Chapter 1301: Extra Story: Du and Fu 27 (Bonus Update for Little Dian Dian Jiang)

“I think we should find food first.”

Du Lai held the opposite opinion.

“We’ve barely eaten anything for two days. Just relying on these fruits can only supplement vitamins and a small amount of carbohydrates. Since we can make fire now, we should go catch some shrimp, crab, and shellfish to replenish protein and nutrients for our bodies. Otherwise, our physical condition will keep deteriorating.”

Fu Miaoxue furrowed her brow and looked at him quietly.

A few seconds later, she said: “It sounds very reasonable, but somehow I feel like you’re deliberately contradicting me?”

Du Lai smiled slightly. “We can split up. You think we should set up the tent, so you go set up the tent. As for me, I’ll go find food.”

“I’m a woman, and you want me to do the physical labor of pitching a tent?!” Fu Miaoxue was displeased. She felt Du Lai should stay and help her.

Du Lai said with a light laugh: “Aren’t you the boss? Of course the most important tasks have to be done by you.”

Fu Miaoxue heard this and narrowed her eyes slightly, her gaze turning a little cold. “…You dare mock me?”

“How would I dare mock the granddaughter of Fu Lisheng.” Du Lai replied lazily. “Isn’t it just that I’m… sick and can’t do physical labor?”

Fu Miaoxue: “…”

She thought for a moment, then stood up with a cold expression and said: “Fine then. I’ll go set up the tent, you go find food. Get moving.”

With that, she turned and walked out in displeasure.

Du Lai watched the young mistress’s retreating figure — lush green against the backdrop of the island — and shook his head with a smile. He gripped the bamboo tube and drained the last bit of water, then braced himself against the stone wall and slowly stood up——

“Ahhhh!” Fu Miaoxue suddenly screamed from outside. “Du Lai! Come quick! The fire is going out, what do we do ahhhh!!!”

Du Lai’s heart lurched. He rushed outside to find several charred pieces of wood propped up near the cave entrance. Not a single flame was visible — only a thin wisp of grey-white smoke remained!

If the fire went out, starting it again would be nearly impossible. They couldn’t count on another thunderstorm coming to their rescue!

Fu Miaoxue held a thin branch in her hands, poking around in the charred wood, so anxious she was about to stamp her feet.

“What do we do? What do we do?! I can’t get it lit! Du Lai, the fire is out!!!”

“Stop! Don’t mess with it!” Du Lai frowned and snatched the branch from her hand. “Go find some dry grass. Quickly!”

The jungle was never short of plant material.

Fu Miaoxue rushed back in a panic with a heap of dry grass. “Here’s the grass, here it is!”

She let go, and all the grass in her arms tumbled straight onto the wood!

Du Lai’s breath caught in his chest — he very nearly kicked her away.

“What are you doing?! You want the fire to go out faster?!” Du Lai swept the grass aside with his hand and said urgently, “If you smother it, oxygen can’t get in, and the fire will go out even faster! Do you have any common sense at all?!”

Fu Miaoxue bit her lower lip and said stubbornly: “You didn’t tell me! You only said to get dry grass!”

Du Lai grabbed a handful of grass and rubbed it between his fingers, then tossed it aside with cold indifference. “This grass won’t work. It’s dry on the outside, but it still has rainwater inside — it hasn’t dried through. Go find more.”

Fu Miaoxue said irritably: “It just rained! Where am I supposed to find dry grass for you?!”

Du Lai was anxious too. He scanned the surroundings with a furrowed brow——

Grass blades absorbed water and were slow to dry through. But some of the thicker branches were actually dry inside — you just had to strip off the outer bark. The problem was, to rekindle a fire, you needed finer material.

His gaze finally fell on the large boulder they had been sheltering against.

Fu Miaoxue seemed to sense something and followed his line of sight. She said immediately: “I’ll go get it!”

Before the words were even out of her mouth, she had already kicked off her shoes and was climbing up the rock barefoot!

Up there, besides the clothes she had left out to dry, there was also some moss that had been bleached dry in the sun.
