Chapter 17: Assassination Attempt!

A dark shadow passed overhead, making her whole body tense up. Instinctively, she wanted to give chase.

However, even though her mind was willing, with her physical abilities, pursuing them would likely only result in her silencing. Taking a deep breath, Feng Yue looked around. There were many people downstairs, while the third-floor doors were all tightly shut, with no one in the hallway.

That meant the safest place was by Yin Gezhi’s side!

Lifting her skirts, she ran “thump thump thump” back to her room. Feng Yue kicked open the door and shouted: “Sir! There’s an assassin!”

Inside the room, Yin Gezhi had his hand around the black-clothed assassin’s throat, crushing it like a rag doll, his eyes sinister: “I noticed.”

Feng Yue: “…”

How fast! She’d only taken a few steps to run here, yet the assassin had already struck. More terrifying still, it seemed he had just attacked and was immediately strangled by Yin Gezhi.

Simple and brutal – no weapons, just reached out and strangled him!

Unconsciously touching her neck, she suddenly felt that Yin Gezhi had been quite gentle with her – he hadn’t used much force when grabbing her throat. If he’d used his real strength, she would’ve been choked purple and bleeding from all seven orifices.

Swallowing hard, Feng Yue looked at him with fear: “Sir… you… this…”

He killed someone!

Coldly snorting, Yin Gezhi tossed the corpse aside and glanced at her: “Are you afraid?”

Not really, but she had to act afraid! Feng Yue trembled, shaking like she had a stroke, her eyes full of terror: “This servant still needs to sleep in this room…”

As if hearing something, Yin Gezhi tilted his head and paused, frowning slightly. He cursed under his breath, then said: “Would you rather stay here and die, or come out with me to look at the moon?”

Was that even a question? Feng Yue pounced into his arms, batting her eyes coquettishly: “Sir, save me!”

Giving her a sideways glance, Yin Gezhi grabbed her waist, turned, and kicked open the window, leaping from Menghou Tower’s third floor directly onto the roof of the building opposite.

Was he a part cat? Holding tight to him, Feng Yue was genuinely nervous, afraid that he might use too much force and crash through someone’s roof, leaving them both in a mess.

But her worries were unnecessary. Even while carrying her, Yin Gezhi moved as lightly as a swallow, stepping from one rooftop to another, gracefully traversing the quiet nighttime Bu Yin City, finally stopping atop the city’s highest building – the Wangxiang Tower.

“Were you coming out to look at the moon?” Trembling as she looked at their location, Feng Yue nearly howled: “It’s so high!”

“Get down,” Yin Gezhi said expressionlessly.

Sucking in a cold breath, Feng Yue burst into tears with a “wah”: “Sir, we have no grudges recently! Why would you carry this servant up here just to make me jump from Wangxiang Tower? If my service hasn’t been satisfactory, you can tell Madam Jin, that this servant will improve! There’s no need to use such methods…”

“You’re too noisy!” Covering her mouth in disgust, Yin Gezhi said darkly: “I meant to get down from me!”

The night breeze gently blew as the black-clothed man stood straight on the roof, with the red-clothed woman wrapped around him, using both arms and legs like an octopus clinging to him.

Staring at him blankly, Feng Yue blew a snot bubble that went “pop,” slightly spattering his clothes.

Yin Gezhi almost chopped her off right then!

“Calm down, calm down!” Quickly releasing him and crouching on the roof ridge, Feng Yue pulled out a handkerchief to wipe her tears and blow her nose.

The man beside her watched with extreme disgust, unable to comprehend: “When other women cry, they only have tears. Why do you have not too?”

Throwing away the handkerchief with an eye roll, Feng Yue said: “Everyone has snot when they cry. Some ladies just want to look tragic and beautiful, so they wipe it away. But when you’re truly sad and scared, who cares about crying beautifully?”

Yin Gezhi frowned, his face full of incomprehension. But before he could understand, the sound of objects cutting through the air came from all directions. Feng Yue was so scared she immediately flattened herself against the tiles.

Yin Gezhi was quite satisfied with her non-interfering behavior. He dodged the hidden weapons while pulling the golden hairpin from her head to block a sword aimed at his face.

With a “ding,” the small golden hairpin met the weapon, causing the black-clothed assassin’s hands to go numb. Fear flashed in the assassin’s pupils as he stepped back several paces to stand on the eaves, hesitating.

Watching this, Feng Yue couldn’t help muttering: “If an assassin has so little confidence, why even try to kill anyone?”

Hearing this, the assassin glared at her fiercely and charged Yin Gezhi with his sword! The latter moved nimbly, calmly avoiding the attacks while staring directly into the assassin’s eyes.

Intimidated by this presence, the assassin’s gaze became chaotic. He quickly revealed an opening, and with his stance weakened, Yin Gezhi swept his legs, sending him rolling off Wangxiang Tower.

The sound of tiles and human flesh crashing down exploded below. Yin Gezhi dusted off his robes and said arrogantly: “Either all come at once, or just rest. Coming one by one like this, you might as well not come at all!”

Look at that – when you’re skilled enough, you can dare to challenge a whole group alone! If she were an assassin hearing those words, she’d just give up and go home to sleep. But those hidden people seemed to have strong principles. Provoked by his words, ten people suddenly appeared with a “swoosh,” silently standing around the eaves.

“Such arrogant words,” the lead assassin finally spoke, seemingly enraged, his knife trembling: “Brothers, attack! Turn these two into meat paste!”

Hmm, meat paste.

Hmm? Wait… turn these TWO into meat paste? Feng Yue’s eyes widened as she looked at Yin Gezhi and then down at herself, unable to hold back her roar: “What does this have to do with me?! He’s the one who talked big, just mince him! Why include me?!”

“Shut up!” With a low shout, Yin Gezhi pulled two more hairpins from her hair and threw them like weapons at the assassins’ foreheads.

Chaos erupted, and Feng Yue had nowhere to hide, only finding momentary peace at Yin Gezhi’s feet.

His eyes tinged slightly red, Yin Gezhi was clearly getting excited. He moved freely among the crowd, playing with them as he fought, first disarming their swords and throwing them off the roof, then swaggering among the assassins with an attitude that seemed to say “Come and get me if you can.”

Feng Yue watched the battle while covering her head, thinking that if she were an assassin, she’d also be infuriated by this bastard – not only couldn’t they beat him, but they had to endure being toyed with!

The assassins were indeed enraged. One black-clothed figure standing on the back eaves angrily raised his sleeve, aiming at Yin Gezhi’s back.

Her pupils contracting, Feng Yue instinctively rose and threw herself against Yin Gezhi’s back, shouting: “Look out!”

The sound was deafening, waking everyone in Wangxiang Tower. The shout left Yin Gezhi’s head ringing, but he still managed to dodge the sleeve arrow by turning sideways. He frowned and looked back.

Red gauze wrapped in fragrance seemed particularly enchanting in the night. Her stiff arm was choking his neck – honestly, it was quite uncomfortable, and he could barely breathe. But the back was the most vulnerable spot in battle, and somehow, having her embrace it made him feel oddly secure.

“Were you trying to protect me?”

His tone was heavily sarcastic. Hearing it, Feng Yue pursed her lips: “No, this servant was just dodging arrows. Since I couldn’t dodge in time, clinging to your back seemed safest.”

What unnecessary concern! With Yin Gezhi’s vigilant nature, forget sleeve arrows – he could dodge even the finest needles shot at his back.

With a slightly embarrassed blush, Feng Yue buried her head against his back, honestly disguising herself as a bundle.

The assassins in front were tensely watching Yin Gezhi when they suddenly seemed to see him smile, frightening the younger assassins so much they almost fell from the eaves.

“Boss,” even the braver assassins became unsettled seeing Yin Gezhi’s expression: “Maybe we should retreat first? This doesn’t look good…”

“What are you afraid of!” The lead assassin tried to stay calm, but after another glance at Yin Gezhi’s face in the moonlight, which looked like the King of Hell himself, he finally couldn’t hold his ground. Trembling, he said: “Even if we’re not afraid, we need to keep our brothers alive… Retreat!”

With several “swoosh” sounds, they departed as uniformly as they had arrived.

The surroundings grew quiet. Feng Yue opened one eye to look around, and seeing it was safe, finally stretched out her neck and sighed in relief: “How frightening!”

Yin Gezhi shook his back as if trying to shake her off, but the person behind him was like Mount Tai – completely immovable.

“Hey,” he frowned: “You’re choking me.”

“Oh.” Releasing him and standing up, Feng Yue looked at her hairpins with distress, prying open this lord’s hand to retrieve them, wiping them clean before putting them back in her hair: “So sir has provoked assassins?”

With his back finally free, the night wind felt quite cool. Yin Gezhi narrowed his eyes: “I didn’t provoke trouble. They’re just bored and determined to take my life.”

In the Wu Kingdom’s conflict with Wei, there had always been two voices in the Wu court – one advocating maintaining the status quo, the other pushing to attack Wei again and completely incorporating it into Wu territory.

Naturally, the former voice dominated the court, but those with ulterior motives would naturally try various ways to assassinate him, hoping to provoke a war between the two countries and achieve their goal of expanding Wu’s territory.

“This is too dangerous for you,” Feng Yue frowned. “Doesn’t anyone protect you? Where’s that young man who was with you before?”

Protect him? Yin Gezhi lowered his eyes: “I don’t need protection.”

Long removed from the battlefield, having people come to let him smell the scent of blood wasn’t bad. These deaths wouldn’t even be counted as murders – how convenient.

Giving him a deep look, Feng Yue sat on the eaves and started being unreasonable: “This servant won’t care about anything else, but sir, you threw away two of my hairpins, killed someone in my room, and made me witness such a frightening scene – you must compensate me! My poor little heart was so scared it almost jumped out of my throat, boo hoo hoo.”

This woman…

Turning to look at her, Yin Gezhi’s expression was complex.
