Volume 5: Journey West Beyond Yangguan Pass

Chapter 1: Princess Yinchuan

The early winter sunrise slowly ascended, gradually illuminating the light mist and thin fog of Beijing’s city towers. The shadows fell upon the bluestone boulevards like the omnipresent heavenly might of the emperor. Though last night’s residual snow was gradually melting, the undeniable chill seeped through the bare tree branches. Within the tranquil cold and gentle warmth lurked an underlying aura of solemn killing intent.

This was how the capital appeared in winter.

A young military officer sat astride a tall, magnificent horse, gazing toward the distant capital with melancholy eyes. He wore a steel saber at his waist and armor draped over his shoulders. Beneath his tightly knitted brows seemed to lie endless worries, while his scholarly air slightly diminished the fierce killing aura of his military attire.

“Staff Officer Lu! Staff Officer Lu!”

These repeated calls shattered the early winter tranquility. A small soldier rushed across the snowy ground toward the young officer, clearly bearing urgent news. The soldier called out breathlessly and loudly: “Staff Officer Lu!”

The young officer suddenly turned his head, his face still showing a trace of confusion, as if he was not yet accustomed to others addressing him by this title. The soldier paid no attention to these details and loudly conveyed his message: “Reporting to Staff Officer Lu, General Qin has urgent business and requests that you quickly return to the main camp.”

The young officer nodded: “I shall arrive immediately.” He squeezed his horse’s flanks with both legs and shot forward like an arrow released from its bow.

The horse’s hooves galloped rapidly, and in the blink of an eye, a vast array of military tents appeared before him. At the center stood a commander’s tent, with large yellow banners hanging on both sides bearing thirteen blood-red characters: “Imperial Bestowed Marquis Shanmu, Northern Pacification Grand Commander Liu Angtian.” Facing forward hung a flag fluttering in the wind, emblazoned with a large character “Qin.”

The tent flaps suddenly parted, and a tall, robust man emerged, bending slightly at the waist. He looked up at the rising sun, squinting his eyes and declaring loudly: “What warm sunlight!” As the daylight illuminated this man’s face, one could see his prominent nose, wide mouth, and thick eyebrows slanting upward, his face naturally bearing an expression of fearlessness. When the large man saw the approaching cavalry, a faint smile suddenly appeared at the corners of his mouth, creating several deep wrinkles on his cheeks—clearly marking him as a hero weathered by wind and frost.

The large man laughed heartily: “Excellent! Excellent! I had someone summon you back, and you arrived before I could count from one to five. Ha ha, Brother Lu really gives me face!” The young officer dismounted and said: “Military law is like a mountain, and military discipline is the foundation of governing troops. As a staff officer, how could I break General Qin’s rules?”

The large man was very pleased and said: “People in the martial world all say you’re arrogant and unruly, but how is it I don’t see any of that?”

The young officer smiled slightly and said: “Under General Qin’s command, even the Jade Emperor himself would have to be obedient. Lu Yun is merely a spirited young man—how would I dare to act presumptuously?”

The two men looked at each other and laughed heartily, full of mutual admiration and sympathy.

This large man was none other than “Fire-Greedy Single Blade” Qin Zhonghai, and the young officer before him was the staff officer Lu Yun, whom he had painstakingly sought out. The two had been ordered to escort the princess for a political marriage and were currently awaiting the princess’s ceremonial procession to leave the city.

Qin Zhonghai said: “It’s now past the hour of Mao. It seems the princess will arrive soon, so we must prepare.” He ordered the horns to be blown, and after the wailing sound echoed, all the soldiers suddenly shouted in unison: “Break camp!” The sound was magnificent, as if it could awaken the sleeping capital of Beijing. Five thousand soldiers began dismantling the tents, their movements uniform and well-practiced, demonstrating the strictness of their military training.

In less than a moment, five thousand cavalry had donned their equipment and stood quietly arranged on the snowy ground, awaiting Qin Zhonghai’s command. Under the sunlight, the gleaming blades were dazzling, the armor bright, and every man was in high spirits—an indescribably neat and uniform sight.

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “Our army’s momentum is like a rainbow. What does Staff Officer Lu think?”

Lu Yun praised: “I had only heard that General Qin’s military governance was strict, but I never imagined it was refined to this degree. Truly worthy of the General’s mighty reputation.”

Qin Zhonghai gave a hearty laugh: “You all keep flattering me—how can this continue? You should say something to scold me instead. Otherwise, if I become too arrogant, who will dare to speak even half a word against me in the future?”

He was about to continue speaking when he saw a messenger galloping toward them on horseback, calling out: “The princess’s jade carriage has arrived one li outside the city!”

Qin Zhonghai nodded and said: “The army’s front guard becomes the rear guard—we depart now to welcome the princess’s sacred procession!”

All the soldiers roared: “Yes!” Five thousand cavalry thundered forward, their hoofbeats rumbling like great drums, like thunder shaking the heavens.

After traveling several li, they saw two large banners held high in the distance, inscribed with “Avoid” and “Show Respect.” At the front, about a hundred palace attendants held silk drums and musical instruments, playing music. Within the musical accompaniment, the princess’s carriage slowly approached. The jade carriage was lacquered in gold and inlaid with jade, extraordinarily precious. Sixteen long-legged white horses arranged in four columns trotted slowly ahead, pulling the carriage forward. A high official followed beside the carriage—a man astride a verdant jade horse, wearing brocade red robes. This was none other than Censor He.

Qin Zhonghai dismounted and knelt on the ground: “Your subordinate, Liaodong Roving General Qin Zhonghai, has come to welcome the princess’s sacred procession.” Censor He nodded with pleasure: “With Zhonghai here, our journey will surely be safe. Please rise quickly!” Qin Zhonghai responded: “Your subordinate will exert his utmost effort and dare not violate the imperial edict. Please set Censor He’s mind at ease.”

Censor He smiled: “Zhonghai, don’t be so formal—please rise quickly!”

Qin Zhonghai was about to stand when he suddenly heard a shrill voice: “You young fellow, how rude! You only see Censor He but don’t see me?” Qin Zhonghai was startled and looked up to see a person with thick white powder on his face and bright red lips, staring at him with a bizarre appearance. He immediately recognized this as Xue Nu’er, the Deputy Director of the Eastern Depot. Around him were scattered more than ten eunuchs, presumably all from the Eastern Depot.

This Xue Nu’er possessed high martial arts skills and, combined with his strange nature, had ruined countless court officials. Qin Zhonghai frowned, not expecting this person to accompany the princess—truly a troublesome matter.

Xue Nu’er said coldly: “Now that you see me, why don’t you pay your respects?”

If other military generals had encountered Xue Nu’er, they would certainly have bowed and scraped, fearing to offend this person. But this Qin Zhonghai had always been bold and reckless. Upon seeing this “flower demon,” he merely frowned without any other reaction. Seeing his prolonged inaction, Xue Nu’er immediately became angry: “Surnamed Qin, what are you standing there for? Don’t you know to come over and pay your respects?”

Qin Zhonghai thought to himself: “This neither-male-nor-female old demon doesn’t know what he’s being arrogant about. Let me first give him a show of force to suppress his arrogance. Otherwise, this person will become increasingly tyrannical—how will we conduct business in the future?” He smiled and said: “So it’s Deputy Director Xue who has arrived. I didn’t notice for a moment—please forgive me.” With that, he stood up in a lazy manner.

Seeing that he neither kowtowed nor paid proper respects, Xue Nu’er became furious: “You damned fool! How can you be so ignorant of propriety? I didn’t tell you to stand up—how dare you stand straight before me?” Qin Zhonghai deliberately provoked him, yawning and bowing slightly: “Oh! I had forgotten about that. Good morning, Deputy Director Xue! Did you sleep well last night?” He continued yawning and simply walked away.

Xue Nu’er was beside himself with rage. He reached for his famous weapon, the “Celestial Golden Wheel,” wanting to kill. He had once used this weapon to kill several Kunlun Sect masters, and even severed one of “Sword Wave” Liu Lingchuan’s hands, demonstrating its tremendous power.

Just as Xue Nu’er was about to act, an extremely gentle voice came from the princess’s jade carriage: “Ministers, please do not quarrel. On this westward journey, we must work together in unity—we cannot create unnecessary disputes and arguments.” Though the voice sounded quite young, it carried a noble and inviolable dignity. This was Princess Yinchuan speaking. Hearing these words, everyone dismounted and knelt down: “Your subordinates will work together with all our strength and dare not violate the princess’s teachings!”

Xue Nu’er knelt on the ground, agreeing profusely, but glared fiercely at Qin Zhonghai. Qin Zhonghai merely grinned and feigned stupidity, completely ignoring Xue Nu’er’s vicious expression.

The remaining five thousand soldiers, seeing their commander kneel, quickly knelt as well. Suddenly, a continuous clanging sound filled the air—the sound of the generals’ waist weapons striking the ground. Everyone thought: “This Princess Yinchuan’s voice is very refined and dignified—she must be an exceptionally beautiful woman.”

At this time, court politics were chaotic. Among the three factions at court, Jiang Chong’s faction held the greatest power, controlling most military and political decisions. However, though Jiang Chong’s faction was powerful, they could not manage the palace’s internal affairs. Palace authority had always remained in the hands of the Eastern Depot, mostly controlled by Liu Jing, the Director of the Eastern Depot among Beijing’s Twelve Directorates. The Jiang and Liu factions were mutually uncompromising, fighting for power and profit, always sabotaging and attacking each other during disputes, and competing desperately when benefits were involved—never having a peaceful day.

This political marriage was of great importance. Liu Jing, having received the imperial order to arrange the princess’s journey, was doubly careful. If anything happened to the emperor’s beloved daughter, his head might not remain secure. Deeply fearing that Jiang Chong would scheme against him, Liu Jing sent the martially skilled Deputy Director Xue Nu’er to personally oversee matters, while borrowing Censor He’s voice to request Liu Angtian’s army for escort, preventing ambushes by mountain bandits and robbers. With all preparations thus complete, there should be nothing more to worry about.

Who knew that the two groups of people were truly incompatible, and Xue Nu’er’s temperament was really too bad, causing disputes and mutual displeasure as soon as the leading figures met.

After hearing the princess’s rebuke, everyone dared not act and could only silently escort her forward.

After the army had traveled several li, Lu Yun rode on horseback discussing military affairs with Qin Zhonghai when he suddenly saw Xue Nu’er shouting in the distance about some matter that had aroused his temper. Seeing this person, Lu Yun was greatly startled and asked in a low voice: “General Qin, isn’t that Xue Nu’er? What is this person doing here?”

Qin Zhonghai chuckled: “The emperor sent him to co-direct the political marriage with Censor He. We’ll have to get along well with him for quite some time.”

Hearing that he would have to work with this eunuch, Lu Yun couldn’t help but frown. That day at Prince’s Alley, he had also encountered Xue Nu’er. This person’s martial arts were sinister and his conduct brutal—who would have thought the emperor would have him co-direct the political marriage with Censor He? It was completely unexpected.

Qin Zhonghai, however, remained smiling and unconcerned.

The five thousand troops slowly escorted the princess’s carriage westward. Wherever they passed, local forces came to receive the procession, and at night the princess stayed in luxurious residences prepared by local government offices. The journey was peaceful and without incident. Only Xue Nu’er put on great airs—whenever he saw the receiving officers and soldiers, he would first give them a severe scolding before feeling comfortable and satisfied. Seeing this deputy director’s extreme arrogance, local commanders all secretly resented him but were helpless.

During idle moments on the road, Censor He invited the accompanying Taichang Temple music and dance instructors to teach everyone the language of the Timurid Khanate. At this time, translation work in the capital was mostly handled by the Taichang Temple, which established eight institutes for Mongol, Jurchen, Western Heaven, Muslim, and other languages. The translators within were collectively called music and dance instructors. This political marriage required liaison with the Khanate, naturally necessitating several translators to accompany them. Qin Zhonghai was very casual about studying, only forcing the music and dance instructors to teach him a few crude curse words before lazily losing interest. But Lu Yun was extremely earnest, studying very diligently.

Seeing his diligent practice, Qin Zhonghai laughed: “Brother Lu, you’re practicing such fluent barbarian speech—don’t tell me you want to relocate to the barbarian tribes and never return to the Middle Kingdom!”

Lu Yun smiled slightly: “In the future, when we meet the Khan face to face, if no one among us can speak their barbarian tongue, wouldn’t that make them look down on us?”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “Well said! We are the Celestial Empire—how can we let these barbarians underestimate us?”

Seeing Lu Yun’s refined and scholarly manner, he thought even more: “Damn it, my army is full of rogues and scoundrels with few who can read. It really requires a scholar to take charge of the situation. Look how perceptive I was to find Brother Lu to assist me.” Thinking of this, he became even more pleased with himself.

After half a month, they had left Zhili Province. The army traveled along the Great Wall, and the roads gradually became desolate. Qin Zhonghai instructed everyone to be careful and vigilant, never to be careless. Sometimes when travel was delayed and they couldn’t find lodging at night, they had to inconvenience the princess by camping and sleeping in the open. When staying outdoors, the military guard was extremely strict at night, fearing any disturbance. Qin Zhonghai and Lu Yun took turns guarding the princess’s fragrant tent, often unable to sleep well all night.

This evening, they finally reached a county town, and everyone breathed a sigh of relief, thinking: “It looks like we can get a good night’s sleep tonight!”

Lu Yun then led a small team of cavalry into the city first. As soon as he entered, he looked around and suddenly saw the roads on both sides crowded with people—countless black heads with unknown intentions. His heart jumped with alarm, deeply fearing something amiss. He quickly reined in his horse and urgently ordered a messenger to report back to Qin Zhonghai. In an instant, all five thousand troops inside and outside the city stopped simultaneously.

Qin Zhonghai suddenly saw the army halt and a messenger racing toward him in panic. Without waiting to hear the detailed report, he spurred his horse into the city to provide rescue. When he saw Lu Yun sitting properly on his horse, his heart settled somewhat, and he urgently asked: “Is there some matter? Why did you suddenly stop?”

Before Lu Yun could answer, Qin Zhonghai had already seen the sea of people crowding the city and was also startled.

Lu Yun said in a low voice: “What’s with these people? How did they crowd onto the streets? Could they intend harm to Her Highness the Princess?”

Qin Zhonghai was also puzzled. He raised his voice and shouted: “Where is the county magistrate!” He then drew his sword and spurred his horse forward. Seeing his fierce approach, the crowd hurriedly made way.

As Qin Zhonghai was shouting, he suddenly saw a thin, small man hurrying out from the crowd, bowing and cupping his hands: “Your humble official Liu Zhangren is here to welcome the princess’s sacred procession.”

Qin Zhonghai snorted: “What’s with all these common people? How dare they block the road?” Seeing his unpleasant expression, Liu Zhangren hastily said: “General, please don’t worry. These are all common people who, out of love and respect for the princess, wanted to come pay their respects and see her sacred countenance. There is absolutely no ill intent, absolutely no ill intent.”

Lu Yun found this very strange. Logically, when large armies passed through, common people would avoid them at all costs. How could they be so sincerely devoted? Could there be deception involved? He quickly glanced at Qin Zhonghai. Understanding his meaning, Qin Zhonghai snorted and said: “Spare me this nonsense. I figure you probably incited the people to take to the streets to flatter the princess!”

Liu Zhangren was startled and quickly prostrated himself on the ground in alarm: “General, please investigate clearly! These people heard the princess was coming and all spontaneously took to the streets to pay respects, wanting to kowtow and thank her for her kindness. This was absolutely not arranged or instigated by your humble official. Please investigate clearly, General!”

Qin Zhonghai sneered: “Is that so? What kindness has our princess, raised in the deep palace, shown you?”

Liu Zhangren said: “Last year this county suffered a great flood, and the people were so poor they had nothing to eat. We urgently reported to the court, but the Ministry of Revenue said they had no money for disaster relief, forcing the local people into homelessness and child-eating desperation. When Princess Yinchuan heard of this matter, she allocated funds from her own savings and sent one hundred thousand shi of white rice to the people here, thus saving tens of thousands of households. The people are deeply grateful and regard her as a living Bodhisattva.”

Qin and Lu both exclaimed “Oh!” in surprise, not knowing that Princess Yinchuan possessed such kindness. From this perspective, she truly had human feeling toward the people here, so they both set their minds at ease.

Qin Zhonghai smiled at Lu Yun: “Who would have thought our precious princess is quite insightful—ha ha, she might even be stronger than her father.” Lu Yun coughed lightly and said in a low voice: “General, be careful with your words lest others say you speak disrespectfully. You could bring trouble upon yourself.” Qin Zhonghai merely smiled without commenting either way.

As the two men were talking, a horse galloped up from behind. In the hoofbeats, they heard someone shrieking: “Who dares block the road? They truly deserve ten thousand deaths!” It was Eastern Depot Deputy Director Xue Nu’er arriving.

Liu Zhangren stepped forward and knelt: “Your humble official Liu Zhangren pays respects to Your Lordship.” Xue Nu’er shouted: “You ordered all these damned lowly people to take to the streets and block the road—what is your intention? Do you perhaps want to attempt assassination?”

Liu Zhangren was so frightened his whole body shook: “Your humble official wouldn’t dare!”

Xue Nu’er gave a cold laugh and was about to speak when the sound of silk and bamboo instruments arose—the princess’s jade carriage had already entered the city. Xue Nu’er frowned, deeply fearing the people would disturb the princess. He quickly shouted at Qin Zhonghai: “What are you standing there for? Why don’t you quickly drive away these dead commoners! If they frighten the princess later, who can bear the consequences!” The soldiers heard his scolding but none moved a step, showing that this force maintained strict military discipline—without Qin Zhonghai’s command, no one could direct them.

Seeing no one paid him any attention, Xue Nu’er became furious and shrieked: “Qin Zhonghai! The princess is about to arrive—why aren’t you giving orders, you fool? What exactly are you good for!”

Qin Zhonghai snorted and was about to retort when the princess’s gentle voice came from within the carriage: “Ministers, what matter is this? Why are you speaking so loudly?”

Xue Nu’er was about to respond when the crowd roared: “The princess has come! Her Highness Baozhu has come!” They all pressed toward the jade carriage. Xue Nu’er was greatly alarmed: “Rebellion! Rebellion! How dare these dead commoners show such lawlessness? Qin Zhonghai, quickly send people to drive them away!”

Seeing the chaotic crowd, Qin Zhonghai also worried for the princess’s safety and quietly gave orders: “Everyone protect the princess and keep the people outside.”

The soldiers were about to advance when suddenly countless people knelt down together before the princess’s carriage. The various capital officials, seeing them suddenly kneel, were all stunned, not knowing their intentions. Qin Zhonghai said sternly: “Spearmen! Take positions to the front!”

The soldiers took advantage of the people’s kneeling to push forward urgently, quickly occupying the ground before the carriage while keeping the people outside and completely surrounding and protecting the princess. Qin Zhonghai personally held his sword to guard the front of the carriage, fearing someone might harbor ill intentions and attempt assassination.

Liu Zhangren prostrated himself and declared loudly: “Your subject, County Magistrate Liu Zhangren, together with ten thousand people of this county, kowtows to Her Highness the Princess—may you live a thousand years, a thousand thousand years!” The people also shouted loudly: “Princess, may you live ten thousand years, ten thousand ten thousand years!” These people didn’t understand the distinction between “ten thousand years” and “thousand years,” so they opened their mouths and shouted chaotically. Though it was disorderly and irregular, everyone’s faces showed sincere gratitude. Several old women even prayed silently with tears streaming down their faces, showing how deeply Princess Yinchuan was loved by the people.

After kowtowing for a while, Liu Zhangren said: “Last year, without the princess’s protection, the people here would have died of famine long ago—how could we see daylight again? The princess’s kindness is like the radiance of sun and moon, for which we are eternally grateful. Today, learning that the princess is marrying and passing through this county, your subject leads the people to kowtow, present gifts, and glimpse your heavenly countenance.”

A gentle voice came from within the carriage: “As a member of the imperial family, this palace naturally must care for the people—this is merely duty. County Magistrate Liu, why be so formal?” Hearing the princess speak, the people immediately cheered.

The brocade curtain swayed slightly—Princess Yinchuan was actually about to exit the carriage! Several palace maids quickly stepped forward to serve her. Everyone held their breath and concentrated, waiting to see the capital’s foremost beauty emerge. Liu Zhangren was even more delighted, joining the people in calling out honorific titles and kowtowing repeatedly.

Seeing the princess about to descend from the carriage, Qin Zhonghai was greatly alarmed and quickly blocked the front of the carriage, kneeling: “The princess’s body is worth a thousand gold—you absolutely must not leave the carriage at will! If anything should happen, your subordinate could not escape responsibility!” Censor He nearby was also anxious and quickly added: “What General Qin says is extremely correct. The princess has a body worth ten thousand gold—how can you show yourself in public here? Please reconsider.”

Princess Baozhu sat in the jade carriage and said gently: “All these people have come for me—how can this palace not see them? Ministers, please say no more and kindly step aside.” Qin Zhonghai remained prostrated without moving, showing no intention of stepping aside. Seeing an opportunity, Xue Nu’er gleefully stirred trouble: “Qin Zhonghai! You bold madman, how dare you obstruct the princess’s movements? Do you not want to live?”

But they heard the princess say: “Eunuch Xue, please step aside as well.” Xue Nu’er’s face changed color, and he quickly moved to one side.

The brocade curtain lifted—the princess was about to descend from the carriage. Qin Zhonghai sighed, knowing he could not dissuade her, and could only step aside. He found Lu Yun and whispered instructions: “Brother Lu, quickly climb onto the rooftop across the street. If anyone below acts suspiciously, kill without mercy.”

Lu Yun nodded and hurried away with light body technique. Qin Zhonghai additionally deployed the army to guard from four directions, completely surrounding the jade carriage, while he himself drew his sword and stayed close to provide personal protection.

Following orders, Lu Yun flew up to a residential rooftop to monitor from above. He saw below a sea of people, with crowds kneeling throughout the street, while the officers and soldiers formed a circle protecting the princess’s carriage. Just then, a palace maid lifted the carriage curtain, and a pair of delicate jade feet extended from the carriage, followed by a woman slowly stepping down from the jade carriage—this must be the princess herself.

Lu Yun watched from afar and saw her skin was fair and delicate, wearing palace dress, her figure quite graceful, but due to the great distance between them, he could not clearly see her facial features.

He saw the princess wave to the people, and they were overjoyed, all kowtowing and loudly praising the princess’s kindness. The princess’s expression was calm, completely amiable and approachable without the slightest trace of arrogance, causing Lu Yun to nod secretly in approval. Given the current imperial family’s domineering nature, Princess Yinchuan’s such modesty and gentleness could be called rare and precious. After watching for some time, Lu Yun feared neglecting his duties and shifted his gaze to scan the surrounding crowd. His entire body was filled with martial energy—if he saw any unfavorable situation, he would immediately leap forward to rescue the ruler.

He heard the princess’s voice: “Fellow villagers, you have worked hard. Today this palace can meet with you all, greatly comforting my life. I only hope that in the future this place will have abundant harvests year after year, that everyone will always have ample food and clothing, and all will have good days ahead.”

Hearing her sincere prayers for everyone’s welfare, the people were deeply moved. A local gentleman rushed forward, shouting loudly as he ran straight toward the princess, his intentions unknown. Qin Zhonghai was startled and was about to reach out to stop him when suddenly the gentleman threw himself to the ground and wept loudly: “The people of this county heard that the princess is going far to the Western Regions and fear we may never see you again in this lifetime. We only pray that Heaven will protect and bless the princess with peace and joy in the future, and early birth of noble sons. Our hearts’ wish will then be fulfilled.” He kowtowed repeatedly, his emotion genuine and moving.

Hearing this prayer, Princess Yinchuan’s body suddenly trembled slightly. Qin Zhonghai stole a glance and saw her eyes slightly reddened as if tears were about to fall, but in an instant she regained her composure. Seeing her considerable self-control, Qin Zhonghai thought: “This young lady has great forbearance—she is no ordinary person.” The princess was but in the bloom of youth, yet possessed such insight—truly extremely rare.

As he was secretly praising, he heard the princess say: “The fellow villagers’ thoughtfulness is precious to this palace. On this journey to the Western Regions, I will not forget today’s feelings.”

An elderly man stepped forward holding some objects: “Without Her Highness the Princess’s kindness, how could we have today? The people of this county pooled money for several days to prepare some small gifts for the princess—we hope the princess will accept them with a smile.” Liu Zhangren, fearing the princess might think he was opportunistically profiting, quickly said: “Princess, please don’t misunderstand—these are all just small tokens of respect using local products, absolutely not any people’s fat and blood.”

The elderly man quickly presented the objects, which were seen to be bamboo baskets and bamboo chairs—all common, inexpensive items. After Qin Zhonghai examined them, he ordered them to be accepted.

The princess also paid no mind and smiled: “Thank you all for the trouble.” She looked carefully at the people, her facial expression seeming very moved. A palace maid nearby said quietly: “The wind is strong outside—please enter quickly, Princess!”

The princess nodded slightly and, following the advice, bent down to enter the carriage.

Seeing her finally return to the carriage, everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Qin Zhonghai sheathed his sword and waved to Lu Yun, signaling him to come down.

Just as everyone was relaxing, they suddenly heard a woman’s voice from the crowd shouting loudly: “Hypocritical and false!” Following this, a white light flashed as something shot from the crowd toward the carriage with extremely fierce momentum.

Qin Zhonghai was greatly alarmed and quickly raised his waist saber to strike down hard at the object. With a “clang,” sparks flew everywhere as the item fell to the ground—it was a blue steel throwing dart, obviously poisoned with deadly toxins. Seeing her strike had missed, the woman quickly fled into the crowd.

Both shocked and enraged, Qin Zhonghai shouted loudly: “Everyone protect the princess!” The soldiers quickly gathered, surrounding the princess completely. Seeing someone attempt to assassinate the princess, the common people were terrified and scattered in all directions. The streets filled with running people—the elderly, weak, women, and children panic-stricken and crying loudly, their wails shaking the heavens. Censor He, already weak by nature, was frightened out of his wits upon seeing such a scene, not knowing what to do.

Lu Yun, watching from a distance, saw the assassin fleeing and immediately leaped down, hurrying in pursuit.

County Magistrate Liu Zhangren stood frozen in place, his legs trembling constantly. Xue Nu’er pounced forward, grabbed him up, and shrieked: “I knew long ago you weren’t a good person! How dare you conspire with rebels—do you seek death?” He immediately ordered his men to arrest him.

Liu Zhangren’s lips trembled as he muttered: “It’s over… my official career is finished… how could I have such bad luck…”

Seeing the chaos here, Qin Zhonghai feared someone might take advantage of the disorder to cause more trouble. He raised his saber and shouted: “All officers listen to orders—protect the princess and withdraw outside the city!” Several deputy officers quickly mounted their horses, and five thousand troops escorted the princess’s jade carriage in their midst, rapidly retreating toward the city gates. Censor He, his face pale with fright, was also protected by the troops as they fled the county town in great haste.

Lu Yun didn’t wait for the assassin to get far before rushing into the crowd. In several leaps, he had blocked the path of the attacking woman. Lu Yun demanded: “Who are you? Why do you attempt to assassinate our dynasty’s princess?” The woman cried out softly and wiped her face—it now bore a mask with blue face and protruding fangs.

Lu Yun shouted: “What are you doing? Are you afraid people will recognize your face?” The woman paid no attention and tried to escape into the crowd. How could Lu Yun allow her to flee calmly? He used his “Peerless Consecutive Fists,” throwing a punch toward her face. Just as he was about to succeed, palm winds suddenly attacked from both sides—unexpectedly, this woman had companions lying in ambush nearby. Lu Yun quickly looked left and right to see two masked men approaching. He raised both hands to protect his body and focused his spirit, exchanging one palm strike each with the two men. When the four palms met, Lu Yun gave a great shout, and his palm force sent both men grunting and retreating several steps—clearly their martial skills were insufficient.

Lu Yun shouted: “Bold madmen, surrender quickly!” He struck out with two more palms. The two men raised their palms to resist, but with a “crack,” they were again forced back a step by Lu Yun’s palm force, with one even spitting fresh blood.

Lu Yun silently circulated his “Absolute Heart Method” and was about to deliver two more strikes when he heard someone behind him take a deep breath. His heart trembled with alarm—there was still a master lying in ambush! This person’s breathing was long and steady, indicating profound internal energy. Without waiting for that person to attack, Lu Yun quickly lifted his leg in a backward kick. The person chuckled and, without dodging, raised his palm to strike Lu Yun’s leg. The palm wind was urgent and fierce—one blow would likely break his leg bone.

Lu Yun was startled and thought: “This person’s martial skills are refined and strong—I cannot fight him head-on.” He quickly withdrew his leg, slightly turned his body, and suddenly threw a punch toward the person’s face. The person cried “Wah!” and raised his palm to block. When fist and palm met, their internal energies clashed, and both were forced back a step by their opponent’s force. Lu Yun regulated his breathing and looked at the person—he saw a tall, large figure also wearing a mask.

Seeing the newcomers were skilled in martial arts and fearing Lu Yun might be at a disadvantage, Qin Zhonghai ordered his subordinates to protect the princess out of the city while spurring his horse back to provide rescue. The several assassins, seeing Qin Zhonghai’s arrival, hastily turned and squeezed into the crowd, disappearing without a trace in an instant.

Lu Yun shouted: “Where are you going!” and also pushed into the crowd. Suddenly a steel dart flew over, shooting straight at Lu Yun. Unable to dodge in time, Lu Yun was about to be struck when a blade chopped down, cutting down the steel dart—it was Qin Zhonghai acting to save him.

Lu Yun quickly said: “These thieves haven’t gone far—let’s quickly pursue them!”

Seeing the people scattered and fleeing, blocking the roads completely, Qin Zhonghai knew it would be difficult to catch anyone now. If they fell for a diversion tactic, the princess might be in danger. He said: “We should exit the city to protect the princess first—don’t chase these assassins for now.” Lu Yun understood this reasoning and agreed.

As the two were about to leave, they saw someone blocking the road, shouting loudly: “You dead commoners, nobody move! Until we catch the thieves, no one is allowed to leave!” It was Xue Nu’er in a thunderous rage. The people were already panic-stricken, with men, women, old and young squeezed together, all trying to flee for their lives. Hearing Xue Nu’er’s angry shout, they ran even faster. Xue Nu’er shrieked, and instantly his figure flashed as he delivered several heavy slaps, knocking down several people, then shouted: “Take one more step and this lord will kill!”

The crowd was terrified out of their wits and quickly knelt down, all trembling with fear.

Eastern Depot personnel dragged the county magistrate along, constantly kicking and beating him. Liu Zhangren cried out his innocence, but no one paid attention.

Qin Zhonghai and Lu Yun exchanged glances, both frowning, and were about to step forward to intervene when they saw a young boy crying pitifully, walking toward Xue Nu’er without any adult accompanying him. It seemed the child couldn’t find his mother and was searching for his family.

Xue Nu’er said coldly: “Little brat! Stand still and don’t move!” The small child, young and ignorant, heard Xue Nu’er speaking and thought he was a relative, so he walked toward him, crying continuously: “Mama! Mama!”

Xue Nu’er’s face filled with murderous intent as he sternly said: “I told you not to move, yet you still move!” Hearing his tone suddenly turn vicious, the child was even more frightened and cried loudly, his little feet trembling constantly. Xue Nu’er roared angrily: “You dare move again!” He raised his golden wheel threateningly.

This Xue Nu’er was one of the world’s most tyrannical people, unable to tolerate even a grain of sand in his eyes. Though this child was just a small toddler, if he didn’t follow his rules, he would still beat and kill without the slightest distinction. Seeing his fierce expression, the child was frightened and turned to run away. Xue Nu’er sneered: “Little lowly commoner still seeking death!” With that, cold light flashed as he prepared to throw his “Celestial Golden Wheel” to kill the chicken and warn the monkeys. The boy still didn’t know great disaster approached, only crying loudly: “Mama! Mama!”

Just as Xue Nu’er was about to cut him in half, someone suddenly jumped out shouting: “Stop!” This person had a long, square face and wore armor—it was Lu Yun. Xue Nu’er said coldly: “What do you want to do? Rebel?”

Lu Yun picked up the boy and shouted loudly: “The thieves have long since fled—these people are merely innocent commoners. How can you randomly commit murder? It’s precisely because the capital has officials like you who don’t love the people that there are so many rebels in the world!” The angrier he became, the more he pointed directly at Xue Nu’er with his right hand, his expression fierce.

Xue Nu’er raised his long eyebrows and said grimly: “Let me tell you—I would rather wrongly kill a thousand than let one thief escape. Step aside, or don’t blame me for killing you as well.” Lu Yun’s heart burned with anger: “Though I’m merely a small staff officer, I cannot bear to see you slaughter the people. Go ahead and attack!”

Xue Nu’er sneered: “You think I don’t dare?” He raised his golden wheel, about to strike Lu Yun.

Lu Yun knew his martial arts were supreme—that day even “Sword Wave” Liu Lingchuan’s martial arts couldn’t withstand a single strike from his “Celestial Golden Wheel.” How could he resist now, empty-handed and holding a child? Seeing him about to attack, Lu Yun felt apprehensive and couldn’t help stepping back, raising his right palm to protect his vital points at the chest.

Xue Nu’er shrieked: “Die!”

Unexpectedly, someone approached and placed a blade against Xue Nu’er’s neck, saying coldly: “Damn it, if you dare touch my men, I’ll take your head in payment.” It was Qin Zhonghai acting to save him. Originally, given Xue Nu’er’s martial arts, Qin Zhonghai would have no possibility of subduing him in one move, but first, Xue Nu’er had lost his guard in his rage, and second, Qin Zhonghai’s blade was extremely fast, catching him completely off guard, actually gaining the upper hand and firmly controlling him.

Xue Nu’er sucked in a cold breath and said grimly: “You dare commit insubordination! When I report to the princess later, you’ll all die without burial places!” Qin Zhonghai chuckled coldly: “Say one more word and I’ll immediately cut off your head to feed the dogs. Do you believe I have the guts?” He applied force with his hand, immediately cutting Xue Nu’er’s neck and leaving a thin line of blood.

Xue Nu’er was usually arrogant and domineering, but seeing Qin Zhonghai’s fierce expression, he couldn’t help changing color and stammered: “We can talk nicely… why must you resort to weapons?” He lowered his golden wheel.

Qin Zhonghai sneered: “Today I’m telling you plainly—in the future, if you act arrogant even once more, your grandfather’s five thousand troops aren’t just for show. I’ll have you shot full of arrows and die without a burial place. Do you believe it or not?” Xue Nu’er snorted through his nose, knowing he absolutely wasn’t joking, but his mouth still wouldn’t show weakness or beg for mercy—he just grunted sullenly.

The situation was tense when suddenly a messenger reported: “Censor He outside the city is very anxious and wants all the lords to quickly go out and protect the princess.”

Qin Zhonghai released Xue Nu’er and said coldly: “In the future, let’s mind our own business and everyone will get along well. Please remember this, Deputy Director Xue.” He then took Lu Yun’s hand: “Let’s go!”

Lu Yun looked back to see Xue Nu’er gnashing his teeth, obviously harboring resentment. He quickly said: “This person is full of schemes. After the General treated him thus today, he’ll surely seek revenge in the future.” Qin Zhonghai sneered: “Let him. If he has the guts, I, Qin Zhonghai, will definitely accompany him to the end.”

Before his words were finished, Xue Nu’er indeed shouted: “Qin Zhonghai! Stop right there!” He then took out his “Celestial Golden Wheel,” his face full of anger as he looked at Qin and Lu. His eyebrows were raised high, his facial expression strange and inexplicable—clearly he was truly enraged and might attack at any moment. For a moment, the situation was extremely critical.

Lu Yun was very nervous, not knowing what Xue Nu’er intended, and could only assume the stance of “Peerless Consecutive Fists,” ready to fight at any time. Qin Zhonghai, however, looked completely unconcerned, just shrugged his shoulders and turned to walk away. Xue Nu’er was furious beyond measure and shouted: “Qin Zhonghai! You humiliate me thus and think you can just let it pass? Turn around and let’s have a proper fight!”

Qin Zhonghai yawned and completely ignored him, just continuing to walk forward. Seeing Qin Zhonghai was deliberately provoking him, Xue Nu’er was so angry his face turned pale as he trembled: “Surnamed Qin, I’ll make you regret this for life!” He secretly gathered his strength, about to strike and kill.

Lu Yun was startled and summoned his “Peerless Consecutive Fists,” about to step forward to receive the attack, but Qin Zhonghai grabbed him, then turned around, looking at Xue Nu’er sideways and saying coldly: “Surnamed Xue, do you know why Lord Liu Jing can be the Director while you can only be the deputy forever?”

At this tense moment, Xue Nu’er never expected him to suddenly say this. He couldn’t help being stunned and shrieked: “The Eastern Depot’s affairs are none of your concern! Draw your blade and let’s fight!” He raised his golden wheel high, his face full of murderous intent, walking step by step toward Qin Zhonghai.

Qin Zhonghai remained completely unconcerned and continued speaking to himself: “Deputy Director! The reason you can’t rise to the main position and have been subordinate to others for so many years isn’t because your martial arts aren’t high enough, nor because you lack seniority—it’s because of your strange temperament! Think about it—if Director Liu were here today, with his deep cunning and calculation, would he threaten over such a small matter? Would he break relations over this?” These words left Xue Nu’er’s face alternating between pale and flushed, standing dumbfounded without moving to attack.

Seeing Xue Nu’er’s expression uncertain, Qin Zhonghai continued: “If you want to kill me today, it’s not difficult, but how will you escort the princess to the Western Regions? Will my five thousand troops listen to you? Who is your real enemy right now? Is it me or Jiang Chong? Think it through yourself!” With that, he turned to leave, completely ignoring the great power of the “Celestial Golden Wheel” and exposing his vital back points to Xue Nu’er.

Xue Nu’er seemed to have some feeling but only hung his head in silence, showing no sign of using his martial arts to attack.

Lu Yun was amazed, not knowing why this insufferably arrogant Xue Nu’er had become so docile. Not understanding the reason, he could only guard Qin Zhonghai’s back in case of sudden changes.

Lu Yun didn’t know that Qin Zhonghai’s words had deeply struck Xue Nu’er’s heart, making it difficult for him to act. Since entering the palace, Xue Nu’er had relied on his high martial arts and loyal protection of his master, accumulating merits for decades until he finally became the Eastern Depot’s Deputy Director. But because of Liu Jing’s presence, he could never advance further. Though Xue Nu’er greatly respected Director Liu, this matter always circled in his heart, leaving him deeply resentful. Hearing Qin Zhonghai mention this now made his heart feel even heavier.

Xue Nu’er stared blankly at the ground, thinking: “What Qin Zhonghai said is correct. My martial arts are higher than Director Liu’s, and I’ve been in the palace longer, yet why is he the Director while I can only be his deputy? It seems it really is because my temperament is too violent, repeatedly making great mistakes.”

He sighed and looked at Qin Zhonghai’s retreating figure, thinking: “This Qin Zhonghai may be a bastard, but there’s no rush to kill him. There are still important matters that require this person’s help. As long as Jiang Chong doesn’t fall, I absolutely cannot break relations with Liu’s faction. Sigh… when will I be able to rise to the Director position…” He lowered his head and pondered for a long, long time without speaking or moving.

After everyone left the city, the army saw their general return and quickly set up tents to establish camp and rest. Everyone was tired from the day and retired to their respective tents. Just as Qin Zhonghai was about to remove his boots, a palace maid entered the tent and said: “Her Highness the Princess requests the General’s presence for a discussion.”

Qin Zhonghai nodded: “I’ll be there immediately.” After the palace maid left, he quickly sent someone to find Lu Yun. Soon the messenger brought Lu Yun, who hurriedly asked: “What are the General’s orders?”

Qin Zhonghai said: “The princess wants to speak with several of us shortly—presumably to discuss military affairs and official business. You should come along too!” Lu Yun felt grateful, knowing Qin Zhonghai deliberately wanted him to participate in military decisions. He immediately cupped his hands: “Thank you for the General’s promotion.”

Qin Zhonghai suddenly remembered Lu Yun’s stubborn character and quickly said: “Let me warn you first—this princess doesn’t understand military affairs or strategy. She’s just a woman raised in the deep palace. If she mentions military matters later and has any ridiculous opinions, just listen and let it pass—absolutely don’t contradict her.” Qin Zhonghai worried that Lu Yun’s upright nature might offend the princess, so he warned him in advance to avoid great disaster.

Lu Yun nodded: “General Qin need not worry—I understand this.” After the two discussed for a while, they followed the palace maid into the brocade tent.

Lu Yun followed Qin Zhonghai inside to find Censor He, Xue Nu’er, and others had already arrived. Everyone’s faces showed considerable impatience—clearly they had been waiting long. Inside the tent hung a bamboo curtain separating the inner and outer areas. Only Princess Yinchuan sat alone inside, her form dimly visible through the curtain so her features couldn’t be seen clearly. Lu Yun knew that in the deep palace, men and women were separated, and the curtain’s purpose was to separate males and females. He thus stood to one side with hands hanging down, listening to orders.

Seeing everyone assembled, Princess Yinchuan said: “Ministers, please be seated!” Everyone knelt together in thanks and took their seats. Lu Yun, knowing his position was low and humble, only stood to one side, but Qin Zhonghai had already pulled over a chair and placed it before Lu Yun, indicating he should also sit.

After a moment, the princess asked: “We have been away from the capital for a month—when will we enter the Timurid Khanate?”

Censor He replied: “Reporting to the Princess, the convoy is scheduled to arrive at the Tianshan Mountains on December 15th, when the Khan will send a prince to welcome us.”

The princess calculated on her fingers: “It’s now November—in less than a month, I will leave the Middle Kingdom forever.”

Hearing the melancholy in her words, everyone fell silent, all feeling some pity for her.

Fearing the princess’s continued sorrowful thoughts might cause problems on the road, Censor He quickly said: “Your Highness need not be sad. In the future, if you wish to return home to visit, you need only inform the Khan and he will surely agree.” Princess Yinchuan sighed and didn’t respond for a long time. Censor He quickly made eye signals to Xue Nu’er, wanting him to say something pleasant to avoid the princess’s melancholy.

Xue Nu’er nodded in understanding and changed the topic, shrieking: “Reporting to the Princess, those assassins during the day were extremely hateful. Though they escaped for now, this servant will surely capture them soon and dismember them to vent Your Highness’s anger! As for County Magistrate Liu Zhangren, he has been arrested. Tomorrow this servant will have him executed publicly as a warning!”

Princess Yinchuan was startled in alarm: “You must not kill anyone! These assassins surely have their pitiful circumstances. If you capture these people, absolutely don’t kill them! Just bring them to me—I have questions to ask. Do you hear?”

Hearing the princess seemed sympathetic to the assassins, everyone was quite surprised. Xue Nu’er snorted, clearly disagreeing.

Censor He smiled apologetically: “Your Highness, please leave these matters to your subordinates—you needn’t worry about them.”

Princess Yinchuan observed their expressions and knew no one took her words seriously. She couldn’t help being annoyed: “No! You people are all cruel and merciless, never caring for the people. Deputy Director Xue, immediately release that county magistrate and don’t make things difficult for him!”

Xue Nu’er raised his head and shrieked: “This man neglected his duties and deserves death—how can he be released?”

The princess was very angry: “The ones who neglected their duties are you, not him! Quickly release him!”

Xue Nu’er was dissatisfied but only snorted without responding.

The others exchanged glances, their expressions quite troubled. This princess was a kind-hearted girl with her head full of loving the people and worrying before the world worries—but she did things completely ignoring court regulations. How were the ministers to handle this? Not one person spoke up in agreement.

Seeing no one paying attention to her, the princess turned directly to Qin Zhonghai: “General Qin, please tell me—if you capture those assassins, how would you handle them?”

Before Qin Zhonghai could answer, Xue Nu’er was already glaring at him angrily—clearly the rift between them remained deep. Qin Zhonghai glanced at him sideways, thinking: “This Xue Nu’er is naturally rigid-minded and speaks like an idiot. Watch me anger you to death.” He smiled and said: “The Princess is wise. This subordinate believes these assassins are quite skilled. If we can capture and subdue them in the future, after Your Highness reforms their violent nature, this subordinate should naturally incorporate them into the Imperial Guards so their skills can serve the country. What does Your Highness think?”

These words indeed pleased the princess greatly. She praised: “General Qin’s wholehearted devotion to the country greatly comforts me. If all officials in the world thought like you, the country would be at peace.”

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “Thank you for Your Highness’s excessive praise.” Stealing a glance, he indeed saw Xue Nu’er’s eyes blazing with fire, as if he wished to hack him to pieces to vent his hatred.

Actually, Qin Zhonghai’s words weren’t against his conscience. His army included many former fugitives and bandits—even Staff Officer Lu Yun was one of them. If these assassins joined the military, given their skills, they would certainly be of great benefit, like adding wings to a tiger. The princess’s request not to kill the innocent was exactly what he wanted.

Princess Yinchuan said: “Deputy Director Xue, you should learn more from General Qin—it would benefit you.” Hearing Xue Nu’er’s reluctant grunt, she continued: “That county magistrate is innocent—release him immediately and let him hurry home. Don’t make things difficult for him anymore. Do you hear?”

Xue Nu’er stood up resentfully. Though unwilling and reluctant, the princess had given an order, so he could only instruct his subordinates to release the man. He slowly walked to Qin Zhonghai’s side and secretly elbowed him in the back, wanting to make him suffer. Qin Zhonghai smiled slightly, pretended to say something to Lu Yun, and moved aside. Unable to retract his elbow, Xue Nu’er struck the tea bowl on the table, shattering it completely.

Censor He was quite displeased and said sternly: “Deputy Director Xue, how can you be so rude before the Princess?” Xue Nu’er’s face turned completely red as he stammered wordlessly. Qin Zhonghai laughed: “Deputy Director Xue nearly had a stroke recently and his limbs aren’t very nimble. Don’t blame him, Censor He.” Censor He was surprised: “Really? Deputy Director Xue’s martial arts are so high—how could his body be so weak?”

Qin Zhonghai smiled at Xue Nu’er: “Of course it’s true. Deputy Director Xue, isn’t that right?”

Xue Nu’er was furious but dared not contradict him lest he lose face even more. He could only say resentfully: “That’s right… I… I was dizzy recently and nearly had a stroke, so my limbs aren’t working well…”

The princess showed great concern: “These days the weather is getting colder—Deputy Director Xue must be careful and take good care of yourself!”

Hearing Qin Zhonghai’s chuckling, Xue Nu’er was both ashamed and angry, furious beyond measure. He shouted and rushed out of the brocade tent, knocking down many palace maids and guards along the way.

Seeing the princess’s furrowed brow, Censor He thought she disliked Xue Nu’er’s rudeness and said: “Your Highness, don’t blame Deputy Director Xue. He’s always been arrogant by nature and can’t stand being scolded. Please don’t take it to heart.”

The princess shook her head: “He’s always been loyal to me—I won’t blame him.” She suddenly sighed deeply: “When that assassin struck during the day, I heard her curse me as hypocritical and false. Sigh… every time I think of these four words, my heart feels uncomfortable, as if I’m terribly sorry to the people.”

Hearing her self-reproach, Censor He hastily said: “Princess, don’t think that way. Princess Yinchuan’s treatment of the people as her own children is known throughout the world. These bandits have eaten leopard hearts and bear galls to offend Your Highness—you absolutely mustn’t take their shameless words seriously.”

The princess paid him no attention and sighed softly: “Actually, Father Emperor hasn’t won the people’s hearts much in recent years—I’ve heard this even in the deep palace. Sigh… I wholeheartedly want to make up for Father’s mistakes, but with heavy taxes, bandits everywhere, and the people suffering unbearably, what can one person’s strength accomplish? Her cursing me as hypocritical and false isn’t excessive…” Her voice became choked with emotion, showing extreme heartache.

Hearing her criticize the emperor—that was slandering the current sovereign, a great treasonous act—everyone looked at each other, not daring to respond. At this moment, one careless word would later become a crime punishable by execution of nine generations. No one dared speak a word, and the fragrant tent was silent except for everyone’s heavy breathing.

After a long time, Princess Yinchuan sighed softly and said quietly: “This westward journey will be difficult—I hope you ministers can work together and stop quarreling over trivial matters. Understood?” Everyone breathed a sigh of relief and answered loudly: “Your subordinates respectfully follow Your Highness’s decree!”

The princess nodded, withdrew into the inner tent, and didn’t come out again. Seeing the princess’s mood wasn’t very good, everyone left the tent to avoid causing more trouble.

Outside the tent, Xue Nu’er was waiting. As soon as he saw Qin Zhonghai, he immediately slapped him, cursing: “Qin Zhonghai! You damned flatterer—utterly shameless!”

Qin Zhonghai quickly blocked it and chuckled dryly: “The princess wants everyone to get along peacefully—please stop cursing, Your Lordship!”

Xue Nu’er pulled his hand back angrily: “Bullshit! It’s all because your protection was inadequate that all these problems arose! You dare blame me!” His expression was extremely indignant.

Qin Zhonghai bowed deeply with a smile: “Alright! It’s all because I’m a bastard who did wrong—I absolutely won’t dare again next time.” But he remained grinning and unconcerned. Xue Nu’er snorted heavily and left in resentment.

This protection duty was indeed Qin Zhonghai’s responsibility, so Xue Nu’er wasn’t wrong to blame him. Qin Zhonghai was broad-minded by nature—if he was wrong, he was wrong, and he didn’t argue further. Admitting his mistake and apologizing settled the matter.

However, after this incident, everyone knew Princess Yinchuan was kindhearted by nature. They understood that in the future, if they needed to kill and burn, they absolutely couldn’t let her know, lest she interfere and cause unnecessary trouble.
