After some time, the protagonist woke up again.
He found himself still in the same room, with the mutated monster’s corpse lying nearby.
But his health condition had greatly improved, and the fever symptoms from the virus infection had disappeared.
A little girl was hiding behind an abandoned counter, curiously yet cautiously staring at him.
The protagonist tried to greet the little girl in various languages and discovered that she seemed to understand Chinese but couldn’t respond.
She pointed to her mouth and then waved her hand.
“Oh, she can’t speak… Is this a story character?” Chen Sha was curious.
The story continued.
The protagonist stood up, approached the little girl in a friendly manner, tried to chat with her, and discovered that it was the little girl who had saved him.
The little girl showed the protagonist a special syringe, which was probably a special instrument developed by the base’s researchers, capable of drawing blood and injecting it.
The protagonist roughly understood that this little girl’s blood had cured his infected virus, which was why he hadn’t turned into a zombie!
The little girl led the protagonist to a nearby laboratory.
It was a mess, seemingly having experienced intense conflict. A pungent smell permeated the air, and the protagonist dared to enter only after putting on a gas mask taken from a nearby soldier’s corpse.
From the remaining documents and the state of the scene, the protagonist deduced what had happened.
This little girl carried antibodies to the virus; her blood was the antidote to the virus.
After the virus broke out in the base, a mercenary squad was ordered to come and take the little girl away to transfer her.
However, during the process, they were attacked by zombies. In the fierce battle, the mercenary squad released a special gas to kill the zombies, but there were too many zombies, and the entire squad was still wiped out.
Yet the original zombies and the squad members who turned into zombies also couldn’t survive, dying from the poison gas.
With the equipment damaged and failing, the little girl escaped.
She had antibodies and could be unaffected by biochemical viruses and biochemical gas, and her blood could also cure the infected.
However, drawing blood required special blood drawing equipment, which was the special syringe the little girl had earlier, and it would be unusable after one use.
So, the protagonist, accompanied by the little girl, continued to look for the exit of this base.
In this process, Chen Sha began to face more challenges.
The map started to become more complex, sometimes requiring simple puzzle-solving to proceed.
The difficulty of monsters continuously increased; among the zombies appeared some with mutation abilities, such as extremely fast speed, extra-thick health, or the ability to become semi-transparent; the mercenaries’ weapons became increasingly sophisticated, and their numbers grew.
Besides fighting these enemies, Chen Sha also had to collect many resources on the map, budgeting carefully to avoid running out of ammunition.
Apart from scavenging for ammunition and medical supplies, the protagonist also had to collect syringes.
The little girl’s blood couldn’t help the protagonist become permanently immune to the zombie virus. When the protagonist was bitten by zombies again, he would be infected with the virus again and still need the little girl’s blood transfusion.
Without syringes, the little girl couldn’t give blood to the protagonist.
Moreover, the little girl’s usefulness wasn’t limited to just these aspects.
Although she had no combat ability, she could help in many ways.
For instance, because the little girl was small in stature, agile in movement, and immune to poison gas and viruses, some specific puzzle levels required cooperation between the protagonist and the little girl to pass.
The little girl’s blood had the effect of removing infection status and restoring health.
In non-combat states, the little girl would help the player find some collectible items hidden in the scene.
The little girl had an instinctive perception of nearby zombies; if, while walking, the little girl suddenly found a place to hide, it meant that combat was about to erupt…
During combat, Chen Sha felt that his emotions were also affected by this little girl.
Cooperating with the little girl to solve a mechanism would make him feel very proud.
Seeing the little girl surrounded by zombies would make him very anxious, wishing he could rush over immediately.
Seeing the little girl become dispirited due to blood drawing would make him very distressed, cursing himself for being so stupid, thinking how good it would be if he hadn’t been injured in combat…
…
Before he knew it, Chen Sha was addicted.
Strictly speaking, in various aspects of “Sea Fortress,” whether it was the quality of the game (including visuals, models, actions, details, etc.) or the richness of the story, there was still a significant gap compared to some foreign AAA productions.
But Chen Sha was still addicted because he sensed the difference between this game and foreign AAA productions.
The protagonist’s identity as a Chinese person, a Chinese special forces soldier who infiltrated a multinational organization’s secret base to investigate the truth, although he knew multiple languages, he often spoke to himself in Chinese during rest times, or spoke to the little girl in Chinese, giving Chen Sha a strong sense of immersion!
A protagonist who was Chinese was inherently very likable.
Moreover, to be fair, for this game as a domestic product to achieve such an excellent level in its story mode was itself an incredibly remarkable thing!
It’s worth noting that story mode was something that even games like “Counter-Strike” and “Bullet Hole” didn’t dare to touch!
The story mode of “Sea Fortress” might be slightly lacking compared to some super-classic foreign AAA productions (after all, conditions were limited), but it wasn’t far off.
If compared to domestic games, it was an exceptional performance, absolutely top-notch!
What was rare was that although the story mode of “Sea Fortress” wasn’t complex, it was small but complete!
The level design was reasonable, the types of monsters and firearms were diverse, and the level difficulty was appropriately set.
The most brilliant point was the design of this little girl, which could be said to have completely brought the entire story mode to life!
Without this little girl, it couldn’t be called a story mode at all, at most it would be an “endless mode,” just going through levels, shooting zombies, shooting mercenaries, where’s the story in that?
But with the addition of this little girl, the story mode seemed to have been completely revitalized!
The originally dull shooting suddenly seemed to have a soul, because players invested real emotions into it!
A game that can evoke resonance in players can truly be considered as having a “story”!
In the final part of the game, after going through countless hardships, the protagonist finally fought his way to the top of the sea fortress, defeated the final mutated monster boss, and climbed onto the escape plane.
On the helicopter, the protagonist pressed the detonation button, and the entire sea fortress rose in a huge mushroom cloud. The ugly virus experiments, terrifying mutated monsters, profit-driven multinational organization executives, and mercenaries… all were buried at the bottom of the sea.
The protagonist flew the plane, and the camera focused on the little girl in the cabin.
She had already fallen asleep quietly, with the protagonist’s coat covering her.
In the afterglow of the sunset, on the sea surface rippling from the explosion, the protagonist flew away with the little girl, and the story mode ended.
Credits appeared on the screen, and what surprised Chen Sha was that the production team was surprisingly small, with only about sixty people in total!
Among them, Tenda’s development personnel numbered only about twenty, and the rest were personnel from various outsourcing companies, including those who made models, customized functions, provided voice acting, music, and sound effects…
But even so, Chen Sha was still shocked; he hadn’t expected that just this small number of people could create such an unforgettable story!
In retrospect, the entire story mode hadn’t invested too many resources, and the only memorable character was just this little girl.
But the story mode of “Sea Fortress” was still impressive, which precisely demonstrated the designer’s excellent skill!
Chen Sha was shocked and couldn’t come to his senses for a long time.
He had thought that this company developing a story mode was a joke, but who knew they had this kind of ability!!
