Chapter 5: The Doctor

“I…” White-Lab-Coat appeared even calmer than the others. Even the corpse on the table surface couldn’t affect him. “My name is Zhao Haibo. I’m a doctor. You should be able to tell from my attire.”

He reached out to tug at his dirty white lab coat and continued, “Before coming here, I was performing surgery on a lady. That lady had an intraventricular tumor. The tumor was growing rapidly, continuously enlarging over the past half year. It had already caused mild hydrocephalus. If we didn’t perform a craniotomy to deal with it quickly, her life would be in danger.”

“I chose a frontal lobe surgical approach, directly puncturing to the ventricle under CT guidance. Actually, each time this type of surgery is performed, it’s accompanied by considerable risk. But that lady, in order to accompany her young son long-term, chose to take the risk.”

“Generally speaking, to guarantee environmental stability, the operating room cannot even have the slightest breeze. But no one expected something more powerful than wind to arrive.”

“When the earthquake came, I had just removed that lady’s skull bone and was cutting the dura mater. If a problem occurred at this step, it could easily cause brain contusion and leave devastating sequelae.”

“I made an immediate decision to terminate the surgery and temporarily cover the lady’s skull bone back. Otherwise, in an environment with dust flying everywhere, that lady’s life would be at risk.”

“But I didn’t expect this step to be more difficult than I imagined. I couldn’t even stand steadily—how could I possibly accurately cover back a small piece of skull bone?”

“The nurse beside me knocked me all over the place. Everyone was unable to maintain balance. In my panic, I could only first cover that lady’s head with a sterile sheet, then immediately turn around to organize everyone to evacuate. But at this moment, I was hit in the leg by a small medical cart and fell to the ground.”

“Before I could stand up again, the ceiling of the operating room directly cracked open. I immediately lost consciousness.”

After everyone finished listening to the doctor’s narration, their expressions were all rather unnatural.

In this story, he had used many medical terms.

If even one word among these terms was fabricated, no one would be able to identify it.

“Doctor Zhao, where are you from?” the muscular man asked casually.

“I don’t feel obligated to answer your question,” Doctor Zhao replied. “My story is already finished.”

The muscular man opened his mouth but said nothing.

“Is, is it my turn?” A bespectacled male student’s eyes flickered for a moment as he spoke. “My name is Han Yimo. I’m a…”

“Wait.” Goat Head suddenly spoke up and interrupted Han Yimo’s statement.

This action startled Han Yimo. He turned around, not understanding what was happening.

“What, what’s wrong?”

“It’s ‘halftime break’ now,” Goat Head said with a grin. “We’ll take a twenty-minute break.”

Everyone was somewhat at a loss.

At a time like this, there was actually a “halftime break”?

Qi Xia glanced at the clock in the center of the table. From waking up until now, half an hour had passed.

It was now twelve-thirty.

“In other words, this ‘break’ is mandatory,” Qi Xia silently thought to himself. “When it reaches twelve-thirty, regardless of who the narrator is, there will be a mandatory twenty-minute break…”

But the game had only been going on for thirty minutes. Now the break alone would be twenty minutes?

Qi Xia furrowed his brow. He knew this wasn’t something he needed to consider.

The organizer of this game was a lunatic to begin with. There was no need to think about it using a normal person’s reasoning.

So he could only brainwash himself over and over in his mind.

“My name is Li Ming. I’m from Shandong.”

Only by instilling this phrase into himself countless times could he blurt it out naturally when it was his turn to narrate.

Everyone waited quietly with difficulty written on their faces.

It was called “halftime break,” but the atmosphere among everyone became even more oppressive.

“Excuse me… can we talk?” the muscular man asked Goat Head.

“Oh, of course. You’re on free time now. I have no right to interfere.”

The muscular man nodded, then looked again toward Doctor Zhao. “Doctor Zhao, where exactly are you from?”

Doctor Zhao’s expression darkened. “I’m saying, you seem to have been very dissatisfied with me from the start. Why must I tell you where I’m from?”

“Don’t misunderstand. I mean no ill will,” the muscular man said in a steady voice. “The more you say, the stronger your authenticity. Since everyone has mentioned their hometown, there’s no need for you to hide it, right?”

“The more you say, the stronger your authenticity?” The doctor shook his head noncommittally. “I only know ‘the more you say, the more mistakes you make.’ If the rules are absolute, my current narration has no problems whatsoever. Moreover, I don’t trust any of you.”

“That’s somewhat biased,” the muscular man said. “There are nine people present in total. Only one is an enemy. If you’re willing to cooperate with everyone, we can work together to expose that liar. Now, the more you hide, the more suspicious you become. I’ve already asked you twice. Are you still going to hide?”

The muscular man appeared very skilled at interrogation. With just a few sentences, he had forced Doctor Zhao into a logical dead end.

His words were very clear in meaning.

Only “The Liar” didn’t need to trust others, after all, he knew his own identity.

If the doctor continued to hide things now, he would instead become the target of public criticism.

But how could someone who became a neurosurgeon be an ordinary person? He snorted coldly and asked, “Then you answer me first—who are you? What do you do?”

“Me?” The muscular man hadn’t expected the doctor to suddenly turn the tables. His expression was somewhat unnatural.

“That’s right. Since after my narration you’re interrogating me relentlessly, then I can also ask you before your narration.” Doctor Zhao smiled. “That’s fair, isn’t it?”

The muscular man thought for a moment, then nodded and said, “You’re right. I have nothing to hide. My name is Li Shangwu. I’m a criminal police officer.”

As soon as these words were spoken, everyone looked toward him.

At this moment, the two words “criminal police” gave everyone an unimaginable sense of security.

“You’re a police officer?!” The doctor was stunned.

No wonder from the very beginning he felt this man was probing for something. He was also the first person to propose “letting everyone survive.” Perhaps he truly wanted to save everyone and get them out.

The doctor’s attitude clearly improved considerably. “If that’s the case, then I apologize for my earlier attitude. I’m from Jiangsu.”

At this moment, Flower-Arm Man Qiao Jiajin’s expression looked rather unpleasant. “I say, Doctor Zhao, do you want to trust this Officer Li?”

“Hm?” Doctor Zhao looked at Qiao Jiajin with confusion. “What do you want to say?”

Qiao Jiajin tapped the table with his finger and said flatly, “Right now isn’t ‘narration time.’ In other words… right now, everyone can lie.”
