Chapter 692: Mother and Son Reunion

“Let Xia Dajun handle these matters directly from now on.”

If not for Xia Dajun saving him twice, Du Zhaohui would have fired him along with all these troublesome matters that irritated him.

Young Master Du was dealing with investments worth hundreds of millions – how could he spend his days handling peasants’ trivial affairs?

The attendant was crafty, reporting unnecessary matters to Du Zhaohui, showing his agenda. Recently, the young master had favored Xia Dajun too much, and Xia Dajun wasn’t socializing with the group. Du Zhaohui’s inner circle strongly disapproved of him.

If Xia Dajun had been permanently disabled, it wouldn’t have mattered, but Hong Kong doctors said he could recover to normal with rehabilitation – wouldn’t he then return to the young master’s side?

“Young Master, I understand.”

The attendant looked fearful but secretly laughed. It wasn’t entirely his fault – Xia Dajun’s family was truly holding him back.

Coming to find Xia Dajun in Shenzhen, getting as far as Yangcheng only to get lost – they had some talent! With a family of such intelligence, Xia Dajun’s favor with the young master must be pure luck.

When the company informed Xia Dajun, he nearly fell from his wheelchair in anxiety:

“Ziyu, how did your grandmother end up at the police station, and your uncle’s family is missing…”

Xia Ziyu hadn’t expected this either.

When she received the telegram, she’d only thought about coming to Shenzhen, not considering that these country bumpkins who’d never traveled far would encounter human traffickers. Xia Ziyu wasn’t particularly panicked; rather, she felt a secret happiness: there was only one Second Uncle, and his resources were limited. She hadn’t yet caught Du Zhaohui’s attention and still needed Second Uncle’s support – having no one compete for attention was best!

Xia Hongbing’s family of three would undoubtedly come to steal attention.

With only Old Lady Xia remaining, she wasn’t worried. After all, Old Lady Xia had always favored Xia Ziyu… Even though their grandmother-granddaughter relationship had grown distant this past year, Xia Ziyu wasn’t concerned. She’d been away at school during the family division and could easily excuse herself with a few words.

People, like animals, could be trained. If Xia Ziyu could “train” Xia Dajun to sacrifice for her, how could she not do the same with Old Lady Xia, the former matriarch of the Xia family?

If Xia Dajun showed favoritism toward her, Old Lady Xia’s obsession with Xia Ziyu settling in the city and eventually bringing her there to enjoy a good life had become a fixation!

After all, Xia Ziyu was someone who could bring honor and glory to the Xia family.

Of course, there had been a hiccup with Xia Xiaolan’s success – but Xia Ziyu wasn’t worried about Old Lady Xia now favoring Xia Xiaolan. With Xia Xiaolan’s petty personality, and not even acknowledging her father, how could she care about a grandmother from an older generation?

Xia Ziyu quickly analyzed the pros and cons, deciding Old Lady Xia’s appearance wouldn’t affect the bigger picture. Her expression showed great concern:

“Second Uncle, we need to bring Grandmother here first. Once we see her, we’ll know what happened.”

“Yes, you’re right, let’s bring your grandmother over.”

He had lost his composure; fortunately, Ziyu remained rational.

Once Cheng Rong Group confirmed Old Lady Xia’s identity, the Yangcheng police issued her a “border pass.” Old Lady Xia even rode in a police car, driven by officers to Shenzhen.

After a year apart, mother and son reunited – one with a crooked face, the other in a wheelchair. Old Lady Xia practically threw herself at him:

“Dajun, you heartless child, how could you leave without any word!”

Old Lady Xia struck Xia Dajun several times, focused only on venting her emotions, not even asking why he was in a wheelchair. While Xia Dajun was caught up in his mother’s dramatic display of longing, Xia Ziyu learned the details from the police officer.

Hearing that Xia Hongbing’s family of three was trafficked just for free meals, Xia Ziyu felt her cheeks burning with embarrassment. Sharing the Xia surname, was too shameful!

The police officer who brought Old Lady Xia explained the case and mentioned they would try to find the three missing people.

For some reason, Xia Ziyu felt the officer’s gaze held subtle sympathy.

“Officer, thank you so much. You’ve worked so diligently, bringing my grandmother to Shenzhen. Our whole family is grateful to you!”

The female officer did sympathize with Xia Ziyu – having a grandmother who extremely favored sons over daughters must have been difficult growing up. People who didn’t know Xia Ziyu’s true nature easily took a liking to her at first meeting; she had an honest, trustworthy face – the standard “good person” look from movies and TV.

The female officer kindly advised:

“If your financial situation allows, you’d better spend some money to privately investigate. The sooner people are found, the less they’ll suffer. The longer it takes, the slimmer the chances of finding them.”

The chances of trafficking victims escaping on their own were too low.

The police station had limited staff, and Yangcheng was a large city with a huge population. Unlike murder cases, trafficking cases gradually received less attention from the police. Follow-up relied on family members’ dedication.

Especially with female victims – the longer the delay, the more severe the physical and mental trauma, even if rescued!

As a woman herself, the female officer’s compassion compelled her to advise Xia Ziyu.

Xia Ziyu naturally showed gratitude. After completing the handover, Old Lady Xia was officially in her family’s care. While Old Lady Xia continued wailing, Xia Ziyu felt waves of impatience.

This old woman was heartless enough, only talking about losing Xia Hongbing, not mentioning Wang Jingui and Xia Hongxia at all. Wang Jingui was a daughter-in-law, but wasn’t the Hongxia family too?

Although Xia Ziyu knew Old Lady Xia’s character well, she still felt chilled by it.

“Grandmother, please stop crying. Besides Uncle being deceived, Third Aunt and Hongxia are also missing. The officer just said we should find the women first.”

Xia Dajun, having finished crying with his mother, his face tear-stained, clumsily wiped Old Lady Xia’s tears.

“Mother, don’t worry, I’ll find Third Brother’s family!”

Old Lady Xia opened her mouth but didn’t dare admit she hadn’t wanted to find Xia Hongxia and Wang Jingui. Her attention instantly shifted to Xia Ziyu. “Ziyu, why are you in Shenzhen too? Where are your parents? Dajun, your elder brother and sister-in-law are unfilial! They went to enjoy city life themselves, leaving me for Hongbing to care for!”

Her crooked face didn’t prevent Old Lady Xia from complaining.

Seeing Xia Ziyu reminded Old Lady Xia of how the eldest son and his wife had forcefully divided the family – a great humiliation that had overthrown her authority in the Xia family. How could she easily forget?

Xia Ziyu waited for her endless complaints to finish, then showed a bewildered expression:

“Grandmother, I don’t know about the family division you mentioned. As for my parents enjoying city life… well, what’s important now is for Second Uncle to recover quickly and help us find Uncle’s family of three.”

Xia Dajun felt uncomfortable – his niece showed such concern for him, yet in all this time reuniting with his mother, Old Lady Xia hadn’t asked once about his injury.

Couldn’t she see him sitting in this big wheelchair?
