Chapter 10 – Trash

The two of them turned back sharply.

Well, here comes Baldy again.

Upon seeing them, Baldy’s thoughts immediately returned to the disruption during that evening self-study. His face turned red then pale, his eyes glaring with an expression that screamed, “No! This is not the evidence I wanted!”

Lu Xingyan found it amusing, his hands in his pockets, tilting his head in mockery. “Teacher, this is the Girls’ Festival gift prepared by our class. Confiscating this, are you planning to use it as shoe insoles?”

Baldy’s face kept changing colors, his eyes filled with a clear message: “No! This is not the evidence I wanted!”

Lu Xingyan was particularly sarcastic, even gesturing with his eyes toward the direction of the other class. “You should go to our class and confiscate them. You could collect dozens of these, and you’d have a year’s worth of shoe insoles.”

At this moment, Class One wasn’t like the other classes, quietly reading during the morning self-study. They were loud and unruly, even the class representative couldn’t control them.

When the girls received roses, they thought the boys in their class were considerate. But when they opened the gift box, they found the boys shameless! The Girls’ Festival gift turned out to be sanitary pads!

Baldy, feeling uneasy, finally found a reason to confront them as they behaved so carefree during the morning self-study. He stood at the doorway, his hands behind his back, and publicly humiliated Class One.

Wang Youfu heard the commotion and came over. Baldy complained to Wang Youfu and also told him about the incident with the Rubik’s Cube during the evening self-study.

Someone below whispered, “Teacher Xu said if he could solve six sides, he wouldn’t say anything. Shen Xingruo solved six sides in one minute.”

This was followed by laughter from some students. Some of the bold boys joined in, “That’s right, Teacher Xu said it himself.”

As colleagues, Wang Youfu knew Baldy’s temperament, but he had to give him face as he was still a teacher. “I’ve said it many times, don’t discuss irrelevant matters during morning self-study. A year’s plan starts with spring, and a day’s plan starts with the morning. On this spring morning, why aren’t you all studying?”

Wang Youfu spoke slowly, like reciting scriptures, for half a minute before saying something that seemed harmless but also seemed pointless.

Wang Youfu was known in the school for protecting his students. If his students misbehaved, he would discipline them himself. He had been the head teacher of the liberal arts class for five years. He usually appeared as calm as the Buddha, but once he got worked up, he even smashed a cup in the grade office.

Baldy didn’t expect him to reprimand Class One in front of him. Instead, he focused on Lu Xingyan and Shen Xingruo to find fault.

Giving Baldy some face, Wang Youfu cleared his throat, pretending to be serious as he turned to Lu Xingyan and Shen Xingruo. “Lu Xingyan, Shen Xingruo, how could you two play with a Rubik’s Cube during evening self-study? Although a Rubik’s Cube is a good thing for intelligence and hand-eye coordination, you should only play with it after class.”

He continued, “And Lu Xingyan, why did you wait until after Teacher Xu opened it to tell him what it was? You should have said it earlier to avoid misunderstanding.”

Lu Xingyan readily agreed, nodding. Then, he turned to Baldy, “Sorry, Teacher Xu. I didn’t know it was sanitary pads inside. I should have checked the gift on the way. Then, I could have warned you before you opened it.”

Lu Xingyan bowed deeply after speaking.

Suddenly, the class burst into laughter.

Baldy was so enraged by Lu Xingyan’s repeated mention of sanitary pads that he looked like he was about to ascend to heaven in fury. With a disdainful snort at Wang Youfu, he turned on his heel and stormed upstairs.

The students in the class were still laughing.

Wang Youfu glanced at Lu Xingyan and Shen Xingruo, didn’t say anything, and walked towards the platform.

Suddenly, there was a loud “bang”! Wang Youfu’s red thermos, which he always carried, slammed heavily onto the platform.

“Take a good look at yourselves! What do you look like!”

Wang Youfu’s expression was no longer gentle. He began to reprimand the class with a voice that reverberated throughout the teaching building!

Shen Xingruo had never seen Wang Youfu like this before.

The students of Class One might not have seen this for the first time, but at that moment, they all stopped laughing and sat up straight, as quietly as steamed chickens.

“This high school has 25 classes, 9 liberal arts classes, and 3 liberal arts experimental classes! When you were placed in the experimental class, your level should have been among the top! But now! You’re consistently ranking at the bottom! You still have the nerve to joke around during morning self-study! If you don’t feel ashamed, I do!”

“I know high school is tough, and I’ve never set overly high expectations for your academic performance. If you don’t do well, it’s a matter of ability! But not studying properly is an attitude problem!”

“Look at yourselves now, where’s even a bit of the atmosphere of an experimental class? What are you calling an experimental class for? Your average score at the end of last semester was only one point higher than Class Four! Class Four is just an ordinary class! With results like these, do you have the face to joke around with teachers? With results like these, what kind of grades can you achieve in the college entrance exam and what kind of university can you get into!”

Every question from Wang Youfu seemed to strike at the souls of the students in Class One, and the classroom was silent.

After lecturing the whole class, Wang Youfu shifted his attention to Lu Xingyan and Shen Xingruo at the door:

“And you two!”

“Lu Xingyan, you have some reasoning for playing with the Rubik’s Cube during evening self-study! You’re always so nonchalant! You need to rein in your arrogance! I’m your class teacher, not your parent. I won’t tolerate your bad temper!”

“Shen Xingruo! You’re a top student from Huize No. 1 Middle School, and you usually perform well. I know this has nothing to do with you!”

“?”

“But why did I arrange for you to sit with Lu Xingyan? It’s because I hoped you would set an example for him! If you don’t set an example for him and instead join him in defying the teacher, is that what a good student should do!”

“Teacher, that’s not what you said in the office…”

Shen Xingruo remembered Wang Youfu’s self-satisfaction in the office when discussing seating arrangements, feeling a bit detached from the situation. On the other hand, Lu Xingyan stood unusually upright, quietly listening to Wang Youfu’s scolding, with none of his usual unruly demeanor. Perhaps Wang Youfu’s scolding towards Shen Xingruo felt a bit insincere, as he passed it off in his mind. He lost the momentum to continue scolding, so he ended with, “Both of you, stand outside and attend morning self-study!” Then he stormed off in frustration.

This was the first time Shen Xingruo had been punished with standing from kindergarten to high school. She didn’t feel the typical humiliation and indignation of a good student suddenly being scolded and feeling utterly embarrassed. Instead, she just regretted not having eaten breakfast to fill her stomach this early in the morning. She couldn’t stand for long, especially on an empty stomach in the morning. During military training in her first year of high school, she once fainted from standing at attention without having breakfast to sleep in a few more minutes.

Seeing her pale complexion, Lu Xingyan quickly speculated on many emotions for her. Glancing at her, he asked, “Hey, are you okay?”

“Not really.”

What kind of trick was this? Normally, wouldn’t she stubbornly nod along and pretend to be strong?

Before Lu Xingyan could react, Shen Xingruo squatted down on her own.

Seeing her squatting, hugging her knees, and burying her head, Lu Xingyan thought she was crying.

…This had nothing to do with her, having been a top student for over ten years, suddenly being punished by a teacher. Naturally, she felt both wronged and embarrassed.

Come to think of it, it was all because of him that Shen Xingruo suffered.

Thinking of this, Lu Xingyan felt a bit uneasy.

Looking around and seeing no one, he covered his mouth, cleared his throat, and then casually picked up the book in his hand, patting Shen Xingruo’s shoulder. “Hey, don’t cry.”

Seeing no response from Shen Xingruo, he stood there for three seconds, then squatted down as well, pretending to be casual. “This time you were unfairly targeted. Everyone in the class knows that, so you don’t have to feel embarrassed.”

Still no response.

“If anyone talks about it, I’ll tell them to shut up. Will that be enough?”

Finally, Shen Xingruo spoke up, “…you should shut up first.”

Lu Xingyan: “…”

Shen Xingruo took a moment to squat and relax, feeling much better. She stood up and continued reading her book. Lu Xingyan didn’t say anything more, but he had already figured out that she was just saving face while feeling miserable.

Not only Lu Xingyan, but most of the students in the class also thought so. After the punishment ended, girls who usually talked to Shen Xingruo came forward to comfort her. Even some boys came over to comfort her, and there were playful ones like Li Chengfan who tried to cheer her up. In short, no one believed that she looked bad just because she was uncomfortable standing there.

After this incident, Lu Xingyan felt like he owed Shen Xingruo something. It wasn’t right to act as if they should never interact again. Actually, other than throwing a basketball at him and joking about burning incense for him, Shen Xingruo hadn’t done anything to provoke him.

At first, Lu Xingyan found Shen Xingruo annoying because he felt she was fake, showing different faces in front of different people. Moreover, he wasn’t in a good mood due to the situation with Chen Zhu, and the sudden intrusion of strangers at home, like a mirror reflecting his lack of diligence, intensified his displeasure. However, now it seemed that the first reason was a bit forced. Shen Xingruo was friendly to most people, but she was equally arrogant towards those who provoked her, just like a Bai Peacock brand retort machine, ready to challenge anyone who dared to cross her. As a somewhat unsuccessful provocateur, Lu Xingyan’s opinion of Shen Xingruo had changed slightly, but a 180-degree attitude shift toward her was still difficult.

Shen Xingruo noticed that lately, Lu Xingyan seemed much friendlier. After some thought, she realized it was probably because they had shared the experience of being punished together, creating a sort of camaraderie through punishment. She and Lu Xingyan didn’t have any deep-seated grudges, and since she lived in the Lu family’s house, it was best if they could get along peacefully. So, she reluctantly accepted the goodwill that Lu Xingyan had been forcing on her recently. Their relationship at the desk wasn’t exactly back to tropical paradise from Antarctica, but at least it had returned to temperate conditions.

It was Thursday. When leaving in the morning, Zhai Jiajing remembered something and discussed it with Shen Xingruo, “Xingruo, I’m on cleaning duty today, but I have to attend the school’s class cadres meeting. Can I switch with you for a day?”

Without hesitation, Shen Xingruo agreed. Doing cleaning duty on Thursday was better for her and Lu Xingyan, so Uncle Liu wouldn’t have to wait outside for too long.

When they entered the classroom, she asked the boy who was originally scheduled for cleaning duty on Thursday if he would be willing to switch. The boy eagerly nodded, almost taking on today’s cleaning as well.

When Lu Xingyan arrived in the classroom, she informed him as well. Lu Xingyan, who had probably engaged in some nocturnal activities and couldn’t even open his eyes, exuded an aura of exhaustion.

Listening to her, he lazily replied with two “mm” sounds.

Shen Xingruo repeated, “Did you hear me?”

He lay his head on the desk, his voice lethargic, “Cleaning duty, got it.”

On Thursday, the final class was Political Science, and Wang Youfu went through a set of simulated test questions from the exercise book.

At the end of class, Ruan Wen collected the exercise books, probably to check if everyone had taken thorough notes during the lesson. Shen Xingruo helped Ruan Wen collect the exercise books. When she returned, except for a few girls who were skipping dinner to lose weight, the classroom was empty. Lu Xingyan and the basketball under his desk were also nowhere to be seen. Shen Xingruo stood by her seat for a moment with little expression, then grabbed a broom and began sweeping the floor.

In the evening, the lingering sunlight painted streaks of golden hues across the sky. At the midfield of the basketball court, Lu Xingyan emerged sweaty, wiping his forehead with the hem of his shirt as he walked toward the sidelines. A junior schoolgirl had been waiting for a while and, blushing, she offered him some water as he approached. His chest rose and fell with exertion, but his face showed little emotion as he coldly refused, “No need.” Xu Chengzhou, accustomed to this scenario, shrugged and tossed Lu Xingyan a bottle of mineral water he had brought himself, then opened one for himself. “What’s wrong, Master Lu? Not feeling it today?”

Lu Xingyan casually replied, “I don’t know, just have this feeling like I forgot something, but I can’t remember what.”

“You and your goldfish memory—”

The bottle of mineral water was thrown directly at him, “You’re the one with the goldfish memory.”

Mid-conversation, Lu Xingyan glanced casually and suddenly noticed a girl not far away, carrying a black garbage bag, her back straight as she walked directly towards the basketball court. Shen Xingru?

Lu Xingyan paused for a moment, straightening up against the steps. Shen Xingruo approached, stopping in front of him. Without a word, her expression indifferent, she overturned the garbage bag in front of Lu Xingyan, spreading its contents evenly across the court, nearly half of it.

“Garbage from Blocks Three and Four and the podium. Sweep it up.”

Chapter 9 – Rose

Whether it was Shen Xingruo’s lightning-fast solving skills that stunned Baldy Strong or his commitment to not saying anything, Baldy Strong remained silent for a long while.

Coincidentally, the bell signaling the end of the first evening self-study period rang, and Shen Xingruo politely nodded. “Teacher, if there’s nothing else, I’ll go to the restroom first.”

With that, she bypassed Baldy Strong and walked straight out.

Baldy Strong stood there, unable to find the right words to regain control of the situation.

Once Baldy Strong left, the previously quiet class erupted:

“Damn, Shen Xingruo is so awesome!”

“Am I seeing things, or did Shen Xingruo just publicly embarrass Baldy Strong?!”

“Oh my god! She’s so bold. I thought she was just a soft-spoken girl, didn’t expect…”

“A four-layer Rubik’s Cube, and she solved it in just over a minute… What kind of brain and hand speed is that?!”

Lu Xingyan stared at the Rubik’s Cube, somewhat lost in thought.

As he continued to stare, his gaze even showed a rare hint of interest.

Evening self-study ended.

On their way back to the dorms, Shi Qin clung to Shen Xingruo, not letting go. “Wuwuwu, Xingruo, I declare you my goddess! Oh my god! Did you see Baldy Strong’s bewildered face, and how he couldn’t recover as you confidently walked away? I don’t know why, but I found it so satisfying!”

However, Zhai Jiajing seemed a bit worried. She looked at Shen Xingruo and said, “Do you think Mr. Xu will come to trouble you tomorrow?”

Before Shen Xingruo could respond, Shi Qin confidently interjected, “What’s there to fear? He said it himself, if you can solve all six sides, he won’t say anything. All of us in the class heard it.”

Zhai Jiajing hesitated to speak further.

Suddenly, laughter erupted from a group of boys behind them. The three of them instinctively turned to look, and it was the boys from their class.

Lu Xingyan was in the middle of the group, and although it was unclear what they were discussing, he wore a rare smile on his face. It was the first time Shen Xingruo had seen him smile. He slightly tilted his head, his delicate fringe falling across his forehead. When he smiled, his lips curved slightly upwards, revealing his white and orderly teeth, seemingly unaffected by smoking. Usually, he seemed a bit distant to everyone, but when he smiled, he appeared gentle, and with his excessively handsome face, he looked like a handsome young man straight out of a comic book.

The boys also noticed the girls. Someone recognized Shen Xingruo and boldly whistled at her, “Goddess, you’re awesome!” Immediately, others joined in, “Goddess, do you want to eat spicy hot pot? I’ll treat you to a twenty-dollar one!” “I’ll treat you to a thirty-dollar one!” “Forget it, it’s not healthy!” Li Chengfan knocked the heads of the two boys and teased Shen Xingruo, “Ruojie, I’ll treat you to Nongfu Spring water, it’s most suitable for a fairy like you who takes care of her health.”

As it was time to return to the dorms, the boys’ shouting attracted quite a few people’s attention. Shi Qin was speechless and shouted at them, “Li Chengfan, Zhao Langming, are you guys annoying or what?!” Li Chengfan laughed, “I didn’t invite you, why are you getting worked up?” He added casually, “Jingjie, I’ll treat you too!” Shi Qin couldn’t stand his cheeky demeanor, with one-third of the mineral water still in her hand. She threw it directly at Li Chengfan — perhaps because her target was too lively, or perhaps because of the darkness of the night, the water bottle drew a magical arc in the air, and then — headed straight for Lu Xingyan’s handsome face.

Uh-oh…

Shi Qin widened her eyes, staring at the mineral water bottle about to make intimate contact with Lu Xingyan’s handsome face, and vaguely felt like she was seeing her own little body lying in the morgue.

A loud “bang”!

Silence fell around them.

…Huh?

Lu Xingyan reached out and caught it. The air fell silent for two seconds before Lu Xingyan tossed the next mineral water bottle back. He threw it lightly, but his aim wasn’t great, and the bottle flew straight into Shen Xingruo’s arms. Beside them, Zhai Jiajing was stunned for two seconds before she pursed her lips.

The collective experience of the evening self-study session didn’t make Lu Xingyan any friendlier. The next day at school, he and Shen Xingruo still maintained their attempts to freeze each other with lowered temperatures.

On Wednesday night, class monitor He Siyue added all the boys in the class to a group chat to discuss gifts for Girls’ Day the day after tomorrow. When Lu Xingyan opened WeChat, the group chat was already buzzing with activity. Some boys suggested buying candles, arranging them in heart shapes under the girls’ dormitory windows, and singing songs to them. They even shared a screenshot of a Taobao page, where a set of candles labeled “Essential for Confession Love Candles” was being sold for 23.8 yuan with free shipping. It seemed like a cheap and practical option, with same-city delivery available by Friday.

Lu Xingyan glanced at the screenshot, which boldly proclaimed “Essential for Confession Love Candles,” and noted that 11,493 idiots had already bought the item in an attempt to find a girlfriend. Fortunately, not many agreed with this idea.

“Too cringe, and it’s not like we’re short on money.”

“Whether we can successfully light the candles downstairs in the dormitory is still a problem. I bet the security guards will show up before we finish arranging them.”

“YeAh and this isn’t practical. I think buying some food would be better.”

Lu Xingyan didn’t bother reading further. As long as it wasn’t something as embarrassing as lighting candles and singing, it was fine by him. When he checked his phone after taking a shower, the group chat seemed to have settled on the gift and had moved on to discussing the delivery method. He didn’t bother scrolling back further, but he did see He Siyue suggesting that since there were exactly 28 boys and 28 girls in the class, they could do one-on-one gift exchanges.

As soon as those words were out, the boys in the class eagerly and frantically flooded the chat, their messages all saying pretty much the same thing:

“I want to give it to Shen Xingruo.”

“I’m giving it to Shen Xingruo!!!”

“Zhao Jiajing!!”

“I’m also giving it to Shen Xingruo.”

“Shen Xingruo is mine!!!”

Lu Xingyan chuckled.

It was like winning an argument in the group meant you could marry that white peacock.

Childish.

Everyone was clamoring, but there was no way they could all give it to one person. So He Siyue suggested drawing lots to decide. Anyone who wanted to exchange could do so later.

He Siyue wrote down the girls’ student numbers on pieces of paper, crumpled them into balls, and then called the boys to come to the dorm to draw lots.

By the time Lu Xingyan and Bian He got there, there weren’t many balls left.

Lu Xingyan grabbed one at random and unfolded it.

Number 56.

“He got 56. Who’s student number 56?”

“56?”

“Oh damn, 56 is Shen Xingruo, right?”

Shen Xingruo was a transfer student, so her student number naturally came last. Looking at the class roster, sure enough, it was Shen Xingruo.

Lu Xingyan didn’t react much.

Li Chengfan put his arm around Lu Xingyan’s shoulder and asked, “Hey, do you want to trade with me? I drew Zhao Jiajing. Anyway, you don’t have a good relationship with Shen Xingruo, so you can trade with me.”

“Who told you I don’t have a good relationship with her?”

“Do I even need to say it? You two act like whoever speaks first will drop dead on the spot. I’m not blind, hurry up and trade with me.”

“Screw you.”

He shrugged off the hand on his shoulder and sauntered back to the dorm.

On Friday, the atmosphere at school for the Girls’ Festival was intense. One of the principles at Mingli School was freedom, so whether it was traditional festivals or Western ones, the school allowed students to celebrate creatively without disrupting the teaching schedule.

Shen Xingruo had just arrived at the school and saw red banners fluttering in the wind. From the bulletin boards to the playground to the walls outside the classrooms, banners were hung everywhere. If you didn’t look closely, you’d think it was the propaganda office brainwashing everyone.

Mingli School was quite different from Huize No. 1 Middle School. When Shen Xingruo was at Huize, she hadn’t even seen a New Year’s Eve party once. Huize also required students to live on campus, but the dorms and cafeteria were inside the school, so unless there were special circumstances, nobody could leave campus. In Huize, the only thing that could slightly relax people was the two days off each month.

Seeing how lively the Girls’ Festival was at Mingli surprised Shen Xingruo a bit.

The boys in Class One also wrote banners for the girls. After all, it was a liberal arts experimental class, and they couldn’t afford to lose face in a situation where words mattered.

“As the lights come on in Shuxiang Road, who captures everyone’s attention? Class One’s beautiful twenty-eight, in the prime of their youth.”

After reciting it, Shi Qin said, “Hey, ours is pretty good! Much stronger than Class Six’s ‘Can’t take you to romantic Turkey, but can send you a Peppa Pig.’ Theirs is too cheesy!”

Zhao Jiajing looked up and down, “It seems like they’re still using the verse style of ‘Yu Meiren’.”

Shi Qin said, “Then it must have been He Siyue and the others who came up with it. The style is too normal, so normal that I can’t believe it’s our class’s boys!”

Shen Xingruo didn’t say anything, but she deeply agreed.

Yesterday, before school ended, the Chinese teacher, Chen Jiao, asked Shen Xingruo for her essay book, saying she wanted to type it up on the computer and print it out to include in the next issue of excellent essays.

After entering the teaching building, Shen Xingruo, Zhao Jiajing, and Shi Qin went their separate ways. They first went to the Chinese department office to get the essay. When they came out of the office, the bell for morning self-study rang.

The corridor was empty, and the sound of morning reading could be heard from the classrooms along the way. Shen Xingruo walked towards Class One. As she passed the entrance of the teaching building, she heard footsteps and subconsciously glanced in that direction.

A tall and thin figure approached, dressed in the black and white school uniform that Mingli students sarcastically referred to as “mourning attire.” It looked surprisingly good on him.

Lu Xingyan.

He had a pink gift box tucked under his arm and a rose in his hand.

Seeing her, he didn’t seem surprised. He raised an eyebrow slightly, then lazily walked towards her against the morning light.

“Hey, Shen Xingruo.”

“This is for you.”

Without much thought, he handed her the items directly, as if just fulfilling a duty.

Shen Xingruo froze, not yet taking them. Suddenly, a roar came from behind her, “What are you doing in broad daylight? Do you even consider this a school!”

The two of them turned back sharply.

Great.

It was Baldy again.

Baldy, upon seeing them, was reminded of the incident during that evening self-study when the scene was disrupted. Instantly, he became furious at the sight of them and launched into a barrage of curses.

His speech was too fast for Shen Xingruo to catch everything, but she vaguely heard phrases like “early romance violates school rules,” “bringing shame to the school,” and “the liberal arts class is useless.”

After he finished talking, he even resorted to violence. Taking advantage of Lu Xingyan’s distraction, he snatched the incriminating evidence from his hands. Not content with just the rose, he also immediately opened the pink gift box, trying to find undeniable evidence like a love letter.

As soon as the pink box was opened, Shen Xingruo saw the familiar “ABC” letters.

Whether Baldy was crazy or what, he didn’t even bother to look at the letters on top before tearing open the ABC packaging.

The next moment, the world fell silent.

Chapter 8 – Rubik’s Cube

In the third row, sixth seat. Lu Xingyan, Shen Xingruo. They were desk mates.

Shen Xingruo stared at the seating chart for thirty seconds, then her gaze shifted to the small print at the bottom: “Note: Seat assignments for this semester will rotate each week, moving one row back and one group to the left.” In other words, it was a fair system, ensuring everyone had a chance to sit in different positions, not just hidden in the back row.

By Monday, the weather was clear, and before seven o’clock, sunlight burst from the horizon, illuminating the sky. The leaves of the camphor trees along the road shimmered with a verdant hue. In early March, Star City finally seemed to embrace the essence of spring.

Shen Xingruo was always adamant about sleeping until the last minute and then rushing to school precisely on time. As for breakfast, she usually grabbed some bread and milk to eat whenever she had a break between classes.

Today, she decided to go out early for breakfast with Shi Qin and Zhai Jiajing because she heard that on Mondays, there was no morning self-study; instead, they had to attend a morning assembly on the playground. Since the assembly lasted half an hour, she needed to eat something beforehand to avoid feeling faint.

From the moment they left, Shi Qin kept complaining, “What karma did I accumulate to end up sitting with her for a whole semester? I’m already sick of seeing her in the dorm every day! Did you see her attitude this morning? It’s unbelievable! She was making phone calls late into the night, and she had the nerve to justify it!”

Shi Qin was complaining about Li Ting. Last night, Li Ting was on the phone in the dorm until one in the morning. Despite Shi Qin reminding her several times to keep it down, Li Ting just said “I know” each time and then lowered her voice. But after a few sentences, she’d raise her voice again. Finally, Shi Qin couldn’t take it anymore and shouted at her, “Li Ting, stop making phone calls!” Li Ting got annoyed and retorted, “I already lowered my voice, didn’t I? When you were up late doing homework, I didn’t say anything! Are you deliberately picking on me?” Shi Qin argued back, “When I was doing homework, I purposely drew the curtains and kept the light away from you. I didn’t make any noise. Can’t you be a little considerate?”

Seeing the tension rising, Zhai Jiajing quickly intervened, trying to mediate between them. Considering the dormitory supervisor, they both backed down, avoiding a late-night altercation.

But this morning, Li Ting got up at six, making a racket in the dorm. When she left, they were still asleep, and her slamming the door woke even the soundest sleeper, Shen Xingruo.

“Li Ting can be a bit stubborn, don’t let it get to you. She’s generally a nice person,” Zhai Jiajing gently advised.

“Is that what you call stubbornness? She’s always so aloof, acting as if we’re mistreating her in our class. She’s so fond of hanging out with the girls from Class Three. Why doesn’t she just apply to transfer to their class? It’s only you two who tolerate her!”

Zhai Jiajing had a good temper; even if Li Ting kept her up at night with her fussing, she wouldn’t argue back. But Shen Xingruo, purely due to sleeping early with earplugs and an eye mask, hadn’t heard any of this commotion.

By the time they reached the most popular noodle shop near the school, the place was packed, and the owner kept adding tables to the front yard.

Shi Qin: “Boss, I’ll have the shredded pork and wood ear mushroom noodles, with a tea egg!”

Zhai Jiajing: “I’ll have the mixed seafood noodles, with a fried egg.”

The owner scooped noodles into bowls and casually asked, “Flat noodles for both, right?”

“Yes.”

It was Shen Xingruo’s first time at this shop. While Shi Qin and Zhai Jiajing were ordering, she was still studying the menu with its red text on a white background.

Once they had finished ordering, she decided, “I’ll have the meatball and steamed egg rice noodles.”

Before she could finish, a voice came from behind, “Boss, meatball and steamed egg, alkaline noodles.”

The owner looked up, “Oh, there’s only one bowl of meatball and steamed egg left. This student ordered first. Handsome, you should choose something else; everything else is still available.”

Shen Xingruo turned around, meeting Lu Xingyan’s gaze.

Lu Xingyan had recognized her silhouette long ago and was leisurely watching her.

Shen Xingruo felt a bit puzzled. Would he give up the meatball and steamed egg just because he was staring like this? Impossible, wishful thinking.

She averted her gaze and returned to her table directly.

Things that were hard to come by always seemed especially delicious. After finishing her meal, Shen Xingruo, rarely offering a compliment, remarked, “The food here is good; I’ll come often in the future.”

Lu Xingyan, seated at the table behind her, settled for a beef noodle soup. He had been enjoying his meal until Shen Xingruo’s comment, suddenly losing his appetite.

Perhaps because of the seating change scheduled for today, everyone arrived exceptionally early, filling the classroom with the sound of chairs and desks being dragged around.

Shen Xingruo and Lu Xingyan sat together, devoid of the usual lively interactions typical of new seatmates. Honestly, what could she discuss with someone who claimed to be pretentious? And what could he discuss with someone who was already planning for their funeral? Which type of pretentiousness was more elegant, and which type of incense was more favored by the underworld? Since they both found each other irritating, why bother looking at each other?

Fortunately, there were still familiar faces around. He Siyue moved to the seat in front of Shen Xingruo, while Li Chengfan moved to the group next to Lu Xingyan, separated by only one aisle.

After the morning assembly, during the English class, Miss Zhou, the English teacher, who preferred an active classroom atmosphere, loved asking questions and encouraging interaction among students.

Halfway through the class, she brought up the topic of “Idol Worship” for everyone to discuss with their seatmates. The classroom instantly became lively with everyone sharing their thoughts. Miss Zhou even walked around to check under the desks. When she reached Shen Xingruo and Lu Xingyan’s side, she noticed that both of them were busy with their notebooks, not engaging in any discussion. So, she asked, “Why aren’t you two discussing?”

Shen Xingruo’s expression conveyed her indifference towards the idea of discussing anything with him. But when she looked up at Miss Zhou, she replied, “We’ve already discussed it.”

Miss Zhou didn’t say much, just glanced at them and continued walking.

However, when the discussion was over, she called on Lu Xingyan to present their discussion points. Shen Xingruo didn’t even bother lifting her head, simply pushing her notebook over to Lu Xingyan’s desk. Since she had initiated the “we’ve discussed it” comment, she felt obligated to provide him with an answer when called upon.

She felt like she had already chewed up the food and spoon-fed it to him; as his seatmate, she had done her duty.

But she never expected that this young master wouldn’t even be able to read.

“We had a he…head… What’s this?”

That’s your problem.

Miss Zhou instinctively glanced at Shen Xingruo.

Shen Xingruo remained composed, met Miss Zhou’s gaze for a moment, and then looked at Lu Xingyan.

Maybe because Shen Xingruo had made such a good impression, Miss Zhou involuntarily inferred from her expression, “I don’t know anything. We had already discussed it; maybe he has amnesia,” which appeared innocent.

So, without picking up the matter further, Miss Zhou simply moved on.

It’s strange, that during these two days of new seating arrangements, Shen Xingruo and Lu Xingyan seemed to have incurred some kind of curse. The frequency with which they were called upon to answer questions in class was outrageously high. Sometimes it was Lu Xingyan and Shen Xingruo, and sometimes they even got called up together for a mixed doubles session.

After finishing her Chinese class, Teacher Zhang Jiao took the opportunity to visit the political science department’s office, hoping to snag some of Wang Youfu’s tea leaves. As she brewed the tea, she suddenly remarked, as if remembering something exciting, “Hey, that girl who transferred to your class, Shen Xingruo, she’s quite beautiful, isn’t she? Sitting next to Lu Xingyan, they’re quite the sight.”

Taking a sip of her tea, she added, “And their names match so well too!”

“Right! When I was arranging the seating, I used that random software, and originally Shen Xingruo was supposed to sit in front of Lu Xingyan. But hey! I thought those two names looked pretty good together, so I made a slight adjustment.”

Wang Youfu held his thermos with a sense of accomplishment. Shen Xingruo happened to be helping her former seatmate, Ruan Wen, move some political science assignments when she reached the door and heard the second half of Wang Youfu’s sentence, leaving her speechless for a moment.

In the evening, as the sun painted the sky with shades of deep and light yellow, and the gentle evening breeze blew, Shen Xingruo, along with Shi Qin and Zhai Jiajing, returned to the classroom for evening self-study.

This Saturday was International Women’s Day, and in recent years, for some unknown reason, there had been a sudden surge in the popularity of another celebration, “Three-Seven Girls’ Day,” followed by variations like Goddess Day and Fairy Day.

Shi Qin excitedly shared various gossip about how the boys from different classes were preparing for Girls’ Day. Shen Xingruo listened with half-interest as they returned to the classroom, taking a short break before starting on their homework.

When the bell for evening self-study rang, a faint shadow seemed to envelop Shen Xingruo’s mind. Lu Xingyan had returned. In the two days they had been seatmates, she had never seen him attend evening self-study before, so she couldn’t help but glance at him a few more times.

He seemed to have just finished playing basketball, with sweat still glistening on his forehead. As he sat down, he leaned back in his chair and drank water in large gulps. Despite sweating, he didn’t emit any strange odor. Instead, there was always a faint scent of grass about him, clean and refreshing.

He was quite good-looking, with a strong sense of youthfulness about him.

Otherwise, with his atrocious personality, no girl would ever like him. She realized she had been staring for a bit too long when she snapped back to reality and found Lu Xingyan returning her gaze with a look that seemed to say, “What are you looking at? Haven’t you seen a handsome guy before? Do you want to take a closer look?”

She paused briefly before calmly averting her gaze.

Lu Xingyan didn’t want to attend evening self-study, but someone had tipped him off that there would be a check tonight.

Although he wasn’t particularly fond of studying, he rarely added to the burdens of the monthly evaluations in their class. Bored out of his mind, he flipped through a book and noticed a Rubik’s Cube on Li Chengfan’s desk, so he casually picked it up.

Li Chengfan was engrossed in a novel and didn’t notice.

Ten minutes later, as Shen Xingruo finished one of her assignments, she glanced at Lu Xingyan inadvertently and suddenly froze.

The way Lu Xingyan casually played with the Rubik’s Cube at first glance seemed like the demeanor of a hidden master, skilled and knowledgeable. But upon closer inspection for just ten seconds, it became evident—he had no clue what he was doing.

Lu Xingyan maintained his usual arrogant attitude. “What are you looking at?”

“…”

“I’m looking at my Rubik’s Cube.”

My Rubik’s Cube.

Lu Xingyan stopped fiddling with the Rubik’s Cube and kicked the leg of Li Chengfan’s chair.

Li Chengfan jumped, thinking he’d been caught by Wang Youfu. “You scared the crap out of me… What the hell…”

Lu Xingyan couldn’t be bothered with small talk. He just shook the Rubik’s Cube in front of him. “Yours?”

“No, I must be crazy. I don’t know how to play… I borrowed it from your seatmate,” he whispered, “I wanted to talk to her, you know? She’s pretty nice. I mentioned wanting to play with it, and she just lent it to me…”

Lu Xingyan remained silent, kicked the leg of his chair again, and then tossed the Rubik’s Cube to Shen Xingruo.

Shen Xingruo used to learn piano and had developed a habit of keeping her fingers active. Even after she stopped learning, she would sometimes play with the Rubik’s Cube to relax her finger joints when she felt tired from writing.

Just as she picked up the Rubik’s Cube from her desk, the duty teacher, Xu Anqiang, appeared at the classroom door with a stern expression, hands behind his back.

Xu Anqiang had quite a reputation for being extreme. Students often complained about him behind his back, and because he was bald, someone gave him the nickname “Baldy Strong.”

Baldy Strong marched straight in and arrived at Lu Xingyan and Shen Xingruo’s desk, scolding loudly, “I’ve been keeping an eye on you two on the surveillance! Playing for a full ten minutes! And still playing now! You two seem quite engrossed!”

In reality, he only saw Lu Xingyan playing on the surveillance, but when he arrived, the Rubik’s Cube was already in Shen Xingruo’s hands, so he included her in the scolding.

Baldy Strong taught math in the science class, and the classes he taught were all experimental classes. He naturally looked down on the liberal arts class. “Fine if you want to play, but after watching for ten minutes on surveillance and not seeing you two solve it, if you can solve all six sides, then I won’t say anything!”

Lu Xingyan had clashed with him before, but he remained unfazed. He stood up casually, blocking Shen Xingruo behind him. “It’s none of her business.”

“It’s none of her business, then what about her…” Before he could finish, Shen Xingruo suddenly placed the Rubik’s Cube on the desk and stood up too. “Teacher, it’s solved.”

Baldy Strong instinctively looked over and saw the Rubik’s Cube, which was in disarray just moments ago, now neatly solved, resting quietly on the desk as if in retirement.

Chapter 7 – Desk mate

“…Yesterday, Aunt Zhou came back and brought two old hens they raised in the countryside. I specifically had her cook them into a soup to nourish you. She started simmering it this morning, and when I left, the whole house was filled with the aroma!” Pei Yue chattered away from the passenger seat, completely unaware of the icy atmosphere in the backseat.

Lu Xingyan remained expressionless, his mind filled with the phrase, “With a lighter, I could also light incense for your grave.” This thought had crossed his mind so many times that he even conjured up a vivid image— a lonely grave in the wilderness, with a worn-out wooden sign standing upright, surrounded by overgrown weeds.

In his imagination, Shen Xingruo inserted a cheap incense bought from the roadside in front of his grave, then calmly lit them one by one with a lighter. Then she would scoff, stand up, brush the ashes off her hands, and briskly pull out his wooden sign, declaring that he wasn’t even worthy of a name in death.

“…What’s with your attitude, Lu Xingyan?! I’m talking to you!” The car stopped at a red light, and Lu Shan couldn’t help but turn around to scold him.

Lu Xingyan snapped out of his thoughts, and raised his eyelids to glance at his father, “What?”

Pei Yue interjected, “Your dad asked about your grades from last semester.”

Lu Xingyan remained silent.

Mingli was quite considerate, and to ensure students had a peaceful break during the summer and winter holidays, they always announced the results of the final exams at the beginning of the next semester. This semester, the results were posted on the second day of school, with detailed three-page reports pinned at the back of the classroom, including individual subject rankings and other less common data.

Li Chengfan had a strong sense of pride. When he saw the rankings, he exclaimed in frustration, “What’s the school trying to do? Are they exposing us completely?!”

Initially, nobody paid much attention to the bottom few on the last page, but Li’s outburst prompted some to flip through.

Well, those few at the bottom seemed to perform consistently poorly in every subject.

Shen Xingruo listened to the exam analysis class and carefully examined the class’s grades. She roughly estimated and gained a preliminary understanding of the student’s level in Mingli and her performance relative to it.

From the results of this final exam, He Siyue and Di Jiajing could be considered among the top students in the grade. But overall, Class One was trailing behind in the three humanities and social sciences experimental classes. As for Lu Xingyan, he truly was at the bottom of the class.

Seeing Lu Xingyan silent, Lu Shan turned to Shen Xingruo, “Xingruo, what do you think he scored?”

Shen Xingruo paused for a moment. “I didn’t pay much attention, but I think it was 297?”

“It’s 337.”

Lu Xingyan suddenly spoke, shooting Shen Xingruo a glance as if he was quite dissatisfied with her underreporting his score by forty points.

Lu Shan choked up for a moment, suddenly feeling that he shouldn’t have had any unrealistic expectations about Lu Xingyan.

Pei Yue remained composed. After Lu Xingyan reported his score, she was still focused on photo editing, her face displaying an air of “I’ve long known his real level.”

That evening at dinner, after finishing their meal, Lu Xingyan and Shen Xingruo each went back to their rooms, and the night passed without incident.

The next morning, Lu Shan had to fly to the capital for some urgent matter; he didn’t even have time for breakfast before leaving. Whether it was a coincidence or planned, as soon as Lu Shan left, Lu Xingyan came downstairs, carrying his backpack as if he were about to leave.

Pei Yue asked, “Where are you going so early?”

“Classmate’s birthday.” He casually grabbed a slice of toast from the table, stuck it in his mouth, and took a few sips of milk.

Shen Xingruo suddenly stopped, staring at the glass of milk, unblinking.

Lu Xingyan noticed her gaze, glanced at the milk in his hand, then inadvertently spotted another empty glass on the table, and suddenly understood something.

Pei Yue didn’t pay much attention and continued to ask, “Classmate? Why didn’t you take Ruo Ruo with you?”

“High school classmates, she doesn’t know them.”

“Are you coming back for dinner tonight?”

“No.”

Lu Xingyan didn’t bother to say more; he just walked out and waved before leaving.

“You see, all he does all day is wander around instead of studying. He lacks ambition! When his dad and I were young, we were nothing like this. I don’t know who he’s taking after!”

“Oh, I swear, one of these days he’s going to drive me so crazy that I’ll end up with white hair…”

Shen Xingruo quietly listened to Pei Yue’s ramblings, discreetly pushing the glass of milk tainted by Lu Xingyan away.

Lu Xingyan didn’t go far. Today was Chen Zhu’s birthday, and they had already arranged for a villa party by Fallen Star Lake, organized by Shen Xingruo herself.

Xu Chengzhou and others brought ingredients and seasonings and had a barbecue on the lawn outside the villa at noon.

Lu Xingyan didn’t know what he was thinking about. He held a skewer of chicken wings, flipping them back and forth over the fire until they were almost burnt, yet he didn’t eat them.

“Lu Xingyan, your chicken wings are about to burn! What are you thinking?” Chen Zhu, in the middle of a conversation, noticed the wings and shouted at him.

Only then did Lu Xingyan come back to his senses, and he casually handed the wings to her. “You eat them.”

Chen Zhu leaned back, looking disgusted. “Forget it, I’m not risking my life.”

“Come on, Miss Zhu, you’re ungrateful. Young Master Lu condescends to grill chicken wings for you and look at you, you’re so disdainful,” one of the guys teased.

“Why not? Can’t I be disgusted?”

“Sure, sure, birthday girl, whatever you say!” Chen Zhu clicked her tongue in annoyance.

Today was her birthday, and she deliberately wore a bright red dress, the bold color complementing her perfectly. With a birthday crown perched on her head, she looked lively and animated, chatting and laughing with everyone.

Somehow, the conversation drifted back to Lu Xingyan. “Hey, Lu Dashaoye, why didn’t we just go to your place directly? It would have been much simpler. I spent ten minutes looking for this place.”

Lu Xingyan didn’t respond or even lift his eyes. He acted as if he hadn’t heard, tossing some unwanted chicken wings onto the grill before cracking open a beer.

Chen Zhu interjected, “Why would I go to his house for my birthday? That’s ridiculous.”

Chen Zhu had mentioned it to Lu Xingyan on WeChat before, suggesting they could just go to his place for her birthday since they used to hang out there often. She didn’t think much about it, but Lu Xingyan had simply replied, “Inconvenient,” without explaining why.

As they continued to barbecue and later cut the cake, they chatted among themselves.

“There’s a transfer student in Class 1, right? I keep hearing people talk about her.”

“YeAh that transfer student is really pretty!”

Ben He, from Class 1, confirmed, “Indeed, she’s quite beautiful.”

“I think her name is Shen Xingruo, and it’s such a lovely name.”

“Hey, speaking of this transfer student, I find it strange. I’ve been to Class 1 several times, but I’ve never seen her,” Xu Chengzhou pondered, elbowing Lu Xingyan, “What do you think?”

Lu Xingyan had been asked this question at least eighteen times by now. He casually replied, “If I say she’s beautiful, do you think she could become the global beauty pageant champion?”

Xu Chengzhou was momentarily stunned, deciding to elevate Lu Xingyan to the top of the Sarcasm Masters list.

In the afternoon, they sang songs and played cards. Lu Xingyan played a few rounds of poker, but Xu Chengzhou was too damn indecisive; it took him forever to play a single card. Fed up with waiting, Lu Xingyan threw the cards to Ben He and went outside to smoke.

Although he wasn’t a heavy smoker, he lit one anyway, taking a few puffs before tossing it away.

Suddenly, Chen Zhu came out of the house, holding her phone in both hands, her eyes red and swollen. Something was wrong.

Lu Xingyan flicked the ash from his cigarette and casually asked, “Hey, what’s wrong?”

Without lifting her head, Chen Zhu walked outside without a word.

Lu Xingyan didn’t want to get involved, but since it was by Fallen Star Lake, and people drowned there almost every year, he put out his cigarette and followed her.

When they reached the outside, Chen Zhu couldn’t hold back her tears any longer. “He has a girlfriend now! He has a girlfriend already! Sob… and he posted pictures of them together on my birthday!”

Lu Xingyan took her phone and glanced at it. It turned out her childhood sweetheart, Xiao Baiyang, had posted lovey-dovey photos on his social media.

Chen Zhu: “It must be that girl who posted it! She’s declaring war against me!!”

“You’re overthinking it. This sounds like the guy’s tone,” Lu Xingyan remarked.

Chen Zhu choked for three seconds before bursting into louder sobs.

Lu Xingyan: “…”

It was strange. This time, he didn’t feel anything special. He just felt Chen Zhu’s crying was giving him a headache.

He didn’t know what to say, as he had never been good at comforting people. After standing there for a while, all he managed to say was, “Stop crying.”

Chen Zhu didn’t even hear what he said. She was completely engulfed in the one-sided heartbreak, crying more vigorously as she became more invested in her grief.

Lu Xingyan stood there indifferently for two minutes. Unable to bear it any longer, he called Xu Chengzhou and asked him to quickly find a few girls to come over.

While waiting, Lu Xingyan pondered the ultimate question of life—why did he ever like her? No, it shouldn’t be liked.

It all started with a game of Truth or Dare. Lu Xingyan was asked what type of girl he liked. He casually mentioned a few criteria and was criticized for not being sincere enough. They insisted he provide a reference.

After some thought, and not finding anyone else around who wasn’t annoying and could have a normal interaction, he mentioned, “Someone like Chen Zhu, I guess.”

In the end, he didn’t know how it happened. The phrase “like Chen Zhu” got automatically translated to just “Chen Zhu.” His buddies kept arranging scenes for him with Chen Zhu, pushing him to spend more time alone with her.

As time went on, he started feeling as if he had been brainwashed, convincing himself that he must like Chen Zhu. Recently, when he found out that Chen Zhu liked her childhood friend, he initially felt genuinely upset. But the next day, he woke up completely accepting the fact and decided to no longer harbor a one-sided affection for Chen Zhu.

On the other side, Shen Xingruo woke up from her nap, practiced the piano for a while, and then planned to study at the library. Over the past two years, the city government has been vigorously promoting the development of the area around the North City’s Falling Star Lake. They even relocated the city library nearby, which was just a ten-minute walk from the Lu family’s residence.

Shen Xingruo slung her backpack over her shoulder, hands in her pockets, listening to some music as she strolled along the Falling Star Lake. Suddenly, she caught sight of a familiar figure ahead and paused. It was Lu Xingyan.

Beside Lu Xingyan stood a girl, her hair disheveled, crying her heart out. Lu Xingyan, on the other hand, leaned casually against a tree trunk, watching indifferently.

At first glance, it looked like a typical breakup scenario where the guy was indifferent while the girl was in tears, desperately trying to salvage the relationship. Knowing it wasn’t her business to intervene, Shen Xingruo decided to take a detour.

Lu Xingyan didn’t return home until after eleven at night. Shen Xingruo happened to be downstairs getting a drink and seeing his exhausted and lazy demeanor, she couldn’t help but imagine a draining melodrama of breaking up and pleading to stay together.

On Sunday, both of them stayed at home, not even exchanging a glance. Shen Xingruo felt that this was fine and hoped it would stay this way in the future. However, when she returned to school in the evening, she heard some unsettling news from Shi Qin, “Xingruo, we’re changing seats tomorrow. The seating chart is in the group. Guess who’s your new desk mate? It’s Lu Xingyan!”

Chapter 6 – Sweep the floor

On the first night back at school, the boys in the dormitory engaged in late-night chatter, with Shen Xingruo emerging as the undisputed leading lady.

“…She’s damn gorgeous! Today morning, Wang Youfu kept blabbering away during politics class. Normally, I’d be in bed early, you know, but I couldn’t sleep the whole darn period! Shen Xingruo was sitting diagonally in front of me, damn it! She’s truly intoxicating! Every time I glanced up, there she was, with that profile, unbelievable!”

“She might be a goddess, but don’t you guys think she’s a bit aloof? Seems like she’s not easy to approach and gives off a cold vibe.”

Bian He pushed his glasses and earnestly agreed, “Shen Xingruo might seem a bit distant. I feel like Zhai Jiajing is more approachable. With someone like Shen Xingruo, most guys just can’t keep up…”

Before Bian He finished speaking, Lu Xingyan emerged from the bathroom.

He was wearing a black T-shirt and sports shorts, just finished showering, his hair still wet, droplets trickling down his forehead.

His roommate, who had previously praised Shen Xingruo as a goddess, casually asked, “Hey, Yan Ge, what do you think of that transfer student today?”

“Not much,” Lu Xingyan replied without lifting an eyelid, toweling his hair as he walked out.

The door to the adjacent dormitory was closed, but the soundproofing wasn’t great, and voices could be heard clearly from inside. “…As you all know, Model UN speeches are all in English. Her spoken English is excellent, and her logic is clear, so I’m quite impressed.”

“He Siyue cut the act. It’s just because she’s good-looking that you’re impressed.”

He Siyue chuckled, then added, “Well, it’s not wrong. Shen Xingruo is quite eye-catching, but she did perform exceptionally well at that Model UN conference.”

The occupants of this dorm were all academic achievers, and the discussion quickly turned to where Shen Xingruo stood academically in the grade. They also incidentally agreed that Shen Xingruo’s looks were top-notch, ranking her among the top three in the entire school.

Lu Xingyan couldn’t understand why everyone was so fixated on Shen Xingruo. What’s so special about a peacock anyway? They couldn’t stop talking about it, always circling back to the Model UN conference.

At the mention of the “Model UN conference,” Lu Xingyan recalled Shen Xingruo’s expression from earlier in the day…

Though she showed no expression, it was as if her calm face was saying, “Oh, I knew it. You’re just an uncultured brat.”

Recalling this, Lu Xingyan’s mood soured.

As he approached Li Chengfan’s dorm, the door was slightly ajar, and he heard bursts of laughter from inside:

“Hahaha! Damn, you’ve got quite the imagination!”

“No, seriously, if her chest were two cup sizes bigger, the visual impact, the feel… But well, with Shen Xingruo’s looks, bros can handle it.”

“And you’re quite the saint for enduring it all,” Lu Xingyan suddenly pushed the door open.

“Hey, Young Master Lu,” the guy didn’t catch the undertone of his words, just raised his chin in greeting.

Lu Xingyan glanced at him, silent, and headed straight for Li Chengfan’s bed, emanating an aura of “I don’t know you.”

Li Chengfan wasn’t in the dorm, so Lu Xingyan found the charger he needed, took it, and left without saying a word. He felt Shen Xingruo was quite good at putting on airs, but he wasn’t particularly interested in hearing people discuss girls in a vulgar direction.

In the dorm, several guys exchanged confused looks, unsure where they had offended this young master, their minds filled with question marks.

The pace of Mingli’s teaching progressed quickly; all the new lessons for the first semester of the sophomore year were already covered. This semester started directly with the first round of reviews. Fortunately, the progress before in Huize No. 1 High School wasn’t slow either, with only two units left in history to be taught. Shen Xingruo was adapting to the new environment relatively well, considering that most classmates were friendly and kind, and the teachers were amiable.

However, there was one thing that bothered her a bit—what Shi Qin had mentioned about people coming to the class to watch Lu Xingyan seemed to be happening to her as well. She didn’t know what kind of rumors were spreading about her in the school, but in the first few days of school, there were always students from other classes peeking into the classroom through the front and back doors and windows.

Once, when she returned from the restroom, she overheard two boys discussing by the back door:

“Which one is Shen Xingruo?”

“I didn’t see anyone particularly pretty.”

She didn’t say anything, went to the office to ask about two questions, and returned to the classroom only when the class bell rang. Other than that, the first week of school passed relatively calmly.

On Friday at noon, Pei Yue called, saying that Lu Shan was free today and would pick her and Lu Xingyan up after school.

Before afternoon class, when she saw Lu Xingyan, Shen Xingruo intended to say something to him. However, his indifferent expression, one that seemed to say, “Though I see you, you’re no different from a trash can,” made Shen Xingruo decide against it.

The last class, which was supposed to be a class meeting, was changed to self-study. Shen Xingruo didn’t want to take her books home, so, during self-study, she finished her Chinese and history homework. Three minutes before the end of class, she started packing her bag.

But the class monitor in front suddenly turned around and said, “Shen Xingruo, after you finish cleaning today, could you please stay a bit longer? Because someone will come to inspect today.”

Wait a minute.

Cleaning duty.

Seeing Shen Xingruo’s expression, the class monitor thought she might not want to stay. Carefully, she asked, “Are you unable to stay?”

Shen Xingruo: “No, I can stay.”

Soon, the dismissal bell rang, and the students in the class naturally relaxed. Some stretched, some chatted, and others hurriedly packed their bags and dashed out of the classroom at the speed of a 50-meter sprint.

Outside the window, the honey-colored sunset cast a golden glow on the classroom desks. The sound of organizing textbooks and conversations mingled with the sound of chairs scraping against the floor, weaving together into the most unique concerto of the end of the school day.

Shen Xingruo walked to the back of the classroom and carefully reviewed the cleaning schedule that she had ignored countless times before:

Friday Cleaning:

Shen Xingruo – Groups 1 and 2 and the corridor;

Lu Xingyan – Groups 3 and 4 and the podium.

Whoever arranged the cleaning duties was undoubtedly a genius.

Shen Xingruo stood there for a few seconds, digesting the information, then messaged Pei Yue to inform her that they might be late by half an hour.

Pei Yue quickly responded with an “OK” gesture.

As Mingli required compulsory boarding, most students chose to go home for the weekend, so after school on Fridays, everyone left pretty quickly.

Shen Xingruo waited until almost everyone had left before grabbing a broom to start sweeping. But as she turned around, she saw Lu Xingyan with a basketball tucked under his arm, casually walking out with a few other guys, arm in arm. There were also a few boys from other classes outside, seemingly waiting for them.

“Lu Xingyan.”

Her voice sounded somewhat out of place in the now-empty classroom.

Lu Xingyan turned around, his gaze lazy. “What’s up?”

“We need to clean. You’re assigned to sweep Groups 3 and 4 and the podium. Someone is coming to inspect today.”

Before Lu Xingyan could respond, there was suddenly laughter outside the classroom:

“Haha! Lu Xingyan doing cleaning duty! Hahaha!”

“Are you kidding me?”

“Damn, hahaha!”

The phrase “doing cleaning duty” seemed unfamiliar to Lu Xingyan. He hesitated for a moment before walking over to look at the cleaning schedule.

Seeing Shen Xingruo still staring at him, he glanced at her dismissively. “We’re in the same group, so while you’re at it, just clean my area too. Thanks.”

Without giving Shen Xingruo a chance to refuse, he walked out with the group of guys in tow.

Before they disappeared from view, Shen Xingruo could still hear the boys teasing Lu Xingyan about the task.

He Siyue had gone to the teacher’s office and returned just in time to witness the scene.

“They’re like that. Don’t let it get to you,” he said gently, walking over to Shen Xingruo.

Shen Xingruo shook her head. “It’s fine.”

Every school had a group of people who excelled at nothing but squandering their time and money. She was no stranger to them.

“I’ll help you.”

He Siyue also grabbed a broom and helped her sweep the floor. Shen Xingruo thanked him without refusing. After all, with someone coming to inspect today, she couldn’t finish cleaning alone.

He Siyue worked efficiently. By the time Shen Xingruo finished sweeping the first group, he had already swept the front and back of the classroom, the corridor, and the other two groups.

He Siyue: “I’ll take care of the second group.”

Shen Xingruo: “It’s okay, I can handle it myself.”

After some thought, He Siyue nodded. “Alright, then I’ll change the trash bags.”

As Shen Xingruo swept intermittently, she glanced up and couldn’t help but wonder why all these sixteen or seventeen-year-old boys ended up so differently—some like He Siyue, while others like Lu Xingyan.

After finishing cleaning, they went to wash their hands in the restroom. On their way back to the classroom, He Siyue asked, “Are you going home today, since it’s Friday?”

Lu’s house could temporarily be considered her home, too.

Shen Xingruo replied with a simple “Hmm” and reciprocated, “How about you?”

“I’m going home too. We can leave together later.”

Shen Xingruo: “I need to stay a bit longer; someone is inspecting the cleanliness today.”

He Siyue: “No problem, I’ll wait for you.”

Shen Xingruo was about to say something else when Wang Youfu saw them and waved. “Hey, He Siyue, come to my office for a moment.”

Well, she didn’t have to refuse now.

Lu Xingyan had a knack for picking the right moment. As soon as the cleaning was done, he returned to the classroom. Seeing Shen Xingruo walking in while drying her hands, he took off the sweat-drenched headband and remarked, “Miss Shen, you’ve got quite the cleaning skills. Very neat.”

Shen Xingruo remained indifferent, giving him a sidelong glance without a word.

Lu Xingyan chuckled softly, leaned back in his chair, and leisurely unscrewed a bottle of mineral water.

Their classroom was the first one on the ground floor, so the cleanliness inspection was scheduled first.

After the routine inspection by the school cadres, Shen Xingruo slung her bag over her shoulder and stood up. As she passed by Lu Xingyan’s seat, she paused.

Lu Xingyan was taking a sip of water, leaning back in his chair with one hand on the backrest and the other holding the water bottle. His head tilted upward, fully exposing his neck, where the Adam’s apple moved distinctly up and down.

Suddenly, Shen Xingruo spoke up, “Out of respect for Aunt Pei and Uncle Lu, I won’t dwell on today’s matter with you. But please, have the self-awareness not to cause trouble for others in the future.”

Lu Xingyan found it somewhat amusing. He set down the water bottle, leaned against the backrest, and tilted his head slightly. “I haven’t even mentioned the basketball incident to you, yet you’re quite bold.”

“When the basketball nearly hit me, it was less than three centimeters away. You can’t even say sorry, yet you expect me to throw it back for you?” Shen Xingruo’s gaze was cold.

They locked eyes for three seconds before Lu Xingyan suddenly stood up. He was tall, and even in a slightly slouched posture, Shen Xingruo’s head couldn’t reach his nose tip. She could sense a faint smell of tobacco from him, likely from smoking.

Feeling uncomfortable, Shen Xingruo instinctively covered her nose and moved back a step.

Lu Xingyan stared at her, then leaned forward slightly. “What are you pretending for?”

Shen Xingruo remained silent.

“I’m tired just by looking at you.” Lu Xingyan lazily fished out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and slid out one, offering it to Shen Xingruo. “I won’t bother with the lighter.”

Confusion lingered in Shen Xingruo’s mind for three seconds before she recalled their first encounter and finally understood.

She looked at Lu Xingyan and suddenly asked, “Do you think lighters are only for lighting cigarettes?”

Lu Xingyan raised an eyebrow, neither confirming nor denying.

She lowered her eyelashes and pushed the cigarette back into the pack, her voice barely audible. “With a lighter, I could also light incense for your grave.”

Chapter 5 – Model United Nations

In the middle of the night, a light rain fell, leaving the ground slightly damp in the morning. Opening the window, the air felt exceptionally fresh.

“Why are you opening the window? It’s freezing!”

“Sorry, I just wanted to let some air in. If you’re cold, I’ll close it.” Zhai Jiajing turned around, offering an apologetic smile.

Seeing it was Zhai Jiajing, the guy paused, rubbed his nose, and mumbled, “It’s okay, you can keep it open. Ventilating is good.”

Zhai Jiajing was the class monitor, excelling academically, beautiful, and very understanding and gentle. Many guys in the class had a crush on her.

The girl sitting next to him rolled her eyes and pushed his elbow aside disdainfully, then looked up and asked, “Zhai Jiajing, I heard there’s a transfer student in your dorm. Where is she?”

“Oh, she should be coming over with Shi Qin.”

Shi Qin stayed up until three in the morning doing her winter break homework. The dormitory lights went out at eleven, but she managed to drain the battery of all four small desk lamps and finish her assignments.

When Zhai Jiajing left in the morning, Shi Qin still couldn’t be awakened.

Shen Xingruo woke up at the first call, but after checking the time, she calmly said from under her blanket, “I’ll sleep a bit longer.”

As a class cadre, Zhai Jiajing had a lot to do on the first day of school, so she couldn’t wait for them to wake up and ended up leaving first.

By 7:25, most of the class had arrived. Some were chatting, some were reviewing vocabulary, some were doing homework, and some were sneaking breakfast. The whole classroom buzzed like boiling water, bustling with activity.

“Lin Yu proposed publicly, and at a concert! Is he out of his mind? Why would he do something so reckless? His fan base has been dropping rapidly lately, and the engagement rate on his super-topic has plummeted!”

“…Huh? Weren’t there supposed to be ten sets of English test papers?

“I only have ten. I counted them when they were handed out—only ten!”

“…I randomly filled in the math multiple-choice questions.” Shouldn’t have bothered to check? It seems like all these winter break assignments we handed in have been treated as trash.”

And then there was gossip: “I heard Lu Xingyan and Xu Chengzhou from Class Three, and Chen Zhu went out together, to the beach. Do you think Lu Xingyan and Chen Zhu might be dating?”

Another girl looked puzzled. “But weren’t they already dating?”

“Who told you that? Not true.”

“Well then, I don’t know. I always thought they were together last semester. Oh, by the way, it seems like we have a transfer student in our class. She’s staying in Zhai Jiajing’s dorm.”

“I had no idea.”

“Li Ting mentioned it last night when we had dinner together.”

The girl looked around, perplexed. “Where is she…”

As if on cue, at 7:30, Shi Qin and Shen Xingruo entered the classroom one after the other as the bell for morning self-study rang.

When Shen Xingruo entered, the classroom was still bustling, but soon after, everyone quieted down—

Wang Youfu appeared at the classroom door, holding his red thermos cup and wearing a stern expression. Shen Xingruo was somewhat surprised; she hadn’t expected the class teacher, Wang Youfu, to be so intimidating.

The classroom was soon filled with the sound of reading, in both Chinese and English. Faintly, one could hear someone reciting the significance of the scientific development concept and the historical meaning of the Sino-Japanese War of 1894.

Wang Youfu looked satisfied as he leisurely walked to the platform and put down his cherished thermos cup—no, he picked it up again the next second.

“Let’s pause for a moment, everyone. Let me introduce our new classmate.” He waved to Shen Xingruo. “Come on up and introduce yourself.”

Shen Xingruo wasn’t nervous at all. She walked up to the platform, bowed lightly, and then turned to write three large characters on the blackboard. Gracefully, she said, “Hello, everyone. My name is Shen Xingruo. I hope to learn from everyone and progress together in the future.”

Three seconds of silence, and then applause broke out in the classroom.

Wang Youfu looked pleased again, scanning the room. He pointed to an empty seat. “Shen Xingruo, please sit there for now. We’ll rearrange the seating next week.”

Shen Xingruo nodded and headed towards her seat.

Once everyone was seated, Wang Youfu held his thermos cup and began his customary speech, the first spellbinding incantation of the new semester. “Next semester, you’ll be in your senior year. Don’t think that you’re still in junior year and that the college entrance exam is far away…”

He had just begun when a lazy voice interrupted from the doorway. “Reporting in.”

Lu Xingyan stood there casually in his school uniform, boneless, with his head slightly tilted. He wore his backpack with only one strap over his shoulder, and there was a basketball tucked under his arm.

Wang Youfu glanced at him, unsure if he intended to scold or what, but before he could say anything, his phone rang—

It was a call from the grade leader.

Wang Youfu didn’t have time to deal with Lu Xingyan. He hurriedly stepped out while answering the phone.

Lu Xingyan showed no intention of waiting for Wang Youfu to come back and reprimand him. He simply walked in, pausing slightly as he passed Shen Xingruo’s seat.

Shen Xingruo noticed. His basketball looked new, without a speck of dust. It wasn’t the one from last night.

At that moment, Lu Xingyan casually released the basketball, patting it lightly on the ground. The ball hit the floor with a dull, echoing thud.

Shen Xingruo remained unfazed, meeting Lu Xingyan’s gaze without changing her expression.

Lu Xingyan didn’t say anything, just stared at her for a few seconds. Then, he strangely tugged at the corner of his lips before continuing to walk towards the back row.

Shen Xingruo interpreted his gaze as “You wait for me.”

Their seats were separated by an aisle. Shen Xingruo sat in the fifth row of the second section, while Lu Xingyan sat in the seventh row of the first section, not too far apart. Whenever Lu Xingyan looked forward, he could always catch a glimpse of Shen Xingruo’s figure.

When Wang Youfu returned, his gaze swept around until he found Lu Xingyan. He said, “You’re late. Write out the political agenda ten times and hand it in.”

Lu Xingyan didn’t argue. He just replied with an “okay.”

Wang Youfu continued with his previous topic, droning on. Halfway through, Lu Xingyan couldn’t help but yawn.

“I heard you were playing basketball last night, and a girl threw the ball into the trash can. Damn, is this a new tactic to get your attention?” Li Chengfan, his deskmate, whispered.

It wasn’t surprising for Li Chengfan to think that way. Nowadays, female students are quite innovative, having read plenty of novels. They knew that ordinary gestures like sending love letters or chocolates couldn’t spark any excitement in the night sky.

Last semester, when Lu Xingyan finally made it to the cafeteria, he had a bowl of hot soup thrown at him by a girl from the science class.

There was also a bold freshman girl who approached Lu Xingyan with a bossy CEO-style confession, even attempting to kiss him on tiptoe. Unfortunately, she wasn’t tall enough, and Lu Xingyan lifted her away like a little chick.

Li Chengfan asked, “Which class is that girl from? What does she look like? Doing this right at the beginning of the semester, she’s quite impressive. Did you guys manage to get the ball back?”

“Didn’t ask for it.” Lu Xingyan twirled his pen casually, glancing at Shen Xingruo out of the corner of his eye.

“Damn, what a waste,” Li Chengfan remarked.

Seeing Lu Xingyan’s lack of response, Li Chengfan quickly shifted to a new topic. “Hey, you didn’t notice earlier, but in the second section, fifth row… that girl sitting with Ruan Wen, the new transfer student, she’s gorgeous!”

He discreetly pointed out the girl to Lu Xingyan, emphasizing the word “gorgeous.”

Not only Li Chengfan, but many students in the classroom were whispering about Shen Xingruo, occasionally sneaking glances at her.

Unfazed, Shen Xingruo listened to Wang Youfu while reading her book. At Hui Ze, the college entrance exam included self-made questions for the liberal arts subjects, so the textbooks for the three liberal arts subjects were different from those at Ming Li School.

She hadn’t had the chance to pick up the new books yet, so she borrowed them from Shi Qin before leaving home, taking this opportunity to compare them.

At exactly 8 o’clock, the bell rang, signaling the end of morning self-study. Wang Youfu finally finished his speech. “Alright, that’s all for now. You still need to think carefully about your studies. Oh, class monitor, where’s the class monitor—Ah Ruan Wen, I won’t collect the winter break homework for politics yet. I’ll discuss the exam papers during class.”

“Okay, Mr. Wang,” Ruan Wen responded gently and obediently.

Shen Xingruo turned her head slightly, and Ruan Wen sensitively met her gaze, politely and somewhat awkwardly smiling. “Hello, I’m Ruan Wen.”

She opened her book, showing Shen Xingruo her name. “This one.”

Shen Xingruo nodded. “Hello, I’m Shen Xingruo.”

Ruan Wen nodded twice. “Your name sounds very nice. Is it from Cao Cao’s ‘Observing the Sea,’ where the stars are shining brightly as if coming from within?”

Shen Xingruo wasn’t sure, but she just smiled faintly.

As Wang Youfu left the platform, the classroom buzzed with activity again.

Just as Shen Xingruo finished greeting Ruan Wen, a boy from the back patted her shoulder.

She turned around.

The boy had a gentle smile, revealing white and neatly aligned teeth. He looked sunny and clean, with a hint of familiarity.

“Shen Xingruo, do you remember me?” His voice sounded somewhat familiar.

“I’m He Siyue.”

The name sounded vaguely familiar too.

He Siyue smiled helplessly. “Looks like you don’t remember. We met at the Model United Nations conference before. You were from Huize First High School, right?”

He tried to provide more details to jog her memory. “The theme of that Model UN conference was ocean environmental protection and development. You were the representative of New Zealand, and I was the representative of Nigeria. We both received the Best Delegate award. After it ended, we had dinner together.”

Shen Xingruo finally remembered. “Oh, it’s you.”

She felt a bit dry and added, “What a coincidence.”

“YeAh too coincidental. It’s been a year since we last met, but I recognized you at first sight,” Siyue said.

“Sorry, but you… um… have changed a bit since the Model UN,” Shen Xingruo said, refusing to admit that her memory wasn’t great.

Siyue chuckled again. “Just got a new hairstyle.”

As he spoke, he slightly lowered his head and ruffled his hair.

People nearby appeared to mind their own business, but they were all secretly listening to their conversation.

When they heard keywords like “Best Delegate,” everyone was surprised. A student transferred from Huize First High School, who had won the Best Delegate award at the Model UN conference, seemed to be quite a high achiever…

Lu Xingyan and Li Chengfan also overheard, but they were typical latecomers and had no idea what a Model UN conference was.

Liu Xingyan didn’t know, but he wouldn’t say it. Li Chengfan, on the other hand, was different. With a puzzled expression, he asked, “What’s the Model United Nations Conference? The Model Alliance Conference?”

The voice came out during a brief lull, sounding a bit abrupt.

He Siyue and Shen Xingruo both glanced over, seemingly spontaneously.

Liu Xingyan licked his molars, expressionless as he rolled up the textbook on the table and tapped Li Chengfan’s head. “If you don’t know, then shut up.”

At this moment, Li Chengfan displayed a strong thirst for knowledge. “You know? Then tell us what it is.”

Liu Xingyan: “…”

Damn, you’re annoying as hell.

Chapter 4 – Basketball

Inside the stationery store.

“That’ll be one hundred seventy-three yuan and fifty cents. Cash or mobile payment?”

“Mobile.”

“Then please scan this.”

Shen Xingruo scanned the code and entered the payment amount. However, her fingers were icy cold, and there was no response during the fingerprint verification. After spending some time at the checkout counter, she finally settled the bill and pushed open the glass door.

A gust of wind rushed into her collar, making her feel wet and cold. The figure under the tree was nowhere to be seen.

The words echoed in her mind like a spell, and even now, her thoughts couldn’t focus. Absentmindedly dragging her suitcase, she headed towards Shuxiang Road where Mingli was located.

Shuxiang Road was a narrow and long one-way street lined with evergreen camphor trees on both sides. On the right side of the road was the Mingli campus, where the school playground and basketball court could be seen through the gaps in the fence. On the left were some shops and Mingli’s dormitories.

It was only when she got closer that Shen Xingruo realized that Mingli’s dormitory building was not inside the school but across the street.

With the arrangements made by Lu Shan earlier, the transfer process wasn’t too complicated. In the office of the High School Class Two Politics Group, Shen Xingruo met the new homeroom teacher.

The new homeroom teacher was named Wang Youfu, who looked to be in his forties or fifties, not very tall, and a bit chubby, with a kind and approachable demeanor. He moved a bit slowly and took five minutes to find the forms. He also spoke slowly, never letting go of the thermos, “Don’t worry, here at Mingli, we’re not inferior to Huize No.1 Middle School.”

Shen Xingruo flipped through the stationery she had just bought. …Why were they all pencils?

“I graduated from South City Normal University back then, you know. At that time, it was all state-assigned placements, you understand? I went to Huize first after graduation. Huize No.1 Middle School was a school for children of migrant workers at that time. The faculty and teaching were quite ordinary, and the salary was low. It was only in the past twenty or thirty years, with the support of the Huize government, that it developed quickly.”

Shen Xingruo found a black water-based pen on the desk and began filling out the form. “I’m quite familiar with Huize No.1 Middle School. The current principal there, Shen Zhibo, was assigned to Huize No.1 with me. We used to live in the staff dorms together, and he was next door to me. Can you believe someone with his level of incompetence is now the principal…”

Shen Xingruo: “…”

“The situation at Mingli is different. It has some background. It was founded during the Republic of China era, called the Provincial Higher Secondary School at that time. Over the years, it has produced many academicians and leaders.”

As she filled out the form, Shen Xingruo made a few “Hmm” sounds.

Wang Youfu, unsure if he missed something, held onto his thermos for a while, muttering to himself, “The salary is also high.”

Shen Xingruo’s hand holding the pen paused for a moment. After finishing the form, Wang Youfu took Shen Xingruo to the office at the west end of the corridor.

After completing the procedures, she obtained a form required for enrollment.

Wang Youfu seemed to have some free time and even gestured as if he were going to take her to get school uniforms and dormitory supplies.

Shen Xingruo politely declined, knowing that if she let this homeroom teacher lead the way, she might not even have time for dinner tonight.

After leaving the office, Shen Xingruo first went to the library to collect her school uniform and then proceeded to the dormitory.

The dormitory area at Mingli included connected male and female dormitory buildings arranged in a U-shaped structure, a row of faculty dormitories, and a cafeteria.

When Shen Xingruo arrived at Room 403 on the fourth floor, the door was wide open.

“Jingjing, just wait a moment! I’ll be done copying it soon!” A girl in a pink hoodie was fervently writing at the desk.

“I’m just wearing a coat, take your time writing, it’s okay,” someone responded, their voice seeming to come from the bathroom.

The girl sitting by the door was curling her bangs with a curling iron. Suddenly remembering something, she leaned back and shouted in the direction of the bathroom, “Hey? Ajing, did Wang Youfu say we have to submit the social practice form? I forgot to get it stamped.”

“When I went to see him today, he didn’t mention collecting it, but you’d better get it stamped just in case. He might start collecting them in a few days.”

“The school is annoying. Who goes to do social practice during the New Year? It’s all just formalities!” The girl with the curling iron seemed annoyed and threw the mirror onto the table.

Taking advantage of the lull in conversation, Shen Xingruo knocked on the door.

Ajing, who had just come out of the bathroom, and the girl in the pink hoodie, both turned to look at the door.

“Hello, I’m Shen Xingruo, and I’ll be living here from now on.”

There was a moment of silence in the air.

The three roommates stared at Shen Xingruo for about ten seconds, exchanging looks of confusion and blankness.

“Oh… you’re the new transfer student, right?” The girl who had just come out of the bathroom realized, “I heard Mr. Wang mention it today, almost forgot.”

She hurried forward to welcome the new roommate who had suddenly appeared at the door, apologizing as she introduced herself, “Hello, I’m Zhāi Jiājìng.”

The other two still hadn’t come to their senses, their faces expressing disbelief at the fact that a transfer student had come to their class.

Once Zhāi Jiājìng led Shen Xingruo into the room, the girl in the pink hoodie reluctantly shook off her stunned expression and adjusted her glasses. “Um, hello, I’m Shí Qìn.”

Then came another voice from behind, “Listen.”

Shen Xingruo turned to look.

“Her name is Lǐ Tīng, Tīngzi Lǐ.” Zhāi Jiājìng quickly explained.

Oh, got it.

Shen Xingruo nodded.

While most people might feel awkward in a new environment and with unfamiliar people, Shen Xingruo was not like most people. If anyone was going to feel awkward, it would be the others.

She quietly made her bed and organized her desk.

The three roommates were each engrossed in their activities, yet they couldn’t help stealing glances at her from time to time.

The corner of the blanket stubbornly refused to lay flat, sticking up defiantly, much like the arrogant attitude of that insufferably conceited one from the Lu family who knew nothing of manners.

Shen Xingruo stood for a few seconds, contemplating, then grabbed a stack of books and pressed them firmly on top.

Zhao Jiajing hesitated, then asked, “Um… do you need any help?”

Shen Xingruo instinctively wanted to refuse, but as the words reached her lips, they transformed into a “Thank you.”

It was strange, Shen Xingruo seemed to have a certain allure, standing there with her cool demeanor, making people involuntarily drawn to her.

Within minutes, Shi Qin also set aside her winter vacation homework and took the initiative to help tidy up her desk.

Li Ting didn’t bother to approach, engrossed in her phone, though her eyes occasionally flickered towards the opposite side.

With the assistance of Zhao Jiajing and Shi Qin, Shen Xingruo finally managed to tame the stubborn corner of her blanket.

Just as she straightened up, Pei Yue’s call came in.

Glancing at the caller ID, she stepped out.

Shi Qin leaned her head out to look outside, making sure Shen Xingruo was out of earshot before turning back and sighing, “Shen Xingruo is so stunning! I was completely mesmerized when she walked in earlier!”

Zhao Jiajing chimed in, “She has such a great temperament, like someone who dances.”

Shi Qin agreed, “Exactly! She has this incredibly unique vibe! So ethereal!”

Li Ting scoffed, seemingly uninterested, “You’re exaggerating. I still think Chen Zhu from Class Three is prettier.”

“She’s way prettier than Chen Zhu, come on! I don’t find Chen Zhu appealing at all.” Shi Qin had transformed into a little fan of Shen Xingruo, “Ahhh Jiajing! Should we ask her to join us for dinner? She seems a bit aloof!”

Zhao Jiajing suggested, “Let’s ask her when she gets back.”

Li Ting sighed, adjusted her newly styled bangs, grabbed her bag, and stood up. “I’m heading out.”

Shen Xingruo finished her call and bumped into Li Ting at the staircase.

They exchanged a brief nod, both staying silent.

Li Ting seemed indifferent towards her.

Well, that was understandable, considering Shen Xingruo’s clash with Lu Xingyan from the Lu family.

In the evening, Shen Xingruo, Shi Qin, and Zhai Jiajing had dinner together.

Shi Qin was quite the chatterbox, talking non-stop throughout the meal. Even as they walked back to the dormitory along the campus outskirts, her mouth didn’t cease, covering topics ranging from the living conditions in Mingli Dormitory to the scandal of the former grade leader having an affair with the senior English teacher and getting caught red-handed.

The night breeze carried the laughter and footsteps from inside the school grounds over the protective fence.

“…You wouldn’t believe it! He always had this serious demeanor, like a seasoned party cadre, but he ended up getting involved with the English teacher! Back in freshman year, he used to pick on our class all the time, lecturing us during morning exercises. If it weren’t for this guy in our class…” Shi Qin glanced casually toward the basketball court and suddenly paused, “Hey? Isn’t that Lu Xingyan?”

Zhai Jiajing looked up.

Shi Qin craned her neck, peering through the railing gaps, “It is!”

“Xingruo, see that guy in the black T-shirt dribbling the ball? That’s him,” Shi Qin pointed him out to Shen Xingruo, “Remember when our grade leader accused our class of not exercising properly, and after the lecture, he confronted the grade leader? Our classmates got all riled up, throwing their uniforms around, and demanding the grade leader demonstrate first. It almost escalated into a fight with the PE teacher who came to support the grade leader!”

Shen Xingruo imagined the scene of the chickens pecking at each other but didn’t say anything, nor did she show much expression.

“After that incident, the grade leader realized our class wasn’t to be messed with. Oh, and Lu Xingyan… that guy, he’s also in Class One. He’s quite famous in our school. I was in the same class as him in freshman year, and back then, many girls liked him.”

Shen Xingruo asked, “What about you?”

Shi Qin replied, “Me? He’s not my type.”

Shen Xingruo glanced at her.

Although wearing glasses, she had a sharp gaze.

Shi Qin continued, “Last semester when we moved to Build Two, some freshmen from Class One would come over and pretend to pass by our classroom. It was ridiculous. If they just wanted to see a handsome guy, fine, but they always had to use the restroom too, making us wait in line during breaks!”

Zhai Jiajing remained silent for a while, then suddenly asked, “Xingruo, do you want to go inside the school and take a look?”

“No need—”

Before Shen Xingruo could finish, there was a sudden “bang” beside her!

The basketball bounced off her arm, soared three feet high, bounced a few times, and then rolled under a tree, playing dead.

Both Zhai Jiajing and Shi Qin were startled!

Xu Chengzhou exclaimed, “Damn, you threw the ball outside the school! Did you take a blue pill or something?”

Lu Xingyan didn’t respond, he adjusted his headband, panting, and looked outside the protective fence.

The figure outside seemed familiar.

A guy squinted and asked, “Did it just drop under the tree?”

The sky was dimming, and the basketball court’s floodlights provided ample illumination from the outside, making it clear to see in, but rather blurry when looking out.

Someone quickly chimed in, “Seems like it. There are a few girls over there. Just ask them to throw it in.”

So, the guys waved towards the outer school wall, shouting, “Hey, ladies! Can you help us out? Throw the ball in!”

Zhai Jiajing instinctively went to pick up the basketball under the tree.

The gaps in the protective fence were too narrow to fit the ball through. She glanced at the height of the wall and hesitated, “How are we going to throw it over…”

Shi Qin suggested, “Just toss it up… oh well, you don’t seem like someone good at throwing. Give it to me, give it to me, I’ll do it.”

But before Shi Qin could reach out, Shen Xingruo took the ball from Zhai Jiajing’s hand and then simply tossed it—

Into the trash can.

Zhai Jiajing and Shi Qin were both stunned.

“This…”

“Let’s go.” Shen Xingruo’s expression remained unchanged.

Chapter 3 – Don’t pretend

Their gaze held for several seconds. Suddenly, Lu Xingyan took a step back, casually strolling towards another guest room as if nothing had happened. After a few steps, he stopped, his reflexes kicking in as he turned back towards the room he had just left, leaning against the door frame.

“Who are you, coming to my balcony for a late-night visit?” His tone was unfriendly, his tall, slender figure clad in a dark hoodie. Leaning against the door, he revealed half his face, his fair skin betraying a hint of impatience in his expression.

Shen Xingruo quickly equated this unfriendly visitor with the name “Lu Xingyan.”

Without responding, she remained silent for a moment before descending from the bay window, nodding towards him.

Meanwhile, outside the room, Pei Yue was adjusting the desk lamp at Lu Xingyan’s desk, striving to find the perfect lighting for a selfie. Upon hearing the commotion, she quickly pocketed her phone and hurried out.

“What’s going on? Making a scene at a girl’s doorstep late at night. So, you knew I was waiting inside? I’ve never seen your brain work so fast when it comes to studying, but you sure have your way with me,” she said, advancing towards Lu Xingyan, grabbing his ear, and launching into a scolding.

“Mom, let go!” Lu Xingyan frowned.

Seeing Shen Xingruo emerge from inside, Pei Yue patted Lu Xingyan’s head, then put on a smile, turning to Shen Xingruo with concern. “Ruo, why are you still awake? Are you not used to this side yet, or is this boy bothering you?”

Shen Xingruo replied, “No, Auntie Pei, I just got up to drink water.”

Seeing Lu Xingyan’s face conveying “I’m freaking annoyed,” Shen Xingruo maintained her composure and politely nodded. It was only then that Pei Yue remembered to introduce them properly.

“Oh, right, this is my son, Lu Xingyan. I don’t know who he takes after, always in a bad mood and never knows how to talk. Ruo, I hope you don’t mind,” Pei Yue said.

“And this is Shen Shushu’s daughter, Xingruo. She came back to Xing City this year because she needed to take the college entrance exam in her registered residence. She’ll be staying with us from now on. Oh, and Xingruo also attends Mingli School. Please look out for her there,” Pei Yue continued.

Lu Xingyan remarked, “The college entrance exam is still a year and a half away. Why did she transfer so early?”

His unwelcoming demeanor was almost as if he wanted to start sweeping the floor in front of Shen Xingruo’s door with a broom. Pei Yue gave him another firm pat on the head and shot him a look that screamed, “Shut up.”

In Pei Yue’s eyes, these two could be considered childhood sweethearts. They were born on the same day, one in the early morning and the other at midnight. Their families even joked about them becoming in-laws in the future, with both their names containing the character “xing.” However, Shen Guangyao later moved his family to Huize for development, and while the adults stayed in touch, the kids never met again.

As Pei Yue delved into these memories, she underestimated the children’s memories, getting carried away as she enthusiastically recounted how “you two skinny kids were blowing bubbles in a small pool” until she noticed their expressions crumbling to varying degrees.

It wasn’t just a little awkward. It was double awkwardness.

“Cough, well, it seems it’s getting late. Ruo, you should rest early,” Pei Yue said, patting her freshly permed curls from this morning and giving Lu Xingyan a playful pinch.

Lu Xingyan remained expressionless, his face cold as stone, seemingly unaffected.

Amidst his mom’s comments about being “skinny” and wearing “matching split-crotch pants,” it finally clicked for him—

This girl was the same one from the high-speed train earlier today, the one who splashed a bottle of mineral water on the middle-aged man who was getting a bit pudgy. Yet, this “white peacock” seemed to have a memory as fleeting as a goldfish’s.

The shower poured down from above, streams of water converging at his neck and chest, trickling down his torso. Lu Xingyan faced the showerhead, memories flashing through his mind, some fleeting, some interconnecting.

No wonder Xu Chengzhou mentioned seeing his family’s car when they left the high-speed train station.

After stepping out of the shower, he towel-dried his hair while scrolling through his phone’s photo album. Among the photos was one of Chen Zhu, leaning on a guy’s shoulder, smiling brightly.

This morning, when he asked Chen Zhu about the photo, she was surprisingly candid. “Oh, that’s the boy next door. Haven’t I mentioned him before? Is he handsome or what?”

Before Lu Xingyan could react, she continued, “You haven’t seen him in person. He’s cool and cute! Stands straight as a pine tree! Even though he’s at the National Defense University now, distance doesn’t matter. I have to send him photos from time to time so he remembers his childhood sweetheart!”

Lu Xingyan didn’t know how to feel about it, but the term “childhood sweetheart” didn’t sit well with him.

Scrolling down, he stumbled upon another childhood sweetheart of his.

He chuckled softly, tossing his phone onto the bed.

Lu Xingyan didn’t sleep well the whole night. As dawn broke, casting a pale glow across the sky, he finally buried his face in his pillow and drifted into a deep sleep.

When he woke up again, it was already noon. After freshening up, he headed downstairs.

As he reached the corner of the staircase on the second floor, he heard Lu Shan’s voice from below, “Green in color, fragrant in aroma, sweet in taste, and shaped like a sparrow’s tongue. What a good tea!”

“Dad said Uncle Lu, you love Longjing tea the most, so I brought it especially for you,” another voice replied.

Lu Xingyan smirked and tugged at the corner of his lips.

Shen Xingruo stood directly facing the staircase landing. With a glance upward, she saw Lu Xingyan descending in a loose black T-shirt and gray sweatpants, hands in his pockets, lazily making his way down.

She discreetly averted her gaze and poured another cup of tea for Lu Shan.

“Xingruo, do you like chicken?” Pei Yue’s voice came from the kitchen.

“I’m fine with anything, Aunt Pei,” Shen Xingruo replied.

Setting down the teapot, she greeted Lu Shan and then went to help Pei Yue in the kitchen.

Lu Xingyan walked to the fridge, poured himself a glass of milk, and grabbed a slice of toast. He then wandered around the living room in a circular motion, performing an act of sorts—

But nobody paid him any attention.

All he heard were calls of “RuoRuo” and “Xingruo” from one side, and even Lu Shan, in the middle of sipping his tea, got up to admire Pei Yue’s cooking.

His gaze drifted towards the kitchen, and he smirked slightly.

In truth, Pei Yue rarely cooked herself. If it weren’t for the fact that the family’s maid had gone back home for the Lunar New Year and hadn’t returned yet, it would have been rare to see her in the kitchen. Stir-fried vegetables, braised beef with potatoes, clear duck soup…

Lu Xingyan paused with his chopsticks in the bowl. None of these were his favorites.

Finally, after what seemed like ages, Pei Yue brought out a small dish of diced chicken, surprisingly without any chili peppers.

It lacked soul.

“I heard the tastes over in Huize are still relatively mild. I met your dad in Nan City last time. He used to be a big fan of spicy food. He used to down three cups of water after eating chopped chili fish head,” Pei Yue remarked, placing the dish of diced chicken in front of Shen Xingruo. “Ruo, try this.”

Lu Shan pointed and said, “This is Aunt Pei’s specialty dish. Xingruo, Uncle is benefiting from your presence today.”

Shen Xingruo smiled softly. “Thank you, Aunt Pei.”

Seeing her gentle demeanor, Pei Yue became even more attentive. “And drink more of this duck soup. It’s good for your health. Look at you, so delicate. With the pressure of your sophomore year, you need to take care of yourself first. Don’t just focus on studying…”

Before Pei Yue could finish her sentence, Shen Xingruo coughed twice.

“What’s wrong, Ruo? Are you catching a cold?” Pei Yue asked anxiously.

Lu Shan added, “The weather has been changing a lot lately. You should wear more layers.”

“Aunt Pei, Uncle Lu, I’m fine… *cough cough*… It’s just a bit itchy in my throat. Some hot water will do the trick. *cough cough*…” Shen Xingruo said, turning her head away to cover her mouth as she coughed.

“…”

Pei Yue had just called her delicate, and now she was coughing.

Lu Xingyan held his chopsticks, lost in thought for a moment. In his mind, there was the arrogance of the “white peacock” splashing water yesterday, and then there was the sight of Shen Daiyu coughing delicately before him.

“Lu Xingyan, go pour a cup of hot water.”

“No, make it warm.”

“What are you standing there for? Hurry up.”

Finally acknowledged, Lu Xingyan felt like a person again.

By the time he returned with the water, Miss Shen Daiyu had already been comforted by his overly concerned parents.

*Bang*—the glass landed heavily on the table, emitting a crisp sound. A few water droplets splattered, one landing neatly on Shen Daiyu’s hand.

Shen Daiyu softly thanked him, grasping the cup and sipping from it.

Lu Xingyan stood by the table with his hands in his pockets for a moment, then licked the back of his molars, shaking his head slightly.

Well then.

It seemed a gem from the film industry had arrived in the household.

Throughout the meal, Lu Shan and Pei Yue lavished attention on Shen Xingruo. Lu Xingyan, feeling nameless and unnoticed, finished his meal in a few bites. He had intended to head upstairs, but he paused when he heard Lu Shan and Shen Xingruo discussing her transfer.

“All the paperwork is done. Originally, the head of the grade wanted her to take a little test first, but as soon as they checked her file, they arranged her into a class without a second thought.”

Lu Xingyan looked up.

Lu Shan’s gaze shifted slightly. “What are you looking at? She’s in the same class as you. You should learn from her. She ranked in the top five in the city’s third-tier exam. She’s never fallen out of the top five since she transferred to Huize First High School. What about you? Every time you take an exam, you’re just hanging around. Your mom and I are just grateful you’re not flunking.”

During exams at Mingli School, the seating arrangement was based on previous exam scores. The higher floors had worse testing conditions, with the top floor, affectionately called the “Peak of Enlightenment,” being the worst.

Unfortunately, Lu Xingyan was a seasoned resident of the Peak of Enlightenment.

Lu Shan took a few bites of his food and continued, “School starts the day after tomorrow. I’ll check my schedule for the day after tomorrow. If I’m free, I’ll take you both to school. If not, I’ll have Lao Liu drive you. Xingruo, since you just arrived, it’s better to move into the dormitory a day early to get acquainted with your roommates.”

Lu Xingyan didn’t respond, his face clearly expressing, “I hope you don’t have any free time.”

“What’s with that expression?” Lu Shan asked.

“The expression of hoping you’ll be too busy handling your affairs and making more money,” Lu Xingyan retorted.

Lu Shan fell silent.

“I’m full,” Lu Xingyan said lazily, pushing his chair back and standing up. With his hands still in his pockets, he sauntered upstairs.

As Lu Xingyan wished, Lu Shan indeed had no free time on the day of registration.

Driver Lao Liu parked the car in the front yard and got out to help with the luggage.

Without lifting his eyes, Lu Xingyan simply settled into the car, playing with his phone and absentmindedly chewing on gum.

Outside the car, Pei Yue was still talking to Shen Xingruo, reminding her to take care of herself, to remember to call if anything happened, and to make sure she stayed warm.

Even after finishing his game, Lu Xingyan saw no one coming into the car. He lowered the window, frowned, and looked outside, his eyes full of “Is this ever going to end?”

Shen Xingruo just locked eyes with him when Pei Yue also turned to look. “By the way, you have to take good care of Xingruo at school, do you understand? She’s a girl who transferred here all alone, unfamiliar with everything. You mustn’t let anyone bully her.”

“…”

“Heh.”

Who could bully this little fairy who could strike people with an icy chill just by saying a few words?

Lu Xingyan raised the car window.

Before her eyes were obscured, Shen Xingruo could still see the mockery on his face.

Shen Xingruo had no idea what she had done to earn the dislike of this immature young master. For her, being disliked by a boy was quite rare and peculiar.

Not knowing how to interact with him yet, Shen Xingruo remained silent.

Winter hadn’t fully receded yet; there were no flowers outside, and pedestrians were still wrapped in thick coats. She cracked open the car window just a tiny bit, but as soon as the wind blew in, she heard a sudden voice beside her, “Trying to freeze me to death?”

“…”

“Sorry.”

She promptly rolled up the window again.

Silence filled the car as Shen Xingruo continued to navigate, looking for the way. When they reached the junction where they had to turn right onto a one-way street, she tactfully informed Lao Liu in advance, “Uncle Liu, I want to get off up ahead. There’s a stationery store there, and I want to buy something.”

“Sure, I’ll pull over and wait for you,” Lao Liu replied.

“Uncle Liu, you don’t need to wait. I know the way, I can walk there myself,” Shen Xingruo said.

Unexpectedly, Lu Xingyan suddenly interjected, “I’ll get off here too, Uncle Liu. Don’t turn in; there’s traffic at the Mingli School gate today.”

Shen Xingruo glanced at him.

Both of them got out of the car and stood under the trees by the roadside, the leaves above rustling in the wind.

After a moment’s thought, Shen Xingruo politely said, “Then I’ll go buy things first,” as she dragged her suitcase a few steps away.

Suddenly, Lu Xingyan called out to her, “Hey, Shen Xingruo.”

Shen Xingruo turned back.

Leaning against the tree trunk, Lu Xingyan looked at her directly with a cold demeanor. “We’re already at school, can you stop pretending?”

Chapter 2 – Guest Room

It was nearly a two-hour drive from the South City High-Speed Rail Station to the Lakeside Villa Area in the North, yet the journey was far from awkward.

Pei Yue was a warm and fashionable elder, well-versed in the latest trends. Soon after they got into the car, Shen Xingruo was pulled into a selfie session with her. After taking the photos, Pei Yue even brought out a photo editing app popular among Instagram influencers, offering tips and tricks while editing the pictures.

By the time they arrived, it was already late evening. The gentle night breeze from the Lakeside created a serene atmosphere. Looking around, the villas by the lake were low and scattered, with cobblestone paths winding through ornate iron gates. Along the way, English-style street lamps cast a warm yellow glow, reminiscent of the solitary lanterns in “Spirited Away,” bowing in greeting as people passed by.

Pei Yue was like one of those lanterns, radiating goodwill to Shen Xingru, who had arrived alone in this unfamiliar city.

Uncle Liu, the driver, helped with the luggage, while Pei Yue led Shen Xingruo into the house. The Lu family’s villa was a three-story standalone building, with a lawn, swimming pool, and a small garden outside. The interior decoration was different from what Shen Xingruo had imagined in terms of luxury; it was exquisite and warm, giving off a homely vibe.

Pei Yue led her around, both inside and outside, saying, “You can take a walk by the lake after dinner. There’s also a music hall nearby, an art center, and the Xingcheng Library moved here last year. It’s only a seven or eight-minute walk away.”

“Your room is on the third floor. I’ve already prepared it for you. Oh, and your room overlooks Lake Stars; you can open the window at night, and the natural breeze is quite comfortable. Come, let me show you your room.”

“Auntie Pei, there’s no need to go through so much trouble.”

Shen Xingruo was led upstairs, gradually realizing that things were quite different from what she had imagined. She had thought she was just visiting the Lu family for a couple of days and would move into the dormitory when school started. But now…

“Just think of it as staying in your own home. Although Mingli requires students to live on campus, there are no weekend classes for sophomores. So, from now on, after school on Fridays, I’ll have Lao Liu pick you up.” Pei Yue sighed, “I’ve always wanted a daughter. Unfortunately, I had some health issues when I gave birth, and now I’m getting older.”

After a pause, Pei Yue smiled again, “Your dad said he would send you over before the new year. I’ve been eagerly anticipating your arrival day by day. Finally, you’re here. Your Uncle Lu is busy, and Lu Xingyan isn’t very attentive. Look, during winter vacation, he went out with friends for ten days or more without a word. He only sent a message after he decided to return, expecting me to pick him up. I just ignored him.”

Lu Xingyan.

Shen Xingruo repeated the name in her mind.

Pei Yue pushed open the door, turning back to wave at her, “Come on, take a look at your room.”

Shen Xingruo walked to the doorway as instructed.

What met her eyes was a vision of soft pastel hues, dreamy in color scheme yet modest in decoration. A crystal vase adorned the table, filled with fresh and delicate lilies as if welcoming the new owner. In the shadowy corner of the room sat a white Steinway grand piano.

“No one in our family plays the piano. It used to be placed in the living room as a decoration. Your Uncle Lu specifically instructed someone to move it up here. Do you like it?”

She used to have a Steinway grand piano, and seeing one again after so long felt particularly familiar to her.

Shen Xingruo nodded, “Thank you, Aunt Pei, and thank you, Uncle Lu.”

“Don’t mention it, you’re such a polite child.” Pei Yue looked at Shen Xingruo with eyes full of affection, unable to contain her smile.

Everything Pei Yue said earlier was true. She had always wanted a daughter; after all, daughters were like close-knit sweaters, while her son… was barely a pair of long johns. Comparing her son to Shen Xingru, who was beautiful, well-mannered, and well-raised, not to mention reportedly very smart, was like comparing a down jacket to a patch of warm sunlight.

Considering that Shen Xingruo had been traveling all day, Pei Yue didn’t drag the conversation on. She just asked her to freshen up and rest early.

Shen Xingruo agreed and escorted Pei Yue to the door. It seemed that no one else from the Lu family was around. She watched Pei Yue’s figure disappear around the corner of the staircase, then leaned against the door for a moment before gently closing it.

At fifteen past ten in the evening, at the Zangling Sports Arena in Xingcheng, the “Love You” national tour concert by the popular idol singer Lin Yu, ended abruptly fifteen minutes ahead of schedule.

Lin Yu himself had already left the venue under the management team’s arrangement, leaving behind a scene of chaos and wailing inside the arena.

Burgundy glow sticks representing Lin Yu’s fanbase were thrown around the arena, torn banners and posters lay scattered on the ground, and the broken lights no longer illuminated, creating a mess.

Finally squeezing out of the arena, several boys felt a sense of relief, as if they had survived a disaster. They tilted their heads back, gasping for fresh air, yet still couldn’t escape the haunting melodies.

Chen Zhu was so angry that she tore her T-shirt with her bare hands. “I don’t want to like him anymore! I endured hunger and thirst to get VIP tickets, and now he’s proposing to another woman! Ahhh!”

The concert merchandise T-shirts she bought at the entrance were priced at eighty yuan each, and their quality was surprisingly good. Despite her efforts, she couldn’t tear them apart. Chen Zhu struggled, biting and tearing at the fabric until she finally managed to secure it with ten hairpins, her meticulously arranged natural bun now falling apart. With each sob and shake, she perfectly embodied the image of a mad rabbit.

Several other girls, also fans of Lin Yu, were similarly distraught. Holding tissues, they wiped away their tears and snot.

One girl echoed loudly, “But that woman is so mean! Why does she get to be with Lin Yu? I’m so mad!”

“Yeah! She’s even five years older than him! I’m going crazy!”

Bian He, usually quiet and honest, pushed his glasses up and muttered to Xu Chengzhou beside him, “Didn’t they praise the male lead for singing to the female lead at the concert in the movie we watched a few days ago?”

The girls collectively stomped their feet, “Shut up!”

Bian He instantly quieted down as if someone had hit the mute button on him.

Xu Chengzhou was speechless. “Seriously, are you guys ever going to stop?”

But instead of a response, he was met with an even louder chorus of “Ahhh” and “Whimper” from the group.

He couldn’t understand. “That pretty boy is barely five feet seven, with a six-pack and daring to lift his shirt, blowing kisses, and his voice is so effeminate. Do you guys have a problem in your heads?”

The final question, coming straight from the depths of his soul, seemed to reverberate with a 3D surround sound effect, freezing the air in that moment.

Several girls looked up at him, silent for three seconds, then suddenly grabbed whatever they had in their hands and started throwing them at him.

“But Mu Mu is five feet eight! Stop spreading rumors!”

“Do you even pass math, and you dare to diss our Mu Mu!”

“You’re the effeminate one, your whole family is effeminate!”

“Damn it!” Xu Chengzhou dodged the projectiles, then before he could even stand up straight, another barrage came flying at him.

Seeing these crazy girls seemingly ready to call in the Heartbroken Alliance to besiege the entire arena, Xu Chengzhou panicked. He shouted for help while ducking behind Lu Xingyan, completely devoid of the bravado he had just displayed in dissing someone else’s idol.

Lu Xingyan’s patience had worn thin from the incessant noise and being dragged around by Xu Chengzhou. He frowned and glanced ahead. A sparse breeze brushed his forehead, tousling his stray hair.

The girls abruptly stopped throwing things, sensing Lu Xingyan’s sour mood. It was like a bucket of cold water had been poured over them, sobering them up considerably.

Though the north wind blew, there was no snowfall. After a brief moment of clarity, the girls fell back into a low emotional state. Sometimes they’d get excited and diss Lin Yu’s fiancée, while other times they’d wallow in tears.

It was clear they weren’t in a suitable state to go home alone. If they did, they’d likely get a thorough scolding from their parents, and if they lost control halfway and did something drastic, like sacrificing themselves for their idol, these boys might end up in the headlines as society’s latest moral degenerates.

So Xu Chengzhou took the initiative to mediate and console them once again. With the rallying cry of “There are plenty of idols out there, why get hung up on one who’s dating?” the girls gradually calmed down and decided to join the boys for some barbecue to lift their spirits.

The night barbecue stalls were bustling with activity, with businesses worth thousands upon thousands. Draft beer bubbled and frothed, filling the air with the aroma of barbecue spices.

Lu Xingyan had little appetite and wasn’t in a good mood. He half-listened to Xu Chengzhou boasting for a while, then listened to the girls discussing whether or not to stay loyal to their idol. Sleepiness washed over him once again.

The girls’ post-breakup tenderness towards him was the perfect opportunity, which was why Xu Chengzhou had suggested the barbecue in the first place. But seeing Lu Xingyan so unenthusiastic and indifferent now, even Xu Chengzhou felt frustrated.

When Chen Zhu got chili powder in his eyes while eating beef skewers, he urged Bian He to help out. One-handed Lu Xingyan a bottle of mineral water, and the other passed him a wet tissue. But Lu Xingyan didn’t seem to catch on. Feeling a bit drowsy, he opened the bottle and took a few sips, then wiped his hands with the wet tissue.

“Thanks,” he said, showing some courtesy.

Xu Chengzhou’s eyes widened. He had misjudged. Lu Xingyan deserved to stay single for another sixty years.

They returned to Fallen Star Lake well into the night. Lu Xingyan had messaged Pei Yue earlier, promising to return tonight. But the wall clock had already struck midnight, and Lu Xingyan instinctively checked his phone.

To his surprise, there were no new messages.

He slipped on his slippers, tossed his coat onto the edge of the couch, and headed upstairs. The second floor housed a study, a gym, a multipurpose theater room, and his parents’ bedroom, all unlit and quiet.

Lu Xingyan’s room was the first on the left on the third floor. Without pausing, he made his way to his room and reached for the doorknob, his eyelids drooping with the motion.

Before he could even turn it halfway, his hand froze. There was light seeping from under the door. His gaze lingered on the faint glow for a few seconds before memories of past unpleasant encounters flooded back, prompting him to release the knob and take two steps back.

The hallway remained silent as Lu Xingyan scanned his surroundings. Eventually, torn between the lengthy torment of facing his mother’s lectures with a bowed head and the temporary comfort of slipping into a spare guest room for the night, he chose the latter. It wasn’t a hard decision; he was truly exhausted.

The guest room to the right, the largest of them all and symmetrically aligned with his room, beckoned to him. Without much thought, he walked over and pushed the door open.

A rush of cool night air greeted him, momentarily snapping him awake. The room was illuminated by a floor lamp, casting a warm, gentle glow that starkly contrasted with his memory of the guest room’s decor.

He stood frozen for a few seconds before his gaze settled on the young woman seated by the bay window. Outside, the night breeze swirled the layers of curtains, lifting the hem of the girl’s ankle-length skirt. She toyed with a lighter in her hand, its flame dancing in the wind.

Before the wind could extinguish it, *click*—the lighter snapped shut.

Their gazes finally met in midair. She didn’t seem pleased, her lips downturned in a cold frown.

Chapter 1 – High-Speed Rail

The high-speed train stopped at Huize South Station for ten minutes.

Lu Xingyan took off his noise-canceling headphones, and immediately, the snoring of the man in front of him and the sound of passengers’ luggage wheels became noticeably louder. He slumped in his seat momentarily before sitting up straighter and placing his headphones on the table. As he twisted the cap off a bottle of mineral water, he asked, “How much longer?”

“We’ve reached Huize, so about another hour,” Xu Chengzhou replied, engrossed in his game.

Chen Zhu happened to come over for a snack. She rummaged through Xu Chengzhou’s backpack and pulled out a bag of dried pork. She offered it, “Do you guys want some?”

Xu Chengzhou dodged to the side, “Auntie, I’m in a ranked match. Don’t poke me!”

Lu Xingyan didn’t respond; he just pushed the bag away, maintaining his cool demeanor.

Chen Zhu rolled her eyes and walked back to another compartment, biting into the dried pork.

Since it wasn’t a holiday, the high-speed train was relatively quiet. The new passengers had stowed their luggage, and the sound of rolling suitcase wheels faded. The man in the seat ahead seemed to wake up, and his snoring also stopped.

After finishing his water, Lu Xingyan reclined in his seat and closed his eyes to rest. He hadn’t slept well the night before and was very tired. However, his aristocratic airs flared up regardless of time, place, or situation; no matter how tired he was, he couldn’t fall asleep on the train.

When his eyes rested, his hearing seemed to sharpen. He could hear Xu Chengzhou muttering under his breath, the train doors closing, and the faint sound of silent casters rolling on the floor, moving closer and then farther away.

Shen Xingruo was taking a high-speed train for the first time to travel far. She only discovered at the last minute that Huize South Station didn’t support ID card check-in. She wasted a lot of time queuing for a ticket, but fortunately, she made it onto the train just in time.

Carriage 2, seat 7A, by the window.

Shen Xingruo checked her ticket again—

Yes, it was her seat. But a middle-aged man was already sitting there.

Shen Xingruo said, “Excuse me.”

The man didn’t move, nor did he lift his eyelids. His beer belly protruded prominently as he leaned against the seatback, his mouth slightly open, with a tuft of nose hair sticking out. His hair was greasy, clumped together, and shining.

“Uncle, this is my seat. Did you sit in the wrong place?” Shen Xingruo’s voice was somewhat cold as if laced with menthol.

Lu Xingyan opened his eyes briefly before closing them again, continuing to rest. He bent his leg and gave a casual kick forward.

Caught off guard, the man with the beer belly jerked his head to the side. The woman dressed as a white-collar worker next to him had been enduring him for a while. Seeing his head loll over, she quickly shifted to the side and tapped him with her rolled-up magazine. “Sir, wake up.”

With all this commotion, the man couldn’t pretend to sleep any longer. He wiped his face, pretending to have just woken up, and turned around, seeing Lu Xingyan leaning back in his seat, seemingly asleep. Confused, he turned back to see Shen Xingruo standing in the aisle, looking like a well-behaved student. He said impatiently, “There are other seats over there. Can’t you just sit somewhere else? Why are you so inflexible, young lady?”

“Carriage 2, seat 7A is my seat, Uncle. Let’s check our tickets.”

“What’s wrong with you, young lady?” The man with the beer belly was slightly surprised. He pointed at her, ready to lecture her, but a train attendant happened to hear the commotion and came over.

After Shen Xingruo briefly explained the situation to the attendant, she offered to show her ticket. After checking it, the attendant turned to the man with the beer belly. “Sir, could you please show your ticket and ID card?”

The attendant appeared to be in her early twenties, looking inexperienced. The man with the beer belly didn’t take her seriously and dismissed her, “I bought my ticket on my phone.”

“Then please show me your phone order.”

“My phone is dead.”

“Then your ID card?”

“I lost it.”

Their back-and-forth was getting on Xu Chengzhou’s nerves. His game, which had been going well, was now ruined. Frustrated, he tossed his phone aside and leaned back.

After a few seconds, he suddenly nudged Lu Xingyan with his elbow.

“What?” Lu Xingyan frowned, half-opening his eyes. His voice was hoarse, showing his irritation.

Xu Chengzhou leaned in and whispered, without moving his eyes, “Check out that girl. Isn’t she pretty and elegant?”

Lu Xingyan looked up.

It was early spring in February, the weather was still chilly despite the occasional warmth. The girl was wearing a beige drop-shoulder turtleneck sweater, her long hair tied low into a ponytail. Her back was slender, and the weight of her black backpack made her shoulders slump, making her look very thin. From his angle, he could only see half of her face, but her profile was quite delicate.

Before he could make any comment, Xu Chengzhou, eager to act, said, “Hey, should we help her out, maybe record a video or something?”

Lu Xingyan withdrew his gaze, smiling dismissively, “Real hero, aren’t you?”

Xu Chengzhou shot him a knowing look and was about to say more when suddenly there was a loud “bang” from up front!

Shen Xingruo had just retracted the handle of her suitcase and lifted it a few inches before dropping it back down with a clean, swift motion.

The argument between the attendant and the man with the beer belly came to an abrupt halt, and the murmuring in the carriage quieted.

Shen Xingruo’s face was expressionless. She took off her backpack and threw it onto the horizontally placed suitcase, then took out her phone and pointed the camera at the man with the beer belly. “How about this for a headline: ‘Middle-aged Man Bullies Girl for Her Seat on High-Speed Train’?”

The man was stunned for a few seconds. When he realized what was happening, his face changed, and he started yelling, “What are you filming? Stop filming! You little brat, give me that phone!”

“What kind of manners do you have? I’ll treat you the way you treat me.”

The man hadn’t expected the seemingly quiet girl to be so tough. He was infuriated and tried to push the table away to stand up and grab her phone.

Seeing him about to make a move, the attendant quickly stepped in front of Shen Xingruo. Xu Chengzhou and two other young men also hurried over to intervene.

Xu Chengzhou shouted, “What are you doing, old man? Bullying a young girl, are you?”

One of the young men chimed in, “YeAh you think you’re in the right, hogging her seat?”

In the ensuing struggle, the white-collar woman nearby screamed in panic. The man with the beer belly, just as he stood up, was shoved back into his seat. Amidst the chaos, a heavy kick came from behind, causing him to stumble forward again.

Seeing his disheveled state, Shen Xingruo’s eyes were filled with cold disdain. She kept her camera trained on him, not moving an inch.

The man was so angry his lips were trembling. He leaned back into his seat, gripping the armrest, and nodded repeatedly, saying, “Fine! Fine! You film! Go ahead and film! I’ll just sit here and not move. Let’s see how long you can keep this up, you little brat!”

The people around couldn’t help but exclaim inwardly, “Damn, can things get this shameless?”

Shen Xingruo showed no emotional change, simply gazing quietly at the beer belly in front of her—

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds.

Suddenly, she pocketed her phone and looked towards the table in front of Lu Xingyan, asking, “Excuse me, can I borrow some water?”

The bottle, already one-third empty, was quickly tossed her way.

She twisted off the cap.

“Are you leaving or not? If not, everyone else might as well stand up.”

The bottle tipped slightly, hanging directly above the beer belly.

?!

The surrounding people were all stunned.

The beer belly seemed to have undergone some major upheaval in its worldview, its face filled with disbelief. “You little brat…”

Before he could finish, the water mercilessly poured down.

An hour later, the train arrived at its final destination, Xingcheng South Station, and passengers began to disembark. Shen Xingruo pushed her suitcase while talking on the phone, heading towards the exit.

“Little beauty, have you arrived?”

Pei Yue’s voice sounded quite cheerful, lifting Shen Xingru’s mood as well. “Auntie Pei, I’ve gotten off the train.”

“Then head towards Exit B, I’ll be waiting here for you.”

“Auntie Pei, you’re here too?” She thought only the driver would be there.

“Of course, both your Uncle Lu wanted to come, but he suddenly had a meeting and couldn’t make it.”

Shen Xingruo quickly found Exit B. Meanwhile, Lu Xingyan and his group also headed towards Exit B, but with more people, they were moving slower.

“…Then the guy snapped out of it, and started yapping away, you know? Damn, I was so shocked! That girl just poured the water down without hesitation! Poured it down!” Xu Chengzhou vividly recounted the scene, gesturing and pulling at his coat to show, “Look at my clothes, just look! The water splashed all over me, and it’s not even dry yet!”

Because there were too few seats available when buying tickets, except for Lu Xingyan and Xu Chengzhou, everyone else sat in another train carriage and didn’t witness the scene at that time.

“And then what happened?”

“Then the train conductor showed up. That guy was in second class sitting in a first-class seat, and he only bought a ticket for one stop but ended up riding for six stops. Anyway, in the end, he got escorted off.” Xu Chengzhou remembered something, “Oh yeAh that girl who borrowed water from Lu Xingyan, she even gave him five bucks back.”

“Hey, Young Master Lu, why don’t you take out that five bucks and have a look…”

Lu Xingyan glanced at him with an expression that suggested he was looking at a fool, then resumed chewing his gum expressionlessly, his gaze quickly returning to his phone screen.

This incident only seemed amusing to Xu Chengzhou; the others hadn’t witnessed it firsthand, so they didn’t feel much about it and had little interest. They started interrupting each other with different topics, quickly shifting to discussing the evening concert.

Half of this group had been friends since middle school, and their circle expanded when they moved to Mingli Academy for high school.

During winter break, they spent about ten days at the seaside, mainly because a few girls wanted to attend a concert by their idol, Lin Yu. They rushed back early because of it.

Seeing a few girls’ eyes light up and hearts flutter at the mention of Lin Yu, Xu Chengzhou rolled his eyes. He didn’t bother finishing his sentence and instead went to grab Lu Xingyan’s neck, “Hey, Young Master Lu, wanna see something?”

In just a few seconds, Lu Xingyan’s phone buzzed with a WeChat notification.

Xu Chengzhou pocketed his phone and proudly leaned in, “So, what do you think? Not bad, right? Has that arty film vibe, doesn’t it?”

The scene in the photo was quite familiar—the girl standing in the aisle, coldly watching as the middle-aged man was escorted away. Her posture was impeccable, standing there like a beautiful and elegant white peacock.

Xu Zhengzhou couldn’t stop praising, “Seriously, this girl is stunning, especially her aura. I bet she’s into ballet or something. Just look at her, she’s like the epitome of a pure and elegant first love.”

“You have quite the taste,” Lu Xingyan chuckled lightly, tapping Xu Chengzhou’s head with his phone.

“What’s wrong with my taste? I’m telling you, in Mingli, she’d be a goddess-level school flower. Don’t believe me? Ask Bian He…”

The group laughed and joked for a while before finally reaching the taxi stand. Since they were a large group, they hailed three taxis. The first two taxis seated four each, leaving Lu Xingyan and Xu Zhengzhou to share one.

Just as they were about to get in, they saw Chen Zhu getting out of the front taxi, waving at them.

Xu Chengzhou immediately sensed someone meddling, stopped his motion to get into the back seat, and gestured towards Lu Xingyan, “Let’s switch, I’ll sit in the front.”

But Lu Xingyan, with earphones on, didn’t hear him. He closed the car door without a second thought and took the passenger seat.

Xu Chengzhou was exasperated. He followed suit, got into the car, and yanked the earphones off Lu Xingyan from behind, wondering, “You’re back and you still can’t make a move? If you don’t seize the opportunity at the concert tonight, I bet you’ll be single for another thirty years.”

This time around, everyone was trying to create opportunities for Lu Xingyan and Chen Zhu during the trip, but neither of them took the initiative. As a result, when they returned to Xingcheng, there was no progress between them.

Xu Chengzhou kept nagging, and Lu Xingyan, annoyed, lifted his gaze, “Could you please shut up?”

Just as Chen Zhu was getting into the car, Xu Zhengzhou couldn’t say much more. He moved to another seat, chatting with Chen Zhu cheerfully.

Lu Xingyan’s mind was elsewhere. Chen Zhu asked him a couple of questions, but his responses were perfunctory, and he quickly put his earphones back on, engrossed in his game.

Chen Zhu lowered her voice and asked, “What’s wrong with him?”

Xu Zhengzhou: “Who knows? His picky attitude is nothing new, you’ve seen it before.”

Chen Zhu: “True, last semester he was picky like a dog, and now he’s upgraded again.”

Lu Xingyan turned up the volume to the maximum, feeling an inexplicable surge of irritation. He swiped at the screen absentmindedly, feeling somewhat restless. He sent a WeChat message to Pei Yue, letting her know he’d be home tonight.

After waiting for a response for what seemed like ages, he boredly opened Xu Chengzhou’s chat interface and clicked on the photo. It was indeed as Xu Chengzhou described, with an arty vibe.

The photo froze three-quarters of the girl’s facial profile, immersed in the twilight shadows cast through the window, creating an ambiance of ambiguity.

Perhaps because she wasn’t smiling, beyond her beauty, she exuded a coldness, like fresh snow in winter, clean and chilly.

Lu Xingyan gazed at it for a while, then casually tapped to save it.

Just then, Xu Chengzhou suddenly exclaimed, “Holy crap!” and yanked out his earphones again, pointing ahead excitedly, “I think I see your family’s car, the Oulu, 088, I’m not mistaken, right? That’s your family’s car, isn’t it?”
