Chapter 1129: You Are What You Eat

Only when the two of them remained outside did Dan Yujun speak:

“Little You and I will stay with you at the hospital tonight. Kang Wei briefly told me about Comrade Jiang Yan, but I still don’t quite understand her.”

Dan Yujun was a clear-headed person who never made hasty judgments.

She hadn’t rushed to accept when Kang Wei confessed – before agreeing, they had exchanged letters for a long time. Kang Wei wasn’t a particularly complex person, at least in matters of romance he was as pure as white paper. Dan Yujun could judge and understand him through the lines of their correspondence… When Kang Wei finally spoke up, her acceptance came naturally.

But this was her first time meeting Jiang Yan.

What others said and what she observed herself had some overlap but also some discrepancies. Dan Yujun felt Jiang Yan needed further observation.

Of course, she had no conflict with Jiang Yan – Dan Yujun was simply warning Xia Xiaolan to be careful.

She didn’t know Jiang Yan, so naturally, she would protect Xia Xiaolan!

Why had Kang Wei fallen for Senior Dan at first sight and pursued her relentlessly after their second meeting?

Senior Dan wasn’t extraordinarily beautiful – Kang Wei might have seen her through rose-tinted glasses. Xia Xiaolan thought she was average-looking at first sight, but she excelled in bearing. This “bearing” wasn’t mystical – it was simply about deportment and conduct. Setting aside deportment, conversations with Dan Yujun required no effort to think of topics. She spoke gently yet hit the core points, never wasting words!

Dan Yujun was well-read, truly understanding what she read. Simple matters shouldn’t be complicated – she and Xia Xiaolan were schoolmates, and she was Kang Wei’s girlfriend, so naturally she would stand with Xia Xiaolan.

Jiang Yan was excellent.

Whether Jiang Yan had a strong character or deep schemes didn’t affect Dan Yujun’s stance.

She was considering things for Xia Xiaolan’s sake – if Xia Xiaolan didn’t accept this goodwill, it would be too heartless.

“I might understand some of it, or maybe I’m seeing an illusion, but this doesn’t affect my attitude toward Jiang Yan. One thing is one thing – her saving me is true, and her eyeing my boyfriend is also true. I’m clear about this.”

Dan Yujun didn’t say much more.

To Xia Xiaolan’s surprise, she expressed regret about the discarded pheasant and rabbits: “We hunted those ourselves, such a waste.”

Well, when they weren’t familiar, she thought Senior Dan was above worldly matters. Now that they were getting acquainted, she discovered they could not only discuss world literature but also talk about food and drink, which brought them closer.

Xia Xiaolan found this kind of interaction quite relaxing.

She was an ordinary person anyway. If Dan Yujun and Kang Wei stayed together, they would have many interactions, and it was good not to maintain an aloof attitude. “That’s nothing to worry about. If the resort owner is smart, he won’t dare touch the pheasant and rabbits we hunted today, and he’ll have to clean up those wild boars and send them over too.”

The resort owner probably wanted to know more than Xia Xiaolan’s group about how several large wild boars appeared on the mountain!

As Xia Xiaolan said, Jiang Yan couldn’t blame Little You.

With Little You and Dan Yujun for company, the night watch at the hospital wasn’t boring.

Though Jiang Yan’s leg was in a cast, she was extremely tough and indeed physically outstanding. Supporting herself on the bed rails, she could hop to the ground and stand steadily on one foot, not needing Xia Xiaolan’s help at all.

Xia Xiaolan stayed the whole night out of goodwill, but Jiang Yan seemed unappreciative.

The next morning, Zhou Cheng came to the hospital again, with Kang Wei and Shao Guangrong bringing breakfast.

By noon, the resort owner arrived.

The owner had people carry down the wild boars from the mountain, spending the night cleaning, shaving, and gutting them, loading everything into a van and bringing it over.

Once cleaned, there were over a thousand jin of wild boar meat. Usually, if not sold at the resort, it could be given as gifts, but now he wouldn’t dare touch it even if beaten to death, not daring to short even an ounce.

“Young Master Zhou, how should we handle this meat? I’ve had it roughly cleaned. In this weather, it won’t spoil immediately, but it can’t be stored long.”

Zhou Cheng didn’t even glance at the meat. “Don’t call me Young Master Zhou. Have you figured out where the wild boars came from?”

The owner broke into a sweat. “Last month, a herd of boars came down and damaged the autumn crops in the neighboring county. Every township organized militias and villagers to drive away the boars, killing many. Some even sold the meat to our resort. Somehow a group escaped, crossing two mountain ridges to settle behind the reservoir. That mountain is leased by the resort for guest hunting, ordinary people don’t dare trespass, and we were lax in checking. This group of boars made their home on the back mountain.”

The owner felt quite unlucky – the last organized mountain sweep was just half a month ago.

This group of boars must have arrived after the sweep.

In the past half month, even if resort guests went hunting, they didn’t venture as deep as Zhou Cheng’s group, which is why they had this face-to-face encounter with the boars.

The owner was nearly in tears now.

The resort’s guests included some newly wealthy businessmen showing off to their clients.

Some officials enjoyed fishing, eating meals for free anyway.

The most troublesome were people like Zhou Cheng – vaguely known to be formidable but with unclear backgrounds. He couldn’t even figure out which way their hair grew to stroke it right. He could only maintain a humble attitude, hoping Zhou Cheng would be lenient – the problems were all the resort’s fault, such large wild boars shouldn’t have been on the back mountain at all.

The owner’s explanation was reasonable. Zhou Cheng’s investigation with Kang Wei and Shao Guangrong yielded the same conclusion.

The nearby townships organizing militias to drive away wild boars was true, and this time they had relied on their numbers and declined the resort’s guide.

The resort was at fault, but there were also various coincidences involved.

Zhou Cheng pointed upstairs, “The injured person is still in the ward. Go get your answer yourself.”

The owner left the van where it was, and with two attendants carrying various tonics, ran to the ward with profuse thanks.

Without getting past Zhou Cheng, he couldn’t even see the injured Jiang Yan.

Kang Wei walked around the van. “Brother Cheng, do you believe him that it was an accident?”

“Whether it was an accident or not, this is all he could find out. I suspect Jiang Wu’s mischief, but you went to investigate yourself and found no traces.”

Jiang Yan had insisted on hunting wild boar, and Zhou Cheng could guess seven or eight-tenths of her intentions – she just wanted to be contrarian, to see if Xiaolan would chicken out.

Was it a coincidence, or was the trap so clever it left no traces?

If it was a trap, was the goal just to break Jiang Yan’s leg?

Someone as violent as Jiang Wu, who had made threats before – if it was him, Xiaolan wouldn’t have escaped unharmed.

Shao Guangrong felt somewhat ashamed. “It’s all my fault for bringing such a timid girl. If she hadn’t screamed in panic, none of this would have happened. Now Miss Jiang has a broken leg, and Sister-in-law Xiaolan owes her a favor.”

The van’s door was open, and Kang Wei poked at the protruding pig’s trotter:

“Wild boars are omnivores. They eat fruit and tender grass in the mountains, not missing any good medicinal herbs – must be very nutritious… You are what you eat. Let’s take this meat back to Beijing, but leave the trotters for Jiang Yan to help her recover.”
