Chapter 7: The Sheepskin Mystery

Seeing Liu Angtian escort Lord He out, Yang Suguan again pulled Wu Dingyuan aside for quiet conversation, seeming to have some important matter to discuss. Qin Zhonghai, seeing no one coming to attend to them, also rose to take his leave when suddenly a servant hurried over: “General Qin, Lord Liu requests you to speak in his study.” Qin Zhonghai made a sound and smiled at Lu Yun: “It seems Lord Liu wants to have a deep conversation with you and me. Let’s go together.” He was about to pull Lu Yun inside with him.

The servant quickly said: “Master only instructed me to invite you alone.” Lu Yun was startled and about to speak when Qin Zhonghai looked up at the sky and said coldly to the servant: “If that’s the case, go back and tell the marquis that Qin Zhonghai left in a hurry and couldn’t be found.” With that, he actually turned to leave.

The servant, fearing Qin Zhonghai would really leave and he’d be blamed for it later – a responsibility he couldn’t bear – quickly reached out to stop him with an apologetic smile: “General, don’t be angry! However you’re happy is fine. If you want to bring this gentleman in, it’s all up to you! Just say a few words for me in front of the master – don’t say I neglected my duties.” Qin Zhonghai took out a small silver ingot and stuffed it into the servant’s hand, laughing: “Damn, so much nonsense.” He directly pulled Lu Yun’s hand and walked inside.

The two had just turned into the inner hall when they suddenly saw a beautiful woman standing in the inner courtyard with a worried expression, seemingly deep in thought. Qin Zhonghai saw the woman and his expression changed slightly, his steps stopping. Lu Yun knew this woman must be a relative of the Liu family – either Liu Angtian’s daughter-in-law or his daughter or younger relative. Meeting late at night would be highly improper, so he also stopped.

The woman heard footsteps and turned around quietly. Seeing Qin Zhonghai, her delicate body immediately trembled.

Qin Zhonghai bowed and cupped his hands, saying gravely: “Qin Zhonghai pays respects to Seventh Madam. Only because the marquis invited me late at night did I presume to enter. Please forgive any offense.” The beautiful woman gracefully walked forward several steps. Lu Yun saw this woman had bright eyes and white teeth, snow-white skin. Though she had some years, this only enhanced her myriad charms – she had the bearing of a peerless beauty.

The beautiful woman was about to speak when Liu Angtian had already emerged from his study: “Zhonghai, why aren’t you coming in quickly? What are you doing here?” The woman saw Liu Angtian come out and directly turned her head to bend down and admire the flowers and plants.

Liu Angtian saw Lu Yun was also there and couldn’t help frowning. Qin Zhonghai read his expression and smiled: “This humble general knows the marquis is eager for talent and searches for famous scholars throughout the world, so I brought Brother Lu Yun along. It’s purely from a heart of recommending talent, absolutely nothing else. The marquis can command armies and enter the court – his heart can hold a boat. Surely the marquis won’t take my small transgression to heart.” These words immediately cornered Liu Angtian, making it difficult for him to object. Indeed, Liu Angtian made a sound and pointed his finger at Qin Zhonghai’s forehead: “Zhonghai, ah Zhonghai! You’re just this fearless of heaven and earth! Among all the hundred-some court ministers, only this old man can tolerate you!” Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily and didn’t mind. Lu Yun saw the intimate behavior between the two and realized they must be very familiar. Liu Angtian said no more and walked toward his study.

Qin Zhonghai saw Lu Yun’s uneasy expression and smiled: “Brother Lu, don’t stand there dazed. Come quickly.” He wouldn’t let Lu Yun think wildly and pulled him over with one hand.

Everyone entered the study. Liu Angtian indicated for the two to sit down. Lu Yun was still hesitating when Liu Angtian said gravely: “As they say, ‘Don’t use those you doubt, don’t doubt those you use.’ This old man has always had this temperament. Since Zhonghai has recommended you repeatedly, I’ll consider you one of my own! When I tell you to sit, you sit – no need for false courtesy!” Lu Yun was startled, thanked him, and sat down.

Qin Zhonghai heard Liu Angtian’s words and was very pleased: “The marquis gives me this face – Zhonghai will surely repay this in the future.” Liu Angtian chuckled: “With you little rascal trying to trade face with me? In the past, when you wanted to use someone, when did this old man ever interfere?” He waved his hand, letting Lu Yun’s matter pass.

Qin Zhonghai had followed Liu Angtian for a long time and knew he was no longer holding grudges, so he was very pleased.

Lu Yun saw Qin Zhonghai’s repeated recommendations, fearing Liu Angtian wouldn’t employ him. Thinking of this, he couldn’t help feeling extremely grateful.

After a while, Liu Angtian drank some tea and said: “Tonight I called you here for a major matter.” Qin Zhonghai made a sound: “Is it about Lord He’s mission and the marriage alliance?” Liu Angtian shook his head: “That’s court business. We’re just ordered to provide protection – it doesn’t count as a major matter. The major matter I speak of will surely involve the fate of the realm in the future. This matter is of great importance and must be handled carefully.” Qin Zhonghai heard him speak so seriously and couldn’t help being startled. Lu Yun also paid attention.

Liu Angtian said: “A few days ago, this old man’s carriage was returning to the mansion when I suddenly saw large numbers of troops surrounding Prince’s Alley. I saw it was An’dao Jing of the Jinyiwei capturing criminals. Originally I didn’t want to intervene, but for some reason that criminal rushed toward the crowd. Nephew Yang, fearing the person would disturb this old man, captured him.”

Qin Zhonghai nodded: “I’ve heard of this incident. That fugitive was Supervisor Wu Dingyuan, right!”

Liu Angtian said: “Zhonghai’s guess is correct – that fugitive was indeed Wu Dingyuan. Because Nephew Suguan captured Wu Dingyuan, both sides got into a dispute. Later high monks from Shaolin Temple arrived, and only then did the conflict cease.” Lu Yun heard them discuss that day’s situation and recalled the danger of that time – he still felt chills.

Liu Angtian paused and continued: “After the Jinyiwei crowd withdrew, Nephew Suguan hurriedly presented me with something, saying it was Wu Dingyuan’s transfer to me. When I received the item and looked, I saw it was a piece of sheepskin with dense foreign characters written on it. Seeing this, my heart immediately shook greatly – I knew this thing had finally been dug up, and Jiang Chong’s gang, who have been running rampant unchecked, would finally face their day of destruction!”

Liu Angtian’s voice trembled slightly, showing how excited he had been at that time and place. Qin Zhonghai had followed Liu Angtian for a long time and rarely saw him so agitated. Knowing the matter Liu Angtian was about to explain was truly significant, he raised his eyebrows and asked: “Marquis, this is strange – it’s just a piece of sheepskin. How can it eliminate Jiang Chong’s gang? This is really hard to believe.”

Liu Angtian chuckled: “Are there few strange and bizarre things in the court? If this sheepskin were ordinary, why would Jiang Chong send people thousands of li to investigate? All the way from Xiliang to the capital?”

Qin Zhonghai nodded: “This matter I was just about to ask about.” Liu Angtian heard this and suddenly sighed, shaking his head: “Sigh… it’s a long story… to talk about this sheepskin’s origins, we must start from forty years ago.” Qin Zhonghai was startled: “Forty years ago?”

Liu Angtian didn’t respond. Under the flickering candlelight on his aged face, he lowered his head as if lost in endless memories and recollections.

After a long while, Liu Angtian said absently: “Forty years ago I was only twenty years old, in my heroic youth, even younger than you by several years. But thanks to the late emperor’s favor, I was already the court’s Cavalry General, holding the rank of Commander-in-Chief, stationed at the northern frontier.” Liu Angtian’s face showed a trace of smile as he spoke, seeming to remember his youthful success. Qin Zhonghai saw his expression and knew he was recalling his youthful heroic deeds, so he also smiled slightly and didn’t interrupt, letting him be lost in thought.

Liu Angtian said: “Speaking of past events, the situation then was vastly different from now. The northern frontier was peaceful and quiet, unlike these years of continuous warfare. What the court worried about was actually the Western Regions.” Qin Zhonghai made a sound – he had been defending the northern frontier these past years, fighting until blood flowed like rivers and corpses piled like mountains. He never expected the court had once been at peace with the Oirat, which was quite beyond his expectations.

Liu Angtian continued: “Among them, what most troubled the court was an unprecedented hero named Yexian. This man was wildly ambitious and repeatedly invaded the frontier, killing countless soldiers and civilians, making the western frontier empty of people for hundreds of li. The court was greatly vexed by this man’s long harassment and repeatedly sent people to pacify him, but the envoys all returned with their ears cut off, crying in pain.”

Qin Zhonghai made a sound: “So arrogant? He truly deserved death!”

Liu Angtian nodded and continued: “The late emperor, seeing Yexian’s wild arrogance, was naturally furious beyond measure. He repeatedly mobilized troops and dispatched generals for expeditions, fighting several major battles solidly. But this Yexian had great talent and strategy – the several great generals the court sent out either surrendered or died, with none returning. The late emperor saw Yexian was so formidable that if they continued this vicious struggle, the situation would only become more unfavorable. But to speak of peace – our late emperor was a proud man and really couldn’t swallow this humiliation. Not long after, he finally issued an edict commanding the court’s most martially valorous Grand Commander Hou Yunwen to campaign. Grand Commander Hou led over two hundred thousand troops and fought Yexian Khan for over a hundred rounds. This great battle shook heaven and earth and is historically known as the ‘Battle of Jade Gate Pass.'”

Qin Zhonghai said strangely: “The Battle of Jade Gate Pass? How have I never heard of it?”

Liu Angtian sighed lightly and continued: “Grand Commander Hou led his army in bloody battle. Both sides fought for half a year, finally engaging in a life-and-death struggle outside Jade Gate Pass. This field battle lasted a full seven days and seven nights. It was as if heaven had taken away their souls – Yexian Khan actually defeated Grand Commander Hou’s formation with fewer troops against many. Grand Commander Hou fought desperately but was outmatched, was defeated and committed suicide, and the two hundred thousand great army was completely slaughtered.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed secretly in his heart and cursed silently: “No wonder I never heard of this great battle – it was such a disastrous defeat that naturally the court would cover it up. Heh heh, they say where did all these useless people in our dynasty come from? Turns out they were already gathered at court thirty years ago. It must have been hard for the late emperor to find such a large group of useless waste all at once.”

Lu Yun turned to look and saw Qin Zhonghai with a smile on his face, but couldn’t guess why he was amused.

Liu Angtian, not noticing their expressions, said: “After Grand Commander Hou died, the late emperor saw the situation had greatly deteriorated and didn’t dare open the passes for war again. He changed from offensive to defensive strategy, annually reinforcing the western frontier and building fortifications for defense. But Yexian used troops like a god – though there were large armies defending, he still harassed continuously. Over several years he constantly broke through passes and killed people. Countless soldiers died in foreign lands at barbarian hands. Later, any court general, no matter how brave and invincible or heroic, would be terrified upon hearing of deployment to the western frontier. At that time, Jade Gate Pass was truly more frightening than the gates of hell!”

Qin Zhonghai chuckled: “Too bad I was born at the wrong time – if I had been there then, I would definitely have been the first to request deployment to the western frontier.”

Liu Angtian spat and scolded: “Ignorant child, speaking so arrogantly!”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “Heroes should die in battle at the frontier – that’s what’s truly satisfying! How could I compare with those who covet life and fear death?”

Liu Angtian ignored him and continued: “Seeing Yexian growing stronger daily, after several invasions and harassments, our court’s ruler and ministers could not resist foreign humiliation and could only watch helplessly as strong enemies ran rampant. The late emperor’s heart was pained, feeling he had failed his ancestors. Daily he blamed himself constantly. Originally quite cheerful and heroic, after several years of worry and distress, he actually became melancholy and dispirited, constantly sighing sadly. Once when envoys from neighboring Western Region countries mentioned Yexian’s name, the late emperor’s wine cup inexplicably fell from his hand and shattered. All civil and military officials were shocked. Seeing the emperor’s worry, fear, and pain, yet unable to share his burden in the slightest, all were heartbroken. From then on, the entire court took western frontier peace as the first priority.”

Speaking to this point, Liu Angtian’s face showed a trace of radiance as he smiled: “Just when all ministers were at their wits’ end, a young man came to the capital. It was rumored this person had previously been a Taoist priest who studied martial arts and magic, but later for some unknown reason suddenly decided to return to secular life. This man abandoned his carefree existence and alone ventured to the capital, determined to accomplish great deeds.”

Qin Zhonghai made a sound: “After listening to so much depressing talk, finally here comes someone promising.”

Liu Angtian continued: “This person traveled thousands of li to the capital to take the imperial examination. By fate and circumstance, when heroes arise, that year this person topped the realm and achieved first place in the imperial examination. When the results were announced that year, all civil and military officials were shocked – everyone called it absurd. Who knew our dynasty’s top scholar would be taken by someone of Taoist origins whose name was unknown. Even stranger, when that person had an audience with the sacred emperor in the Golden Throne Hall, the late emperor, seeing his extraordinary bone structure and knowing he had practiced martial arts, told him to show his skills. Originally meant as a joke, who knew that person would calmly lift the stone lion in front of the hall with one hand and leap about as if it were nothing.

“This startled all the officials – the civil ministers all avoided him like a monster, fearing contact. The military generals also, because he had risen through scholarly examinations, were unwilling to be too close to him. Later even that year’s chief examiner was unwilling to recommend this person. As the saying goes, ‘Without people at court, don’t become an official.’ Seeing the entire court so cold toward him, that person had no relatives or friends at court and was thus sent to the Hanlin Academy to compile histories. Pitifully, his martial arts would be buried for life.” Qin Zhonghai, knowing such was the way of the world, could only sigh.

“Heaven had eyes – one day by chance the late emperor visited the Hanlin Academy for lectures and unintentionally chatted with this person. Since Grand Commander Hou’s disastrous defeat, the late emperor read military books daily – whether ‘Duke Tai’s Strategy’ or ‘Sun Tzu’s Art of War,’ he could recite them fluently. That day the late emperor, chatting enthusiastically, consulted him about several difficult military problems. That person was confident and spoke eloquently, actually making the late emperor sigh in admiration and praise him highly. Within a year, this person was transferred to the Ministry of War as Left Vice Minister. That same year the Western Regions were in great turmoil again. In the Golden Throne Hall the late emperor called for famous generals to meet the attack. All civil and military officials were silent as cicadas – not one dared respond. When the emperor was greatly disappointed, two people leaped from their seats and shouted ‘I volunteer!’ One was that hero, and the other…”

Lu Yun guessed Liu Angtian’s meaning and smiled slightly: “The other hero must have been you, old master.”

Liu Angtian laughed heartily: “I dare not – it was indeed this humble one!”

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “The marquis is a hero without peer – besides you, who else in the current court would dare gamble with their lives and wealth and honor like this?”

Liu Angtian chuckled: “Do you take me for a desperado?”

Qin Zhonghai asked: “Hearing the marquis speak all this way, I’m completely confused – what exactly was that person’s surname and name? Why have I never seen such a figure at court?”

Liu Angtian’s face flashed with shadow as he smiled bitterly: “This is a long story… sigh… some things are better left unsaid. This person later held the title ‘Marquis Wude’ – let’s just call him by that…”

Liu Angtian, speaking to this point, suddenly stared intently at Qin Zhonghai, a strange expression flashing across his face, but in just an instant it returned to normal calm. He continued: “At that time the late emperor, seeing us two had heroic courage and agreed to the western expedition, was very pleased. He appointed him as Western Campaign Commander and me as General-in-Chief. We each led fifty thousand troops and hurried to the western frontier.”

Qin Zhonghai rubbed his hands together: “The marquis personally campaigning in the west must have been absolutely spectacular!”

Liu Angtian smiled slightly: “We two were fated for success. After reaching the Western Regions, Marquis Wude and I fought shoulder to shoulder, battling Yexian’s generals for over fifty rounds with great victories in every battle, recapturing much lost territory. Our dynasty’s prestige rivaled that of the Han and Tang periods. The late emperor was overjoyed and greatly rewarded us both, enfeoffing Marquis Wude as Western Campaign Grand Commander and further enfeoffing me as Northern Campaign Grand Commander. From then on, one guarded the western frontier and one defended the northern border. At that time court friends praised us, saying ‘Western Baxian, Northern Angtian!’ We two enjoyed five years of good times like this.”

Both Qin and Lu, imagining those heroic deeds of the past, were filled with longing, only regretting they weren’t born in time to catch that earth-shaking era. Liu Angtian saw their admiring expressions and knew their thoughts. He nodded and smiled: “Those with aspirations are like this – you young people should strive well, and you’ll also have such glorious days in the future.”

Qin Zhonghai chuckled: “We’d also need such strong opponents! Though the Oirat are fierce, they’re far inferior to Yexian.” He actually sighed as if filled with regret.

Liu Angtian continued: “Since Marquis Wude and I took charge, Yexian Khan’s arrogance has been greatly diminished and his territory much reduced. One year there was heavy snow outside the passes and the climate became unusually harsh. Yexian’s troops and people suffered heavy casualties with livestock scattered and homeless. Prince Min saw this heaven-sent opportunity and strongly advised the late emperor to personally lead the expedition. All civil ministers greatly supported this.”

Qin Zhonghai exclaimed: “Imperial personal expedition! That’s no small matter!”

Liu Angtian waved his hand for him not to interrupt and continued: “Our late emperor was single-mindedly focused on revenge and restoration. Hearing his brother’s words, he was naturally extremely excited. But this imperial personal expedition was no ordinary matter – it would probably exhaust the nation’s strength enormously. Marquis Wude and I naturally opposed it and advised the late emperor to abandon the idea. Who knew someone accused us, saying Marquis Wude and I wanted to monopolize the achievements and feared the late emperor would steal our glory. After this memorial was submitted, though the late emperor didn’t blame us, he wasn’t very pleased either and became quite suspicious of us.”

Liu Angtian continued: “Marquis Wude and I understood that words could be fearsome, so we could only remain silent and dared not speak much. That year in February spring, the late emperor finally decided on personal expedition. He personally led six hundred thousand troops with over a hundred fierce generals from the court. Before the point-selecting platform he bestowed imperial wine and swore to level the western frontier and capture the enemy chieftain alive.

“Marquis Wude, seeing the late emperor determined on personal expedition, volunteered himself, requesting to serve as vanguard for the six hundred thousand army to clear the way. But the petty people at court were quite wary of him, deeply fearing he would easily defeat the enemy’s main force and monopolize the glory, so none were willing to let him go along. Marquis Wude, deeply fearing for the emperor’s safety, naturally disagreed. All the ministers argued over this endlessly and were quite displeased. Finally the late emperor made the imperial decision commanding Marquis Wude to accompany the army but not serve as vanguard. Instead he would defend the rear, guarding Jade Gate Pass, and without the sacred emperor’s instructions could not leave the pass to engage in battle. The ministers still felt this wasn’t enough and, fearing Marquis Wude would use surprise troops with other schemes, sent a military officer named Jiang Chong to supervise the army, afraid Marquis Wude would leave the pass on his own to achieve merit.” Both Qin and Lu cried out “Ah!” upon hearing Jiang Chong’s name.

Liu Angtian’s expression became grave: “This edict was very strange – how could that Jiang Chong, merely a school-level officer, supervise court ministers? When someone questioned the emperor about this, he said this was Prince Min’s idea and told us to be more tolerant.”

Qin Zhonghai frowned: “Prince Min? Who exactly is this person?”

Liu Angtian cupped his hands: “Prince Min is the late emperor’s blood brother – the current emperor.”

Both Qin and Lu exclaimed in shock.

Qin Zhonghai asked: “Didn’t the marquis go along with this personal expedition?”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “At that time someone advised the late emperor to fear the northern Oirat might take the opportunity to attack our dynasty’s heartland, so the late emperor commanded me to remain in the north for strict defense. Though I wanted to disobey orders, with Marquis Wude’s precedent, how could the late emperor tolerate my presumption? He immediately sent me off to tend horses and sheep.”

Qin Zhonghai sighed: “These people are narrow-minded and truly can’t accomplish great things.” Liu Angtian showed a bitter smile: “This can’t be entirely blamed on them. At that time I was young and hot-tempered, never yielding to anyone in daily life. Meeting these jealous people, if I wasn’t sent to serve in the army, what else could be done?” Speaking to this point, he turned to look at Lu Yun: “Our Nephew Lu also has quite a temper, just like I was when young. If you don’t learn to restrain yourself in the future, you’ll probably suffer for it.”

Lu Yun’s heart chilled: “Lu Yun will certainly reflect on this. Please don’t worry, marquis.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “Marquis, though your temper was fierce, didn’t you still achieve such high office? How is it that once you reach high position you start contradicting your past self?”

Liu Angtian was slightly displeased and said sternly: “I’m teaching young people – what business is it of yours to interrupt? You’re also a no-good thing! Daily full of crude language, untidy clothing, completely coarse and filthy! You don’t go reflect on yourself properly yet dare argue back and talk nonsense! What kind of behavior is this!”

Qin Zhonghai laughed dryly and made a face at Lu Yun. Having followed Liu Angtian for a long time, their relationship was deep and they spoke with few restraints. Whether contradicting or sharply scolding, they never hurt their true feelings.

Liu Angtian drank tea to cool his temper and continued: “This personal expedition had many troops and fierce generals – a full six hundred thousand army pressing forward. Just the vehicles transporting grain stretched for a hundred li. Seeing the emperor personally at the front lines, every soldier was spirited and high, all hoping to show their martial prowess before the throne and become famous throughout the world in the future – completely unlike their previous worried and distressed appearance. When news spread, Yexian was greatly shocked, knowing the great disaster of national destruction was imminent. He humbled himself and urgently sent people to sue for peace, earnestly begging the late emperor’s forgiveness. The late emperor, in his high spirits, how could he be willing to forgive this longtime enemy? On the spot he repaid him in kind, commanding people to cut off the envoy’s ears and beat him out with clubs, naturally venting his anger thoroughly.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed heartily: “Satisfying! Satisfying!”

Liu Angtian said: “The late emperor intended to completely defeat Yexian and destroy his country. The generals privately assessed the situation and all felt this expedition would surely succeed – even if they couldn’t destroy Yexian in one stroke, they could severely damage his strength so he couldn’t cause trouble for several years. At that time the situation between the two countries was clear even to three-year-old children. Yexian, seeing the great势已去 with national destruction before his eyes, simply raised all his national troops – totaling two hundred thousand – preparing for a spectacular decisive battle, absolutely refusing to surrender lightly.

“When the two armies fought, our dynasty was unstoppable, winning several great victories consecutively. The great army pressed to the city, killing right to within ten li of Yexian’s capital. Yexian, seeing national destruction was imminent, could only risk leaving the city for field battle, wanting a desperate struggle with the late emperor. But the disparity in strength between both sides was too great – though Yexian was brave and skilled in war, relying on his own strength alone, how could he resist six hundred thousand troops’ assault? After fierce fighting for three days and three nights, Yexian was finally outmatched. His personal guard units were broken through by our dynasty’s great army. Seeing his life in critical danger, Yexian Khan actually abandoned his country and fled alone with twenty thousand remnant defeated troops.” Both Qin and Lu clapped and cheered, feeling extremely satisfied.

Liu Angtian continued: “At that time the vanguard general, seeing Yexian Khan isolated, was immediately overjoyed and immediately led his team in pursuit. If they could capture Yexian Khan alive and bring him back, that would be achievement worthy of marking in history. Who knew that at this crucial moment there came an extremely despicable clown to stir up trouble.”

Qin Zhonghai smiled: “The clown stirring up trouble? Does the marquis mean Jiang Chong?”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “That wasn’t Jiang Chong. At that time he was just a military supervisor at Jade Gate Pass – then he had no power or influence, just one of Prince Min’s retainers. To play such tricks was still far beyond him.”

Qin Zhonghai said strangely: “If not Jiang Chong, then who? Could it be Liu Jing?”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “That person, speaking of seniority, was much higher than these people. He was a eunuch the late emperor usually most favored, named Wang Ying.”

Both Qin and Lu shook their heads – neither had heard this person’s name.

Liu Angtian continued: “This Wang Ying, relying on the late emperor’s usual favor, actually spread false imperial edicts at the crucial moment, telling that vanguard general to return to camp immediately, fearing he would steal the first achievement. How could that vanguard general not know Wang Ying’s petty mind – didn’t he just want to benefit his own people? That general was a fierce-tempered person with a very stubborn nature. The more Wang Ying feared he’d steal the achievement, the more urgently he pursued. Wang Ying, seeing the situation was bad, hurriedly sent his adopted son leading troops in pursuit, wanting to catch up to the khan first.”

Qin Zhonghai, having long served in the military and knowing well such achievement-stealing matters, showed great disdain on his face.

Liu Angtian said: “These two groups pushed and shoved each other on the battlefield, neither yielding, both fearing the other would steal the achievement. But Wang Ying’s adopted son was quite incompetent – how could he compete with a battle-hardened veteran? After chasing several li, Wang Ying’s adopted son had already fallen behind. Seeing that general had caught up to Yexian Khan, leading his horse with lowered shoulder and bent waist, about to capture the khan alive and establish unprecedented achievement.

“Just at this moment, Wang Ying’s adopted son, resentful in his heart, actually ordered arrows shot – but toward that vanguard general. His heart was cruel and ruthless, showing no mercy, immediately turning that general and his horse into a pincushion. The khan, seeing the opportunity not to be missed, hurriedly rushed into a small path and escaped without a trace.” Both Qin Zhonghai and Lu Yun cried out “Ah!” simultaneously, feeling Wang Ying’s adopted son was extremely vicious and despicable.

Liu Angtian sighed: “One wave hadn’t settled when another arose. That vanguard general died innocently, and his subordinate soldiers naturally felt hatred and anger. They immediately turned against each other and fiercely attacked Wang Ying’s adopted son. The two groups fought desperately right in front of the enemy formation, killing until heaven and earth were dark and blood flowed like rivers. Yexian Khan, escaping death and seeing our army’s absurd behavior, after laughing bitterly immediately reorganized his troops for counterattack. How could those two groups, in the midst of mutual slaughter, respond to the khan’s assault? They were immediately killed until corpses piled like mountains in great defeat.”

Both Qin and Lu shook their heads repeatedly, with Qin Zhonghai furious and cursing: “Damn it! Eunuch disaster to the country – nothing worse than this!”

Liu Angtian sighed lightly: “Though Wang Ying’s adopted son had poor martial arts, his escape skills were quite accomplished. He abandoned helmet and armor and fled alone, then embellished and distorted the story before the late emperor, completely reversing black and white. The late emperor, not understanding military affairs, was furious upon hearing this. When the remnants of that vanguard general’s troops returned, he actually had them all executed. This alienated hearts and made all generals gnash their teeth, with morale even lower. Yexian Khan, investigating intelligence and knowing our dynasty’s generals were at odds, took the opportunity for great profit. He discovered several generals had always been Wang Ying’s mortal enemies and divided his troops to surround and attack them with full force. Though Wang Ying was close at hand, his mind was deep and he intended to use others as knives to kill, actually turning a blind eye. Several generals’ calls for emergency aid to the emperor were all concealed by him as he burned the emergency documents. For a time the enemy bandits won repeatedly, and several generals suffered encirclement and inexplicably died on the battlefield.” Qin Zhonghai lowered his head cursing, his eyes seeming ready to spout fire.

Liu Angtian continued: “Though our dynasty’s forces numbered six hundred thousand, when subordinate generals fought independently they had only thirty to fifty thousand each, actually becoming a situation of few against many. Wang Ying used others as knives, borrowing Yexian Khan’s hand to eliminate several troublesome enemies while chaotically reporting military intelligence to keep the late emperor in the dark. Later our dynasty’s great army had lost two-thirds – originally six hundred thousand troops, after these deaths and losses, barely two hundred thousand remained, no longer having any advantage. Though Wang Ying was wildly perverse and shameless, he also understood the principle that when lips are gone, teeth feel cold. Seeing the bad situation, he wanted to reconcile with the remaining generals. But by this point all generals deeply detested him and none were willing to follow his commands. Wang Ying was furious but had no solution.

“Yexian, seeing the opportunity not to be missed and taking advantage of our dynasty’s soldiers’ mutual hatred, quickly concentrated his great army to attack Wang Ying’s main force. The generals intentionally stood by with folded arms – not one sent troops to rescue, watching Wang Ying suffer encirclement. Everyone secretly cheered, all wishing Wang Ying would be killed. This Wang Ying had been arrogant all his life but never expected such an ending – truly it could be said that retribution comes full circle, never failing.

“After Yexian achieved victory and executed Wang Ying, only then was there no one around the late emperor to conceal military intelligence. All generals rushed to the commander’s tent at night, kneeling and tearfully exposing Wang Ying’s wrongs. Only then did the late emperor learn the truth. Seeing the situation had deteriorated to this point, never expecting what should have been a certain victory had reached the brink of life and death, in his regret and pain the ruler and ministers embraced and wept together.” Both Qin and Lu sighed, filled with regret.

“Seeing the situation had become so critical, with Yexian Khan constantly provoking, the late emperor also threw caution to the wind. He personally mounted his horse to supervise the army, determined to fight to the death. Outside Hulugu Valley, a great battle ensued with the rulers of both nations each leading two hundred thousand troops in fierce combat. But by this point, though the late emperor wanted to remedy his great mistake, military morale was already in chaos and defeat was already apparent – there was truly no way to turn the tide. Within days, news came of our great army’s disastrous defeat.”

Qin Zhonghai asked in a trembling voice: “In the end, we still lost?”

Liu Angtian sighed: “In the autumn of the fifteenth year of Wuying, when news of the late emperor’s disastrous defeat in his personal expedition spread, Jade Gate Pass bore the brunt. For a time people were in panic, not knowing what to do. At that time the great general defending Jade Gate Pass was Marquis Wude. Though his garrison was only thirty thousand men, Marquis Wude, relying on his superior military strategy and profound martial arts, was not afraid in the slightest. Upon hearing the news, he wanted to open the pass and march out to rescue the late emperor. But at this time Jiang Chong expressed opposition. Using the excuse that they hadn’t received the late emperor’s edict, he actually resisted sending troops. Marquis Wude was furious beyond measure, but since the late emperor had sent this person to supervise the army, if he openly resisted it would be the great crime of treason and rebellion. Seeing Jiang Chong so pedantic and twisted, Marquis Wude was helpless. The remaining generals were also cowardly types who, seeing the great disparity in strength between the two sides, naturally hoped to hide inside the pass and not venture into danger.”

Qin Zhonghai raged: “These dog bastards only know how to wield power and influence but have no real ability! If I had been there, I would have chopped them all down with one blade!”

Liu Angtian’s expression changed greatly as he shouted: “Reckless courage! Don’t mention this matter again!” He gasped for a moment, then turned to face Lu Yun gently: “If you were Marquis Wude and this Jiang Chong refused to open the pass, how would you respond?”

Lu Yun pondered for a moment: “If I were Marquis Wude, I would fabricate messages to make the generals believe the late emperor was safe and sound, just hiding in a secure place waiting for his subjects to rescue him. Seeing the situation still had hope, who wouldn’t want to gain the great merit of rescuing the emperor? They would definitely agree to send troops and follow Marquis Wude to save him. I think though Jiang Chong was perverse, with everyone’s interests at stake, he probably wouldn’t dare offend the crowd’s anger.”

Liu Angtian laughed heartily: “Good lad! No wonder Zhonghai keeps praising you. The strategy Marquis Wude used back then was exactly this!”

He paused and continued: “At that time Marquis Wude fabricated news saying Yexian Khan and our dynasty’s great army were locked in fierce battle, both sides fighting so intensely they couldn’t determine victory or defeat. Only the emperor was hiding alone in a small inn beside Hulugu Valley, not knowing how to return to the pass. The generals were overjoyed upon hearing this – seeing such great merit right before their eyes, they wouldn’t have to risk the slightest danger yet could escort the late emperor back. They immediately advocated opening the pass and sending troops. Thirty thousand soldiers galloped out, fearing they’d be even a moment too late.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed: “These people are truly despicable and boring – they’re really the shame of our dynasty.” Seeing Lu Yun show his brilliance and Liu Angtian’s great admiration, his heart was also quite pleased, not at all bothered by Liu Angtian’s earlier scolding.

Liu Angtian continued: “The generals thought they had an easy opportunity, but they had actually fallen into Marquis Wude’s scheme. At this moment thirty thousand troops ventured deep alone like moths to flame – trying to safely rescue the emperor could be said to be extremely difficult. Yexian Khan at that time was besieging the late emperor’s great army. Seeing this longtime enemy arrive, his heart was filled with wild joy. Relying on his two hundred thousand troops plus having every advantage of timing, terrain, and people, he immediately declared to his subjects: ‘If I cannot capture Marquis Wude alive and make him surrender to our dynasty, then I will consider myself defeated.’ How could Marquis Wude not know the situation was perilous? But he was a regional hero, definitely not easy to deal with. He immediately arranged strange formations and fought Yexian Khan to the death, trying to rescue the emperor.”

Qin Zhonghai, hearing with great interest, quickly asked: “What happened after? Who won and who lost?”

Under the weak candlelight, Liu Angtian’s face showed sorrow. For a long time he said nothing. Both Qin and Lu exchanged glances, both feeling very strange.

Qin Zhonghai asked: “What exactly happened after? Did the late emperor return safely?”

Liu Angtian shook his head sadly: “No, he didn’t return.”

Both Qin and Lu were greatly shocked and said in unison: “Didn’t return? Did the late emperor die in battle?”

Liu Angtian nodded very, very lightly.

Lu Yun exclaimed: “The late emperor passed away? Did he die at Yexian’s hands?”

Liu Angtian shook his head sadly. Qin Zhonghai pondered for a moment: “He couldn’t bear the humiliation and committed suicide for the country?”

Liu Angtian sighed deeply: “He was killed by his own people.”

Both Qin and Lu opened their mouths wide, unable to believe it, saying in horror: “Who was so wildly audacious as to dare kill the emperor?”

Liu Angtian sighed: “It was Marquis Wude – he killed the emperor with one blade.”

Qin Zhonghai mumbled: “How is this possible… he was a loyal minister! Could he have gone mad…”

Liu Angtian sighed: “In the twelfth month of the fifteenth year of Wuying, shocking news came to the capital saying this personal expedition had ended in disastrous defeat, and Marquis Wude, for unknown reasons, had actually killed the late emperor with one blade. When news of the late emperor’s death spread, all court ministers were shocked. For a time crying shook the heavens, and the capital was in panic and chaos.”

Qin Zhonghai and Lu Yun exchanged glances, both showing great fear in their eyes.

Liu Angtian continued: “Not long after the news came, there were more rumors saying Yexian Khan would soon surround the capital and approach the city walls. All ministers were deeply shocked. Seeing the late emperor had already died and the country was like a precarious egg that truly couldn’t be without a ruler for a day, since the late emperor had no children, they decided his imperial brother Prince Min should succeed to the throne – that’s today’s emperor.”

Qin Zhonghai exclaimed: “I never knew of this historical event – how have I never heard of it?”

Liu Angtian sighed: “Who would want to publicize such shameful events?”

Qin Zhonghai nodded, already understanding. Though this personal expedition’s history involved many people, civil and military officials didn’t want to spread the shameful events and had been trying hard to cover it up for years. Both Qin and Lu were hearing of this for the first time and only now got to see the full picture.

Qin Zhonghai asked again: “Did they later find out how the late emperor died? Was it really Marquis Wude who killed him?”

Liu Angtian looked up to the sky and sighed deeply, his eyes moist, shaking his head: “I don’t know… I don’t want to know…”

Qin Zhonghai said strangely: “Marquis, this is very strange! Since this Marquis Wude is suspected of killing the emperor, how can you not investigate clearly?”

Liu Angtian sighed: “What’s there to investigate? The day after the news came, Marquis Wude’s entire household of forty-two people had all been executed. All relatives within three degrees were put to lingchi death, those outside three degrees were beheaded for public display. Even Marquis Wude’s youngest child was not spared.”

Both Qin and Lu cried out in sympathy.

Qin Zhonghai sighed: “He was such a good Grand Commander who should have been loyal and patriotic – how could he suddenly rebel? These rumors are probably not entirely true. Who exactly spread these words?”

Liu Angtian sighed and quietly spoke two words: “Jiang Chong.”

Qin Zhonghai sneered: “That bastard again! Did everyone just let his two lips stir up trouble without anyone coming forward to confront him?”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “The personal expedition that year was magnificently heroic. Over a hundred generals deployed before and after all died for the country. In the entire world, besides Jiang Chong alone, no one survived to return.”

Qin Zhonghai exclaimed: “What? Only Jiang Chong escaped that year?”

Liu Angtian’s expression was grave as he nodded: “Exactly so. Over a hundred fierce generals all died in battle – only Jiang Chong alone escaped.”

Qin Zhonghai pondered: “This doesn’t make sense. Jiang Chong said Marquis Wude rebelled and killed the emperor just to preserve his own safety and family. By this reasoning, Marquis Wude couldn’t have died in battle. Jiang Chong’s words are definitely fraudulent.”

Liu Angtian laughed bitterly: “You’re right. This Marquis Wude didn’t die in the western frontier, but though he lived, he was as good as dead – probably even more tragic than dying on the battlefield.”

Qin Zhonghai raised his eyebrows strangely: “What does this mean?”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “All records and documents about Marquis Wude have been completely sealed by the court. Anyway, he’s no longer in this world now. Just consider that he already died in the Western Regions long ago. Perhaps that would make him happier…”

Qin Zhonghai frowned, unable to understand his implication.

Liu Angtian gazed at the candlelight as if recalling past events, choking up: “Sigh… pitiful that heaven envies talent. That Marquis Wude entered court as an official at twenty-eight, and in just thirteen years encountered such events… If he were still alive today, he’d be about sixty years old…” He shook his head and sighed sadly – clearly his friendship with this person was quite deep.

Seeing his expression, Qin Zhonghai and the others felt it inappropriate to press further and remained silent for a while.

After a long while, Liu Angtian sighed: “Since ancient times, who escapes death? What matters is leaving a loyal heart to illuminate history. What’s called ‘illuminating history’ means leaving fragrance for ten thousand ages. To this day, whether Marquis Wude was loyal or treacherous, no one knows. But good people don’t live long while treacherous ministers can live to a hundred with wealth, rank, and longevity all complete. That Jiang Chong, since escaping with his life, has risen meteorically. He was already Prince Min’s favored minister, and after Prince Min succeeded to the throne, he became even more favored. Within years he already held great military and political power. No one at court could stop him anymore.”

Qin Zhonghai cursed: “That bastard – someday I’ll tear him to pieces.”

Liu Angtian sighed: “After the late emperor’s death, decades passed in a flash. No one at court mentions this matter anymore. The current emperor doesn’t like us military men, so he follows Jiang Chong’s strategy and transfers us all to the frontier – also for peace and quiet.”

Qin Zhonghai sighed lightly: “If not for the marquis’s great achievements in repeatedly defeating the Oirat these past years, you’d probably still be herding sheep and horses in the north!”

Liu Angtian smiled bitterly and continued: “Later Yexian had internal strife – several sons fought among themselves. Without our dynasty deploying a single soldier, they destroyed themselves. By this time, the disaster of that personal expedition was forgotten even more completely, as if this event had never happened. Though all civil and military officials are fickle, there’s still righteousness between heaven and earth. Finally a courageous and capable famous minister emerged to secretly oppose Jiang Chong. This person was surnamed Wang, named Ning, holding the position of Left Imperial Censor, with outstanding integrity and pride.”

Liu Angtian saw Lu Yun’s lips move and asked: “What? Do you know Lord Wang?”

Lu Yun shook his head: “I once heard Dingyuan mention this person’s name. When Dingyuan fled his hometown, he was going to the capital to find Lord Wang.”

Liu Angtian nodded: “What Brother Lu said is correct – Dingyuan came east to the capital to seek this person.”

He paused and continued: “This Lord Wang has always had a rigid temperament. After the personal expedition, seeing that among countless fierce generals only Jiang Chong returned, Lord Wang’s strong character immediately suspected fraud and secretly targeted Jiang Chong. On the surface he dealt with the treacherous party diplomatically, but privately he searched everywhere, single-mindedly investigating the cause and effect of that year’s events.”

Qin Zhonghai praised: “Lord Wang’s lonely minister’s loyal heart is truly admirable.”

Liu Angtian said: “Over more than ten years, Lord Wang constantly sent people to investigate the western frontier, spending enormous effort. But that disaster was too long ago, and it was difficult to find clues immediately. Later Lord Wang could only ask his schoolmate Liang Zhiyi to recommend him as Prefect of Xiliang for convenient nearby investigation. That Lord Liang was truly loyal – abandoning his prestigious Hanlin position to actually go to the distant frontier. This move was indeed brilliant. Before long, Lord Wang and his people made discoveries, finding several suspicious points about that year’s personal expedition.”

Both Qin and Lu quickly said: “We’d like to hear the details.”

Liu Angtian said: “According to Lord Wang’s investigations, after Marquis Wude left the pass that year, he directly led troops to Tianshan. That Jiang Chong also went together.”

Qin Zhonghai said strangely: “Tianshan? This Tianshan is hundreds of li from Jade Gate Pass. What did Marquis Wude and the others go there for? To pick snow lotus from Tianshan?”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “This is exactly what’s strange. How could that Jiang Chong, who later framed Marquis Wude in every way, go to Tianshan with him? Could there be some hidden circumstances? Lord Wang knew this was key and investigated with all his might, but despite years of hard work, he couldn’t find the inside story. Probably only Jiang Chong himself in this world understands.”

Lu Yun said: “Could their going to Tianshan be related to the emperor?”

Liu Angtian said: “That wasn’t it. The late emperor was fighting decisively at Hulugu Valley then. Hulugu Valley is hundreds of li from Tianshan – if they wanted to rescue the emperor, they were going in completely the wrong direction.”

Seeing everyone had stopped talking, Liu Angtian continued: “This is only the first strange thing Lord Wang discovered. The second matter is even more bizarre. According to rumors, when Jiang Chong escaped from the western frontier that year, he didn’t return directly from the battlefield but was escorted back by Yexian Khan.”

Everyone was greatly shocked and asked: “How could this be?”

Liu Angtian said: “This is the suspicious point. I originally thought Lord Wang and the others hated Jiang Chong extremely and were making false statements. Later when I inquired, I learned this information was revealed by guards around Yexian Khan. Only then did I understand Lord Wang’s words were true – that Jiang Chong had indeed been with Yexian Khan for a full three days.”

Qin Zhonghai slapped his thigh hard: “What a treacherous minister – truly a country-selling wretch! This fellow had long colluded with Yexian Khan. He must be the one who killed the late emperor!”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “Not necessarily. According to historical materials Lord Wang and the others found, at that time Jiang Chong had somehow separated from Marquis Wude and was wandering alone on the Western Region battlefield with no troops around him. By bad luck he ran into Yexian’s generals and was captured. Originally Yexian Khan planned to kill him with one blade, just like Wang Ying years before. Logically Jiang Chong had no way to live. Before execution, according to custom, the khan let Jiang Chong state a final wish – whether he wanted wine or meat, everything would be provided. But Jiang Chong wanted nothing else – he only asked the great khan to grant him a private conversation, and he would die without regret. Yexian Khan was a man of his word, so since he’d promised, he agreed.”

Qin Zhonghai sneered: “This little treacherous minister had so many plots and schemes even before death.”

Liu Angtian said: “After the two entered the tent to talk, all the ministers waited outside, thinking they’d come out in a moment. Even the executioners were prepared. But this conversation went on endlessly, dragging until the next morning before they emerged. During their secret talk, when ministers wanted to enter and check, they were driven out by the khan.”

Qin Zhonghai laughed: “That turtle Jiang Chong must have exceptional eloquence and flattery skills, making the khan feel so comfortable that he wouldn’t let others interrupt.”

Liu Angtian said: “According to that guard’s account, he was present during Jiang Chong and the khan’s deep conversation that night. According to his retelling, during their secret talk that night, Jiang Chong presented a piece of sheepskin on the spot. Yexian Khan originally disdained it, but Jiang Chong whispered a long speech in his ear. After hearing it, the khan actually changed color and jumped up, then talked carefully with Jiang Chong. Later he not only spared Jiang Chong from death but treated this person with great courtesy – all because of this sheepskin.”

Qin Zhonghai said strangely: “Truly strange – who’d have thought a small piece of sheepskin could have such power, even serving as a life-saving charm? What the hell is this treasure?”

Lu Yun quietly pondered. That day Wu Dingyuan had entrusted that piece of sheepskin to him. Thinking back now, he had just casually put it on his body without noticing if there was anything special about it.

Liu Angtian said: “As Jiang Chong’s power grew, our dynasty’s ministers who knew the inside story all devoted full effort to finding that sheepskin. According to Lord Wang, that sheepskin was evidence of Jiang Chong’s country-selling. In his view, this sheepskin should have a map drawn on it – the national boundary between our dynasty and Yexian. Back then, to save his own life, Jiang Chong promised Yexian that after returning to the capital, he would bribe people in the Border Administration to re-alter the maps stored in our dynasty’s Ministry of War, moving the national boundary back several hundred li. Yexian, knowing he was close to Prince Min and would surely be highly valued in the future, agreed to his request and released him.”

Qin Zhonghai said: “So this sheepskin is the contract Jiang Chong made with Yexian Khan?”

Liu Angtian nodded: “Everyone says so – it should be.”

Qin Zhonghai was puzzled: “Honestly speaking, the land between our dynasty and Yexian isn’t fertile territory – it’s basically barren desert where birds don’t even lay eggs. I don’t know what Yexian Khan wanted this land for. This explanation is very strange. Besides, the boundaries between two countries are just some stone markers. On a dark and windy night, even moving them hundreds of li east or west, no one would know. If Yexian wanted to occupy land, he could just find a few soldiers to move some stones. Why go to such trouble?”

Liu Angtian said: “What Zhonghai says isn’t unreasonable, but moving stone markers is such a low trick – if you can do it, others naturally can too. Comparatively, if Jiang Chong bribed people in the Border Administration, Yexian Khan could gain thousands of li of territory without using a single soldier. As long as our country’s maps record it thus, there would be no future disputes between the two countries. How could he not make such a profitable deal?”

Qin Zhonghai chuckled and scratched his head, remaining noncommittal.

Liu Angtian continued: “For this reason, court ministers always firmly believed this sheepskin was evidence of Jiang Chong’s country-selling. Among them, Imperial Censor Wang Ning and Prefect Liang Zhiyi believed it most. After Yexian’s destruction, this sheepskin flowed into the marketplace and disappeared. But Lord Liang didn’t give up at all – he spent enormous effort and countless gold and silver treasures and finally dug up the sheepskin. Heaven doesn’t disappoint those with determination – this Jiang Chong, arrogant all his life, finally faced his day of destruction.”

Both Qin and Lu nodded, feeling satisfied in their hearts.

Liu Angtian sighed: “But as soon as Lord Liang dug up the sheepskin, he immediately suffered disaster and mysteriously died suddenly in office. Lord Liang’s son was extremely spirited and determined his father was murdered by Jiang Chong. After fleeing abroad, he devoted himself to avenging his father and entrusted Yanling Escort Agency to protect and transport this sheepskin to the capital, wanting to deliver it to Lord Wang. Unexpectedly, before the item left Xiliang, it caused the death of the entire escort agency and implicated our nephew Dingyuan in losing his office and becoming a fugitive. Finally Dingyuan alone carried the sheepskin as a fugitive, fleeing to the capital. This evidence changed hands for over ten years and finally fell into this old man’s hands.”

Speaking to this point, everyone felt this sheepskin was extremely inauspicious. It seemed anyone connected to it would suffer strange disasters – not only did the western frontier change color and Yexian’s country perish, but even prefects, ministers, and jianghu heroes all lost their lives because of it.

Qin Zhonghai laughed loudly: “What exactly is special about this sheepskin? Why don’t we take it out and look at it so we can also see for ourselves?”

Liu Angtian chuckled: “If Zhonghai wants to see it, what’s difficult about that?” He opened a secret compartment in the bookcase and turned it several times. With light clicking sounds, a hidden door opened. Liu Angtian carefully and cautiously took it out and brought it before Qin and Lu.

Lu Yun’s heart shook as he thought: “Lord Liu is indeed a hero. Once he said he’d use me, he no longer treats me as an outsider. Even letting me know such an important secret – this person has ancient style and is truly worth serving.”

Qin Zhonghai thought: “This marquis is also too trusting. How can such an important secret treasure be kept in this kind of place? If he encountered someone with high martial arts who could split rocks and shatter walls like a daily routine, how could this mere secret compartment stop them?”

Both harboring their own thoughts, they came forward together to look.

Liu Angtian’s expression was grave as he spread the sheepskin on the table. The sheepskin showed a map of the western frontier with colorful markings and dense foreign characters written all over it.

Qin Zhonghai laughed: “After all this talk, I thought it was some miraculous treasure, but it turns out to be a book of heavenly scripture. These characters are crooked and twisted – who could recognize them?”

Liu Angtian shook his head: “There’s nothing to fear about that. Look at this red line.” He pointed to the red line on the map. The red line started from Tianshan and went all the way to Jade Gate Pass, quite winding and circuitous.

Liu Angtian said: “This red line is the national boundary Jiang Chong agreed on with Yexian. This boundary differs greatly from what the court drew – a full several hundred li difference. If not for Yexian’s destruction, we would have inexplicably lost thousands of li of territory, and several strategic mountain passes would have fallen into enemy hands.”

Both Qin and Lu nodded in understanding.

Liu Angtian continued: “Though Yexian has been destroyed and the boundaries between the two countries abolished, as long as we can translate the characters above and point out evidence of Jiang Chong’s unauthorized boundary changes, His Majesty will surely convict him.”

Lu Yun knew the court’s Taichang Temple had translators and immediately asked: “Has the marquis found someone to translate it now?”

Liu Angtian’s expression was grave: “The characters above are written in Yexian’s script. Now that Yexian has perished, no one in Taichang Temple can recognize them.”

Lu Yun sighed: “If no one can recognize the characters above, wouldn’t this sheepskin lose its function?”

Liu Angtian smiled slightly: “This matter needn’t worry us. Though Yexian’s destruction has lasted ten years, some of his former subjects still live in the Xiliang area. As long as we can find them, we can certainly translate the characters above.”

Qin Zhonghai took the candle and smiled: “That won’t be necessary to trouble ourselves – perhaps this sheepskin has some peculiarity and needs fire to reveal its secrets.”

Liu Angtian scolded: “This thing was so hard to obtain. The future elimination of treacherous ministers and restoration of court discipline all depends on it. How can Zhonghai make such jokes?”

Qin Zhonghai smiled slightly: “To eliminate treachery and evil, what matters is real strength and fists. I’ve never heard of a piece of sheepskin toppling a great tree. Marquis, I think we shouldn’t waste our thoughts – let’s talk more about military affairs!”

Liu Angtian snorted: “What I called you here for was originally military affairs. I’ve already instructed Suguan and Dingyuan to take this sheepskin to Xiliang soon to investigate the details. Dingyuan is familiar with Xiliang territory and can be useful. As for you, Zhonghai, this old man also has an important task for you.”

Qin Zhonghai immediately stood up, bowed and cupped his hands: “This humble general awaits orders!”

Liu Angtian said: “Ten days from now, you’ll lead five thousand troops to escort Lord He on his mission to the Timur Khanate. The princess is a precious golden body – if she suffers even the slightest harm, I’ll hold you responsible.”

Qin Zhonghai knelt on one knee and declared loudly: “Zhonghai will risk life and death, vowing to protect the princess’s complete safety throughout the journey and ensure Lord He’s complete success, absolutely not failing your trust!”

Liu Angtian smiled and stroked his beard: “On this western journey, you might as well take this Master Lu to let him gain experience.”

Qin Zhonghai was overjoyed and both kowtowed in thanks. Lu Yun saw that Liu Angtian valued him considerably. The two swept away their past unpleasantness, and Lu Yun was even more grateful for Qin Zhonghai’s support.

Just as Qin Zhonghai was about to take his leave, Liu Angtian pulled him back and whispered instructions: “This time Suguan and you are handling separate tasks, but you must coordinate and keep in contact. If anything happens on his side, just lead your troops into the pass and act as you see fit.”

Qin Zhonghai nodded, finally understanding Liu Angtian’s intention in deploying him to the Western Regions. He was still worried about Yang Suguan’s group and sent him to lead troops for nearby support. He laughed heartily: “Marquis, don’t worry! I’ll give it my all.”

Liu Angtian patted his shoulder in encouragement.

Two days later, Liu Angtian held a grand banquet to send off the generals. He looked around at Yang Suguan and Qin Zhonghai seated on his left and right, Wu Dingyuan and Lu Yun seated below, Wei Zizhuang standing behind as guard. The other great generals who couldn’t attend were defending various frontiers. The Liu faction could truly be called rich in talent, accomplished in both civil and military arts. Liu Angtian was in high spirits, constantly urging wine and adding to the festivities.

After the banquet, Liu Angtian carefully instructed Yang Suguan, handing him the sheepskin: “This item has far-reaching implications – you must be careful and attentive. When you reach Xiliang, Dingyuan knows the territory. You two should investigate carefully, find people to translate the characters on the sheepskin, and see whether Jiang Chong really unauthorized altered boundaries and committed such treacherous acts. As for that Liangzhou Prefect Lu Qingzheng, since he’s Jiang Chong’s henchman, look into any illegal activities he might have. If the evidence is solid, this old man will deal with him later.”

Yang Suguan nodded in agreement and said: “When we go to Xiliang to investigate, Jiang Chong will surely send many skilled fighters to obstruct us. I fear violence will be unavoidable. Your subordinate wants to first return to Shaolin Temple on Mount Song to seek the abbot’s help. What does your excellency think?”

Liu Angtian had seen the divine monks Ling Ding and Ling Zhen and knew the abilities of Shaolin’s high monks. He said joyfully: “Excellent. To prevent accidents on the road, I’ll ask Guard Wei to accompany your group.”

That day Yang Suguan left the capital with Wu Dingyuan and Wei Zizhuang.

Several more days passed before Qin Zhonghai led Lu Yun in mobilizing five thousand troops to escort Princess Yinchuan west for the marriage alliance. The great army transported dozens of carts of gold, silver, and treasures – all prepared as gifts for the Timur Khan. The group left the capital in a mighty procession.

The two groups agreed that after completing the marriage alliance, they would meet in Xiliang City on the fifteenth day of the first month, then return to the capital together.
