An He Zhuan: Act Fourteen – Chapter 5

“Divine Physician, why are you here?” Su Muyu was startled.

Bai Hehuai turned to face Tang Lingkui: “I received a distress call from my Medicine King nephew who’s also trapped here in the Tang Clan. Hey, you’re from the Tang Clan, right? Tell me where he is?”

Tang Lingkui gave a bitter laugh: “How interesting. Why do you people think I’ll answer whatever you ask? In your current situation, do you think you can leave here alive?”

“Poisoned?” Bai Hehuai turned to ask Su Muyu.

Su Muyu nodded: “Those Medicine Men seemed to carry deadly poison. I didn’t know—when I killed them, I was touched by a drop of blood and was poisoned.”

“How could Medicine Men carry poison?” Bai Hehuai frowned slightly, grabbing Su Muyu’s wrist. After a moment’s thought, he said, “Did something happen to Miss Xuewi?”

Su Muyu immediately understood: “She was taken by Ghost Doctor Yeya earlier.”

“As I suspected. My expelled little nephew may be morally corrupt, but he’s brilliant. With an almost perfect Poison Person in his hands, he could indeed combine it with Medicine Man techniques. This poison isn’t easy to cure, but it’s far simpler than Snow-Fallen Plum Blossom. Here.” Bai Hehuai handed Su Muyu a porcelain bottle. “Take one pill. I’ll cure you properly once we leave this place.”

“Thank you, Divine Physician.” Su Muyu nodded slightly, then suddenly flicked his left hand, catching a Zhuyan mini-arrow as he withdrew it.

Tang Lingkui snorted coldly and leaped out the window. Already severely wounded, if Su Muyu could counteract the poison, he alone wouldn’t be able to handle him anymore.

Mu Yumo finally managed to remove her hand from Tang Lianyue’s shoulder. She hurriedly asked: “Divine Physician Bai, can you save Tang Lianyue?”

Bai Hehuai gently rubbed his forehead: “You’re supposed to be the experts, yet I’m just a doctor. How did I end up seeming like the most capable one here?”

“Can you save him, Divine Physician Bai? The Tang Clan will soon surround this place—time is critical.” Su Muyu took the pill and circulated his qi to suppress the poison.

“Ice Moon Silkworm.” Bai Hehuai surveyed the scene, quickly determining the cause of everything. He stroked his chin. “But this isn’t poison… how to cure it, how to cure it… Ice Moon Silkworm—I’ve got it!”

“How?” Mu Yumo asked urgently.

“Silkworms’ natural enemy is spiders.” Bai Hehuai glanced at Mu Yumo. “Spiders—isn’t that your specialty, Sister?”

Mu Yumo had a sudden realization: “No wonder the Huowen Spiders could suppress the frost energy earlier. It wasn’t just their fire nature, but because spiders are silkworms’ natural enemy.”

“Right, but Huowen Spiders aren’t enough—they’re too common,” Bai Hehuai shook his head. “We need a Tianhai Flame Spider. Do you have one?”

Mu Yumo was taken aback: “Tianhai Flame Spider? That’s the Heaven Fire Sect’s sacred creature—how would I have one?”

“True.” Bai Hehuai nodded. “Then let’s try if Ah Huo works. Snakes eat silkworms, right?” He directed the last part to Su Muyu.

Su Muyu considered: “Probably. But what’s Ah Huo?”

“Phoenix Fire Snake.” Bai Hehuai took out a small red bottle and opened the stopper. A bright red head peeked out. “This is Ah Huo.”

Su Muyu was surprised: “Divine Physician likes keeping snakes?”

“We of the Wen family raise the Five Poisons from childhood. Some have all five, but I just prefer keeping little snakes.” Bai Hehuai reached into the bottle, pulling out the small redhead. “Ah Huo isn’t as obedient as Little Qing. Knows nothing good comes from being called out, doesn’t want to work anymore.”

Ah Huo flicked its tongue, its body trembling and turning even redder.

“That’s better, now work.” Bai Hehuai placed Ah Huo on Tang Lianyue. The snake immediately writhed, appearing to be in pain. It looked up at Bai Hehuai, but he waggled a finger, and it lowered its head, slowly crawling across Tang Lianyue’s body.

Su Muyu exhaled: “The room seems less cold than before.”

Mu Yumo nodded: “And it’s gradually warming up.”

“With a Tianhai Flame Spider, Tang Lianyue would be normal by now. Though Ah Huo is a precious fire-attribute snake, it can’t compare to the Ice Moon Silkworm or Tianhai Flame Spider. Using its fire to dispel this cold will take time,” Bai Hehuai explained.

“Unfortunately, you won’t have that time.” Tang Lingkui’s voice rang out again. Everyone looked up to see Tang Lingkui with Tang Lingluo and seven or eight black-clothed figures landing before them.

“Young Divine Physician, how long until Lianyue returns to normal?” Mu Yumo whispered.

“At least two incense sticks’ worth of time, but even then, he might not regain consciousness,” Bai Hehuai replied.

“Two incense sticks,” Su Muyu said gravely. “Understood.”

“Divine Physician, focus on saving him,” Mu Yumo’s expression had lightened considerably. “The killing—that’s our job!”

“Attack!” Tang Lingluo waved, and the eight black-robed figures leaped forward.

“Be careful of these Medicine Men—they all carry deadly poison,” Su Muyu raised his sword, immediately forcing back three Medicine Men.

“Don’t worry, the antidote pill I gave you will prevent their poison from affecting you. Sister Mu, take one too.” Bai Hehuai tossed out a pill.

Mu Yumo caught and swallowed it: “Having a Divine Physician watching our backs is truly reassuring.”

“Kill that woman,” Tang Lingkui commanded softly.

Tang Lingluo leaped forward, attacking Bai Hehuai. Su Muyu turned to help but was blocked by the Zhankui blade. Tang Lingluo struck at Bai Hehuai with a palm strike, but Bai Hehuai’s footwork changed rapidly, evading the first strike.

“Su Clan’s Ghost Shadow Steps!” Tang Lingluo said gravely.

“Don’t underestimate me too much.” Bai Hehuai retreated three steps. “Kill me? That easily?”

“It’s not that difficult.” Tang Lingluo leaped again, pressing Bai Hehuai harder, moving even faster this time. Bai Hehuai couldn’t dodge completely and was forced to meet the palm strike, stumbling back over a dozen steps before stopping.

Tang Lingluo withdrew his palm, seemingly satisfied with landing the hit. He smiled: “You’re poisoned.”

Bai Hehuai brushed off the frost on his clothes, shaking his head with a sigh: “No. You’re the one who’s poisoned.”
