Chapter 1263: Those Who Understand Their Opponents Best

October 22nd, Monday.

Eric and Zhao Xuming had arrived in Jingzhou last Wednesday, and in the blink of an eye, three workdays had passed.

Today marked the first week of Eric and Zhao Xuming taking over GOG operations.

The entire handover process had been much faster than either of them had imagined, even giving them the illusion that Min Jingchao had left before they were fully prepared.

In a typical company like Longyu Group, the handover of such an important position would take at least one or two months, wouldn’t it?

At the very minimum, two to three weeks would be necessary, right?

It’s worth noting that GOG was currently Tenda’s most profitable project with the largest player base. After eventually defeating IOI, it had every chance of becoming the game with the largest global player count, bar none.

Currently, the combined player count of GOG and IOI had already achieved this goal. Once IOI collapsed, the vast majority of its players would be absorbed by GOG.

For such a critical project, how could Mr. Pei handle the handover so casually?

Last week, three days were used for the handover, with the entire process arranged a bit too compactly, focusing on the following key points:

Splitting GOG’s operations, with domestic and international portions assigned to Zhao Xuming and Eric respectively;

Introducing the daily operational work and principles for handling special situations;

Introducing the key personnel in the project and their primary responsibilities to facilitate future task assignments and work coordination;

Introducing external connections, mainly Zhang Yuan and the e-sports department’s work content and corresponding core business leaders, to facilitate future linkage and cooperation;

Finalizing the relocation plan for the entire GOG department—all GOG-related development and operations personnel would move to a new floor, and after the future Tenda headquarters building was completed, there would be a dedicated area.

As for the workstations vacated after the move, except for Min Jingchao’s position, which would be preserved as a “cenotaph” like those of other departmental leaders, all would be transferred to Tenda’s game development department for new recruits.

So many arrangements in just three short days left Eric and Zhao Xuming feeling somewhat bewildered.

They could only follow Min Jingchao, frantically taking notes, barely grasping the current operational model of the entire GOG project team. As for mastering these tasks… that was impossible.

Who could become proficient in such a short time?!

Eric and Zhao Xuming were both a bit anxious and wanted Min Jingchao to teach them for a few more days, but Mr. Pei was pushing urgently from his end.

This was inevitable, as Pei Qian didn’t want Min Jingchao to explain too much to these two…

If these two were to perfectly replicate Min Jingchao’s work model 1:1, what would be the point of Pei Qian going to such great lengths to poach them?

In any case, Min Jingchao quickly explained all the work within these three days, completed the handover, and then left.

Eric and Zhao Xuming were left sitting at their workstations, continuing to feel bewildered, experiencing firsthand what “Tenda speed” meant.

Now, the two were sitting at their workstations, having just arranged the workspace relocation matter.

This weekend, all GOG-related development and operations personnel would move to the 22nd floor of the Shenhua Luxury View Building. Considering potential future expansion, the 23rd floor had also been reserved in advance.

Given Tenda’s current expansion rate, renting one more or one less floor made little difference when securing workspaces. Paying an extra month’s rent didn’t matter either, as it wouldn’t be long before they’d hire enough people to fill it.

Having settled the workspace relocation, Eric and Zhao Xuming finally found an opportunity to sit down together and discuss their work.

Zhao Xuming remarked with feeling: “The differences in work processes are just too great!”

“On GOG’s side, it’s completely a one-man show by the person in charge. Many tasks are simply initiated by Min Jingchao having an idea—no need for meetings to validate it, no need for experimental exploration, and often no need to report to Mr. Pei. He just directly arranges for it to be done!”

“The key is that Mr. Pei seems completely unconcerned, only occasionally coming over to give some guidance, and even then, it’s just requesting a special event.”

“Isn’t this a bit like a small work… uh, I mean, too efficient?”

Zhao Xuming had initially wanted to say “small workshop,” but on second thought, that didn’t seem right. Although it did feel quite like a small workshop operation, he had been thoroughly beaten by this “small workshop” model for the past year, which made it embarrassing to admit.

Tenda Group’s work model formed a stark contrast to what he had experienced at Longyu Group.

Over there, if they wanted to run an operational event, they first had to report the proposal to upper management, then communicate with the development team. For games like IOI that were licensed from foreign companies, they also needed cross-border communication.

Each level would offer various opinions, and the entire proposal would be revised at least three or four times, with the possibility of being outright rejected by the parent company in the end.

Since many operational events required developing functions within the game, and Longyu Group couldn’t modify the client at will, they needed prior permission from the parent company.

This back-and-forth made launching a new event extremely laborious, with more than half the time spent navigating various processes.

But GOG was different—whatever event they wanted to run, the person in charge could approve it and it would happen!

Previously, Zhao Xuming had thought that the department heads at Tenda were all puppets controlled by Mr. Pei, doing whatever he told them to do.

But now it seemed that wasn’t the case at all!

When Mr. Pei had requirements, they indeed acted as his puppets, but this situation wasn’t actually common in daily work. Sometimes Mr. Pei would make two or three requests in a month, and sometimes there would be no requests for nearly half a year.

During times without specific requests, the person in charge completely operated as they saw fit!

Some activities targeting IOI weren’t Mr. Pei’s ideas at all, but entirely Min Jingchao’s own thinking.

Of course, both models had their pros and cons.

The Longyu Group model, although highly inefficient, had the major advantage of being less prone to fatal errors, and when problems did occur, no one needed to take the blame since everything had been subject to layer upon layer of review.

In other words, the goal wasn’t to do things in the best way possible, but to do them in the least bad way.

However, with Tenda’s model, once a problem occurred, it became a major issue, with the person in charge taking full responsibility.

This meant that the courage required was much greater than at Longyu Group.

The biggest benefit of this model was its high efficiency, and plans wouldn’t be randomly altered!

As long as the person in charge believed something needed to be done, they could quickly focus the entire department’s efforts to achieve the best results.

Zhao Xuming couldn’t help but sigh, understanding why IOI was always thoroughly beaten when competing with GOG on activities.

In martial arts, nothing defeats speed!

While Longyu Group’s IOI was still going through procedures, GOG’s events were already prepared, waiting at ease for the enemy’s approach. The efficiency and speed were simply on different levels!

Eric nodded: “Indeed, Tenda’s structure maximizes the individual capabilities of those in charge, and often produces remarkable effects when dealing with companies suffering from ‘big company disease.'”

“Currently, GOG and IOI are in direct confrontation, and it’s no wonder this structure proves unstoppable.”

Zhao Xuming complained: “The reasoning makes sense, but shouldn’t that mean we should be given more handover time?”

“The person in charge shoulders such heavy responsibility, yet the handover was completed in just three days. Aren’t they setting us up to fail?”

As someone habitually inclined to deflect blame and naturally cautious, Zhao Xuming keenly felt the weight on his shoulders.

A big black pot seemed to be suspended above his head, ready to drop down at any moment and completely cover him.

This made him feel extremely vulnerable.

Eric shook his head: “I actually think Mr. Pei didn’t mean it that way with this arrangement.”

Zhao Xuming was taken aback: “Oh? Then what did he mean?”

Eric remarked thoughtfully: “Looking at an opponent’s actions from a different angle often reveals more.”

When he first became the person in charge of IOI, he hadn’t yet partnered with Zhao Xuming and fought against Tenda alone, quickly getting thoroughly thrashed.

Later, he began to consciously study Tenda as a unique company and research Mr. Pei’s business strategies.

Gradually, he gained some insights.

But no matter how hard he studied, he was ultimately looking from the outside, and there was much he couldn’t see.

So although he had grasped some information, it was still incomplete, and many times he would draw conclusions that seemed right but weren’t quite accurate.

Now that he had entered Tenda and truly encountered its core structure, Eric suddenly understood many principles he hadn’t previously figured out.

Eric continued: “I’ve been wondering, why exactly did Mr. Pei want to poach us? And he seems willing to pay a certain price for it.”

“This appears slightly unreasonable, because GOG has been winning all along, and Min Jingchao as the person in charge has arranged everything in perfect order. What’s the point of replacing him with us two defeated generals and splitting his work?”

“It can’t be because he doesn’t like him, right?”

“What boss wouldn’t like an employee who doesn’t cause many problems, performs their basic duties perfectly, and shows strong initiative?”

“Now, I think I understand.”

“On one hand, it’s because Tenda’s leaders receive training and then quickly rotate to more important areas to pioneer new territories, and Min Jingchao has basically reached Mr. Pei’s requirements;”

“On the other hand, it’s because after GOG reaches a certain stage of development, the two of us together can play a greater role than Min Jingchao. We have our own advantages.”

Zhao Xuming nodded in sudden understanding: “Hmm… indeed, that should be the only possibility.”

To poach him, Mr. Pei had even offered a game idea, which was enough to indicate that he possessed qualities that Mr. Pei valued.

Zhao Xuming just hadn’t figured out what those qualities were yet.

Eric continued: “In terms of game design, we’re certainly far inferior to Min Jingchao, but fortunately, we don’t need to worry about GOG’s version updates. There will naturally be designers from the original project team promoted to continue being responsible for new versions and new heroes.”

“So our advantage must be in game operations!”
