Chapter 4: The Correct Finish Line

The finish line corresponded to the starting line at the opposite end, with a semi-transparent sign serving as the marker.

Because it was semi-transparent, no one had noticed it earlier.

The finish sign’s length matched the track. Its material was unclear, yet it could float high in mid-air. Now that the rabbit-headed person pointed to it, two extremely thick black characters appeared on the sign: Finish Line.

Below “Finish Line,” there were also two arrows, pointing respectively to Lane 1 on the left and Lane 2 on the right.

Tracks at sports fields usually had six or eight lanes, but here there were only two.

“The track is 200 meters in total length. Pass through the correct finish line to enter the next round. After three rounds, the game ends.” The rabbit-headed person explained the rules.

“Will those rabbits run with us?” Shen Mo glanced at the rabbits not far away.

“Of course.” The rabbit-headed person maintained a gentle tone. “Rabbits are an important part of the tortoise and hare race. Contestants must avoid being caught by the rabbits.”

Bai Youwei pressed her lips together and cautiously asked it: “If we’re caught, what will happen?”

The rabbit-headed person made no sound.

Though it gave no response, somehow, Bai Youwei felt it seemed to be smiling…

The woman cowering behind her husband asked tremulously: “Will they… will they bite people?”

Bite people?

Others mentally scoffed: Look at those teeth. Forget biting people—saying they eat people wouldn’t be strange!

“Alright everyone, the rules explanation ends here. Please follow me to the starting position. The race is about to begin.” The rabbit-headed person turned around, holding the top hat with one hand, and walked toward the starting line.

Everyone looked at each other, you looking at me, me looking at you, hesitating to move forward.

The charcoal-like corpse on the ground was still there, faintly emitting a burnt odor. Under the sunlight, the semi-transparent finish sign in the distance reflected brilliant radiance, as if beckoning and calling to everyone.

Finally unable to resist the fear in their hearts, they dragged heavy steps, moving forward one step at a time, following the rabbit-headed person ahead.

Shen Mo looked down at Bai Youwei: “Carrying you on my back should be faster than holding you while running, but if you’re afraid of those rabbits, I can hold you.”

The rabbits clearly had offensive capabilities. If attacking from behind, both the back and legs would be vulnerable areas.

“Better carry me on your back.” Bai Youwei also calmed down. “Running requires not only speed but also balance, and you’ll need agility to dodge the rabbits. Holding me would be very troublesome.”

The two stopped to adjust their positions. Bai Youwei climbed onto Shen Mo’s back.

They fell to the rear of the group.

“Are you afraid?” Shen Mo asked her.

“Yes.” Bai Youwei answered in a muffled voice.

Anyone encountering this situation couldn’t possibly not be afraid.

She asked Shen Mo in a soft voice: “What about you? Are you afraid? If those rabbits run very fast…”

If they ran very fast, carrying her would undoubtedly slow him down.

Shen Mo supported Bai Youwei’s legs, walking forward with steady steps. “Remember what the rabbit-headed person just said? It said there are three rounds of competition total. If the rabbits’ speed were very fast, one round could end the race. There’d be no need to set up three rounds.”

Bai Youwei was a bit surprised. She hadn’t expected Shen Mo had already analyzed to this point.

She looked toward the starting line ahead.

Those giant rabbits looked ferocious, but careful observation revealed that each rabbit’s limbs were somewhat uncoordinated—limping, twitching, scratching the ground and kicking, and several were red-eyed, tearing at their own flesh, their state frenzied. If they ran, their speed might not necessarily be fast.

Bai Youwei thought for a moment and said quietly to Shen Mo: “The rabbit-headed person kept emphasizing passing through the correct finish line. So if we want to win the race, we don’t need to run first—rather, we first need to run faster than the rabbits, and second, find the correct finish line.”

Hearing this, Shen Mo said: “Which side is the correct finish line?”

Bai Youwei fell silent.

Since the race had three rounds, the finish line would certainly be different each time. Perhaps on the left, perhaps the right. The answer should have hints somewhere within this 200-meter race.

Even without hints, blind guessing had a 50% success rate.

The problem now was they didn’t know what consequences awaited those who ran to the wrong finish line.
