How could this be?
Wu Ziyu showed sufficient compliance and charm towards Du Chenrong, but notably without any genuine affection. This made Du Chenrong reluctant to send her away. Even when his previous companions were merely acting, none had been so obvious in displaying complete obedience and devotion in his presence.
Men can be shallow – they don’t cherish what comes too easily. Du Chenrong was satisfied with Wu Ziyu’s demeanor. She never concealed her lack of genuine romantic interest in him, which only made him more unwilling to let her go.
“Sister-in-law Sun, you’re worrying unnecessarily!” Wu Ziyu remained unconcerned, continuing to arrange her life as usual.
Was Du Chenrong angry? When she dined with potential suitors, though Du Chenrong knew about it, he never questioned her. Instead, he would send her gifts every few days, always ensuring they were more expensive and superior to what her suitors gave. Still, the presence of gifts from other men in her residence irritated him.
Wu Ziyu gradually figured out the pattern. Since this persona worked well with Du Chenrong, why would she change her attitude based on a servant’s advice? If the servant were truly clever, she wouldn’t be serving others – clearly, the experience of those who failed shouldn’t be heeded!
Wu Ziyu maintained her ways, and so far, her approach seemed correct. Du Chenrong no longer mentioned giving her official status, yet he visited her residence more frequently. Unless he was traveling abroad, Du Chenrong stayed at least two nights each week – a remarkably high frequency for a man his age. Once, before a trip to Japan, he even wanted to bring Wu Ziyu along.
Of course, Wu Ziyu declined, citing conflicts with her dance lessons.
Her compliance was merely a facade. Her true nature was one without attachment.
Du Chenrong remained neutral – he had never failed to conquer any woman, so she could at least serve as temporary entertainment.
That evening, Wu Ziyu left the nightclub slightly intoxicated. Sister-in-law Sun noticed her dress was slit up to her thigh, finding it inappropriate.
“Miss Vivi, your coat…” Sister-in-law Sun tried to drape the coat over Wu Ziyu, but some drunk men pushing and shoving separated them. Though Du Chenrong had assigned a driver and bodyguards who quickly dispersed the crowd, Wu Ziyu had vanished!
“If anything happens to Miss Vivi, Master Du won’t forgive you!” Sister-in-law Sun, who relied on Wu Ziyu for her wages, worried most, while the bodyguards and driver also grew anxious.
Wu Ziyu was pulled behind a nightclub pillar by someone wearing a hat, who held her neck. “Don’t scream. Young Master Du asked me to deliver a message. I’ll leave after I say it.”
It was Du Zhaohui’s man. Wu Ziyu felt relieved. She had known this day would come – Du Zhaohui finally couldn’t hold back.
The man behind her spoke in a low voice: “Wu Ziyu, Young Master Du brought you out of the mainland to help you escape prison, gave you a new identity, letting you live this luxurious life. Yet you haven’t been useful enough. The eldest young master says if you can’t handle this task well, he’ll find someone else.”
“Impossible. Chairman Du values me now – who could the eldest young master find to replace me so quickly?” Wu Ziyu felt nervous and accidentally spoke the truth.
The man holding her neck laughed coldly: “No wonder you’ve been negligent – you think you have backing and can disregard Young Master Du. Wu Ziyu, others might not know your background, but doesn’t Young Master Du? We could bring you to Hong Kong, and we can send you back to the mainland – you’re a fugitive! If you don’t appreciate what you have now, don’t blame Young Master Du for taking it away… Listen carefully, Young Master Du sent me to warn you about your safety. You’ve angered several of the Du family’s mistresses, especially the Fourth Mistress. Her older brother Liu Tianquan is quite powerful. If he decides to eliminate you, that’s your misfortune.”
Wu Ziyu gritted her teeth, remembering the Fourth Mistress who had thrown soup in her face.
All the glory and wealth meant nothing without being alive to enjoy it.
“Thank Young Master Du for the warning. I understand!”
“Remember this well – you have no foundation in Hong Kong, while the Fourth Mistress has been favored for years. Your presence beside Master Du has stolen her favor. Even if she doesn’t want you dead, she’ll ruin you. You should know what to do now, right?”
As the driver and bodyguards searched and approached, the man behind her vanished silently.
Wu Ziyu leaned against the pillar, catching her breath: “I’m here!”
“Miss Vivi, are you alright?”
Wu Ziyu pulled open her collar, “Do I look alright? Call Master Du, I need to see him!”
A clear mark showed on her white neck. Being the boss’s woman, the bodyguards dared not look too closely.
Soon, Du Chenrong drove to the residence.
Seeing several packed suitcases in the living room, he was puzzled: “I heard you were harassed by drunk men. What’s the meaning of this? Going to nightclubs was your choice.”
Wu Ziyu smiled coldly, “What drunk men? Someone nearly strangled me to death, saying if I continue stealing someone else’s husband, they’ll scar my face and sell me to Southeast Asia as a courtesan! Chairman Du, thank you for your favor these days, but it seems our fate ends here.”
Du Chenrong didn’t doubt Wu Ziyu’s words.
The mark on her neck was still visible, and the bodyguards had reported the incident. Sister-in-law Sun was also frightened, saying Miss Vivi had disappeared suddenly.
These marks couldn’t have been self-inflicted.
Wu Ziyu had never shown jealousy before. Even when the second and fourth mistresses came to scold her and threw soup in her face, she never mentioned it.
This time, the threat to her life must have truly frightened her, causing such an outburst.
Du Chenrong stopped her hand as she reached for the suitcase:
“Ridiculous. As my woman, if you can be threatened in Hong Kong, then I, Du Chenrong, can’t maintain my position here either. Don’t be angry. I will handle this matter for you.”
Who could have done this?
The Second Mistress was past the age of such jealousy, focused solely on her children now.
The Third Mistress had never been competitive, not even in her youth, so why would she be jealous now?
Only Liu Keping, who had been favored for several years, couldn’t tolerate others and had an explosive temper – this seemed like something she would do.
Du Chenrong was used to women being jealous, but Vivi was his woman. Although she sometimes accepted dinner invitations from admirers, she knew her boundaries and would never truly betray him.
For Du Chenrong, only he could decide when to tire of a woman and ignore her.
No one else could make decisions for him, especially not about selling his woman to Southeast Asia!
This crossed the line of normal jealousy.
Even his first wife hadn’t done such things, let alone other mistresses.
“Have Sister-in-law Sun pack everything. Don’t talk about ending our fate. I’ll have my people prepare, and on an auspicious day, we’ll hold a banquet and announce in the newspaper that I’m taking you as my Fifth Mistress!”
