Everyone buried Zhang Zhiyue and busied themselves for a day. Gao Ding, seeing the endless martial world vendettas, was so frightened he trembled constantly, not knowing what to say. That evening, after everyone finished their tasks, they camped and rested in the mountain hollow. But everyone was troubled in heart, and hearing the two young women continuously weeping, not one person slept well.
Early the next morning, Wu Dingyuan discussed with everyone, “These two children are very pitiful. Without care on the road, why don’t we take them with us to Xiliang and send them back to Jiuhua Mountain on our return journey? Would this be acceptable?”
Wei Zizhuang also had this intention and said, “Brother Wu speaks very reasonably. We’re all from the same martial world – how can we not look after each other?”
Yang Suguan pondered for a while. With enemies now revealed, he knew this journey would be extremely dangerous. He shook his head and said, “It won’t work. With Jiang Chong’s unknown number of ambushes ahead, we can barely take care of ourselves – how can we ensure these two girls’ safety?”
Wei Zizhuang frowned. Earlier, Yang Suguan had agreed to escort Gao Ding home out of official courtesy, but now encountering two weak, orphaned girls, he seemed somewhat lacking in spirit. He snorted and patted his chest, “Lord Yang, don’t worry. If anything goes wrong on the road, I’ll forfeit this life to protect their safety.”
Wu Dingyuan also said, “Secretary Yang, don’t worry. It’s only ten days’ journey from here to Mount Song Shaolin Temple. If we encounter any more problems on the road, we’ll be near reinforcements and needn’t worry anymore.”
Yang Suguan, hearing their insistence, couldn’t say more and had to agree, “Since you both say this, let’s set out then!” The two young women, hearing they must leave, refused to go and wept bitterly at their uncle’s grave.
Everyone half-coaxed, half-deceived them, saying, “If you two don’t return to the mountain, your master will surely worry, and won’t he be sad and distressed?” With such gentle persuasion, they finally convinced them to leave.
All the way toward Mount Song, the two young women were sorrowful and desolate, continuously weeping on the road. Wei Zizhuang and Wu Dingyuan could only constantly comfort them, coaxing them to be happy each day. Yang Suguan was full of worry, deeply fearing another ambush. Fortunately, the road was peaceful with no more martial world figures encountered.
Several days later, they reached a county town. Yang Suguan, seeing they had two additional young women and Zhang Zhiyue was dead, really had no time to continue caring for Gao Ding. He took out his Ministry of War token and ordered the local county magistrate to assign people to escort Gao Ding home.
This Gao Ding was already powerless and without influence – the county magistrate couldn’t be bothered with him. But Yang Suguan’s father’s generation were all high officials – how dare the magistrate resist? He immediately complied and went to arrange personnel for the escort.
This day they finally reached the foot of Mount Song. Everyone breathed a sigh of relief. Yang Suguan said, “Finally we’ve reached the foot of Shaoshi Mountain. Everyone needn’t hide anymore and can rest properly.” He immediately led everyone up the mountain path.
Wu Dingyuan walked a few steps and suddenly saw Wei Zizhuang, Juan’er, and Yan Ting all stop in place, not following.
Wu Dingyuan asked curiously, “Aren’t you three coming?” Wei Zizhuang smiled awkwardly and shook his head, “No, we still have some matters to handle. You go with Secretary Yang!” He led Yan Ting and Juan’er toward the small town at the mountain’s foot.
Wu Dingyuan felt even more puzzled and quickly asked Yang Suguan, “What’s going on? Why isn’t Guard Wei coming with us?”
Yang Suguan wasn’t surprised at all and said flatly, “Guard Wei is a direct disciple of Wudang’s True Martial Temple. Since Patriarch Zhang Sanfeng, Wudang disciples have been forbidden to enter Shaolin. This is our temple’s ancient rule and cannot be changed.”
Wu Dingyuan was greatly surprised, “So that’s it. I didn’t know about this rule.”
Yang Suguan nodded and continued, “Besides this, Shaolin has another rule – for a thousand years we’ve never received female guests, so these two young ladies also cannot conveniently enter.”
Wu Dingyuan said “Oh” – he had heard that Shaolin’s rules were strict, but didn’t know they were this severe.
Walking to mid-mountain, the two saw a pavilion with several monks standing inside. Yang Suguan went forward and announced his name. The monks, hearing the three words “Yang Suguan,” quickly bowed and kowtowed, calling him “Grand-Uncle Master,” hurriedly reporting to the temple interior.
Wu Dingyuan was curious – this Yang Suguan was only twenty-five or twenty-six years old, probably ten years younger than himself. How could he have such high seniority? His heart filled with even more awe for this Secretary Yang.
As soon as the two climbed the mountain, over ten monks quickly walked out. The two leading monks – one was elderly and thin, the other fat and tall. Yang Suguan cupped his hands and bowed, “Suguan pays respects to Senior Brothers Ling Ding and Ling Zhen.” Wu Dingyuan’s heart stirred, knowing two of Shaolin’s Four Great Vajras had arrived, and quickly cupped his hands in greeting.
The tall one was “Tiger Claw Vajra” Ling Zhen, whose voice was like a great bell. He laughed heartily, “Junior Brother Yang comes at a good time! I wonder if those rabbit cubs from Kunlun Mountain have bothered you? If they dare to linger like ghosts, watch this old monk skin them alive!” Ling Zhen had fought with Zhuo Lingzhao several months ago and never forgot the matter. Though a monk, thinking of the grudges between Kunlun and Shaolin, his language became crude, completely unlike a virtuous high monk.
Yang Suguan smiled, “With senior brother’s assistance, who dares pull whiskers from a tiger’s mouth? Senior brother worries too much.”
Ling Ding smiled slightly, “Junior Brother Yang, let’s first sit in Luohan Hall. The Abbot is currently receiving guests and will be free shortly.”
Yang Suguan was startled upon hearing this and asked quietly, “Is there something happening in the temple?”
Ling Ding said calmly, “Shaolin Temple is at peace with the world – all visitors are friends. Junior brother needn’t worry.”
Everyone came to Luohan Hall. Wu Dingyuan saw many monks practicing martial arts with spears and staffs, some standing, some sitting. Knowing this was Shaolin Temple’s private affairs that shouldn’t be observed, he quickly lowered his head and walked past. This Luohan Hall had always been where Shaolin Temple taught their martial arts. Regardless of age, everyone in the temple had stayed in Luohan Hall. Ling Ding held the position of Luohan Hall Master, naturally one of Shaolin Temple’s top experts. Yang Suguan had received martial arts guidance from him in his youth, so the two were quite familiar.
After everyone was seated, Yang Suguan said, “My trip west involves great matters relating to the court’s fortune. I need to report to the Abbot.” He briefly mentioned what Liu Angtian had instructed.
After hearing this, Ling Ding said, “Junior Brother Yang, this journey will be extremely dangerous. That Jiang Chong absolutely won’t let you pass easily and will definitely send countless experts to pursue and kill you. How will you resist?”
Yang Suguan replied, “This is precisely why I returned to the temple. I hope senior brother, remembering our sect kinship, can give Suguan some assistance.”
Ling Ding sighed, “These past years, Shaolin’s great reputation has declined and we’ve been severely bullied. Think of Junior Brother Ling Yin – after decades of cultivation, he’s now imprisoned in Kunlun Mountain. This old monk absolutely won’t allow Shaolin disciples to suffer further humiliation. If the Abbot permits, I will accompany junior brother on this journey.”
Yang Suguan was delighted. He knew Ling Ding’s martial arts were supreme with few rivals in the martial world. If he could accompany him to Xiliang, no matter what great or small matters they encountered, they could turn misfortune into good fortune.
As the two were speaking, a Buddha’s invocation echoed from the corridor. Everyone’s eyes brightened as they saw an elegant and noble middle-aged monk walking in from outside. Though Wu Dingyuan was visiting Shaolin for the first time and had never seen this great master, seeing his extraordinary bearing and dignified appearance, he must be Shaolin’s Abbot – Master Ling Zhi, called one of the Four Great Vajras. He quickly stood up.
Yang Suguan, seeing this monk arrive, immediately stood and put his palms together, “Disciple Yang Suguan pays respects to the Abbot.”
Ling Zhi nodded and smiled, “Good that you’ve returned, good that you’ve returned.”
The monks, seeing the Abbot arrive, all paid their respects. As Wu Dingyuan expected, this monk was indeed Shaolin’s Abbot Ling Zhi. He appeared to be just over fifty, still about ten years younger than Ling Ding and Ling Yin, but his words carried natural authority that commanded respect.
The Four Great Vajras of Shaolin were collectively called “Zhi, Ding, Yin, Zhen.” The head Abbot was Ling Zhi. He entered the temple latest but had the highest natural talent and comprehension, surpassing his other senior brothers in achievement. He became Abbot at over forty and had held the position for more than ten years. Ling Zhi was well-versed in scriptures and especially compassionate. Since taking office, he had worked to change Shaolin’s fierce style, strongly restraining disciples from involvement in martial world disputes. He himself disliked fighting with others, so though his martial arts were high, his reputation wasn’t as great as Ling Ding’s.
When Ling Zhi saw Wu Dingyuan, he was slightly surprised and stared for a long time. Yang Suguan quickly said, “This is a friend of your disciple who currently also serves under Lord Liu.”
Ling Zhi nodded and suddenly reached out to carefully touch the top of Wu Dingyuan’s head. Wu Dingyuan didn’t know what the Shaolin Abbot intended. Though he wanted to dodge, fearing discourtesy, he could only lower his head and endure. Yang Suguan, Ling Ding and others were also quite puzzled, but the Abbot was so revered – his actions must have reason, so they remained silent and waited quietly.
After a moment, Abbot Ling Zhi patted Wu Dingyuan’s shoulder, indicating he should sit, and said solemnly, “Benefactor, forgive the disturbance. This monk meant no discourtesy, but seeing the benefactor’s unusual physiognomy, destined for connection with immortals and Buddhas, I presumptuously investigated.”
Wu Dingyuan asked curiously, “I have connection with immortals and Buddhas? How so?”
Ling Zhi said, “This monk just observed the benefactor’s prominent features with three unusual characteristics crowning your head. If not destined for great wealth and honor, then you’re meant for Buddhism or Taoism. Most congratulatory.”
Wu Dingyuan was delighted. He wasn’t a Buddhist or Taoist person, so he must be destined for great wealth and honor. Though he hadn’t thought about future wonderful encounters, since the Abbot spoke such auspicious words, there must be deep meaning. He quickly put his palms together in thanks.
Ling Zhi smiled slightly, “Benefactor’s blessed destiny is profound, far beyond ordinary people. Since childhood, have you encountered any inconceivable events?”
Wu Dingyuan reflected on his past life. Though he couldn’t say it was mediocre, he had lived by the blade’s edge, quite hardscrabble. He shook his head, “I’ve wasted time – now thirty-five and still ordinary.”
Ling Zhi said calmly, “Perhaps your blessed time hasn’t arrived. Benefactor needn’t be anxious.”
Wu Dingyuan nodded in agreement when he heard Yang Suguan cough and say to Abbot Ling Zhi, “Disciple has urgent matters and requests the Abbot’s assistance.”
Abbot Ling Zhi frowned, “I already heard when outside. Is this about court struggles?”
Yang Suguan nodded, “The Abbot guesses correctly. This westward journey is to eliminate our dynasty’s treacherous minister Jiang Chong. I hope the senior brothers will help.”
Ling Zhi sighed and shook his head, “The current Emperor is a warlike and aggressive man. Don’t mention removing one Jiang Chong – even if we completely replaced the Cabinet Grand Secretaries, court administration would probably still be harsh and difficult to improve.”
Yang Suguan’s father was one of the dynasty’s five Grand Secretaries. Hearing Ling Zhi criticize like this involved his father too. Yang Suguan was displeased and turned to Ling Ding, “Just now Senior Brother Ling Ding already agreed, saying he intended to accompany me to Xiliang. I wonder if the Abbot will permit this?”
Yang Suguan observed expressions carefully. He saw the Abbot seemed unwilling to participate in court struggles, but based on Ling Ding’s earlier words, he wanted to nail things down. If he could only get this great expert Ling Ding to accompany him on this temple visit, it would be a great achievement.
Ling Zhen, being at the bottom of the Four Great Vajras but usually quite hot-tempered, immediately heard the Abbot’s intention to delay and loudly called, “Damn! In recent years, Kunlun Mountain has become increasingly outrageous – first killing the entire Yanling Escort Agency, treating our lay disciples like pigs and dogs, then imprisoning Senior Brother Ling Yin. They simply treat us Shaolin disciples like wood! If the Abbot just gives the word, watch me be the first to charge into Kunlun Mountain and burn down their dog den!”
Ling Ding, being old and steady, quickly said, “Junior brother is rash! You mustn’t speak such discourteous words before the Abbot!”
Ling Zhen sneered coldly, “Senior Brother Ling Yin has been locked up for several months and we still don’t send people to rescue him – if this isn’t being a shrinking turtle, what is?”
Ling Zhi heard these words and understood Ling Zhen’s intention – nothing more than mocking his own weakness and humility, not daring to confront enemies. He said calmly, “We who study Buddhism seek first to deliver all living beings, second to achieve proper fruition. Unless absolutely necessary, we must not carelessly take life. Kunlun Mountain’s power grows daily, repeatedly sending people to provoke and even detaining our sect members. I’m not unaware of these things, but when will grievance and revenge end? I’ve already written several letters to Leader Zhuo, but he consistently ignores them…”
Ling Zhen said loudly, “Zhuo Lingzhao calls himself ‘Sword God’! He probably really thinks he’s a god! Abbot, with you being so accommodating and submissive, how could he pay attention to you?” Ling Zhen had been dissatisfied for long and now, with Yang Suguan’s visit to the temple, took the opportunity to speak out.
Ling Zhi sighed softly, “Recently I’ve quietly observed celestial phenomena – the world must have great changes. Within a few years, a great treacherous minister will emerge in the court, probably more ruthless than Jiang Chong and more vicious than the Eastern Depot. As they say, one thing restrains another – once treacherous heroes emerge, grassland hero-kings will become active. I see that in past years, Angry Azure Mountain’s rebels showed stirring ambition and will probably revolt again. When two heroes contend, the people will suffer – pity the millions of common folk who will fall into deep water and scorching fire…”
Everyone heard this seemingly random speech and was puzzled, looking at each other. Yang Suguan coughed lightly.
Abbot Ling Zhi ignored them and continued to himself, “Recently the martial world spreads the saying: ‘At year Wuchen’s end, Dragon Emperor moves, heavenly secrets still true, spirits and ghosts at ease.’ The world is about to be greatly chaotic, and court political struggles will resume. Though I want to stem the tide, I fear human power sometimes has limits. If we misjudge the situation, we might instead aid evil, so we hold back, hoping to see the situation clearly…”
He was about to continue when he heard Ling Ding sigh, “Abbot, please hear my words.”
Ling Ding held the position of Luohan Hall Master and had been in the temple for many years. His words always carried great weight. Ling Zhi heard him interrupt and wasn’t offended, saying, “What insight does senior brother have?”
Ling Ding chanted a Buddha’s invocation, “The Abbot’s Buddhist teachings are profound and consistently compassionate, unwilling to make enemies everywhere – naturally this is a blessing for all living beings. But we Shaolin disciples walking the martial world cannot suffer baseless humiliation, much less be arbitrarily killed. The Abbot takes the world as his responsibility – naturally this shows far-reaching vision. But with fire singeing our eyebrows, if the Abbot doesn’t consider our temple’s prestige, how can we subdue demons and monsters in the future?”
This speech from Ling Ding made everyone secretly cheer. The Abbot’s talk of nightly star observation seemed irrelevant and superstitious, hard to convince people – not as straightforward as Ling Ding’s words.
Ling Zhi, hearing this criticism, knew he couldn’t insist on his way alone. He could only sigh and nod, “Senior brother speaks correctly. I’ve been Abbot for over ten years but cannot preserve Shaolin’s reputation – truly shameful.” He looked at Ling Ding calmly, “You must be careful and cautious on this westward journey, avoiding random killing and adding to your sins.” His meaning already agreed to Ling Ding’s request, letting him accompany Yang Suguan to Xiliang. Everyone looked at each other, all overjoyed.
Yang Suguan was delighted and about to express thanks when he saw Abbot Ling Zhi take out an invitation from his sleeve and hand it to Ling Ding, “Here’s an appointment. Senior brother, on your return journey from Xiliang, you might represent me in attending the ceremony.”
Ling Ding reached out to take the invitation and looked carefully – his expression changed dramatically as he actually stood up. Nearby, Ling Zhen was quite amazed and quickly leaned over to look, instantly also alarmed. Everyone saw their expressions and felt extremely puzzled.
Yang Suguan frowned, “Who made this appointment? Could it be a battle invitation from Zhuo Lingzhao?”
Wu Dingyuan heard the three words “Zhuo Lingzhao” and couldn’t help gasping, but Ling Zhen sneered, “What kind of fart is Zhuo Lingzhao? This person is much stronger than him.” Everyone said “Oh” in disbelief, but saw Ling Zhen snatch the invitation from his senior brother’s hand and give it to Yang Suguan.
Yang Suguan looked down and saw the signature: five small gold characters reading “Ning Bufan of Mount Hua.” Ling Zhen sneered, “This is an invitation from Ning Bufan! Junior Brother Yang, what does that rabbit cub Zhuo Lingzhao amount to in front of him? Don’t you think so?” Though Ling Zhen’s words were somewhat exaggerated, they weren’t without basis. “Victorious in Eight Hundred Battles, Martial Arts Revered Under Heaven” – this was precisely the name card of the world’s greatest expert Ning Bufan, inviting Shaolin monks to witness his sword retirement ceremony. Before this world’s greatest expert, Zhuo Lingzhao would probably have to yield several points.
Yang Suguan recalled that day hearing Zhang Zhiyue’s words – Jiuhua Mountain disciples had also been invited to attend the sword retirement ceremony. It seemed this matter had already shocked the martial world. The martial world publicly recognized this person as “World’s Greatest in Martial Arts.” For this title, with Ning Bufan’s retirement, who knew how many great events would arise – mostly continuous bloodshed.
Ling Zhi said, “This Leader Ning has set the first day of the second month for his ‘Sword Retirement and Mountain Return’ ceremony. Since you’ll pass through Shaanxi, represent our temple monks in attending the ceremony.”
Ling Ding asked, “Why does this Leader Ning want to retire when his martial arts are at their peak? Could there be some unspeakable difficulty?”
Everyone also felt strange – why would this Ning Bufan give up his supreme throne and withdraw from the martial world? Could there really be secrets unknown to outsiders as Ling Ding suggested?
Ling Zhi shook his head, “I don’t know either. But I heard from the Mount Hua elder who visited just now that this Leader Ning is tired of martial world conflicts and doesn’t want to wield sword and blade anymore, so he conceived retirement. If this is true, it’s truly great wisdom and intelligence – most congratulatory.” He chanted a Buddha’s invocation, showing yearning.
Ling Zhen, hearing the Abbot’s humble retreat language again, immediately sneered, “Wonderful! We might as well also withdraw from the martial world and tear down Shaolin Temple’s signboard altogether! That would be even more joyful and compassionate!” The Abbot, mocked like this, looked somewhat uncomfortable and lowered his head to chant, acting as if he hadn’t heard.
Wu Dingyuan, sitting aside, also felt embarrassed. He wasn’t a Shaolin person and knew he’d heard much that outsiders shouldn’t hear, so he turned his head away, pretending ignorance.
The hall was completely quiet except for distant mountain bell sounds, quite melodious and moving. In the peaceful moment, suddenly Yang Suguan said, “Where is my master? I want to pay respects to him.”
Ling Ding was slightly surprised, not knowing what matter he sought Monk Tianjue for, “Unfortunately, Master Uncle is still in closed retreat at Damo Academy with instructions not to be disturbed.”
Yang Suguan sighed, “If Master knew of Ning Bufan’s retirement, he’d definitely feel regret – another opponent lost in the martial world.” The monks in the hall heard this and all changed color, standing up together, greatly startling Wu Dingyuan.
The monks stared at Yang Suguan with very complex expressions, while Yang Suguan slowly picked up his tea bowl and sipped lightly, treating their shocked expressions as if they didn’t exist.
“Three Precious Saints in Damo Academy, Four Vajras before Luohan Hall” – the martial world widely spread these two lines describing Shaolin Temple’s strongest martial artists. The so-called “Four Great Vajras” were naturally the four divine monks “Zhi, Ding, Yin, Zhen,” but those “Three Precious Saints” weren’t three people but solely one old monk with the Buddhist name “Tianjue.” His seniority was even higher than the Four Vajras by one generation. In his lifetime he had only taken one disciple – Yang Suguan.
This divine monk’s martial arts were extremely high, practicing the “Three Treasures of Fist, Palm, and Sword.” For decades he hadn’t stepped outside the temple gates once. Even the revered Abbot rarely saw him – he was Shaolin’s temple treasure. In that day’s capital battle, Yang Suguan had relied solely on his master-taught ultimate technique “Nirvana Rebirth” to match Zhuo Lingzhao. If the disciple was already like this, Monk Tianjue’s martial arts prowess was naturally imaginable.
But though Monk Tianjue’s martial arts were strong, twenty years ago he took vows for some reason and since then never left the temple gates, as if retired. Over these years, as martial world experts emerged in generations – first “Nine Provinces Sword King” Fang Zijing, then “World’s Greatest” Ning Bufan and “Kunlun Sword God” Zhuo Lingzhao – each generation had people claiming supreme martial arts. To prevent Monk Tianjue from reviving competitive thoughts, Ling Zhi consistently warned monks not to let such rumors enter the temple. Otherwise, with Monk Tianjue’s strong and competitive nature, he would definitely descend the mountain again to seek expert duels, adding more killing to the martial world.
Now Yang Suguan spoke like this, actually wanting to inform Monk Tianjue of Ning Bufan’s retirement – this violated Shaolin Temple’s great taboo. The monks couldn’t help changing color, even someone as rash as Ling Zhen felt alarmed.
Ling Zhi said, “Junior Brother Yang is still young and doesn’t know many things. Don’t rashly cause trouble. With great difficulty Master Uncle has settled his heart to cultivate Buddhist teachings without creating killing karma – what great merit this is! You must be careful and absolutely not let him know of Ning Bufan’s sword retirement. If he wants to descend the mountain for martial contests, who could restrain him?”
Though Yang Suguan was Monk Tianjue’s disciple, he wasn’t very familiar with his master’s youthful exploits. He could only repeatedly agree, though his heart disagreed.
After everyone had the vegetarian meal, Yang Suguan claimed urgent official business and immediately took leave. Abbot Ling Zhi agreed and sent out the two high monks Ling Ding and Ling Zhen to accompany him, also giving a personally written letter requesting the junior brother present it to Zhuo Lingzhao, hoping Zhuo Lingzhao would hand over the culprit who killed Yanling Escort Agency and release Ling Yin and other Shaolin disciples, so the two sides could reconcile and jointly maintain martial world justice. Before departure, he repeatedly instructed that unless absolutely necessary, they must not rashly start conflicts and create more killing karma.
Everyone descended the mountain to find Wei Zizhuang had already prepared horses and provisions, waiting with the two young women. Seeing Yang Suguan had invited the two great experts Ling Ding and Ling Zhen to accompany them, his heart was even more delighted. With both Shaolin and Wudang’s solid experts in their group, their lineup was so strong that probably no one in the current world could match them. Even if the “Kunlun Thirteen Swords” assembled, they had nothing to fear.
Everyone left Mount Song, each riding fine horses, heading grandly toward Xiliang. Along the way, passing various county towns, they rested at government post stations. Everywhere they went, Yang Suguan took out his Ministry of War token, and local officials all complied completely, entertaining them with good wine and food.
Yan Ting and Juan’er were heartbroken over their uncle’s death and remained gloomy and unhappy throughout the journey. Wu Dingyuan saw this and could only feel heartache and worry, but had no solution.
After another ten-plus days, they had entered Shaanxi Province. Wei Zizhuang said, “From here westward, we’ll be within Jiang Chong’s sphere of influence. We must be very careful and preferably take small roads.”
Ling Zhen raised his voice loudly, “How can such a large Shaanxi Province be called one person’s territory?”
Wei Zizhuang smiled bitterly, “This Shaanxi Military Governor is none other than Jiang Chong’s blood brother Jiang Yi. This person is cruel and ruthless, greedy and lustful – people call him ‘Jiang the Fierce Tiger.’ Jiang Yi not only holds the Military Governor position but also serves as Commander-in-Chief, commanding a hundred thousand troops with immense power. If we rashly encounter Shaanxi provincial troops, we’ll inevitably have disputes.”
Ling Zhen said loudly, “We Shaolin monks walking the martial world have never feared any fierce tigers, straight tigers, or crooked, slanted, flowery, colorful things. If Lord Wei is afraid, he can take small roads himself. We senior brothers absolutely won’t bow to Jiang Chong!”
Ling Ding saw Wei Zizhuang’s expression turn ugly and, fearing his junior brother’s rash words had already offended him, quickly mediated, “Our westward journey has two purposes: first, to rescue Junior Brother Ling Yin and seek justice at Kunlun Mountain; second, to protect Junior Brother Suguan and ensure his safe arrival in Xiliang. In this old monk’s view, we shouldn’t provoke trouble – better to follow Lord Wei’s suggestion and take small roads.”
Ling Zhen was also an old martial world hand and understood his senior brother’s consideration for the overall situation. He didn’t dare oppose but muttered to himself, “Jiang the Fierce Tiger? If this monk encounters him, I’ll boil his tiger bones for medicine.”
Juan’er heard them repeatedly cursing Jiang Chong and asked, “Who exactly is this Jiang Chong? Why does everyone hate him so much?”
Wu Dingyuan snorted, “This person is a great treacherous minister. All people with aspirations hate him thoroughly.”
Juan’er quickly said, “So all aspiring people hate him – then count me in too. Otherwise I’d be lonely and become an ‘unaspiring person’ – how embarrassing would that be!” Everyone laughed heartily, sweeping away the previous gloom.
Wei Zizhuang had come to regard the pitiful Yan Ting and adorable Juan’er as his own relatives. Hearing Juan’er speak with the intention of smoothing things over for him, his heart was very pleased. “Thank you both masters for considering the overall situation. From now on we’ll take mountain roads to avoid government troops.”
Everyone discussed and decided to travel entirely by mountain paths and small roads from southern Shaanxi onward. Ordinary people traveling far usually took main roads, fearing encountering bandits on small paths. But Yang Suguan’s group was exactly the opposite – they had many martial arts experts, all top figures from Shaolin and Wudang. What petty thieves could they fear? Rather, they feared secret harm from factory guards and officials.
After taking small roads, they indeed saw no martial world figures and very few government troops. Though the scenery along the way wasn’t necessarily beautiful, with no one causing trouble, even the worst scenery counted as good mountains and waters. Later, reaching a small town, Yang Suguan even bought two horse carts for everyone’s journey, reducing countless hardships.
After traveling over half a month, the season entered Great Cold and they neared Liangzhou. No more hills and mountains were visible around them – everywhere they looked was open wilderness. Gansu’s climate was dry, and though bitterly cold now, there was very little snow on the ground. At night, the desert formed thin frost, and viewed in moonlight, the sand sea looked like crystal, truly sparkling and translucent like a fairyland. Most of them were Central Plains people who had never seen such scenery. Wu Dingyuan, being local-born, explained things along the way to pass boring time.
This day everyone had reached outside Xiliang city. Wu Dingyuan suddenly became grave and silent. Yang Suguan saw this and, guessing he worried about his fugitive status, said, “Brother Wu, don’t worry. You’re now not only the court’s envoy but also Lord Liu’s beloved general. If that Prefect Lu Qingzheng wants to make things difficult for you, I’ll step forward to handle it.”
Wei Zizhuang also advised, “Exactly so. Lord Yang holds the rank of Ministry of War Secretary. With him here, what’s there to worry about regarding those official trifles?”
But Wu Dingyuan shook his head, “I’m not afraid of that prefect troubling me. Even if he does, my rotten life isn’t worth worrying about.” Everyone heard his heavy tone and felt alarmed. Juan’er nearby asked, “If you’re not even afraid of death, what’s bothering you?”
Wu Dingyuan sighed and looked at the vast yellow sand, “Since the Yanling Escort Agency case occurred, it’s been over a year. I, unworthy as Xiliang’s constable, not only couldn’t bring Kunlun Mountain’s murderers to justice but ended up fleeing for my life. Every time I think deeply at night, how can I bear it?” He clenched his fists and gritted his teeth, “I… if I can’t avenge the victims and seek justice this time, I… I won’t rest in peace even in death!” His eyes actually reddened as he spoke.
Yang Suguan advised, “Brother Wu, don’t blame yourself. These people are extraordinary. Don’t mention you couldn’t handle this case – even the Minister of Justice or a Six Ministries joint trial would probably be powerless.”
Wu Dingyuan sighed deeply and shook his head, “I only hope this westward journey can help Lord Liu find powerful evidence to bring down that treacherous minister Jiang Chong – that would count as eliminating harm for the people.” Everyone nodded in agreement.
Wu Dingyuan then led everyone into the city. He feared Lu Qingzheng had ulterior motives – if he knew Wu Dingyuan had returned to Xiliang, he would surely set traps to deal with them all, so he quietly entered the city without alerting the local authorities.
Entering the city, they saw Xiliang wasn’t very grand, with only three or five inns on the streets. Wei Zizhuang frowned, “This Xiliang city isn’t very bustling. If we outsiders stay at an inn, we’ll be noticed immediately.”
Wu Dingyuan said, “This needn’t worry us. Everyone can stay at my humble residence for a few days. We won’t delay here long anyway, so we can manage for a while.” He led everyone toward his mansion.
On the road they passed a street where they heard someone shouting angrily in the distance, “Dead scum! I say you’re stealing, so you’re a thief! Still dare to argue!” Another person cried, “I’m not a thief! Not a thief!”
Everyone found this exchange strange and walked toward the sound. After several steps, they saw an official in constable’s uniform holding a Powerful Rod, wildly beating a vendor-like man kneeling on the ground, who cried to heaven and earth in pain. A crowd of black heads surrounded them, all discussing among themselves.
Juan’er stood on tiptoe to watch. Seeing the constable’s extreme cruelty, she couldn’t help frowning, “How can this constable beat people in the street? How can there be such officials in this world?”
The neighborhood people hearing Juan’er’s words trembled in fear, all shocked.
Juan’er was slightly surprised, “What’s wrong? Did I say something wrong?”
An old man lowered his voice and whispered, “Miss, you must be careful with your words. This newly appointed constable is extremely vicious. In just over a year since taking office, he’s made the people suffer terribly. If he says your father is your mother, your father must become your mother. He lords it over everyone daily, only knowing how to bully the common people. If he heard your words, you’d be in big trouble.”
Yan Ting heard how arrogant this constable was and felt shocked, asking Wu Dingyuan, “Lord Wu, do you know that constable? Was he always this bad?”
Wu Dingyuan’s face was iron-blue as he sneered, “Heh, this fellow was just a clown before. I never thought that after I left for a year, Liao Hua could become a vanguard.” The two young women were quite puzzled, not knowing what he meant.
It turned out this new constable was none other than Wu Dingyuan’s former subordinate A’San. This man was the secretary’s brother-in-law who was never well-liked – shallow in experience and poor in skills. Wu Dingyuan didn’t know why Lu Qingzheng had promoted this person. Seeing A’San acting tyrannically with such an evil appearance, he was so angry his seven apertures blazed with fire, wishing he could beat A’San to death on the spot.
Yang Suguan was a perceptive man. Seeing blue veins bulging on Wu Dingyuan’s forehead, he must be unable to restrain himself and would probably strike soon. He moved forward, placing his hand on Wu Dingyuan’s shoulder and whispered, “Let’s go. Don’t cause more trouble.”
Wu Dingyuan glared fiercely at A’San. Thinking this office was also his years of careful management, he never expected discipline to deteriorate to this extent today. His heart was very indignant. Though Yang Suguan pulled him, he was still reluctant to leave. Yang Suguan and Wei Zizhuang half-dragged, half-carried him away from the scene.
Everyone reached Wu Dingyuan’s old residence and was about to open the door when Wu Dingyuan looked up and suddenly saw the prefect’s seal on the door. His face turned pale as he said tremblingly, “Lu Qingzheng, you’re really ruthless!”
When he was falsely accused and framed, ending up dismissed and fleeing for his life, that was one thing. But this Lu Qingzheng was truly vicious, even sealing his house. Everyone saw his whole body trembling – he was truly extremely angry.
In his wild fury, Wu Dingyuan was about to tear off the seal when Yang Suguan quickly stopped him, “Brother Wu, no hurry! Better leave this seal alone to avoid alerting the enemy.” Wu Dingyuan heard this and could only sigh deeply, stopping his hand. Everyone then climbed over the wall to enter.
That night everyone settled in and discussed future plans. Yang Suguan said, “Now we’ll split into two groups. Dingyuan and I will investigate clues from the old case. I ask Guard Wei and Master Ling Ding to gather information in the city to see if anyone knows the location of Yexian’s former subordinates’ remains.”
Everyone was about to agree when suddenly Ling Zhen said loudly, “Junior Brother Yang, everyone has tasks – how did you miss me?”
Ling Zhen heard Wu Dingyuan and Yang Suguan were one group, Wei Zizhuang and Ling Ding another, with tasks assigned but himself alone omitted. In his urgency, he called out.
Ling Ding knew his junior brother was crude in conduct. If he went into the city to investigate, he’d probably expose himself in a few words. He quickly advised, “Junior brother, rest more these days. If you want to achieve merit, there’s no rush.”
Ling Zhen said loudly, “What bird merit do I want? I came here only wanting to fight with that old Zhuo Lingzhao. Who cares about damned merit? You can do whatever you want, just don’t lock me in this room, or I’ll return to Shaolin tomorrow!” Everyone saw Ling Zhen being unreasonable and didn’t know what to do.
Yang Suguan’s expression remained calm as he smiled lightly, “Who said we want to leave senior brother here? If senior brother wants to go out on official business, we’d be delighted.”
Ling Zhen laughed heartily, “Now that sounds human!”
Ling Ding saw Yang Suguan accommodating his junior brother and quickly said, “Ling Zhen is naturally crude. Junior Brother Yang needn’t take his words seriously.”
Yang Suguan smiled slightly and waved his hand, “Senior brother needn’t worry. I have my arrangements.”
He beckoned to Yan Ting, “Miss Yan Ting, please come here.”
Yan Ting’s face reddened as she said softly, “What are your instructions, Lord Yang?”
Yang Suguan smiled, “Miss, please don’t call me Lord – that’s too formal. Just call me big brother.”
Yan Ting’s face grew even redder as she stammered, “Yang… Big Brother Yang…”
Wu Dingyuan was still angry about Lu Qingzheng’s cruelty, but seeing Yan Ting’s expression toward Yang Suguan still felt uncomfortable. He quickly turned his head away, pretending not to see. Wei Zizhuang just smiled, as if accustomed to girls’ shy behavior toward Yang Suguan, not minding it.
Yang Suguan smiled slightly at Yan Ting, then pointed at Ling Zhen, “This senior brother of mine is naturally active and fears being cooped up indoors. But our coming to the western frontier cannot be without someone to coordinate centrally and issue commands. After thinking it over, I’m afraid I must trouble the young lady to bear this responsibility.”
Yan Ting exclaimed, “You… you want me to coordinate centrally and issue commands?”
Everyone was also amazed, asking, “Junior Brother Yang, what do you mean?”
Ling Zhen always loved glory and achievement. Hearing this position was so important yet assigned to this little girl Yan Ting, he paid attention.
Yang Suguan winked at everyone and smiled, “We’ll all be out and about these days and cannot be without someone to coordinate centrally. But this person must first have high martial arts and clear judgment, second must be able to steady their mind and firmly guard this place to grasp everyone’s whereabouts and rescue them at any time.” He took out several fire rockets and gave them to everyone, “If there’s any danger or fighting these days, please fire rockets into the air. Miss Yan Ting, seeing flames shooting skyward, will naturally rush from the mansion to assist.”
Yan Ting’s face went pale, her heart pounding rapidly. Nearby, Ling Zhen licked his lips as if greatly envious.
Wei Zizhuang was also a cunning old fox. Hearing Yang Suguan speak, he knew he was intentionally teasing Ling Zhen to provoke him into volunteering to guard the mansion. He pretended to laugh, “Exactly so. Miss Yan Ting’s martial arts are high – she should take on this great responsibility.”
Though Yan Ting was intelligent, she was straightforward and couldn’t see through these schemes. She quickly waved her hands, “Such a great responsibility – I cannot…”
Yang Suguan frowned, “Even you won’t agree… sigh, what can we do? This central coordinator is extremely important – we really cannot do without someone. Among our group, you have the best patience and highest martial arts. I thought only you could guard this place, but you also refuse. What should we do?”
Yan Ting was startled, “I… my martial arts are highest?”
Yang Suguan ignored her and said to Juan’er, “Since your senior sister refuses, you do it. I think you have extraordinary concentration – this central coordination position belongs to none but you.”
Yan Ting couldn’t help crying out in alarm – this Juan’er was like a little monkey since childhood. When had she ever been associated with “concentration”? She was about to object when she saw Wei Zizhuang wink at her as if telling her not to interfere. Yan Ting looked confused and could only hesitate to speak.
Juan’er was also a little clever one who knew Yang Suguan was joking. She immediately laughed, “Great! I love important tasks most. Don’t worry – leave it to me. This heroine has high martial arts and keen perception, so naturally those little thieves will be easily captured!” She gestured and laughed continuously.
Yang Suguan laughed heartily, “Wonderful! With Jiuhua Mountain’s heroine stepping forward, great matters will surely be worry-free!”
Suddenly someone roared, “No good!” Everyone hearing this angry shout quickly turned to see Ling Zhen with bulging angry eyes shouting, “Junior Brother Yang, what are you doing? How can such an important matter be entrusted to a child!”
Yang Suguan frowned, “But everyone is unwilling to stay here. Only Miss Juan’er is most understanding of the big picture.”
Juan’er put on a bitter face and sighed, “Yes! Only because you, Brother Yang, pleaded earnestly did this heroine righteously and loyally agree… sigh… Great Master, you still criticize – how the world has declined!” Everyone hearing her nonsense and adult-like pretense secretly laughed.
Wei Zizhuang also frowned, “Juan’er speaks correctly. This central coordinator is extremely important. Though I want to do it, my skills are far inferior… sigh, still not as nimble as this child Juan’er.”
Ling Zhen’s face flushed red as he shouted, “He… damn it! Since none of you are capable, let me do it!”
Yang Suguan pretended surprise, “Senior brother, didn’t you want to go out? Now suddenly asking you to stay here – isn’t that too forced?”
Ling Zhen said loudly, “No more nonsense! This central coordination position is extraordinary – except for my Ling Zhen’s ‘Mighty Vajra Finger,’ no one can bear this heavy responsibility. You go ahead with peace of mind!”
Yang Suguan looked reluctantly distressed and sighed, “Very well! But this central coordinator must sit steadily in the center and cannot leave his post without permission. Otherwise, if we encounter danger and can’t get reinforcements in time, what would we do?”
Ling Zhen jumped up and down in rage, “Don’t look down on me! If I leave this main gate even one step these days, I’m a turtle, bastard, great-grandson!”
Yang Suguan said happily, “Senior brother, is this true?”
Ling Zhen angrily said, “What are you still doubting? I keep my word!” He patted his chest repeatedly, fearing others wouldn’t believe him.
Juan’er saw Ling Zhen fall into the trap and immediately giggled, coming to add insult to injury, “You said it yourself – even going out to stroll or buy a pastry won’t work!”
Ling Zhen loved sweets most in life. Suddenly hearing this, his heart was greatly alarmed as he said tremblingly, “Even going out to buy a pastry won’t work?”
Juan’er snorted and said decisively, “No good!”
Ling Zhen thought of future suffering, his face already iron-blue, panicking, “Terrible! This mouth of mine is most greedy – what should I do now?” He looked troubled, wanting to go back on his word, but seeing everyone’s contemptuous expressions, he could only force himself to endure.
Juan’er saw his fear and immediately sneered, “You’re a dignified member of the Four Great Vajras who keeps his word and absolutely cannot sneak out. If you want pastries in the future, you can only plead with me!”
Ling Zhen was overjoyed and immediately begged Juan’er, calling her old Buddha and little Buddha continuously, fearing he’d have no pastries to eat in the future.
Everyone seeing his appearance laughed endlessly. Ling Ding felt ashamed to the extreme and angrily walked out of the room.
Everyone settled down and divided tasks these days. Yang Suguan and Wu Dingyuan were responsible for case investigation, traveling by day and night together to gather information in the city.
This night at the third watch, the two changed into night clothes and were about to go out investigating. Yang Suguan asked, “If we want to discover this sheepskin’s secret, Brother Wu, do you have any ideas?”
Wu Dingyuan said, “This sheepskin was found by former Prefect Liang Zhiyi. I think his mansion must have some clues left behind. We might investigate there tonight.”
Yang Suguan said happily, “Brother Dingyuan is indeed a constable by background – your insight is extraordinary.”
The two leaped onto rooftops with Wu Dingyuan leading toward Liang Zhiyi’s former residence.
When Wu Dingyuan investigated the Yanling Escort Agency case years ago, he hadn’t searched Liang Zhiyi’s home. Later hearing Qi Bochuan’s words, he learned this sheepskin was related to Prefect Liang, but after knowing the secret, he was pursued by Lu Qingzheng’s men and never had opportunity to investigate. Now returning to Xiliang, investigating his former superior’s mansion became the first priority.
The two moved with careful steps, leaping and bounding on civilian rooftops. Soon they reached a large mansion. Yang Suguan looked down to see this residence was deep and dark – apparently long uninhabited.
Wu Dingyuan said, “Since Prefect Liang died suddenly in office, his wife and son moved away from here. This house has been vacant and unused for three years.”
The two touched down and jumped down. After circling the house exterior and confirming no one was there, they slipped inside.
Entering the house, they saw it full of dust, but furniture and chairs hadn’t been moved – many belongings remained properly in the rooms. Wu Dingyuan whispered, “Never thought Young Master Liang left so hastily he didn’t even pack his things.”
Yang Suguan nodded, “It certainly looks that way.” The two searched up and down in the house, looking everywhere for suspicious items.
While busy, they suddenly heard someone outside say, “This is Prefect Liang’s old residence.” Then someone said, “Good! Let’s go in and look.” Yang and Wu were greatly shocked, not expecting someone to come in the middle of the night. They quickly flashed into the study, each finding a corner to hide.
They heard footsteps as someone walked in first. Yang and Wu peered through door cracks to see a man with a face like red dates – it was Embroidered Uniform Guard Commander An Daojing. Wu Dingyuan gasped, thinking, “This man came too!”
Yang Suguan also frowned, clearly not expecting to see this person.
Behind An Daojing followed three men. Wu Dingyuan looked carefully – one was tall and large named “Thunder Roar” Shan Guoyi, one had a fair face called “Nine-Tailed Dragon” Yun Sanlang, and another had extraordinary features with broad shoulders and thick arms, a pair of thick eyebrows very imposing – this was “Snake and Crane Twin Movements” Hao Zhenxiang.
Wu Dingyuan thought, “Even Hao Zhenxiang came – it seems An Daojing is determined to get this sheepskin.”
The four entered the house but hadn’t yet searched when Shan Guoyi and Yun Sanlang each pulled up stools to sit. An Daojing glared at them and said sternly, “Why are you so lazy? You haven’t even started looking for things yet you sit down – what’s this about?”
The two hearing this just yawned and lazily stood up, wandering around the room – flipping here, stirring there, all perfunctory.
An Daojing angrily said, “What are you doing! Help me search properly!” Yun Sanlang smiled apologetically, “Commander, don’t get so angry. We’ll search carefully and definitely find that thing.”
An Daojing cursed, “Hurry up! Stop talking nonsense here!”
While scolding, suddenly Hao Zhenxiang said, “Commander, what exactly does this thing look like? Just based on Master Liang’s manuscript notes, it seems very hard to find.”
An Daojing sighed, “No choice. Our Lord Jiang personally ordered that this manuscript is very important and absolutely cannot fall into others’ hands. No matter what, we must try our best to find it.”
Hao Zhenxiang nodded, “I see.”
An Daojing walked to the bookcase, “I heard Prefect Liang was very learned. Perhaps he tucked that manuscript between books.” Hearing this, Hao Zhenxiang walked over and carefully searched through the room’s books.
Yang and Wu hearing this immediately had the same thought. They were in the study – seeing the four outside hadn’t yet searched in, they also began flipping through books, wanting to find the manuscript first.
The two moved slightly – though the sound was low, Hao Zhenxiang heard it. He hummed and said, “There’s something in the room.”
An Daojing hearing this quickly gathered his internal energy to listen. Sure enough, he also heard faint sounds. He gave Hao Zhenxiang a look and whispered, “Go have a look.”
Hao Zhenxiang without a word immediately touched his feet and rushed into the study. Yang Suguan’s expression changed – not expecting this person’s internal energy was so deep, discovering their location in moments. He took out a handkerchief to cover his face and indicated Wu Dingyuan should also hide his identity.
Wu Dingyuan had just covered his face when they heard Hao Zhenxiang already approaching. Yang Suguan pushed the bookshelf, and with a rumbling sound, the room’s bookshelf immediately toppled, blocking the doorway.
Hao Zhenxiang rushed to the door to see it blocked by the heavy bookshelf, with two masked strangers standing inside. He sneered, “Where did these thieves come from? Making trouble here in the middle of the night?”
He concentrated energy in his chest and pushed with both palms, already sending the bookshelf at the door flying. With a thunderous crash, the huge bookshelf hit the wall, shaking roof dust down as countless books scattered and flew through the air.
Yang Suguan seeing his martial arts so formidable quickly drew his sword – with a swish, the long sword already thrust toward Hao Zhenxiang.
Hao Zhenxiang sneered, “Good thief – your swordwork isn’t weak.” He swept his foot, kicking up a book that shot with fierce momentum straight at Yang Suguan’s face.
Yang Suguan heard the whistling wind and knew the true force attached to the book was extraordinary – if he took it directly, he’d probably suffer internal injury. Not daring to be careless, seeing the book coming, he quickly dodged aside. The book crashed through a window frame with a bang and fell into the courtyard.
Hao Zhenxiang saw Yang Suguan’s agile movement and immediately waved both palms rapidly. Where strong wind reached, countless books on the ground floated up with the air current, sent flying toward Yang and Wu by palm wind.
Wu Dingyuan saw the bad situation and quickly rolled on the ground to dodge. Yang Suguan wouldn’t yield – he said “Hey!” and rapidly swung his long sword, creating a huge light sphere that instantly cut countless books in half.
Hao Zhenxiang saw his exquisite swordwork and immediately increased hand force. Endless whooshing sounds filled the air as all books in the study became hidden weapons in his hands, flying toward Yang Suguan one by one.
At this time An Daojing had arrived. Seeing Hao Zhenxiang had the upper hand, he wasn’t hurried to enter but stayed outside to support. Watching Yang Suguan’s sword light flashing as one sword stroke cut a bound book in half, the book split in the air and something floated out – clearly two pieces of paper.
An Daojing sharp-eyed immediately called, “Quick! Quick! That’s the thing! Quickly grab those paper pieces!”
Hao Zhenxiang’s right hand shot out and grabbed the lower half paper piece.
Yang Suguan hearing this was delighted, thinking, “I’ve searched everywhere for this – it came without effort.” Knowing the paper piece was extremely important, he quickly used nimble movement, immediately lunging forward with his body gliding like a flying swallow through mid-air. His sword thrust out and already pierced the upper half paper piece falling from the air.
Hao Zhenxiang shouted, “Let go!” Drawing both palms in a half-circle, he struck toward Yang Suguan.
Yang Suguan summoned true energy, twisted in mid-air to avoid Hao Zhenxiang’s mighty unmatched palms, returned his sword to his chest, reached out to grab the paper piece and stuffed it in his chest.
An Daojing couldn’t restrain himself and rushed in with raised blade urgently, “Instructor Hao! Don’t let these two escape!”
Yang Suguan seeing he had the item didn’t want to continue entangling. He took a deep breath, sword light flashed creating seven cold stars pointing toward An Daojing’s vital points. An Daojing recognizing the danger quickly dodged aside. Yang Suguan seeing no opportunity quickly retreated, about to withdraw immediately.
Hao Zhenxiang seeing he was about to leave immediately waved both hands – right hand like crane’s beak, left palm striking out – exactly the ultimate move of “Snake and Crane Twin Movements.” Palm force suddenly burst forth toward Yang Suguan’s chest.
Yang Suguan saw his move was exquisite – his long sword probably couldn’t thrust out before his body would be severely injured. He could only raise his palm to his chest to hard-block this earth-shattering palm.
With a thunderous “boom,” the two palm forces collided. Yang Suguan’s body flew backward, already crashing through an earthen wall. Hao Zhenxiang and An Daojing saw earth and stones flying everywhere with dust filling the air – unable to see the situation clearly, they didn’t dare advance rashly and each stepped back, gathering energy defensively.
An Daojing fearing the enemy would escape by opportunity quickly called out, “Come! Quickly go outside to intercept!” Yun Sanlang and Shan Guoyi had already heard strange sounds from the room and now quickly responded, rushing out the main gate to block.
Wu Dingyuan seeing Yang Suguan at a disadvantage quickly took advantage of the chaos to jump out the window. Seeing him fallen on the ground, he couldn’t help being alarmed and quickly went forward to help him up, whispering, “How is it? Are you internally injured?”
Yang Suguan opened his eyes and smiled slightly, “Nothing serious.” He flipped up and sheathed his sword.
Just then someone behind called, “Here they are!”
Yun Sanlang was seen carrying weapons, hurriedly running toward the two. Wu Dingyuan was about to take out his silver shuttle to resist when Yang Suguan shook his head, “We have the item – no need to fight hard.”
He gathered and concentrated energy, supporting Wu Dingyuan’s waist. Both feet touched down as the two leaped onto the rooftop together and flew away like birds.
An Daojing and others chased out but were already a step too late, sighing endlessly.
Hao Zhenxiang looked at the pitch-black night sky and pondered, “That person just now was young but had excellent martial arts – wonder what his background is.”
An Daojing frowned, “No matter who he is, we must root him out, or we’ll definitely invite endless trouble.” He said to Hao Zhenxiang, “Give me the paper piece.”
Hao Zhenxiang quickly agreed and handed over the paper piece as instructed.
An Daojing said, “You haven’t seen the writing on this paper piece yet, right?”
Hao Zhenxiang’s heart jumped as he quickly said, “Subordinate was busy chasing the enemy – no time to look.”
An Daojing breathed a sigh of relief. He glanced at the paper and his face immediately went pale, “No mistake – this is the thing.” He closed his eyes tight, fearing to look more, then opened his mouth and swallowed the paper piece.
Everyone seeing his strange behavior couldn’t help crying out in alarm.
Yang Suguan and Wu Dingyuan gathered energy and rushed directly back to the house, immediately alerting Ling Ding and others. Everyone came out to see Yang Suguan pale-faced, sitting cross-legged on the kang, already circulating energy to heal.
Ling Ding walked forward and placed his hand on Yang Suguan’s back, transmitting thick, pure internal energy. After a moment, Yang Suguan’s face turned red and the stifling energy in his body greatly decreased.
This Ling Ding’s power was indeed deep – in less than an incense stick’s time, he had suppressed Yang Suguan’s internal injury. The wound seemed fine now. Wei Zizhuang, Wu Dingyuan and others watching from the side couldn’t help feeling admiration.
Ling Ding asked, “What person has such power to injure you like this?”
Yang Suguan said, “An Embroidered Uniform Guard officer – don’t know his background.”
Wu Dingyuan quickly said, “This person is the weapons instructor in the Embroidered Uniform Guards, surnamed Hao, given name Zhenxiang. He used to be chief instructor in the Ministry of Justice. He’s the one who injured Yang Suguan like this.”
Everyone hearing this person was the Embroidered Uniform Guards’ weapons instructor felt alarmed – it seemed An Daojing was determined to succeed this time, even bringing out such experts.
Yang Suguan smiled, “Regardless, this palm wasn’t taken for nothing.” He took out the half paper piece from his chest and showed it to everyone.
Wei Zizhuang asked curiously, “What is this thing?”
Yang Suguan said, “This paper piece was seized from Liang Zhiyi’s mansion – reportedly his manuscript from when alive. Must be very important.”
Everyone felt excited and quickly said, “Hurry up and read it aloud.”
Yang Suguan nodded and read by candlelight: “The gentleman’s way values heavenly virtue – above is called righteousness, below is called law…” It seemed this paper contained Liang Zhiyi’s daily reading notes. This Prefect Liang was eloquently talented, writing extensively. Everyone had no mind to pay attention and felt stifled listening.
Wu Dingyuan sighed, “Seems this paper piece is completely useless.”
But Yang Suguan ignored everyone and continued reading. Reading along, he suddenly reached a line of tiny characters noted beside the marginal comments. Yang Suguan’s spirits lifted, knowing this line must have significance. He quickly waved his hand to signal everyone to listen carefully, then read aloud: “Through investigation of Yumen Pass soldiers, learned Jiang Chong made two trips to Tianshan within fifteen years – reasons unclear. Jingtai fifth year, third month – Jiang thief personally led fifty thousand troops in two routes to Tianshan, only twenty thousand returned, rest all missing. Also Jingtai tenth year, sixth month – again led thirty thousand to Tianshan, miserably only three thousand returned.”
Wu Dingyuan was quite surprised, “Jiang Chong went to Tianshan twice in succession – what was he doing? Was he trying to capture Khan Yexian?”
Yang Suguan shook his head and looked down at the paper piece, continuing, “According to old soldiers’ accounts, Jiang thief searched for one person for many years without success, so he was willing to risk life and death repeatedly violating dangerous passes. This person is extraordinary, involved with the world’s fortune. If he’s not dead, Jiang thief cannot rest easy. I asked about this person’s background – the old soldier indicated his surname. Hearing it, I laughed greatly – this person died years ago, how could he still be in the world? If this person were still in the human realm, wouldn’t heaven and earth’s order be chaotic? How would the court ministers conduct themselves? Therefore this matter is absolutely unbelievable – must be mistaken transmission…”
Ling Ding pondered, “Who exactly is this person to be so formidable?”
Wu Dingyuan anxiously urged, “Who exactly is this person? Quick, look further!”
Yang Suguan held up the paper piece and shook his head, “The paper piece breaks here – can’t see the text below.”
Everyone cried “Ah!” in great disappointment.
Wu Dingyuan frowned, “What exactly did Master Liang mean? Really puzzling to guess.”
Yang Suguan said, “From the literal meaning, there must be some important person in Tianshan who keeps Jiang Chong anxious day and night.”
Wei Zizhuang asked, “Could this person also be related to the sheepskin?”
Yang Suguan shook his head, “That’s unknown. Anyway, this manuscript comes from Master Liang’s hand and must have some background. We must be very careful these days.”
Everyone talked more but couldn’t guess the meaning. After half an hour, seeing dawn already breaking, they each returned to their rooms for brief rest.
