Chapter 23: Help

She’d anticipated what she might encounter after order collapsed.

But she hadn’t expected it to happen so quickly.

During the few short steps of their approach, her mind was a jumble of thoughts. She suddenly remembered many things.

She remembered her family doctor who would take liberties during examinations. At first she was naive and didn’t quite understand, but later when she realized, one phone call to her mother.

The result? The doctor turned the tables, saying he worked conscientiously without daring any negligence, that the young miss wanted to intimidate him, deliberately lying.

Her temper truly wasn’t good.

So the doctor’s words seemed quite credible. When her mother dismissed the doctor, she gave him a large sum of money to soothe his “wounded heart from being tormented by the young miss.”

Bai Youwei thought of these past events, slowly clutching her rabbit tighter…

She’d made her decision.

The three approached, using lewd gazes to size her up.

They were slovenly, trashy, eyes turbid.

Not only that, she guessed these people’s minds weren’t clever either. They’d survived till now purely on ignorant, fearless primitive savagery.

Previously at society’s margins, rejected and despised, now they’d become leaders of the survivor group, receiving respect and followers. What could be more inflating than such a transformation?

Bai Youwei propped herself up on one elbow, using a panicked voice to shout: “What are you doing? Don’t come over! Don’t come over…”

The adjacent restaurant suddenly fell silent.

Those small talking voices all disappeared, as if everyone had simultaneously died in their sleep at that instant.

Three thugs—one grabbed Bai Youwei’s arm, one went to pull off her dress, the remaining one stood to the side, excitedly holding up his phone to record.

“Let me go! Don’t!… Don’t! Help…”

She struggled desperately, using a thin, weak voice to call for help. The metal shelving beneath her made creaking sounds, mixing with the thugs’ malicious laughter, sounding so clear yet so grating in this silent night.

No one came to save her.

People, ah—always generous when not endangering their own interests, but at other times, they perform selfishness and indifference to perfection.

Perhaps the commotion was too loud, making pretending to sleep untenable. The bespectacled man came over from the restaurant wearing his coat.

The thugs’ movements stopped. Among them, a tall, thin one wearing a necklace used an especially provocative gaze to look at the bespectacled man, the knife in his hand lightly tossing, up and down, the blade tip pointing forward, full of threatening meaning.

The bespectacled man looked at the knife, then at Bai Youwei curled in a ball. He frowned, looked away and said: “Keep it down. Her brother will be back soon.”

The tall thin one smiled, glancing at his companions, his lips full of mockery: “Did you all hear? General Manager Zhang wants us to keep it down.”

The other two grinned wickedly, deliberately raising their voices: “We heard! Keep it down!”

As the words fell, they doubled over laughing, utterly arrogant.

The bespectacled man’s face grew increasingly ugly.

But ultimately he said nothing more, turning to return to the restaurant, unwilling to handle this troublesome matter.

“Coward!” A thug spat at his retreating back, eyes full of contempt.

Having provoked the leader’s authority, the thugs felt quite accomplished, not noticing Shen Mo had already returned and was now standing cold-faced at the supermarket entrance.

Bai Youwei gripped the plush rabbit, shaking her head at him almost imperceptibly.

Shen Mo’s brow furrowed. He knew what she was thinking.

When they’d first entered the service area, they’d charged the plush rabbit for a while. Bai Youwei now probably wanted to test the power of “One-Tenth Me.”

But lightning was hard to control. Whether she could strike people as precisely as the Inspector, Bai Youwei had no confidence. To prevent accidental injury, she didn’t want Shen Mo to approach.

If the power proved insufficient, calling him for backup wouldn’t be too late.
