“Did you understand?”
Xia Dajun clenched his fists without answering, grinding his back teeth.
This woman was detestable. Why should he listen to her?
Xia Dajun had never bowed his head to any woman except for his mother. The idea of a woman ruling over a man was unheard of in his rural hometown!
Guan Hue’e sneered, “If you think my words don’t matter, you’re welcome to try. I encourage you to!”
“Hue’e?”
Xie Yun came from Kang Wei’s bedside. “So you’re here. Wei’s Second Uncle wants to invite a specialist from Beijing to examine him. Who do you think we should call?”
In this era, the best doctors were certainly in Beijing.
Xie Yun had overheard others’ discussions about whether the man Guan Hue’e was talking to was Xia Xiaolan’s father. She didn’t ask, understood basic courtesy, and gave a face to Guan Hue’e by pretending not to notice Xia Dajun’s presence.
“How about inviting Professor Qiao Yongkui?”
Guan Hue’e immediately thought of an expert’s name.
“Professor Qiao isn’t easy to invite. He mainly treats leaders…”
Having finished crying earlier, Xie Yun knew she had to face Kang Wei’s injuries proactively. She had inquired about this matter and knew Qiao Yongkui was an expert.
“I’ll try and make a call to Beijing first.”
Guan Hue’e focused on her conversation with Xie Yun, no longer paying attention to Xia Dajun.
Xia Dajun listened in confusion, wondering why this woman had suddenly left mid-conversation after being so fierce moments ago.
He wheeled around the hospital aimlessly, stopping doctors in white coats to ask: “Comrade, is there a Doctor Qiao who specializes in brain treatment? I heard he’s very skilled, from Beijing, and some kind of professor?”
The male doctor thought for a moment, “You must mean Professor Qiao Yongkui? He’s a neurologist!” The doctor gave a thumbs-up while speaking.
Xia Dajun got excited, “Yes, yes, that’s Doctor Qiao Yongkui! Is it possible to invite him to Shenzhen for treatment? Can we call him?”
The doctor looked at him as if he were foolish:
“Comrade, Professor Qiao exclusively treats leaders. I don’t have his contact information and couldn’t possibly invite him to Shenzhen.”
“Then what kind of person—”
Xia Dajun stopped mid-sentence on his own.
Professor Qiao treated leaders, so naturally, only leaders could summon him, leaders like Mayor Tang.
Xiaolan knew Mayor Tang – just what kind of man had his daughter found as a partner?
Xia Dajun clenched his back teeth tightly but didn’t dare wheel over to find Guan Hue’e. He remembered his divorce from Liu Fen, and Chen Wangda, the Village Chief of Qijing Village, who was a war veteran. Xia Dajun knew better than anyone how powerful the Village Chief was. But who ranked higher than a Village Chief – was it the Township Head? County Head? Or City Mayor?!
Xia Dajun couldn’t figure out the administrative hierarchy. He just knew that even Du Zhaohui, with all his wealth, had to obey Mayor Tang in Shenzhen.
The glimpse of Guan Hue’e’s background made her earlier “threat” particularly terrifying. Guan Hue’e was right – sometimes Xia Dajun wasn’t stupid at all. He was cowardly by nature, so cowardly he didn’t even dare question Old Lady Xia’s favoritism, let alone confront powerful figures.
He found Du Zhaohui with his head hung low, barely able to look up.
“Young Master, I couldn’t accomplish what you asked…”
Indeed, he felt like a complete waste.
Du Zhaohui had long known Xia Dajun’s head was filled with nothing but mush except for his brute strength.
But wasn’t this too stupid? He didn’t even understand his daughter.
“I heard someone went to find you earlier?”
Xia Dajun wished he could sink into the ground, but the hospital floor was covered in polished tiles, leaving him nowhere to hide. He repeated what Guan Hue’e had said, secretly hoping Du Zhaohui would be his backing.
Du Zhaohui’s expression turned strange. “Speaking of your family members, someone just reported to me that a person claiming to be your niece showed up at our group’s Shenzhen office.”
Du Zhaohui was quite surprised to learn that Xia Xiaolan’s future mother-in-law was also at the hospital.
She had even threatened Xia Dajun to back off for Xia Xiaolan’s sake – was this the source of Xia Xiaolan’s confidence in refusing to cooperate? Not only had she won over her boyfriend, but even her future mother-in-law liked her this much, not feeling ashamed of her background and willing to solve problems for her?!
As Du Zhaohui thought about this, his speculation about Xia Xiaolan’s boyfriend’s identity gradually solidified – he must be more influential than the Kang family, or at least of similar standing!
With Xia Xiaolan’s in-laws being so powerful, a peasant like Xia Dajun certainly couldn’t fight them, and Du Zhaohui wouldn’t risk making new enemies for Xia Dajun’s sake.
As for Xia Dajun’s rural relatives, Young Master Du wasn’t the type to meet with the Xia family.
Even if Xia Dajun’s niece was as beautiful as Xia Xiaolan, Du Zhaohui had no interest. His attention remained focused on the current trouble.
Seeing that Du Zhaohui showed no sign of supporting him, Xia Dajun dared not mention it again.
His attention was immediately diverted by Du Zhaohui’s words, “My niece?”
Could Ziyu have come to Shenzhen?
But how did Ziyu know he was in Shenzhen?
Xia Dajun was full of questions.
“Young Master, can I see her?”
Du Zhaohui waved his hand dismissively, finding Xia Dajun’s presence irritating now – better not to hover around him.
…
The Cheng Rong Group had a branch in Shenzhen.
This was originally Liu Tianquan’s “Tianchen” office building. When Du Zhaohui came to Shenzhen, he took over Liu Tianquan’s territory, renovated it, and turned it into Cheng Rong Group’s Shenzhen office.
Wang Jingui and the others had arrived before Xia Ziyu, but these people who had never traveled far were stopped in Guangzhou, unable to obtain border defense permits.
Xia Ziyu, being a university student, was more knowledgeable and resourceful. She managed to pay someone to help her secretly enter Shenzhen.
Once in Shenzhen, things became easier. She just needed to ask about the Cheng Rong Group – if one person didn’t know, she could ask others until she found someone who had heard of this Hong Kong company. Where there’s a will, there’s a way, and Xia Ziyu eventually found her way to the Cheng Rong Group office.
She said she was Xia Dajun’s niece, and that Xia Dajun worked for Mr. Du, explaining she was here to find her uncle.
No one would turn her away. Xia Ziyu appeared well-spoken and educated, so the company staff let her wait.
Business people care about appearances. Liu Tianquan had originally decorated the office building lavishly, and Du Zhaohui had renovated it further. Sitting in the chair, drinking the beverage offered by the receptionist, Xia Ziyu surveyed her surroundings with complicated emotions.
On one hand, she couldn’t believe Xia Dajun could become successful.
On the other hand, she had confirmed that Xia Dajun truly worked for a Hong Kong boss – why else would the receptionist serve her drinks if there wasn’t someone named “Xia Dajun” working for the boss?
It seemed her trip to Shenzhen hadn’t been wasted. Now she would see what kind of surprise her Second Uncle had in store for her!
Xia Ziyu was full of calculations, but when she saw Xia Dajun appear in a wheelchair, they all turned to undisguised shock:
“Second Uncle, what happened to you?”
