After Juesheng and Qizhi left, Lin Chengyou raised his arm to examine his wound.
The injury on his arm was a minor matter, and even being pushed into the water could be dismissed as Teng Yuyi’s unintentional act. What truly concerned him was her collection of hidden weapons.
He had already inspected them earlier – they were all extremely vicious tools designed to harm.
Take the hairpin that had pierced him – not only was it razor-sharp, but its end was also covered in countless tiny barbs. Once it pierced the flesh, it would cause pain a hundred times worse than ordinary hidden weapons. What’s more, it was also poisoned – truly adding injury to injury. Only those who experienced it firsthand could understand the agony of being struck by such a weapon.
That wasn’t all – when Teng Yuyi pulled it out, she deliberately twisted those barbs inside his wound several times. Though the injury appeared small on the surface, the internal damage was considerable. After being soaked in water, the wound started bleeding again uncontrollably.
Frowning, he tore off his inner sleeve to bind his arm. He had initially thought these were specially made by the Teng family, but considering that Teng Shao spent years guarding the borders, how could he have time to commission such intricate and peculiar women’s weapons? Even if he wanted to give his daughter something for self-defense, there was plenty of straightforward protective gear available. Therefore, this must have been Teng Yuyi’s ingenious idea.
When she had tricked Juesheng into stealing the itching bugs for her, he had suspected she was up to no good. Her various actions tonight further confirmed his suspicions.
Consider how skillfully and decisively she had released those hidden weapons before losing consciousness – clearly, she was well-practiced in their use. She probably carried these weapons to harm others at any moment.
If she were from the jianghu world, he wouldn’t find it strange – after all, those who frequently face danger need means of self-protection. But for a noble young lady…
The manor had strict security, and strong servants protected her when she went out. During her leisure time in Yangzhou or Chang’an, she only associated with other noble ladies. In such a comfortable environment, no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t understand why Teng Yuyi would carry such weapons, and use them so viciously when she did.
He had heard she had just come of age. For someone so young to already be devoting effort to crafting such devious weapons for harming others – unless she had malicious intentions, there was hardly any other explanation.
After pondering for a moment, he raised his eyes to look at the quiet door before him. Earlier, when she was treating his poison, she had smiled sweetly while deliberately playing dirty tricks with her hands, and crucially, her face showed no trace of it, making it impossible for others to detect.
Both hypocritical and vicious – this Teng Yuyi had it all.
No need to rush – her purpose with the itching bugs had yet to be revealed. Rather than alerting her, better to observe quietly. If she truly intended to harm others, he could make her pay for her malice later.
He smiled meaningfully, glancing at Heminsheng and Eji beside him. Both stood like wooden chickens, and he deliberately spoke a few words to them, receiving responses only after a long while. This was good – no need to worry about them spoiling things.
For dealing with evil people, there should be appropriate methods. Regardless of what poison was in that Geji, after hearing his words, Teng Yuyi would surely be worried sick.
Best if it really was hui poison in the Geji – after being frightened, Teng Yuyi might behave herself for a few days and harm fewer people.
Thinking thus, Lin Chengyou locked the door from outside, ensuring it couldn’t be opened from within, before unhurriedly descending the steps.
He investigated the courtyard. The Caifeng Tower had an irregular shape, like a shallow well, and if golden toads were buried around it, it would naturally form a treasure basin.
This place was extremely yin and fertile, not at all suitable for suppressing evil spirits. It was truly puzzling why such a location had been chosen back then, yet it seemed to have been extremely effective, lasting for over a hundred years.
Who knew why the formation suddenly lost its power – was it just because the underground stone tablet was smashed? He crouched down to look carefully when suddenly he heard Teng Yuyi cry out in alarm from within the room. A trace of mockery appeared in his eyes as he deliberately waited a good while before standing up and dusting off his hands.
At the door, he knocked: “Young Master Wang?”
Hearing no response from Teng Yuyi – surely she hadn’t fainted from fright? Lin Chengyou kept the smile from his face, pretending concern as he asked: “Young Master Wang, are you alright?”
Still no response. Lin Chengyou figured it was about time and raised his hand to open the door. He had expected to see Teng Yuyi trembling while clutching a table leg, or frightened pale with disheveled hair, but instead found her standing calmly by the writing desk.
The smile in his eyes froze as Teng Yuyi picked up a fallen brush holder from beside her feet, saying with a smile: “My apologies, this just fell to the ground and startled me.”
Lin Chengyou glanced at the bed where Geji still lay sleeping soundly in proper clothes – Teng Yuyi was lucky it wasn’t hui poison in Geji after all.
Teng Yuyi walked towards Lin Chengyou as if nothing had happened: “There is indeed a mark on Geji’s chest, golden in color, shaped roughly like this. I’ve drawn it out – there was no gold pigment in the room, so I could only use ink instead.”
Her complexion was rosy, showing no signs of having been frightened. Lin Chengyou quietly watched her approach, suddenly smiled, and took the paper she handed over: “Much obliged, Young Master Wang.”
Teng Yuyi smiled sweetly: “It was nothing but a small effort.”
She snorted coldly inside – she understood perfectly well what Lin Chengyou was up to. In the past, if someone had bullied her like this, she wouldn’t have let it go so easily. She only regretted that she couldn’t act rashly now.
Lin Chengyou was cunning and intelligent, with a domineering nature. The matters of the itching bugs and hidden weapons had already made him suspicious. If she continued to tangle with him, she wouldn’t gain the upper hand.
Fortunately, this night was almost over. Once Huo Qiu was settled, she could leave immediately. Once out of this building, she would have no further entanglements with Lin Chengyou.
Lin Chengyou shook the paper, and upon seeing the mark Teng Yuyi had drawn, his brows furrowed – it wasn’t hui poison or fire poison, but lie poison.
How troublesome – this was the most difficult situation. To save Geji’s life, they could only–
He removed the medicine pouch from his waist and took out the pills, just as the sound of running footsteps came from outside. Juesheng and Qizhi each carried a bundle as they ran over.
Seeing Teng Yuyi in the room, their worried hearts settled – thankfully, Miss Teng hadn’t been frightened.
Lin Chengyou poured all the pills into his palm and called to Eji outside: “Madam E, please come in and quickly give these medicines to Geji.”
Seeing the pills, Juesheng and Qizhi exclaimed in alarm: “Senior Brother, this won’t do!”
Lin Chengyou looked at them: “What won’t do?”
“These are Yanxi Pills.” Juesheng and Qizhi rushed in and lowered their voices, “Don’t forget last time at Purple Cloud Tower, Senior Brother, you’ve already given away all your Liuyuan Pills. The Master hasn’t returned to Chang’an yet, and the temple doesn’t have enough medicinal ingredients. If you use up all the Yanxi Pills too, what if you–“
“I don’t want to give them to others, but this woman has been poisoned with lie poison. Do you have any other solutions?”
The two changed expression: “Lie poison?”
“The poison has already spread deep within her. If we delay any longer, we’ll be watching her die.”
Without another word, Juesheng and Qizhi snatched the pills from Lin Chengyou’s palm and ran to the bed to give them to Geji.
Teng Yuyi watched from the side, secretly pondering that Lin Chengyou indeed had some hidden ailment. Last time it was Liuyuan Pills, this time Yanxi Pills. She wondered if Daoist Qingxu had given special instructions – Lin Chengyou seemed to always carry pills with him, and this wasn’t for charitable purposes but for his use.
She couldn’t help but curiously observe Lin Chengyou – this young man appeared vigorous and full of life, truly not seeming ill at all.
Suddenly she recalled that strange dream from days ago, where after her death, her soul returned to her father’s ancestral temple three years later. There she encountered an odd scene – the palace servants were thrown into panic upon hearing that Lin Chengyou had been secretly harmed in the Northern Rong.
What a strange dream – regardless of whether it was true or false, why would she dream of Lin Chengyou?
Meanwhile, after Qizhi and Juesheng administered the medicine, Geji’s complexion improved. Heminsheng and Eji struggled into the room, trembling as they checked on Geji’s condition.
Lin Chengyou looked at the scar on Geji’s face and shook his head with a sigh: “This wound was caused by evil spirits, damaging the muscles and tendons. I fear recovery is hopeless.”
Hearing these words, Juesheng and Qizhi exchanged puzzled glances – Miss Geji’s wounds showed no signs of evil spirit involvement, they were inflicted by someone.
Their Senior Brother must see something they didn’t – why would he openly say such things?
Teng Yuyi had nothing else to do, so she also came forward to look. The sky had already brightened, and the morning light revealed every detail of Geji’s face. On her left cheek were four scratch marks, and where the scabs hadn’t formed, traces of spiral-shaped dead flesh could be seen.
“Poor thing,” Eji sighed as she tucked the quilt tighter around Geji.
Heminsheng’s face showed deep regret: “To buy Geji, this humble one spent no less than ten thousand gold, treating her like a Buddha every day, fearing to displease her. Just as she was about to make a name in Pingkang Ward, her beauty was ruined by evil spirits. Haven’t all my efforts gone to waste?”
Juesheng and Qizhi had initially thought Heminsheng was lamenting Geji’s fate, but hearing the latter part, they couldn’t help but curl their lips in disdain.
Just then, a temple servant ran in from outside: “Master, there are many Wu Hou and Buliangmen outside.”
Everyone in the room was startled, but Lin Chengyou said: “Perfect timing.”
He took the lead in walking out, with Teng Yuyi discreetly following behind the others. Halfway there, Huo Qiu came to meet them, saying softly: “Miss, everything has been arranged. Let’s go.”
Reaching the front tower, they saw the main hall was full of people, including the lizheng of Pingkang Ward. The officials looked up, barely having time to be surprised at Lin Chengyou’s wet clothes before hurriedly adjusting their attire and striding forward to meet him.
Teng Yuyi took the opportunity to call Eji aside, taking out a jewel and tossing it to her: “This is your reward. I’m taking charge of Juaner Li and Baozhu for half a year – you’re not to beat or scold them, nor let them entertain other guests.”
Eji’s eyelids flickered – trying to reserve Juaner Li and Baozhu for half a year with just one jewel was taking advantage of her position. She was extremely reluctant to agree, but after this night’s interaction, she had already guessed this young lady’s background was not simple. If nothing else, just looking at that guard beside her told her enough.
If she didn’t agree, she might bring trouble upon herself. Very well – Juaner Li and Baozhu were still young, and dealing with difficult customers was indeed troublesome. It would be good to let them quietly practice their arts for half a year. So she happily tucked the jewel into her bodice: “This servant understands. From today, Juaner Li and Baozhu will serve only Young Master Wang.”
Meanwhile, Lin Chengyou had changed into dry clothes and ordered someone to buy flatbread and wontons for his two junior brothers.
Juesheng and Qizhi sipped their hot wonton soup while listening to Lin Chengyou speak with the group of officials.
Lin Chengyou allowed the medical worker to rebandage his wound while drinking tea and saying: “Two great demons were sealed under the formation, and they broke free last night. One is a bird demon, while I haven’t yet determined the nature of the other.”
The officials’ expressions changed: “Your Highness, Chang’an hasn’t seen evil spirits for many years, yet in just a few months, several major incidents have occurred. Last time it was a tree demon stealing beautiful women’s bodies, and this time the demons are connected to a brothel.”
They dared not say more – why would such great demons frequently appear during this prosperous era of peace?
How could Lin Chengyou not guess what they were thinking? He smiled faintly: “I will soon uncover the origins of these demons. Though the two monsters disappeared after breaking free from the formation last night, they could reappear to harm people at any time. To prevent civilians from being hurt, starting today, I will request monks and Daoists from various temples to patrol the streets daily. I’m giving you advance notice so you’ll be prepared.”
The officials listened and agreed repeatedly.
“Besides cooperating with these patrols, you also need to send messages to every household – unless there’s an emergency, civilians should not go out at night without authorization.”
“We will arrange it immediately, Your Excellency.”
Qizhi saw that Lin Chengyou was only focused on arranging matters and hadn’t eaten breakfast, so he quietly pushed his soup bowl toward Lin Chengyou.
Juesheng was eating with sweat on his brow, and now dully raised his head: “Senior Brother, you’re only concerned about arranging food for us, but won’t eat yourself. The soup will get cold if you don’t drink it soon.”
Only then did Lin Chengyou pick up his chopsticks to eat: “You’re right, I am quite hungry.”
However, the officials beside him continued to seek his instructions on various matters, making the meal far from peaceful.
Juesheng and Qizhi finished their breakfast and rested their chins on their hands, sighing at the side. Poor Senior Brother – fortunately they were by his side, otherwise who would look after his daily needs?
Prince Cheng and his consort had left Chang’an for over half a year now, taking the second young master with them, saying that Senior Brother had traveled enough with them in his childhood, now it was time for er’di Ashuang’s turn.
They also said that last year, Princess Azhi had fallen behind in her studies due to traveling in Jiangnan, so this year she needed to stay in Chang’an to study properly. Princess Changyi happened to be reluctant to part with Princess Azhi, so Princess Azhi went to live in the palace.
That wasn’t all – even their Master had left Chang’an under the pretext of wandering the lands.
As a result, only the two junior brothers remained by the Senior Brother’s side.
This had never happened before. Master often said Senior Brother was mischievous and needed constant supervision from elders, yet this time both Master and Prince Cheng’s couple had left Chang’an one after another. It was truly puzzling – could they be deliberately trying to train Senior Brother?
The two simultaneously switched hands supporting their round cheeks as they continued to sigh. Though the Emperor and Empress were still in Chang’an and had always treated Senior Brother like their own son, it was said the Emperor was naturally lenient and the Empress was easy-going. While living in the palace was more than sufficient for supervising Princess Azhi, it might be inadequate for keeping Senior Brother in check.
Just as they were sighing deeply, Eji came over supporting Juaner Li.
Eji bent low and smiled at Lin Chengyou: “Your Highness, our Juaner Li is still somewhat dazed. Please help check if she still has demon poison in her body.”
Juaner Li nestled against Eji, looking somewhat vacant. Her skin was originally as white and delicate as jade, and after falling ill, she appeared even more delicately beautiful like pear blossoms in the rain. She seemed to have deliberately dressed up before coming, wearing a high-waisted apricot yellow dress.
Lin Chengyou turned his head to look at them: “Hasn’t she already taken the Qingxin Pills?”
Juesheng and Qizhi were also puzzled. Juaner Li could walk and talk, and aside from being somewhat weak in spirit, showed no signs of illness. They stood up to look – even Juaner Li’s eyes were clear, showing that no trace of poison remained in her body.
Juaner Li said embarrassedly: “Thank you for your trouble, Reverend Daoists, but this servant has no discomfort…”
But Eji kept pushing Juaner Li toward Lin Chengyou: “This servant feels that while Young Master Wang has already recovered completely from the same demon poison, Juaner Li is still weak and dizzy. This servant fears something might go wrong, which is why I wanted to ask Your Highness to examine her carefully again.”
Lin Chengyou made a sound of acknowledgment: “So that’s how it is. Juesheng, and Qizhi, examine Juaner Li carefully again. As for Madam E, I notice she also seems somewhat unwell–“
Eji’s face turned pale: “This servant too?”
“Give Madam E some Qingxin Pills as well.”
Juesheng and Qizhi scratched their heads in difficulty – Senior Brother must be annoyed by Madam E. Qingxin Pills could only be taken by those poisoned by demons; normal people who took them would inevitably suffer from diarrhea for several days.
“Young Daoist, quickly give this servant more pills.” Having heard Lin Chengyou’s words, Eji was already extremely anxious.
Qizhi kindly gave Eji just one pill, but she reached out and grabbed several.
The two hurried to take them back but were stopped by Lin Chengyou: “Hey, they’re just a few Qingxin Pills. If Madam E wants them, let her have them. How can you be so stingy?”
Eji swallowed all the medicine at once, but amazingly hadn’t forgotten her original purpose, smiling as she pulled Juaner Li closer, saying carefully: “Perhaps Your Highness could examine Juaner Li personally? She just mentioned seeing illusions–“
Lin Chengyou snorted, about to speak, when he seemed to recall something and raised his eyes to look at Juaner Li.
Hope immediately ignited in Eji’s heart, her eyes darting about: “Your Highness, Juaner Li…”
But Lin Chengyou’s gaze passed over them both, looking directly outside the door.
A patch of golden sunlight fell before the door, and in it stood a graceful Hu person – it was Teng Yuyi.
“Illusions…” Lin Chengyou looked thoughtfully at Teng Yuyi, suddenly saying to Juesheng and Qizhi, “Miss Geji should be awake now. Go to her room first and confirm something.”
***
Teng Yuyi lowered the carriage curtain and examined the jade sword in her palm by the morning light, observing its translucent clarity inside and out, feeling instantly refreshed.
After a whole night of struggle, she had finally broken the curse. This sword possessed great supernatural power – with it protecting her, not only would she no longer have those terrifying, lengthy nightmares, but she now had a weapon capable of breaking evil magic when encountering those strange people who had killed their master and servants in her previous life.
“Return to the Du Manor,” she cheerfully instructed Huo Qiu.
However, halfway there, the carriage suddenly stopped, and she heard Huo Qiu say: “Young Master, Daoist Juesheng from Qingyun Temple has arrived.”
“Juesheng?” Teng Yuyi lifted the window curtain and indeed saw a small carriage stopped by the road. Juesheng jumped down from it and ran bouncing to her carriage.
“Young Master Teng, may I have a word?”
“Come up.”
Having interacted several times with Teng Yuyi, Juesheng was already familiar with her and didn’t stand on ceremony, climbing up and saying: “Qizhi asked me to bring some talismans to Miss Teng.”
“Talismans?”
Juesheng took out a drawing from his sleeve: “Miss Geji has awakened. Just now, Senior Brother had her identify this picture. Geji said she had seen this well before, so Senior Brother’s guess wasn’t wrong – that demon uses people’s living memories to create illusions.”
Teng Yuyi took it and looked – it was the abandoned garden she had drawn.
“Qizhi saw Juaner Li’s childhood memories, and you, Young Master Teng, saw Geji’s memories. When you saw the illusion on the second floor, Geji was still in her room, so the demon didn’t randomly abduct people but rather set targets early on. We guess these illusions are like announcements – first setting up illusions, then harming people.”
Teng Yuyi understood: “You’re worried the demon will come for me next?”
Juesheng nodded: “That’s right. That demon once disguised itself as a decorated young gentleman to poison you, then transformed into Geji’s appearance outside the window to trick you. Although it’s gone into hiding now, Senior Brother feels the demon is very interested in you. Qizhi was worried when he heard this and specially asked me to bring you these talismans.”
He then took out a stack of talismans from his chest: “Miss Teng, after you return, paste these talismans on your doors and windows, and the demon won’t dare intrude.”
At this point, Juesheng grinned: “Actually, with the jade sword protecting Miss Teng, the demon won’t easily dare approach you, but having extra talismans won’t hurt.”
Teng Yuyi accepted the paper talismans: “Qizhi’s hand is injured yet…”
Juesheng waved his hand: “You know what Qizhi is like – fussy as an old woman. He says better safe than sorry, so he insists on drawing more talismans for Miss Teng. But I was also worried about his injured hand, so I only let him draw a few – the rest of these I drew myself.”
Teng Yuyi quietly looked at Juesheng. Seeing her suddenly fall silent, Juesheng became somewhat awkward: “Miss Teng…”
Teng Yuyi turned back to take two boxes of pastries from the table: “These are jade dew balls my aunt made yesterday. Try them and see if you like them. The other box is for Daoist Qizhi – please take it to him for me.”
Juesheng’s eyes couldn’t help but linger on the lacquer boxes: “…Senior Brother just gave us breakfast earlier.”
“How far can one breakfast go? These are filled with spirit sand paste and vegetarian filling. Don’t worry about eating them, Daoist.” Teng Yuyi opened the box lid, letting out wisps of delicate fragrance. “Doesn’t it smell good?”
“It does.” Juesheng swallowed.
Without another word, Teng Yuyi stuffed both boxes of jade dew balls into Juesheng’s arms: “If you like them after trying them, I’ll have more sent to Qingyun Temple another day. Besides my aunt’s spirit sand paste, our Teng Manor’s cook is also very good at making pastries.”
Juesheng’s small face turned red with joy: “Then thank you, Miss Teng. Oh right, please also convey mine and Qizhi’s thanks to Madam Du.”
Teng Yuyi suddenly remembered something: “Was Geji’s facial injury caused by an ‘evil ghost’?”
Juesheng shook his head: “Qizhi and I don’t think so, but Senior Brother announced to others that it was caused by a fierce ghost. I guess he must have his considerations for saying that. Miss Teng, don’t you find many strange things about this Caifeng Tower? The strange deaths of the money shop owner couple at the front, the strange demons sealed in the back courtyard, and the strange way Geji was injured. All these peculiarities are truly puzzling. Senior Brother has already reported to his superiors at the Court of Judicial Review – they’ll probably investigate thoroughly.”
“Your Senior Brother works at the Court of Judicial Review?”
Juesheng asked in surprise: “Miss Teng didn’t know?”
Teng Yuyi smiled – was she supposed to know?
Juesheng said with a grin: “Last year, Senior Brother went to take the Mingjing examination. Prince Cheng and his wife thought Senior Brother was just playing around, but unexpectedly he placed first in the Mingjing exam, then passed the Ministry of Personnel’s selection test and went to work at the Court of Judicial Review. Now Senior Brother is a Pingshi (Note 1) of the lowest rank at the Court, often investigating cases in the wards and streets.”
Teng Yuyi nodded. Though the position of Court Pingshi wasn’t high-ranking, it required a thorough knowledge of the law codes and experience in handling criminal cases. After completing the term, one could often be directly promoted to Censorate Inspector. Because of its low position but important duties, it had always been a key position that princes and nobles’ sons eagerly competed for.
Juesheng stood up: “Miss Teng, this poor Daoist must hurry to Dongming Temple, so I’ll take my leave now.”
He jumped down from the carriage, then suddenly stuck his head back in: “I almost forgot the most important thing – Senior Brother asked me to tell Miss Teng: stay home unless necessary these days.”
Teng Yuyi secretly frowned at hearing Lin Chengyou’s name, but smiled and said: “I understand.”
After Juesheng left, Huo Qiu drove the carriage again. Just as they were approaching Du Manor, a procession of carriages came toward them from the opposite direction.
Huo Qiu pulled the reins and said: “It’s Uncle Cheng.”
Uncle Cheng galloped up, dismounting to say: “Young Miss, this old servant returned to the manor this morning and heard that Miss was inexplicably trapped in a brothel in Pingkang Ward last night. What exactly happened?”
Teng Yuyi lifted the carriage curtain, seeing Uncle Cheng’s forehead beaded with anxious sweat, and hurriedly said: “I’m fine. I’ll explain everything in detail when we return. Is there any news from the Zhenguo Marquis Manor?”
Uncle Cheng was her father’s most capable deputy, and the news he gathered was never wrong.
“There are many rumors in Chang’an already, all saying the young miss and Young General Duan’s happy occasion is approaching.” Uncle Cheng said with an ashen face, “In this old servant’s opinion, the Zhenguo Marquis Manor fears that night’s events spreading, so they’re deliberately spreading rumors. If they can get you married earlier, naturally no one will investigate Young General Duan and Second Lady Dong’s matter. I hear they’re just waiting for Old Madam Duan’s birthday celebration to pass, then the Marquis will visit the master to discuss marriage arrangements.”
Teng Yuyi gave a cold laugh. It seemed the Duan family was deliberately trying to harm her for Duan Ningyuan’s future career.
She thought for a moment – last time at Purple Cloud Tower’s entrance, Duan Wenyin had mentioned Old Madam’s birthday. After returning, one thing led to another, and she had almost forgotten about it.
“Today is Old Madam Duan’s birthday. How are the arrangements for what I asked about?”
Uncle Cheng took out a package from his chest: “Rest assured, this old servant has arranged everything.”
Teng Yuyi smiled as she accepted the package of itching bugs, then handed another package hidden in the carriage to Uncle Cheng: “This package contains medicine powder. Take it to the prison for Second Lady Dong’s use. Remember to leave no traces, and especially don’t let Duan Ningyuan notice.”
Uncle Cheng hesitated – if they were poisoning someone, why provide an antidote? But thinking the young miss must have her reasons, he accepted the medicine package.
“Very well.” Uncle Cheng took out an invitation card. “This is the card the Duan Manor sent a few days ago. Tonight they’ve invited not only the young miss but also Master Du’s family. This old servant has prepared birthday gifts for Old Madam Duan.”
Teng Yuyi nodded with a smile: “We must properly pay our respects to Old Madam Duan tonight. Let’s go to Aunt’s house first.”
Soon they reached the Du Manor’s entrance. Huo Qiu got down to knock, and when the elderly servant opened the door and saw Teng Yuyi, he said cheerfully: “Young Miss has come so early! Did you rest well at home last night?”
Teng Yuyi nodded and quickly entered. It seemed Uncle and Aunt had made arrangements early – even the Du Manor’s old servants were kept in the dark about last night’s events.
She made a show of instructing Uncle Cheng: “Bring in the things I brought from home.”
Uncle Cheng and Huo Qiu responded: “Yes.”
In the main hall, Du Shaotang was anxiously pacing back and forth. Looking up to see Teng Yuyi, he rushed over and said in a low voice: “Cousin Yu, you’re finally back. Father and Mother are nearly worried sick.”
Teng Yuyi secretly fumed – if Lin Chengyou hadn’t prevented her from returning home, how could she have made Uncle and Aunt worry all night?
Du Shaotang asked repeatedly: “Cousin Yu, did you go to Caifeng Tower last night? When Prince Cheng’s heir sent word, we thought that person was lying, but he was Prince Cheng’s attendant – we had to believe him. Prince Cheng’s heir said you were drinking and seeking pleasure at Caifeng Tower. What exactly happened?”
“It can’t be explained in a few words. Where are Uncle and Aunt now?”
“In Sister’s room. Mother asked me to wait outside and bring you to them when I saw you.”
The two hurried to the back courtyard. Master Du and Madam Du were anxiously pacing in the room, while Du Tinglan stood under the corridor, worriedly looking out with a face full of concern.
Du Shaotang ran over first: “Cousin Yu is here.”
Du Tinglan rushed down the steps in a few strides, and Madam Du came out upon hearing: “It’s good that you’re here.”
Several people entered the room together. Inside, Du Shaotang unexpectedly noticed the large mustache on Teng Yuyi’s face and fell back in shock: “Why are you dressed as a man? This- this is most improper!”
Madam Du was also extremely anxious: “Child… what exactly happened last night?”
Teng Yuyi accepted the sugarcane juice her cousin personally handed her and drank it in one gulp, sighing: “Uncle, Aunt, don’t worry. Last night was truly unexpected.”
She then took out the jade sword: “I happened to obtain this sword while coming to Chang’an. It’s said to be a Daoist treasure that can drive away ghosts and evil spirits. For the past half year, I’ve often encountered evil spirits and couldn’t sleep peacefully at night. Since obtaining this sword, all evil spirits around me have vanished. Aunt, you witnessed this sword’s supernatural power last time at Purple Cloud Tower.”
Madam Du nodded in surprise: “I’ve been meaning to ask about this sword’s origins, but with recent busy matters, I forgot to ask.”
Teng Yuyi said: “That day, for some unknown reason, this sword suddenly lost its spiritual light. I went to Dongming Temple to inquire, and the Daoist there said only the Daoists at Qingyun Temple could help restore the sword’s spiritual power…”
She explained the previous night’s events in one breath, though naturally made some additions and omissions to avoid worrying her Uncle and Aunt.
“If Uncle doesn’t believe me, you can inquire in Pingkang Ward. Prince Cheng’s heir should still be at Caifeng Tower, and those officials probably haven’t left either.”
Du Yuizhi repeatedly stroked his beard: “Even so, you should have informed your Uncle and Aunt before leaving.”
Teng Yuyi said righteously: “I haven’t been back to Chang’an for a long time and sincerely wanted to go out for a walk. I thought I’d return quickly – who knew such things would happen?”
Du Shaotang timidly interjected: “Father, this can’t be blamed on Cousin Yu. You know Prince Cheng’s heir’s temperament – when he wants to do something, he doesn’t consider much else.”
Du Tinglan, seeing her father’s expression soften, curiously picked up the jade sword: “How is it? Did you break the curse?”
“Yes.” Teng Yuyi stroked the emerald blade. “Another day, if we encounter evil spirits again, I’ll cut down a demon in front of Sister to see.”
Du Tinglan startled: “That won’t be necessary – Sister would faint before you could cut down the demon. Besides, hopefully, everything will be peaceful from now on, and we won’t encounter any more evil spirits.”
Du Shaotang squeezed over to ask: “Cousin Yu, were there demons at Caifeng Tower? Did you see them? What did they look like?”
Master Du, maintaining his dignity, still refused to join the conversation, but seeing his wife and children talking excitedly, couldn’t resist coming over and, using Du Tinglan’s hand, curiously examined the jade sword.
Madam Du took the opportunity to say to Teng Yuyi: “You’ve been busy all night and still have that mustache pasted on – quickly go bathe and change clothes, then have breakfast and get some good sleep.”
When Teng Yuyi came out from her bath, Master Du and his son had returned to the front courtyard, and Madam Du was busy arranging lunch. Only Du Tinglan waited for her in the room.
Du Tinglan said gently: “Don’t mind Father’s fierce appearance and scolding. Last night he went out to look for you several times. After returning to the manor, he persuaded Mother to rest while he waited outside for news. Only after hearing you were safe did he feel relieved.”
Teng Yuyi sighed: “Actually, how could I feel at ease? This morning, as soon as I got out of Caifeng Tower, I rushed home without stopping.”
Du Tinglan pushed Teng Yuyi sympathetically: “Look at you, you can barely keep your eyes open. Quickly go to bed. Oh right, I heard about Old Madam Duan’s birthday – the Zhenguo Marquis Manor sent us invitation cards.”
Teng Yuyi looked at Du Tinglan: “Sister already knows?”
“Mother told me about that night. I never imagined this Duan person could be so contemptible.”
Teng Yuyi slowly climbed into bed. Her cousin, usually kind and gentle, never quarreled with anyone, but for the first time spoke harshly – and it was to curse Duan Ningyuan.
“No one can make you suffer such grievance.” Du Tinglan tucked in the quilt for Teng Yuyi. “It’s good to see such a hypocrite’s true face early. This marriage must be called off. Fortunately, Uncle is returning to Chang’an in a few days – the sooner this matter is resolved, the better. Tonight at Old Madam Duan’s birthday banquet, Mother and I will accompany you.”
She smoothed Teng Yuyi’s hair and stood up: “We can talk more after you wake up. Sister will leave now – get some good rest.”
Teng Yuyi pillowed one arm under her cheek, watching her cousin move about the room.
Du Tinglan lowered the bed curtains and quietly walked to the window. Fearing the maids and women in the courtyard would be noisy, she closed the window before leaving.
The room was quiet and dim. As drowsiness washed over Teng Yuyi, just as she closed her eyes, suddenly a tiny voice came to her ear: “Hey.”
Teng Yuyi sprang up, lifting the curtains to look around, but there wasn’t a single person in the room.
The voice came from behind her again: “Don’t look anymore, I’m right here.”
Teng Yuyi’s soul nearly left her body as she fell from the bed in shock. Turning her head in amazement, she saw a tiny old man about two inches tall sitting on the bed.
This old man had white hair and an aged face, wearing a short grey hemp garment. Though elderly, his cheeks were rosy and bright, with three strands of silvery white beard hanging from his chin, floating with somewhat immortal grace. However, his eyes were as small as mung beans, and his expression was somewhat caustic.
The old man sat leaning by the pillow with one leg crossed, his whole being emanating laziness.
Teng Yuyi was greatly shocked – she had never seen a palm-sized person before. Where had he appeared from? And she had so many of Juesheng’s talismans hidden in her clothes, yet they had no effect.
A thousand thoughts raced through her mind as she got up to run to the door. She had hidden the jade sword under her pillow – if only she had kept it in her arms.
“Looking for this?” The little old man sprang up, pushed aside the pillow, and dragged out the jade sword from underneath.
Teng Yuyi felt somewhat desperate – the little old man wasn’t afraid of this sword.
“Who are you? What are you doing here?” She tried to calm herself. “I advise you not to touch this sword. It can deal with demons with hundreds of years of cultivation. A little thing like you could be ground to ashes at any moment.”
The little old man put his hands on his hips and laughed: “Young lady, I just love how you can lie with a straight face. As clever as you are, can’t you guess who I am?”
“I can’t guess, and I don’t want to.” Teng Yuyi quickly retreated to the door. “The sun is strong outside. If you’re not afraid of your soul scattering, feel free to chase after me.”
As she turned to open the door, the little old man stamped his foot and said: “Foolish thing, this old man is the spirit of this sword!”
Spirit? Teng Yuyi was half skeptical. Last time when Juesheng and Qizhi tried to trick her about the jade sword, they told her many things about weapon spirits, such as the soul-locking beast that Lin Chengyou carried, which contained a spirit that loved to eat sugarcane juice.
“You don’t believe me?” The little old man rolled up his sleeves, jumped onto the sword, and began muttering incantations. Soon he disappeared into the sword blade.
Shortly after, the sword body glowed with a faint red light, and the little old man emerged again.
Teng Yuyi stared in amazement. If the old man were an evil spirit, how could he merge with a Daoist artifact?
The old man patted the jade sword: “Now do you believe?”
Teng Yuyi stopped doubtfully: “You’re the sword spirit?”
“I am! I am!” The old man stamped his foot irritably. “If you hadn’t helped me overcome a tribulation, I wouldn’t have deigned to come out and meet you.”
Teng Yuyi opened her mouth but was too shocked to know whether to leave or stay.
The old man snorted: “Why aren’t you speaking? Don’t you have anything to ask?”
Teng Yuyi started: “I- you—”
She collected herself and asked: “Respected… Sword Immortal Uncle, what do you mean I helped you overcome a tribulation?”
“What Sword Immortal Uncle?” The little old man sat cross-legged. “This old man has a name. You can call me Xiaoya.”
“Xiaoya?” Teng Yuyi showed a strange expression.
The little old man became unhappy: “Haven’t you heard ‘My life has limits, while knowledge has none’? Not daring to claim ‘Limitless’, surely ‘Little Limit’ isn’t too much? I’m called the Xiaoya Sword – this name was bestowed by my first master, the Venerable Blue Lotus. Since this is our first meeting, we should use formal names.”
Teng Yuyi frowned and raised her hand: “Wait, let me sort this out. I obtained this sword by chance on my way to Chang’an. It’s been with me for many days – why haven’t I ever seen you appear before?”
Xiaoya stroked his beard: “Though I fell into your hands, I was still trapped within the sword. Whether you could use me depended on your destiny. A few days ago when you encountered that little demon lord of the Lin family, he placed a death spirit ring on you – this was the first tribulation I faced upon returning to the world. Only by helping me break this curse could you truly release me. If you hadn’t had the ability, I would have vanished within three days, at most waiting several decades or a century until the next master appeared.”
Teng Yuyi was stunned. If what this old man said was true, she should be grateful she sought out Lin Chengyou in time. Though it involved some twists and turns, she had managed to keep this magical weapon.
She asked doubtfully: “Being a Daoist artifact, why speak of tribulations?”
“How could a divine weapon like me be used by just anyone?” Xiaoya puffed up his whiskers. “Do you know how I came to be? When the Immortal Master Yuanyang was cultivating in the Treasure Flower Celestial Palace, I was the jade tablet in the master’s hand. The master used me daily to record disasters across the lands, and over time I gained spiritual awareness. Once, the master’s disciple, the Venerable Blue Lotus, asked Yuanyang for a magical weapon, and the Celestial Master bestowed me to him. Blue Lotus found the jade tablet unwieldy and too small, so he made me into a small jade sword. Not only did I choose my masters, but the Venerable Blue Lotus also placed restrictions on me – each time I met a new master, I had to undergo a tribulation. Without breaking the tribulation, they cannot command me.”
Teng Yuyi understood and smiled: “So that means I’m your new master, Xiaoya?”
Xiaoya muttered under his breath: “My previous masters were either highly virtuous immortals or chivalrous swordsmen. This is the first time I’ve encountered a girl like you – you think I’m willing? Thinking that from now on I can only accompany you in trivial matters, it’s truly a waste of talent.”
He cleared his throat and said loudly: “Yesterday’s events barely qualify as passing. But whether you’re truly a qualified master still needs observation for some days. If you don’t treat me well, I’ll find another new master. I think that Lin Boy isn’t bad – he often exorcises demons and ghosts, and his abilities are passable. If I could follow him, at least I’d be put to proper use.”
Teng Yuyi snorted internally. Lin Chengyou? This little old man must be doing this on purpose. Knowing she didn’t get along with Lin Chengyou, he deliberately provoked her with these words. Besides, if he had a choice, why would he bother telling her all this?
She said pleasantly: “Xiaoya since we’re so fated, we should help each other. Whether I treat you well or not, you should know from last night’s events. Look how much effort I put into helping restore your spiritual power.”
Xiaoya lazily fell back onto the pillow, crossing his legs again: “The reason you worked so hard was just because you worried about ghosts entering your dreams. On the surface, you broke the curse for me, but speaking, it was for yourself. From now on you’ll be my master, and there’s far more to do than just this.”
Teng Yuyi’s eyelid twitched – this old man immediately saw through her thoughts. She said casually: “Tell me, what would count as treating you well?”
“I love peaches of immortality. Every day you must get me peaches to eat. If there are no immortal peaches, juicy sweet fruits will do.” Xiaoya stretched lazily. “Also, I love fine wine. Without drinking for a few days, my spiritual power greatly diminishes. At most every three days, you must bring fine wine to offer me.”
Just that? Teng Yuyi deliberately pondered: “Immortal peaches and fine wine aren’t easy to obtain. I’ll try my best.”
Xiaoya turned and sat up: “Don’t try to fool me. I smelled the wine on you long ago. Last night at Caifeng Tower, you ordered several pots of Dragon Cream wine using that Lin boy’s name. Wasn’t it good? I was so tempted then. I don’t demand jade nectar or immortal wine – anyway, next time you drink, just remember to save a pot for me first. Also—”
There’s more? Teng Yuyi teased: “I’m just a ‘little girl’ – how could I have such great abilities?”
Xiaoya never expected Teng Yuyi to mock him with his own words. He waved his hand: “Little girl is little girl, but who made you my newly chosen master? As long as you’re willing, not a single necessary thing can be neglected. I’m different from other magical weapons – I fear filthy things most. To maintain spiritual power long-term, I need regular cleaning with Embryonic Breath Transformation Water. Every forty-nine days, you must prepare these things for me.”
Teng Yuyi was stunned: “What is Embryonic Breath Transformation Water?”
“It concerns the way of yellow qi and yang essence – you wouldn’t understand even if I explained. Let me ask you, yesterday when we encountered that golden demon in the small Buddha hall, did you notice I was warmer than usual?”
Teng Yuyi thought: “I think that did happen.”
“That’s because yesterday that little Daoist Qizhi was injured and accidentally dripped blood on the sword. He has the body of a Three Pure Ones’ child – his blood essence is pure yang. It immediately caused my three breaths to unite, greatly increasing my spiritual power. We can’t always use Three Pure Ones’ children’s blood to nourish the sword body, so I have to settle for the next best thing. Fresh blood isn’t easy to get, but hair and sweat can also nourish. I’m too lazy to search everywhere, and yesterday that Lin boy and his two junior brothers weren’t bad – it doesn’t matter whose, just regularly get me a bucket of it.”
Teng Yuyi’s face turned green – he wanted her to get others’ bath water.
She smiled: “Impossible.”
Xiaoya narrowed his eyes: “Is Miss Teng refusing?”
Teng Yuyi brought over a plate of muscat grapes from the table: “Fresh fruit all you can eat, and wine – as long as you’re not picky about the taste, I guarantee regular offerings. The third condition is non-negotiable.”
Xiaoya said angrily: “Then there’s no need to discuss further. Take care, Miss Teng. This old man will leave now – at worst I’ll wait for the next master.”
As he spoke, he bounced up, making a show of wanting to jump onto the sword. However, after chanting for a while and not hearing Teng Yuyi speak, he couldn’t help secretly turning his head, and finding Teng Yuyi watching him from behind.
He rolled up his sleeves: “I’m leaving.”
Teng Yuyi played with the plate of grapes, saying regretfully: “Who made my fate with the Sword Immortal insufficient? I haven’t even had the chance to offer these fruits to the Sword Immortal before he wants to leave. Since that’s the case, I won’t see you off.”
Xiaoya’s beard trembled. He had been trapped at the bottom of the water for a hundred years, so lonely he didn’t even have anyone to talk to, opening his eyes only to dim shadows, hearing nothing but the constant sound of flowing water. He had nearly gone mad from loneliness and boredom. Finally waiting for this Teng Yuyi, before he could even properly eat and drink, should he slink away?
He stared at the plate of grapes. How long had it been since he’d eaten clean fruit? Just looking at them made his mouth water. After hesitating for a while without hearing Teng Yuyi try to keep him, he steeled himself and jumped down from the couch, leaping onto the round table and grabbing a grape to bite: “Fine, fine. If Miss Teng hasn’t decided, this old man won’t force you. If you don’t get it, then don’t – at worst my spiritual power will be somewhat weaker.”
Teng Yuyi suddenly lifted the plate of grapes high. Unable to reach a second grape, Xiaoya glared at Teng Yuyi: “Hey, Miss Teng, what do you mean by this? You just said fresh fruit all I could eat – surely you’re not going back on your word?”
“I am your master, taking care of you is proper.” Teng Yuyi said seriously. “But since you’ve decided to stay and serve me, you should follow some rules. To say nothing else, let’s first establish three principles. The first is that you must show me proper respect. For example, if I haven’t called you out, you can’t emerge on your own. When I haven’t told you to leave, you can’t depart without permission.”
Xiaoya was dumbfounded – this girl was truly something.
If he could bear to leave, he would have left earlier. Teng Yuyi had already seen through his thoughts, and he no longer had any leverage to throw tantrums before her. In the future, trying to threaten this new master would probably be impossible.
He snorted without speaking. Teng Yuyi held the fruit bowl and started to walk out. Xiaoya grabbed his hair in exasperation: “From now on, whatever Miss Teng says, this old man will do.”
Only then did Teng Yuyi smile and return the fruit plate before Xiaoya: “I haven’t thought of the second and third principles yet. I’ll tell you when I think of them.”
