An He Zhuan: Act Ten – Chapter 6

Su Muyu looked at the spear and asked, “May I know who you are, brother?”

“Lu Yudai, chief disciple under Wushuang City’s Lord Song Yanhui,” the young man declared, brandishing his spear with impressive vigor.

Su Muyu was taken aback and asked, “Lord Song is a sword grandmaster, so why does his chief disciple use a spear?”

Lu Yudai’s brow furrowed, and his followers’ faces instantly darkened. He snapped, “Are you questioning me?”

Su Muyu shook his head. “I’m merely curious. I’ve long admired Wushuang City’s sword art. Years ago, Wushuang City was the premier sect in the martial world, claiming mastery of all martial arts. Later, a Wujian City appeared, attempting to claim supremacy in swordsmanship from Wushuang, but they vanished from the martial world within a few years.”

Lu Yudai sneered, “Mere Wujian City, with their self-proclaimed ‘Sword God’ of a lord – nothing but a clown.”

“Oh?” Su Muyu placed his hand on his sword hilt. “But you still haven’t answered why you don’t practice the sword.”

“Doesn’t Xueyue City have their one-of-a-kind Spear Immortal? Well, I’ll master the spear, and in eight or ten years, he won’t be so unique anymore!” Lu Yudai declared proudly.

The Wushuang City disciples behind him cheered, “Senior Brother has true spirit!”

“Stop changing the subject, I’m here to teach you a lesson!” Lu Yudai suddenly remembered his purpose.

Su Muyu sighed softly. “I’m many years your senior. By generational standing, you could call me uncle. From Tianxia House to here, I’ve been thoroughly disappointed with Wushuang City – so disappointed that I wish to leave now.”

“You won’t learn without a lesson!” Lu Yudai swung his spear down at Su Muyu.

Su Muyu dodged sideways, his hand brushing lightly over his sword hilt before shaking his head. “I don’t think you’re worthy of this sword.”

Lu Yudai’s spear missed, and he was shocked that this seemingly fragile man could move so swiftly. Hearing those words kindled his anger further, and he changed his spear technique, launching three consecutive strikes at Su Muyu’s vital points.

“The Heaven’s Barrier Spear!” someone in the crowd exclaimed. “Senior Brother, no!”

The Heaven’s Barrier Spear technique was well-known in the martial world, famous for its fierce and dominating style. It was said to contain thirty-six moves, each designed to kill, leaving opponents no room to escape. Because of this, it was rarely used in friendly matches, as accidents could easily turn fatal. For them, Su Muyu was merely an outside visitor conducting business in Wushuang City – at most, they’d had a verbal dispute. A death would be hard to explain away.

But it was too late. Su Muyu dodged the first two strikes, but the third spear thrust was about to pierce his chest.

Lu Yudai realized his mistake and tried to pull back, but it was too late. At that moment, Su Muyu moved, catching the spear’s tip between two fingers.

A resonating “zheng” rang out, causing everyone present to cover their ears.

Lu Yudai caught his breath, cold sweat drenching his back. He stared in shock – this man had caught his spear tip with just two fingers?

“I’ve seen the Spear Immortal and his spear technique. Your spear…” Su Muyu flicked his fingers, causing the entire spear to violently vibrate. Lu Yudai’s grip faltered, his palm split open, and the spear flew from his hands into Su Muyu’s grasp. Su Muyu whirled the spear in a flourish, “Isn’t worthy to polish his shoes!”

Normally such words would have enraged Lu Yudai, but now, faced with such overwhelming skill, he could only feel terror.

Su Muyu, who typically remained unmoved by others’ words, spoke with rare mockery and disdain. Perhaps Lu Yudai’s earlier comments about Wujian City had angered him, or perhaps he was deliberately provoking Lu Yudai. After dodging the spear, he looked up at the sky and suddenly closed his eyes.

Then he began to dance with the spear.

Sand and stones whirled.

Birds took flight in panic.

In Su Muyu’s mind, he recalled when the Demon Sect invaded from the east, how Sikong Changfeng charged onto the battlefield with his spear. His spear force had been overwhelming, shocking all creation and moving heaven and earth. As his spear cut through the sky, its whistle resembled a dragon’s roar – it was the legendary invincible technique: the Dragon’s Awakening.

Now Su Muyu recreated the Dragon’s Awakening, executing it up to the twelfth form, forcing Lu Yudai to repeatedly retreat. When others rushed to help, they were all sent flying. Just as he was about to execute the thirteenth form to take Lu Yudai’s life, Su Muyu finally stopped.

The spear rested against Lu Yudai’s brow. As Song Yanhui’s chief disciple, he still possessed some courage – though frightened, he managed to remain standing, merely swallowing nervously.

“That’s all I remember,” Su Muyu said softly. The Dragon’s Awakening contained thirty-three forms in total – mastering them all would make one an unmatched spear wielder in the world. Su Muyu had only glimpsed it from afar on the battlefield, yet remembered thirteen forms – a testament to his exceptional talent.

“This is… the Spear Immortal’s Dragon’s Awakening,” Lu Yudai showed some knowledge.

“I’m not skilled with the spear. These thirteen forms – I have their shape but not their essence,” Su Muyu shook his head. “If the Spear Immortal had struck, you would have died on the first move.”

“Who are you?” Lu Yudai realized that someone who knew the Spear Immortal and could perform the Dragon’s Awakening couldn’t be an ordinary martial artist.

“No clan disciple – I merely had the honor of standing with the Spear Immortal against the Demon Sect years ago.” Su Muyu withdrew the spear and planted it firmly in the ground. “May I leave now?”

Hearing that his opponent had fought against the Demon Sect’s invasion, Lu Yudai dared not cause further trouble. He cupped his fists and said, “Yudai was discourteous! Please proceed, sir.”

“What would have happened had I lost today?” Su Muyu mounted his horse and cracked his whip. “I know that if I were at Xueyue City now, I’d be watching the snow on Cang Mountain while drinking Wind, Flowers, Snow, and Moon. A truly peerless sect should have a truly peerless bearing.”

After Su Muyu left, Lu Yudai remained silent for a long while before reaching to pull out the spear planted in the ground.

But as the spear left the earth, it instantly shattered into seven or eight pieces, falling to the ground.

An ordinary spear, after all, was too weak to withstand thirteen forms of the Dragon’s Awakening.

“That man…” Lu Yudai exhaled softly, “was terrifying.”
