Shi Fa Ke rubbed her forehead with a headache, urging Lu Chi to hurry up and leave. Lu Chi cracked his whip, and his previously gloomy expression suddenly became as refreshed as a spring breeze.
Although they had escaped Jiao Jiao’s entanglement, the number of people walking alongside them on the road did not decrease. Shi Fa Ke gradually developed another headache – with so many people around, how could she and Third Brother carry out their plan?
“In ancient times, there was the saying ‘looked to death like Wei Jie,’ and today I’ve truly opened my eyes. The ancients did not deceive me.” With a touch of resentment, Shi Fa Ke sighed.
Lu Chi couldn’t help but laugh.
“You’re happy?” Shi Fa Ke said gloomily.
“You’re praising me for being good-looking, of course I’m happy.” Lu Chi replied, looking quite pleased with himself.
Shi Fa Ke was immediately speechless.
No! I wasn’t praising you at all!
They arrived at the flower field Shi Fa Ke had mentioned in a lively procession, and then Shi Fa Ke was somewhat dumbfounded… The flower field was more bustling than she had imagined, and it seemed quite difficult to cause trouble here.
The untended flower field was lush and verdant, with abundant grass and trees, and various colorful flowers dotted throughout, creating a unique beautiful scenery. Many people had come here for spring outings – so many that it had almost formed a bustling market, with vendors selling paper kites, snacks… and even straw hats.
As Shi Fa Ke looked around, she became somewhat discouraged. Originally, she had wanted to find a secluded place where Third Brother could find two people to block their path and test Lu Chi, but now in such a setting, looking at all those young ladies and young wives eyeing Lu Chi like tigers… she felt that if Third Brother’s people rashly came to cause trouble, their fate would be uncertain.
Shi Fa Ke stood there blankly, looking up at the various colored paper kites in the sky, her mood somewhat complex for a moment.
“Little matchmaker, what are you looking at?” Suddenly, a voice sounded near her ear.
Shi Fa Ke was startled and turned to see Jiao Jiao, who had somehow appeared beside her.
“Madam Duan.” Shi Fa Ke looked at her somewhat helplessly, “You scared me.”
“What’s there to be afraid of? If you don’t do anything wrong in life, you won’t fear ghosts knocking at your door at midnight.” Jiao Jiao said with a grin, winking at her, “Little matchmaker, where did you find such a beautiful young gentleman? It seems you’ve been keeping the best one hidden away for yourself.”
“Stop talking nonsense.” Shi Fa Ke glared at her.
“Oh my, why are you being so proper with me? Come, come, tell your sister, share some experience.” Jiao Jiao wasn’t afraid of her at all, still wearing that grinning expression.
Shi Fa Ke looked at her with a slight headache. She had seen Jiao Jiao when she was still a maiden, and although she had a fiery temperament then, she was definitely not the shameless person standing before her now. Ever since she became Madam Duan and then became a widow, it seemed she had completely let herself go…
“I can see this young gentleman is truly excellent. When he saw you standing there blankly looking at the paper kites in the sky, he immediately rushed to buy one. It’s clear he truly holds you dear in his heart. Listen to your sister’s advice – such a man is worth marrying! Moreover… he’s so handsome that just looking at him daily would make you eat half a bowl more rice.” Jiao Jiao chattered on, and as she spoke, she seemed to stomp her feet with some unwillingness, “It’s only because you, little matchmaker, have taken a fancy to this man. If not for that, I would have made my move long ago.”
“What are you rambling about…” Shi Fa Ke found her words increasingly strange, and just as she was about to correct her inexplicable thoughts, she saw Lu Chi walking over with a smile, carrying a very beautiful paper kite, and couldn’t help but freeze.
“What did I tell you.” Jiao Jiao chuckled triumphantly, “Nothing can escape these eyes of mine.”
Shi Fa Ke stared blankly at Lu Chi walking over with a smile. Even though she knew Jiao Jiao was talking nonsense, for some reason, she felt a moment of panic.
“Little matchmaker.” Jiao Jiao suddenly tugged at her.
“What…” Shi Fa Ke hurriedly looked away from Lu Chi to Jiao Jiao.
“See over there?” Jiao Jiao pointed to the young ladies and young wives in the distance who were eyeing them like tigers, “Every single one of them is staring. Everyone likes handsome men, but they’re all being hypocritical about it. Let me go chase away those eyesores for you. You must remember you owe me a favor – help me find a good man later.” With that, she winked at Shi Fa Ke and walked away with a grin.
Jiao Jiao puffed out her quite impressive chest and walked over, quickly shaming away those young ladies and young wives in just a few moves.
Shi Fa Ke watched with her mouth agape. Clearly, she and Lu Chi had nothing between them… so why did she feel something was off after Jiao Jiao’s words?
“Ah Ke, what are you looking at?” Lu Chi walked over, “What did that Madam Duan say to you?”
“Ah, nothing… nothing at all.”
Lu Chi didn’t press further, but smiled and raised the beautiful paper kite in his hand, “Do you know how to fly paper kites?”
Shi Fa Ke didn’t know whether Lu Chi was aware that his smile could make one’s heart flutter like a startled deer. Not daring to look at him anymore, she reached out and snatched the kite string reel from his hand, “Of course I do. You stand here and don’t move, hold up the paper kite, and when I tell you to let go, then let go.” With that, she began releasing the string while running in the opposite direction.
Lu Chi obediently held up the paper kite, watching her run away with forced composure, his smile deepening. Of course he knew how attractive his smile was.
Beauty traps and such – it didn’t matter if the tactics were old-fashioned, as long as they worked.
“Alright, let go!” Shi Fa Ke shouted to him from a distance.
Lu Chi smiled slightly and released the paper kite in his hand.
Shi Fa Ke immediately started running, looking back as she ran, and saw that the paper kite had already taken flight. She tugged at the string reel in her hand as the paper kite flew higher and higher, becoming delighted, “Young Master Lu, look…”
“Mm, look at what?” A low voice sounded near her ear, so close that she could feel his breath on her ear.
Shi Fa Ke was startled and immediately loosened her grip on the string reel. Seeing the paper kite swaying and about to fall, Lu Chi quickly grasped her hand, helping to steady the kite in the sky.
After a flurry of activity, they finally stabilized the paper kite. Only then did Shi Fa Ke realize she was practically leaning against Lu Chi’s chest. This position was highly improper, so she quickly stuffed the kite string reel into his hands and took a step back, putting some distance between them.
“What’s wrong?” Lu Chi looked at her with confusion.
What’s wrong?!
Shi Fa Ke twitched the corner of her mouth, “Men and women should not have physical contact, Young Master Lu.”
“Ah, sorry, I was presumptuous with the young lady.” Lu Chi acted as if he had just realized.
Seeing his expression of sudden awareness, Shi Fa Ke felt as if she had been making a mountain out of a molehill, “Young Master Lu needn’t be too concerned…”
“Look, our paper kite is the highest.” Lu Chi suddenly pointed at the kite.
Shi Fa Ke’s attention was immediately drawn away completely. Looking up, indeed, their paper kite was soaring high above all the other kites.
“Young Master Lu, you really are full of hidden talents.” Shi Fa Ke said suddenly.
Lu Chi’s heart skipped a beat slightly, “Hmm?”
“I had no idea you were also a master at flying paper kites!”
“…” Lu Chi quietly wiped away some sweat, then couldn’t help but find it amusing. He looked at Shi Fa Ke with a smile. She was looking up at the paper kite in the sky, her eyes bright and sparkling, her crystal-clear and round little face seeming to glow among the sunlight and flowers.
So adorable.
