Because the kitchen had burned down, the inn didn’t serve dinner that evening.
Not that it was a particularly big deal.
Players never entered a game empty-handed — before logging in, they always made various preparations, and food was naturally among the essentials.
So when dinnertime arrived, everyone stayed in their own rooms and didn’t come downstairs.
Lu Yuwen had also regained consciousness again at this point.
This time his condition was considerably better than the previous two times. Not only was his mind clear, but he could get out of bed and take a few steps — the numbness in his hands and feet had mostly faded, and he was essentially recovered.
Su Man accompanied him walking up and down the stairs a few times, then urged him to drink more water to boost his metabolism and flush the drug out of his system faster.
Zhu Shu found it a little amusing. “Su Man, you’re usually so carefree — I didn’t expect you to be such a careful caretaker.”
Su Man frowned, exasperated. “I don’t have a choice — who told him to be so helpless at everything!”
She’d barely finished speaking when she spotted Lu Yuwen’s cup tilting slightly in his hand, the water inside about to spill — Su Man’s hand shot out and steadied the cup in an instant!
“See! See! Didn’t I say so?” Su Man took the cup from him, utterly at a loss with Lu Yuwen. “I take my eyes off you for one second and something goes wrong! Lu Yuwen, are you some ancient-dynasty scholar who just time-traveled here? Pay a little attention, would you!”
Lu Yuwen smiled gently, not the least bit upset. “My wrists are still a bit weak.”
“Ugh… fine, I’ll just feed you then.” Su Man held the cup for him and slowly helped him drink.
Lu Yuwen half-leaned against her, looking like a frail scholar — small, helpless, and pitiful.
Zhu Shu watched for a moment, then looked away and whispered to Bai Youwei beside her: “Su Man is done for.”
“Indeed.” Bai Youwei glanced over at the two of them and nodded in agreement. “She’s done for.”
“You two, what are you saying over there?” Su Man finished with the water and turned to look at Zhu Shu and Bai Youwei. “What’s all this ‘done for’ business?”
“You misheard — I said goodnight.” Zhu Shu smiled and stood up. “It’s almost time. After midnight everyone has to stay in their own rooms.”
Su Man dragged the bedside table closer, setting the water cup and some compressed biscuits on top so that Lu Yuwen could reach them from the bed, then gave him her instructions:
“We’re heading out — get some rest, and be careful when you drink, don’t spill it again. Your slippers are on the right side of the bed, and the bedside lamp switch is behind the base.”
Lu Yuwen nodded. “Alright. You all stay safe too — remember to bolt your doors and windows. It would be a good idea to put a bowl behind the door. There should still be some beet soup left over from this morning — pour the soup into the bowl. If someone breaks in, they’ll almost certainly knock the bowl over and step in the red broth, and that kind of stain is very hard to wash out. It would serve as physical evidence.”
Su Man’s eyes lit up at once when she heard this. She truly couldn’t resist this sort of thing — she supposed it was because she lacked it herself, so whenever she saw this kind of brilliant “spark of wisdom” in someone else, she was completely helpless against it.
“That’s a brilliant idea! I’ll go to the kitchen right now — I’ll put a bowl in all our rooms tonight!” Su Man said with great enthusiasm.
Bai Youwei laughed at that and deliberately teased her. “Then you’d better hurry — that soup from this morning was mostly drunk up by the bald fatty. Who knows if what’s left will even fill a few bowls~”
“Oh no…” Su Man’s footsteps faltered, and disappointment showed on her face.
Lu Yuwen from the bed said, “Ink would work too. As long as it leaves shoe prints when stepped on, no one could deny it.”
Su Man’s hope rekindled at once. “Perfect! I’ll go check the kitchen for soup first, then ask the front desk for some ink.”
With that, she turned and hurried off.
Bai Youwei thought for a moment, then stepped out of the room as well and called toward the staircase: “Inspector — Inspector — which room am I in?!”
In this game, the Inspector existed within the game scenario in the role of the inn’s owner and rarely appeared.
After calling from upstairs, Bai Youwei went downstairs to call again.
