon as he lay down, she unconsciously moved toward his embrace. Seeing this, Yan Chi’s heart filled with tenderness, and he watched her foolishly for a long while before slowly falling asleep.
The next morning when Qin Wan woke up, the space beside her was empty. She reached out to touch where Yan Chi had slept – it was already cold, showing he had left long ago.
Qin Wan felt very melancholic, even her nose tingling with emotion, something she had never experienced before.
In her childhood, she would cry whenever her father left on official business, but after studying medicine at Medicine King Valley and experiencing more of life, her character had grown stronger. Partings had never brought tears to her eyes, but this time was so different.
In this vast world, though it had been just one month, Yan Chi seemed to have already merged with her blood and bones, impossible to separate.
In this world, only Yan Chi was so close to her.
While together, she hadn’t noticed, but upon parting, it became especially obvious.
Qin Wan pulled up the brocade quilt, covering her face and head. The quilt still carried Yan Chi’s scent. Smelling this familiar scent, Qin Wan’s heart grew even more sour and unbearable. She stayed covered like this for a long while before finally pulling down the quilt and taking several deep breaths. When her breathing steadied, her emotions also settled, and only then did she call Furong in.
“Princess, Bai Feng was left behind by His Highness,” Furong said while helping Qin Wan dress. Qin Wan froze, all other emotions instantly vanishing as she frowned, “Wasn’t it agreed that Bai Feng would go with him?!”
They had discussed this yesterday afternoon. Yan Chi had said he would leave Bai Feng behind, but Qin Wan had firmly refused. Seeing Qin Wan’s serious expression, Yan Chi hadn’t argued further, and Qin Wan thought it was settled. She hadn’t expected him to do this!
“Where is Bai Feng? Tell him to quickly go after His Highness!”
Furong shrank her neck and said, “It’s too late, Princess. His Highness left over two hours ago.”
Qin Wan frowned and looked at the sky outside – indeed, it was already bright.
After breakfast, Qin Wan summoned Bai Feng and frowned, “He previously entrusted you with many tasks. Without you accompanying him this time, he’ll surely be inconvenienced. What good does it do for him to leave you here? I’m perfectly fine – why would I need you to stay?”
Qin Wan had never frowned while speaking to them before. Seeing this, Bai Feng hurriedly said, “Master was uneasy and left this servant behind so he could focus on his tasks with peace of mind.”
Qin Wan frowned, looking at Bai Feng’s submissive appearance, and had to suppress her anger.
If she had complaints, she could only express them when that person returned – there was no point in making things difficult for Bai Feng.
Qin Wan sighed, “Fine, we’ll discuss this when he returns.”
Bai Feng quickly said, “Thank you, Princess. This servant will wait outside – just call if you need anything.”
Qin Wan nodded, and Bai Feng withdrew.
This change left Qin Wan quite unsettled. Bai Feng was Yan Chi’s most trusted person, and his not taking Bai Feng made her worry. However, what was done was done, and there was no way to change it now. How could there be such a person who acts first and reports later?!
Qin Wan secretly punched a cushion, feeling truly angry…
Furong and Bai Ying exchanged glances, and Furong stepped forward, “Princess, please don’t be angry. You worry about His Highness, and His Highness worries about you. Though this garden is nice, it’s still not our place. His Highness left Bai Feng for our benefit.”
Qin Wan snorted internally, her anger half dissipating.
Yan Chi had left too early, not letting anyone see him off. At noon, Lu Youxin came to see Qin Wan. Though Yan Chi was gone, Lu Youxin treated Qin Wan the same as before. It was clear that after these few days together, Lu Youxin had grown considerably closer to Qin Wan compared to the beginning. However, with Yan Chi gone and Lu Youxin having her busy matters, she soon left.
With nothing to do, Qin Wan could only read in her room, but she couldn’t focus on reading. With Yan Chi gone, the room seemed to be missing something.
Qin Wan spent half the day restlessly pacing in her room, and so the day passed.
That night, Qin Wan slept poorly. Without Yan Chi, even with several bed warmers, she felt cold in her hands and feet. At midnight, she dreamed of her father and mother. After this dream, Qin Wan couldn’t sleep soundly for the rest of the night and woke up very early the next day.
She lay in bed for a while, not wanting to get up. Her mind was filled with either thoughts of Yan Chi or the bloody dream from midnight. She tossed and turned for a long time, lying there until she had quite a headache. Soon Qin Wan realized this couldn’t continue. She had made those bold statements herself, yet now with Yan Chi gone, she seemed to have lost her soul. How could this be acceptable?!
Qin Wan suddenly sat up, called Furong to help her wash up, and after breakfast, went out.
She first went to Wutong Garden to pay respects to Lu Youxin, but seeing Lu Youxin listening to her steward’s report, she said she would go feed the deer. Lu Youxin had Matron Huang accompany her, and Qin Wan led the group to the deer garden.
Having been to the deer garden before, Qin Wan was familiar with it. Matron Huang accompanied her, trying to make conversation when possible.
“With the New Year approaching, because Second Miss is in Jianzhou, many stewards have come to report here. Otherwise, Second Miss would surely accompany you personally.”
Qin Wan smiled, “I know Aunt is busy. I’m just a junior – how could I expect an elder to accompany me? It’s a pity I can’t help; otherwise, I’d be willing to share Aunt’s burdens.”
Seeing how well Qin Wan spoke, Matron Huang felt quite pleased and told her many things about the deer garden. Qin Wan responded appropriately, and after feeding the deer, her mood improved considerably. When she returned to Hanlan Pavilion, she didn’t feel the room was so empty anymore.
However, perhaps because it was only the second day since Yan Chi’s departure, after staying in the room for a short while, Qin Wan felt her mood decline again.
At this hour, Yan Chi was still on the road, but Qin Wan kept worrying about whether he might be injured in battle.
After some thought, Qin Wan decided to go look at Moon-Gazing Lake.
Lu Youxin had left servants at Hanlan Pavilion. Qin Wan had Furong inform a servant, and when she came out wearing her cloak, the servant led her toward Moon-Gazing Lake.
Furong followed behind Qin Wan and softly said, “When His Highness was here, Princess didn’t go out so often. How is it that once His Highness left, Princess is willing to walk around more?”
Qin Wan looked at Furong’s confused expression and shook her head, “Since there’s nothing else to do, I might as well walk around.”
Furong made an “oh” sound and didn’t ask further, but Qin Wan sighed.
If Yan Chi were here, they could do anything together – even silently reading books or playing chess would be nice, but now it was different.
She hadn’t known love before, but now she understood that the stories in those picture books were all true – the heartache of longing, how one night feels like years. She hadn’t noticed before but now tasted some of these feelings. However, given her personality, she absolutely wouldn’t allow herself to become melancholic. With such beautiful scenery before her, she needed to do something to calm herself down. Thinking this way, Qin Wan felt somewhat helpless.
She had only married Yan Chi, and though they knew, protected, and loved each other, she absolutely couldn’t make him her everything. One must first be independent and love oneself before loving others. Yao Xinlan’s earlier obsessive love had ultimately led to tragedy. Having understood this principle early, she absolutely wouldn’t allow herself to follow that path.
Though the snow hadn’t melted, today was good weather. The winter sky was cloudless for thousands of miles, with only cold wind howling. Previously, when it was snowing, Qin Wan hadn’t gone to the lakeside, but today she wanted to take a look. From far away, she could see thick ice forming on the lake’s edge, making her even more interested.
Bai Feng and four other guards left by Yan Chi accompanied them, so Furong and Bai Ying felt quite safe accompanying Qin Wan to the lakeside.
At the lakeside, the peach blossom grove mentioned by Xun Niang and the maple leaf forest mentioned by Lu Youxin were naturally invisible, with only some ordinary green trees surrounding the shore. However, with layers of accumulated snow and vast misty waves, the winter lake scenery was still pleasing to the eye. Moreover, this lakeside had been enclosed by White Deer Prefecture, almost like their own private garden, allowing for freer play. Qin Wan experimentally walked toward the ice at the lake’s edge—
“Princess! Be careful! The ice isn’t solid!”
Furong was terrified, but Qin Wan smiled, “I’ve played like this before, I know what I’m doing—”
As soon as she said this, Qin Wan regretted it. Sure enough, Furong asked puzzled, “Oh? Where has Princess played like this before?”
Qin Wan had indeed played like this before, but not in Jinzhou or the capital, but rather in Yunzhou in the northeastern part of Da Zhou.
Yunzhou’s winters were even colder than Jianzhou’s. If Moon-Gazing Lake were in Yunzhou, the entire lake surface would probably freeze. When Shen Yi was stationed in Yunzhou, there happened to be a lake near their residence. In winter, the lake surface would freeze a foot thick, and not just children but even adults would play on the ice. However, she couldn’t tell Furong these things.
“When I was very, very young, in the capital. Don’t you remember?”
The capital was also cold, so Furong didn’t doubt it, just scratched her head, “This servant’s memory isn’t as good as Princess’s – I’ve completely forgotten! Please be careful, Princess!”
Qin Wan didn’t dare be careless, only walking along the very edge. She had recalled her childhood experiences and felt somewhat playful, but as she walked, she suddenly felt something was wrong. Though her servants and guards were nearby, she suddenly felt as if someone was watching her.
Qin Wan frowned and quickly turned to look toward the ceremonial gate they had come through.
White Deer Prefecture was separated from the lakeside by a ceremonial gate. Usually, this dock was isolated by the gate, only opening for lake tours or boat use. At this moment, at the gate, there somehow stood a young man in blue robes with a somewhat unsavory appearance!
The young man appeared to be in his early twenties, somewhat fat with a large head and ears. His eyes were fixed intently on Qin Wan, showing signs of lustful interest. When he saw Qin Wan look at him, he quickly shrank back behind the gate but didn’t immediately flee. Qin Wan frowned, “Bring that person here!”
Bai Feng had also noticed the man, and though his face remained expressionless, his eyes showed anger at someone daring to spy on Qin Wan. Bai Feng led several guards forward, and without explanation, twisted the man’s arm and dragged him toward the lake…
“Ah ah, what are you doing? Who are you people?!”
“I… I am the master of this garden! Whose servants are you?! How dare you treat me like this?!”
The man screamed like a pig while looking at Qin Wan. Seeing this, Bai Feng kicked him in the back, sending him sprawling face-first into the ground. He scrambled to get up, but before he could, Bai Feng stepped on his shoulder.
“Who are you?! Why were you spying?!”
The lakeside was covered in snow, and the man’s struggles left him covered in dirty snow. Seeing Bai Feng show no mercy, the man’s face reddened as he said, “I am the Lu family’s Fourth Young Master, Lu Jingcheng. Who are you people?! You come as guests to my home, yet dare to treat a master of the Lu family like this?! Let me up right now!”
Bai Feng frowned. When the man had first claimed to be a master of the Lu family, Bai Feng hadn’t believed it or rather hadn’t cared. But now that he had given his full name, even if Bai Feng didn’t want to believe it, he had to show some respect for Lu Youxin’s sake. He looked up at Qin Wan.
Qin Wan nodded, and only then did Bai Feng release his foot.
“Cough cough cough, you people! Whose family are you from?! I’ve already said I’m a master of the Lu family! You still don’t believe me? What spying?! This is my family’s garden – I can go wherever I want! Why should I explain myself to you?!”
Lu Jingcheng’s arm had been dislocated by Bai Feng, and now he had no strength to get up. After struggling for a while, he collapsed sitting on the ground. He had no dignity to begin with, and now with his clothes disheveled and dirty, and his hair in disarray, he was even more unsightly.
Bai Ying and Furong stepped forward, together shielding Qin Wan. Though Lu Jingcheng was sweating from pain, he still couldn’t help trying to look at Qin Wan. Furong glared fiercely at Lu Jingcheng!
“Us? Who we are is not for you to question! Since you’re a young master of the Lu family, you should know guest etiquette. Our Prin… our Lady was enjoying herself here, yet you were spying from afar. I should report this to Second Madam and let her judge!”
Furong was usually lively and good-natured but most protective. Now her chest puffed up like a mother hen, wishing she could slap Lu Jingcheng twice across the face!
Seeing even a maid being so fierce, how could Lu Jingcheng submit?
“Oh, so you’re going to report to my aunt? Then go ahead! Let’s see who my aunt protects?!”
Seeing Lu Jingcheng’s complete shamelessness, Furong was about to scold him further when Qin Wan spoke, “Enough. Bai Feng, please escort Young Master Lu to Wutong Garden properly. No need for further words – I’m sure Second Madam will call a doctor for him.”
Lu Jingcheng had been brazenly shameless just now, but hearing this, his expression suddenly changed. However, Bai Feng wouldn’t let him speak further, grabbing him by the scruff of his neck and dragging him away like cargo. With his left arm dislocated and only his right hand free, Lu Jingcheng couldn’t break free and was dragged away howling.
Only after they left did Qin Wan step out from behind Furong.
Looking at the tracks dragged through the snow, Qin Wan instinctively felt uneasy.
This person’s arrogant and shameless behavior surely proved he was indeed a young master of the Lu family, and Lu Youxin had mentioned young people staying in the garden. Bai Feng had even investigated the East Garden. Qin Wan wasn’t afraid of much, but she feared this person might recognize her identity and spread it everywhere.
Qin Wan became more composed the more urgent things became. Realizing this possibility, her melancholy completely vanished. She immediately said, “Let’s return to Hanlan Pavilion first. When Bai Feng returns, Aunt will likely come looking for me.”
With these words, Qin Wan led everyone back to Hanlan Pavilion, with Furong muttering curses about that person the whole way.
They had barely sat down when Bai Feng arrived with Lu Youxin.
Qin Wan rose to greet her, but Lu Youxin came in and immediately grabbed Qin Wan’s wrist, “Dear child, were you frightened? That scoundrel is indeed a member of the Lu family. I don’t know how he learned you were here and followed you. Don’t worry, I’ll have him sent away right now!”
Qin Wan pulled Lu Youxin to sit down, “Aunt, don’t be upset. I’m fine, I just worry he might discover our identity.”
Hearing this, Lu Youxin hurriedly said, “That’s impossible. No one knows of your arrival. He just thinks you’re guests. In Jianzhou, the Lu family has many old friends, so occasionally we do have visitors.”
Qin Wan breathed a sigh of relief, “If that’s the case, then all is well. Since he’s a member of the Lu family, there’s no need to send him away. I’ll just avoid going out to the garden these days.”
Lu Youxin patted the back of Qin Wan’s hand, “That’s unnecessary. Carry on as usual. This is a good opportunity for me to discipline them.”
Qin Wan, not knowing the Lu family’s internal affairs, was about to speak further, but Lu Youxin stood up, “I came to check on you, and since you weren’t frightened, that’s good. I’ll go handle this matter now. You rest well, and I’ll come see you again this evening.”
Lu Youxin left without allowing any argument, so Qin Wan could only rise to see her off.
At the courtyard gate, seeing Lu Youxin leave with her people, Qin Wan instructed Bai Feng, “Go see what’s happening.”
Bai Feng acknowledged and followed.
Qin Wan turned back, heavy with worry. Furong said, “Princess, don’t worry. I can see Madam Lu has a formidable character – she’ll surely punish that person properly.”
Qin Wan shook her head, “I certainly don’t doubt Aunt’s intentions, but just now when Lu Jingcheng spoke of Aunt, his tone was quite contemptuous. I suspect Lu Jingcheng and Aunt are likely opponents. For a junior to be so disrespectful, he must have someone backing him. Though I don’t know the Lu family’s internal conflicts, regardless of the situation, if Aunt punishes him because of me, she’ll likely face considerable opposition. I worry that if things escalate, it will only make things more difficult for Aunt.”
Though Furong didn’t quite understand, Qin Wan said no more, just returning to the warm chamber to await news from Bai Feng.
It took a full hour before Bai Feng returned.
“Princess, when this servant followed, Madam Lu went straight to the East Garden. Lu Jingcheng was crying and making a scene, saying he had merely disturbed a beautiful guest, yet was treated so harshly by our people. Lu Jingcheng’s parents were both present. His father is Lu Boyong, the head of the Lu family’s second branch. Both the Second Master and Second Madam are difficult to deal with. When they heard Madam wanted to send Lu Jingcheng to Jianzhou City, they immediately started causing trouble.”
“This servant heard their meaning – those people were accusing Madam, saying she allowed the fifth branch to lose such a large enterprise and cause deaths, yet didn’t investigate. Now for Lu Jingcheng’s small mistake, she wants to punish him so severely. The Second Master even said he would immediately summon the other masters to discuss either dividing the family or having Madam choose the next family head. He also threatened to write to the family elders for judgment!”
“The Second Madam was wailing even more dramatically, alternating between demanding to know who injured her son and threatening to bash her head in to show everyone the family head’s authority. In short, this servant listened for quite a while, and it was all their unreasonable ranting. Madam originally wanted to have Lu Jingcheng forcibly removed, but soon two middle-aged men arrived from the neighboring courtyard, seemingly the Lu family’s Third and Fourth Masters. Seeing the situation, they both sided with the Second Master, greatly angering Madam.”
“When this servant left, Madam had sealed the door from the East Garden to this side and posted guards, saying they could stay but weren’t allowed to wander around. Only then did things quiet down somewhat. Madam will likely come to discuss this with Princess this evening.”
After Bai Feng finished, Qin Wan looked as if she had expected this. Furong said, “Madam is the family head? How dare the others be so shameless?”
Qin Wan shook her head, “Aunt has encountered difficulties and been caught in a vulnerable position, naturally making her subject to others’ control.”
When Yan Chi was here, Qin Wan had already made some guesses, but despite several inquiries, Lu Youxin wouldn’t speak of it. Later, when Yan Chi left for Qianzhou, Qin Wan hadn’t noticed any more unusual signs, until today. If not for Bai Feng overhearing these things, she might still not know what was troubling Lu Youxin.
“Bai Feng, go investigate what matter the Second Master spoke of, and who exactly is staying in the East Garden. Make detailed inquiries about everything.”
After some thought, Qin Wan gave this order. She hadn’t planned to go this far, but now with Lu Youxin in a precarious position, she needed to control the situation to avoid exposing her identity. It was better to know both sides. Bai Feng accepted the order and left, while Qin Wan pondered carefully.
In the evening, Lu Youxin did come apologetically, saying she couldn’t send the person away but had him under watch. She spoke lightly of it, not mentioning what had happened in the afternoon. Qin Wan went along with her words, turning to other topics, and Lu Youxin didn’t explain further. They had dinner together before Lu Youxin left.
As soon as Lu Youxin left, Bai Feng returned with the information he had gathered.
Bai Feng first explained about the mining disaster, then continued, “The Lu family has five branches, traditionally respecting the first branch’s authority, with the family head always being the first branch’s direct descendant. However, because the previous Old Master and Old Madam had no sons, Madam eventually became the family head. The other branches were all dissatisfied with this, except the fifth branch, which remained close to the main branch. Therefore, Madam has always favored the fifth branch in her actions. The mining business in Jianzhou was a very profitable enterprise, which Madam entrusted to the fifth branch’s management five years ago. There hadn’t been any problems these years, but two months ago something went wrong. After the incident, the Jianzhou Prefect and Salt and Iron Commission investigated without results but wanted to make arrests. Madam spent considerable money to resolve the arrest matter, but the mining business likely cannot be saved. The other branches came upon hearing this news, first pursuing the fifth branch’s responsibility, then questioning Madam’s accountability. Since Madam is unmarried and childless, they want to force her to adopt one of their sons and choose him as the family head. Lately, they’ve been causing trouble over this matter…”
Finally, everything became clear to Qin Wan – why other Lu family members were staying in the garden where they were received, and why Lu Youxin looked troubled. It all made sense now.
Qin Wan narrowed her eyes. She wouldn’t comment on the mining disaster, but using it to pressure Lu Youxin was quite unjust.
However, though she now understood the situation, helping Lu Youxin was difficult. Lu Youxin was very proud – even Yan Chi’s repeated questions couldn’t get her to speak, let alone allow Qin Wan to interfere. Moreover, intervening without status could expose her identity, letting everyone know the Prince Rui couple was in Jianzhou! That would implicate both the Lu family and White Deer Prefecture.
“Keep watching the situation there. If there’s an opportunity tomorrow, I’ll ask Aunt directly.”
After long consideration, this was all Qin Wan could instruct, and Bai Feng naturally agreed.
That night, Qin Wan slept somewhat more peacefully, though she again dreamed of Yan Chi.
Compared to last night’s bloody dream, tonight’s dream was much more intimate. In the dream, Yan Chi was gentle as water, holding her close, and whispering sweet words in her ear. Qin Wan wanted to respond but couldn’t speak no matter what. Seeing no response from her, Yan Chi looked somewhat disappointed and released her, turning to leave. Qin Wan suddenly became anxious, and in this anxiety, she woke up. Opening her eyes, Qin Wan was dazed for a moment before realizing she had been dreaming, and couldn’t help but smile bitterly at the dream scene.
Qin Wan didn’t hurry to get up, staring at the canopy, waiting for the melancholy in her heart to dissipate before planning to call someone. However, before she could speak, suddenly footsteps sounded outside!
Qin Wan frowned, but not hearing anyone enter, she called out to Furong.
Furong quickly entered the inner chamber with a troubled face, “Princess, you’re awake?!”
“Yes, I’m awake. What’s happening outside? What’s wrong?”
Furong said helplessly, “Bai Feng just came to say something happened in the East Garden. We don’t know exactly what, but all the manor’s servants and attendants have gone to the East Garden. It seems Second Madam wants to seize people from the other branches—”
Qin Wan frowned, quickly dressing and rising, “Impossible. If Aunt could endure yesterday, there’s even less reason to seize people today. Something must have happened to force her to act this way.”
“Don’t worry, Princess. Bai Feng has gone to investigate again – we should have news soon!”
Qin Wan nodded and went to wash up. When she started breakfast, Bai Feng still hadn’t returned, making her increasingly anxious.
After waiting another quarter hour, Bai Feng finally returned!
Entering from outside, Bai Feng brought with him a chill and an especially grave expression. Upon entering, he said, “Princess, someone has died in the East Garden!”
Everyone in the room jumped in shock. Qin Wan fixed her gaze on him, “Who died?”
For such a commotion, the deceased couldn’t be an ordinary servant or attendant.
Sure enough, Bai Feng said, “The person who died was yesterday’s Lu Jingcheng!”
