Chapter 6: Fire Greedy Single Blade

After the birthday banquet at the Gu family residence, Lu Yun seemed to have become a different person. He spent all day wandering around the markets and taverns, not even going to the training grounds. Though he never failed to collect his monthly salary, it all went down his throat as wine. Wu Dingyuan saw this and was naturally angry, but he was entangled with official duties and had difficulty intervening. Sometimes when he couldn’t help but scold Lu Yun a few words, seeing Lu Yun’s dejected manner, he knew there was no remedy.

This night Lu Yun again returned to the supervisor’s mansion drunk and reeking of alcohol. It was already late, but Lu Yun didn’t want to rest. Alone, he took a wine bottle and sat in the courtyard, staring blankly.

While in a drunken stupor, he suddenly heard voices from the study – it was the steward’s voice: “This Master Lu is too frivolous. Not only does he not come to work every day, but he still collects his cavalry archer’s salary without fail, drinking and playing all day. Looking at his scholarly appearance, I really don’t know where his learning went.”

Another person in the study, sounding like the accountant, said: “This Master Lu seems to be our master’s lifesaver. The master indulges him this way because he wants to repay his kindness.”

Lu Yun heard them talking about him. Though he had no intention of eavesdropping, their conversation reached his ears sentence by sentence.

The steward snorted: “These days it’s hard to be a good person! I heard the master went to great lengths trying to get this fellow into General Liu’s mansion as an official. Who knew this ignorant fellow would dare spout nonsense in the general’s mansion, causing our master to be severely scolded? Isn’t that ridiculous?”

The accountant was shocked: “I’ve talked with this Master Lu several times. He does have some insights – how could he be so foolish as to cause such trouble?”

The steward laughed coldly: “He has insights? Let me tell you, this fellow was originally a noodle vendor outside Prince’s Alley! Where have your eyes gone?” He paused and continued: “Do you know that day at Marquis Liu’s mansion, our Lord Wu had to kneel and kowtow to those military officers begging for mercy! Otherwise, with the way that Lu fellow spoke, would those military gentlemen have let him live to this day?”

Hearing this, Lu Yun felt as if a bucket of cold water had been poured over him, sobering him seven or eight parts. He thought: “So there was such a thing that day! I never imagined Brother Wu would kowtow and kneel before those military officers to protect me. I truly wronged him.” He thought again: “How can I remain here? Brother Wu has been benevolent and righteous to me to the utmost – why should I continue troubling him and making him worry about such trivial matters?”

Lu Yun stood in the courtyard, straightened his clothes, and a surge of pride arose naturally. He thought: “If this place won’t keep me, there are other places that will. What’s so special about the capital? If I go back to selling noodles, what of it?” He casually threw away the wine bottle and strode toward the main gate.

At this time, Lu Yun viewed worldly affairs with extreme detachment. Life’s joys and sorrows, partings and reunions – these few decades were like passing clouds to him. He slowly walked out of the supervisor’s mansion. Wu Dingyuan had not yet returned home. Lu Yun knew that once he left this time, he would probably never return. Lu Yun didn’t even want to leave a letter – meeting by chance on the road and helping in times of injustice, such friendships were worthwhile, so why trouble others further? Just leave like this!

Lu Yun left the supervisor’s mansion and walked alone on the street, thinking about his affairs along the way. Unconsciously, he passed by the gate of the Gu family mansion again. His heart leaped as he thought: “Can I really not let go of Miss Gu? Could it be I keep thinking of her because I fear I’ll never see her again? What… what’s wrong with me?”

Lu Yun looked at the Gu family gate, knowing Gu Qianxi was inside. A voice in his heart shouted to see Gu Qianxi once, even just a glance would be good. With his current martial arts, climbing over the wall would be extremely easy. But when he tried to move his feet, his legs felt as if filled with lead, making each step extremely difficult.

“Does she… does she still remember me? Back then I was just a lowly servant, not even her relative… Which of those noble young masters in the capital isn’t a hundred times better than me? Why should I seek such trouble? Even if she still thinks of me, what can I do now? A destitute fugitive would only bring her sorrow.”

Lu Yun’s heart ached and he sighed, slowly walking away. He saw a small tavern by the roadside that was cold and empty, perfectly matching his current mood. Lu Yun sat down and called for a pot of wine, drinking alone with his heavy thoughts.

Lu Yun supported his forehead with his hand and looked across the street, where the Gu family buildings were faintly visible in the night. As wine entered his throat, he felt sorry for his circumstances and couldn’t help sighing deeply.

Suddenly, with a “thump,” a blade was heavily slammed onto the table. Lu Yun was startled and quickly looked up to see a large man with arms crossed and eyes like lightning staring at him.

Lu Yun was stunned and about to speak when the large man smiled: “Brother, you seem healthy and uninjured – why are you sighing so deeply?”

Before Lu Yun could answer, the large man sat down directly: “The night is still young – how about we drink a few cups together?”

Lu Yun looked carefully at the man. He appeared to be about thirty years old, with a high nose and eagle eyes, tall and broad-shouldered, extremely imposing in bearing, but Lu Yun didn’t know his background. The man took out an ingot of silver and threw it to the shopkeeper: “Tonight my friend and I will drink a few cups – serve us well.” The shopkeeper was overjoyed, bowing repeatedly and quickly preparing several hot dishes.

Lu Yun cupped his hands slightly and asked: “What is your honored name? How did you come to be here?” The large man’s gaze swept over him, his face showing a fierce expression: “I am surnamed Qin, given name Zhonghai.”

Lu Yun made a sound of recognition, feeling this name was familiar but not knowing where he had heard it.

Qin Zhonghai said: “I currently serve under General Zuo Congyi and have just returned from the northern frontier.”

Lu Yun’s mind flashed like lightning, remembering that day at the Liu mansion when discussing military affairs, Lieutenant Shi Ping had mentioned a young deputy general currently at the border assisting Zuo Congyi, seemingly called Qin Zhonghai. Could this be the very person before him? Lu Yun didn’t know why he would seek him out – could it be to avenge his rude words that day? He became slightly wary.

Qin Zhonghai said: “Since returning from the border, I’ve been in the capital only a few days. I heard from others about a young master who caused trouble at the Liu mansion, saying this person spoke arrogantly at General Liu’s residence and mocked Lord Shi Ping. Is this true?”

Lu Yun’s heart tensed, knowing he was getting to the point. He thought: “It seems this is another troublemaker. Since I don’t want to stay in the capital anyway, even if the current emperor gave me trouble, what would I fear?” Instead of being alarmed, he smiled and said lightly: “I found Lord Shi’s words laughable and extremely ignorant. For a moment my wild nature arose and I said a few extra words. I’ve had this temperament since childhood – I cannot tolerate right and wrong being confused.”

Qin Zhonghai said impassively: “According to what you say, General Zuo’s formation is indeed completely wrong and worthless? I also heard someone mention that you once claimed this formation would certainly be broken by the enemy within three months. Is this true?”

Lu Yun’s heart stirred, remembering that day he had boasted that if General Zuo’s mountain stronghold wasn’t captured within three months, he would give up his head. Could this person really be here to take his life? But at this time Lu Yun had long seen through worldly matters. Hearing Qin Zhonghai mention this, he was only slightly shocked before regaining his composure and smiling: “If General Qin wants to vent anger for Lord Shi and teach me a good lesson, Lu Yun won’t refuse and will gladly accompany you.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily, reached out to pour Lu Yun a cup of wine. Lu Yun raised his hand to receive it and was about to drink when suddenly a gust of palm wind attacked – Qin Zhonghai had actually struck out at him. Lu Yun saw his palm technique was exquisite, striking diagonally toward his chest, and could not help but defend.

Lu Yun gave a light whistle and reached out to block the man’s wrist, using thirty percent of his true power. Qin Zhonghai smiled: “Well done!” His technique changed, three fingers came together in a crane’s beak, aiming directly at the acupoints on Lu Yun’s wrist with unimaginably fast technique.

Lu Yun carefully observed Qin Zhonghai’s moves – no matter how he attacked or defended, the nine acupoints on his wrist would be struck. In his panic, without time to think carefully, he instantly clenched his five fingers, changing from a hand blade to a straight fist, punching directly at Qin Zhonghai’s face. If this punch landed solidly, with Lu Yun’s current power, even a bull could have its bones broken and tendons snapped, let alone a living person.

When this move came out, Qin Zhonghai was also stunned. Originally when Lu Yun attacked with a hand blade, no matter how he attacked or defended, his acupoints would certainly be controlled. Qin Zhonghai had thought victory was decided, not expecting Lu Yun to have such a strange move.

Qin Zhonghai shouted loudly, flipped his wrist, changing from crane’s beak to tiger’s claw. In an instant his arm suddenly extended, also striking toward Lu Yun’s face. This move struck later but arrived first – before Lu Yun’s fist could touch his face, it could severely injure Lu Yun. It was extremely formidable.

After exchanging several moves, Lu Yun’s heart was filled with amazement. Among all the people he had fought in his life, Kunlun Sect Master Zhuo Lingzhao naturally had the highest martial arts – he had nearly lost his life under Zhuo’s hands. This Qin Zhonghai was only a few years older than himself, yet his variety and speed of moves was no less than Zhuo Lingzhao’s – truly fearsome and terrifying.

At this time Lu Yun was full of doubts and repeatedly encountered danger. His mind suddenly became clear, knowing that if he competed in techniques, he definitely couldn’t gain advantage. Better to rely on internal power for the real test. He took a deep breath, turned his palm inward, channeled his full true power, and pushed heavily toward Qin Zhonghai with a whoosh. Even if his face got scratched, he absolutely wouldn’t let Qin Zhonghai gain the upper hand – he used a desperate technique of mutual destruction.

Seeing him fight so desperately, Qin Zhonghai didn’t dare be careless. He placed his palm across his chest, using stillness to counter movement, forcibly receiving Lu Yun’s earth-splitting, stone-cracking powerful internal force. In that instant their palm power met with a loud bang.

Lu Yun felt Qin Zhonghai’s internal power was extremely fierce and strong, waves upon waves rushing toward his palm, layer upon layer without end. At this time Lu Yun had been practicing internal power for over two years. Thanks to the great power of the “Wujue Heart Method,” his internal power was no weaker than first-rate martial artists in the jianghu. Though under Qin Zhonghai’s fierce attack he struggled to endure, he wasn’t necessarily at a disadvantage.

After about the time it takes to burn a stick of incense, Qin Zhonghai looked up to the sky and laughed loudly, withdrawing his palm power: “Good! I never expected your internal power to be so deep. Admirable! Admirable!”

Lu Yun saw Qin Zhonghai speak this way and felt surprised. Just as he was about to reply, he saw Qin Zhonghai suddenly leave the table, bow to Lu Yun and cup his hands: “I have always acted rashly and startled you. Please forgive me.”

Lu Yun saw his change from arrogance to humility and didn’t know his true intentions. Feeling strange, Qin Zhonghai had already sat down, raised his wine cup and drained it, laughing: “I originally thought you were just a scholar. I never imagined your martial arts were so formidable. Admirable! Admirable!”

In his confusion, Lu Yun only made two sounds and said nothing else.

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “When I just returned to Beijing, that whole group of idiots at the general’s mansion surrounded me and cursed you thoroughly in front of me. These people said how arrogant you were, how ignorant, and so on – their words were truly harsh!”

Lu Yun heard him describe Liu Angtian’s subordinates as idiots, seemingly intentionally defending him. He couldn’t help being stunned and hurriedly said: “What does General Qin mean by this?”

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “What the hell do I mean? When I heard those bastards at the general’s mansion curse you bloody and repeat what you said, I originally didn’t care much. Who knew the more I listened, the more shocked I became – my whole body went cold. I never imagined there could be such penetrating insights in this world! This fellow called Lu Yun, without even visiting the battlefield, could see through military secrets to this extent just from a stinking map – truly a once-in-a-generation genius! Damn it, let’s drink another cup!” He gave a thumbs up and poured wine for Lu Yun again.

Lu Yun heard his praise and was stunned for a long moment, then sighed and said dejectedly: “Lu has always been quick-tongued and has always offended more people than pleased them. Why does General Qin need to make excuses for me?”

Qin Zhonghai spat: “Master Lu, no need to be overly modest – that would seem false! Since ancient times, how could famous scholars and heroes coexist with common people? Right is right, wrong is wrong – why curry favor with anyone?” He raised his wine cup: “I originally thought that with the world peaceful for many years, no one could understand military strategy anymore. Who knew that in humble alleys there would be a sleeping dragon! Come, Qin Zhonghai toasts you!” He raised his cup and drained it in one gulp.

Lu Yun heard him compare him to a “sleeping dragon” and couldn’t help but feel stirred. Sleeping dragon! That was the highest realm in how many scholars’ hearts? Help Chu and Chu wins, help Han and Chu perishes – is there anything more satisfying in the world? For a moment he stared blankly.

Qin Zhonghai picked up a piece of beef and chewed it loudly: “When I heard that group of bastards curse you, I was overjoyed, thinking such a genius must be met. After inquiring all night, I rushed to Wu Dingyuan’s place, but his steward said you couldn’t be found and had probably left the capital. I thought this opportunity must not be missed, so I asked about your appearance and clothing and hurried to search throughout the capital. Fortunately I met you here! It seems my luck isn’t bad – not bad at all!” He laughed heartily again and drank another cup, looking quite carefree.

Lu Yun heard his sincere words and such high regard for himself. Though he wasn’t familiar with this person, his heart was still very moved.

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “What can these wine bags and rice sacks at the general’s mansion do besides bragging and flattering? They’re all blind as dogs! Master Lu, you’re accomplished in both civil and military arts, a once-in-a-generation genius, truly extraordinary. Come, let me toast you again.”

Lu Yun cupped his hands modestly and said hurriedly: “General Qin overpraises me.” This time he finally raised his cup and both men drained their drinks.

After drinking this cup, Qin Zhonghai looked worried and sighed: “Sigh! This Wu Dingyuan is truly blessed to have such a hero accompanying him. I, Qin, have fought in wars for many years but still don’t have a decent helper. Master Lu, what position do you currently hold? Are you a staff officer in the Imperial Guard Tiger Escort Battalion? Or in the Ministry of War’s Carriage Department?”

Lu Yun heard him mention all high-ranking official positions. His own was just a tiny sesame-seed post that couldn’t even be called an “official.” He couldn’t help but smile bitterly: “Thanks to Supervisor Wu’s promotion, I currently serve as a cavalry archer by his side.” A cavalry archer was just a common soldier in the cavalry, without even proper military rank, earning a common soldier’s pay.

Qin Zhonghai was stunned for a long moment, slowly building anger in his eyes. Suddenly he heavily slammed the table, shaking the wooden table into four or five pieces with bowls and plates falling to the ground. The waiter had already been worried and frightened when he saw them fighting earlier, and seeing Qin Zhonghai like this now, he was even more scared and cowered to one side. Lu Yun, seeing his inexplicable anger and not knowing what he had said wrong, was also shocked and quickly retreated, fearing he would suddenly attack again.

Qin Zhonghai raged: “Damn it! Wu Dingyuan wants you to be a cavalry archer? Why not have Zhuge Wuhou sweep the streets? Or why not have Zhang Zifang carry night soil!” For a moment he cursed repeatedly like a fierce tiger roaring.

Wuhou referred to Zhuge Kongming of the Three Kingdoms period, while Zhang Zifang was Zhang Liang, one of the three heroes of early Han who assisted Emperor Gaozu. Lu Yun heard the meaning in his words was such high praise, clearly feeling indignant on his behalf. But this person’s behavior was beyond expectations – he really didn’t know how to handle it. Lu Yun opened his mouth wide, not knowing how to persuade him.

Suddenly he saw Qin Zhonghai drop his shoulders and bend his waist. With a swish, he drew his blade from its sheath. The blade actually carried a fiery red glow, especially dazzling in the dark night. Qin Zhonghai said: “With my ‘Fire Greedy Single Blade’ here, I cannot bear to see a tiger fall to the plains! Brother Lu, your future prospects rest with me, Qin.”

Lu Yun was stunned for a long moment: “General Qin need not do this. I’m leaving Beijing anyway – please don’t trouble yourself over this nobody.”

Qin Zhonghai sheathed his blade and asked strangely: “You’re leaving the capital? Why is that?” Lu Yun sighed with a helpless expression, straightening the wooden table while picking up bowls and plates from the ground. The shopkeeper quickly came over to replace their bowls and chopsticks.

Qin Zhonghai saw Lu Yun was full of troubles and knew he couldn’t get it out of him immediately, so he said: “Master Lu, even if you want to leave, you’re not in a hurry. Come with me – I’ll show you some interesting things. It won’t be too late for Master Lu to leave then.” He turned and walked out, signaling Lu Yun to follow.

Seeing Lu Yun still sitting and hesitating to move, seemingly undecided, he called out loudly: “Master Lu, you’re both intelligent and brave – what is there to fear? Would I, Qin, harm you?”

Lu Yun saw this person was strange throughout but didn’t seem to mean him harm. He pondered a moment and thought: “Looking at this person’s manner, he should be a bold and decisive character, different from those snobbish people at the general’s mansion. Associating with such a person wouldn’t be in vain.” Thinking of his experiences over the past years, he had never had a true close friend. Though he had shared hardships with Wu Dingyuan, their later circumstances differed too greatly and they had grown apart. This Qin Zhonghai seemed heroic and straightforward, definitely not a petty and shameless person. Considering what status he held, yet still came visiting at night – why refuse him?

He stood up abruptly: “Since the general favors me with such regard, how dare I refuse?”

Lu Yun then followed Qin Zhonghai out. The two walked one behind the other slowly down the street.

After walking a short distance, someone from the roadside ran toward them, dressed in military uniform. He bowed to Qin Zhonghai and then led over two tall, strong horses. Qin Zhonghai said: “Master Lu, please mount!” Lu Yun didn’t suspect anything and lightly leaped onto the horse. Qin Zhonghai pulled the reins and spurred his horse forward. Lu Yun followed closely behind.

The two riders galloped to the city gate. The guard officer saw Qin Zhonghai and immediately ran up happily: “General Qin is here! Are you looking for me to drink?” Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “I’ll find you for fun in a couple days. First open the city gate!” He took out his military token for the officer to verify, and the two rode out of the city.

Qin Zhonghai rode all the way to the suburbs. In the deep night, moonlight reflected on the road with a particular desolate beauty. Lu Yun looked back at Beijing, sometimes thinking of Miss Gu, sometimes thinking of Wu Dingyuan, his heart filled with mixed emotions.

After riding a short time, he saw Qin Zhonghai heading toward a desolate mountain hill. Under the silver-white moonlight, the mountain path showed only wild mist, with remaining snow still accumulated on the ground. Lu Yun felt suspicious, not knowing why Qin Zhonghai would lead him to this uninhabited place. Could he mean harm? But thinking again, he reasoned: “This person seems magnanimous and unrestrained, definitely not a despicable and shameless villain. If he really wanted to harm me, he could have broken with me at the tavern – why go to such trouble to lead me to this desolate mountain before acting?” Thinking this, his heart became much more at ease.

Reaching the peak, Qin Zhonghai suddenly dismounted. Lu Yun quickly reined in his horse and also jumped down, seeing this place was desolate and quiet with nothing particularly special about it.

Qin Zhonghai seemed to know Lu Yun’s thoughts and said: “I thought this place was spacious and peaceful, a good spot for talking and conversation – no other intention. Brother Lu, sit anywhere you like!” He lay down looking up at the sky.

Lu Yun said nothing, just dismounted and sat on the ground.

Qin Zhonghai said: “Tonight the moonlight is bright – look, Beijing city is clearly spread out below your feet!” Lu Yun looked down from the hill and saw moonlight illuminating Beijing city – towers, houses, city walls, and tile roofs all before his eyes. Lu Yun wanted to make out the Gu family mansion but couldn’t see clearly for the moment.

Not knowing Lu Yun was thinking of his beloved, Qin Zhonghai thought he wanted to see the emperor and smiled: “Does Master Lu want to see the Forbidden City? Look, it’s right there!” He pointed to a place. Lu Yun craned his neck to look and saw large and small palaces layered upon each other, truly magnificent. This capital had been built and rebuilt through several dynasties, its scale so grand that no other famous city in the world could compare.

Qin Zhonghai looked up to the sky and laughed loudly: “Master Lu, no matter how great the emperor is, at this moment he’s sleeping under our feet! Ha ha! Ha ha! Damn it!”

Lu Yun was stunned with shock. Though his temperament was passionate and he had often met with adversity, he had never spoken such treasonous and wild words. For a moment he stared blankly at Qin Zhonghai.

Qin Zhonghai looked up and recited: “In youth I once studied classics and history, grown up I also have strategies and schemes. Just like a fierce tiger lying in desolate hills, hiding claws and fangs in patience.”

Lu Yun knew these lines came from “Xunyang Tower Record,” which had been extremely popular in the past, but thirty years ago the court had banned it for some reason, so few people dared mention it anymore. These lines meant: “When I was young I read many classics and histories, when I grew up I experienced much training, like a tiger crouched in the wilderness, sharpening its claws and waiting for the day to strike.”

Qin Zhonghai continued reciting: “Who knew I’d be tattooed on both cheeks, how could I bear being assigned to Jiangzhou? If one day I can avenge my wrongs, I’ll dye Xunyang river red with blood!”

The meaning of these lines wasn’t hard to understand: “Who knew I’d become a criminal exiled to Jiangzhou as a prisoner with tattoos on my face? If one day I can clear my grievances, I’ll definitely dye that Xunyang river red with my enemies’ blood!”

Lu Yun thought about these lines. These past years he had endured much mockery and rejection from the world. With all his literary and martial talents, he was forced to sell noodles for a living and wander the jianghu. He couldn’t help but give a clear whistle.

Qin Zhonghai said: “A great man should wield a three-foot green blade, fighting bloody battles north and south, dominating the world – only then would this life not be wasted! What do you say, Master Lu?” Lu Yun thought of how he had been falsely accused and inexplicably became a fugitive, cutting off his path to advancement in life, and couldn’t help but sigh.

Qin Zhonghai reached over and grasped Lu Yun’s hands, declaring loudly: “Master Lu, though you and I have never met before, why did I seek you out?”

Before Lu Yun could answer, Qin Zhonghai asked and answered himself: “First, because I can’t stand the world’s coldness and most hate heroes who don’t get their due. Hearing of your circumstances, I felt deep sympathy and thus came to invite you. Second, though I’ve fought wars for many years and have fierce generals under me, I lack a strategist who can plan from behind the scenes. Yesterday when I heard about you, I came searching through the night. Brother Lu, I’ll speak frankly – are you willing to serve under my command?”

In the moonlight, Qin Zhonghai’s sincerity was evident. Lu Yun was moved, knowing Qin Zhonghai truly valued him. But it wasn’t that no one had appreciated him before – hadn’t Minister Gu been the same? Lu Yun’s heart stirred as he looked up at the starry sky and thought: “From beginning to end I couldn’t forget fame and glory, yet through misunderstandings I became a criminal, leading to today where I have no country to serve, no home to return to, wasting all my aspirations. Should I… should I really sell noodles for the rest of my life? But I… I’m guilty of crimes – how can I agree to this?” He bit his teeth and remained silent for a long time.

Seeing his silence, Qin Zhonghai couldn’t help saying: “Brother Lu, why won’t you agree? Do you look down on me, Qin?”

Lu Yun sighed lightly: “I’m sorry for General Qin’s good intentions, but I cannot agree.”

Qin Zhonghai made a sound and said loudly: “Do you plan to live like this for the rest of your life? To be an insignificant noodle vendor forever?”

Lu Yun’s body trembled as words he had once spoken in the Shandong prison suddenly echoed in his ears.

That day when the jailers tortured him in every way, trying to make him bow his head and confess, but he refused to submit and spoke the aspiration in his heart. In that moment of life and death crisis and suffering, he cried out to heaven: “I want to establish a heart for heaven and earth, establish a destiny for the people!”

In that moment of crisis, he clearly understood one thing.

The reason he could endure suffering and bear what others could not bear was because he sought a sage’s heart.

Lu Yun was born humble, his parents both died in poverty and illness. A tenant farmer’s son, relying on doing rough work in a temple, he survived. More than ten years of cold window hardship, all for vindicating himself and vindicating the world. Such a person was now a fugitive with no future.

Lu Yun’s eyes blurred with tears as he suddenly lowered his head and sighed: “General Qin, I won’t hide it from you. Three years ago Lu Yun failed the imperial examinations and wandered the jianghu. Now I have a case against me and am a person awaiting punishment.” He wiped away his tears and looked at Beijing at his feet, continuing: “It’s not that Lu Yun doesn’t understand or appreciate the general’s good intentions, but consider – I’m a desperate fugitive with crimes on my head. How can you ask me to take on responsibilities?” He then told everything about how he was falsely accused, forced to escape prison, and wandered north and south, only omitting the section about the Gu family in Yangzhou to avoid implicating Gu Siyuan.

Lu Yun had been feeling very depressed these past days. Since leaving Yangzhou, whether with those close to him like Gu Siyuan or those who shared hardships like Wu Dingyuan, he had always kept his background secret. Who knew that now he would tell a court official he had never met before? Even he found this strange.

After hearing this, Qin Zhonghai suddenly looked up to the sky and laughed loudly. Lu Yun had never revealed his background to anyone, and now being mocked, he couldn’t help becoming furious and shouted: “General Qin! I told you my secrets and you laugh like this – what do you mean?”

Qin Zhonghai restrained his expression and said solemnly: “Brother Lu, calm your anger. I was only laughing at how naive you are. In my army, eight or ten out of ten are criminals who committed heinous crimes, murderers and arsonists – I’ve taken them all in. Are you afraid of this small matter?”

Lu Yun was stunned upon hearing this and said strangely: “Such things exist? General Qin leads imperial troops and guards!”

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “Called imperial troops and named guards, but aren’t they all just knife-carrying laborers selling their lives? They say good men don’t become soldiers – who would abandon a good livelihood to sleep rough in the army with a worthless life and no glimpse of wealth? If not for violating laws and having no home to return to, who would risk such mortal danger? To be honest: even begging on the streets is better than being exiled to the frontier.”

Lu Yun shook his head: “Frontier hardships and battlefield death are small matters to me. But with crimes on my record, even if I join the military, I probably couldn’t advance and would remain nameless until death, suffering countless slights. Better to return to jianghu life and at least be free.”

Qin Zhonghai stretched out his huge hand and heavily patted Lu Yun’s shoulder, shouting: “Brother Lu, what defeatist talk is this? In the future when we accomplish great deeds, destroy the Xiongnu in the north and break the Qiang and Rong in the west, at that time forget your small transgression – even if you had truly killed and escaped prison, wouldn’t the emperor pardon such a small crime? By then not only would you regain your clear name, you might be enfeoffed as a marquis and enjoy lifelong wealth and honor!”

Lu Yun had originally been disheartened, but hearing Qin Zhonghai’s awakening words, his heart shook as he thought: “Yes! How did I not think of this? If I could perform great service for the court and receive imperial pardon to restore my good name, why worry about not being able to take the imperial examinations again in the future?”

Lu Yun looked up and saw Qin Zhonghai’s eyes full of encouragement. His heart filled with gratitude, he said in a trembling voice: “I don’t care about official rank or noble titles – I only want to see the light of day again and restore my good name. I will never forget your kindness today.” His emotions stirred and tears flowed down.

Qin Zhonghai, seeing his expression, was greatly pleased. He gripped Lu Yun’s hands tightly and laughed loudly: “Brother Lu, as long as you’re willing to draw your blade and help, with your strategy and martial arts, how could you not become famous among the ministers?”

Lu Yun wept as he whistled long and loud toward the sky, as if to throw all his grievances straight up three thousand zhang to the blue heavens. Qin Zhonghai was overjoyed and also laughed wildly without restraint. Both men had deep internal power, and at this moment their whistling shook the heavens. There had originally been birds and beasts resting on the hill, but they were all awakened by the two men’s whistling, startling crows into mournful cries and small animals into frantic flight.

Now let’s speak of Wu Dingyuan. This day when he had just returned to his mansion, the steward hurriedly came to report: “Master, that Lu fellow somehow left alone last night.” Wu Dingyuan was shocked and urgently asked: “This… how did this come about? I haven’t had time to check on him these past days – how did this happen?”

The steward advised: “Master, this Lu fellow only had some small favor with you, yet he ate and drank for free at the mansion without doing any real work. When such a person leaves, he leaves – why should you worry?”

Wu Dingyuan was furious upon hearing this and shouted: “Nonsense! This man is my sworn brother who shared sweet and bitter times with me through hardships. I can have today entirely because he risked his life for mine! Now that he left without saying goodbye, he must feel I’ve wronged him. How can I not feel guilty?” Seeing Wu Dingyuan lose such a temper, the steward could only mumble agreement and leave.

Wu Dingyuan hurriedly rushed out the door to search for Lu Yun’s whereabouts. He went to several taverns that Lu Yun usually frequented, but couldn’t find him anywhere. After a whole day’s effort, he came up empty-handed. He sighed and entered a nearby inn, ordering a pot of old wine to drink alone.

After Wu Dingyuan drank two cups, he thought: “I’ve been preoccupied with official business these past days and neglected this brother of mine. Lu and I have a life-and-death friendship, yet he left without saying goodbye. Sigh, how can I explain this…”

He took another sip of wine and thought: “Ever since Master Huang the coroner was killed, I’ve had no relatives in this world. Finally I had such a sworn brother, yet he left me like this. From now on, I’m alone again. In this vast capital with no family or friends, how will I pass the lonely years?” In his helplessness, thinking of his situation with no relatives, he gulped down bitter wine, his eyes becoming moist.

Wu Dingyuan had been orphaned since childhood and survived by doing odd jobs at the Liangzhou yamen. He should have lived an ordinary life, but at sixteen he encountered a strange fate. He accidentally helped a fallen knight-errant who, to escape his enemies, actually stayed long-term in Xiliang. In gratitude, he taught Wu Dingyuan martial arts. When Wu Dingyuan was twenty-five, that man also died of illness in Xiliang city. Before dying, he instructed Wu Dingyuan to become an upright constable and uphold justice in the world. In his grief and remembering his teacher’s kindness, Wu Dingyuan vowed to become a public official.

At twenty-eight, Wu Dingyuan became head constable of Xiliang Prefecture. By thirty-four, he had awed both the underworld and legitimate circles, solving countless major cases. But he was upright as an official – though not to the point of being inflexible, he was far more strict than those corrupt officials. As a result, he had few friends and no confidants. His subordinates were mostly fawning flatterers. That day outside the Ma Wang Temple in Xiliang, he had already experienced the world’s coldness and warmth. Compared to that, Lu Yun, who helped strangers in need, was precious indeed.

He took a sip of wine and thought of Lu Yun’s many good qualities, suddenly thinking: “My brother Lu rarely smiled and was always frowning, seeming not to care about anything. He must have had some past sorrows. Sigh… Lu has too strong a temperament and never reveals his background. Every time I ask him, he’s always evasive. Could he have some unspeakable secret? But why won’t he tell me, his sworn brother?”

He downed a cup of wine and shook his head repeatedly, thinking: “When we first met, he was still a person of backbone. How did he later become a lazy drunk? Looking back, it seems he became like this after that birthday celebration. What exactly happened that day? Could someone at Minister Gu’s mansion have bullied him? Or what else?” Being a constable by training, though rough in appearance, he was extremely meticulous in all matters and began thinking carefully.

Suddenly someone nearby spoke: “Innkeeper! A table!”

Wu Dingyuan was startled and glanced sideways to see about ten people dressed as Jinyiwei entering. His heart leaped as he thought: “These demons have come out again! But I’m now a court official – they probably won’t dare do anything to me!” Though he said this, he still didn’t want to face these people and immediately turned away and lowered his head.

He heard one of the Jinyiwei saying: “Commander An, this time Lord Jiang has assigned several major tasks. None seem easy to handle. Do you have any strategies?” He saw a man with a face like red dates and a precious blade at his waist – it was An’dao Jing. He sighed heavily and gulped down old wine. Someone said: “Old Yun! Say a few words less to spare everyone’s worries.”

Wu Dingyuan stole glances and saw about ten school captains had entered the shop, but only three sat with An’dao Jing. He recognized them all as skilled fighters in the Jinyiwei. One was tall and big with a frightening large face, called “Thunder God Boom” – Shan Guoyi. Another was slick-haired with a pockmarked face, called “Nine-Tailed Dragon” – Yun Sanlang. Wu Dingyuan had mixed with Beijing figures these past months and was quite familiar with faces, so he recognized these two.

He looked again and saw the remaining person had dignified bearing and extraordinary presence. Wu Dingyuan couldn’t help making a sound of surprise, thinking: “How did this person also join the Jinyiwei?” This person had quite a background and had met Wu Dingyuan several times. He was the spear and staff instructor the Ministry of Justice had hired for a high price, known as “Snake and Crane Double Movement” – Hao Zhenxiang. This man used to teach martial arts to various provinces and had even traveled to Gansu to instruct Wu Dingyuan’s martial arts. But this person had an upright character – why was he mixed up with Jinyiwei people? Wu Dingyuan felt quite strange, but seeing An’dao Jing sitting right there, how could he acknowledge him? He sat quietly without moving.

Wu Dingyuan pretended to drink while hearing Yun Sanlang say: “It’s really disgusting – originally that bastard Wu Dingyuan was about to be captured by us, but halfway that Yang fellow intercepted him. Damn, he’s not a good thing!” Wu Dingyuan heard them mention himself and felt slightly shocked, thinking: “After all this time, these people still can’t forget that sheepskin. It seems I need to be more careful in daily life to avoid falling into their trap.”

“Thunder God Boom” Shan Guoyi continued: “Yes! Who’d have thought Yang Langzhong would dare act in front of us? Looking at him as a young scholar, he actually has such courage.” Yun Sanlang smiled: “Damn, just one Yang Suguan – if not for his father Yang Yuan’s sake, we could kill ten of him! Commander, don’t you think so?” An’dao Jing looked displeased and only drank with his head down, not responding.

“Snake and Crane Double Movement” Hao Zhenxiang had been silent with his head down, but suddenly said: “What you two just said is greatly mistaken.” Yun Sanlang’s face showed displeasure and he snorted: “How do you mean, Instructor Hao?”

Though Hao Zhenxiang was about forty, he hadn’t been under An’dao Jing’s command for long. But his martial arts were high and he handled affairs thoroughly. These past months he had accumulated merits and advanced faster than anyone. Originally just a provincial school captain, he was now An’dao Jing’s capable assistant. Yun Sanlang and others, seeing this with jealousy and hatred, had long been dissatisfied with him. Now hearing him speak rudely with no respect for his seniors, they couldn’t help wanting to cause trouble.

Hao Zhenxiang said: “This Yang Langzhong possesses exceptional skills and must not be underestimated. If you two are contemptuous, you’ll probably suffer greatly in the future.” Yun Sanlang sneered: “Listen to you praise him to the skies! What abilities does this Yang Suguan have? Tell me about them.”

Hao Zhenxiang said: “This Yang Langzhong’s master is none other than Tianjue Monk, seat of Shaolin Temple’s Bodhidharma Academy. You’ve probably heard his great name – he’s recognized in jianghu as Shaolin’s number one expert. Yang Langzhong is his final disciple. You can imagine his martial arts.”

Yun Sanlang laughed coldly: “What Tianjue Monk, Dijue Monk – this old monk hasn’t traveled jianghu for ages. He’s just a useless person. Besides this old thing, Shaolin Temple probably can’t produce any other experts to scare people!” Hao Zhenxiang shook his head: “Haven’t you all heard ‘Three treasures in Bodhidharma Academy, Four Vajras before Luohan Hall’? Shaolin Temple’s Four Great Vajras each have exceptional martial arts. All four could establish sects and become famous in jianghu. What about the temple’s number one expert Tianjue Monk? Commander Yun should be more careful with his words.”

Yun Sanlang was furious and about to explode when Shan Guoyi laughed: “Hey! Tell us, if I competed with the Four Great Vajras, how would the outcome be?” Hao Zhenxiang said expressionlessly: “If comparing true martial arts, ordinary sect leaders are far inferior to the Four Great Vajras, let alone Brother Shan. Honestly, even if several of you joined forces, you might not fare well.”

Wu Dingyuan heard this spear and staff instructor speak eloquently with considerable bearing, not ashamed to praise enemies – he could be called an extremely capable general. He thought: “I heard Jinyiwei has declined in recent years, using third-rate jianghu figures like this Yun Sanlang. I don’t know how An’dao Jing became enlightened to actually know to employ experts like Hao Zhenxiang – very strange indeed. But this Instructor Hao has an upright character and easily offends people. His words have already offended these people.”

Indeed, Yun Sanlang’s eyes rolled strangely as anger surged, raging: “Good fellow! You say several of us together couldn’t beat Shaolin monks? What about you then? Can Instructor Hao’s methods match the Four Great Vajras?”

Hao Zhenxiang said expressionlessly: “With my ‘Snake and Crane Double Movement,’ I can match Shaolin Lingzhen’s ‘Mighty Vajra Finger.'”

Yun Sanlang was furious. He and Shan Guoyi exchanged glances, both standing up: “Since Instructor Hao is so fierce, we two have decided to join hands and ask you for some instruction.”

Hao Zhenxiang glanced at An’dao Jing to see his instructions. Yun Sanlang saw his intention and sneered: “Listen well, surnamed Hao – if you have goods and materials, why not settle it now? Why look for backing? If you have guts, come out for single combat. Life and death by fate, willing to bet and accept loss. If you get beaten to death, that’s your ancestors’ lack of virtue. How about it?”

Hao Zhenxiang’s expression was stern as he pointed toward the door: “In that case, let’s all talk outside.” He was about to stand up.

Wu Dingyuan thought with secret amusement: “The Jinyiwei are all wine bags and rice sacks – how can they tolerate someone like Hao Zhenxiang? Let’s see how An’dao Jing mediates this dispute and stops the conflict.”

Just as the Jinyiwei crowd was about to fight among themselves, An’dao Jing quickly reached out to stop Hao Zhenxiang, saying gently: “Instructor Hao, please sit.” Then he shouted at Yun Sanlang: “You two sit down! What abilities Instructor Hao has, you’ll see in a few days. What’s the rush?”

Yun Sanlang was unconvinced and said loudly: “Commander! If you protect this boy like this, how can you make the brothers submit? He came late but advanced faster than anyone. He usually speaks arrogantly. If we can’t teach him a lesson, this Hao fellow might not even know who he is!”

Yun Sanlang usually cared most about face. Seeing Hao Zhenxiang speak without giving him respect, his anger burned and he actually aired their internal conflicts in a Beijing inn.

An’dao Jing saw everyone’s dissatisfied expressions and smiled: “What’s wrong, brothers being so petty? Instructor Hao was promoted by me personally. What dissatisfaction do you have?”

Yun Sanlang snorted: “Commander, you’re right about everything except this bastard. What qualifies him to be an instructor? When we wanted to spar with him, he acted like a shrinking turtle.”

Hao Zhenxiang suddenly heard this and his eyes flashed, brilliant light shooting from them. “Thunder God Boom” Shan Guoyi saw his expression and broke into a cold sweat, but Yun Sanlang remained oblivious and continued his loud criticisms.

An’dao Jing had been extremely vexed these past days. Because of the tasks Jiang Chong had assigned, he was already overwhelmed and deeply feared any mistakes. That’s why he sought out tough hands like Hao Zhenxiang, hoping he could work miracles and handle several major matters properly. When Yang Suguan submitted a memorial before the emperor criticizing his wrongdoings, saying how he acted recklessly in Prince’s Alley and harassed princes and ministers, it made him even more worried and annoyed. Thinking of recent continuous difficulties and his subordinates still making such scenes, his anger reached its peak. He couldn’t help shouting: “Damn it!”

Everyone heard his angry shout and was startled, all quieting down.

An’dao Jing gulped down a bowl of strong liquor and shouted: “What abilities does Instructor Hao have? Are you two qualified to experience them? That day when Wu Dingyuan escaped, Kunlun Mountain blamed us harshly and we got into conflicts, even fighting in front of Lord Jiang. In the end, they only sent out two people and defeated our eighteen instructors, making Lord Jiang shake his head repeatedly! Where were you two animals then?”

Yun Sanlang coughed as if to speak, but An’dao Jing forcefully waved his hand to suppress his words. Then he stood up and pointed at Yun Sanlang’s nose, cursing fiercely: “You little bastard, get this straight – if Instructor Hao hadn’t happened to be there that day to resist, who among you could have blocked ‘Sword Gu’ Tu Lingxin? Doesn’t such ability deserve promotion to Chief Spear and Staff Instructor? You two are both bastards and confused – reflect on yourselves properly!”

Wu Dingyuan had also heard of this matter – how Kunlun Mountain defeated Jinyiwei, seriously injuring over ten experts in front of Jiang Chong, making Jinyiwei a laughingstock in the capital. Originally Jinyiwei faced complete defeat, but if not for a school captain suddenly jumping out to battle “Sword Gu” Tu Lingxin for hundreds of exchanges, An’dao Jing would have been dismissed and investigated long ago. How could he be sitting here giving orders? But Wu Dingyuan never imagined that school captain was the former Ministry of Justice spear and staff instructor known as “Snake and Crane Double Movement” – Hao Zhenxiang.

Yun Sanlang said: “I wasn’t in the capital then. If I had been there! Hmph, I’d have captured even Zhuo Lingzhao!” An’dao Jing was furious and heavily slammed the table, cursing: “Bullshit! Bullshit! Just a bragging bastard!” Yun Sanlang was shocked and lowered his head in silence.

Hao Zhenxiang said quietly: “Commander, calm your anger. There are many ears here – it’s inappropriate to discuss official business.”

An’dao Jing sighed and drank another large bowl of strong liquor. Yun Sanlang and others, having been scolded, lost face but remained unconvinced, still grinding their teeth and glaring at Hao Zhenxiang with unspeakable hatred.

An’dao Jing was vexed and troubled. Seeing his subordinates at odds and his future uncertain, he could only drown his sorrows in wine, draining over ten bowls of strong liquor but still feeling unsatisfied.

After the group finished eating and drinking, they prepared to leave. Yun Sanlang called the innkeeper and shouted: “Put this meal on the Zhili yamen’s account. Whenever you go to collect, grandfather will give you convenience!” The innkeeper smiled apologetically: “Yes! Yes! For you gentlemen to honor our small shop is already this humble one’s great fortune for three lifetimes. How dare we ask you gentlemen for money?”

Hao Zhenxiang watched coldly and couldn’t help snorting: “Petty thieves behave just like this!” Yun Sanlang glared angrily: “What’s wrong? Don’t like it? Fuck your grandmother!”

Hao Zhenxiang sneered: “If we lack money to spend, we should just go to wealthy households and take it. Rich old masters have plenty of money. How can we ruin these poor people’s business? Consider that Commander An is a sixth-rank court official and former military examination runner-up. How can he eat free meals everywhere and do such petty things? Our Jinyiwei’s reputation is all ruined by people like you!”

Yun Sanlang wanted to attack but didn’t dare, only getting so angry his beard bristled and eyes bulged. Hao Zhenxiang took out his money pouch and called the innkeeper to settle the bill, but how could the innkeeper dare accept? He just kept trembling.

An’dao Jing walked over and took out a gold ingot, heavily slamming it on the table with a loud shout: “Instructor Hao is absolutely right! If we want to spend money, we should go demand it from wealthy county officials. How can we eat free meals from these common people? From now on, you people must change these bad customs and habits!”

Wu Dingyuan looked intently and saw that with An’dao Jing’s casual palm strike, the gold ingot was firmly embedded in the sandalwood table. This hand strength was indeed astonishing, worthy of the Jinyiwei commander title. The innkeeper beside them was both shocked and delighted, his body shaking as his eyes stared straight at the gold ingot on the table as if drool was about to flow.

When Wu Dingyuan saw the Jinyiwei crowd had gone far, he finally left the shop. Just as he exited, he heard someone behind him call: “Constable Wu! Please wait!”

Since coming to the capital, everyone called him Supervisor Wu or Lord Wu. No one had called him Constable Wu anymore. Hearing this felt intimate, like meeting an old friend in a foreign land. Wu Dingyuan turned around and saw a man with arms crossed standing at the door.

Wu Dingyuan looked carefully and saw it was “Snake and Crane Double Movement” Hao Zhenxiang whom he had just seen in the shop. He was greatly shocked and quickly became alert, though his face showed nothing as he smiled: “So it’s Instructor Hao – what a coincidence! We haven’t seen each other for years, have we!”

Hao Zhenxiang chuckled: “What are you saying, Constable Wu? Didn’t we just see each other in the shop? When did you also learn such hypocritical tricks?”

Wu Dingyuan smiled awkwardly. It seemed Hao Zhenxiang’s sharp eyes had already spotted him. Though his heart chilled, his face couldn’t show the slightest fear. He immediately smiled slightly: “Since we’re fated to meet, why not come to my humble residence for a brief visit and casual chat?”

Hao Zhenxiang said lightly: “Rare that Constable Wu is so nostalgic. I won’t be polite then.”

Wu Dingyuan saw his straightforward agreement and felt even more wary. In the past they only knew each other and couldn’t be called close friends. Now that Hao Zhenxiang suddenly sought him out, he didn’t know if it was fortune or misfortune. But he was always steady, so he showed no emotion and led him back to his mansion.

The two entered the house. Hao Zhenxiang sat down without ceremony. Wu Dingyuan ordered tea to be served and also sat beside him, secretly on guard.

After a long time, Hao Zhenxiang still didn’t speak, just sat upright to one side. Wu Dingyuan thought: “Looking at his manner, maybe he really came to reminisce. I shouldn’t be too petty.” He coughed and found a topic: “I wonder when Instructor Hao joined the Jinyiwei? Wasn’t the instructor serving in Shandong originally?”

Hao Zhenxiang sipped tea and suddenly sighed: “It’s all fate’s trickery – beyond human control.”

Wu Dingyuan heard his intention to reminisce and felt slightly relieved, asking: “How so? Did Instructor Hao offend someone?” Hearing Hao Zhenxiang’s words, it seemed he had nowhere to turn and was reluctantly serving under the Jinyiwei. But this person usually acted steadily – logically such things shouldn’t happen. Wu Dingyuan couldn’t help feeling secretly strange.

He heard Hao Zhenxiang sigh deeply: “I won’t hide it from Constable Wu. Two years ago in Shandong, I saw injustice when a rich young master molested a girl. I intervened on the spot and severely punished that group of boys.” Wu Dingyuan knew Hao Zhenxiang’s abilities and smiled slightly: “Those rascals who provoked Instructor Hao were truly unlucky.”

Hao Zhenxiang smiled bitterly: “Who knows who was unlucky! When I struck out, I beat someone who couldn’t be touched or scolded – that beating I gave was to the son of the Shandong Provincial Commander.”

Wu Dingyuan, long in government service, knew Hao Zhenxiang had provoked major trouble. He smiled miserably and shook his head: “This is terrible. The instructor must have suffered.”

Hao Zhenxiang smiled bitterly: “That commander was so damn… so fierce, demanding my life and wanting my whole family exiled to the army. My entire family was pressured by the yamen with no way out, so we had to flee by night to Henan to rely on relatives. But the world is cold – those relatives refused to take us in, forcing our whole family to wander the streets begging.”

Wu Dingyuan felt pity and shook his head: “The world’s warmth and coldness can only be seen in times of trouble. The saying ‘time reveals a person’s heart’ means exactly this.” Speaking of this, he thought of Lu Yun and couldn’t help sighing deeply.

Hao Zhenxiang continued: “Seeing the whole family hungry and cold, I had practiced martial arts all my life – I couldn’t just watch the family starve to death! So I had no choice but to swallow my pride and perform on the streets for a living.” Wu Dingyuan sighed: “This truly humiliates the instructor.”

Hao Zhenxiang sighed for a moment and continued: “It’s truly a perverse fate. Even fallen to this state, that day over ten rascals came looking for trouble, insisting I owed them money and demanding I give them my daughter in payment. I was furious and killed two of them on the spot, then was arrested and thrown in jail that night. The whole family cried to heaven and earth but couldn’t save me.”

Wu Dingyuan cursed: “Those rascals are truly conscienceless! If I were still a constable, I’d round them all up!”

Hao Zhenxiang smiled bitterly: “Remember, I used to be an instructor for constables myself! A tiger fallen to flatlands is bullied by dogs. In that Henan jail I was beaten badly, tortured severely, not even getting food daily. After five full days, that county magistrate took me out for execution.” Wu Dingyuan heard of his plight and couldn’t help sighing deeply in silence.

Hao Zhenxiang continued: “That day at the execution ground, knowing I would surely die, I simply gave up – laughing and singing all the way. Seeing my whole family standing roadside crying, though my heart ached, since I was going to die anyway, I didn’t want to drag it out. I steeled my heart, wanting this release. At the execution ground there were two supervisors – one was the county magistrate, the other wore Jinyiwei clothing.”

Wu Dingyuan’s heart tensed: “That person was An’dao Jing, right!”

Hao Zhenxiang nodded: “Exactly Commander An. That day I was going to die anyway, so I was too lazy to care who was who. I lay on the ground urging the executioner to be quick and neat. That executioner, annoyed by my nagging, argued with me, boasting about his blade technique and martial arts skills. Hearing this fired up my anger, I cursed: ‘Boy, what do you understand? I’m the ancestor of blade users! The knowledge of beheading is vast – before chopping, feel the cervical vertebrae, remember to strike fast, apply force after penetrating flesh, or the head won’t come off!’ The watching crowd heard me speak this way and all laughed loudly. Commander An clapped and laughed: ‘You’re very interesting! Come! Come! Drink a few cups before dying!’ He poured wine and had someone bring it to me. I was kneeling on the ground when that person tried to feed me, but the wine spilled out. I laughed heartily and said: ‘Don’t waste good wine!’ Then I used internal power to suck from a distance. Though the wine was several feet away, I still sucked it into my mouth. I licked my lips and laughed repeatedly: ‘Good wine! Good wine!'”

Wu Dingyuan also laughed heartily: “In this vast world, probably only Instructor Hao has such courage!”

Hao Zhenxiang laughed dryly: “Constable Wu laughs at me. That Commander An originally sat motionless, but seeing me use this skill, he immediately stood up and rushed into the execution ground shouting: ‘What a hero! What excellent martial arts! Spare his life! Spare his life!'”

Wu Dingyuan, hearing this account, finally understood how Hao Zhenxiang came to join the imperial guards. He laughed dryly: “So Commander An admired your martial arts and felt compassion for talent. Instructor Hao truly has a charmed life!”

Hao Zhenxiang shook his head with a bitter smile: “Isn’t that so? Since that day I’ve followed Commander An. Previously you knew how I viewed these imperial guard types… Sigh! Who knew I’d now become one of them…” Knowing he had said too much, he quickly raised his tea bowl and drained it.

Wu Dingyuan understood clearly that An’dao Jing had saved Hao Zhenxiang’s life. Otherwise, with Hao Zhenxiang’s tough temperament, how could he mix with this pack of wolves? But the two sides were clearly enemies. Though he had some friendship with Hao Zhenxiang, given the rigid circumstances, it probably couldn’t be helped.

Wu Dingyuan sighed lightly, took the teapot and refilled Hao Zhenxiang’s cup, saying mildly: “Instructor Hao, hearing you speak this way, your visit today is purely because of An’dao Jing?”

Hao Zhenxiang nodded lightly: “Constable Wu is correct. I didn’t come today to discuss these trivial matters, but to deliver a message for Commander An.”

Wu Dingyuan knew he was getting to the point and snorted: “Instructor, speak directly without concealment.”

Hao Zhenxiang frowned as if considering how to begin. Wu Dingyuan didn’t hurry him, just frowned and waited for him to speak. After a long while, Hao Zhenxiang said: “I heard that after Constable Wu entered the capital, he has given that item to court officials. Is this true or not?” Wu Dingyuan chuckled: “What if it’s true? What if it’s not?”

Hao Zhenxiang said impassively: “Does Constable Wu know how many people are currently imprisoned at Kunlun Mountain?”

Wu Dingyuan thought of Master Lingyin from Shaolin Temple, Li Tieshan and others who risked their lives to save him, and his heart ached. He said slowly: “I’m fortunate to have survived. Many famous heroes risked fighting Zhuo Lingzhao for my sake. I’m deeply grateful for their kindness to this day.”

Hao Zhenxiang nodded: “Doesn’t Constable Wu care about these people’s safety?”

Wu Dingyuan’s heart leaped as he thought: “From Hao Zhenxiang’s tone, if I don’t hand over the item, Kunlun Mountain will kill people in revenge. Could he be here to deliver such a message?” His mind stirred as he said: “Instructor Hao, if you want to deliver a message, you’ve found the wrong person. The item is no longer in my hands – it has passed to Marquis Liu. If Instructor Hao has something to say, you should seek the Marquis.”

Hao Zhenxiang shook his head: “I’m only following orders to pass a few words to Brother Dingyuan. As for how Brother Dingyuan wishes to handle it, that’s entirely up to you.” Wu Dingyuan sneered: “Fine! Given that we still have some friendship, I’ll listen to you complete your message so you can return and report.” He drew out the words “report” especially long, deliberately mocking Hao Zhenxiang.

Hao Zhenxiang’s expression changed slightly, then he said steadily: “Lord Jiang has ordered that if you remain stubbornly obstinate, though the current situation prevents him from moving against you, once circumstances change, no matter how high an office you achieve or how much wealth you accumulate, he will certainly hire assassins and won’t rest until your entire family is dead.”

These words carried tremendous threatening power. Wu Dingyuan immediately broke into a cold sweat. Currently, if Jiang Chong wanted to kill him, Liu Angtian held evidence and would certainly have ways to retaliate. But if Liu Angtian died or lost power at court, Wu Dingyuan would certainly face great disaster. Thinking that even after establishing a family and career he would still have to live in constant fear, he couldn’t help but change color.

Wu Dingyuan took a deep breath: “Is that all? Nothing else?” Hao Zhenxiang nodded: “That’s all.”

Wu Dingyuan lowered his head in silence, then suddenly sighed.

Hao Zhenxiang said: “If Constable Wu is worried, why not hand over the item for peace of mind?”

Wu Dingyuan suddenly laughed loudly: “Instructor Hao, ah Instructor Hao! If I had coveted wealth and glory, I would have submitted in Xiliang long ago. Why drag it out until now before dying? Go back and tell your master that my head, Wu Dingyuan’s, has long been washed clean and waiting for him – if he has the guts, he can come take it anytime!”

Hao Zhenxiang heard his increasingly rude speech and put on a stern face, saying coldly: “I’ve said what needed saying for old times’ sake. Constable Wu, conduct yourself properly.” He stood up and walked to the door.

Wu Dingyuan looked at his retreating figure and, thinking this person had just had some discord with the Jinyiwei, couldn’t help saying: “Instructor Hao, these days have been hard on you!”

Hao Zhenxiang’s whole body trembled. Without turning back, he said: “What do you mean by that, Constable Wu?”

Wu Dingyuan said: “Everyone says you’re a real man, but now you’re mixed up with pigs and dogs, inevitably getting covered in filth. When I say you’ve been wronged, that’s giving you face.”

Hao Zhenxiang turned around furiously: “Surnamed Wu! I’m just trying to make a living – why must you insult me?”

Wu Dingyuan put on an air of complete indifference: “Why should Instructor Hao be angry? If your conscience is clear, just consider me a madman and let it go.” He smiled faintly: “But if your conscience is guilty, even if you killed me, your conscience would still be guilty.”

Hao Zhenxiang clenched his fists, his bones cracking throughout his body, his eyes full of bloodshot veins. He gritted his teeth: “I am guilty! I should have died on that execution ground that day, let my whole family wander the streets begging, let my wife and daughter rely on brothel money from selling their bodies to support the family. Constable Wu, when have you ever pitied people in my situation?”

Wu Dingyuan saw his state and thought of this iron-hard man having to live like this – his heart was moved.

Hao Zhenxiang spoke louder and louder: “How difficult this world is! You want to stand up for justice, and you end up with a bad death. Who’s unlucky? Who deserves pity? All our own people! Constable Wu, from Shandong all the way to Henan, in that prison I thought it through – from now on I’ll just live honestly and loyally, serve the emperor and country, offer up all my abilities, and think of nothing else!”

Wu Dingyuan shook his head: “Don’t say anymore. Now you’re helping tigers harm others. When you die, your name will stink for ten thousand years – there’s no good ending!”

He saw Hao Zhenxiang glare at him angrily. Wu Dingyuan thought: “With Hao Zhenxiang’s martial arts, if he wanted to hurt me now, it would be easy as turning his hand. But we’ve known each other for some time – surely he won’t be so petty.”

Suddenly Hao Zhenxiang laughed coldly: “Constable Wu, you speak beautifully, repeatedly calling me shameless and despicable. But do you know how badly people talk about you outside?”

Wu Dingyuan’s heart chilled, but his face still showed complete indifference as he smiled: “Really? As long as it’s not the instructor spreading malicious gossip about me, feel free to speak.”

Hao Zhenxiang shook his head: “Originally Brother Dingyuan worked tirelessly for the Yanling Escort Agency’s blood case, risking his official career and becoming a fugitive. Heroes throughout jianghu all respected you. Even I in distant Shandong admired you greatly. When various heroes were all captured by Kunlun Mountain and only you escaped, heroes throughout the world celebrated for you, saying heaven had eyes and preserved a good man’s life. But after a few months, a different story emerged in jianghu – extremely ugly.”

Wu Dingyuan sneered: “What story! Speak clearly!”

Hao Zhenxiang said: “Originally people thought Constable Wu was a righteous hero who, after escaping alone, would surely return to rescue his old sworn brothers. Who knew that after Constable Wu reached the capital, he transformed overnight into the famous Supervisor Wu, but showed no signs of worrying about the good friends who had risked their lives for him that day. He only remembered to live the good life, do his cushy job, buy mansions and hire servants – how imposing! Suddenly he’d flown up to become a phoenix!”

Wu Dingyuan heard him speak this way and was so angry his face turned iron-blue – he couldn’t say a word.

Hao Zhenxiang continued: “Originally the arrest warrants everywhere mysteriously disappeared and were all collected by the yamens. The court even promoted him with honors – how delightful! If there wasn’t trickery involved, how could this happen? Everyone in jianghu says you were bought by treacherous officials and in the end obediently handed over the item in exchange for a tiny official position, joining the corrupt current, despicable and shameless, making jianghu heroes gnash their teeth! Poor Master Lingyin and his disciples from Shaolin Temple, Manor Master Li Tieshan’s whole family – all became stepping stones for someone’s wealth and official position!”

Wu Dingyuan’s face turned deathly pale. He never imagined his reputation had become so bad. His heart felt like it was being cut by knives as he collapsed in despair.

Hao Zhenxiang looked at him coldly: “You’re right – I am a running dog of treacherous court officials, a villain, a beast. But Constable Wu, what about you? Are you so righteous and confident?”

Wu Dingyuan said dejectedly: “That day my life hung by a thread. Fortunately a hero helped me, and after desperately fleeing, at the crucial moment I was rescued by the court’s great general, Lord Liu. Seeing that Censor Wang Ning had already been raided and his family destroyed, besides taking shelter under Lord Liu, no one in the world could save me. Was I wrong to do this?”

Hao Zhenxiang shook his head: “Constable Wu, the rumors are as they are. You telling me these reasons won’t help. In any case, I’ve delivered my message and said all I came to say. Take care of yourself.”

Wu Dingyuan was about to reply when suddenly the steward knocked on the door: “Master, someone from Marquis Liu’s mansion has come with a message saying there’s urgent business to discuss and you must go immediately.”

Hao Zhenxiang showed no expression as he cupped his hands: “Constable Wu is busy with official duties. I’ll take my leave now.” He turned and walked out. Wu Dingyuan looked at his retreating figure, his heart stirring, and suddenly said: “Instructor Hao, hear me out before you go!”

Hao Zhenxiang stopped and turned back: “What other instructions does Constable Wu have?”

Wu Dingyuan said: “You are an iron-hard hero – why must you mix with people like Jiang Chong and An’dao Jing? Let me introduce you to someone. How about serving under Marquis Liu in the future?”

Hao Zhenxiang’s body trembled slightly, then a flash of sadness passed through his eyes, but this expression quickly disappeared. He shook his head: “Beijing’s official circles are only so big – how could they accommodate a turncoat villain? I appreciate Constable Wu’s good intentions.”

He walked out the main gate and suddenly said: “When we meet again in the future, I only hope we won’t have to fight to the death.”

Wu Dingyuan heard this and suddenly thought of two lines: “Better to be a dog in peaceful times than a person in chaotic times.” Living at this time and place – how could one bear it?

Wu Dingyuan was vexed and troubled, but heard the steward repeatedly urging that the marquis’s mansion was pressing urgently. Wu Dingyuan, fearing to delay military affairs, hurried to the general’s mansion.

As soon as Wu Dingyuan entered the Liu mansion’s main gate, someone urgently grabbed his sleeve. Wu Dingyuan looked carefully and saw it was a military officer he knew well, surnamed Zhao, also a supervisor who often drank with Wu Dingyuan and could be considered somewhat of a friend.

Supervisor Zhao whispered: “Brother Wu! It looks like big trouble. This morning at court, Lord Jiang Chong spoke poison to the emperor, submitting several memorials saying our Marquis Liu’s mansion is unclean, harboring many extremely vicious fugitives with treacherous intentions!”

Wu Dingyuan suddenly had an ominous feeling. Hao Zhenxiang had just left on his front foot, and the impeachment arrived on his back foot. He said in a trembling voice: “What about harboring fugitives? How do you mean?”

Supervisor Zhao shook his head: “I don’t know the details either, only that Jiang Chong named names and seemed to mention your name, saying you murdered innocent people in Xiliang without restraint, then after abandoning your post and fleeing, actually came to the capital and used who knows how much silver to buy a supervisor position from Marquis Liu, then swaggered around the capital lawlessly.”

Wu Dingyuan’s whole body trembled with either anger or fear as he gritted his teeth: “Outrageous! I went through countless hardships all for one wrongful blood case. This Jiang Chong is truly vicious – even now he won’t let me go!”

Supervisor Zhao sighed: “You’re also unlucky. I don’t know what grudge you have with Jiang Chong, but this Lord Jiang’s memorial is viciously worded, making the emperor furious. Now he’s sent a censor to the mansion to investigate – you must be careful in your responses.”

Wu Dingyuan heard this and every pore on his body stood up, his heart crying out in anguish. He thought: “That day when Lord Yang rescued me, he said Marquis Liu was willing to risk his official cap to protect my life and wanted me to settle down in the capital first. Indeed, these past days no one dared disturb me. I thought Marquis Liu’s power was so great that neither Kunlun Mountain nor the Eastern Depot dared harm me anymore. Who knew first Hao Zhenxiang would seek me out, and now this kind of incident would arise… Why is my fate so bumpy…”

If he were really killed by Jiang Chong’s people, that would be that. But if he were now interrogated and condemned by the censor, it would inevitably stain his reputation, and after death he’d probably still face cold words and sneers. Thinking his jianghu reputation was already bad made him feel even more pain and fear.

While thinking, a tall, jade-like man slowly walked toward him – it was Yang Suguan.

Wu Dingyuan hurriedly rushed forward calling: “Lord Yang, Jiang Chong has slandered me in his memorial – you must save me!” This time Jiang Chong’s memorial was malicious, with a censor specially coming to the mansion to investigate the case. If he handled it carelessly, not only would his supervisor position be lost, but he might also be implicated in prison and exiled to the frontier. Wu Dingyuan, thinking of this, felt even more anxious and kept entreating while grabbing Yang Suguan’s hand.

Yang Suguan frowned and firmly grasped Wu Dingyuan’s hand, whispering: “Lord Wu, don’t panic – that would make people look down on us. As long as you act righteously and properly, you needn’t fear those treacherous villains’ wild words.”

Wu Dingyuan heard these words and felt somewhat settled, hurriedly saying: “Your excellency is right. I, Wu Dingyuan, have always been upright and don’t fear their false accusations. His Majesty is wise and will surely clear my name.”

As the two spoke, they had already entered the main hall. They saw an elderly man sitting above – this must be the censor – while Liu Angtian sat below accompanying him. Wu Dingyuan’s heart was uneasy, not knowing whether fortune or misfortune awaited.

Yang Suguan entered the hall and immediately bowed, saying: “Your humble servant Yang Suguan, Vice Director of the Ministry of War, pays respects to Lord He.” Wu Dingyuan quickly knelt down as well, prostrating with his head lowered, not daring to speak or move.

Censor He said: “Nephew Yang, you’ve worked hard. Please rise quickly. Is this kneeling person that Wu Dingyuan?” Wu Dingyuan prostrated on the ground and said in a trembling voice: “My humble name defiles your excellency’s ears. Your humble servant is indeed Wu Dingyuan.”

Lord He said: “Alright! Raise your head and speak.” Wu Dingyuan quickly raised his head and saw that Lord He wasn’t very old, about fifty years old. A pair of eyes stared intently at him as if trying to dig out some secret. Wu Dingyuan felt uncomfortable under his gaze and quickly turned his eyes toward the ground.

Lord He said: “Wu Dingyuan, when you were an official in Xiliang, did you murder the entire Yanling Escort Agency and embezzle one hundred thousand taels of official silver? Confess truthfully!”

Wu Dingyuan was greatly shocked and repeatedly cried out his innocence. Just as he was about to explain, he heard Yang Suguan say: “Reporting to Lord He, this Wu Dingyuan was framed by others. There are hidden circumstances involved. If you wish to investigate the case carefully, you might make a trip to Xiliang to examine the official documents in detail. Then right and wrong will surely be determined.”

Wu Dingyuan heard Yang Suguan defend him and felt his heart rising and falling, fearing Lord He wouldn’t believe. While worried, he saw Yang Suguan wink at him as if telling him to be at ease. Wu Dingyuan thought: “Looking at Yang Langzhong’s manner, he seems confident. Could he have a way to deal with this Lord He?”

Lord He heard Yang Suguan’s words and only coughed once, glancing sideways at Wu Dingyuan, his emotions hard to read.

Wu Dingyuan saw his expression and still felt uneasy, when suddenly he heard Liu Angtian say: “I say, Lord He! This Supervisor Wu under my command is extremely honest. If anyone says he murdered innocent people and stole treasury money, this old man absolutely won’t believe it.”

Wu Dingyuan heard Liu Angtian also speak for him and felt slightly reassured, thinking: “Marquis Liu carries such weight – even he’s vouching for me. Perhaps I can turn misfortune into fortune this time.”

Lord He made a sound and walked down the steps to carefully examine Wu Dingyuan. Wu Dingyuan felt extremely uncomfortable under his scrutiny. When their eyes met, Wu Dingyuan, kneeling on the ground, could only laugh dryly a few times, not knowing what else to do.

After a long while, Lord He suddenly burst into laughter, then turned and walked back to his seat. Wu Dingyuan didn’t know his fate, hearing him laugh but not knowing whether it boded good or ill – he could only worry endlessly.

But then he heard Lord He laugh: “Good! Since Marquis Liu has come forward to plead for him, what could be false? I see this Wu Dingyuan has an honest face and doesn’t look like an extremely vicious person at all. Lord Jiang may have been somewhat excessive in his accusations this time.”

Wu Dingyuan heard this and was overjoyed, repeatedly kowtowing. Lord He picked up his tea bowl and smiled: “Alright! Seeing how frightened you are – get up and speak!” But Wu Dingyuan remained prostrated on the ground, not daring to move.

Liu Angtian walked down into the hall and personally helped Wu Dingyuan up: “Nephew Wu, you needn’t panic. This old man knows you’re a person of loyal heart and righteous courage. I’ll definitely protect you to the end. Though there are many treacherous officials at court, no one can harm you in the slightest.”

Lord He nodded: “The marquis speaks truly. Consider what relationship the marquis and I have – doesn’t Lord Jiang know this? The emperor assigned this case to me with the intention of ‘making big things small and small things nothing.’ Lord Jiang should be sensible and not cause trouble!”

Wu Dingyuan made a sound of understanding and only then realized Liu Angtian had made arrangements long ago. He immediately knelt down again and choked up: “Thank you both for your protection. Even if I were ground to powder, it wouldn’t be enough to repay one ten-thousandth of this great kindness.”

Liu Angtian stroked his beard and smiled slightly: “I see you’ve also been frightened! You go sit down first. Stay for dinner tonight – I have several matters to assign to you.” Wu Dingyuan quickly kowtowed and then hurried out.

Wu Dingyuan emerged from the main hall drenched in cold sweat. Led by servants to the side hall for tea, his mind was in chaos. Though he had escaped the immediate danger, his heart just couldn’t settle down. Thinking of Hao Zhenxiang’s visit during the day added to his worries.

While thinking, he saw someone dressed in military officer’s uniform walking toward him. Wu Dingyuan’s mind was chaotic and he paid no attention, but that person stopped and stood straight in front of him.

Wu Dingyuan looked up and saw a man with a high nose and wide mouth, wearing a curved saber, whom he didn’t recognize. Wu Dingyuan stood up and cupped his hands: “I am Wu Dingyuan. May I ask if you have any instructions?”

The man didn’t answer, just stared at Wu Dingyuan with both eyes. Wu Dingyuan was puzzled and didn’t know what to make of it, when suddenly he saw Yang Suguan approaching and saying to that man: “General Qin came early. Marquis Liu is still busy right now – please rest a while first.”

The big man didn’t reply, just looked Wu Dingyuan up and down. Wu Dingyuan didn’t know this person’s background and though he felt uncomfortable being stared at, he couldn’t very well object and kept signaling to Yang Suguan with his eyes.

Yang Suguan understood and quickly said: “Brother Wu, let me introduce you to a heroic figure.” He pointed to the big man: “This is General Qin Zhonghai, the number one fierce general under General Zuo Congyi.”

Though Wu Dingyuan hadn’t been in the capital long, he had heard of Qin Zhonghai’s reputation. He quickly cupped his hands: “Wu Dingyuan pays respects to General Qin!” Qin Zhonghai returned half a bow: “I dare not.”

The three sat down. Qin Zhonghai said: “Supervisor Wu, I want to borrow something from you.”

Wu Dingyuan was startled, then smiled: “What does the general command? Your humble servant will comply with everything, though I fear my humble circumstances might make your excellency laugh.”

Qin Zhonghai said: “Supervisor Wu, don’t be suspicious. I’m not asking you for money, nor am I looking to cause you trouble. Today I want to borrow a person from you.”

Wu Dingyuan felt strange: “My camp has several hundred officers and soldiers. If General Qin wishes to deploy them, I’ll naturally comply. I just don’t know which person the general wants to borrow?”

Qin Zhonghai said: “The person I want to borrow knows astronomy above and geography below, accomplished in both civil and military arts. Would the supervisor be willing to lend him?”

Wu Dingyuan didn’t understand Qin Zhonghai’s intention and only smiled apologetically: “General Qin jests – how could my army have such a person?”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “Brother, this is where you’re wrong! You have such talent beside you yet don’t know it – isn’t this wasting good heroes and making people gnash their teeth?”

Wu Dingyuan heard his stern words and didn’t know what to do, not daring to reply for a long time.

Yang Suguan said: “Supervisor Wu has just arrived in the capital and is busy with many affairs. If there are any oversights, they’re not intentional. General Qin, please don’t blame him for this.”

Qin Zhonghai said: “Both gentlemen, I’m not here to cause you trouble. Frankly speaking, I just can’t stand seeing heroes fallen on hard times with aspirations unfulfilled – that’s why I said a few extra words.”

Wu Dingyuan quickly replied: “I’m grateful for General Qin’s teachings and will deeply reflect. I just don’t know which person your excellency wants to borrow – please indicate.”

He didn’t want to argue further and provoke conflict, so he quickly acknowledged his fault to muddle through.

Qin Zhonghai said: “Lord Wu has someone beside him surnamed Lu, named Yun. Are you familiar with him?”

Wu Dingyuan was startled, then sighed: “Brother Lu left without saying goodbye these past days. There’s been no word from him at all.”

Qin Zhonghai said coldly: “That needn’t trouble Lord Wu.” He called toward the door: “Brother Lu, come in quickly! Let’s all reminisce!”

Wu Dingyuan was stunned to see someone slowly walking in – it was Lu Yun. Wu Dingyuan opened his mouth wide, strode forward and embraced Lu Yun tightly, shouting: “Brother! Why did you leave without saying goodbye? You worried your brother terribly!”

Lu Yun had been outside and didn’t know the content of their conversation. He now smiled apologetically: “These past days I drank heavily and was slow in my duties, causing Brother Wu much trouble. Thinking this couldn’t continue, I left on my own. Please forgive my rash transgression, Brother Wu.”

Wu Dingyuan lowered his head and sighed: “It’s all my fault for delaying your future prospects and not helping you achieve success – it’s all your elder brother’s fault…” His guilt was evident in his words.

Lu Yun quickly said: “Brother Wu, please don’t blame yourself. It’s my own lack of progress. These days, without your care and support, where else could I have gone?”

Qin Zhonghai had originally been very dissatisfied with Wu Dingyuan, but seeing his genuine emotion and that it wasn’t fake, his anger diminished considerably. He interjected: “Alright! In the future when Master Lu serves the court as a strategist, he’ll surely have his day to distinguish himself. Brother Wu needn’t feel bad!”

Wu Dingyuan asked strangely: “Strategic planning? How does this come about?”

Everyone was about to speak when they heard a servant say: “Master requests all the gentlemen to dine in the inner hall.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “We can continue this talk later – eating is important!” He took Lu Yun’s hand and led him directly into the hall.

A servant to the side quickly stopped Lu Yun and asked: “This young master is…?”

Qin Zhonghai knew Lu Yun had some friction with the Liu mansion and feared Lu Yun’s temper might flare up and he’d swagger off again. He quickly pushed the servant aside and, without waiting for Lu Yun to speak, the two walked in shoulder to shoulder. The servant knew Qin Zhonghai held the rank of brigade general and had always been one of Liu Angtian’s great generals – how could he dare stop them? He watched helplessly as they entered the inner hall.

Liu Angtian had arranged a family banquet to entertain Censor He, inviting his subordinate generals and trusted followers to accompany them. When Qin Zhonghai and the others entered, they saw Lord He and Liu Angtian already seated and talking.

Lord He’s eyes swept over them, looking Qin Zhonghai and the others up and down, then turned to Liu Angtian with a smile: “Lord Liu, I see your household is truly full of talent! All are civil ministers, military generals, heroes and outstanding men. You truly have exceptional judgment!”

Liu Angtian laughed heartily, but suddenly seeing Lu Yun standing by the table, he couldn’t help being startled and felt displeased, thinking: “This Wu Dingyuan really is something – how did he bring this person again?” But he didn’t want to scold his subordinates in front of Lord He, so he remained calm and had servants arrange seats for them.

Lu Yun originally didn’t want to come to the Liu mansion again, but under Qin Zhonghai’s strong invitation he had no choice but to follow. Who knew he’d not only enter the Liu mansion but also have to dine at the same table with Liu Angtian? His heart was uneasy, but seeing Liu Angtian’s peaceful expression as if he didn’t mind at all, his heart settled somewhat and he sat down.

Lord He smiled at Wu Dingyuan and raised his cup: “Supervisor Wu, my harsh words outside earlier were all for official business. Don’t take offense!”

Wu Dingyuan quickly said: “Your excellency sees ten thousand li clearly and cleared this humble one’s grievances. I’m grateful beyond measure – how could I blame your excellency?”

Liu Angtian smiled: “Dingyuan should drink this cup – it’s to calm your nerves. Lord He drinking this cup is wronged – helping others and then being fined a drink.”

Lord He smiled: “What is Marquis Liu saying? With so many talented people present, all future pillars of the court, how could I not toast a few more cups?” Everyone laughed together and raised their cups to drink.

Lord He saw Qin Zhonghai in military dress and his mind stirred: “Is this general surnamed Qin?”

Qin Zhonghai nodded: “Indeed, this humble general is surnamed Qin, given name Zhonghai.”

Lord He was pleased: “They say ‘The Liu school has two generals – civil Yang and martial Qin.’ I’m familiar with this nephew Yang – his father Lord Yang and I are old friends. But this old man has never had the chance to meet our General Qin. Come, come, since we’re fated to meet today, let’s drink a cup.”

Qin Zhonghai saw no one paying attention to Lu Yun and feared he’d be left out. He smiled slightly: “Your excellency, don’t rush to drink – let me introduce someone first, how about it?” He patted Lu Yun’s shoulder: “This Brother Lu Yun of mine is a famous military strategist of our dynasty. Your excellency must make his acquaintance.”

Lord He had already noticed Lu Yun’s jade-like bearing and left an impression, originally thinking this young gentleman was Liu Angtian’s nephew. Hearing Qin Zhonghai’s introduction made him even more delighted. He said to Liu Angtian: “Good for you, Marquis Liu! With remarkable people, extraordinary scholars, civil ministers and fierce generals under your command, I see your position as Grand Commander is quite secure!”

Liu Angtian originally disliked Lu Yun, but hearing Qin Zhonghai’s introduction and Lord He’s great admiration, his anger gradually subsided. He repeatedly smiled: “You flatter me! You flatter me!”

Everyone drank heartily when Lord He suddenly said: “This old man sees the western frontier bandits growing daily stronger. This Timur Khanate has expanded thousands of li and annexed dozens of countries, already showing the momentum of Genghis Khan of old. We mustn’t let them invade the Central Plains and become a great disaster again!”

Liu Angtian understood Lord He was getting to the main topic and nodded in agreement: “Yes! Recently there’s been continuous warfare on the northern frontier. Our dynasty and the Oirat can be said to be evenly matched. If there’s also turmoil in the western frontier, with China attacked front and rear and military deployment difficulties, that would truly be the court’s greatest worry!”

Lord He looked at the many young people at the table: “In former times when Western Xia invaded the Central Land, the great Song relied on Han Qi and Fan Zhongyan defending properly – as they said, ‘Western bandits heard them and their hearts and courage turned cold.’ Things change and stars shift – several hundred years have passed. Today our dynasty has so many heroic young people – what should we fear?” He took out an official document: “To be frank, His Majesty has commanded that within a few months I must serve as envoy to the Timur Khanate.”

Everyone made sounds of surprise, feeling quite unexpected.

Lord He’s expression became grave: “This time His Majesty hopes this old man can establish contact and relations with the western frontier before the Oirat do, to prevent the barbarians from surrounding China. Today I came here not only for Nephew Dingyuan’s matter, but also to ask everyone’s assistance in this affair.”

Liu Angtian nodded: “Your excellency’s business is my business, Liu Angtian’s. Whatever you command, just assign it.”

Lord He, seeing Liu Angtian’s immediate promise, felt much more at ease. Yang Suguan asked: “Has the court devised any good strategy for your excellency’s mission to the Khanate to ensure friendship between the two nations?”

Lord He showed a helpless expression: “To speak shamefully, this time we’re going to make a marriage alliance.”

Everyone heard the words “marriage alliance” and couldn’t help standing up together. This marriage alliance had been the Celestial Dynasty’s humiliation since ancient times – sending royal daughters to the barbarians for marriage agreements to seek peace between the two nations. If imperial daughters and princesses could bear sons to inherit the throne, future barbarian khans, remembering the Chinese blood in their bodies, would respect the Central Plains and eliminate frontier troubles.

Liu Angtian, not wanting his subordinate generals to speak contemptuously, quickly said: “Since your excellency will be sent as envoy to the western frontier next month, I think we shouldn’t delay. Tomorrow at morning court I’ll submit a memorial requesting His Majesty to send troops for protection. If your excellency doesn’t decline, I’ll personally assign several capable subordinates to accompany you out of the passes.”

Lord He nodded: “I was previously worried about unsafe roads and the barbarians’ fierce cruelty, but now having your excellency’s personal golden promise, there’s nothing to worry about!”

Liu Angtian asked: “Which princess is marrying in this alliance?” Lord He coughed lightly: “This time the heavy responsibility falls entirely on our Princess Yinchuan.”

Liu Angtian made a sound of lament: “What a pity for Princess Yinchuan – noble and beautiful, she’s an imperial model. Who’d have thought she’d have to wander in foreign lands.”

Lord He said: “In the entire court, only Princess Yinchuan has always been most understanding of the greater picture. If not for her, who else could bear this great responsibility?”

Everyone sighed endlessly, drinking until deep into the night before dispersing.
