Chapter 323: Suspects

Jiang Shiran’s eyes suddenly widened, thinking she had misheard, and she pressed further: “Which Miss Li?”

“The Miss Li San who’s trapped in the mountains.”

“Father, are you joking? Why would we look for her?”

Jiang Tang gently ruffled Jiang Shiran’s hair: “Silly girl, Miss Li San is Physician Li’s adopted granddaughter.”

“So what? You’re my father, but I don’t have your abilities!” The more Jiang Shiran thought about it, the angrier she became, and she rolled her eyes.

Jiang Tang burst out laughing.

His daughter certainly knew how to talk, acknowledging that her father had abilities.

“Father, you’re still laughing! You know I hate that Li girl the most, yet you bring her up to annoy me!” In her anger, Jiang Shiran grabbed Jiang Tang’s beard again.

Jiang Tang said helplessly, “Let go quickly! How old are you to still be causing such trouble!”

“Hmph!” Jiang Shiran snorted coldly and turned her face away without speaking.

Jiang Tang smiled and leaned against the carriage wall to rest with his eyes closed.

When he remained silent, Jiang Shiran couldn’t help herself again. She turned back and pleaded softly: “Father, don’t sleep. Please think of a solution for me. Zhenzhen is so pitiful—I can’t just ignore her.”

Jiang Tang opened his eyes and said helplessly, “Didn’t Father already think of a solution for you?”

“What kind of solution is that? You’re just humoring me!”

“When have I ever humored you about serious matters?”

Jiang Shiran was taken aback and asked hesitantly: “Can Li San help Zhenzhen?”

“Whether she can help or not, Father can’t guarantee, but that little girl injured her face at the time, yet didn’t end up with any scars.”

“Right, I remember now.” Jiang Shiran murmured, but she still didn’t want to believe that a girl younger than herself would know any medical skills. She clapped her hands: “She must have some miraculous elixir from Physician Li!”

Upon hearing the word “elixir,” Jiang Tang’s temple veins twitched, and he felt like throwing away the two “immortal pills” he carried in his chest.

“Father, when will the mountain roads be passable?”

“A few more days yet. That debris isn’t easy to clear.”

“How annoying! Li San is purely a jinx—wherever she goes, trouble follows.”

“Ran Ran, if possible, Father hopes you could become friends with Miss Li.”

“Impossible!” Jiang Shiran declared loudly. “She even slapped me! I’ve been merciful by not taking a whip to her face—how could I possibly be friends with her?”

Knowing his daughter’s stubborn temperament well, Jiang Tang sighed and said no more.

The Great Fortune Temple stood majestic and solemn in the night, but it lacked its usual peaceful tranquility, with the entire temple brilliantly lit.

A group of monks who had gone out to search for Master Wumei’s whereabouts returned to the temple under moonlight.

Besides this group of monks, there were also two additional young people—a man and a woman—both bound tightly and pushed before the abbot of Great Fortune Temple.

“Abbot, we disciples discovered these two in an old house deep in the mountains. Their behavior was extremely suspicious.”

The abbot glanced at the two and asked: “What was suspicious about them?”

“This man’s clothing is identical in material and style to what the killer who died in Reflection Shadow Convent today was wearing. We also found layout diagrams of both Great Fortune Temple and Reflection Shadow Convent in that old house.” The lead monk handed a piece of animal hide to the abbot.

The abbot unfolded the hide and looked at it, his expression darkening slightly: “Amitabha, what relationship do you two have with the killer who murdered the nuns of Reflection Shadow Convent?”

The young man hung his head, his entire body weight pressing on the monk supporting him, showing no reaction to the abbot’s question.

The young woman, however, shouted: “You confused old monks, release us immediately! How many times must we say it—we didn’t kill anyone, and we don’t know any killer! I’m the personal maid of Third Miss from the residence of Minister Li of the Hanlin Academy, and he’s Third Miss’s driver. You’ve arrested the wrong people!”

“Abbot, the young lady with Marquis Guanjun is indeed Miss Li San.” A monk whispered in the abbot’s ear as a reminder.

“The female benefactor is Miss Li San’s maid?”

“Yes! I’ve talked my mouth dry and these monks still won’t believe me. If you don’t believe it either, you can call little Master Xuanjing—he knows me!”

“Go invite Marquis Guanjun and Miss Li San over,” the abbot instructed a monk in a low voice.

“Abbot, please quickly order someone to untie him. He’s injured, and with all this rough treatment from you people, he can barely hold on!” Binglu was extremely anxious.

If Chenguang hadn’t been protecting her, he wouldn’t have been so severely injured. At first, she thought he was dying, but after nursing him for several days, thank heavens, he finally showed improvement. Who knew these stinking monks would burst in?

“Please remain calm, benefactor.”

“Remain calm, remain calm—if you don’t let him rest properly and something happens to him, will you take responsibility?”

“The benefactor should first prove your innocence before saying anything else,” a middle-aged monk said sternly.

This monk had long, dark eyebrows and upturned eyes. Unlike the abbot’s kind and gentle appearance, he looked rather severe.

Binglu wasn’t intimidated at all and rolled her eyes: “The abbot hasn’t even spoken yet—what right do you have to slander people?”

“Amitabha, if the benefactor continues with such sharp words, this humble monk will have to escort you to the Discipline Hall first.”

“On what grounds? We’re not monks of Great Fortune Temple!”

The middle-aged monk said sternly, “Because Master Wumei’s whereabouts are unknown, and all the nuns of Reflection Shadow Convent have been killed!”

Binglu sneered: “What does that have to do with us? Great Fortune Temple and Reflection Shadow Convent are so close to each other, yet you couldn’t protect the masters and couldn’t find the killer, so you ran into the deep mountains to arrest us?”

At these words, many monks lowered their heads in shame.

The middle-aged monk shouted: “Take them to the Discipline Hall!”

“Junior brother, don’t be hasty—”

“Abbot, surely you don’t intend to shield them?”

“Amitabha, junior brother, you’ve gone too far with those words.” The abbot’s expression was somewhat unpleasant.

He was already old, while his junior brother, who served as the head seat, was in his prime. However, as a temple at the foot of the Son of Heaven, Great Fortune Temple had been peaceful all these years. This incident was indeed an opportunity to establish authority—no wonder junior brother couldn’t contain himself.

“Abbot.” A calm young man’s voice came through the night.

Binglu turned her head and couldn’t help but be overjoyed: “Miss, Miss, it’s this servant!”

While shouting, she struggled: “Let me go, you stinking monks!”

“Binglu?” Qiao Zhao and Shao Mingyuan exchanged glances, then quickly walked over.

“Binglu, how are you here? Where’s Chenguang?” After Qiao Zhao asked, she followed Binglu’s gaze and couldn’t help but be startled. “Chenguang?”

She reached out to grab Chenguang’s wrist, but was blocked by the middle-aged monk: “Benefactor, please don’t act rashly. They are suspects!”

“Suspects?” Qiao Zhao’s expression turned slightly cold. “Whether they’re suspects or not can be discussed later. Right now, I need to examine him.”

The middle-aged monk sneered: “These two suspects—one claims to be the benefactor’s maid, one claims to be the benefactor’s driver. Shouldn’t the benefactor give us all an explanation?”
